MARCH/APRIL 2024 EDITOR'S NOTE
EDITOR'S
NOTE
In a world of fast paced changes and growth, it feels absolutely necessary to keep up with all the advances.
From Smarthomes, as can be read about under the Tech section, to sustainable electric cars which you may
read under Wheels, it surely seems to be the way forward.
That said, as Malaysians celebrate the festive season of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, I personally feel it is imperative that
we find a way to keep tradition alive and well while maintaining close relationships with family and friends.
Our cover story portrays as such the importance of staying close to family and keeping culture alive no
matter the changes around if only to stay true to what means most to each of us individually.
Enjoy lovely festive delicacies at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort during the Ramadhan month or visit any of
the charming restaurants that feature a wide variety of local fare as shown under Savour.
Upon indulging, do check out the Health and Wellness page as Pilates is definitely a trending form of exercise.
From stretching and mobility to holding tense positions and working up a sweat, one will find that bodies
transform with consistency.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Muslim readers a blessed Ramadhan and a wonderful
Hari Raya while wishing our other esteemed readers a relaxing and fulfilling break.

CULINARY EXPERIENCE
Cooking with Style
Welcome to the world of "Cooking with Style," at Twenty7 Restaurant in Tropicana Golf & Country
Resort, where the art of preparing food goes beyond the basic necessities. It's about infusing passion,
creativity, and a touch of elegance into every dish. Here, the kitchen is not just a place to cook; it's
a canvas for culinary expression where every recipe is an opportunity to unleash creativity. From
ingredient selection to plating techniques, each step is a chance to elevate the dining experience.
From top left: Plating up a plate

a good, clean serve; The delicate
task of ensuring that each serving
is of equal amounts before serving
Proper portioning is essential to ensure that each diner receives a fair and uniformed amount
when served. Consistent portion control is important in maintaining quality and meeting customer
expectations. Serving is also about timing. The food should be served at the right temperature and
ideally brought to the table promptly after preparation to ensure optimal taste and texture.
Plating or food presentation, is indeed an essential aspect of the culinary arts and part of the practise
at Twenty7 Restaurant. The visual appeal of a dish is a crucial element in creating a memorable
dining experience.
The way a dish looks is the first thing diners notice. A well-presented plate can create a positive first
impression, making the dining experience more enjoyable. Food decoration allows chefs to showcase
their creativity and skills. It's a form of artistic expression that goes beyond the taste of the food and
definitely part of the experience at Twenty 7 Restaurant at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort.

Mention cherry blossom season and immediately one will think of Japan but, did you
know there are other countries who have this sweet and delicate flower in full bloom
too? Here are 5 countries to visit for cherry blossom season.

Parc de Sceaux, France
About nine and half kilometres south of Paris are
two seperate cherry tree orchards. One, with all pink
blossomed trees and the other with 150 all white

flowers to be in full bloom so a day trip there is a must.

Longwangtang Cherry Blossom Park, China
Located in the small port city of Dalian, the blossoms here bloom
usually around late April. With the oldest of China’s cherry blossom
trees dating back to the WWII era, these delicate wonders were
planted during the Japanese occupation of China between 1937 to
1945. The area isn’t much to look at but come blooming season and
the dam is lined with beautiful pink and white blooms.
Jerte Valley, Spain
Spain’s Jerte Valley is covered in some two million all white cherry
blossom trees. While in full bloom, the hilly area looks like it has been
covered in a thick blanket of snow making for a wondrous sight outside
of the city. A sort of magic fills the air in this faux-winter wonderland so
do check it out around the middle of March.

Take a stroll with family and friends in early April through
Amsterdamse Bos park when it hosts its’ annual cherry blossom
festival. Four hundred cherry blossom trees were gifted by the
Japan’s Women Club in the year 2000 to celebrate each year of ties
between the two countries. Their dedicated section of the park is
found in Kersenbloesempark and it is the only cherry blossom park
where the trees were individually named. Two hundred have female
Japanese names while the other two hundred trees were given
female Dutch names.
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, New York
The Brookly Botanic Garden throws an annual cherry blossom festival
called Sakura Matsuri usually during the last weekend of April. If it is
impossible to make it during that time, fret not as the Botanic Garden
is home to 42 species of cherry blossoms and each take turns to
bloom between late-March to mid-May. And even if that time frame
does not work out, the Botanic Gardens is a must-see no matter the
time of year except for winter. It is also wildly famous for their vibrant
tulips in Spring.

Chhun On Golf Resort, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Recently debuted in January is the first of two 18-
hole layouts from architect Brian Curley. Located at
this growing golf facility near the center of the capital
city of Cambodia, Curley says the East course will
adopt a more classic design, with formal bunkering,
while the West course, set to open in 2025, will have
a more natural and craggy appearance. Nestled within
a floodplain, the property underwent excavation
to create five lakes, providing the essential fill dirt
required to elevate the terrain for the golf courses. The
inaugural course will feature a distinctive par-three
island green 19th hole, accessible solely by boat.

Erbil Hill, Kurdistan, Iraq
Niece of renowned architect Pete Dye – Cynthia
Dye, has taken on the role of designing Iraq's only
golf course. The first nine holes are set to make their
debut in late spring or early summer, with the full 18
holes expected to be open for play by the end of the
year. This real-estate-oriented project encompasses
not only the golf course but also includes a hotel
and various shops. With the completion of Erbil Hills,
Iraq will join the ranks of golf-playing nations as the
208th out of 249 countries and territories worldwide.
Notably, Iraq had a few golf courses, featuring both
sand and grass, in the past, but they were forced to
close during the Gulf War.
The Legacy Club at Diamante, Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico
Tiger Woods's latest venture at Diamante, home to the
PGA Tour event hosted on his El Cardonal course, is The
Legacy Club. This exclusive retreat, available only to
invited members, is set to open in the fall of 2024. The
upcoming course is strategically positioned in a bowllike
terrain, offering natural protection from the winds
prevalent on the Baja Peninsula. It promises to transport
golfers from the arid desert landscape to a verdant oasis
adorned with lush vegetation and panoramic views of
the nearby Pacific Ocean.
Stone Highland Golf & Resort, Hanoi, Vietnam
Vietnam stands out globally as the epicenter of golf development
outside the United States, with numerous course projects either in
the planning stages or actively under construction. Nestled on a
mountainous expanse just north of Hanoi, the Stone Highland Golf
& Resort is a sprawling 36-hole undertaking. The first 18 holes were
inaugurated at the close of 2023, and the project is set to reveal an
additional nine holes in late 2024. Both courses, crafted by Brian
Curley, are situated on a breathtaking landscape elevated above flat
rice fields, featuring steep mountain slopes and rocky terrains. While
the upcoming second course exhibits a slightly less rugged topography
than its predecessor, it still offers captivating elevated views of the

Here is a list of Malaysian
designers who have
made it big globally
More than dressing up the Malaysian who’s who, local fashion designers have a collection of
remarkable creations and avant-garde talents that truly have put our country on the map. From
ready-to-wear to haute couture, dazzling gowns to traditional garments, here are some of our
favourites creating waves on the international realm.
Rizman Ruzaini
Rizman Ruzaini showcased what 18 years of experience in creating breathtaking fashion looks like
when they presented their Spring Summer 2024 collection on the last day of Dubai Fashion Week
in October last year. Consisting of 60 delicately designed and intricately made demi-couture
pieces, the collection was donned by beautiful models from around the world, including Malaysia’s
own favourites - Tinie and Deedee Nash. The show climaxed as world renowned supermodel
Naomi Campbell took to the runway with her signature walk, wearing an intricately exquisite
handmade gown featuring thousands of gemstones, much to the amazement of the audience. As
the designers Rizman Nordin and Ruzaini Jamil took their bow, hand-in-hand with Ms. Campbell,
the show venue in the Dubai Design District ruptured into a roaring applause closing a week of
celebrating fashion and creativity.

sophisticated women on the go. The vision for the outifts
created was so that it can fit effortlessly into your suitcase
only to be unpacked without a crease and is easily hung up
to be worn later. Taking inspiration from her own sense of
style that is chic and stylish, any creation from this label
could be worn for parties and even big events such as
weddings and galas. Another outstanding feature of this
brand is that each design created is named after a famous
person. So one may request to wear the Anna Kournikova,
Kimora Lee Simmons, Maria Sharapova, Paris Hilton and
Rashida Jones, all of whom, have been spotted wearing
Farah Khan dresses to major events.
Khoon Hooi
Fashion designer Khoon Hooi, who hails from Perak,
launched his own label in 1999, 6 years after graduating
from the Malaysian Institute of Art. In those 6 years, he
spent his time honing his fashion skills in competitions
where he eventually cinched his first award as runner-up
for the Malaysian Young Designer Award in 1996. From
then to now, Khoon Hooi’s talents and reach has grown
further and further. A-lister chart-topping American
singer Katy Perry adorned a gorgeous soft yellow creation
during a Jingle Ball concert in Minnesota. The singer was
particularly drawn to the embellished gown from its Spring
2020 collection as it featured a giant bow. Hollywood
actresses Karen Pittman and Ginnifer Goodwin were also

TIMELESS
ELEGANCE
Rachel Wong inspires tradition
with a contemporary vision with
Monica Quen
In the heart of Malaysia's bustling fashion scene, Monica Quen stands as a testament
to the enduring charm of oriental fashion. Established in 2000 by the visionary Monica
Ong herself, the brand has evolved into a beacon of timeless elegance, seamlessly
blending traditional cheongsam aesthetics with modern comfort. Now, under the
guidance of Managing Director and her own daughter - Rachel Wong, Monica Quen
continues to redefine oriental fashion for the 21st century.
The roots of Monica Quen trace back to the creative vision of Monica Ong, a distinguished
alumna of the renowned Saint Martin's School of Arts in the UK. Her journey began in
the late '70s, designing for local boutiques before transitioning into the cut, make, and
tailor (CMT) industry, creating exquisite pieces for elite departmental stores. Ong's
inspiration stemmed from her belief that incorporating oriental styles into our modern
lives could be both aesthetically pleasing and culturally enriching.
Under Wong’s leadership, she shares that initially, she felt her path was with animals.
With a degree to be a veterinary technician and a detour into game development,
Rachel brings a fresh perspective to Monica Quen. As the Managing Director, she
infuses her passion for tradition with modern sensibilities, echoing Monica's original
vision. Wong's transition into the fashion industry was a natural progression and she
had always held an interest upon watching her mother since her childhood.
Monica Quen's mission is clear: to bring the charm and elegance of oriental fashion
into the modern world. The brand envisions a future where the beauty of cheongsams
transcend cultural boundaries. Their focus lies in fabric quality, comfort, practicality,
and continually modernizing designs to meet the dynamic needs of the market.
The designing process at Monica Quen is a year-round endeavor, with special
attention given to Chinese New Year designs. Custom-made clothing, including bridal
cheongsams the everyday qipao, showcase the brand's commitment to personalized
elegance. Wong did divulge that stretch cotton cheongsams in the rare loose fitting
silhouette, are also part of the collection making it an easy option for daily wear.

With departmental counters in Parkson Pavilion KL and

itself to cater to a diverse and discerning clientele.
The dynamic between Ong and Wong is symbiotic.
While Wong oversees day-to-day operations, leasing,

materials.
Monica Quen has garnered a loyal following beyond

Tropicana Golf & Country Resort
cultivates sustainable living through its’
organic farm-to-table revolution
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
103
In the heart of Tropicana Golf & Country Resort (Tropicana), a green oasis was born in June
2019 - an organic farm with a mission. Initiated by the visionary owners and management of
Tropicana, this farm doesn't just grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs; it nurtures a commitment
to renewable environmental consciousness.
Tropicana organic farm boasts an impressive variety of produce, showcasing the richness of
Mother Nature's palette. From dragon fruit, papaya, and banana to choy sum, kangkung, and
an array of herbs like lemongrass and coriander, the farm embraces a diverse and vibrant
collection. It's not just about sustenance; it's about cultivating a connection with the land.
104
MARCH/APRIL 2024 NATURE
The farm-to-table initiative is more than a culinary trend; it's
a commitment to sustainability and a healthier lifestyle. By
using natural waste from the environment to create pesticidefree
crops, Tropicana ensures that the food on your plate is
not just delicious but also safe from harmful chemicals. The
significance of locally sourced ingredients cannot be overstated,
guaranteeing freshness and contributing to the overall wellbeing
of the community.
The farm-to-table process is meticulous. Ingredients are ordered
through the procurement department, and sourcing depends on
the availability of the daily harvest. From the farm, the produce is
freshly picked and swiftly transported to the kitchen. This ensures
that every dish served embodies the essence of freshness.
One standout initiative is the innovative recycling of farm
waste into compost, serving as organic fertilizer. This ingenious
practice not only promotes sustainability but also tackles the
issue of food waste head-on. By nurturing the soil with natural
compost, Tropicana closes the loop in its commitment to
environmental stewardship.
Not keeping this organic bounty to itself; this effort extends
its reach to the local community. Excess produce is made
available to club members and Tropicana Resort residents on
a weekly basis, all at reasonable market prices. This community
partnership not only supports local living but also encourages
a shared commitment to sustainable practices.
In every sprout, every leaf, and every fruit, Tropicana's organic
farm is sowing the seeds of a greener, healthier future. It's not
just a farm; it's a living testament to the power of conscious
living, where the journey from seed to plate embodies the ethos
of sustainability and a harmonious coexistence with nature.

If you wish to pace yourself a little, start light with the Ikan Siakap Kukus
Cili Limau which is a zesty steamed fish soaked in a lime, lemongrass and
garlic sauce and garnished with cherry tomatoes and Thai birds eye chili.
Also try the Ayam Bakar Danok which is chicken marinated in onions,
coriander, Thai birds eye chili and garlic. Light but the flavours definitely
pack a punch.
Lets not forget our greens and a truly Malaysian mastery of a dish, try the
boiled okra topped with a dried prawn chili. Oh-so-simple, the crunchy
greens with the fragrant spice atop is divine and a true pleasure for any
palate. Staples such as Nasi Lemak Pandan and Japanese Noodle Miso Soup
can be expected on the menu too.
Make sure to not skimp and to end the night on a sweet note. Local traditional
Malay kuih will be served and these goodies are typically coconut milk based
making it rich and creamy. There is also Tapai Pulut which is glutinous rice that
is traditionally fermented in rubber tree leaves.

While a traditional Johor dish, what makes laksa in Johor
different is the use of spaghetti noodles as it is told that
Sultan Abu Bakar instructed his royal chefs to use pasta
instead of the traditional rice noodles. That said, laksa is
all about the broth and laksa Johor is unique because it is
served with a thick gravy that is made from ground chili,
spices, coconut milk and fish.
Asam pedas is what your mouth will be watering for when
headed back to Melaka. A balanced combination of sour
and spicy notes, this signature dish is a favourite among
the Peranakan community. The broth is made with tamarind
juice and a range of spices with fresh water fish as the main
ingredient that is usually simmered with a variety of greens
such as okra, aubergine and long beans.

The only known rival to the ever
popular nasi lemak is Terengganu’s
nasi dagang. Frequently selling out
by 10am, the nasi dagang, which
translates to “trader’s rice”, is an
addictive combination of fragrant rice
and sticky rice and is typically served
with gulai ikan tongkol, an aromatic
fish curry with a rich texture and acar
timun, a pickled cucumber, carrot and
onion salad.
Those who hail from Kelantan have a
lighter variety of a rice meal with nasi
kerabu. The word “kerabu” means
salad which is an apt name for this
dish as it is usually served with an
assortment of fresh herbs and raw
vegetables. Topped over blue-coloured
rice, a result from cooking with
butterfly pea flowers, the meal is tied
together with coconut, fish relish and
sambal.
