EDITOR'S NOTE

National Pride is abound this month in our Merdeka

home, we have Her Royal Highness Tengku Datin

Paduka Setia Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris

Ever the graceful Malaysian Royal, Tengku Zatashah

shares with us her many charitable initiatives and

campaigns as well as how she further bridges the

cultural gap between Malaysia and France with her

efforts within the Alliance Francaise.

She also discusses the importance of

#ZeroFoodWastage as well as #SayNo2Plastic

and how she combats both of these concerns

with frequent endeavours to raise awareness

while getting involved on grass-root level

ensuring consistency and successful action.

Further fueling that nationalistic pride is our

very own who have represented Malaysia in various

sporting events and challenges. From triathlete’s

Speaking of Mount Kinabalu, do check out our

Travel page as it is all about Kundasang, Sabah.

Deemed the New Zealand of Malaysia, we share

some of the must sees and must dos during your

holiday to this picturesque town.

Continuing within the spine of the Merdeka

Issue, do read up about our most favourite

national food – Nasi Lemak. We discuss the

origins of this famous fragrant breakfast food

and how it has evolved over the years. We also

feature a list of some of the most popular places

to find a good plate of this sweet and spicy

Malaysian favourite.

Our fashion spread under Trend will have you

feeling cool in our hot and humid weather

especially if you wish to celebrate with a family

getaway to the beach or have friends over for a

barbecue. Don’t forget to adorn yourselves with

not to be missed.

Here’s wishing you a joyous Merdeka Day. We

would like to extend our warmest wishes as

we celebrate the spirit of freedom and unity.

Have a day filled with happiness and pride

Here is a list of some of

the oldest golf courses

around the world

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

57

The oldest golf courses in the world have a lot in common. These courses have seen the game

evolve, offering not just golf but also a peek into its past. With only Scottish golf clubs mentioned

in the list, it's obvious why Scotland is referred to as "The Home of Golf". Delightfully, most of these

courses are public courses where anyone could go online and reserve a tee time.

Est 1832: North Berwick West Links

Officially founded in 1832, North Berwick West Links was built as a six-hole course, since that's

all the available land could accommodate. In 1868 it was expanded to nine holes with the Redan

becoming the West Links most famous hole. 18 holes and open to the public.

Est 1812: Kinghorn Golf Course

Golf was played at Kinghorn starting in 1812, and in

fascinating letter from John Hutton to Alexander Orrock

states that Golf is not how you play but more about the

company one wishes to spend the afternoon with. 18

holes and is open to the public.

Est 1817: Scotscraig Golf Course

Scotscraig Golf Course was founded in 1817 when

members of the group that later became the R&A (Royal

& Ancient) needed a place to play more golf. Two of the

game's legendary course designers, Old Tom Morris and

James Braid, guided the design of the championship

course. 18 holes and is open to the public.

Est 1822: Ratho Farm Golf Links

Proud to be the world's oldest golf course outside of Scotland,

Ratho Farm Golf Links in Bothwell, Tasmania, Australia,

was established in 1822. Alexander Reid emmigrated from

Scotland to Bothwell, Australia with his family, and laid out

the Australia's first golf course. Though it has undergone

renovations and modernizations through its nearly twocentury

history, some of the original, square greens remain.

Following Scottish tradition, Ratho Farms is not only a

completley public course, but you can play it for about $50 a

round. 18 holes and is open to the public.

Est 1793: Kingsbarns Golf Links

Kingsbarns Golf Links has an interesting history. The course

was built in 1793 and golf was enjoyed for decades at spring

and autumn meetings. However, in 1850, the land was plowed

and repurposed as farm land. In 1922 the golf club was reestablished

and a new nine-hole course was laid out.

That course lasted until World War II, when the land was

mined, the reverted back to pasture. The existing course was

built at the turn of the 21st century, when it became the first

course built on Scotish links land in 70 years. That makes

it one of the newest, and oldest golf courses in the world.

Hopefully this time it's here to stay. 18 holes and it open to

the public.

Est 1793: Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club

With official roots dating to 1793, Fortrose and Rosemarkie

Golf Club is among the oldest in the world, and as with several

other courses on this list, there's evidence of golf taking place

Ratho Farm Golf Links

on the grounds long before the official beginning. At Fortrose

and Rosemarkie Golf Club, golf was likely played as early as

1702. 18 holes and open to the public.

Est 1672: Musselburgh Links

If you're looking for proof that the slice is as old as golf itself,

Musselburgh Links has it. While the course officially opened in

1672, it's documented that Mary, Queen of Scots played golf

on the grounds back in 1567. Golfers would often slice their

ball onto the road to the right of the course. From there, an

all-wood club wasn't enough, and in 1885 the brass plate to

reinforce the club was invented, bringing golf the "brassie." 9

holes and open to the public.

Read about the Inspirational journey

of Tengku Zatashah as she balances

royalty, philanthropy, and advocacy

Tengku Zatashah binti Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, a proud member of the

Selangor royal family, is the second daughter of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah,

the ninth Sultan of Selangor. As a Malaysian princess, Tengku Zatashah beautifully

blends her royal heritage with a passion for social causes, creating a modern legacy

that goes far beyond traditional royal duties.

A DIVERSE CAREER PATH

Tengku Zatashah's professional journey has been a colourful one having gone from

advertising to journalism and then from an entrepreneur to a social activist. Not

only were her jobs varied in industries, it took her around the globe from Barcelona,

Paris and London to back home in KL.

One may naturally assume that due to her royal status, Tengku Zatashah would have

had easy access to employment in these various countries but she revealed that

after working as the International Corporate Communications Manager at L'Oréal

Paris for 5 years, they only learnt that she was a Malaysian princess when she got

married to her husband, Aubry Rahim Mennesson and that she always strived to

achieve her success through her own merit.

CHAMPIONING #ZEROFOODWASTAGE

A profound concern for the environment and the

underprivileged led Tengku Zatashah to volunteer

with Kechara Soup Kitchen. Inspired by an article

revealing that Malaysians wasted 230,000 tonnes

of food during Ramadan in 2016, she initiated the

#ZeroFoodWastage campaign. This initiative, which

started with hotel partnerships, has grown to include

top hotels in the Klang Valley and Penang, rescuing

surplus food benefitting 21,000 individuals each night

during Ramadan. There was one month where the

campaign achieved saving approximately 11 tonnes of

surplus food.

Her efforts extended to supermarkets, drawing

inspiration from similar practices in France. Tesco

(now Lotuss) immediately jumped on this opportunity

to work together with Tengku Zatashah and Kechara

Soup Kitchen while, after two years of negotiations,

she also secured a partnership with Aeon, making

Malaysia the first country to receive surplus food from

Aeon's supermarkets.

participating in initiatives like the white flag campaign

during the Covid-19 lockdown, flood relief efforts as

well as distributing food to the orang asli communities,

rubber tappers and fishermen.

Her dedication to environmental sustainability is

evident through her #SayNo2Plastic campaign also

launched in 2016. This campaign has raised awareness

about plastic pollution, particularly single-use plastics,

and has led to significant behavioural changes among

Malaysians.

LEADING MALAYSIA'S GREEN INITIATIVES

At the Change Now Summit in 2020, Tengku Zatashah

had the distinct honour of representing Malaysia,

delivering two impactful talks on her initiatives

#ZeroFoodWastage and #SayNo2Plastic. This global

forum allowed her to connect with inspiring individuals,

such as Tom Szaky, CEO and co-founder of Terracycle,

and Boyan Slat, founder of Ocean Cleanup. Their

discussions centered around the innovative interceptor

technology designed to address river pollution, a topic

that is close to Tengku Zatashah’s heart.

EXPANDING HER IMPACT

Tengku Zatashah's commitment to social causes

is unwavering. She became a founding member of

Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia aiming to rescue and

distribute excess food nationwide. She regularly

collaborates with government agencies and NGOs,

Tengku Zatashah shared that in supporting the

ocean cleanup mission, Malaysia proudly hosts two

interceptors in the Klang River—unique, as no other

location globally has more than one. These interceptors,

manufactured locally in Klang by Malaysians, aim to

clean the world's dirtiest rivers, preventing pollution

from reaching the open sea. The dire state of the Klang River

necessitated this dual deployment and now, 2 years later, the

state of the pollution has significantly improved.

One of these interceptors, a prototype named Neon Moon

1, is fully sponsored by British band Coldplay, with their

involvement and concern announced at their concert here

in Malaysia revealed Tengku Zatashah. She added that the

Ocean Cleanup's regional office now operates out of Kuala

Lumpur, coordinating efforts across the region. Interceptors

deployed to various locations like LA, Vietnam, Bangkok, and

the Dominican Republic were all crafted in Selangor.

Boyan Slat's visit to witness the deployment of the second

interceptor underscored the global significance of our local

efforts. This collaboration and innovation reflect Malaysia's

leading role in the fight against river and ocean pollution,

showcasing our commitment to sustainable solutions on the

world stage.

A ROYAL PATRON WITH A HEART

Tengku Zatashah has been the royal patron of Make-A-Wish

Malaysia since 2015. Notable initiatives include a princess

themed celebration, where renowned local designers - Innai

Red, Fiziwoo, Celeste Thoi, Alia Bastamam, Khoon Hooi and

Melinda Looi created princess inspired dresses to be auctioned

for charity. She also collaborated with CH Carolina Herrera in

2018 for a "Shop with a Cause" campaign, donating proceeds

to Make-A-Wish Malaysia.

More recently, Tengku Zatashah and Make-A-Wish Malaysia

granted a milestone 1000th wish. Visible on her Instagram

account, the wish was for a little girl who wanted to be a

princess mermaid. Held at Sunway Lagoon, the little girl was

accessorised to look like a mermaid and was celebrated for

her bravery and it was made all the more special as her wish

was granted on World Children’s Day.

Known affectionately as "the girl with the tiffin," Tengku

Zatashah champions sustainable practices by using reusable

containers at local markets. Her efforts to reduce plastic

waste and promote sustainability have garnered widespread

recognition and inspired many.

EMBRACING AUTHENTICITY AND TRADITION

As the President of Alliance Française Kuala Lumpur, she

promotes French language and culture, organizing events like

the Le French Festival. Now in its 22nd year, the festival is

set to captivate audiences once again with a rich tapestry of

French movies, gastronomy, and dance. This year's festival is

especially exciting as Tengku Zatashah embraces the theme

of sports, in honour of the upcoming Paris Olympics.

A notable highlight of this year's event is the celebration

of "Breaking," making its debut as an Olympic sport. This

inclusion not only showcases the diversity and inclusivity of

the festival but also brings to the fore some exceptional talent.

Among the performers is young talent Kai Xing Princess, a

remarkable 10-year-old b-girl, who, along with other b-boys

and b-girls, will demonstrate their incredible skills. The festival

also features French DJ T Sia, a celebrated dancer and DJ. As

the official DJ for the Olympics, she will bring her expertise to

Malaysia, offering a masterclass and DJing the Breaking Dance

challenge on June 30th at the Alliance Française.

Balancing a myriad of responsibilities and causes requires

meticulous time management and prioritisation. For Tengku

Zatashah, it’s not just about overseeing initiatives from afar—

being on the ground, engaging at the grassroots level, and

directly interacting with people are essential aspects of her

approach. She takes a hands-on role in all her activities,

personally managing her schedule without the aid of a

personal assistant, a fact well-known to many.

Incorporating traditional values and customs into a

modern lifestyle comes naturally to Tengku Zatashah.

She places great importance on upholding cultural

heritage, often wearing a kebaya even at international

events. For her, showcasing local heritage is crucial,

demonstrating the beauty and significance of tradition

in a contemporary world. This blend of modernity and

tradition reflects her commitment to both her cultural

roots and her progressive vision for the future.

These interactions highlight the positive impact she

has on her community, and she expresses heartfelt

gratitude to her followers for their engagement and

support.

Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes the importance

of living life to the fullest, being surrounded by loved

ones, and giving back to the community. Her motto, "live,

laugh, love," encapsulates her approach to life.

SPREADING POSITIVE VIBES

Tengku Zatashah has found a meaningful way to

connect with her followers through Instagram, sharing

her initiatives and inspiring others to take action. Unlike

many, she has chosen not to be active on X, focusing

instead on a platform that allows for more visual and

personal interaction.

For Tengku Zatashah, social media is about more

than just showcasing her life—it's about genuine

communication. She enjoys engaging with her

followers, fostering a sense of community. The real

reward comes from hearing how her actions have

inspired others. Messages like “I started cutting down

single-use plastic because of you,” “I bring a tiffin and

tumbler because you did,” “I joined the soup kitchen

because of you,” or “I started following the C-drama

recommendations that you shared” bring her immense

joy and fulfillment.

LOOKING AHEAD

Tengku Zatashah aspires to continue her philanthropic

work and make a difference in the lives of others.

Whether through her #ZeroFoodWastage and

#SayNo2Plastic campaigns, her support for Make-

A-Wish Malaysia, or her advocacy for sustainable

development, she remains committed to spreading

love and positivity.

Her life is a testament to the power of authenticity,

return to racing in the Ironman 70.3 Vietnam on May 12, 2024, after a

severe accident a year prior.

On May 4, 2023, Janice collided with a car while training, resulting in

three fractured ribs and a broken clavicle. Despite a predicted year-long

recovery, she pushed through immense physical and mental trauma,

gradually regaining her strength. The Vietnam triathlon marked her

comeback, where she finished in 5 hours and 48 minutes, embodying

the triathlete slogan, “If you never tri, you’ll never know.”

Hailing from Perak, Janice began her triathlon journey in 2018, evolving

from a runner to a full-fledged triathlete. Her longest bike run was

an impressive 600 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur to Terengganu.

Her brother, a fellow athlete, inspired her competitive spirit. Despite

starting late, she quickly rose through the ranks, often placing in the

top 10 in her age group. Her ultimate goal is to achieve All World

Janice trains seven days a week, following a structured program that

increases to 14 - 15 hours per week during race season. Her regimen

includes morning swims, followed by work, and evening cycling

or running sessions. An online coach provides accountability and

structure. Diet is also crucial, with carb-loading periods to boost

Her fellow triathletes are her biggest supporters, always encouraging

her. While her family initially struggled to understand her commitment,

One might wonder, beyond its aesthetic allure, what makes Kokedama

for addressing current and future challenges. Earlier this year on

19 January 2024, Prime Minister YAB Dato' Seri Anwar Bin Ibrahim

launched the Malaysia Madani, or Civil Malaysia, slogan.

Before YAB Dato' Seri Anwar Bin Ibrahim, previous prime

ministers also had their unique slogans. YB Dato' Seri Ismail

Sabri Yaakob, the ninth prime minister, introduced Keluarga

Malaysia (Malaysian Family), urging people to uphold family

values, set aside differences, and face challenges unitedly.

Before him, YB Tan Seri Muhyiddin Yassin introduced Malaysia

Prihatin (Caring Government) during the COVID-19 pandemic,

focusing on government concern for people's welfare and wellbeing.

He also announced a RM15 billion economic assistance

package in January 2021 to mitigate the pandemic's impact.

YB Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, when leading the Pakatan

Harapan coalition to victory in 2018, introduced Malaysia Baharu

(New Malaysia), promoting a new era of unity and harmony. In

2009, YB Dato' Seri Najib Razak, introduced 1Malaysia with the

slogan 'Rakyat didahulukan, Pencapaian diutamakan' (People

first, Priorities achieved), which became his guide for his

premiership to re-orient Malaysia toward a new direction geared

towards greater unity and success.

The Malaysia Madani slogan under YAB Dato' Seri Anwar Bin

Ibrahim focuses on transforming Malaysia into a nation that

values humanity and embraces good governance. Madani,

which is also an Arabic word with the connotation of being

modern and civilised, is an acronym for sustainability,

prosperity, innovation, respect, trust, and compassion,

reflecting a comprehensive strategic framework to address

changes post-pandemic.

Anwar emphasises that development and growth should be

viewed through a humane economy, prioritising people's

needs over mere economic metrics. He advocates for a holistic

approach to development, balancing economic and material

growth with the country's humanity.

Anwar's vision also includes resetting Malaysia's direction

regarding race and religion. While maintaining the Malay

majority and emphasising Islamic principles, he ensures that

Malaysia remains a multi-racial nation where no one is left

behind.

As Anwar's administration rolls out its policies, it will be

interesting to see how the Malaysia Madani slogan shapes the

country's future, aiming for a more inclusive, democratic Malaysia

and we look forward to a better Malaysia that brings forth peace

and unity.

EXPLORING

TRADITION

A brief look at the history,

principles and culture that is

Traditional Malay Medicine

Traditional Malay Medicine (TMM) stands as a testament to the rich

cultural heritage of Malaysia, encompassing a diverse array of practices,

beliefs, and remedies that have been passed down through generations.

Rooted in the Malay culture, TMM offers a holistic approach to health and

healing, viewing the human body as a harmonious interplay of elemental

forces and energy. Let's delve into the history, principles, and benefits of

this ancient tradition.

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

111

Historical Roots:

The origins of TMM can be traced back centuries, deeply

intertwined with Malay folklore, indigenous knowledge, and

influences from neighboring cultures. As diverse as Malaysia

itself, TMM draws upon elements of Malay, Chinese, Indian,

and indigenous healing traditions, reflecting the cultural

melting pot that is Malaysia.

Principles of Traditional Malay Medicine:

Central to TMM is the concept of balance – a delicate

equilibrium between the four elemental forces of fire, earth,

wind, and water. These elements, both tangible and assumed,

are believed to govern various aspects of human health

and well-being. The semangat, or soul substance, further

influences an individual's susceptibility to illness, highlighting

the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit.

Another fundamental principle of TMM is the contrast of "hot"

and "cold." Foods and remedies are categorized based on

their thermal properties, with each exerting distinct effects

on the body's fluids and immunity functions. Optimal health

is achieved only when these elemental and thermal influences

are in harmony, underscoring the holistic nature of TMM.

Benefits of Traditional Malay Medicine:

Holistic Healing: TMM takes a comprehensive approach to

health, addressing not only physical symptoms but also

emotional, spiritual, and environmental factors. By treating

the root cause of illness rather than just its symptoms, TMM

promotes holistic healing and long-term well-being.

Natural Remedies:

Many TMM remedies are derived from locally sourced herbs,

plants, and natural ingredients, minimising reliance on

synthetic drugs and chemicals. These natural remedies are

often rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, offering a

gentler alternative to conventional medicine.

Cultural Heritage:

TMM is deeply rooted in Malay culture, serving as a source

of pride and identity for Malaysians. Passed down through

generations by word-of-mouth and practical experience, TMM

embodies the wisdom and resilience of Malaysia's ancestors.

Personalized Care:

Unlike one-size-fits-all approaches, TMM recognizes the

unique constitution of each individual, tailoring treatments

to suit their specific needs and imbalances. This personalized

approach ensures that healthcare is not only effective but

also culturally relevant and empowering.

Complementary to Modern Medicine:

While TMM has its own merits, it is not meant to replace

modern medical interventions. Instead, TMM can

complement conventional healthcare practices, offering

additional avenues for prevention, management, and

recovery.

Jamu, a traditional

Indonesian and

Malaysian herbal drink

112

MAY/JUNE 2024 THRIVE

Dispelling Myths:

Despite its many benefits, TMM is not without its

misconceptions. Common myths, such as the belief that

certain herbs can cure all ailments or that traditional remedies

are universally effective, must be addressed with a critical

eye. By separating fact from fiction and promoting informed

decision-making, we can ensure that TMM continues to

evolve and thrive in the modern world.

Myth 1: Jamu Can Cure Anything

Fact: Jamu, a traditional Indonesian and Malaysian herbal

concoction, is often hailed as a panacea for all ailments.

While it does contain a variety of herbs with potential health

benefits, it’s essential to understand that the efficacy of

jamu varies depending on the specific ingredients and their

concentrations. Some types of jamu may offer genuine health

benefits, such as reducing inflammation or aiding digestion,

but they cannot cure all illnesses. It’s essential to use jamu as

a supplement to a well-rounded healthcare approach.

Myth 2: Tongkat Ali Boosts Testosterone for All Men

Fact: Tongkat Ali is a popular herb in Malaysia, believed to

boost testosterone levels, improve libido, and enhance overall

vitality. While there is some scientific evidence to suggest

that Tongkat Ali may have a positive impact on testosterone

levels, the effects can vary from person to person. It’s not a

one-size-fits-all solution, and it’s crucial to use Tongkat Ali

as part of a broader strategy for improving men’s health,

such as maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise.

Myth 4: Pegaga (Centella asiatica) Erases Memory Loss

Fact: Centella asiatica, known as pegaga in Malaysia, has

been touted as a memory enhancer and brain booster. While

this herb may have cognitive benefits, there is no magical

remedy that can erase memory loss or prevent conditions

like Alzheimer’s disease. Pegaga can be part of a healthy

diet for its potential cognitive benefits, but it should not

replace medical treatment for memory-related conditions.

Myth 3: Turmeric Can Cure Any Infection

Fact: Turmeric, with its active compound curcumin, has

well-documented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant

properties. It can be a valuable part of a healthy diet and

lifestyle. However, while turmeric can support the immune

system and potentially help the body combat infections, it

is not a cure-all. Serious infections should be treated with

conventional medical care, and turmeric should be seen as a

complementary approach to maintaining overall health.

Myth 5: Kacip Fatimah Cures All Women's Health Issues

Fact: Kacip Fatimah is a traditional herb used in Malaysia to

address women’s health concerns, particularly in relation to

reproductive health and libido. While it may offer benefits

for some women, it’s not a universal remedy for all women’s

health issues. Women should consult with healthcare

professionals for personalized advice and treatment options.

In conclusion, Traditional Malay Medicine represents a

treasure trove of cultural heritage, holistic wisdom, and

natural healing. By embracing its principles and benefits

while dispelling myths and misconceptions, we can honour

the legacy of TMM and promote health and well-being for

generations to come.

The origin story of

our national dish – the

humble Nasi Lemak

In the diverse tapestry of Malaysian culture, where

multifaceted influences intermingle, one aspect stands

out as a testament to this rich heritage: its cuisine. Ask

anyone what makes Malaysia truly special, and without

hesitation, they'll likely point you towards its food scene,

a melting pot of delicacies and traditions cherished by

locals and visitors alike.

Malaysia's culinary landscape is a reflection of its

multicultural society, where Malay, Indian, Chinese,

Nyonya (Peranakan), and Eurasian influences converge

to create a symphony of tastes and textures. Amidst the

whirlwind of modernisation, Malaysia has admirably held

onto its culinary roots, offering a rare fusion of traditional

flavours and contemporary innovations.

From left to right: Nasi Lemak

cake that is quickly gaining

popularity; Nasi Lemak sushi

At the heart of this culinary journey lies Nasi

Lemak, an iconic dish revered as Malaysia's

culinary crown jewel. This versatile meal,

beloved by all, embodies the essence

of Malaysian gastronomy. A symphony

of flavourful sensations, Nasi Lemak is a

tantalising blend of coconut milk-infused

rice served with a medley of condiments

including sambal chili paste, peanuts, eggs,

fried anchovies, and cucumber.

Translated as "rich rice," Nasi Lemak owes

its name to the creamy richness imparted

by coconut milk, elevating it from ordinary

fare to a culinary masterpiece. Traditionally

wrapped in banana leaves, this humble dish

exudes both simplicity and sophistication, a

true hallmark of Malaysian cuisine.

Like many beloved dishes, the origins of Nasi

Lemak are shrouded in myth and legend. One

tale speaks of resourceful farmers combining

locally sourced ingredients to create a

satisfying and nourishing meal. Another,

recounts the serendipitous mishap of a young

girl, whose accidental addition of coconut

milk to rice birthed this culinary gem.

Historical records trace Nasi Lemak back to the

early 20th century, mentioned in writings by

British colonial administrators. Yet, its evolution

continues unabated, with contemporary twists

EMBRACING

SOLAR ENERGY

A Step Towards a Sustainable Future

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

137

The shift towards renewable energy is no longer just an environmental consideration; it is an economic

and social imperative. Solar panels, in particular, have emerged as a leading solution to reduce our

dependency on non-renewable energy sources. By harnessing the sun's power, solar energy offers a

clean, sustainable, and economically beneficial alternative. Here, we delve into the benefits of solar panels

and highlight a significant renewable energy project undertaken at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort.

Solar panels, or photovoltaic (PV) panels, convert sunlight into electricity using semiconductors.

When sunlight hits these semiconductors, it excites electrons, creating an electric current. This

process is both clean and efficient, producing electricity without emitting harmful pollutants or

greenhouse gases. Solar panels can be installed on rooftops, open fields, or even integrated into

building materials, making them versatile and adaptable to various settings.

138

JULY/AUGUST 2024 THRIVE

BENEFITS OF SWITCHING TO SOLAR ENERGY

Environmental Impact: The primary advantage of solar

energy is its minimal environmental impact. Unlike fossil

fuels, solar power does not produce carbon emissions,

helping to combat climate change and reduce air

pollution. This shift towards clean energy is crucial for

preserving ecosystems and ensuring a healthier planet

for future generations.

Tropicana Golf & Country

Resort (TGCR) embarked on a

significant renewable energy

project in 2021 installing 2,214

solar photovoltaic panels,

covering 53,204 square feet of

rooftop space on the clubhouse

Economic Savings: Investing in solar panels can lead to

significant cost savings over time. Although the initial

installation cost can be substantial, the long-term

benefits outweigh these expenses. Solar energy reduces

reliance on traditional power sources, resulting in lower

electricity bills. Additionally, many governments offer

incentives and subsidies to encourage solar adoption,

further enhancing its economic viability.

Energy Independence: Solar energy provides a pathway

to energy independence. By generating electricity onsite,

individuals and businesses can reduce their reliance

on external energy providers. This autonomy not only

stabilises energy costs but also enhances energy

security, shielding users from market fluctuations and

supply disruptions.

TROPICANA GOLF & COUNTRY RESORT

In a landmark initiative to reduce dependency on nonrenewable

energy, Tropicana Golf & Country Resort

(TGCR) in Petaling Jaya embarked on a significant

renewable energy project in 2021. The resort installed

2,214 solar photovoltaic panels, covering 53,204 square

feet of rooftop space on the clubhouse.

PROJECT TIMELINE AND IMPLEMENTATION

The installation of the solar panels began in March 2021,

with the project reaching full operational status by

September 2021. The panels were strategically placed

to maximize sunlight exposure, ensuring optimal energy

production throughout the year.

FINANCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

The benefits of this installation have been profound.

TGCR has managed to generate substantial savings of

RM427,347 in energy bills annually. This financial relief

underscores the economic advantages of investing

in solar technology. Furthermore, the resort's shift to

solar energy contributes to a significant reduction in

carbon emissions, aligning with global efforts to combat

climate change.

The installation of solar panels at Tropicana Golf &

Country Resort exemplifies the transformative potential

of renewable energy projects. By embracing solar

power, TGCR not only demonstrates environmental

stewardship but also showcases the tangible economic

benefits of such initiatives. As the world continues to

seek sustainable solutions, solar energy stands out as

a beacon of hope, offering a cleaner, greener, and more

prosperous future.
