be it big or small in our aim to make a difference to the

communities. This month, Tropicana Foundation collected

donations of soft furnishings where, after careful sifting and

quality checks, were donated to two local homes – Pusat

Jagaan Kasih Harapan and Rumah Sentuhan Budi. The

decorative items were 26 large table lamps and 30 sets of

thick curtains and light sheers. These will help to enhance the

living environments of these homes, providing a warm and

welcoming atmosphere for the children.

The lamps will bring much-needed light to study areas and

bedrooms, while the 30 sets of curtains and sheers will offer privacy

your stance, setup, and posture is crucial. These elements are the

foundation of your golf game, and even seasoned professionals

spend considerable time perfecting them. Don’t underestimate

the importance of getting these basics right.

GRIPPING YOUR CLUB

As a beginner, you'll hear about the three main types of golf

grips: the overlap, the interlock, and the ten-finger grip. Choose

the grip that feels most comfortable to you, ensuring that the

club sits in your fingers rather than your palm. The grip you

choose should provide comfort and effective results. Remember,

you can always adjust your grip as you advance in the game.

PROPER EQUIPMENT

With the boom of the Johor property market, the state secured one of the highest

foreign investment funds totalling RM63.9 billion in 2023. Tapping into Johor’s huge

potential, Tropicana plans to develop two townships, Lido Waterfront Boulevard

in Johor City Centre and Tropicana Uplands in Gelang Patah. These two mega

developments are projected to be over RM35 billion in Gross Development Value

(“GDV”). With Johor experiencing a phase of accelerated growth, Tropicana aims to

tap into this huge potential and transform these signature townships into a dynamic

metropolis of the Southern region.

LIDO WATERFRONT BOULEVARD

Strategically located on 163 acres of reclaimed land along the waterfront bordering

Singapore, Lido Waterfront Boulevard is an integrated mixed development with

freehold status integrating green, smart and sustainable elements. This RM34

billion GDV master development will feature sectors such as healthcare, medical

tourism, hospitality, recreational and lifestyle offering, which are among the sectors

A 25-minute drive to the west of Johor Bahru is Tropicana Uplands, a new 314-acre

Johor Bahru also referred to as JB, is a city situated at the southern end of the

Training for several hours every day, with a day off

on Sundays, she maintains a rigorous schedule to stay

in top form. Even when she was in France, training

in a small town before the Olympics, she kept her

focus sharp with the help of a dedicated chef who

ensured she had nutritious meals. It’s clear that Pearly

understands the importance of both physical and

I needed to perform." This constant stream of positive

reinforcement was a lifeline, helping her maintain her

composure during the most nerve-wracking moments.

During the competition, Pearly was not alone in facing these

mental hurdles. Playing in the Women’s Doubles, she always

had her partner by her side. "When we both felt nervous,

we would talk about the match the next day, discuss our

strategies, and share our fears and doubts. This really helped

relieve the stress. Being able to share our thoughts and

support each other made a huge difference."

Pearly’s approach to calming herself down and believing in

herself proved invaluable. "For me, it’s all about believing in

yourself. When there is belief, nothing is impossible," she said.

This mantra carried her through the Olympics and remains a

guiding principle in her life.

As Pearly Tan continues her journey in badminton, her

DISCONNECT IN ORDER TO RECONNECT

VitaHealth recently teamed up with Tropicana to jointly host

Malaysia’s longest Offline 16 event. This also saw Pearly’s journey

to mental resilience coincide with her involvement in VitaHealth’s

"Offline 16" event, held on 17 August 2024 at the Tropicana Golf &

Country Resort. The event challenged 300 participants to disconnect

from their devices for 16 consecutive hours in a bid to reconnect with

themselves and those around them.

This groundbreaking event, which paid homage to World Mental Health

Day, offered a unique opportunity for participants to experience the

benefits of unplugging from the digital world. It was a day filled with

engaging activities designed to promote mental wellness, including

fitness challenges, a therapy sanctuary, and a stand-up comedy

performance by Douglas Lim. Pearly herself led a badminton session,

sharing her tips on overcoming mental challenges with the attendees.

“In recent years, the prevalence of mental health issues has become

a global concern. Apart from the usual triggers such as family

dynamics, work stress, and financial pressures, widespread exposure

to digital platforms and gadgets have emerged as one of the main

contributors. It has significantly impacted our lives, often leading

to increased stress levels. Inspired by these insights we initiated

Offline 16, an empowering event that will raise awareness to the

importance of unplugging from digital devices. Coinciding with the

77th anniversary of VitaHealth, this ESG endeavour reinforces our

commitment towards holistic well-being,” shared Dr KS Beh.

“By partnering with Tropicana, this joint effort will bring a myriad

of benefits to the participants – offering sensory, personalised, and

impactful experiences for one to unplug, unwind and recharge. In

addition, we are happy to share that Offline 16 is setting a new record

in the Malaysia Book of Records as the most accumulated offline

hours in a day,” Dr Beh added.

Journey With Stiff-

Person Syndrome

Celine Dion made a powerful return to the stage by performing at

the Olympic Games, marking her first live performance in years.

The iconic Canadian singer chose to sing a French classic from

atop the Eiffel Tower, creating an unforgettable moment during

the ceremony.

Dion delivered a breathtaking rendition of Edith Piaf’s “Hymne à

L'Amour,” turning Paris’ most famous landmark into the backdrop

for a moving performance. This timeless song has now seen a

resurgence, climbing back onto the World Digital Song Sales chart

due to increased purchases linked to the Olympics.

This performance was especially poignant, as it marked Dion’s

return to the spotlight amid her ongoing battle with Stiff-Person

Syndrome (SPS). The Grammy-winning artist, who revealed her

diagnosis in 2022, provided an update on her health, sharing, "The

disease is still with me, and it will always be a part of my life."

Despite her condition, Dion remained active on stage for years,

completing her Las Vegas residency and additional tours. However,

behind the scenes, she struggled with severe muscle stiffness,

which eventually made it difficult for her to walk unassisted. Even

as her symptoms worsened, Dion tried to keep them hidden,

particularly during her late husband René Angélil’s fight against

throat cancer starting in 2014.

As her illness progressed, it increasingly impacted her ability to sing

and perform daily tasks. “It’s like being suffocated,” Dion revealed,

sharing that she had experienced broken ribs from spasms and

periods of complete immobilisation in her hands and feet.

Determined to continue performing, Dion was prescribed muscle

relaxants, including Valium. What began as a 2-milligram dose

escalated to 90 milligrams—a dangerously high amount—just to

get through her concerts. “I didn’t question it because I trusted

the doctors. I thought it would be fine,” she explained. “It worked

for a while, but eventually, it didn’t help anymore.”

In October 2021, Dion postponed 21 shows and delayed the

opening of her new Las Vegas residency due to severe muscle

spasms. By January 2022, she had to cancel the remainder of her

North American tour.

"I hope that medical research will eventually find a cure, but for

now, I have to learn to live with this," she said. "I undergo physical

and vocal therapy five days a week. I’m working on everything—

my toes, knees, calves, fingers, voice—learning to live with this

condition and stop doubting myself."

Dion expressed her gratitude for the love and support she has

received from her family, children, fans, and team, which has

been instrumental in her battle against SPS, a rare autoimmune

neurological disorder. "Not everyone with SPS has access to good

doctors and treatments, and I’m fortunate to have those resources.

That’s a blessing, and I also have an inner strength that keeps me

going. Nothing is going to stop me."

When asked if she plans to return to the stage after her emotional

Olympic performance, Dion was uncertain. "I can’t say for sure,"

she admitted. "I’ve told myself I’m ready, then I’m not ready.

Right now, I can’t promise anything. My body will let me know."

Here are some easy tips to reduce

carbon emissions

Climate change is largely fueled by rising concentrations of

CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, mainly

from burning fossil fuels. However, the Earth’s forests, soils,

and natural ecosystems can significantly mitigate this harmful

accumulation. Here are some easy strategies to promote natural

climate solutions for reducing atmospheric carbon.

FOOD

Eat low on the food chain: This involves primarily consuming fruits,

vegetables, grains, and beans. Livestock production—meat and

dairy—accounts for 14.5% of human-induced global greenhouse

gas emissions (which is 25 times more effective than CO2 at

trapping heat in the atmosphere over 100 years). By skipping meat

and dairy for just one day, you can lower your carbon footprint

by 8 pounds, which adds up to 2,920 pounds annually. Consider

incorporating Meatless Mondays into the weekly routine.

Reduce food waste and composte: Reduce your food waste by

planning meals ahead of time, freezing the excess and reusing

leftovers. Composting food waste is also a good way to upcycle

what is unwanted.

CLOTHING

Don’t buy fast fashion: Trendy, inexpensive items that

quickly go out of style often end up in landfills, where they

decompose and release methane. On average, about 80

pounds of clothing is thrown away each year, with 85% of

it ending up in landfills. Additionally, most fast fashion is

produced in countries like China and Bangladesh, meaning

its transport consumes significant fossil fuels. Instead, opt

for high-quality clothing that will endure over time. Even

better, shop for vintage or recycled clothing at consignment

stores.

Buy in bulk and choose organic, local foods: Transporting

food from far away, whether by truck, ship, rail or plane, uses

fossil fuels for fuel and for cooling to keep foods in transit from

spoiling. Buy foodstuffs in bulk whenever possible using your

own reusable container will reduce trips to the grocers and the

use of plastic.

Cold water wash: Wash your clothes in cold water. Cold

water detergents are formulated to work more effectively

at lower temperatures due to its enzymes. By washing just

two loads of laundry per week in cold water instead of hot

or warm, you can save up to 500 pounds of carbon dioxide

annually.

Buy and use less: Stop buying and shopping in excess and opt to buy

Go environmentally friendly: If shopping for appliances, lighting, office

Do an energy audit: This will show how you use or waste energy and

help identify ways to be more energy efficient. Sign up to get your

electricity from clean energy through your local utility or a certified

(LEDs). Though LEDs cost more, they use a quarter of the energy and

last up to 25 times longer.

remove air pollutants like benzene, formaldehyde, and to a lesser extent, trichloroethylene (TCE),

according to a 1989 NASA study.

Care Instructions: Snake plants prefer warm, bright environments but can tolerate some shade or

low light. They should be watered more frequently in the spring and summer, and less so during the

fall and winter. Note that they are toxic if ingested by pets.

GOLDEN POTHOS

The golden pothos or devil’s ivy, is easily recognized by its broad, heart-shaped leaves with golden

Care Instructions: Golden pothos thrives in medium to high indirect light and a humid environment.

Care Instructions: Spider plants thrive in medium to

bright light and cool to average temperatures. They

can grow in soil or a soilless environment and require

frequent repotting due to their fast growth.

Dracaena plants have various species,

stalk. Several Dracaena varieties have

been found by NASA to remove TCE,

benzene, and formaldehyde from the air.

The 'Janet Craig' variety is particularly

effective at removing benzene.

Care Instructions: Most Dracaena

plants prefer low to medium indirect

light, with few tolerating brighter

conditions. Water these plants with

distilled water or rainwater when the

soil is about 75% dry, allowing water to

drain thoroughly. They should be kept

away from cold or hot drafts. Note that

Dracaena plants are toxic to pets.

FERNS

Ferns encompass thousands of species,

reproducing via spores. They are nontoxic,

leafy plants that can vary greatly

in size and shape. Ferns, particularly

the Japanese royal fern, are known for

their strong air purification abilities,

especially in removing formaldehyde.

The Boston fern is also notable for its

ability to reduce carbon dioxide levels

indoors.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Ferns thrive in

warm, humid environments and require

minimal light. They should be kept in
