JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2025 TALK
TROPICANA &
BANYAN GROUP
sign agreement to build Skypark Kepler
branded residences in Lido Waterfront Boulevard
Tropicana Corporation Berhad is excited to announce the
signing of its first residential project with Banyan Group
to develop the stylish Skypark Kepler, a freehold branded
residence located at the coastal jewel of Johor. Offering
comprehensive conveniences and smart city living,
this landmark development represents the inaugural
collaboration with Banyan Group and partners Samsung
and Kohler, which will provide premium fittings and
finishes, including smart appliances and sanitary wares.
In November 2024, Tropicana unveiled its latest crown
jewel in Johor, an RM80 billion township at the 163-
acre Lido Waterfront Boulevard. Starting strong,
Lido’s Skypark Kepler is the first branded residential
development and the most luxurious high-rise in Johor.
Discerning homeowners of these visionary serviced
apartments will enjoy global benefits from the Banyan
Group including the Banyan Living rental programme
and the Banyan Sanctuary Club programme. Banyan
Group is an independent global hospitality company
with purpose. Driven by a mission of stewardship and
responsible tourism, Banyan Group brings its pioneering
spirit and commitment to design-led experiences to
over 20 countries with its 12 global brands. In 2024,
Banyan Tree, the Group’s flagship brand, celebrates
30 years of providing sanctuary to global travellers
in awe-inspiring destinations worldwide, from Phuket
in Thailand and AlUla in Saudi Arabia to Mayakoba in
Mexico and Lijiang in China.
Datuk Mark Rozario, Group CEO of Tropicana shared,
“Tropicana continues to explore new frontiers with our
signature developments. With Skypark Kepler, we want
to curate transformative experiences for our property
purchasers where they can enjoy smart-city living
coupled with a luxurious lifestyle within a sustainable
environment. We are proud to be partnering with global
brands Banyan Group, Samsung and Kohler on our first
branded Skypark Kepler residences.”
“Lido is Tropicana’s crown jewel in Johor and our private
preview in Singapore received a positive response and
attracted more than 600 visitors. Coupled with our
expertise in the property industry and partnership with
these international corporations, we are confident this
project will attract a wider audience from investors,
Singapore residents to lifestyle-seeking purchasers. In
addition, the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone
will serve as a catalyst to boost bilateral economic
cooperation and unlock growth potentials in Malaysia
and Singapore. This will enhance the trade and
connectivity between these two countries, encouraging
technology transfer, and stimulating growth across
various industries. Our Skypark Kepler will be the perfect
residential choice for business travellers, upgraders and
savvy investors,” Datuk Mark added.
Set to be the new pulse of Johor City Centre, Lido is home
to 7 key components such as residential, commercial,
wellness, education, hospitality, recreational and
other lifestyle offerings. Of the many unique selling
points of Lido are its freehold international zoning,
close proximity to the RTS link (less than 5km &
approximately 7 – 10-minute drive), fully-furnished
layouts with an unobstructed waterfront view, 2.5km
waterfront boardwalk, Samsung smart home features,
green-certified building, and multi-tiered security. The
Skypark Kepler certainly lives up to its name as the
coastal jewel of Johor offering all-around conveniences
and smart city living.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Stuart Reading,
Managing Director, Property Development of Banyan
Group said, “We are pleased to partner with Tropicana
to introduce Skypark Kepler Residences, our first in
Malaysia. This will be the eighth property in the Skypark
portfolio, extending our footprint across Thailand,
Vietnam and South Korea and further enhancing our
global collection of branded residences. Property

TROPICANA’S ESG PRACTICES
Tropicana’s steadfast commitment to ESG practices bolsters its
reputation as a leading master developer. During the construction
of Tropicana Aman, leaves weighing approximately 1 ton,
were collected every 4 to 5 days for offsite composting, while
sustainable materials such as recycled concrete and steel were
used to conserve resources. Low Volatile Organic Compound
(VOC) adhesives and paints were incorporated to improve
indoor air quality, and water efficiency was prioritised with
rainwater harvesting tanks for landscape irrigation and sanitary
wares that reduce water wastage by up to 40%. The lake at the
85-acre Central Park also serves as stormwater management in
the case of flooding due to constant heavy downpours.
Energy-saving measures include 4-star-rated air conditioning
systems, low-energy lighting that consumes 70% less energy,
and efficient lighting for common areas. A robust recycling
programme further reduces landfill contributions and promotes
sustainability. Complementing these efforts, Tropicana
organised impactful CSR events, such as the Buka Puasa CSR
Programme, A Joyous Christmas Charity Event for Children
from orphanages, the Tropicana Go-Go-FIT Cycle event, the Ti-
Ratana Foundation CSR Programme and various other charity
events, reinforcing its commitment to community well-being
and environmental stewardship.

LITHERING
GOOD TIME
As we celebrate the Year of the Snake,
we look at Italy’s snake festival otherwise
known as Festa dei Serpari
44
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2025 TRAVEL
Italy is a land of festivals, where ancient traditions meet lively
celebrations. From colourful flower parades to sumptuous feasts of
local delicacies, these events are a window into the heart of Italian
culture. But once in a while, a festival comes along that is, quite
literally, snakes and ladders above the rest.
The festival’s origins are a fascinating blend of pagan rituals and
Christian devotion. For over 400 years, the people of Cocullo have
honoured St. Dominic, believed to protect against snakebites and
toothaches (an oddly specific combination). While some festivals
stick to flowers or pastries, Cocullo has boldly gone where few
dare—into the realm of serpents.
Clockwise: Patron St Dominic
covered in snakes as tribute
to protect against snakebites
and toothaches; Little girls
holding a couple of snakes
native to their region;
Musicians and fellow parade
participants are too covered
in these slithering friends
The celebration kicks off weeks in advance, on 19th March, when
local serpari (snake charmers) begin catching their slithery
participants. Don’t worry—they’re all non-venomous and, thankfully,
handled with expertise. The snakes are the stars of the show, but
they’re treated with care (though the fang-removal tradition raises
an ethical eyebrow).
The festival’s pièce de résistance takes place on the first Thursday
in May: a grand procession where a statue of St. Dominic, entwined
with live snakes, is paraded through the town. The sight is equal
parts awe-inspiring and chilling—a saintly figure cloaked in a
writhing snake cape, gliding through cheering crowds.
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
45
The procession isn’t just for show. As the snake-covered statue winds
its way through the streets, it’s said to bless onlookers and their pets,
ensuring protection from snakebites and other earthly woes.
Once the procession ends, the mood in Cocullo shifts to one of
festivity. The town square comes alive with laughter, music, and
local delicacies. And then comes the grand finale: the ceremonial
release of the snakes back into nature. This poignant moment
symbolises life’s cyclical beauty, a nod to the festival’s pagan roots.
As night falls, Cocullo bids farewell to the serpentine spectacle with a
dazzling fireworks display over the Apennine Mountains. The village
returns to its tranquil charm, but for those who’ve experienced the
Serpari Festival, the memories are anything but quiet.
Cocullo’s Festa dei Serpari isn’t just a celebration; it’s a glimpse into
a world where faith, folklore, and fearless snake-wrangling collide.
For those seeking a truly unique cultural experience, this festival
offers a story to tell long after the snakes have slithered away.
So, if you find yourself in Italy come May, why not take a trip to
Cocullo? After all, how often do you get to see a saint wearing a
snakeskin suit—not metaphorically, but literally?

Mahjong: The Classic Tile Game
of Strategy and Luck
Few games blend tradition, strategy, and a dash of luck quite like Mahjong.
Originating in China over 300 years ago, this "mind sport" has become a beloved
pastime across Asia and beyond. With its beautifully designed tiles and engaging
gameplay, Mahjong offers endless entertainment while challenging players to
think on their feet.
THE BASICS OF MAHJONG
The game requires four players, a set of 144 tiles adorned with Chinese symbols,
and a balance of sharp strategy and good fortune. The goal? To create a winning
hand of four melds (or suits) and one pair, for a total of 14 tiles.
50

HOW TO PLAY MAHJONG IN 8 STEPS
1. Shuffle the Tiles: Place all tiles face down and mix them up.
2. Determine the Dealer: Roll the dice; the player with the highest
roll becomes the dealer.
3. Build Walls: Each player selects 36 tiles and stacks them into
two rows of 18, forming "walls" on the table.
4. Set the Playing Area: Push the walls forward, leaving the centre
open for discarded tiles.
5. Distribute Tiles: Players draw 13 tiles each, starting with the
dealer.
6. Start Playing: The first player draws a tile, then keeps or discards
it to maintain 13 tiles. Play moves clockwise as players draw from
the pool or pick up discarded tiles.
7. Form Melds: Combine tiles into a Pong (three identical tiles),
Kong (four identical tiles), or Chow (three consecutive tiles
of the same suit). Announce and display melds when using a
discarded tile.
8. Declare Victory: The first player to complete four melds and a
pair shouts “Sik wu!” or “Mahjong!” and wins.
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
51
LUCK OR SKILL? WHY NOT BOTH?
Like gin rummy, Mahjong is a perfect blend of luck and strategy.
Winning requires a sharp mind for meld-building and a healthy dose
of fortune with the tiles you draw.
Whether you’re a seasoned player or a curious beginner, Mahjong
is the perfect way to engage your mind, connect with friends, and
carry on a centuries-old tradition. Ready to play? Build those walls
and let the tiles tell your fortune!
SECONDARY STORY
For any family that takes Chinese New Year seriously, a mahjong
set isn’t just a want—it’s a must. This nostalgic game, often called
China’s “national pastime,” brings joy to all generations. While your
old set may hold sentimental value, a festive occasion deserves a
touch of luxury. These stunning mahjong sets will have your guests
playing into the night in style!

township that is as much about building homes as it is about building

Green Construction: Materials like recycled concrete and low-VOC paints enhance

tonne of leaves every few days keep landfill contributions minimal.
Even the Central Park’s lake doubles as a stormwater management system, a

LIVING WELL, LIVING CONNECTED
Tropicana Aman’s location is as convenient as it is serene. With quick access to
major highways like Kesas, SKVE, Elite and other major highways, the township is

A VOICE
BEYOND THE
AIRWAVES
Wearing many hats, Chan Fong
shares his journey of growth from
his days as a radio announcer
to founding his own advertising
company and now acting
For over three decades, Chan Fong has been a familiar and beloved
name across Malaysia. At 54, the multi-talented 988FM broadcaster and
Managing Director of 180 Degrees Brandcom Sdn Bhd continues to balance
the art of storytelling, entrepreneurship, and a fulfilling personal life.
Whether through his engaging radio shows, his entrepreneurial ventures,
or his foray into acting, Chan Fong remains a master at connecting with
people on multiple fronts. With his upcoming Chinese New Year movie
OMG! Mom's Big News, Chan Fong proves once again that his versatility
knows no bounds.
A JOURNEY INTO RADIO
Chan Fong’s foray into radio was a happy accident—a career path he never
saw coming. “I always wanted to be in the entertainment industry,” he
shares. “While studying advertising and graphic design, I heard a radio
drama segment on Rediffusion (now 988FM) and discovered the voice
actors were part-timers. I called to ask if they had openings, and while they
didn’t at the time, they liked my voice and invited me as a trainee. That
eventually led to my first stint as a voice actor.”

A year later, fate intervened again when Chan was
approached to host his own radio show—a decision
that marked the beginning of a storied career. Since
then, the radio industry has undergone monumental
changes, including the integration of digital channels,
podcasts, and livestreaming platforms. “Back then, we
couldn’t even say words like 'pig' or 'pork', let alone
touch on sensitive topics like current affairs,” Chan
recalls with a chuckle. “Now, it’s a whole new world
with endless opportunities for engagement.”
His energy and creativity on air remain as infectious as ever.
“Passion is key. You need to love what you do and think
about how you can contribute to society. I always keep
myself updated and curious about the world,” he says.
I always keep
myself updated
and curious
about the world
Some of his most memorable moments include covering
critical topics like elections, 9/11, and the COVID-19
pandemic. However, it’s the heartfelt moments on his
night show that resonate deeply. “Listeners often call
in to discuss personal issues—relationships, family
matters, and more. It’s a privilege to be able to guide
them towards the right choices and help them develop
a better conscience.”
FROM RADIO TO BUSINESS
While Chan’s career as a broadcaster brought him
recognition, his entrepreneurial journey reflects his
ambition and vision. He co-founded 180 Degrees
Brandcom Sdn Bhd, an advertising and branding
agency that has grown to great success. “After
graduating, I spent seven years without an opportunity
in my field of study. Then a friend invited me to invest
as a silent partner in an advertising business, and
before I knew it, I was fully involved.”

His advice for aspiring business owners is simple yet
profound: “Don’t be greedy. Earn what you deserve.
There are no secrets to success.” For Chan Fong, the
business is not just a financial venture but a reflection
of his values. “We treat every project like it’s our own
business, especially when working with SMEs. Our
vision is to help them become number one.”
Balancing his dual responsibilities as a radio personality
and entrepreneur is no small feat, but Chan has learned
to set boundaries. “Radio is less stressful than running
a business. I’ve learned not to bring work home and to
stay present in the moment.”
OMG! Mom's Big News: Bringing Family to the Big Screen
This January, Chan Fong steps into yet another role—
as actor and producer for OMG! Mom's Big News, a
Chinese New Year movie set to premiere on the first
day of the festival. The film was inspired by an amusing
personal moment when Chan thought his wife was
unexpectedly pregnant in her late 40s. “I panicked
about having to prepare for a baby all over again,” he
laughs. “Luckily, it was a false alarm! But I thought it
would make for a fun movie plot—and that’s how OMG!
Mom's Big News was born.”
Since then, the
radio industry
has undergone
monumental changes,
including the
integration of digital
channels, podcasts,
and livestreaming
platforms
Starring alongside celebrated actress Anita Yuen,
Chan admits feeling both nervous and thrilled. “She’s
such a big star but also incredibly fun to work with.
The character I play is similar to my real life—a father
managing family dynamics—so it wasn’t too difficult to
get into the role.”
The first few days on set were tense, as Chan shares,
“Anita was feeling stressed since we were not familiar
with each other. Additionally, this was my first time
producing a movie, and the crew, including the
director, were also new to the movie industry, despite
having over 20 years of experience in TV drama and
commercials. However, after that, Anita really enjoyed
herself, and we all worked well together. She saw that
all of us were putting our hearts into making the movie.
Anita was especially happy when we brought in a lot of
delicious food, including a Lok Lok food truck.”

The movie carries a meaningful message for audiences
as they celebrate the new year. “It’s about family values,
communication between parents and children, and
appreciating life. These are universal themes that will resonate
with everyone,” Chan says.
A FAMILY MAN AT HEART
Despite his hectic schedule, Chan Fong remains deeply
committed to his family. Years ago, he made the significant
decision to stop emceeing on weekends to spend more
time with his children. “They were pre-teens at the time,
and I felt I needed to be there for them,” he shares. Today,
family gatherings remain sacred, especially during festive
seasons.
LOOKING AHEAD
As Chan Fong approaches the next chapter of his life, he
envisions a gradual transition. “I hope to retire from the
advertising firm in the coming years to focus on discovering
life and sharing my experiences with my followers,” he
reflects. Professionally, he dreams of producing award-winning
advertisements and acting in more movies. On a personal level,
he jokes, “I just want to become slimmer and look more active!”
For now, Chan finds joy in the simple things: watching TV,
enjoying good food, playing Chinese chess, and jogging.
“I unwind by just chilling and relaxing,” he says. His family
enjoys trips to good restaurants, the occasional movie, and a
yearly overseas getaway – “a simple but happy life,” he adds.
“I don’t involve my family in my work, and I rarely post about
them on social media,” he adds, underlining the importance of
keeping his private life grounded. As a parent, his focus is on
instilling good morals and values in his children—principles he
lives by every day.
Whether on the airwaves, in boardrooms, or on the big screen, Chan
Fong remains a shining example of balance, humility, and passion.
As his story continues to unfold, audiences can look forward to
seeing even more of this inspiring man in the years to come. OMG!
Mom's Big News will be in cinemas on 29 January 2025.

The Chinese culture is built on many superstitions
so here is a list of items of what not to give for
Chinese New Year
Celebrating Chinese New Year with Chinese friends is a brilliant idea—fireworks, food, and festivities!
That said, the cultural gap can be as wide as the Great Wall. Here’s your cheeky guide to 7 gifts to avoid,
along with the superstitions that make them a total no-no.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2025 TIPS
HATS — MOURNING MADNESS
Hats, particularly green ones, are a gifting minefield. A
green hat implies infidelity, and any hat can remind folks of
mourning traditions. Fancy being the bearer of grief? Didn’t
think so.
BLACK OR WHITE GIFTS — FUNERAL CHIC?
Black and white are fine for minimalist decor, but in Chinese
culture, they scream “funeral.” Choose to go with red—lucky,
festive, and the colour of ang pau packets.
CUT FLOWERS — FOR FUNERAL FANS ONLY
Flowers are lovely—except when they’re cut. White or yellow
chrysanthemums? Those are reserved for funerals. Best not to
deliver an unwelcome floral faux pas.
MIRRORS — WHO’S AFRAID OF GHOSTS?
Mirrors are rumoured to attract ghosts, and breaking one
is bad luck across cultures. Play it safe: let people admire
themselves in their own mirror.
SHOES — KICKING BAD VIBES AROUND
Shoes are seen as unlucky because they’re “stepped on” and
the word sounds like “evil.” Gifting shoes says, “Here, have
some bad luck.” Charming.
ANYTHING WITH ‘4’ — DEATHLY UNLUCKY
The number four sounds like “death” in Chinese. Avoid
anything in sets of four or with the dreaded digit. Even hotel
elevators skip the fourth floor—take the hint.
CLOCKS OR WATCHES — TIME’S UP!
A clock or watch is the ultimate no-no. In Chinese, gifting a clock
sounds like attending a funeral. Plus, it symbolises time running
out—a cheerful thought for anyone, especially the elderly.
So, there you have it—seven things to absolutely not give this
Chinese New Year. Stick to safe bets like oranges, tea, or red
envelopes stuffed with cash. Your friends will thank you, and
you’ll avoid being the person who brought flowers to the party.
Happy Chinese New Year, and may your gifting game be strong!

ANCIENT ART
THERAPY
Unlocking the Secrets
of Traditional Chinese
Medicine
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
99
When you think about health and wellness, a 3,000-year-old tradition might not be the
first thing that comes to mind. But Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is more than just
ancient wisdom—it's a fascinating blend of mind, body, and nature working together to
keep you feeling fabulous. Curious? Let’s explore TCM’s key components, what they can
do for you, and how to navigate this intriguing world safely.
Think of TCM as the OG of holistic health. Rooted in practices that have been refined over
millennia, it includes approaches like acupuncture, tai chi, and herbal remedies. The goal?
To restore balance and harmony in your body and mind.
100
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2025 THRIVE
It’s not just about tackling symptoms—TCM dives deep
into understanding the why behind your discomfort.
While it might seem mystical, there’s plenty of science
investigating these age-old techniques, making it a
captivating choice for wellness seekers.
1. Acupuncture: Tiny Needles, Big Results
Acupuncture may sound daunting (needles?
really?!), but it’s all about precision. Practitioners
insert ultra-thin needles at specific points on your
body to stimulate healing. Research suggests it
can help with:
Chronic Pain: Relief for backaches, knee pain, and
even carpal tunnel.
Headaches: Reduces tension headaches and may
prevent migraines.
While some argue the placebo effect plays a part,
many swear by its calming, pain-relieving magic.
Bonus: it might even make you feel blissfully zen after
a session.
2. Tai Chi: A Slow Dance for Your Body and Soul
Imagine a gentle, flowing routine that’s as much
about mindfulness as it is about movement.
That’s tai chi! Originating from martial arts, tai chi
combines balance, posture, and deep breathing to
boost your well-being.
Here’s what it might help with:
Better Balance: Perfect for older adults or those
with Parkinson’s.
Pain Relief: Soothes knee osteoarthritis and back pain.
Mood Booster: Elevates quality of life for heart
failure patients.
Plus, its meditative vibe makes it a perfect antidote to
modern-day stress.
3. Herbal Remedies: Nature’s Medicine Cabinet
TCM herbs are like the superheroes of the plant
world—used for ailments ranging from the
common cold to heart health. While they sound
miraculous, not all herbs are created equal.
102
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2025 THRIVE
Why the caution? Some herbal products have
been found to contain heavy metals, undeclared
ingredients, or even toxic plants. Quality control
matters, so always consult an expert before diving
into TCM’s botanical offerings.
If you’re ready to explore TCM, here’s how to get
started:
Do Your Homework: Check the credentials of your
TCM practitioner.
Teamwork is Key: Share your TCM plans with your
healthcare provider for safe, coordinated care.
Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body
responds and keep communication open with your
practitioner.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Acupuncture: Always choose a licensed practitioner
to avoid risks like infections or improper needle
placement.
Herbs: Quality and authenticity are key. Speak to your
healthcare provider, especially if you’re pregnant,
nursing, or have an existing condition.
Tai Chi: Generally safe, though it’s wise to consult
your doctor if you’re starting a new exercise routine.
Ready to give it a go? Whether you’re seeking
balance, relief, or just a fresh perspective on health,
TCM could be the ancient remedy your modern life
has been waiting for.
A Timeless Wellness Journey
Traditional Chinese Medicine isn’t just about tradition—
it’s a treasure trove of techniques that can complement
modern medicine beautifully. From the calming
embrace of tai chi to the precise touch of acupuncture,
TCM offers a unique path to feeling your best.

As Chinese New Year approaches, the festive spirit is palpable
and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a sumptuous
meal with the tantalising aroma of delicacies and the warmth
of togetherness. For those looking to combine tradition,
heritage, and culinary innovation, Chinese Palace is the place to
be. Nestled in the iconic KL Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall in
Kampung Attap, this restaurant not only serves exceptional food
but also offers a dining experience steeped in history and charm.
The KL Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, gazetted as the first
Chinese Cultural Heritage building in Malaysia, provides the perfect
backdrop for the restaurant’s Nanyang-inspired design. With its
carefully preserved fixtures and timeless charm, the venue exudes
an ambiance that transports you to a different era—where stories
of migration and tradition converge over fine dining.
Opened in December 2022, the restaurant is the brainchild of
ten passionate friends who envisioned a place that honours
their ancestral roots. Drawing inspiration from the early
20th century, when Chinese immigrants gathered at the hall
speaking various dialects, the restaurant’s interior echoes the
wooden ships that brought them to Kuala Lumpur.
Under the expert guidance of the legendary Master Chef
Frankie Woo, who now serves as Culinary Director, Chinese
Palace offers an extensive menu of modern Cantonese
cuisine infused with Western and Japanese influences. After
a remarkable 11-year retirement, Woo has stepped back
into the culinary spotlight, bringing with him decades of
expertise and a passion for innovation.
126
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2025 TASTE
A prodigy in the kitchen, Woo began honing his culinary craft at the age of 13.
His illustrious career led him through prestigious five-star hotels and acclaimed
restaurants in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Renowned for his unique
ability to harmonise diverse culinary traditions, Woo’s creations consistently push the
boundaries of fine dining.

Before retiring, Woo was the visionary behind Gu Yue Tien at Chulan Square. At a
time when individually plated course meals were predominantly a Western concept,
he pioneered the introduction of Chinese fine dining, reshaping the culinary landscape
and leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
A NEW SPIN ON TRADITION
Our meal began with a dish synonymous with Chinese New Year: the Yee Sang.
However, Chinese Palace takes this dish to new heights with their Soft-Shell Crab and
White Truffle Oil Yee Sang, made almost entirely of fresh fruits and organic vegetables.
Vibrant ingredients like jackfruit, pomelo, and rose apple paired beautifully with their

signature strawberry sauce, offering a refreshing twist on the typically
sweet and tangy original. The crispy soft-shell crab added a satisfying
crunch, making this a memorable start to the celebration.
RICH, COMFORTING FLAVOURS
The Braised Superior Shark’s Fin Soup with Sea Cucumber and Fish
Maw followed, a dish that radiated opulence. Each spoonful was a
luxurious blend of textures and flavours, from the delicate layers of
shark fin to the chewy richness of sea cucumber and fish maw. The
crowning touch was the generous sprinkle of flying fish roe, adding
bursts of crunch to this velvety broth—a dish that truly warms both
the body and soul.

SIGNATURE HIGHLIGHTS
One of the most anticipated dishes was the Roasted Crispy Pigeon, a
Hong Kong delicacy rarely seen in KL. Its golden, glossy skin glistened
under the lights, offering a thin, buttery crunch with every bite. The
meat was tender and flavourful, with a rich, gamey profile that struck a
perfect balance between roast duck and liver.
Equally impressive were the Oven Baked Iberico Pork Ribs, which
demonstrated the art of simplicity. Seasoned with just salt and pepper,
the ribs were sinfully tender, allowing the natural flavour of the Iberico
pork to shine. Served alongside a light salad of bell peppers, cherry
tomatoes, and mayonnaise, this dish was a testament to the philosophy
of letting quality ingredients speak for themselves. Pro tip: For those
who enjoy a little kick, the in-house chili dipping sauce is a must-try—it
elevates the already stellar ribs to new heights.
FUSION PERFECTION
Next came the Baked Fresh Water Prawn in Butter Sauce, a dish that
epitomises fusion cuisine. The butterflied prawn was succulent and
fresh, with a dollop of velvety butter sauce accentuating its sweetness.
Beneath it lay a pool of lightly spiced curry sauce, further enhanced by
crispy fried curry leaves. Each bite was an explosion of flavours that
married tradition and innovation seamlessly.

Accompanied by a separate platter of waxed meats flown in from
China, including cured duck, liver sausage, and air-dried pork belly, this
dish was a showcase of heritage and craftsmanship. The combination
of smoky, sweet, and savoury notes was nothing short of sublime.

ENDING ON A SWEET NOTE
Dessert was a delightful affair. The Longan with Lemon Grass Jelly
offered a refreshing close to the meal, with its light citrus notes and
juicy longan pieces acting as a palate cleanser. Meanwhile, the Deep-
Fried “Nian Gao” with Yam and Sweet Potato brought the celebration
full circle. Symbolising progress and improvement, this layered dessert
featured a crispy exterior and a soft, sweet filling—a perfect balance of
textures and flavours.
A SPACE FOR EVERY OCCASION
With its seven private rooms and a total capacity of 130 guests, Chinese
Palace caters to both intimate gatherings and grand celebrations. The
largest private room, equipped with a karaoke system, adds an extra

Here is a list of 8 lucky fruits
and flowers to brighten your
Chinese New Year
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
When it comes to Chinese New Year, it’s not just about the food—your choice of fruits and
flowers plays a major role in bringing good fortune, happiness, and prosperity into your home.
These vibrant and meaningful decorations don’t just look good; they symbolise everything
from wealth to romance. Here are eight lucky fruits and flowers to embrace this Lunar New
Year and their significance.
NARCISSUS – A DELICATE BLOOM OF FORTUNE
The narcissus, also known as the water fairy flower, exudes charm and elegance. These
fragrant blooms are believed to bring good fortune and prosperity. Easy to care for, they
thrive in shallow dishes of water and pebbles, making them a lovely and practical addition to
your home decorations.
TANGERINE OR KUMQUAT TREES – A HARVEST OF WEALTH AND LUCK
Imagine a cheerful kumquat tree standing proudly in your living room, its golden fruit gleaming
like miniature treasures. These trees are hugely popular, especially in southern regions like
Hong Kong and Guangdong, where their name in Cantonese and Mandarin sounds like the
word for "good luck." Symbolising wealth and prosperity, kumquat trees are a must-have for
those looking to start the year on a high note.
LUCKY BAMBOO – TWISTS OF STRENGTH
Lucky bamboo is more than just a houseplant; it’s a Chinese symbol of strength and resilience.
Its stems are often twisted into intricate shapes and adorned with red ribbons for extra
auspiciousness. Bring one home for a touch of greenery and a dose of good vibes.

PUSSY WILLOWS – A BUDDING SYMBOL OF GROWTH
Pussy willows, with their silky, delicate buds, are a visual promise of new beginnings. Their
fresh green shoots signify growth and prosperity, making them a perfect decoration to
welcome a year full of promise. Place a bunch in a vase, and watch them brighten your space
with their understated elegance.
ORCHIDS – BLOSSOMS OF ABUNDANCE AND ELEGANCE
Orchids are the quintessential flower of Chinese New Year. Symbolising fertility, abundance,
and refinement, these stunning blooms are available in every colour and variety imaginable.
Perfect as a gift or a decoration, orchids bring luxury and a sense of calm to any space.
PLUM BLOSSOMS – THE COURAGE TO ENDURE
Bold and bright, plum blossoms stand as a symbol of endurance and perseverance. Their
appearance during the chilly winter months reflects their resilience, making them a beloved
sight in parks and homes alike. In Chinese culture, these blossoms represent strength, reliability,
and the courage to thrive against the odds.

beauty. Red peonies, in particular, are considered especially auspicious, symbolising wealth,
peace, and affection. Their elegance makes them an ideal centrepiece for any Chinese New
Year celebration.
PEACH BLOSSOMS – ROMANCE IN BLOOM
Single and ready to mingle? Peach blossoms are for you! These delicate pink flowers symbolise
love, prosperity, and personal growth, making them popular among young singles seeking
romance. Sacred in Chinese culture, the peach tree also represents longevity, adding an extra
layer of significance to its beauty.
BRINGING LUCK HOME
Whether you’re adorning your space with a cheerful kumquat tree or gifting a bouquet of
orchids to loved ones, these lucky fruits and flowers are a fantastic way to embrace the spirit
of Chinese New Year. Their meanings run deeper than their beauty, filling your home with
prosperity, peace, and a touch of romance for the year ahead.
So, why not start this Lunar New Year with a bit of natural charm? After all, every bloom and
fruit carries the promise of a fresh start and the luck to match.
