SWEET
NOSTALGIA
Traditional childhood games that will
bring the Malaysian spirit to life –
You’ll love #4!
Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures, and along with its diverse heritage comes an
array of traditional childhood games that many of us grew up playing. These games
were the backbone of our childhoods, filled with laughter, friendly competition,
and the occasional argument over who actually won. But with the rise of mobile
games and high-tech entertainment, these classic pastimes are at risk of fading
into obscurity.
Let’s take a walk down memory lane and revisit seven traditional Malaysian childhood
games that deserve to be cherished and passed on to the next generation.
WAU – TRADITIONAL KITE FLYING
Flying wau (traditional kites) wasn’t just a game—it was an art. In the rural areas
of Malaysia, kite-flying was (and still is) a beloved pastime, especially after the
harvest season when the skies would be filled with vibrant, intricate kites soaring
high above the fields. Competitions ranged from seeing which kite could fly the
highest to judging the most beautifully decorated kite.
BATU SEREMBAN – BEFORE GONGGI
Ah, Batu Seremban, or five stones—the game that tested our dexterity and reflexes
long before fidget spinners existed. Traditionally played using small pebbles or
bean-filled cloth bags, this game involves tossing and catching the pieces in
various sequences. Each round increases in difficulty, and only the most skillful
players could complete all the steps without fumbling.
48
MARCH/APRIL 2025 THRIVE
CONGKAK – MATH MADE FUN
This game consists of a beautifully carved wooden board with
multiple hollows, filled with small marbles or seeds. Congkak is one
of the most iconic traditional games in the country. Originating from
the Malay word congak (meaning “mental arithmetic”), this game is
about moving your pieces around the board in a calculated manner
while trying to outsmart your opponent.
Clockwise from left:
Congkak; Batu Seremban;
Gasing and Guli
GASING – THE ORIGINAL SPINNING TOP
Before spinning tops became a global phenomenon with Beyblade,
Malaysian kids were already battling it out with their own wooden
tops—better known as gasing. This game requires strength,
precision, and a solid throwing technique with competitions focused
on either the longest-spinning gasing or players aggressively trying
to knock their opponent’s top out of the ring.
GULI – DON’T LOSE YOUR MARBLES
Guli (or marbles) was the game that determined the playground
champions. Armed with a collection of beautifully coloured glass
marbles, players would take turns flicking their own marble at
others in an attempt to knock them out of a drawn circle. The best
part? Winners got to keep the marbles they knocked out, leading to
some serious high-stakes matches.
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
49
BOTTLE CAPS – STACK ‘EM OR LOSE ‘EM
Ceper, also known as bottle caps, was one of those games that
seemed easy but required serious skill. Players would balance a
stack of five metal bottle caps on their hand, toss them into the air,
and try to catch as many as possible on the back of their hand. The
more caps you caught, the more points you earned, and the game
continued until someone reached the target score.
LET’S NOT FORGET
With smartphones and gaming consoles dominating childhoods
today, these traditional games are at risk of being forgotten.
However, efforts are being made to preserve them—heritage
festivals, cultural organisations, and even digital adaptations have
helped keep the spirit of these games alive.
But at the end of the day, nothing beats the real thing. So, parents,
dust off that congkak board, grab some marbles, and show your
kids the joy of playing games that require nothing more than skill,
wit, and a little friendly competition. Because some traditions?
They’re simply too good to let go.

ATILIA
A Beautiful Havoc of Passion,
Purpose, and Empowerment
Life has a way of leading us down unexpected paths, and for Atilia Haron,
every twist and turn has been a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and
inspiration. The singer, actress, yoga instructor, and entrepreneur wears
many hats, but at the core of it all, she is a woman who embraces every
moment with grace, gratitude, and an unwavering sense of purpose.
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
Atilia's foray into yoga was born out of necessity rather than curiosity.
Once a self-proclaimed junk food lover with erratic sleeping habits,
she found herself struggling with her breathing during performances.
Realising she needed a change, she explored various fitness routines,
from running to swimming, but none quite fit. It was yoga, a practice she
initially thought would be easy, that challenged her in ways she never
imagined. More than two decades later, yoga is now her sanctuary, her
passion, and her gift to others.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO A FLOURISHING
YOGA COMMUNITY
What started as casual yoga sessions at home with
friends quickly evolved into something much bigger.
As her home became too crowded, she rented a small
space and began hiring instructors, only to realise that
it was unsustainable financially. Determined to make
her passion a sustainable profession, she pursued a
200-hour teaching certification. Within a month of
returning to Malaysia, she was teaching, and thus,
Hippie Hub Studio (HHS) was born.
HHS is more than just a yoga studio; it’s a safe haven.
Known for its warm and inclusive atmosphere, it
welcomes everyone, from seasoned yogis to complete
beginners who may spend the entire class in a child’s
pose. Atilia ensures that yoga remains accessible to
all, conducting free community classes (which she
refers to as Karma classes) every Saturday at KLCC
Park—a heartfelt gesture that speaks volumes about
her commitment to giving back.
BALANCING ACT: INSTRUCTOR, BUSINESSWOMAN,
AND PERFORMER
With a career that spans music, acting, and
entrepreneurship, Atilia’s life is a carefully
orchestrated balance of discipline, passion, and, of
course, power naps. A self-proclaimed “professional
napper,” she squeezes in rest whenever she can,
knowing that managing her energy is key to
sustaining her dynamic lifestyle.

Teaching yoga isn’t just a business for her—it’s a
calling. The joy she feels when students share how
their strength and flexibility have improved, or when
an elderly woman tells her she can now pray more
comfortably, fuels her passion even further. Her love for
Ashtanga yoga, with its discipline and perseverance,
mirrors her own journey—one that constantly evolves
but remains rooted in purpose.
Atilia has never strayed

A STAR WITH A PURPOSE
Despite her thriving yoga career, Atilia has never
strayed from the spotlight. Whether it was singing
Negaraku at Formula 1 in front of a worldwide
audience or performing in P. Ramlee the Musical to
thunderous applause, she treasures every moment
of her artistic journey. Her ability to connect with
people—on stage or on the yoga mat—remains one of
her greatest strengths.
Beyond her career, she is deeply passionate about
advocacy, particularly in breast cancer awareness.
Having witnessed her mother’s battle with cancer and
facing her own health scares, Atilia is a fierce supporter
of early detection and awareness. Her involvement
extends beyond social media, as she actively
participates in events, podcasts, and hospital visits.
The children she met in cancer wards, their innocent
joy despite their struggles, left an indelible mark on
her heart and reinforced her commitment to making
a difference.
EMPOWERED AND EMPOWERING
For Atilia, empowerment means making her own
choices while being surrounded by a supportive
community. Though she naturally leans towards
people-pleasing, standing her ground and asserting
herself is a personal victory that fuels her sense of
empowerment. She believes that women should uplift
one another, seeing each other as sources of inspiration
rather than competition.
Her philosophy on life? Never put off till tomorrow what
can be done today. Proper planning, focus, and a clear
vision keep her grounded. She draws strength from
the incredible women around her, using their resilience
and drive as motivation to keep pushing forward.

A CELEBRATION OF WOMANHOOD
For Atilia, celebrating womanhood is about embracing her

the inside radiates outward. Despite her many roles, she
has never faced gender discrimination in her industries, a
testament to the progress in equal rights within Malaysia.
Her advice to women? Don’t be envious—be inspired.
Learn from one another, support each other, and
empower each other to be better every day.
through yoga, offering even more free classes to the

of still being on the mat, guiding others on their

A LIFE OF BEAUTIFUL HAVOC
When asked to describe her life in one word, Atilia

SAFE
&
SOUND
The ultimate guide to a
safe and stress-free Balik
Kampung journey
Balik Kampung season is upon us, and as many hit the
road or take to the skies to reunite with loved ones,
ensuring a safe and smooth journey should be at the top
of your checklist. Whether you're driving long distances
or catching a flight, a little preparation goes a long way in
avoiding unnecessary stress and delays.
CAR MAINTENANCE
A well-maintained car significantly reduces the risk of
breakdowns on the highway. If your service is due soon,
take it in early and let your mechanic know you’ll be driving
long distances. Ensure key components such as your tyres,
brakes, engine oil, car battery and air conditioner are in
top condition. You may even check that the windscreen
wipers, car lights, car insurance and road tax and other
emergency essentials are in good working order.
EARLY PREP
For those travelling with children, preparation is key
to a smooth journey. Be sure to pack some snacks
and nourishment, water or milk bottles, fully charged
electronic devices and portable chargers, non-digital
entertainment like books or toys as well as a change of
clothes and cleaning supplies in case of spills or accidents.
Do also take into account travel time and factor in stops
for meals, toilet breaks, prayers, and nappy changes to
avoid unnecessary stress.
74
MARCH/APRIL 2025 TIPS
REST IS BEST
Driver fatigue is a major risk, so ensure you are well-rested before
setting out on a long drive. Avoid driving when drowsy and make
rest stops when needed. Stop at designated areas to stretch,
grab coffee, take a power nap, or switch drivers if possible. A
great tip is to have someone in the co-driver seat to keep you
engaged in conversation and alert throughout the journey.
LITTER BUG
This should go without saying, but littering is both hazardous
and irresponsible. The trash you throw out the window could
pose a danger to others on the road. Keep a trash bag in the
car and dispose of waste properly at designated stops.
TOO COOL TO CARPOOL?
If you have friends or family heading to the same hometown,
carpooling is a great way to reduce travel costs, ease
congestion, and have a co-driver for shared driving duties. It
also makes for a more enjoyable and lively journey.
TAKE TO THE SKIES
If you’re flying home, be at the airport at least three hours
before departure to ensure a hassle-free check-in and
boarding process. Consider the time needed to travel to the
airport, accounting for possible traffic delays. Self-check-in
via your airline’s app, website, or airport kiosks can help save
time and streamline your experience.
CONGESTED HOTSPOTS
If you're heading to busy states like Melaka, Johor, or Penang,
expect not just road congestion but also crowded town
centres and tourist hotspots. Plan any sightseeing or visits in
advance, keeping in mind that school holidays often coincide
with this travel period, making public places even busier.
A smooth balik kampung journey is all about preparation,
patience, and common sense. Travel safely, enjoy the festivities,
and cherish the precious moments with your loved ones.
TOP IT UP
Toll fares are often waived for two days during festive periods,
but if you’re travelling earlier or later, make sure your Touch ’n
Go card has enough balance. Since top-up lanes at toll booths
were removed in 2019, you must reload your card beforehand
to avoid any delays.
AVOID PEAK HOURS
Traffic congestion is inevitable during festive seasons. To avoid
long delays, consider leaving during off-peak hours. If you can
manage an early morning start as early as 3am as you’ll likely
experience much smoother traffic conditions.
ROAD ADVISORIES
Stay informed about road conditions by following useful
accounts such as PLUS Malaysia Berhad, Kementerian Kerja
Raya, Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia and Astro Radio Traffic
or use navigation apps like Waze or Google Maps to check
traffic conditions, roadblocks, and speed limits before and
during your journey.

From Disney star to

story behind Sabrina
Carpentar's rise to fame!
If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Sabrina Carpenter, it’s that
she’s not just another former Disney star—she’s a full-blown, chartsmashing,
history-making sensation. From her days of cracking jokes
and winning hearts on Girl Meets World to topping global charts with

"NONSENSE"
FROM SMALL SCREENS TO STADIUM STAGES
Like many pop princesses before her, Sabrina got her start in the magical
world of Disney. As Maya Hart on Girl Meets World (2014–2017), she
played the sassy, quick-witted best friend—a role that came with a builtin
audience of tweens who adored her rebellious charm. But while other
Disney stars faded into nostalgia, Sabrina had bigger plans.

Her music career took flight in 2014 with the release
of Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying (co-written by Meghan
Trainor, no less). It was a sweet, acoustic pop gem that
gave us a taste of what was to come. Over the next few
years, she built an impressive discography with Eyes Wide
Open (2015), Evolution (2016), and the Singular series
(2018–2019), proving she was far more than just another
actress-turned-singer.
BREAKING RECORDS & WINNING HEARTS
In 2021, Sabrina made a career-defining move, signing with
Island Records and releasing Emails I Can’t Send (2022).
The album gave us viral bops like Nonsense and Feather—
one a cheeky, TikTok-fueled anthem and the other a radio
juggernaut that soared to No. 1 on the Pop Airplay charts.
She even opened for The Eras Tour, fulfilling a childhood
dream of sharing the stage with Taylor Swift. Casual.
And just when you thought she couldn’t top herself, along
came Short n’ Sweet (2024), an album so successful it
rewrote the rulebook. With tracks like Espresso, Please
Please Please, and Taste, she dominated the charts,
became the first woman to hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots
on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks straight, and
scored six Grammy nominations, taking home two. Oh,
and she also became the first artist in 71 years to spend
20 weeks atop the UK singles chart in a calendar year. No
big deal.

BEYOND THE MUSIC
While music is her primary playground, Sabrina’s acting career is
still going strong. From The Hate U Give to Tall Girl and Work It
(which she also executive produced), she’s continued flexing her
on-screen talents. She even made her Broadway debut in Mean
Girls (2020)—talk about range!
And because she loves a good festive moment, she wrapped up
2024 with A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter, a Netflix
holiday special featuring guest appearances from Shania Twain,
Tyla, and Chappell Roan. If there were an award for Most Likely to
Spread Holiday Cheer, she’d win that too.
THE FUTURE IS SWEET
Sabrina Carpenter has officially entered her pop superstar era, and by
the looks of it, she’s just getting started. With a deluxe edition of Short
n’ Sweet on the way, an arena tour in full swing, and the world at her
feet, she’s proving that sometimes, you can have it all.
As she once cheekily reminded us, “Jesus was a carpenter.” And as
far as we’re concerned, this Carpenter is a legend in the making.

Space Station—the BR-03 Astro transforms timekeeping into an
interstellar experience. Its dial mimics the orbits of the Moon
and Mars around Earth, reimagining the traditional way of telling
time. Instead of classic hands, Mars marks the hours, the Moon
tracks the minutes, and a small satellite orbits Earth every 60
seconds, bringing the watch to life.
DESIGN THAT DEFIES GRAVITY
With its deep black ceramic case and a blue aventurine dial
that shimmers like a star-studded sky, the BR-03 Astro is a
work of art as much as a feat of engineering. A spherical cap
sapphire crystal magnifies the Earth in relief, adding depth
and realism to the design. Precision remains at the core of
this timepiece, powered by the Swiss automatic mechanical
movement BR.CAL-327, offering a 54-hour power reserve.
A TRIBUTE TO SPACE EXPLORATION
More than just a watch, the BR-03 Astro is a collector’s piece
for those captivated by the mysteries of the universe. Whether
you’re an astronomy enthusiast, a space dreamer, or simply
someone who appreciates fine craftsmanship, this timepiece
is an invitation to explore the cosmos—one second at a time.
Taking inspiration from the skies and by the Cupola, the observation dome of the International Space Station, the BR-03 Astro
transforms timekeeping into an interstellar experience

Holistic Solutions for Women
with Endometriosis
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

It may start as seemingly harmless pelvic pain, period cramps,
or discomfort during bowel movements. For many women, these
symptoms are dismissed as “typical menstrual discomfort”—a
monthly inconvenience to endure. But what happens when that
discomfort becomes unbearable, disrupting daily routines, work
deadlines, and social plans? For 1 in 10 women worldwide, this is the
reality of endometriosis—a chronic condition that doesn’t just cause
pain but also steals precious time, opportunities, and joy.
Globally, endometriosis affects an estimated 190 million women,
and in Malaysia, over 300,000 women are believed to be living
with this condition. However, the true number is likely much higher,
concealed by underdiagnosis and the stigma surrounding menstrual
health. Despite its prevalence, endometriosis remains a hushed
conversation, leaving many to endure their pain in isolation.
HOLISTIC ENDOMETRIOSIS CARE WORKSHOP MARKS A NEW
CHAPTER IN WOMEN’S HEALTH
Envision a place where women no longer face their struggles
alone—where expert care and genuine support pave the way for
healing and hope. That vision became a reality with the launch of
Endo Care @ Thomson. Marking this milestone was the Holistic
Endometriosis Care Workshop, a collaborative event with MyEndosis
(Endometriosis Association of Malaysia). Held on February 8, 2025,
at Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara, the event brought together
women, healthcare professionals, and advocates to give a voice to
those who have long suffered in silence.
From left to right: Mrs Evodie
Paul, Physiotherapist - MS

Katarina Olid, Women’s
Health Physiotherapist; Prof
Dr Prasanna Supramaniam,
Consultant Gynaecologist
and Endometriosis Surgeon;
Ms Lakshmi Menon, CEO of
Thomson Fertility; Mrs Surita
Mogan, President of MyEndosis
The workshop began with insightful talks from a distinguished
panel of specialists, including Prof. Dr. Prasanna Supramaniam, a
consultant gynaecologist and endometriosis surgeon, Dr. Khairun
Marina, a fertility specialist, and Dato’ Dr. Hamzah, a consultant
cardiothoracic surgeon.
While endometriosis is commonly associated with reproductive
challenges, its impact can extend far beyond. In some cases, it
104

invades organs like the lungs and diaphragm, leading to
sudden lung collapse, internal bleeding, and severe breathing
difficulties. This condition, known as Thoracic Endometriosis
Syndrome (TES), is often misdiagnosed, leaving many
women to endure their pain in silence.
Dato’ Dr. Hamzah highlighted the critical need for early
diagnosis and a tailored approach: “Endometriosis isn’t
just a gynecological issue—it’s a systemic condition that
demands a multidisciplinary response. With minimally
invasive surgery and post-operative hormonal therapy, we
can prevent recurrence and significantly improve quality of
life. Early intervention is key to ending unnecessary suffering
and giving women the care, they deserve.”
EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH KNOWLEDGE AND
CONNECTION
The breakout sessions were equally impactful, offering
attendees expert guidance, emotional support, and
practical tools in a well-rounded experience. Through
intimate conversations with specialists, participants had
the opportunity to ask questions and receive personalised
advice tailored to their unique challenges. Meanwhile, the
Sisterhood Circle, led by Mrs. Surita Mogan, President of
MyEndosis Club, provided a safe and nurturing space for
women to share their stories, express their pain, and connect
with others who truly understand their struggles. This sense
of community and solidarity served as a powerful reminder
that they are not alone in their journey.
The session took a hands-on turn as the skilled
physiotherapists, Mrs. Dina Katarina Olid and Mrs. Evodie
Paul demonstrated a series of exercises specifically designed
to alleviate pelvic pain and improve mobility for women with
endometriosis. Participants were then invited to try these
exercises themselves, with the physiotherapists offering
personalized guidance. This interactive approach allowed
attendees to not only learn the exercises but also practice
them correctly under expert supervision. By the end of the
session, participants left feeling empowered, equipped with
practical tools to take control of their pain and improve their
quality of life.
ENDO CARE @ THOMSON: A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CARE
Recognising the need for greater awareness and education
about endometriosis, Endo Care @ Thomson was established
as a dedicated space for specialised care. Inspired by the
renowned Oxford Endometriosis Centre, it aspires to become
a leading referral hub for endometriosis treatment in Malaysia.
Oxford-trained Prof. Dr. Prasanna Supramaniam emphasised the
initiative’s multidisciplinary, patient-centric approach, stating:
“Endometriosis is a complex condition that requires a holistic
and tailored approach. Through Endo Care @ Thomson, we
ensure women receive the right diagnosis and care plan,
improving their overall well-being and fertility outcomes.”
The initiative offers:
• Advanced diagnostics for accurate detection.
• Comprehensive treatment options, including medical,
surgical, and fertility-related interventions.
• Multidisciplinary expertise, with collaboration from urologists,
colorectal surgeons, and cardiothoracic surgeons.
• Pelvic pain management, featuring personalised

Endometriosis is a multifaceted condition that often requires
more than just gynecological care. It can affect multiple
systems in the body, including the urinary tract, bowels,
and even the thoracic cavity. This is why a multidisciplinary
approach is critical. By bringing together experts from various
fields, Endo Care @ Thomson ensures that every aspect of a
woman’s health is addressed, providing comprehensive and
personalised care.
Lakshmi Menon, CEO of Thomson Fertility, highlighted
this commitment: “At Thomson Fertility, we are dedicated

The Cutest AI
Companions
of 2025
Forget the dystopian sci-fi where robots take over the world—2025
is all about adorable, AI-powered companions designed to make
life easier, cosier, and a whole lot cuter. These AI buddies won’t just
fetch your coffee (although some might); they’ll keep you company,
entertain your kids, and maybe even give your cat a run for its money
in the affection department.
Here’s a look at five of the most charming AI companions set to steal
hearts (and possibly your sofa space) this year.
Ai Me – The Owl That Sees and Knows Everything (But Won’t Judge You)
Imagine having a tiny, wise owl in your home—not the kind that hoots
judgmentally while you binge-watch reality TV, but one that actually
helps you out. That’s Ai Me, TCL’s adorable AI robot designed to
integrate seamlessly into family life.
With its expressive digital eyes and soft, childlike voice, Ai Me doesn’t
just sit pretty—it records memories, responds to voice commands,
and even acts as a home security guard. It can link up with TCL’s
smart glasses to provide augmented reality notifications, making it
the perfect mix of high-tech wizardry and Hootie the Owl charm.

metaAnimal Series – The Fur-Free, Zero-Maintenance Pet Revolution
Want a pet but allergic to fur? Too busy to scoop litter? Elephant
Robotics has the answer: metaAnimals, a range of AI-driven robotic
pets so lifelike, they might just fool your grandma.
From metaCat, which purrs and meows like the real thing, to
metaPanda, which gives you a hug (yes, really!), these robots use AI
to learn your habits and respond just like a living pet would—minus
the fur on your sofa.
Most likely to: Make real cats jealous and force them to step up their
affection game.
Optimus – The Robot That Might Steal Your Job (Or At Least Your Chores)
Meet Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot designed to handle all the
boring, repetitive tasks you’d rather not do. Need someone to fold
laundry? Optimus is on it. Dreading the mountain of dishes in the
sink? No problem.
At 5 feet 8 inches tall, this sleek, futuristic robot moves just like a
human—but without the back pain complaints. And while Elon Musk
envisions Optimus revolutionising the workplace, we all know the real
dream is having it handle the endless cycle of house chores while we
focus on, well, literally anything else.
Most likely to: Be the reason your flat finally looks presentable when
guests come over.

Aria – The AI Companion That Actually Remembers Your Name
If Aria were a person, she’d be that effortlessly charming,
emotionally intelligent friend who always remembers your
birthday (and actually texts you about it). Created by Realbotix,
Aria is a hyper-realistic AI companion designed to engage in
meaningful conversations and adapt to your personality.
With 17 facial motors, she can blink, smile, and even give you a

for the fourth time this week. Customisable in appearance and
personality, Aria is proof that AI companions are getting eerily
close to feeling like real people.
Most likely to: Listen to your rants about work without

Q9 Self-Driving Home Hub – The Roaming Butler of the Future
LG’s Q9 Self-Driving Home Hub is basically your smart
home on wheels. This adorable little bot glides around your
house, making sure your lights are off, reminding you about
appointments, and probably judging your snack choices
(silently, of course).
Using AI-powered sensors, it recognises faces, learns
household routines, and even tells bedtime stories to kids.
The best part? It can create interactive games, making it
the ultimate tech babysitter when you need five minutes
of peace.
Most likely to: Become the unexpected favourite child in
your household.
The Future is Cute, Smart, and Ready to Help
As AI continues to evolve, so do the ways in which we interact
with technology. These robots aren’t just machines; they’re
companions, helpers, and, in some cases, emotional support
systems with a digital twist.
Will they replace human connection? Not a chance. But will
they remind you to drink water, clean your house, and keep
you entertained? Absolutely.
So, which AI companion are you adopting first?

Electric vs Hybrid:
The ultimate
showdown – which
ride will rule your
road in 2025?
Two leading
contenders
in the realm
of electrified
mobility—electric
vehicles (EVs)
and hybrid cars
118
MARCH/APRIL 2025 THROTTLE
The evolution of automotive technology has brought with it an
ever-expanding range of choices, particularly with the rise of
electrification. For consumers, this represents an exciting but
complex decision-making process. Where once the focus was
on engine size and fuel efficiency, today’s buyers must navigate
considerations such as battery capacity, charging infrastructure,
and electric motor performance.
With a great variety in EV
cars and Hybrid vehicles,
choose one that best suits
your lifestyle and budget
Two leading contenders in the realm of electrified mobility—electric
vehicles (EVs) and hybrid cars—each present unique advantages.
Their suitability depends largely on individual driving habits, lifestyle,
and infrastructure accessibility. Understanding these differences is
crucial to making an informed choice.
THE APPEAL OF HYBRID CARS
Hybrid vehicles are often regarded as the ideal bridge between
traditional internal combustion engines and full electrification. By
integrating a petrol or diesel engine with one or more electric motors,
hybrids offer a balanced blend of fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and
practical usability. The electric motor assists in propulsion, recaptures
energy through regenerative braking, and, in some cases, enables
short bursts of electric-only driving.
120
MARCH/APRIL 2025 THROTTLE
Most hybrids primarily rely on their internal combustion engine,
using the electric motor as a supplement rather than a standalone
power source. This allows them to achieve better fuel economy while
maintaining the convenience of conventional refuelling. Furthermore,
because hybrid batteries are smaller than those in EVs, their
environmental impact during production is lower. However, they still
depend on fossil fuels, which limits their sustainability compared to
fully electric alternatives.
A notable variation within this category is the plug-in hybrid electric
vehicle (PHEV). These models feature a larger battery capacity and
an external charging port, enabling extended electric-only driving
before the internal combustion engine is required. PHEVs provide
an attractive compromise for those who wish to experience electric
driving while retaining the reassurance of a traditional engine for
longer journeys.
THE CASE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES (EVS)
Electric vehicles, or battery-electric vehicles represent the pinnacle
of zero-emission driving. Powered exclusively by batteries, EVs
must be recharged via an external power source. By eliminating the
internal combustion engine, they offer a cleaner, quieter, and often
more exhilarating driving experience.
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
121
Many vehicle brands
have luxurious modern
and futuristic concept
cars that could be the
vehicles of tomorrow
122
MARCH/APRIL 2025 THROTTLE
The primary environmental benefit of EVs is their total
absence of tailpipe emissions. Additionally, they significantly
reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions, although the
sustainability of an EV is influenced by the source of the
electricity used for charging. If powered by renewable
sources such as wind, solar, or hydroelectric energy, EVs
become an even more environmentally conscious choice.
Furthermore, as global electricity grids continue to
transition towards greener energy, EVs inherently become
more sustainable over time.
From a technical perspective, EVs have fewer moving parts
compared to conventional vehicles, translating into lower
maintenance requirements. Their instant torque delivery
ensures brisk acceleration, making them not only efficient
but also highly responsive. Additionally, their near-silent
operation and smooth ride contribute to a refined and
premium driving experience.
That said, EVs are not without challenges. Their battery
packs are significantly larger and heavier than those of
hybrids, which can impact vehicle weight distribution and
road wear. Moreover, EV owners do not currently contribute
to road maintenance through fuel taxes, a consideration
that may influence future policy changes. Another concern
is battery longevity and replacement costs; however, most
manufacturers offer warranties of at least eight years or
100,000 miles, with some extending even further.
The environmental implications of battery production also
merit attention. The extraction of raw materials such as
lithium, cobalt, and nickel involves resource-intensive mining
practices. Nevertheless, advances in battery recycling and
alternative materials are steadily improving the sustainability
of EV production.
WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
For those intrigued by the prospect of electric driving but hesitant
to go all-in, hybrids—particularly PHEVs—offer an excellent
transitional option. They provide the flexibility of a conventional
fuel engine while enabling drivers to embrace electric power for
shorter commutes. This is particularly beneficial for individuals
without easy access to charging infrastructure or those who
frequently undertake long-distance journeys.
Conversely, for those prepared to commit to full electrification,
the expanding selection of EVs caters to both efficiencyconscious
and performance-driven buyers. While navigating
this shift can feel overwhelming, the continuous advancements
in charging networks and battery technology ensure that the
future of electric mobility is more accessible than ever.
As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, the decision
between a hybrid and an electric vehicle ultimately hinges on
individual needs, lifestyle, and environmental priorities. With
an array of compelling options available, there has never been
a better time to explore the possibilities of electrified driving.

Raya!
Light up your home for
Eid with these sustainable
decoration ideas – you won’t
believe how easy #2 is!
As the holy month of Ramadan unfolds, excitement for Hari Raya Aidilfitri begins
to build. This joyous celebration is a time for family gatherings, heartfelt reunions,
and, of course, giving your home a festive makeover! Whether you prefer classic
elegance or a modern touch, these decorating ideas will fill your space with warmth
and charm, ensuring your home is Raya-ready.
A SPARKLE OF TRADITION
The crescent moon and stars have long been cherished symbols of Eid, representing
hope and blessings. Incorporate these celestial touches into your decor with
shimmering gold and silver accents. Whether it’s hanging fairy lights in crescent
shapes, placing star-themed centre-pieces on tables, or adding intricate lanterns,
these elements will bring a soft and festive glow to your home. For a modern twist,
contrast traditional motifs with bold colours such as deep emerald, ruby red, or navy
blue for an effortlessly stylish look.
DRESS UP YOUR WALLS WITH CULTURAL CHARM
Celebrate your heritage by adorning your walls with art that reflects Islamic culture
and tradition. Batik hangings, calligraphy prints, or intricate geometric patterns add
depth and meaning to your space. Frame these pieces for a sophisticated touch, or
opt for temporary wall decals if you prefer something that can be easily changed
after the festivities. These decorative additions not only enhance the aesthetic of
your home but also serve as meaningful conversation starters for guests.

GO GREEN FOR A REFRESHING ATMOSPHERE
Green is the colour of prosperity and renewal, making it the perfect shade to embrace during
Eid. You can introduce green accents through table runners, cushion covers, and curtains to give
your space a refreshing, lively feel. For a sustainable touch, consider upcycling old baju Raya
into unique home accessories. Repurpose them into cushion covers or ketupat-inspired woven
placemats, infusing your home with a nostalgic yet innovative charm. Fresh potted plants also
add vibrancy and freshness, bringing a little bit of nature indoors.

CREATIVE KETUPAT CRAFTING
No Hari Raya celebration is complete without the presence of ketupat, the woven rice dumpling
that symbolises unity and tradition. Why not take it a step further by crafting ketupat decorations?
If you’re handy with paper quilting, create mini ketupat ornaments to hang around the house.
You can also use colourful ribbons to weave larger decorative ketupat that can be placed on
tables or even hung as a garland along staircases and walls. This charming DIY project is a fun
activity to do with family and children.

A GLOW OF WARMTH WITH LIGHT AND LANTERNS
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood for festive
celebrations. Traditionally, homes were illuminated with ‘lampu
pelita’ (oil lamps), but modern homes can achieve a similar warm
glow with safer alternatives. Consider using battery-operated fairy
lights, Moroccan-style lanterns, or even DIY candle holders made
from repurposed glass jars. Decorate them with intricate patterns
and metallic hues to create a magical, enchanting atmosphere.
A HOME FULL OF JOY AND CELEBRATION
Hari Raya is more than just a celebration—it’s a time to create
cherished memories with loved ones. As you decorate your home, let
the process be filled with laughter, love, and creativity. Whether it’s
through traditional touches, contemporary designs, or sustainable
upcycling, the key is to create a space that feels inviting and joyful
for family and guests alike.
May your home be filled with warmth, light, and happiness this Hari
Raya. Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri to all celebrating!
