Description :

Jews have often avoided the subject of Jesus for many reasons including the

history of Christian anti-Semitism, the focus on distinctly Jewish practices and

concerns, and the idea that Judaism and Christianity are different religions,

just to name a few. However, the time may have come to look again at the

Jewish roots of the Sermon on the Mount&#8212th statements of Jesus which

reflect many commonalities between Judaism and Christianity. Revealing that

many of the words of Jesus are the same as those said by other Jews might

shock both Jews and Christians. Yet, the recognition of common roots might

also build a bridge between Jews and Christians.A memory is precious but

fragile. Any attempt to reexamine it is fraught with difficulties. Reaching out

and touching it can destroy it, just like an outstretched hand touching a

reflection in a pool of water. Doing so sends ripples far beyond the point of

impact. What does the memory or, rather, the image of Jesus stir within Jewish

consciousness? For many, it is a painful image. It brings to mind the afflictions

of past generations who have suffered at the hands of those who described

themselves as his most ardent followers. Others find the memory of Jesus

disturbing for a different reason. They believe he is the founder of a theological

system they find disconcertingly foreign and even offensive to Judaism yet

wrapped in the terms and identity known to Israel. If we dare stretch out our

hands to try to understand the negative memory that so many Jews espouse,

what might happen? For some, the adverse image, might be shattered.

However, an even more troubling one might emerge for others. The pieces

that are left, may no longer seem so foreign to Jews, but they might seem

strange to Christians. Some have argued that rabbinic Judaism and Christianity

developed as &#8220silings&#8221from the same womb. Nevertheless, we

have also had a sibling rivalry. In fact, one of the major themes in the Book of

Genesis is the natural rivalry between brothers. We humbly believe that

sharing the ideas that unite us is critical for both Jews and Christians.Todd

Rosenberg is a lawyer who now lives in Chicago. He has taught classes at the

Siegal Lifelong Learning division of Case Western Reserve University as well

as a number of synagogues. Mr. Rosenberg has studied extensively for the

last 25 years with a variety of rabbis and professors, and he has widely studied

both Jewish and Christian sources. This book is the first of many books

describing the similarities and differences between Judaism and Christianity

that he is in the process of writing and co-authoring.Juan Marcos Bejarano

Gutierrez is a graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas, where he earned a

degree in electrical engineering. He studied at the Siegal College of Judaic

Studies in Cleveland where he received a Master of Arts Degree in Judaic

Studies. He completed his doctoral studies at the Spertus Institute in Chicago

in 2015. He studied at the American Seminary for Contemporary Judaism and

received rabbinic ordination in 2011 from Yeshivat Mesilat Yesharim. He is an

author and the rabbi of Chavurah Zohar Yisrael in the Dallas area.
