Finding Strength in Words: María’s Rare Kidney

Disease Story

As a professional communicator,

words have always

come easily to María. That

is until the diagnosis of two

different rare kidney diseases

that left María speechless.

Many people know what

chronic kidney disease

(CKD) is, but few people

have heard of rare kidney

disease (RKD). María lives

with two different forms

of RKD: IgA nephropathy

(IgAN) and focal segmental

glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).

IgAN, one of the most

common forms of RKD,

causes inflammation in the

kidneys, damaging their

function over time. FSGS is

characterized by the development

of scarring in the

kidneys. Both can lead to

kidney failure in the prime

of life.

An estimated 60-80 per

100,000 people in the United

States currently live with

RKD. RKDs are often diagnosed

when people are

younger and can progress

faster than other forms

of kidney disease. In fact,

while people with RKD represent

less than 5-10% of

people with kidney disease,

those with RKD represent

upwards of 30% of those

with kidney failure. As a

result, people living with

RKD face unique challenges

navigating life with a rare

disease. Due to low public

awareness, people living

with RKD often struggle to

explain their condition to

others.

A Change to Daily Life

This was the case for

María, whose RKD caused

many changes to her life in

Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Prior

to her diagnoses in her

early 30s, María was quite

active, balancing a stressful

job while raising a family,

jumping to social activities,

and enjoying travel. But after

her diagnosis, she didn’t

feel well enough or have the

energy to keep up. This took

a mental and emotional toll.

She felt alone, misunderstood,

and worried. Would

her RKD cause kidney failure?

How could she be there

for her children and family?

Would she be a burden to

others?

appearance remained unchanged,

many people

around her did not understand

the impact that RKD

is a Fellow of the American College

of Surgeons, the largest surgical organization

in the world. The ACS has,

for more than one hundred years, set

What does FACS mean?

Earning the FACS designation involves

a rigorous application process,

verification of credentials, review of

a surgical case log, recommendations

by colleagues, and interviews conducted

by a panel of experts. These

steps ensure that surgeons meet and

uphold the highest standards of surgical

care and ethics.

By choosing a Fellow of the ACS,

you are selecting a surgeon who

meets and exceeds standard qualifications,

such as board certification.

The FACS designation is a higher bar.

in surgery, both past and

University surgeon Allen Whipple,

to perform a complex operation for

treating pancreatic cancer—a procedure

that bears his name today. Alton

Ochsner, MD, FACS, made the

first link between tobacco and lung

cancer—in 1939. Cardiac surgeon

Bartley P. Griffith, MD, FACS, performed

the first successful pig-to-human

heart transplant in the world in

of the College make it a point to stay

can provide their patients with the

Dog Grooming Advice to Keep Pets Clean

and Healthy

Regular grooming can keep your dog

looking and smelling his or her best, but

it’s also important for maintaining health.

If you choose to groom at home rather

than opting for (often expensive) professional

care, it’s also an opportunity to examine

your pet for potential concerns.

A proper grooming routine starts with

the right tools. Consider these suggestions

from The Humane Society of the

United States:

• Dog-friendly nail clippers

• Rubber-bristled brush

• Dog-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste

• Dog-friendly shampoo and conditioner

• Cotton balls

• Blunt-ended shears or small clippers

with guides

• Microfiber towel

Trimming Nails

When your dog’s nails nearly touch the

ground, it’s time for a trim, typically every

3-4 weeks. Trimming the part of the

nail that turns down helps prevent pain

and damage to paws.

If your dog has white nails, avoid cutting

the “quick,” the pink part that’s visible

on white nails, which bleeds when

cut. For dark nails, simply trim a bit at a

time until evidence of the quick is visible.

Bathing and Brushing

Frequency for baths and brushing depends

on your dog’s coat type – be sure

to research optimal grooming schedules

based on his or her breed. In general,

Short, smooth or wiry coat: Brush once

a week with a rubber-bristled brush.

Long, silky or curly coat: Brush once a

day with a rubber-bristled brush or wire

slicker brush. Use a steel comb to prevent

tangles or mats, if necessary.

Double coat: Use an undercoat rake or

de-shedding tool to gently de-shed once

a week in addition to regular brushing

routines.

When it’s bath time, use a shampoo

formulated for dogs and a damp cloth or

cotton ball to clean around the eyes and

ears without pushing anything into the

eyes or ears. Dry with a microfiber towel

or hair dryer on a low setting.

Cutting Fur

Be careful and work slowly to avoid

mistakes and keep your dog calm and

comfortable. Brush, bathe and completely

dry prior to cutting fur with blunt-ended

shears or small clippers with guide

combs. Specifically trim hair covering

the eyes and private areas and between

your pup’s paw pads. It may be helpful to

watch a tutorial online to ensure success.

Brushing Teeth

You can prevent gum disease and

plaque buildup by brushing your

dog’s teeth with a soft toothbrush and

dog-friendly toothpaste. Make sure your

pet is comfortable and start slow, staying

on the outside surfaces of teeth and

gently rubbing back and forth. Focus on

the area where the tooth surface meets

the gum.

Cascades Park

The loop around Cascades Park is a paved, 1-mile-long path with slight inclines but no major

hills. The park is dog-friendly, as long as Fido is on a leash. There are bathrooms, water fountains,

and “pup-fountains” throughout the facilities as well.

Apalachee Regional Park

For those looking for a challenge, look no further than Apalachee Regional Park, which is one of

the nation’s few sites designed specifically for cross-country running competitions. In fact, it is

the site of the 2021 NCAA Cross Country National Championships. When the park is not being

used for a running event, it is open to the general public for hiking, running, and biking. There

are a number of different course options to choose from, as well as a variety of surfaces, so you

can prepare for any type of race, from flat roads to rocky terrains.

St. Marks Trail

St. Marks is part of the course for the Tallahassee Marathon, which means many runners train

on the course year-round. Residents and visitors come together each year in February to cheer

on runners from around the world, as this event is a qualifying course for the Boston Marathon.

JR Alford Greenway

One interesting fact about three of the most popular Tallahassee parks—Tom Brown, JR Alford

Greenway, and Lafayette—is that they are all connected, which is great for those training for

long-distance races, like the Tallahassee Marathon. At the JR Alford Greenway alone, there are

more than 17 miles of multi-use trails.

Lafayette Heritage Trail

Because Lafayette Heritage Trail connects to Tom Brown and the JR Alford Greenway, it’s a

popular spot for those looking to get in high-mileage runs. At the park entrance, which is located

on the east side of Heritage Park Boulevard, you’ll find picnic pavilions, a restroom, and drinking

water, which is definitely necessary after a long run in the hot summer months! This trail can

also be accessed through the parking lot at Alford Arms.

Debbie Lightsey Nature Park

As one of the newest parks in Tallahassee, Debbie Lightsey Nature Park is attracting residents

from all over town. Whether you’re a trail runner or a nature lover, you’re sure to enjoy the

scenery at this popular park.

Lake Overstreet Trail

The unspoiled natural beauty of North Florida can be found on the Lake Overstreet Trails. These

hilly paths are ideal for hikers, runners, or mountain bikers. The main trail is an approximately

five-mile, double-loop path that winds through hardwood forests and around Lake Overstreet.

There is also a two-mile loop located near the top at the entrance from Forest Meadows. It

should be noted that there are mildly uneven surfaces and tree roots on the bottom loop.

Miccosukee Canopy Greenway

Located on the east side of town, the Miccosukee Canopy Road Greenway is a popular linear

park running parallel to the Miccosukee Canopy Road. Located on 500 acres, the path runs

approximately 6.5 miles from end to end. The main path is mostly smooth, made up of gravel

and crushed stone. While out on this trail, you will see people of all ages hiking, running,

mountain biking, and horseback riding. From flat open pastures to hilly and wooded, this trail

(and numerous side trails) offers a variety of challenges for beginner to intermediate skill levels.

Lake Ella & Fred Drake Park

Lake Ella is located in Midtown, and it is another popular walking and jogging location for

Tallahassee locals. As you’re running around the .7-mile paved loop, you can enjoy lake views

and get a glimpse of the ducks.

criminals and protect yourself

from scams

Criminals are smart, and increasingly sophisticated. With

technology and artificial intelligence (AI) at their fingertips, they

are constantly finding clever ways to take advantage of honest,

hard-working Americans. There are a variety of scams criminals

use to steal money, and many are turning to more cunning methods

that involve bank accounts, debit and credit cards and gift cards.

People love gift cards; they’ve been the top requested gift in

America for nearly two decades according to the National Retail

Federation. But while everyday folks love giving, receiving and using

gift cards, unfortunately so do criminals. Just like other payment

methods, criminals use intelligent means of stealing money from

gift cards — but we have some tips for how to spot them, outsmart

the scammers and protect yourself.
