The local roots of a global success story

The global success story of the architects

Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron has

local roots. This book traces these origins

while identifying the essential ideas, professional

ethics, and development of their

practice, established in 1978.

The biographies of both architects and the

activities of their practice are intimately

bound up with Basel. With this embeddedness

as a point of departure, the authors

analyze the motifs, constructive principles,

and spatial design of their oeuvre.

In addition, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de

Meuron lead us on tours through Basel and

its surroundings: statements, along with

photographs taken for this volume by George

Dupin, present the places and buildings that

have played key roles for their work. The book

is rounded out by an extensive interview.

The book describes the story of Clarté,

Le Corbusier’s first apartment building, continuing

the narrative into the 21st century.

The steel skeleton building completed in

Geneva in 1930/1932 is a prototype of the

Moderne style and a precursor of the Unité

d’Habitation.

The building was neglected for many decades

and not listed as a historic building until

the 1990s. In 2007 the external envelope was

repaired as the first step, followed by refurbishment

of the interior, in which building

preservation requirements were taken into

account in an exemplary manner.

The building log book by the architects

and structural engineers is illustrated with

numerous new and historic drawings and

photographs, and has been supplemented

with an account of the building’s history.

The renovated building is presented in large

photographs.

The Zacherlhaus is located in the heart of

Vienna, just 180 meters from St. Stephen’s

Cathedral, and is one of the most important

buildings created by the Otto Wagner School.

It was built in the years from 1900 to 1913

and designed for its owner Johann Zacherl by

Jože Pleˇcnik, who later taught at the Academy

of Fine Arts in Prague and from 1925 worked

on the urban renewal of Ljubljana. It was the

first combined residential and commercial

building of modern style in the historic inner

city and is one of the best known buildings in

Vienna. This generously illustrated, authentic

publication documents the building and its

thorough renovation, which will be completed

in 2015; it includes contributions by experts

Martin Kohlbauer founded his practice in

Vienna in 1991. Previously he had studied

at the Academy of Fine Arts, in the Master

Class of Prof. Gustav Peichl, for whom he also

worked. In that function he took responsibility

for project managing the building of the art

and exhibition hall in Bonn. In addition to the

design of exhibitions, his own oeuvre includes

primarily large projects in which his architectural

strength becomes apparent – highdensity

housing, a hospital, a wellness facility,

office buildings and industrial developments.

With his sculptural, bright and user-friendly

architecture, Kohlbauer has had a sustainable

impact on Vienna’s architecture. The book

presents his most important buildings since

Plottegg is one of Austria’s most high-profile

avant-garde architects. He has been

pioneering the use of the computer since the

1980s. However, using the technology purely

as an electronic drawing board is not enough

for him – programs are intended to generate

solutions. The works selected for this publication

therefore represent the architect’s design

concepts and working methods rather than

solutions for building projects.

The projects are primarily presented in the

form of images; descriptions, data and comments

have been reduced to the minimum

possible. To that extent, this book is also a

visual supplement to his essays published

up to now. This first monograph on Plottegg’s

built and planned architecture closes a gap

Discovering the unused potential of wood

Wood is usually perceived as a “traditional”

material. However, the properties of this

material have now for some time made it possible

to design free forms and highly complex

structures. Today, the wood laboratory of the

EPF Lausanne, which was originally founded

by Julius Natterer, is testing the production

of origami structures, ribbed shells, fabric

structures and curved panels under the

guidance of Professor Weinand using digital

calculation and computer-aided processing

methods. The research results are tested in

prototypes, which demonstrate the potential

applications in large-scale timber buildings.

By exploring the hitherto unused potential of

wood as a construction material, this book

provides an exciting and inspiring outlook on

a new generation of timber buildings.

Building with wood as an ecologically viable

material is a tradition with a long history.

In the most typical method, elements are

connected by using wood joints which do not

require the assistance of adhesives or

metal connectors.

By looking at several hundred examples from

Japan, China and 18 European countries,

this book describes in great detail the history

of timber architecture in terms of its technical,

aesthetic and ecological dimensions.

This thorough study is a mine of information

Systematic presentation of modern

building construction

Modern Construction Handbook has become

a modern classic of building construction

literature. In the USA, it is used as a reference

work for many architectural courses. With the

chapters “Material“, “Wall”, “Roof”, “Structure”,

“Environment” and ”Applications” it systematically

explores the subject and provides a clear

and efficient structure to the reader.

For the fourth edition, many of the 3D illustrations

have been updated and, likewise, the

technical information has been brought up to

The most important aspects of building

technology in one volume

As building construction is becoming increasingly

complex, the field of building technology

is becoming more and more important.

As an intermediary between all parties involved

in a construction project, the architect

must be able to understand what is involved

and to advise his clients. This volume covers

the fields of water supply and disposal,

electric installations and the energy-related

subjects, i.e. heating, ventilation and lighting.

Integrative linking of indoor and outdoor spaces

Building openings provide light, ventilation

and climate control for rooms. At the same

time, they are essential functional and design

elements of facades, enabling communication

between indoor and outdoor spaces as transparent

or translucent structural components.

Doors must meet exacting standards for

materials, construction types and installation

conditions, as well as for fire, noise and thermal

insulation, energy efficiency, airtightness

and building security. Volume 1 provides

in-depth technical information about facade

openings. In addition to standards and safety

features, the publication covers materials,

components, construction types and specifics

of structural connections, including solutions

on how to deal with existing older or historic

Planning fundamentals

for exhibition spaces

The museum as a building type and architectural

space bear a complex relationship to

each other. Architecture competes with the

exhibited objects on the one hand and gives

way to them on the other, enabling the museum

to develop as regards content. Between

these two poles, this book is intended to facilitate

communication in the planning process.

Inspiration from nature

People have been looking at nature as an

example, as a model and as something to

emulate since time immemorial. Nature has

inspired with the perfect construction of some

of its objects and their optimized use of energy,

as well as their adaptability and versatility.

Nature is an immense source of inspiration

for creative people – but also presents a

counterpoise to one’s creative work. Scientists,

engineers, architects and artists all

drink of nature’s rich chalice, they learn from

it and draw inspiration from it. Using many

examples, the book illustrates how designers

have learnt from nature and outlines avenues

of potential further learning.

New architecture from

Norway

Norwegian architecture has been in the international

spotlight in recent years. Following

the success of Made in Norway, this second

volume presents a selection of 40 new examples

of the best contemporary architecture

Norway has to offer. These projects – large

and small, rural and urban – are examples of

how architects in Norway have reacted

to the challenges of today. How are the different

aspects of a modern Scandinavian society

reflected in its architecture? How are new

technical and material possibilities translated

into relevant buildings for the 21st century?

The book is based on presentations from

Arkitektur N, the Norwegian Review of Architecture,

but also contains new material,

explaining and discussing some of the main

challenges of architecture today, as seen

from Norway.

Cities in China are extremely dynamic and

experience high pressure to grow, transform

and adapt. But in what directions, on what

basis and to what ends? The authors and their

team have researched the intensive transformation

processes of about one hundred

neighborhood communities that were created

in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Suzhou

in the last 30 years, ranging from inner-city

to peripheral areas, starting from planning

and leading up to user satisfaction studies.

This publication explores the contested territory

between the state and corporate drive

to “securitise” urban space – and the principle

of the city as a site for enacting open civil

society, participatory democracy, and the

freedom of speech and assembly. Starting

from the disputed redevelopment of the Oslo

Government Quarter since its attack in 2011,

the book functions as a broader discursive

platform mediating opposing positions at

the intersection of architecture/urbanism

and security/democracy. The book interposes

essays, interviews, site drawings, a lexicon

of terms, and photo-essays documenting

fieldwork in the UK, USA, Israel, Palestine

and Spain. Contributors include: S. Graham,

Digitally controlled

logistics alter the city

In the 19th century railroads and canals

provided both structure and motor for city

development. This role has been taken over

today by the global flow of data and products,

as this book argues. Flow of material and

communication is the DNA of contemporary

environments. This development has enormous

and partially unfathomable implications

for our city fabric. Countertrends to the

ubiquitous internet retail trade – to name one

of the most palpable phenomena – are gaining

momentum as well, exemplified by the

criticism of labor conditions in e-commerce

and the trend to buy regional products from

local stores. The author describes the current

development and its impact on architecture,

landscape architecture and urbanism.

The city is more than demography and architecture,

it is a state of mind. Various groups,

scenes and subcultures, widely known as

“men in the street”, shape and are shaped

by urban space and its history according to

Design interventions for the reuse of existing

structures must face the question of the past

and the extent to which it should be included

in the design for the future. This is the point

of departure of Int | AR, a yearly publication on

current issues in international adaptive reuse.

When and how is material from an existing

building the catalyst for art? When does

art create function and program within adaptive

reuse projects? How can art transform

the economics of a built context? When and

where does art become building and building

become art?

This Int | AR volume presents essays, built or

Garden festivals are often a testing ground for

landscape designers – and offer the chance

to try out ideas in a confined space that can

later be applied to larger projects. While

renowned garden festivals in Europe are

Chaumont-sur-Loire, Floriade in the Netherlands

and Chelsea Fringe in London, the International

Garden Festival in Métis in northern

Design research is multi-faceted and undergoing

constant change. This book investigates

the status quo of things and outlines the

elementary issues faced by researchers.

Sixteen international authors address four

different aspects in their personal statements:

Are there differences between design

practice and the practice of design research?

What alliances between text and artefact

are possible in the search for new knowledge?

How does design research translate and

transform theories and methods from other

disciplines? Is design research moving towards

becoming a formal discipline and, if so,

would this really be of benefit? This compendium

is a survey of a fast-growing research

Combining typography and architecture

Whether small and delicate or conspicuous

and large – lettering on buildings and in the

public realm significantly affects the urban

environment. But how can architecture and

graphics combine at a high-quality level of

design? The core of this manual is formed by

twenty contemporary archigraphy projects.

Each of these integral projects represents a

strategy of how architecture can be enriched

by graphic elements – structurally, materially

or visually. The methods illustrated can thus

be used as inspiration for the reader’s own

designs. An in-depth compilation of lettering

techniques, practical advice on project management

The publication is a compilation of the

results of the artistic “Digital Synesthesia”

research project (2013–2016), and a first

comprehensive compendium on the topic of

“digital synesthesia”. “Digital synesthesia” is a

completely new concept of the digital arts in

the 21st century that combines the multimedia

esthetics of digital art based on binary

code with the multi-modality of synesthesia

as a form of perception. With the term “digital

synesthesia” the publishers not only give this

new phenomenon a name. Contributions from

well-known media and arts theorists, media

artists and neuroscientists also exciting accounts

of the research into the possibilities

of synesthetic perception of multimedia digital

works of art.

In a comprehensive overview and with

multi-faceted background information, the

work documents the Vienna University of

Applied Arts’ art festival of the same name.

The centerpiece of this hybrid of a book and

multimedia reportage is a digital data carrier

with short films and interviews with the

participating performance artists. The diverse

contributions are supported by texts and

artistic photography. The book thus becomes

an account of past events, which – as sudden

interventions in public space – were difficult

to capture, but have here been compiled

into a permanent exhibition. This virtual exhibition

space is introduced by contributions

from the two curators, Gerald Bast and Peter

Weibel.

Margot Pilz is one of the first artists working

in conceptual and new media art. In her

early photographic work, she already takes

an experimental and performative approach.

Conceptually, her work is influenced by the

avant-garde scene of the 1960s and 1970s.

In appreciation of the importance of her

oeuvre, her performative work in photography

and her pioneering role in the field of new media

and digital art are illustrated here for the

first time. She was one of the first artists to

use the computer in her work. Margot Pilz has

gone beyond traditional boundaries, bravely

trying out new techniques and materials and

highlighting social taboos and stereotypes.

Radical, actionistic, feminist and self-determined

– these are characteristics of her

biography and her work.

The World Heritage Site recognized by

UNESCO in 2011 covers locations in Germany,

France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia.

The stilt houses provide us with an insight

into the living conditions of communities

between 5000 and 600 BC, i.e. ranging from

the later Neolithic period to the Iron Age. The

houses are not visible on the surface, but

are hidden in the water along the banks and

in shallow water areas of the sub-alpine

lakes, or under the surface of moorland. As

the stilt houses were hermetically sealed in

these locations, organic materials such as

timber, textile and food remains have been

extraordinarily well preserved. However,

modern use and changes in environmental

conditions pose a threat to these sensitive

historic sites.

On the pretext of the “Malverbot” (an order

disallowing painting), many German painters

and sculptors after 1945 portrayed themselves

in a one-sided way as persecuted

artists. The reason given is often just the fact

that they were represented at the “Entartete

Kunst” exhibition with just one item of work.

This does not take into account the fact

that, apart from that, most artists were not

troubled, and even benefited from public

commissions. After the war, it was soon

forgotten how everyday artists’ activities were

organized under the regulations issued by

the “Reichskammer der bildenden Künste”.

What were the working conditions for artists

and dealers? Was it forbidden to collect

modern art? The book focuses for the first

time on these legal aspects of art under

National Socialism.

Reflexe der immateriellen

und materiellen Kultur Book Series

The monographs and anthologies of the series

Reflexe der immaterielen und materiellen

Kultur discuss artifacts and phenomena of

cultural production and the different forms

of dealing with them.

On the one hand, the guiding principle of “reflex”

is a metaphor for the sensory impression

of a phenomenon or artifact on the mind. On

the other hand, in the sense of “reflection”

about an object, it signifies the act of intentionally

designing a material and spiritual

environment by shaping objects or generating

new objects.

The interdisciplinary studies will be mainly

treating Europe from the 16th century to the

present day.

On the Visualization

of the Museum

In recent years, the emerging field of museum

studies has seen rapid expansion in the critical

study of museums and scholars started

to question the institution and its functions.

To contribute differentiated viewpoints to the

currently evolving meta-discourse on the museum,

this volume aims to investigate how

the institution of the museum has been visualized

and translated into different kinds

of images and how these images have affected

our perception of these institutions.

The volume opens up a debate about the

New laboratory buildings are currently being

planned all around the world. Are they different

from or even better than their predecessors?

To answer this question, the authors of

this book have journeyed into the past and

present of laboratory architecture. They discuss

the images of the research scientist and

the laboratory that have been purveyed since

the natural sciences were institutionalized

in the 19th century. They also examine contemporary

architectural solutions in the light

of influential laboratory architectures

of the latter half of the twentieth century,

thereby discovering a great variety of approaches,

historical and contemporary – for

both the functional interrelation of spaces

and the tension between symbolic façades

and internal structures can take very different

forms.

In 1989, the photographer Nan Goldin curated

Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing in the Artists

Space in New York, the first group exhibition

on the subject of AIDS. Based on these

photographic representations, the study

investigates the importance of AIDS in art.

The publication focuses on the exhibition of

works of art dealing with the epidemic, which

became the subject of political and moral

debate, with funding for the exhibition – which

was seen as a fight for the social visibility of

AIDS – used as an instrument of power.

A new understanding of the artistic, social

and political importance of AIDS-related art

in the USA in the late 1980s is conveyed

using an analysis of the exhibition and six

Image guidance as a

principle of visualization

and perceptionction

Images not only show something, they also

prompt the viewer to carry out the action they

define. The increasing interaction between

technologies, entities and objects via visual

interfaces such as graphical user interfaces,

touchscreens or augmented reality applications

makes the viewer – first and foremost

– a user. The actions of designing, navigating

and intervening can only be carried out when

the viewer has the relevant knowledge in

connection with the image. In order to demonstrate

the inseparable unity of the logic of

visualization and action in image-controlled

operations, interdisciplinary reflection is

needed. This volume discusses the aesthetic,

Building design:

from residential buildings to airports

In formulating a design concept into a viable

plan, architects oscillate constantly between

two planes of observation: the actual design

task in the context of planning typologies

such as residential buildings, office buildings,

museum, or airport, and the individual room,

meaning the kitchen, office, classroom, sanitary

rooms, and so on.

Planning Architecture offers architects and

students a well thought-out planning tool,

in which two main sections reciprocally

complement one another: the “spaces” and

the “typologies” between which the planner

can flexibly oscillate depending on his or her

plane of observation. All relevant planning

information is presented in a detailed clear

fashion, and in context.

These two sections are flanked by an introductory

chapter explaining the basis and

framework for typological design, as well as

a “reference section” that clearly lists general

dimensions and units, regulations and

standards.

Indispensable handbook for architectural design

An ideal design is site-specific, which is the

only way architecture can create or connect

with a specific sense of identity. This requires

addressing the structural and local circumstances.

The method handbook, offers a playful

way in which to systematically ascertain

a complex framework and use it for your own

design.

The “9 × 9 method” takes all relevant factors

and their alternate interaction into consideration:

location, structure, shell, program, and

materiality, all which, in a matrix with various

intersections, produce exactly 9 “fields of ac-

tion” for the design. The individual “fields” are

not only illustrated visually with meaningful

and eidetic pictures, but are also discussed in

texts by leading specialists. For this book, the

“9 × 9 method” was completely re-worked and

redesigned.

The database Building Types Online is based on selected

Birkhäuser publications and comprises contemporary case

studies and solutions for many design tasks, organized by building

types. Besides housing as strong focus, the database offers

numerous other important categories such as schools and kindergartens,

office buildings, industrial buildings, museums, sacred

buildings, research and technology buildings and libraries. Texts

by renowned authors analyze the context of a building type or
