The local roots of a global success story
The global success story of the architects
Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron has
local roots. This book traces these origins
while identifying the essential ideas, professional
ethics, and development of their
practice, established in 1978.
The biographies of both architects and the
activities of their practice are intimately
bound up with Basel. With this embeddedness
as a point of departure, the authors
analyze the motifs, constructive principles,
and spatial design of their oeuvre.
In addition, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de
Meuron lead us on tours through Basel and
its surroundings: statements, along with
photographs taken for this volume by George
Dupin, present the places and buildings that
have played key roles for their work. The book
is rounded out by an extensive interview.

The book describes the story of Clarté,
Le Corbusier’s first apartment building, continuing
the narrative into the 21st century.
The steel skeleton building completed in
Geneva in 1930/1932 is a prototype of the
Moderne style and a precursor of the Unité
d’Habitation.
The building was neglected for many decades
and not listed as a historic building until
the 1990s. In 2007 the external envelope was
repaired as the first step, followed by refurbishment
of the interior, in which building
preservation requirements were taken into
account in an exemplary manner.
The building log book by the architects
and structural engineers is illustrated with
numerous new and historic drawings and
photographs, and has been supplemented
with an account of the building’s history.
The renovated building is presented in large
photographs.

The Zacherlhaus is located in the heart of
Vienna, just 180 meters from St. Stephen’s
Cathedral, and is one of the most important
buildings created by the Otto Wagner School.
It was built in the years from 1900 to 1913
and designed for its owner Johann Zacherl by
Jože Pleˇcnik, who later taught at the Academy
of Fine Arts in Prague and from 1925 worked
on the urban renewal of Ljubljana. It was the
first combined residential and commercial
building of modern style in the historic inner
city and is one of the best known buildings in
Vienna. This generously illustrated, authentic
publication documents the building and its
thorough renovation, which will be completed
in 2015; it includes contributions by experts
on European architecture of the 20th century.

Martin Kohlbauer founded his practice in
Vienna in 1991. Previously he had studied
at the Academy of Fine Arts, in the Master
Class of Prof. Gustav Peichl, for whom he also
worked. In that function he took responsibility
for project managing the building of the art
and exhibition hall in Bonn. In addition to the
design of exhibitions, his own oeuvre includes
primarily large projects in which his architectural
strength becomes apparent – highdensity
housing, a hospital, a wellness facility,
office buildings and industrial developments.
With his sculptural, bright and user-friendly
architecture, Kohlbauer has had a sustainable
impact on Vienna’s architecture. The book
presents his most important buildings since
1991 in a generously illustrated, typologically
arranged compilation.

Plottegg is one of Austria’s most high-profile
avant-garde architects. He has been
pioneering the use of the computer since the
1980s. However, using the technology purely
as an electronic drawing board is not enough
for him – programs are intended to generate
solutions. The works selected for this publication
therefore represent the architect’s design
concepts and working methods rather than
solutions for building projects.
The projects are primarily presented in the
form of images; descriptions, data and comments
have been reduced to the minimum
possible. To that extent, this book is also a
visual supplement to his essays published
up to now. This first monograph on Plottegg’s
built and planned architecture closes a gap
in the documentation of innovative Austrian
architects.

The architectural practice of Johnston
Marklee in Los Angeles is characterized by
its uniform conceptual approach to each
project. It is internationally renowned for
involving contemporary art techniques without
however losing the reference to history
and the basics of architecture. This book
presents the collected work of the architectural
practice since its foundation in 1998;
it reflects the creative process of Johnston
Marklee and their cooperation with experts in
related fields. The book revolves around seven

Capital Gate, also known as the Leaning Tower
of Abu Dhabi, is a skyscraper with a striking
lean. Inclined by 18 degrees to the west, this
spectacular high-rise was made possible by
a diagrid structure. The iconic building even
received an entry into the Guinness World
Records as the „world’s furthest leaning
man-made tower“. The complexity of every
aspect of the design, fabrication and erection
of this project would not have been possible
without the use of digital modeling which was
explored at a very high level. This book tells
the story behind the design by architectural

structural concept and shows a building of

Discovering the unused potential of wood
Wood is usually perceived as a “traditional”
material. However, the properties of this
material have now for some time made it possible
to design free forms and highly complex
structures. Today, the wood laboratory of the
EPF Lausanne, which was originally founded
by Julius Natterer, is testing the production
of origami structures, ribbed shells, fabric
structures and curved panels under the
guidance of Professor Weinand using digital
calculation and computer-aided processing
methods. The research results are tested in
prototypes, which demonstrate the potential
applications in large-scale timber buildings.
By exploring the hitherto unused potential of
wood as a construction material, this book
provides an exciting and inspiring outlook on
a new generation of timber buildings.

Building with wood as an ecologically viable
material is a tradition with a long history.
In the most typical method, elements are
connected by using wood joints which do not
require the assistance of adhesives or
metal connectors.
By looking at several hundred examples from
Japan, China and 18 European countries,
this book describes in great detail the history
of timber architecture in terms of its technical,
aesthetic and ecological dimensions.
This thorough study is a mine of information
to specialists in this field; it opens up to the
craftsman of today what has become an
almost forgotten world and provides a fascinating
account for the general reader.

Systematic presentation of modern
building construction
Modern Construction Handbook has become
a modern classic of building construction
literature. In the USA, it is used as a reference
work for many architectural courses. With the
chapters “Material“, “Wall”, “Roof”, “Structure”,
“Environment” and ”Applications” it systematically
explores the subject and provides a clear
and efficient structure to the reader.
For the fourth edition, many of the 3D illustrations
have been updated and, likewise, the
technical information has been brought up to
date. “Applications” showcases current developments,
such as those relating to the mass
customized manufacturing of components,
and presents material and construction innovations.
A compact and systematic handbook
filled with information, produced for students
and young architects alike.

The most important aspects of building
technology in one volume
As building construction is becoming increasingly
complex, the field of building technology
is becoming more and more important.
As an intermediary between all parties involved
in a construction project, the architect
must be able to understand what is involved
and to advise his clients. This volume covers
the fields of water supply and disposal,
electric installations and the energy-related
subjects, i.e. heating, ventilation and lighting.
The compendium combines the successful
individual volumes Room Conditioning and
Water Cycles and supplements these with the
two hitherto unpublished volumes Electric
Installation and Lighting Design. The student
and architect are introduced to the basic
principles, terms and systems of building
technology installations and equipment.

Integrative linking of indoor and outdoor spaces
Building openings provide light, ventilation
and climate control for rooms. At the same
time, they are essential functional and design
elements of facades, enabling communication
between indoor and outdoor spaces as transparent
or translucent structural components.
Doors must meet exacting standards for
materials, construction types and installation
conditions, as well as for fire, noise and thermal
insulation, energy efficiency, airtightness
and building security. Volume 1 provides
in-depth technical information about facade
openings. In addition to standards and safety
features, the publication covers materials,
components, construction types and specifics
of structural connections, including solutions
on how to deal with existing older or historic
windows.

The surfaces and composition of flooring
make a decisive contribution to the perceived
atmosphere, quality and appreciation of
rooms. At the same time, flooring must be capable
of bearing the enormous loads expected

the construction and the design of flooring. In
addition to a fundamental theoretical basis,
it offers decision-making tips and background
information on various types of flooring and
materials as well as how to plan proper structural

Planning fundamentals
for exhibition spaces
The museum as a building type and architectural
space bear a complex relationship to
each other. Architecture competes with the
exhibited objects on the one hand and gives
way to them on the other, enabling the museum
to develop as regards content. Between
these two poles, this book is intended to facilitate
communication in the planning process.

Inspiration from nature
People have been looking at nature as an
example, as a model and as something to
emulate since time immemorial. Nature has
inspired with the perfect construction of some
of its objects and their optimized use of energy,
as well as their adaptability and versatility.
Nature is an immense source of inspiration
for creative people – but also presents a
counterpoise to one’s creative work. Scientists,
engineers, architects and artists all
drink of nature’s rich chalice, they learn from
it and draw inspiration from it. Using many
examples, the book illustrates how designers
have learnt from nature and outlines avenues
of potential further learning.

In focus:
the diversity of China’s contemporary architecture
China is not only a playground for international
architectural practices, but has its own
active architectural scene. Twenty-six projects
completed during the last four years focus
on this diverse output. With the work in their
own country, Chinese architects take a position
between international influences
and China’s rich building tradition. All buildings
are introduced with detailed project
descriptions, relevant plans and numerous
color photographs. The range of examples
includes the reuse of historic factory
buildings, experimental new buildings and
new applications of old building materials
such as bamboo. An introductory essay
provides an overview of the current positions
of Chinese architects.

New architecture from
Norway
Norwegian architecture has been in the international
spotlight in recent years. Following
the success of Made in Norway, this second
volume presents a selection of 40 new examples
of the best contemporary architecture
Norway has to offer. These projects – large
and small, rural and urban – are examples of
how architects in Norway have reacted
to the challenges of today. How are the different
aspects of a modern Scandinavian society
reflected in its architecture? How are new
technical and material possibilities translated
into relevant buildings for the 21st century?
The book is based on presentations from
Arkitektur N, the Norwegian Review of Architecture,
but also contains new material,
explaining and discussing some of the main
challenges of architecture today, as seen
from Norway.

Cities in China are extremely dynamic and
experience high pressure to grow, transform
and adapt. But in what directions, on what
basis and to what ends? The authors and their
team have researched the intensive transformation
processes of about one hundred
neighborhood communities that were created
in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Suzhou
in the last 30 years, ranging from inner-city
to peripheral areas, starting from planning
and leading up to user satisfaction studies.
This in-depth overview on neighborhood typology

This publication explores the contested territory
between the state and corporate drive
to “securitise” urban space – and the principle
of the city as a site for enacting open civil
society, participatory democracy, and the
freedom of speech and assembly. Starting
from the disputed redevelopment of the Oslo
Government Quarter since its attack in 2011,
the book functions as a broader discursive
platform mediating opposing positions at
the intersection of architecture/urbanism
and security/democracy. The book interposes
essays, interviews, site drawings, a lexicon
of terms, and photo-essays documenting
fieldwork in the UK, USA, Israel, Palestine
and Spain. Contributors include: S. Graham,
M. Sorkin, D. Harvey, G. Agamben, Y. Yasky,

Digitally controlled
logistics alter the city
In the 19th century railroads and canals
provided both structure and motor for city
development. This role has been taken over
today by the global flow of data and products,
as this book argues. Flow of material and
communication is the DNA of contemporary
environments. This development has enormous
and partially unfathomable implications
for our city fabric. Countertrends to the
ubiquitous internet retail trade – to name one
of the most palpable phenomena – are gaining
momentum as well, exemplified by the
criticism of labor conditions in e-commerce
and the trend to buy regional products from
local stores. The author describes the current
development and its impact on architecture,
landscape architecture and urbanism.

The city is more than demography and architecture,
it is a state of mind. Various groups,
scenes and subcultures, widely known as
“men in the street”, shape and are shaped
by urban space and its history according to
imaginations, nightmares and dreams. Urban
anthropologists get immersed in this closely
knit fabric of urban culture and conduct field
research with all their senses.
The reader provides a compact introduction

Design interventions for the reuse of existing
structures must face the question of the past
and the extent to which it should be included
in the design for the future. This is the point
of departure of Int | AR, a yearly publication on
current issues in international adaptive reuse.
When and how is material from an existing
building the catalyst for art? When does
art create function and program within adaptive
reuse projects? How can art transform
the economics of a built context? When and
where does art become building and building
become art?
This Int | AR volume presents essays, built or
unbuilt projects and ideas that investigate the
relationship of art and building reuse.

Garden festivals as showcases
for landscape design
Garden festivals are often a testing ground for
landscape designers – and offer the chance
to try out ideas in a confined space that can
later be applied to larger projects. While
renowned garden festivals in Europe are
Chaumont-sur-Loire, Floriade in the Netherlands
and Chelsea Fringe in London, the International
Garden Festival in Métis in northern
Quebec is probably the best-known festival
in North America. Since 2000 it has presented
more than 150 temporary gardens at the
cutting edge of garden design and environmental
art. This publication will provide a
survey of garden festivals and their role in
landscape design and then present a selection
of 25 gardens from Métis in typological
order, amongst them works by Ken Smith,
Topotek 1, Diana Balmori, and Snøhetta.

Emmy Zweybrück (1890–1956) was an allround
artist who trained at the Vienna School
of Applied Arts and worked in the fields of
graphic design, book design and toy production.
She very soon started her own studio
in Austria and, from the late 1920s, was
also successful in the USA. She increasingly
shifted her activities to the USA and made
an innovative contribution to the applied arts
movement there. For the first time, this book

Design research is multi-faceted and undergoing
constant change. This book investigates
the status quo of things and outlines the
elementary issues faced by researchers.
Sixteen international authors address four
different aspects in their personal statements:
Are there differences between design
practice and the practice of design research?
What alliances between text and artefact
are possible in the search for new knowledge?
How does design research translate and
transform theories and methods from other
disciplines? Is design research moving towards
becoming a formal discipline and, if so,
would this really be of benefit? This compendium
is a survey of a fast-growing research
field and, at the same time, provides pointers
for personal orientation.

Combining typography and architecture
Whether small and delicate or conspicuous
and large – lettering on buildings and in the
public realm significantly affects the urban
environment. But how can architecture and
graphics combine at a high-quality level of
design? The core of this manual is formed by
twenty contemporary archigraphy projects.
Each of these integral projects represents a
strategy of how architecture can be enriched
by graphic elements – structurally, materially
or visually. The methods illustrated can thus
be used as inspiration for the reader’s own
designs. An in-depth compilation of lettering
techniques, practical advice on project management
and a glossary of specialist terms
make this manual an unrivalled design tool
for the joint work of architects and graphic
designers.

The extensive oeuvre of Eva Choung-Fux is
characterized by her accomplished handling
of graphic printing methods on the one hand,
and by her close personal relationship with
Asian culture on the other. She spent several
years in Korea and Japan. During her decades
of teaching at the erstwhile Academy for Applied
Art in Vienna, she explored – together
with the students – new approaches to socially
relevant topics and then became the first
teacher of artistic photography. Poetry and
committed literature are constantly present
in her creative work – from forms of scriptural
abstraction and extensive superimpositions
of text in her paintings through to the loss
of semiotic character. The book offers a first

The publication is a compilation of the
results of the artistic “Digital Synesthesia”
research project (2013–2016), and a first
comprehensive compendium on the topic of
“digital synesthesia”. “Digital synesthesia” is a
completely new concept of the digital arts in
the 21st century that combines the multimedia
esthetics of digital art based on binary
code with the multi-modality of synesthesia
as a form of perception. With the term “digital
synesthesia” the publishers not only give this
new phenomenon a name. Contributions from
well-known media and arts theorists, media
artists and neuroscientists also exciting accounts
of the research into the possibilities
of synesthetic perception of multimedia digital
works of art.

In a comprehensive overview and with
multi-faceted background information, the
work documents the Vienna University of
Applied Arts’ art festival of the same name.
The centerpiece of this hybrid of a book and
multimedia reportage is a digital data carrier
with short films and interviews with the
participating performance artists. The diverse
contributions are supported by texts and
artistic photography. The book thus becomes
an account of past events, which – as sudden
interventions in public space – were difficult
to capture, but have here been compiled
into a permanent exhibition. This virtual exhibition
space is introduced by contributions
from the two curators, Gerald Bast and Peter
Weibel.

Margot Pilz is one of the first artists working
in conceptual and new media art. In her
early photographic work, she already takes
an experimental and performative approach.
Conceptually, her work is influenced by the
avant-garde scene of the 1960s and 1970s.
In appreciation of the importance of her
oeuvre, her performative work in photography
and her pioneering role in the field of new media
and digital art are illustrated here for the
first time. She was one of the first artists to
use the computer in her work. Margot Pilz has
gone beyond traditional boundaries, bravely
trying out new techniques and materials and
highlighting social taboos and stereotypes.
Radical, actionistic, feminist and self-determined
– these are characteristics of her
biography and her work.

Anthology on interiors
of the Moderne style
This book is a scientific anthology and a text
mosaic on the modern interior, its origins
and its historic development. In recent years,
science has increasingly focused on the
subject of the interior; this book investigates
the subject from different perspectives, the
resumé of a symposium at the Sigmund Freud
Museum in Vienna. Experts in the fields of
architectural history, philosophy and psychology
analyze the modern trend towards the
individual design of interiors beyond fashion
and good taste; the atelier and practice of
Lucian and Sigmund Freud, the interiors in
Proust’s novels, Wittgenstein’s house and
Kiesler’s Endless House.

The World Heritage Site recognized by
UNESCO in 2011 covers locations in Germany,
France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia.
The stilt houses provide us with an insight
into the living conditions of communities
between 5000 and 600 BC, i.e. ranging from
the later Neolithic period to the Iron Age. The
houses are not visible on the surface, but
are hidden in the water along the banks and
in shallow water areas of the sub-alpine
lakes, or under the surface of moorland. As
the stilt houses were hermetically sealed in
these locations, organic materials such as
timber, textile and food remains have been
extraordinarily well preserved. However,
modern use and changes in environmental
conditions pose a threat to these sensitive
historic sites.

On the pretext of the “Malverbot” (an order
disallowing painting), many German painters
and sculptors after 1945 portrayed themselves
in a one-sided way as persecuted
artists. The reason given is often just the fact
that they were represented at the “Entartete
Kunst” exhibition with just one item of work.
This does not take into account the fact
that, apart from that, most artists were not
troubled, and even benefited from public
commissions. After the war, it was soon
forgotten how everyday artists’ activities were
organized under the regulations issued by
the “Reichskammer der bildenden Künste”.
What were the working conditions for artists
and dealers? Was it forbidden to collect
modern art? The book focuses for the first
time on these legal aspects of art under
National Socialism.

On the application of information technology
in the arts and humanities
Research and communication processes in
the arts and humanities are undergoing profound
change. On the one hand, the digitalization
of the source material promises global
availability “from your desk”, on the other
hand, new approaches and applications
are developed in information technology
which – under the key word digital humanities
(German: eHumanities) – improve the
scientific exploration and evaluation of the
material available in the humanities.
The contributions in this volume discuss
approaches, problems and issues in the
development of this research environment
from a multidisciplinary point of view, and risk
a view to future development and research

Reflexe der immateriellen
und materiellen Kultur Book Series
The monographs and anthologies of the series
Reflexe der immaterielen und materiellen
Kultur discuss artifacts and phenomena of
cultural production and the different forms
of dealing with them.
On the one hand, the guiding principle of “reflex”
is a metaphor for the sensory impression
of a phenomenon or artifact on the mind. On
the other hand, in the sense of “reflection”
about an object, it signifies the act of intentionally
designing a material and spiritual
environment by shaping objects or generating
new objects.
The interdisciplinary studies will be mainly
treating Europe from the 16th century to the
present day.

On the Visualization
of the Museum
In recent years, the emerging field of museum
studies has seen rapid expansion in the critical
study of museums and scholars started
to question the institution and its functions.
To contribute differentiated viewpoints to the
currently evolving meta-discourse on the museum,
this volume aims to investigate how
the institution of the museum has been visualized
and translated into different kinds
of images and how these images have affected
our perception of these institutions.
The volume opens up a debate about the
epistemological and historiographical significance
of a variety of different images and
representations of the Art Museum, including
the transformation or adaptation of the
image of the art museum across periods and
cultures.

New laboratory buildings are currently being
planned all around the world. Are they different
from or even better than their predecessors?
To answer this question, the authors of
this book have journeyed into the past and
present of laboratory architecture. They discuss
the images of the research scientist and
the laboratory that have been purveyed since
the natural sciences were institutionalized
in the 19th century. They also examine contemporary
architectural solutions in the light
of influential laboratory architectures
of the latter half of the twentieth century,
thereby discovering a great variety of approaches,
historical and contemporary – for
both the functional interrelation of spaces
and the tension between symbolic façades
and internal structures can take very different
forms.

In 1989, the photographer Nan Goldin curated
Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing in the Artists
Space in New York, the first group exhibition
on the subject of AIDS. Based on these
photographic representations, the study
investigates the importance of AIDS in art.
The publication focuses on the exhibition of
works of art dealing with the epidemic, which
became the subject of political and moral
debate, with funding for the exhibition – which
was seen as a fight for the social visibility of
AIDS – used as an instrument of power.
A new understanding of the artistic, social
and political importance of AIDS-related art
in the USA in the late 1980s is conveyed
using an analysis of the exhibition and six
interviews with New York artists and curators.

Image guidance as a
principle of visualization
and perceptionction
Images not only show something, they also
prompt the viewer to carry out the action they
define. The increasing interaction between
technologies, entities and objects via visual
interfaces such as graphical user interfaces,
touchscreens or augmented reality applications
makes the viewer – first and foremost
– a user. The actions of designing, navigating
and intervening can only be carried out when
the viewer has the relevant knowledge in
connection with the image. In order to demonstrate
the inseparable unity of the logic of
visualization and action in image-controlled
operations, interdisciplinary reflection is
needed. This volume discusses the aesthetic,
operational and epistemic conditions under
which visualizations become media of control
and directions for action.

Building design:
from residential buildings to airports
In formulating a design concept into a viable
plan, architects oscillate constantly between
two planes of observation: the actual design
task in the context of planning typologies
such as residential buildings, office buildings,
museum, or airport, and the individual room,
meaning the kitchen, office, classroom, sanitary
rooms, and so on.
Planning Architecture offers architects and
students a well thought-out planning tool,
in which two main sections reciprocally
complement one another: the “spaces” and
the “typologies” between which the planner
can flexibly oscillate depending on his or her
plane of observation. All relevant planning
information is presented in a detailed clear
fashion, and in context.
These two sections are flanked by an introductory
chapter explaining the basis and
framework for typological design, as well as
a “reference section” that clearly lists general
dimensions and units, regulations and
standards.

Indispensable handbook for architectural design
An ideal design is site-specific, which is the
only way architecture can create or connect
with a specific sense of identity. This requires
addressing the structural and local circumstances.
The method handbook, offers a playful
way in which to systematically ascertain
a complex framework and use it for your own
design.
The “9 × 9 method” takes all relevant factors
and their alternate interaction into consideration:
location, structure, shell, program, and
materiality, all which, in a matrix with various
intersections, produce exactly 9 “fields of ac-
tion” for the design. The individual “fields” are
not only illustrated visually with meaningful
and eidetic pictures, but are also discussed in
texts by leading specialists. For this book, the
“9 × 9 method” was completely re-worked and
redesigned.

The database Building Types Online is based on selected
Birkhäuser publications and comprises contemporary case
studies and solutions for many design tasks, organized by building
types. Besides housing as strong focus, the database offers
numerous other important categories such as schools and kindergartens,
office buildings, industrial buildings, museums, sacred
buildings, research and technology buildings and libraries. Texts
by renowned authors analyze the context of a building type or
explain specific aspects of its planning and design such as lighting,
acoustics, urban design or circulation.
