Victory never tasted so sweet
Cleotha Daniels
Flyer Staff Writer
February 22 was a day to be proud of
being an Onaga Buffalo. It was the glorious
day that our boys’ basketball team
was able to defeat the Centralia Panthers.
It had been since 2003 that the Onaga
Buffalos were able to defeat Centralia.
That year the Buffs beat the Panthers in
the TVL tournament, but lost to them in
regular season. This year the team lost
to their rivalry during the TVL tournament,
which took place prior to the regular
season game, where the Buffs sealed
the victory on the Panthers home court.
“It felt great beating my cousins.
I can always say now ‘We beat you
guys on your home court on your Senior
Night,” said senior Jeremy Melvin.
Along with beating Centralia,
Onaga has gained respect and also
bragging rights. Centralia is notorious
for bragging and always talking
“trash and smack” so it’s great to finally
knock them down a few notches.
“We don’t have to listen to Centralia
talk anymore and it proved
that we were capable of winning
big games,” said junior Riley Falk.
The victory also took the Buffs
from being 5th in their sub-state to 4th.
It took the Panthers who were ranked
4th and knocked the team down to 5th.
Although the defeat of the Panthers
Countries seek reform
Valerie Ramage
Flyer Editor
Thousands of protesters in the
Middle East and Africa have stepped
up and asked for reform from their
governments. Most of them have
been successful thus far; however,
some are still fighting. One of the
first revolutions started out in Tunisia
and created a domino effect.
Tunisia: A 26-year-old man, Mohamed
Bouaziz, was selling fruit in
Tunisia without a permit on December
17, 2010. The police found out, beat the
man up and stole his goods. Bouaziz,
in response, poured paint thinner on
himself and set himself on fire. His act
of self-immolation provoked civilians
to protest against their government.
The Populist movement, originally
fueled by ordinary citizens, then
gained the support of labor unions and
teachers. On January 14, President
Zine El Abidine Ben Ali resigned, but
his government was still in control.
On March 9, a Tunisian court is-
Boys’ basketball defeats Panthers
was a major advantage for the Buffs,
it was also a community victory as
well. After the game, many of the
Onaga fans couldn’t believe what
had just happened and were ecstatic.
Most of the cheer section, along
with parents and spectators, made
sued a ruling that dissolved the party
of the ousted President Ben Ali.
After Tunisia attempted
its revolution, other countries
soon followed behind.
Egypt: January 25, 2011 will
be a date that Egypt never forgets.
Egyptians took to the streets and demanded
a change in their autocratic
government. They were protesting
because of poverty, unemployment
and government corruption.
Their protests were inspired by a
successful revolution in Tunisia.
On January 27, Egypt shut off
the internet. Two days later anonymous
internet users helped the
Egyptians get their internet back.
The protests eventually
gained strength and the military
appeared to be neutral.
On February 10, the president tried to
remain in power. The next day, after
eighteen grueling days of protests,
President Hosni Mubarak
stepped down.
their way to court to congratulate the
players on their major accomplishment.
“It felt good to finally beat Centralia,
and to be a part of it is a great
feeling. I hope our next year’s team
will be just as good or better as this
year’s team,” said senior Tyler Helget.
Westboro Church
Court case
8-1 decision in favor of free
speech
Valerie Ramage
Flyer Editor
In March 2006, the Westboro Baptist
Church picketed the funeral of Lance
Corporal Matthew Snyder. Snyder was
killed in a humvee crash in Iraq. The
church members flew to Maryland,
stood the required 1,000 feet from
the funeral and protested the funeral.
Snyder’s father sued the Westboro
Baptist Church for “intentional
infliction of emotional distress.”
The Supreme Court disagreed.
With an 8-1 decision, the Supreme
Court ruled in favor of the Westboro
Baptist Church. The Supreme Court
stated that the church members were
expressing political speech and that
they were in compliance with the law.
“Soldiers risk their lives every
day and [protesting funerals] is disrespectful.
I understand free speech
and all that stuff, but in a way, I
feel [the Westboro Baptist Church]
take the freedoms they were given
for granted. They don’t realize
how they effect people, or maybe
they do,” said senior Corbin Mabe.
DIVIDING LINE During a protest in Egypt, the police hold back the protesters.
The protests in Egypt began on January 25, 2011. The civilians
wanted to change their autocratic government and end poverty. After eighteen
days of protests, President Hosni Mubarak stepped down. Many other
countries have also risen up against their governments for reform.
Yemen: On January 27, 16,000 protesters
joined together in the capital. The
protestors were aiming to oust President
Ali Abdullah Saleh. Much of the
anger among the population was because
of high unemployment. Saleh has
promised that neither him nor his son
will run for the next round of elections.
Libya: Starting in February, demonstrators,
fed up with delays, broke into a
housing project that the government was
building, and occupied it. In response,
Libyan leader responded with a $24 billion
fund for housing and development.
A month later, during another
demonstration, over 300 people
were killed. Many protesters
were gunned down in the streets.
These are not the only countries
seeking reform though. Algeria,
Lebanon, Iran, Jordan and Sudan
are some that are also seeking reform.

Where is the
love?!
It obviously wasn’t at the Super
Bowl!
Cleotha Daniels
Flyer Staff Writer
Two cups of Fergie singing and
sounding like a man, two-thirds of a cup
of Usher still doing dance moves from
the ‘90s, four tablespoons of auto tune,
one teaspoon of people dancing with
boxes on their heads and one pinch of
chaos. Throw those ingredients into a
blender, hit the mix button and there you
have it, the worst halftime show ever!
Elizabeth Griffin
When you walk down the
dense, crowded hallways, it seems
like all you hear is “Can you believe
what so-and-so said about
me?!” or “Whoever and Whats-hisname
are totally fighting again!”
It would appear that the longer we’re in
school the more pointless drama there is.
I think we’re all in need of a serious
reality check. There are more
important things in this world than
people’s opinion about others. If
we put half as much effort in going
“green” or ending word hunger
as we do causing drama or fighting,
the world would be a better place.
I’m not just pointing fingers. I
say “we” because I’m just as guilty
as the next person. But I refuse to
be the person that is so self-centered
and is only concerned about her
own problems that when she takes
a step out into the real world she is
brutally smacked in the face by life.
And if you’re one of those people
who love causing the drama, where
do you get off? Walking around calling
people names, starting rumors,
or just being a jerk like you own
the place. Thinking your poop don’t
DRAMA.
Why can’t we be friends?
Flyer Staff Writer
I know that I’m not the only person
who was thoroughly disappointed when
I heard who was going to be performing
at the halftime show at the Super Bowl.
The Black Eyed Peas, seriously? The
producers of the Super Bowl or whoever
is in charge of the event couldn’t find
anyone else to do it? They had to pick a
group that hasn’t came out with decent
music since they were discovered. My
three-year-old nephew has just about the
same talent as them. But, for some reason
I gave BEP the benefit of doubt. I
thought “Well maybe they won’t have too
bad of a performance.” I thought wrong.
From the beginning of that performance
to the end, I stared at my television
screen with utter disgust. Seeing how
stink? Mr. Bigshot over there thinking
he’s better than everyone. You go
to school at Onaga. Are you really
better than anyone? You make yourself
look like such complete scum
that no one would give you the time
of day if you desperately needed it.
But it takes two people to fight.
If Whats-his-face called you a name,
does the remark really necessitate a
response? Yea, the punk probably deserves
a good old punch in the nose,
but it reduces drama greatly if you just
brush it off and be the better person.
Oh, and a minor pointer for those
of you who are in arguments or debacles,
don’t cuss. I don’t say that
because I’m little Miss Censorship
over here. Dropping the “F-Bomb”
every other word doesn’t make you
cool or tough. It makes you look
stupid and extremely unclassy.
When I get in arguments, I personally
like to slap the person in the face
with vocabulary. That way when they
walk away they can say, “Hey, at least
I learned some new words today!”
This whole drama thing has gotten
out of hand. This isn’t an episode
of “How the World Turns.” I believe
it will go away when we realize that
we’re all apart of something that
doesn’t just involve us as individuals.
Awkward PDA moments
can be avoided
Kendra Baird
Is PDA all that bad though?
gusted. Some parents may be offended
Flyer Staff Writer if you do it in front of their children.
Everyone has heard some- An easy way to get around PDA is to
one else say, “Hey, no PDA!” wait until you’re alone with your partner
However, is PDA all that bad? to display your affection. You could still
PDA is also known as public display be in public, just a less-populated area.
of affection. PDA occurs all the time, It’s quite common to see couples in
especially around Valentine’s Day. Peo- Canada, Europe, Australia, Mexico and
ple who display PDA are usually looked New Zealand publicly displaying affec-
is because people just don’t want to be America, it is against the law for any-
In my opinion, I think PDA is totally PDA. In India, there’s a law that prohib-
acceptable up to a certain point. Holdits PDA altogether. If you’re caught dising
hands, hugging and small pecks playing affection, it’s considered a crim-
but once you really start swapping spit, three months in prison or receive a fine.
you’ve gone a bit too far. Gentle touch- Chances are, you’d probably get both.
other. It makes people around you feel extent, but please take others into
Editorials February
staying on pitch or singing the correct
note wasn’t a factor, all it basically was,
was four people getting on stage and
yelling into microphones that enhanced
their voices with auto tune. Who needs
to sing when you have auto tune, right?
I also thought that the cameo of
Slash, and Fergie “singing” Sweet
Child O’ Mine was random. Don’t get
me wrong; I like the guy, no doubt. Also
his appearance made up for how horrible
BEP was, but I still just don’t get it.
Then, in all of his glory and beauty,
Usher came out of no where
and performed “OMG.” Now I was
happy he was there, but he’s been
doing the same dance moves since
1998. I would have liked to have
seen some variety, but I’m happy
he was there so I won’t be too picky.
Now the ending, before the last piece
they performed, they thought it’d be sentimental
to sing “Where is the Love?”
I didn’t have a problem with that little
number. It wasn’t until after that, they
performed the “Time of My Life” remix.
That’s when things started to get a
bit eccentric for my taste. We had dancers
with boxes on their heads and their
costumes were lighting up. I know they
were trying to go for the futuristic look,
but it didn’t suit that song very well!
What I’m trying to say, is that I
disliked the show in it’s entirety, but
hey, who am I to judge “professionals?”
I just pray that next year is better!
Teen moms face reality
Nikki Watkins
Though the rate of teenage pregnancy
has dropped, it is still an issue
that needs further attention.
Onaga High School has seen its fair
share of pregnant teens walk down
the hall, but it’s a bigger issue than
just at the school. It also affects the
community and the families that
surround the expecting mothers.
The community and families may
not completely understand the reasons
why the pregnancies are not prevented
in the first place. Being the child of a
teen mom myself, I have heard the reasons
that some people have for having
children before graduating from high
school. One of these reasons is to get
attention. The desire to have attention,
whether it is good or bad, is strong in
some people. They lack the acceptance
that they desire. They may think
that having a kid will make them more
liked, in turn, causing acceptance.
A great deal of attention is received
by young mothers during their pregnancies
and after the births of their
children. Some in the community
have struggled to find the happy medium
in how to help and encourage
these young mothers in their struggles
without giving praise to the idea that
it’s acceptable for an unwed teen to
have gotten pregnant in the first place.
Many people tend to think that it
is all fun and games and that even the
The desire for a child
Flyer Staff Writer
bad is not extremely bad. All that they
really see is the perceived glamour of
possessing a happy baby. They don’t
get to see the every day pain and struggle
that goes into raising that child.
The child will have needs. It will need
to have a stable place to live. The
child also requires food and medical
attention, and all of these cost
a lot of money. It requires young
girls to grow up and face the world,
and there are a lot of people and
places that are not very accepting
of the idea of a high school mom.
That baby is not going to go away
any time soon; she will be stuck with
that baby for 18 years at the least. Her
loss her freedom and the right to go
out when she wants to may be devastating.
She will have to worry about
how being away from the child for a
long period of time will impact the
child. Her dating changes its flavor
too. She will need to be thinking about
the future of her child. Some never
do this. The baby will have enough
struggles especially if the mom is
not marrying the father of the child.
Teen moms cause children to struggle
with security and belonging. This
is not an acceptable situation for the
child. It’s wrong to have an abortion but
teenage girls simply shouldn’t allow
themselves to be in these situations, period.
It’s not fun. There are other ways
for a teenage girl to meet her need for
attention. A baby can’t do it for her.

The Xoom has already displayed
great promise and people have speculated
that it would over-take the
At the Super Bowl in Dallas on
February 6, Christina Aguilera was
asked to sing the National Anthem.
As she was singing she messed up
the words- repeating one line of
the verse and leaving out another.
“O’er the ramparts we watched
were so gallantly streaming,” are the
lyrics to the fourth line, but instead
the singer repeated the line, “What so
proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last
a little the second time around, singing,
“What so proudly we watched
Many viewers didn’t notice the
mistake, but others called it embarrassing
Cell phone radiation is a good thing?
Allison Walker
Flyer Staff Writer
Can talking more often on a cell
phone make you smarter? According to
a new study this is very possible. The
study, led by a respected neuroscientist
at the National Institutes of Health, says
that the electromagnetic radiation from
the antenna of wireless devices appears
to activate nearby regions of the brain to
unusually high levels. So because of cell
phones our way of thinking is slowly being
altered. So the next time you’re on
your girlfriend or your boyfriend and
your mom yells at you to get off, say,
Flyer Staff Writer
It may or may not be hard to believe
that your body is actually
70 percent water, but it is.
Water keeps your body healthy, relieves
pain and can give you a glowing
appearance. Next to air, water is
the element most necessary for life.
Water is needed in order to keep your
lungs moist. If your lungs become too
dry, they will be unable to take in oxygen.
Water can also help prevent certain
types of cancers such as breast cancer,
colon cancer and bladder cancer.
Many people know that water
helps maintain a regular body weight.
Drinking ice cold water can increase
your metabolism. Your metabolism
helps regulate the digestive system
and keeps your appetite regular.
there could never be a more beautiful
one hit song More Beautiful You.
Jonny Diaz created a song that has
spoken to millions of people across the
world. The song basically says that we
are all unique and beautiful in God’s
eyes. Many people however fight this
and think negatively about themselves.
Self-esteem is defined as confidence
more teenagers are suffering with
Medicine helps; however, it isn’t good
for your health. Studies have shown
that many headaches are caused from
dehydration. Drinking more water can
help relieve the pain. Water can also
help with back, neck and shoulder pain.
Not only does water keep your body
healthy and relieve pain, water can
also help your appearance. Drinking
the adequate amount of water can help
Water is an essential element to
Teens see these models and think they
Imagine going out to your backyard
and finding that a crack had
formed. At first you might think nothing
of it until it started bulging upward.
In a single week it became five
stories tall and was spouting magma.
That is exactly what happened on
Dionisio Pulido’s farm. A volcano
had formed in Michoacán, a state in
Mexico. The volcano was named Paricutin
after one of the two villages it
destroyed during its many eruptions.
This volcano, to this day, is one of the
most complete studies of a volcano from
birth to inactive. There are many photos
and even videos, one of which was used
in a movie at the time, of this event.
The volcano first erupted on February
20, 1943, while Pulido’s family
was plowing the field. At the point
of the first magma spout, it was only
about one meter tall. One week later it
was five stories tall. The volcano was
fairly active, erupting on a regular basis,
until 1952 when it finally stopped.
The volcano has remained dormant and
has become a minor tourist attraction.
One of the many places of interest is
the San Juan Parangaricutiro Church.
The church is very popular because of
its style and because it is surrounded
by hardened magma at its base. Many
people make trips just to see the church.

The season was ending soon with only
a few games left including sub-state. So
far the Lady Buffs had a 10-11 record.
For season stats, not including sub-state,
the player with the most points score
was Senior Jordan Krohn with 280. Following
was senior Jamie Fischer with
213 points. Fischer also had with 160 rebounds,
123 on defense and 37 on offense.
After beating the Frankfort Wildcats, the
Lady Buffs lost to Washington County, 38-
40. Seniors Jordan Krohn and Jamie Fischer
each scored 16 points that night. Also
Fischer led the team with seven rebounds.
After a loss at home, the girls’ lost again at
the home court of the Wetmore Cardinals, 25-
35. Jamie Fischer led the girls with 11 points.
Following was junior Karley Mclaughlin
with seven points. Rebounding was very
competitive in this game. Junior Morgan
Boys fight for state
Flyer Staff Writer
This has been a very exciting month
for boy’s basketball. With only one loss
out of six games in February The Onaga
boys are doing a pretty good job.
First, they traveled to B&B hoping
to kick this month off on a good
note. Junior Riley Falk led the team
with 16 points. Sadly the boys did
not obtain a victory that night, and
lost by a total of 18 points that night,
leaving the final score at 28-46.
This loss did not phase the guys
much though. On February 10, Frankfort
came down to Onaga hoping to find
an easy win. Senior Jeremy Melvin,
with 15 points, and senior Tyler Helget,
with four 3-pointers, led the team
to victory and won the game 62-41.
The very next day they traveled to
Axtell. Junior Riley Falk, with 21 points,
and senior Jeremy Melvin with 19, secured
a close win. The guys won 59-54.
Another close game was played on
February 15, against Valley Heights
Wrestling
They were there to win
Valorie Herbert
Flyer Staff Writer
Onaga was back on the mat again
and ready to win. Clinton Todd and
Cody Schwant, who were returning
state qualifiers, started, along with the
rest of the team, to prepare for the state
wrestling competition. The regional
competition looked tough, and Todd
expected that his toughest opponent
would be Jesse Cambell, a senior from
Wellsville who was ranked fifth in the
state. On the other hand, Schwant said
that he was mostly looking forward to
a match with Michael Forbes, a senior
from ACCHS and a three-time state
qualifier. Both Todd and Schwant’s
goals were to at least place at the state
competition.
They worked very hard doing the
bounded four times against the Cardinals.
Another loss occurred later on the
Baileyville court, 17-30. Krohn led
with nine points and eight rebounds.
Seven on defense and one on offense.
Next the girls took a win on their
home court against the Frankfort Widcats,
46-38. Jamie Fischer was speedy at
jumping up for those rebounds; she rebounded
eight times! Fischer also scored
17 points while Krohn scored 14 points.
Another win took place at Axtell, 40-17.
Senior Jordan Krohn led the team with 24
points along with seven rebounds. Sophomore
Raegan Hermreck and senior Jamie
Fischer followed with six rebounds.
Valley Heights lost to the Lady Buffs,
42-24. Krohn tallied up 17 points along with
junior Karley McLaughlin, who tallied 12
total points. McLaughlin and senior Amanda
Cordell had two steals this game, helping
the girls travel down the court to a victory.
Onaga lost on their our own home
court to the Bern Indians, 29-39. Junior
Morgan Valburg scored 12 points while
Fischer jumped up for nine rebounds.
The Buffs lost to Centralia with the
score of 30-67. Junior Karley McLaughlin
rebounded four times while senior Jor-
at home. Senior Tyler Helget had another
good game and drained four
3-pointers! Senior Jordan Reisinger
also helped the team by scoring
nine points. The guys won 69-66.
With three wins in a row how
could you not be confident? The next
game they played was against Bern
at home. Junior Riley Falk scored 25
points for the team and senior Seth
Brandon stepped up and scored another
12 points. The game ended 51-32.
The last game of the month was at
Centralia. All the seniors were probably
thinking this would be the last stand.
Well, it was. Onaga boys won against
Centralia with a final score of 50-41.
During the first game during substate,
the Buffalos trampled the small
team of Wakefield. The rival team stood
no chance. The final score was 54-18.
Then Onaga had to face Valley
Heights in the second game during
sub-state. Though it was a tough
game, junior Riley Falk and senior
Jeremy Melvin led the team in
points ending the game 53-41, which
moved the boys into the next round.
Finally, the boy’s played Washington.
Sadly things did not go as
same vigorous workouts as the rest
of the team did, while pushing themselves
to the max. It was all about getting
their opponent pinned in the right
position and getting the upper hand on
the other wrestler. The team did, and
they pushed themselves to the max. It
was all about getting their opponents
pinned and getting the upper hand on
the other wrestler right away.
The regional tournament took place
on Febuary 18 and 19 at Silver Lake
where 24 schools participated. The top
four placers at regionals moved on to
state. Qualifying for state were senior
Zack Parr, senior Cody Schwant,
senior Clinton Todd and sophomore
Chance Bloomer. Sadly, Parr ended up
dislocating his elbow with only six seconds
left in the qualifying-round match
while leading by two points. He was
forced to forfeit the match giving his
opponent the win. Even though Parr
Cheering on the Buffalos
This has been a very interesting
basketball and wrestling season. Both
the cheerleaders and the teams have
worked hard to keep themselves and
the Onaga Buffalo fans happy. Parents
night for the wrestling team was
on Friday, February 4 and the basketball’s
was on Friday, February 18.
The seniors on the wrestling squad
were Allison Walker and Nikki Watkins.
Right now there are no seniors
on the basketball squad. The seniors
on the squads will be missed a lot.
The captains of the cheer squads
have been doing a great job with the
cheerleaders. The basketball cheer
captain is Kori Meyer and the wrestling
cheer captain is Allison Walker.
The cheerleaders had a cancer
week where the basketball cheerleaders
wear pink shirts, pink
bows, pink and white socks and
they have pink shoelaces as well.
“I really like cheering on the guys
while they are trying their best,”
said senior Allison Walker.
Cheerleading boosts the guys’s
spirits while trying to beat their opponents.
During the Centralia game
the girls were so hyped up that they
were screaming at the top of their
lungs while cheering. The crowd is
always heavily involved in the game.
They parents of the cheerleaders
also get very involved with the
girls’ cheering. Sometimes they will
even be screaming louder than the
girls while they are chanting away.
The parents know most of the girl’s
cheers. The parents are very helpful
with the cheerleaders when needed.
that the wrestlers made it to state despite the weather, and he wanted
the Journalism Contestants to make it home safely as well. This was
not good for the Publications students. It meant that they would have to
the wrestlers arrived early. Coach Kite and the two wrestling cheerleaders
A Damaged Knee
Whitnea Magnett
Flyer Staff Writer
You’re at volleyball practice working
on your hitting abilities, your setter sets
the ball to you and you go up to spike.
Next thing you know, you’ve landed and
are on the ground, holding your knee, and
screaming in pain. You go to the doctor, get
an MRI, and the result is that you’ve torn
multiple ligaments in your knee.
One of these ligaments might have been
your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The
ACL is one of the four major ligaments of
the human knee and originates from deep
within the notch of the distal femur.
Anterior cruciate ligament injury is
the most common knee ligament injury,
especially in athletes. Lateral rotational
movements in sports like these are what
cause the ACL to strain and tear. Strains
can sometimes be fixed through physical
therapy and muscle strengthening, though
Street Art
Urban artists illustrate
Zachary Parr
Flyer Staff Writer
Many people categorize street art
as graffiti, and this is usually the case.
But for some truly talented artists such
as Shepard Fairey, Nunca, Blue and Bansky,
street art is a way to express yourself.
Banksy has created some of the greatest
street art that has influenced culture,
yet he remains anonymous. The documentary
"Exit through the Gift Shop"
was about Banksy and other various
street artists. Much of his work features
a satirical and often cynical take on life.
His work ranges from peaceful to dismally
grim portrayals. One such example
of his bleak artwork is his placement
of a painting of a Guantanamo Bay prisoner
in a Disney Land theme park. Many
people speculate that it was a representation
of America's disregard to the cruel
treatment of Guantanamo Bay prisoners.
His art usually has some deeper political
meaning than is evident on the surface.
Fairey's "Obey" paintings are his representation
of the public being controlled by
the government. While at first glance his
artwork might appear to look like graffiti
on the walls, if you look closer you'll see
that they all have some deeper meaning.
You’re driving along, you’re a junior
in high school, you feel like you’re
invincible. Like nothing can stop you.
Your phone goes off, another text from
your best friend. You reach down, with
your hand about half-way there you
stop. “Mom told me not to text while
driving.” You start to pull your hand
back, but it’s your best friend so you
go ahead and grab the phone. You lift
it up and hold it against the steering
wheel. You flip it open and press read,
it’s just one of those stupid forwards,
you don’t even bother to read it. You
tears almost always require surgery.
Reconstructive surgery can utilize several
different tendons and grafts in place of
the torn ACL, including the hamstring and
patellar tendon. Many orthopedic surgeons
prefer to use tendons and grafts from cadavers;
therefore the patient does not have
to rehabilitate more than just their ACL.
Others prefer to use tendons directly from
the patient in order to counteract the potential
for an immune system rejection of the
cadaver tissue.
Besides having an ACL tear, you could
also have a medial meniscus tear. The tear
can be torn by traumatic force encountered
during in sports or other forms of physical
exertion. The traumatic action is most often
a twisting movement at the knee while
the leg is bent. Tears can lead to pain and/
or swelling of the knee joint.
The medial meniscus is a band that
spans the knee joint, located between the
While street art is frowned upon by
government officials, the public opinion
of it is generally high. This could be due
to the fact that the art is often humorous.
One such painting is an image of "The
Naked Man" stenciled on the outside of
a sexual health clinic. Some of my favorite
work of his is his numerous Pulp
Fiction references. In these paintings,
the characters of Pulp Fiction are depicted
holding bananas instead of guns.
The motivations and objectives that
drive street artists are as varied as the
artists themselves. Whether their reasoning
be for activism, personal entertainment
or simply to display their artwork
for a broad, unbiased audience,
the art displays talent that graffiti lacks.
While graffiti could be confused
with street art, graffiti is rarely art.
Thus, street art has been dubbed "neograffiti"
or "post-graffiti" by the public.
I'm not encouraging the readers of
this article to illicit artwork in public
places, but I
do invite the
readers to
explore their
artistic side
and enjoy art
more. Street
art is one of
many ways
to do this.
hit a slick spot. When you finally come
History of Valentine’s
Day
Kendra Baird
Flyer Staff Writer
The day of lovers, Valentine’s
Day, has come and gone in what
seems like an instant. However,
many people don’t really understand
the history of Valentine’s Day.
Saint Valentine’s Day was established
by Pope Gelasius I in 496 A.D.
It is traditionally a day that lovers show
how much strong their love is by giving
each other flowers, candy or cards.
The day first became associated
with romantic love in the
High Middle Ages, when courtly
love became very common.
A “High Court of Love” was established
in Paris on Valentine’s Day
in 1400. The court basically dealt
with love contracts, betrayals, and
violence against women. The judges
of this court were selected by women
on the basis of poetry reading.
Even though Valentine’s Day is
a Christian holiday, other countries
around the world celebrate it, too. In
Norfolk, a character named “Jack”
Valentine knocks on the back door
of houses, leaving presents and candies
for children. In Denmark and
Norway, Valentine’s Day is known
as Valentinsdag. Some may take
the time to have a romantic dinner,
send a card or give their love a rose.
Valentine’s Day is a holiday
that is celebrated all over
the world, just in different ways.
ever can be severe. Is texting a friend
back really worth a life, especially
when the friend can be texted back
later, when it might not cost a life?
Don’t do it, don’t be tempted, don’t
follow the crowd. Texting while driving
is dangerous, and even though
you might think it, you are not invincible.
If you have to make a call
or if you really need to text someone
back, if it’s important enough, then
pull off the side of the road, put it
in park and text or call back. Otherwise,
don’t do it. Several states have
realized that texting while driving is
dangerous. so they have now made
it illegal. Now when you text and
drive or call while driving you might
be doing something that is illegal.
On the flip side, some people have
done studies that show that texting or
calling while driving has made people
more alert. This doesn’t mean it
should be done though, so don’t do it.
Cupid
A Famous Valentine Symbol
Flyer Staff Writer
Cupid, the God of Love, is one
of the most famous Valentine symbols. He
has always played a role
in the celebration of romance. Cupid
comes from the Latin word
cupido, which means “desire.”
Cupid is the son of goddess Venus
and god Mars. He is often pictured
as a winged child whose arrows
pierce the hearts of his victims
which then makes them fall in love.
There are two types of Cupid’s
arrows. One is the Golden Arrow
which signifies true love. The
other is the Leaden Arrow that represents
wanton and sensual passion.
Sometimes, however, his arrows
turn people away from those
who are falling in love with them.
In the Greek mythology Cupid
was named Eros and seen as
one of the primordial gods. Cupid
was often depicted with wings,
a bow and a quiver of arrows.
In both the Greek and Roman
cultures, Cupid’s mother became
jealous of the princess Psyche, who
was beloved by her subjects that
they forgot to worship Venus. Venus
ordered Cupid to make Psyche
fall in love with the vilest thing in
the world. While he was sneaking
around in her room, he accidentally
scratched himself with his arrow
and fell deeply in love with her.
So how did a legendary adult Roman
god become to be a small winged
baby that we now see on Valentine’s
Day cards? This tradition is assumed
to have started in the early 1800’s in
England. The cards were hand made
and since they were usually made
by women, they had cute babies,
hearts and a lot of lace on the cards.
legal to shoot bears, waking
a sleeping bear for the purpose
of taking a photograph
is prohibited. It is considered
an offense to push a live moose
out of a moving airplane. No
one may tie their pet dog to
the roof of a car. For all you
would-be pranksters out
there, it is illegal to string
a wire across any road. Persons
may not live in a trailer as
it is being hauled across the city.
Clowns Beware! It is considered
an offense to feed alcoholic
beverages to a moose.
Honolulu, Hawaii. With family at his
Heres a quote from Bruno Mars himself
having his own opinion towards
his piece. “I was with my friend Benny
songs, and he played me this song that
had a lyric like [the one in “Grenade”]...
He said, this band is not signed, this
Benny, I can relate to that so much, I
want to take that and make it my own.
He was in contact with the dude, and
I started writing my version, basically.
It’s a heartbreaking, heartbreak song,
and I think everyone can relate to that.
You’re so in love with this woman
Restaurant Review
Wow, can I get egg rolls with that?
Flyer Staff Writer
I decided to hit a new restaurant this
month since I have covered mostly fast
food in the past. Instead of fast food, I
figured I needed to cover healthy food
too. Most of the time when a person
thinks about healthy food, they think of
a bland taste and an unsatisfied stomach.
When you go to Express Japan you
will leave with a giant smile and a full
stomach! Who knew treating your body
to some healthy food could taste so good.
A top favorite at Express Japan is the
Chicken Teriyaki meal. They start off by
filling your whole plate with either white
or brown rice with vegetables. Next, they
put a huge pile of Teriyaki Chicken on
top of the rice (for .99 cents extra you can
get double the chicken). You can also add
an Egg roll or Maki Roll to your plate for
.89 cents. Finally, to add the last flavorexploding
touch to the dish they pour a
ladle full of teriyaki sauce onto the food.
Another favorite at the Express Japan
is the Vegetarian Soba, which is $3.99 and
contains only rice, rolls and vegetables.
The Maki Roll is the favorite fried roll
of the bunch. These rolls are a vegetarian
ing retired. The one thing that keeps
him happy is calling his pension agent
in Kansas City and talking to her.
One day CIA agents break into his
house and try to kill him. Using his
skills as a former CIA agent he easily
deals with them and gets away.
Knowing that they would go after
anyone that he cared for, he went
to Kansas City to get Sarah (Mary-
Louise Parker), his pension agent.
When he arrives she doesn’t
believe him and he must take her by
force to save her life. He now knows
that she is safe with him, and decides
to find out why they want him dead.
After searching around he finds a list
The song was written by himself and
his production team, “The Smeezington’s.”
Finally “Grenade” was released
on September 28, 2010. Mars claims
this song as his “personal favorite.”
Before “Grenade” he had another hit
song named “Just the Way You Are.”
Reviewers praised the vocals and
emotional lyrics of the heartbreaking
song. The song is sitting at number
one on the Billboard Hot 100,
Mars’s third number one hit in a row.
An unofficial remix has been created
by Lil Wayne. The song is identical
except for Lil Wayne provides a
16-bar introduction verse to the song.
After it was produced, MTV described
the song as “Lil Wayne delivering
a spoken word-style flow, expressing
devotion for his love interest.”
Mars performed the song in
Bowert Ballroom in New York City
on August 25, 2010. He and his
band performed wearing blue tuxedos
and black skinny ties to represent
the song. Mar’s has also performed
on Saturday Night Live.
relative of sushi. The major ingredients
include: white rice, dried sea weed, cucumber,
avocado, wasabi and soy sauce.
The pros of eating at Express Japan
is that it’s a rare, healthy fast-food restaurant.
For a low price you can get a
huge amount of food! Plus, it’s a cool
experience to see your food cooked in
front of your eyes. I like to make sure
they don’t do anything weird to the food.
This restaurant has another cool feature.
When you order something, the
cashier puts a different colored toothpick
resembling each different menu
item in the side of your paper plate.
One of the cons to eating at Express
Japan is when ordering it is
hard to understand the cashiers’ accents.
He has to repeat everything
to every customer almost five times.
I suggest eating at the Express Japan because
it is truly a unique experience. You
get to try new food, experience a whole different
culture and listen to their language
while you watch them cook your food.
All in all, Express Japan is a great
restaurant! So if you’re in the mood for
something new, head to 1801 S.W. Wanamaker
in Topeka, Kansas. If you want
more information just call 785-273-0508.
many fears of late such as science’s
Huxley wrote “A Brave New World”
to project his prediction of society in the
future. While many may dismiss this as
a fictional book, it may hold some truth.
Every day, new technology is
invented that replaces social interaction.
Society is increasingly entrenched
in the idea that fashion,
status and popularity are the goals
to strive for. Notions like kindness,
compassion and love for thy neighbor
are slowly being bred out of people.
“A Brave New World” is my
favorite book as of late, and I
highly recommend reading it.
“A Brave New World” has been
banned and challenged at various
times. The American Library Association
ranks “A Brave New World” as #52
on their list of most challenged books.
Although some may find this book
The game was highly anticipated.
Dead Space 2 still clings to the enemy
base of the first, as well as introducing
new creatures, adding to the already
dark atmosphere of the game
Released only last month, the
