Pre-Fall 2025

Collection

Gucci presents a sophisticated and

luxurious range of timeless pieces that

embody the brand’s signature blend

of Italian craftsmanship and modern

artistic flair. Creative director Sabato De

Sarno has seamlessly married traditional motifs with

contemporary designs, resulting in an avant-garde

and wearable collection.

Gucci pieces were presented in combinations

you’d never have imagined, even compared to

the versions that inspired these reinterpretations

(regardless of the black-and-white aesthetic).

Notable highlights included ribbed wool ‘trompe

twinsets’—single integrated garments—featuring

sequin-edged lilac and lemon pairings.

The showroom showcased cotton candy faux furs in

similarly sweet shades, while other clothes explored

variations of off-olive and berry-burgundy tones.

Sharply tailored patch-pocket suits, designed for

all genders, came in strikingly unconventional and

hypnotic micro-gingham colour combinations.

The rise of

Chidimma

Adetshina

as first runner-up Miss Universe:

A Story of Ambition

and Triumph

In the dazzling world of pageantry, where

beauty meets intellect and elegance,

few stories shine as brightly as that of

Chidimma Adetshina. Rising from modest

beginnings to clinch the first runner-up

position at Miss Universe, her journey is a

masterclass in ambition, perseverance,

and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

From navigating the pressures of national

competition to becoming a symbol of

inspiration for young women, Chidimma’s story

is one of triumph against all odds.

Fame

For Nigerians, Chidimma Vanessa Onwe

Adetshina came after a controversial issue.

Born in Soweto, South Africa, to a Nigerian

father of Igbo descent, Mr Michael Okey

Onwe Adetshina and a Mozambican mother,

Anabela Rungo, who is now a naturalised

South African. Chidimma’s early years were

deeply influenced by the rich mix of African

cultures, combining her father’s Nigerian roots,

her mother’s Mozambican heritage, and the

South African environment she grew up in.

This unique background shaped her into a

resilient, resourceful individual with a strong

belief in the power of diversity.

Her multicultural background made her

realise that representation and inclusion

matter as she became aware of the difficulties

experienced by people who are excluded

due to their backgrounds due to being part of

several cultures.

The journey to fame for the 24-year-old

beauty queen and law student began on a

rough path during the Miss South Africa 2024

pageant.

In July, Chidimma’s public debut was

nothing short of captivating. Her radiant smile,

unwavering self-assurance,

commanding presence, and

dedication to noble causes

instantly made her win the

hearts of many. However, her

promising journey was soon

overshadowed by xenophobia

controversy after South Africans

questioned her citizenship and

took to social media to call for

her disqualification. Thousands

signed a petition demanding

her withdrawal from the

competition, and ultimately,

she stepped down.

Consequently, the

South African Home Affairs

Department investigated her

citizenship. Their official gazette

cited apparent evidence of

fraud, alleging that her mother

had committed identity theft

in 2001. In all of these, the

Miss South African organisation

confirmed that Chidimma

met all the conditions to still

compete.

South African Grammy-

Award-winning singer Tyla

Laura Seethal and South

African actress, television host

and fashion designer Enhle

Mbali Mlotshwa drummed their

support for Chidimma. They

clearly stated that the beauty

queen committed no offence

as she couldn’t be blamed for

a decision her mother made at

birth.

Reflecting on controversies

she had avoided addressing,

she expressed her sadness

over being deemed “not South

African enough” because

of her name, despite having

spent 23 years in the country.

“It has been hectic; I’ve

been avoiding it because it’s

so emotional for me. I just cried

earlier because I think I need

to get used to talking about it.

It’s not a nice feeling at all, and

I think I’ve been avoiding it a

lot, but it’s now starting to cloud

and affect me. I will have to

deal with it and not suppress it.

What happened wasn’t a minor

thing; it was a preeminent

thing, but I will be okay. South

Africans felt I wasn’t South

African enough because of my

name. I lived there for 23 years.

It’s heartbreaking to see I wasn’t

welcome and accepted”.

In the long run, a Caucasian

woman, Mia Le Roux, won the

pageant, becoming the first

Miss SA winner who is deaf and

has a cochlear implant.

Winning Miss Universe Nigeria

The media helped spread

Chidimma’s predicament far

and wide. Her dreams were

not just going to be shattered.

The National Director of Miss

Universe Nigeria, Guy Murray-

Bruce, invited her to compete

in the 2024 Miss Universe

Nigeria pageant, an invitation

she accepted without any

challenges.

Some Nigerians noted

that the organisers crowned

Chidimma the winner to

console her for her troubles.

South Africans continued to

plot the downfall of Chidimma,

who represented Taraba State,

by massively voting for Ufa

Dania, a plus-sized model

representing Kwara State.

The support from South

Africans made Miss Ufa Dania

the top-leading lady at the

pageant, with 23901 votes,

and Chidimma came second

with 23422 votes. However,

the tables quickly turned after

Nigerians massively voted for

Chidimma and helped her

win the crown on October 31,

Reflecting on her

achievement, Chidimma said

that her victory wasn’t just hers

but a triumph for everyone. She

described it as a genuine call

for unity: “This crown is not just

for beauty; it’s a call for unity.”

Nigeria cannot be completed

without mentioning Agbani

Darego, the eighteen-yearold

who broke records by

becoming the first black

African to win the Miss World

Beauty Pageant.

The men are also flying

the Nigerian flag high; in

December 2024, 23-year-old

Samuel Nwajagu made history

by becoming the first African

to win the prestigious Mister

International title held in

Personal Life

Chidimma married Emeka

Festus Okafor, a Nigerian highlife

businessman better known

as King Sifo, in 2022 at the

age of 22. The union lasted

for a year and didn’t produce

any offspring. In February

2024, they divorced over

irreconcilable differences.

“I got divorced in February.

We were not compatible

because he had this ideology

of what an African married

woman is. I didn’t want to be

in a position where I couldn’t

go out but had to clean,

cook…that was just not for me

because, as a society, we are

way past that phase.”

Before her marriage to King

Sifor, Chidimma had a son; she

noted that her now-dissolved

marriage robbed her of the

feeling of being a wife.

“My parents have been

very supportive, and although

my marriage robbed me

from enjoying the beauty of

pregnancy and being a wife

– overall, it brings me joy that I

get to take new steps with my

son,”

A Story of Ambition and
