Plastics in architecture: a comprehensive introduction
Plastics are high-performance materials of
wide use in the built environment. Their versatile
technical properties are particularly fascinating.
A broad range of form-giving and finishing
processes makes plastic especially
interesting for complex geometries in combination
with digital planning processes. Following
the pioneering plastic structures of
the 1970s, a number of spectacular buildings
have in recent years highlighted the outstanding
technical and aesthetic potential of the
material.
Until now, however, there has been no systematic
treatment of the use of plastic in archi-
tecture. This book fills that gap by providing
an introduction to the structural and design
possibilities of plastic. It introduces the material
and its specific characteristics, describes
various types of plastic in terms of their relevance
for building, explains processing technologies
and presents typical products and
components. A concise presentation of twenty-five
international built projects – organized
by the type of application and the plastic involved
– documents the broad range of plastic
in architecture. Finally, a look ahead at the
future describes the current state of the art in
materials research.
Finally, a systematic treatment of the use
of plastics in architecture

presentation of plastic materials, their
technical properties and design

The new role of ornament in architecture
Ornament is currently acquiring a new status
in architecture. Parametric design and digital
production of building components are radically
altering its role. The free forms of ornament
are no longer antithetical to the constructive
geometry of a building; rather, both
are designed and produced according
to the same logic and using the same tools.
The old opposition between structure and ornament
has been eliminated. This opens
up a wealth of new possibilities of interaction
between function and decoration, volume
and surface, load-bearing structure and
building skin.
This book gives a systematically structured
account of the technologies employed and
the resulting types of ornament, along with
the finishing methods and strategies of application.
Decorating and patterning, perforating
and cutting, layering and coating, forming and
pouring, stacking and covering are presented
using forty built examples of international
contemporary architecture. The author’s
highly qualified inspection and classification
of the new technological possibilities are supplemented
by reports on the experiences of
architects with particular expertise in the
area of advanced ornament: Sam Jacob of
Fashion Architecture Taste (FAT), London;
Andreas Hild of Hild und K Architekten,
Munich; and Alejandro Zaera-Polo of Foreign
Office Architects, London.
Systematic account using numerous
international examples
New technologies, ornament types,
finishing methods and applications

The building shell – functional, efficient and aesthetic
The building shell is the interface with the outside
world: it offers protection and at the same
time represents its owners or occupants. But
what are the criteria for choosing a specific
shell? Why is a particular material used on a
particular undercoat? The second volume of
the SCALE series, Enclose | Build, is not about
the curtain, the dressing of the facade that
surrounds a building, but rather on a causal
level about the exterior termination of a building,
the wall, the facade, which can be made
of various materials, surfaces and achieves
different design effects.
The book shows the conditions under which
certain constructions can be employed and
why; what criteria such as construction costs,
issues of sustainability, of energy efficiency, of
assembly or of insulation or protection against
moisture can also influence the choice of a
system. In addition to classical constructions,
Enclose | Build offers a look at future developments.
How will the facade evolve as an interface
for information? What do viable concepts
for environmentally active, energy-efficient
building shells look like? This book is an indispensable
tool for every architect and planner.

A planning guide for building-integrated photovoltaics
As a critical component in the mix of regenerative
energies, photovoltaics help slow the
progress of climate change and furnish the
earth with a long-term and affordable supply
of energy. They are fascinating, with their
ability to produce electricity seemingly from
“nothing”, silently, cleanly, and virtually maintenance-free.
As a building-integrated technology,
photovoltaics have their ideal point of
use precisely where electricity is needed and
utilize existing spaces and wiring.
Yet the scale of current applications of photovoltaics
still lags far behind their potential,
despite the fact that manufacturers already
offer a wide range of different technologies
and products. The principal culprits are design
and constructional problems as well as
issues related to planning law and building
regulations.
This volume in the DETAIL Practice series is an
illustrated guide to the technical, design, and
constructional aspects of integrating solar
plants into buildings. The chapter on building
law, a glossary, and additional sources and
directories point the way for further study.
Impeccably realized example projects round
out the book with demonstrations of the various
options for installing photovoltaics on
roofs and facades.

A comprehensive manual on renovating, remodeling and
rebuilding interiors
Sports stadiums, airports, theaters, museums
– it falls to very few architects to tackle spectacular
building tasks like these. The everyday
work of most architects is more often
focused on “manageable” projects like the
renovation, remodeling, or rebuilding of
single- and multi-family houses, schools and
offices. Whatever the nature of the building
task, interior construction is always a significant
design and qualitative challenge that
calls for highly detailed technical expertise.
After all, it affects the realm that will be
brought to life and utilized by the user when
the task is finished, and whose aesthetic and
functional service-ability will be put to the
test each and every day.
The Interiors Construction Manual supports
planners in their daily work as a practical
planning aid and reference work with the relevant
standards, guidelines, reference details
and constructional solutions, all illustrated by
built example projects. It brings together the
crucial facts on all aspects of interior construction
and presents the key fundamentals
of building physics, fire pro-tection, interior
construction systems and openings. In addition,
it offers concrete tips on integrated planning
approaches, energy and sustainability
issues, materials used in interior construction,
hazardous substances and dealing with
building services and light planning.

All the colors you need
Dealing with color is a complex subject: influenced
by standards, fashions and trends,
we derive our ideas and concepts from color
theories, intuition and personal preferences.
The color swatches and systems for describing
color common today are based on purely
quantitative principles and include well over
1,500 colors. So how do we choose a particular
color?
More than ten years ago, the color chemist
Katrin Trautwein established a company for
manufacturing fine paints, starting out from
Le Corbusier’s color palette. She now has
more than 900 recipes for paint from which
she has proposed – based on her work with
architects, designers and conservators – a
selection of 128 colors that produce pleasant
results on their own and also combine well.
Each color is presented with a sample; their
potential uses and significance are also discussed.
Katrin Trautwein has lectured throughout the
world on how to approach colors, given seminars,
given expert opinions, advised architects,
taught painters and worked as a restorer.

How digital technology is changing architectural design
Today’s explosive developments in digital
technology have also affected architecture
and the urban landscape. The new possibilities
opened up by digital simulation have
led to an increasingly strategic approach to
planning, an approach based on generating
scenarios, which thus represents a radical
departure from traditional planning. From
the preliminary sketch all the way to the production
of individual building components,
digital tools offer new possibilities that were
still inconceivable just a few years ago.
This volume provides a profound introduction
to the important role of digital technologies
in architectural design and related fields.
In four chapters, the author systematically
examines the influence of digital culture
on architecture but also on the urban landscape
as well as product design. The relationship
of digital architecture to the city
is also an important focus.
A groundbreaking introduction to one of
the most complex and important fields
in architecture and urban planning
The author, a teacher of architectural
history and theory at Harvard University
Graduate School of Design, is an internationally
recognized authority in the field

Material performance and design strategies
The approach of Informing Architecture by
Materiality opens the way to an innovative use
of materials in the design professions. Taking
material qualities and properties such as texture,
elasticity, transparency and fluidity as a
point of departure, the concept described and
employed here transcends the conventional
definitions of building materials. Instead, the
focus is on a multitude of material operations,
like folding and bending, carving and cutting,
weaving and knitting, mirroring and screening.
The featured design strategies and methods
address established and “new” materials
alike. They are applied both to the scale of the
detail and the entire building. The examples
comprise prototype structures as well as
large building projects.
Nine chapters deal with surfaces and layers,
joints and juctions, weaving and texturing,
nanoscale transformations, responsiveness,
the integration of ephemeral factors like wind
and light as well as material collections providing
professional resources. Written by renowned
experts in this field, the book features
many examples from international contemporary
architecture.
The introductory part provides the conceptual
background, while a final chapter describes
consequences for pressing issues of today,
like sustainability or life cycle assessment.

Water as an element in architecture
Water has been an important topic in architecture
and urban planning for years. The
theme of Building with Water is the use of
water in architecture. It presents buildings
that explicitly refer to water in their design
and form. It establishes a typology of building
by the water: residential buildings, transportation
and industrial buildings, buildings
for culture and leisure. Classic examples of
building by, in, or on the water serve as introductions:
for example, the Château de
Chenonceaux on the Loire, Falling Water in
Pennsylvania by Frank Lloyd Wright and the
Salk Institute in La Jolla, California,
by Louis I. Kahn. Organized according to their
locations by a river, lake, or the sea, some
twenty international projects are presented.
The authors’ concern is not showing luxurious
buildings in privileged locations but rather
presenting projects that seriously grapple
with the main criterion of the location –
namely, water – in an ecologically sustainable
way and respond to it with their design.

Small is beautiful
With specific concepts for the use of
small spaces
Offers sample projects and documents
them thoroughly
Shelters, kiosks, snack bars, market stalls,
bus stops, telephone booths, toilets, advertising
columns, ticket booths, mobile tents
or housing units, emergency shelters, tourist
information booths – this list of small, autonomously
functioning buildings could be expanded
almost infinitely. Small buildings
shape our daily lives; they are found at the
nearest street corner; they are present and
indispensable, but as architecture they
attract our attention only rarely. Yet these
small structures occupy a definite place in
the infrastructure of the city. Rather than focusing
on the large attractions of architecture,
architects find many potential ways to ensure
the quality of everyday design hidden in these
small, sometimes charming necessities.
This volume in the IN DETAIL series spans the
arc between architecture and product design,
since not infrequently small buildings are located
precisely in the area of tension between
these two professions, and their successful
realization is evident in the details of their
construction.

Extraordinary portrait: the Olgiati residence and studio
in Flims
The Olgiati’s family estate is located in the
historical town center of Flims. Rudolf Olgiati
(1910 – 1995) purchased the property, known
as “Dado”, in 1930 and throughout his life used
it to realize his architectural thoughts and
ideas. Today, Valerio Olgiati is living in his father’s
house, and in 2008 he set up his muchadmired
architectural firm on the former site
of the barn. This publication portrays the life
and work of both architects using the example
of the house and studio – that is, through the
transformations they have undergone at the
hands of their residents over a period of nearly
eighty years. It shows personal furniture
and objects, the individual layout and design
of the spaces and hence the penchants and
attitudes of the two architects.
At the same time this unusual portrait documents
not only the relationship between
father and son but also the characters of
two generations and their understanding
of architecture and aesthetics.
Valerio Olgiati has worked as an architect
in Los Angeles, Zurich and, since 2008, in
Flims. He has been a visiting professor at
the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
in Zurich, the AA in London, and at Cornell
University in Ithaca, New York. Since 2002
he has been professor at the Accademia di

2009 he has held the Kenzo Tange Chair at
Harvard. The unmistakable straight lines and
independence of his buildings have brought
him international attention.

Michele Arnaboldi, an architect from Ticino,
who has worked for Luigi Snozzi, among
others, founded his own firm in Locarno in
1995. He has made his reputation above all
with residential architecture. He did, however,
also attract attention when his design
in collaboration with Raffaele Cavadini and
Albert Speer und Partner won the international
competition for the design of the Expo
2000 grounds in Hanover.
This volume documents thirty-five of Arnaboldi’s
projects, primarily residences in Switzerland
and Italy but also public buildings
such as the new cultural center in Lugano, the
sports center in Tenero, La Carità hospital in
Lugano, and the pavilion for the Locarno film
festival. Two essays and an interview with
Michele Arnaboldi provide deeper insight into
his attitude towards design.

Urbanized landscapes: new relationships between
landscape and city
With an essay by Aaron Betsky
With 450 illustrations showing specific
works by one of the Netherlands’ leading
urban planning offices
Palmbout Urban Landscapes, founded in
1990, is now one of the leading urban planning
offices in the Netherlands. It exemplifies
current practices of urban planning in
that country. Its approach is characterized
by a constant search for a new relationship
between urban planning, architecture and
landscape architecture. In this process of
experimentation, Palmbout Urban Landscapes
has established a profile not only in
the field of the relationship between urban
planning and architecture but above all in
terms of mutual interactions between urban
planning, analysis and design of landscape
and infrastructure.
The book documents some fifteen projects
organized into six thematic blocks, including
such extensive projects as Amsterdam Ijburg,
a design for an urban extension to Amsterdam
with a total area of 450 hectares, 18,000
residences, 100,000 square meters of office
space, 30,000 square meters of stores and
other facilities, and Maastricht Belvedere,
a restructuring of 280 hectares of a former
industrial site with 4,000 residences, 100,000
square meters of office space, parking lots
and a vehicle bridge.

A substantial overview of the leading trends in
ecological urban development in Europe
With essays by Piet Oudolf, Marc Treib and
Udo Weilacher
A visually fascinating reference book, with
numerous, mostly large-format color
illustrations
Accompanies an exhibition at the German
Architecture Museum in the Palm Garden
in Frankfurt am Main
The rediscovery of the city that has been evident
recently has by no means superseded
the human desire for nature. On the contrary,
the goal has been finding urban solutions
that do justice to these growing needs and
do so in ways that meet the requirements
for design, ecology, sociology, and economy.
This publica-tion addresses the subject of
designing inner-city spaces. It documents
twenty recently realized examples in Europe,
most of which feature greenery, designed
by international landscape architects such
as Gustafson Porter, Field Operations, Michel
Desvigne, Gross.Max, Latz + Partner, and West
8. The projects, built between 2004 and 2010,
range from private urban gardens by way of
squares, streets, and promenades to largescale
projects such as the revitalization of
riverside areas or master plans for the green
spaces of entire cities. Urban greenery is an
important contribution to ecological urban
development. The projects documented offer
examples of how this can succeed using the
most modern materials and technologies.

Agriculture
Agricultural areas in industrial and urban
regions will in the future no longer be seen
merely as functional space but rather as
“islands of the beautiful and the useful.”
In the extremely densely built Ruhr region,
two projects explore the space between
postindustrial forest landscape and useful
agricultural landscape: the Industrial Forest
of Rhine-Elbe and the Ornamental Farm of
Mechtenberg. In Mechtenberg, Paolo Bürgi,
the renowned landscape architect from the
Ticino, has designed sequential interventions
to accompany the seasonal cycle of land on
the grain fields. Starting from these fascinating
examples, the book presents exemplary
concepts for the cooperation of landscape
architecture, agriculture and Land Art.

The successful transformation of an entire region
through landscape architecture, art and culture
Even in an international context, the Emscher
Landscape Park represents the most significant
effort to date to use landscape architecture
to revitalize a former industrial region. It
is remarkable for the sheer variety of its built
projects as well as the caliber of its participants,
including Peter Latz, Norman Foster,
Jörg Schlaich, Frei Otto, Rem Koolhaas, Henri
Bava, Michel Desvigne, Richard Serra and
others. The roughly thirty most important
parks, gardens, landmarks, installations,
bridges, industrial follow-up projects, etc.
have been newly photographed, expertly described,
and contextualized. With its 450 km²,
the Emscher Landscape park encompasses a
substantial portion of the Ruhr district, which

Innovation incounters tradition
Thomas Feichtner (b. 1970) is an Austrian
designer who, after considerable successes
in the field of industrial design, has recently
begun to turn heads again with his unusual
approach to design. His recent work in the
area of furniture and object design is positioned
midway between industry and handicrafts,
mass production and one-of-a-kinds.
This monograph uses sketches, preliminary
models and prototypes to provide a detailed
presentation of his experimental working
methods. With texts by Peter Noever, Bernhard
E. Bürdek, Shonquis Moreno, Lilli Hollein and
Michael Hausenblas.
Feichtner lives and works in Linz; since October
2009, he has held a design chair at the
Muthesius Kunsthoch-schule (Muthesius
Academy of Fine Arts and Design) in Kiel.

Learning to draw, learning to communicate ideas
With a new conceptual system that makes
it easier to communicate about the
process of drawing and its results
With statements and original drawings by
Alfredo Häberli, Niklaus Troxler, Peter
Zumthor, and many more
Bibliophile edition
Lines are thoughts that can be drawn and are
often more precise than words. Only ideas
that can be drawn can be translated into a
design. 1D, the “first dimension”, is thus the
point of departure for the design process both
in training and in professional practice. This
publication focuses on the learning and function
of drawing. Drawing assignments created
for the Basel School of Design are commented
on based on a conceptual system in the form
of a “network card.” On the one hand, this
shows the quality of the drawings; on the
other hand, it provides the vocabulary necessary
to communicate about the complex
process of drawing – with the goal of ever
better results.
An introductory essay addresses drawing as
a process of perception and realization. The
book is rounded out by statements from renowned
designers, each accompanied by an
original drawing, on the significance of
drawing to their work.

A unique synthesis of graphic design and lyrics,
typography and sound
Graphic designers love music. This is attested
not least by the tremendous enthusiasm that
readers of the typography magazine Slanted
bring to its Typo Lyrics column, in which designers
interpret music in entirely new ways
with the help of fonts. For this publication of
the same name, celebrated graphic designers
like Fons Hickmann as well as talented young
designers from all over the world have taken
song lyrics and used them as the inspiration
for innovative font designs. The result is a collection
of fascinating visuals – typographic
images that present contemporary fonts a
little bit differently. The extraordinary interplay
of type design and music brings the fonts
to life and practically sets them dancing. In
contrast to classical pattern books and font
fans, this volume provides a special, more
emotional experience of typography and illustrates
the great expressive potential of typefaces.
On analogy with the traditional classification
of fonts, the book is organized into eleven
chapters, each of which treats a particular
font family and song lyrics from a particular
musical style.
An unusual presentation of contemporary
fonts
With visuals prepared specially for this
publication by selected graphic designers
A source of inspiration for graphic
designers, typeface enthusiasts and

Design Thinking in business strategies
Today’s society is making great leaps in its
effort to obtain ever more and ever more specific
know-how in various specialties, with the
consequence that the structures of today’s
companies are becoming increasingly complex.
This in turn leads to problems at the
points of interface, which calls for a comprehensive
approach to solutions.
Creating Desired Futures defines design as a
creative, analytical method to develop and
explore alternative solutions to complex problems,
and it shows that design is particularly
well suited to the business world’s current
need for innovative strategies.
In 24 essays by designers, architects and representatives
of large companies such as Nike
and Shell, the book shows how such a designbased
approach can help define, assess and
solve business problems. It presents not only
specific strategies from actual practice but
also innovative approaches from the world of
corporate consulting. Essays by researchers
and teachers discuss theoretical aspects of
the subject “Design Thinking.”
