FROM ‘YES’ TO ‘I DO’

YOUR GUIDE TO A JOYFUL WEDDING PLANNING JOURNEY

6

Congratulations on your engagement, lovebirds! What an exciting chapter you are about to embark on! For some couples,

planning a wedding is exhilarating and fun, while others find it stressful and overwhelming. The key to making sure that you

enjoy the lead-up to your big day—is getting organised. Give yourself enough time to save, plan and recruit the right team

to help you create the wedding of your dreams.

Instagram, Pinterest, or bridal websites but always stay

true to your personality, preferences and unique style.

3. Draw up a budget—and stick to it

Talking money matters may feel unromantic but

running the wedding budget gauntlet is great training

for handling your finances together as a married

couple. Being disciplined about sticking to your

budget provides some necessary boundaries as

wedding costs can easily spiral out of control and

here’s some encouragement for you: honouring your

budget can be surprisingly satisfying! You’ll find some

more guidance on how to draw up your wedding

budgets in our Wedding Budget Bliss article.

Pose-a-Rosey Photography

Here are 13 of our top tips to kickstart your wedding

planning journey:

1. Take time to celebrate being engaged

Don’t rush through your engagement in your haste to

dive headfirst into planning your wedding. This stage

of your relationship deserves to be cherished. Give

yourselves permission to hide out, just the two of you,

dreaming and building anticipation for married life

together. If you want to, host a party with your

favourites people. I also encourage you to consider

documenting your newly engaged status with a photo

shoot. This is a milestone you’ll want to remember

forever.

2. Align your overall wedding vision together

Sit down together and paint a picture of what your

ideal wedding looks like. Don’t get too bogged down

by the nitty gritty details at this stage but do agree on

what your most—and least—important priorities are.

List the elements that are most important to you and

be willing to make some compromises on the rest.

Gather ideas and inspiration from sources such as

ESTABLISH A COMMUNICATION PLAN

Vix Photography

Set up regular check-ins with your partner, wedding

planner and/or key family members to ensure

everyone is on the same page. Clear

communication helps prevent misunderstandings

and keeps the planning process smooth.

4. Get organised with our Wedding Blueprint

Stay on top of your wedding preparations by getting

your thoughts, ideas, lists, and budgets organised in a

single spot! To assist you with this, Marriage Meander

has developed a Wedding Planning Blueprint, which

includes a 12-month Countdown Checklist. Sign up for

our email list and you’ll receive a dose of weekly

wedding planning wisdom and some awesome (free)

wedding planning printables to help you stay on track

and tackle tasks like a pro.

5. Assemble your wedding squad sensibly

Selecting your wedding party is more than just a

formality—these individuals will be your closest allies

throughout the planning process and on your big day.

Think carefully about who you want by your side,

balancing emotional support with practical

assistance. Consider their capacity to help with prewedding

tasks and their ongoing role in your life as a

married couple. Consider their capacity to provide the

support you require in the lead-up to your wedding

and whether they are likely to remain significant role

players in your married life ahead.

8. Why a wedding planner could be your best decision

Don’t underestimate the value that a wedding

coordinator can add to your special day. A

professional planner can help you avoid making

costly mistakes, guide you in your selection of flowers

and décor, and stay on top of deadlines. Even if you

plan to handle most of your wedding preparations

yourself, it's advisable to think about hiring a day-of

coordinator. They can take care of all the nitty gritty

details on your big day so that you can relax into your

role as Bride! If you're looking for recommendations,

we have some fantastic planners in our Marriage

Meander portfolio.

6. Curate your guest list

It is important to iron out how many guests you will be

inviting to your wedding before you start setting up

site visits with potential wedding venues. Chat to your

other half and key family members to put together a

wish list of invitees. Once you have a draft guest list

outlining all potential invitees, it’s time to start the

culling process and make decisions about whether to

include ‘Plus Ones’, work colleagues, or children.

8

May I gently remind you that this is your wedding.

Don’t feel pressured to invite guests based on others’

expectations. If you’ve always wanted a humdinger of

a thrash with 200 guests (and you can afford it

without going into debt) then have at it! But if a small,

intimate gathering with your nearest and dearest is

your vibe, then please do that.

7. Lock in your date and venue early

Popular dates and venues can get booked at least a

year in advance so picking a date and should be one

of the earliest tasks on your To Do list. Should you pick

your date or venue first? It depends. If you have a fixed

date, be ready to flex on venue choices because

popular venues book up quickly. But if you've found the

perfect venue, choose a few potential dates to

increase your chances of securing it.

DELEGATE WISELY

Don’t hesitate to delegate tasks to trusted friends,

family, or your wedding party. Assign speciffc roles and

responsibilities to those who are eager to help. This will

reduce your stress and workload so that you can enjoy

the planning process.

9. When choosing your suppliers, prioritise comfort and

compatibility

When selecting service providers, look beyond their

expertise and professionalism—ensure you feel at

ease with them, too. You'll be spending a lot of time

with these professionals, so it's crucial that you share a

comfortable rapport. Arrange an informal meeting or

video call to get to know them better and see if their

personality aligns with your vision. A good vendor

relationship can significantly reduce stress and

enhance your overall wedding experience.

10. Read the fine print

Before you put pen to paper on any contracts, be sure

to read and understand all the particulars. This

includes crucial information such as dates, venue,

times, deposits, additional charges, colour choices,

quantities, and cancellation policies, among others. It's

essential that every service is accurately outlined in

your contract to ensure both parties are on the same

page. A contract should outline what happens

if either party cancels, not just the client. Carefully

read policies pertaining to a change in the scope of

the service provided, which may result in the rate

being revised. This is standard practice in the wedding

industry but the onus is on you to familiarise yourself

with each supplier’s terms and conditions. For

instance, if your catering estimate is based on a

minimum of 100 guests, but your final count ends up

being 60 guests, this could impact the per-head

catering cost.

DISCOVER YOUR DREAM TEAM AT

‘LOVE ON THE LAWN’

Eliminating the stress of ffnding the right vendors can

make a world of diMerence in your wedding planning

journey. That’s why Marriage Meander hosts ‘Love on

the Lawn’—our annual wedding showcase that brings

together some of KZN’s ffnest suppliers in one

convenient location. This event lets you connect with

top-notch professionals, making it easier to plan all the

key elements of your wedding all in one day.

Troy Bishop Photography

11. Make time to connect with your partner away from

the wedding craziness

As your wedding day approaches, it’s easy to get lost

in the chaos of planning. Make sure to carve out

special moments for just the two of you, away from

the wedding hustle. Use this time to reconnect and

enjoy each other’s company without the stress of

wedding details. If possible, take a few days off work

before the big day to unwind, address any last-minute

details, and indulge in some self-care, such as a

relaxing massage or a spa day. These moments will

help you stay grounded and remind you of the joy and

excitement of your upcoming celebration.

12. Your wedding day is a beautiful start, not the end-all

I know you want your wedding day to be sensational

but don’t lose sight of the fact that the real celebration

begins after the wedding. Embrace the quirks and

hiccups that are bound to unfold on your wedding

day; they're the first brushstrokes on your newlywed

canvas! The real treasure is the life you’re building

together.

13. Delegate post-Wedding responsibilities

If you're jetting off on your honeymoon right after the

wedding, designate friends or family to handle returns

of rented items like suits, décor, and vehicles. Don't

forget to send your dress for cleaning as soon as

possible. Also, ensure someone is taking care of your

pets, plants, and home chores, so you can relax and

savour every honeymoon moment!

WEDDING BUDGET BLISS

BALANCING YOUR VISION WITH YOUR WALLET

10

Money often gets a bad rap in relationships, but it doesn’t have to be a source of conflict. In reality, a well-managed budget

can set the stage for a stress-free wedding and a prosperous future together. As you embark on this exciting journey

toward your wedding day, remember that aligning your dream celebrations with your financial reality is crucial. While it

might seem a bit unromantic, starting with a clear budget will help you avoid financial stress and ensure a smooth

planning process.

Here are our tips to balance your dream wedding with a

practical budget:

1. Set your budget first

Before diving into venue tours or supplier bookings,

establish your budget. This step is essential for

ensuring your wedding dreams align with your

financial reality. By setting a budget early, you gain

control over your spending and avoid starting your

marriage in debt. A beautiful wedding is possible

within any budget—it’s all about thoughtful planning,

clear communication, and making smart choices.

2. Start saving early

With couples shouldering a larger share of wedding

costs than ever before, it’s wise to begin saving as

soon as you get engaged. The sooner you start setting

money aside, the more likely you are to reach your

financial goals and avoid debt. Even small, regular

contributions to your wedding fund can add up,

helping you achieve your dream day without financial

strain.

3. Define your priorities together

Discuss with your partner what aspects of the

wedding are most important to each of you. For

example, if you both love food, allocate more of your

budget to catering. Alternatively, if photography or

entertainment is your priority, adjust your spending

accordingly. Make a list of your top three priorities and

areas where you’re willing to compromise. This will

help you manage your budget more effectively and

ensure you’re both happy with the outcome.

4. Have the ‘money talk’ with your family

While it might feel uncomfortable, discussing financial

contributions with your families can prevent

misunderstandings and disappointment later. Talk to

both sets of parents about their potential involvement

and your budget. Even if they aren’t able to contribute

financially, knowing their stance can help you plan

more effectively. Keep in mind that family

expectations and financial realities may differ, so clear

communication is key.

CUTTING COSTS

Vix Photography

Of course, one of the simplest ways to cut costs is

to limit your guest list. But if having lots of people

celebrating your big day is your number one

wedding wish, you’ll need to get creative with other

aspects of your budget.

5. Save for your future together

Don’t let wedding expenses derail your plans for the

future. Start budgeting for long-term goals, such as

purchasing your first home or other significant

investments. By planning beyond the wedding, you’ll

avoid the common trap of overspending and ensure a

solid financial foundation for your life together.

6. Stay focused on what matters

Your wedding is a celebration of your love and

commitment, shared with the important people in

your lives. While it’s tempting to focus on creating

Instagram-worthy moments, remember that the day

is about you and your partner. Keep your priorities in

check and stay true to what really matters to you

both. This mindset will make your wedding day—and

your marriage—more meaningful and enjoyable.

WEDDING BUDGET BREAKDOWN

Creating a wedding budget is a crucial first step in your planning process. It’s like

drawing the roadmap for your entire celebration. Before making decisions, figure

out your spending limit to guide your planning effectively.

Here’s an example of how a budget might be allocated for a wedding with

around 100 guests and a total budget of R250,000. Remember, every wedding is

unique so depending on the venue and suppliers you have chosen, this

breakdown may look quite different for you.

Category Percentage Spend

Venue 22% R55,000

Catering & Cake 25% R62,500

Décor & Flowers 15% R30,000

Photography & Videography 12% R30,000

Attire 10% R25,000

Music & Entertainment 7% R17,500

Hair & Makeup 3% R7,500

Marriage Officer & Legal 2% R5,000

Stationery 2% R6,000

Wedding Coordinator 2% R6,000

Total 100% R250,000

Discuss with your partner which areas are worth splurging on and where you can

make adjustments. Remember, it’s your day so make it fit your vision and your

budget.

UNDERSTANDING

YOUR MARRIAGE

CONTRACT

LAYING THE LEGAL GROUNDWORK FOR YOUR FUTURE

As you prepare for your big day, don’t overlook the importance of planning for

the legal aspects of your marriage. Sorting out your matrimonial regime a few

months before you tie the knot is essential—your marriage officer will need to see

your Antenuptial Contract (ANC) signed by yourselves and executed by the

Notary Public or a letter from your Notary Public confirming that you have

entered into an ANC prior to date of marriage.

14

Making the registraon of

your Antenupal Contract

a quick and smooth process

is just one of the many ways

we can help you.

Garth Burne: 031 573 1773

info@burneandburne.co.za

www.burneandburne.co.za

Stephen Michael

In this guide, we’ll cover the three main matrimonial regimes in South Africa,

highlighting how each one can affect your financial and legal life together. With a

bit of legal know-how and early preparation, you can begin your marriage with

clarity and peace of mind, setting a strong foundation for the years ahead.

1. Marriage in community of property

If you don’t sign an Antenuptial Contract (ANC) before your wedding, you will

automatically be married in community of property. This means that all

assets owned by either spouse before and during the marriage will be

equally shared. For example, even if one spouse owned a house before the

marriage, the other spouse automatically becomes a joint owner of that

property, regardless of whether their name is on the

title deed. Likewise, any debts either of you owe will

become joint debts, shared equally between both

spouses. This joint estate includes all assets and

liabilities, affecting your ability to conduct certain

transactions, such as buying or selling property or

entering into contracts independently.

2. Marriage out of community of property

—without accrual

If you sign an ANC that excludes the accrual system,

it keeps each spouse’s assets and liabilities entirely

separate. In other words, “what is yours is yours, and

what is mine is mine.” You retain full control over your

personal assets and debts, just as you did before

marriage, without any sharing between you and

your spouse.

3. Marriage out of community of property—with accrual

The accrual system was designed to ensure fair

sharing of assets acquired through joint efforts during

the marriage. With this regime, each spouse keeps

separate estates and remains solely responsible for

their own debts throughout the marriage. However,

upon dissolution of the marriage (whether through

divorce or death), the spouse with the smaller accrual

in their estate has a claim to half the difference

between the two accruals. This ensures a fair division

of wealth created during the marriage while

maintaining separate financial responsibility.

If you wish to be married out of community of property,

you must sign your Antenuptial Contract before your

wedding day. Only a Notary Public can execute this

contract, which will then be officially registered with the

Deeds Office. Without an Antenuptial Contract, you will

automatically be married in community of property.

Changing your marital regime after marriage can be both

complex and expensive, so it’s essential to do your

research and seek sound legal advice beforehand. This

way, you can make an informed choice that best aligns

with your vision for your marriage.

Remember, an ANC isn’t about planning for separation; it’s

about preparing for a life together. This agreement

considers the ups and downs that may come along in

your journey, helping you both feel secure as you navigate

life’s changes.

The legal side of marriage may seem intimidating, but it

doesn’t have to be. With the right legal guidance, you can

feel excited and ready to begin your marriage on strong,

united ground.

Pose-a-Rosey Photography

YOUR LOVE STORY,

YOUR CEREMONY

MAKE YOUR “I DO’S” A REFLECTION OF YOU

16

Imagine your wedding day as a maypole (stick with me,

it’ll make sense shortly). All the elements that form part of

it—the flowers, the food, the music, the cake, the speeches,

the party—are magnificent ribbons that dance around,

catching the light. If your wedding day is a maypole, your

ceremony is the wooden pole, the central pillar at the

heart of everything.

Traditionally, a ceremony has followed a certain script,

hitting the important notes of the walk down the aisle (as

everyone’s hearts become glow-worms in their chests), a

welcome, readings, the vows, an exchange of rings, the

kiss (always the kiss!), the “I now pronounce you...”, and

the walk back down the aisle, hand in newly ringed hand.

Here’s the exhilarating thing, though: this is just a guide.

While marriage is an ancient tradition, and there’s

something profound and beautiful about being part of a

sacred ritual that so many people have chosen before

you, each marriage is as unique as the people within it.

Your ceremony can be a reflection of who you are—as

individuals, as a couple.

Here are our tips to help plan a ceremony that feels

like “you”.

1. Who will hold your day?

Book your marriage officer as soon as possible once

you’ve confirmed your date and venue to make sure

that you find someone who feels like the right fit for

you. Talk to them about how you’d like the day to feel,

your journey as a couple, the kind of life you want to

build together, and how you’d like that to be reflected

in the ceremony.

2. Setting the scene

Once you know where your ceremony will take place,

pin down the details:

• Is there enough space for the couple, bridal party,

photographer and videographer to move around?

• If you include a musician or DJ, where do you want

them to be and will they have access to power?

• Are you reserving seats for parents, grandparents or

the bridal party? Ask someone who knows these

guests to guide them to their allocated spots.

• If you’re doing the legal stuff on the day, make sure

there’s a table large enough for signing the register.

• Is your ceremony outside? Make sure you have a plan

B in case the weather doesn’t get the memo.

3. Timing is everything

Your ceremony should be long enough to feel like it

encapsulates your love story, but short enough to hold

the attention of your guests. The sweet spot? Between

30 to 40 minutes.

4. Phones down, hearts open

If you don’t want people to experience your ceremony

through their screens, have your officiant kindly ask

people to put their phones away before it begins,

noting that the official photographer will capture the

magic so they don’t have to.

5. Make it your own

Don’t be afraid to hold all the usual elements of a

ceremony up to the light and decide if they feel right

to you, and if not, do something different. Talk to your

officiant about weaving your love story into the

Pose-a-Rosey Photography

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

A growing trend that we’re seeing is couples

choosing to ask a friend or family member to

officiate their big day to make it even more

personal. It’s such a beautiful opportunity for them

to weave your love story into the ceremony, as

they’ve witnessed it unfold. Make sure you tell them

exactly what you want out of the ceremony—as

much of an honour as it is to be asked to officiate, it

can be a daunting task for them so it’s helpful if you

give them a bit of a roadmap. If you go this route,

make sure you reach out to a registered marriage

officer to make sure that all the legal requirements

are taken care of before your ceremony, and all the

correct documents are filed at Home Affairs.

workshop a few joint promises

together based on values most

important to your partnership, and

then write separate appreciations

which are a surprise for one

another on the day. If you think

about it, these promises are the

primary reason behind the whole

beautiful day, the kernel of it all –

so make sure you give yourself

plenty of time to write them.

7. The legal stuff

Less romantic, no less important!

Your marriage officer will complete

the marriage register, which will be

signed and witnessed on the day,

issue you with a handwritten SA

marriage certificate and will then

register your marriage with Home

Affairs. Alternatively, if a friend or

family member is marrying you,

you can do the legal stuff

separately and make that its own

moment.

As you begin to select all the shiny

ribbons of your big day, enjoy spending

time thinking about the beautiful

wooden pole you’re tethering them to—

the heart of your day, the culmination

of the journey you’ve travelled together

THE VENUE HUNT

TIPS TO UNCOVERING THE PERFECT SETTING FOR YOUR “I DO”

20

Planning a wedding is like embarking on an epic quest. Among the biggest decisions? Finding a venue that ticks all the

right boxes. With so many incredible spaces out there, it’s easy to feel spoiled for choice (and maybe a little overwhelmed).

But fear not! We’re here to guide you through the maze of possibilities and help you land the perfect spot for your big day.

Grab a cuppa and let’s get cracking…

1. Budget brilliance!

Let’s talk money, honey! Before you get swept away by

elegant country estates or stylish safari destinations,

know your budget inside out. Falling head over heels for

a venue that’s miles out of your price range is a

heartbreak you can avoid. Understanding your budget

before scheduling site visits is crucial—it saves you

from wasting time touring venues that don’t align with

your financial plan. Plus, it helps you focus on realistic

options, giving you the confidence to negotiate and

prioritise what truly matters. Use our budget planner on

page 12 to allocate wisely and keep those spending

temptations in check. A well-planned budget isn’t

restrictive; it’s a roadmap to achieving your dream day

without unnecessary stress.

Bonamanzi Game Reserve | Luca Photography

HOW MUCH SHOULD I SPEND ON MY

VENUE AND FOOD?

Your venue hire and catering should account for

roughly 50% of your total wedding budget. If you ffnd

these costs creeping higher, consider reevaluating your

guest list, selecting a less expensive venue, or

adjusting other budget areas such as decor or

entertainment.

2. Guest list groundwork

It’s simple maths: your guest list size dictates the type

of venue you can afford and the space you'll need. No

one wants a cosy venue that’s packed to the rafters or

a grand hall that feels empty. Nail down your numbers

early, and you’ll sidestep these pitfalls like a pro. Start

by creating a preliminary list of must-invite guests—

close family, best friends, and key people you can’t

imagine celebrating without. Then, add in the ‘nice-tohaves’

like extended family, colleagues, and plus-ones.

Be realistic about your budget and venue capacity,

and don’t be afraid to make cuts if needed. Sending

out ‘save the dates’ early can also help you gauge

who’s likely to attend, giving you a clearer picture for

finalising numbers.

3. Aesthetic alignment

Your wedding venue should speak to your style. A

venue with built-in personality and features you love—

think exposed brick walls, statement chandeliers, or

lush gardens—can save you a bundle on décor, as it

sets the tone without extra effort. However, if the

venue's design clashes with your vision, you may end

up spending more to cover or transform it with draping,

lighting, or custom décor. On the flip side, while a blank

canvas venue or marquee offers endless creative

freedom, the cost of adding everything from

furnishings to ambient lighting can quickly add up.

Choose wisely to balance your aesthetic dreams with

your budget.

4. Guest comfort is important

Yes, your wedding day is all about you two, but it’s

important to keep your guests’ comfort in mind too!

Happy guests = a happy wedding. Think about things

like parking, whether elderly guests will have easy

access, and if your venue has climate control (fans, air

conditioning and heaters) for comfort. If you're hosting

a destination wedding, ensure there are ample

accommodation options nearby and consider shuttle

services for transport ease. A little extra thought can go

a long way in ensuring everyone is comfortable,

relaxed, and ready to celebrate with you

5. Ceremony specifics

When considering your wedding venue, enquire about

the available ceremony locations. While many venues

conveniently have a chapel on the premises, it's

essential to clarify whether this is the case. If not, it's

wise to anticipate potential additional costs. In the

absence of an on-site chapel, you may consider

erecting a marquee or a stretch tent on the property.

However, always ensure that the venue permits such

arrangements. Alternatively, you might opt for an

offsite chapel for your ceremony, which could involve

additional venue hire fees. Clarifying these details will

help you make a well-informed decision about your

venue.

Clearwater Farm

6. Weather watch

“We would love the weather to surprise us on our

wedding day” — said No One Ever! If you are planning

an outdoor ceremony, it's absolutely crucial to have a

22 Eden Lassie | Courtney Dale Photography

contingency plan for inclement weather. This might

involve renting a tent or securing a provisional

reservation for an indoor alternative. When discussing

this with your venue, enquire about the measures they

recommend for addressing sweltering heat, chilly

conditions, gusty winds, or unexpected rain showers.

Do they offer amenities like air conditioners, heaters,

umbrellas, or fans? Or will you need to arrange and

incur additional costs for these items. After all, nobody

wants to shiver or sweat excessively on their special

day!

7. Getting-ready suites

The getting-ready moments of your wedding are filled

with photos that you'll treasure forever, from candid

shots of you and your bridal party to the final touches

of your makeup and gown. That's why it's so important

to have a spacious, stylish, and well-lit area to prep

and primp. If your venue doesn't offer this, consider

finding a nearby spot to avoid unnecessary travel on

your big day. And don't forget the groom and his

crew—they need their own space too! A comfortable,

aesthetically pleasing space for both of you will make

those pre-wedding photos even more memorable.

8. Explore cost-saving opportunities: mid-week and

off-season rates

Consider this money-saving tip: some venues offer

discounted rates for mid-week or off-season

reservations. If you're flexible with your wedding date,

these options can help you reduce costs significantly.

Not only can you save money, but you might also enjoy

more personalised attention from the venue and

suppliers, as they have fewer bookings during these

times. It's worth asking about these opportunities when

you first enquire about availability

WHY CAN’T I USE MY OWN

CATERING COMPANY?

When it comes to catering, many venues prefer to

keep things in-house. This means you may not have the

option to bring in your own catering team. For venues

with in-house catering, this ensures consistency in food

quality and service, while also maintaining control over

the dining experience. Other venues, however, may

oMer a set list of recommended caterers that you can

choose from, giving you a bit more ‘exibility. Very few

venues permit outside catering, because they see the

food as an extension of their brand and want to uphold

a certain standard. Plus, managing the logistics of an

unfamiliar catering team using their kitchen space can

be challenging for the venue.

and consider how other events may impact your

celebration. Additionally, enquire about noise levels if

there are multiple events happening and make sure

the venue has adequate facilities to manage large

crowds.

10. Preferred vendors

Some venues provide recommendations to help you

build your dream team, while others require you to use

their approved suppliers. If your venue has a set list of

preferred vendors, make sure you understand their

policies—especially when it comes to catering. Venues

without in-house catering often have a list of trusted

caterers they work with, which can simplify logistics

and ensure consistency in service.

9. Exclusive use, or will you be sharing the space?

Is your venue exclusively for your use, or will other

events be happening simultaneously? If you’ve chosen

a popular venue, you might find that it’s hosting more

than one event on your wedding day. This can affect

the atmosphere, especially in shared spaces like

bathrooms, bars, and outdoor areas. To avoid

unwanted distractions, ask about exclusive use options

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR

VENUE SITE VISITS

WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER

Visiting potential wedding venues is more than just a tick-box exercise—it’s your chance to see each space in action and

envision your big day coming to life. But to truly make the most of these visits, a little strategy goes a long way. From

knowing what to ask to capturing key details, a well-planned site visit ensures you walk away with the insights you need to

make an informed decision. Here's how to turn each venue tour into a goldmine of useful information!

Before

26

1. Sort your budget and guest list first: We’ve said it before

but it bears repeating: Don’t book site visits with your

shortlisted venues until you have ironed out your

budget and guest count. This ensures you’re only

visiting venues that are within your reach.

2. Pick your ideal date(s) and whether you can be flexible:

Decide on your preferred date or at least a time of year.

If you’re in love with a venue, consider whether you can

be flexible on the date to make it work

3. Prepare your must-ask questions: Print out your list of

questions to ask during the visit. This ensures you cover

all the bases and don’t forget any important details.

4. Book your tour in advance: Please do not just show up

unannounced—schedule a site visit with the venue. This

shows respect for their time and gives you the best

chance of getting all the answers you need.

5. Research venue reviews: Before your visit, read online

reviews and testimonials. These can highlight potential

issues or hidden gems that may not be obvious during

the tour.

6. Time your visit strategically: If possible, try to visit the

venue around the same time of day as your wedding.

This helps you see the venue in similar lighting and get a

better sense of the atmosphere.

The Lazy Moose

During

1. Visualise your dream day: As you tour the venue, try to picture how your big

day will unfold in each space. Does it give you the vibe and atmosphere you're

after? Sometimes, it’s the feeling of a place that matters most!

2. Take photos and videos: Document all the spaces you’re considering. These

shots will help you remember how everything was laid out—and where those

little details, like plugs, pillars or focal points, are located.

3. Check out your bad weather backup plan: Even if you're planning for an

outdoor ceremony, take a good look at the indoor (Plan B) option, and whether

it fits your vibe check.

Your dream wedding deserves a

breathtaking setting. Whether it's an

intimate ceremony under our majestic

Chestnut tree, a chic indoor celebration, or

a grand affair on our marquee site, we

have the perfect setting. Harrington House

offers versatility and a dedicated team to

support you every step of the way.

4. Ask all your questions and take notes. Trust us, you won’t remember everything

from the tour, so make sure to jot down all the answers. This is the time to clarify

what’s included, what’s not, and what’s allowed.

5. Dress for the occasion. Wear comfortable shoes—and if you’re heading outside,

bring a hat and some sunscreen. No one wants to deal with sore feet or

sunburn during a venue tour!

6. Observe the amenities and facilities: Pay attention to

things like bathrooms, parking spaces, and the

availability of a bridal suite or prep area. These small

details can make a big difference on the day.

7. Chat with the staff: Take note of how friendly and

accommodating the venue staff are. The people

running your venue will play a key role in your wedding

day, so it’s important to feel like they’re on your side.

After

1. Evaluate your impressions: Sit down together after the

visit and go over your notes. Identify the green lights

(those venues that tick all the boxes) and the red flags

(those that might not be a good fit). If you’ve got

multiple options, weigh up the pros and cons of each.

2. Don’t wait too long to make your decision: Once you’ve

found ‘the one,’ don’t hesitate—secure your dream

venue before it slips away.

3. Think about accommodation early: Look into nearby

accommodation options and either block-book rooms

or share recommendations with your guests well in

advance. You want everyone to have a hassle-free stay

on your big day.

4. Follow up with any remaining questions: After reviewing

your notes, if there’s anything unclear or unanswered,

reach out to the venue coordinator. It’s better to clarify

now than be caught off guard later.

5. Review your budget one last time: Before signing on the

dotted line, revisit your budget to ensure there are no

hidden costs or unexpected add-ons. A quick doublecheck

could save you from future surprises.

With a little prep, a few photos, and a lot of questions, your

venue site visits will go from 'meh' to 'wow'—ensuring you

find the perfect spot for your big day!

A FEAST TO REMEMBER

TOP TIPS FOR FINDING A CATERER WHO UNDERSTANDS YOUR VISION AND BUDGET

Your wedding feast is more than just a meal; it’s a memory in the making! From tantalising canapés to artfully plated

courses, the right caterer can make every bite unforgettable. But how do you choose a culinary collaborator who can bring

your dream menu to life? Consider these questions when picking your wedding catering crew.

40

1. Venue rules and catering flexibility

Before recruiting a chef and finalising your menu, take

note of your venue’s catering policy. Some

establishments require you to use their in-house

kitchen team, while others allow you to bring in your

own caterer. If you have your heart set on a specific

chef or dish, check if your venue is flexible. Some

forward planning here will go a long way to ensuring

your culinary dreams are achievable!

ideas? Share it with your caterer! If you’re dreaming of

unique décor, special garnishes, or custom plating,

keep in mind that these details may affect your overall

cost. Ask your caterer for photos of past weddings to

get a feel for their style and see how they can help

bring your vision to life.

2. Set a realistic budget and stick to it

Before falling in love with menu ideas, set a budget for

your wedding food. Share this budget with your

caterer upfront so they can provide honest feedback

on what’s achievable. Beware of anyone who promises

extravagant options for a suspiciously low price;

quality comes at a cost. The right caterer will work with

your budget, crafting a menu that satisfies both your

taste buds and your wallet.

3. Choose a caterer who radiates calm and confidence

Your wedding caterer should be someone who not

only grasps your vision but also brings a steady,

composed presence to the big day, ensuring that

every dish is timely, beautifully presented and

absolutely delicious.

4. Turn your Pinterest board into a reality

Got a Pinterest board bulging with food presentation

Hamblin’s Catering | Vix Photography

5. Define your dining style

There are many ways to serve a wedding feast, each

offering its own experience. Here are a few styles to

consider:

• Buffet: Guests choose their favourites in a relaxed

setting.

• Plated: Elegant courses are served to each guest.

• Family style / table boards: Shared dishes create a

warm, communal vibe.

• Food stations / cocktail bowl food: Interactive and

flexible for mingling.

• Food truck style: Fun and trendy, perfect for a casual

vibe.

Each style has its perks and quirks, and your catering team

can help you choose the one that suits your wedding

vision best.

6. Share your culinary likes, dislikes & dietary

restrictions

Talk openly with your caterer about your favourite

flavours, dislikes, and any dietary restrictions. This will

ensure a menu that excites your taste buds and

meets any health or allergy needs of your guests. Your

caterer should be able to accommodate these

requests and make the necessary adjustments

without compromising flavour.

7. Confirm dietary restrictions ahead of time

To avoid any last-minute surprises, it’s a great idea to

ask guests in advance if they have dietary

restrictions—whether they are vegetarian, allergic to

shellfish, or other. Even if you’re planning a buffet,

sharing this information with your caterer helps them

balance the menu to suit everyone. Knowing the mix

of dietary needs allows your caterer to create an inclusive spread that’s as

thoughtful as it is delicious.

8. Consider a tasting session

A tasting session is more than just sampling dishes;

it’s your chance to experience your caterer’s skills firsthand. Request a tasting

well ahead of time to experience the flavours and presentation of your

potential menu. You’ll leave the session feeling more confident about your

menu choices and excited for what’s to come.

9. Create a culinary timeline

Timing is everything when it comes to creating a smooth, enjoyable dining

experience at your wedding. Work with your caterer to map out key ‘foodie

moments’ throughout the day, ensuring there’s a rhythm that keeps guests

satisfied without long gaps or rushed courses. For instance, plan to serve

canapés shortly after the ceremony to keep guests content while you’re off

taking photos. For the reception, allow around 15–20 minutes between

courses to maintain energy without the evening dragging on.

Bon appétit! Your dream feast awaits.

A SLICE OF

ADVICE

TIPS AND FUN FACTS TO HELP YOU

PLAN YOUR SWEET MOMENTS

When it comes to planning a wedding, few things bring as

much joy and excitement as the cake. A showstopper at

every reception, your wedding cake can be as unique as

your love story, but with so many options, where do you

even begin? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here, we’re

answering the most common questions to make your cake

journey as smooth (and delicious) as buttercream.

What’s the deal with cake flavours? Can we mix & match?

Absolutely! Many couples are choosing to mix flavours

across their cake tiers. Do you love classic vanilla but your

partner’s all about rich chocolate? You can have both!

Chat with your baker about offering different flavours for

each tier. This way, you’ll cater to a range of tastes and

give your guests the sweet adventure they didn’t know

they needed.

What types of icing do you get, and which one should

we choose?

Your choice of icing affects both taste and design. Here’s

a quick guide:

44

• Fondant: This smooth, pliable icing creates a flawless

finish, making it perfect for sharp edges, intricate

designs, and detailed sugar flowers. While it looks

stunning, fondant is less sweet and has a chewy texture.

Beneath it, a layer of buttercream adds flavour and

helps it stick.

• American Buttercream: The sweetest option, made

from butter and powdered sugar, it’s rich, creamy, and

great for couples who love a classic, sweet cake. It

doesn’t offer the same polished finish as fondant and

works well for simpler designs, like piped patterns or

fresh flowers.

• Swiss Meringue Buttercream: Silky, smooth, and less

Whisked Cakery

sweet, Swiss meringue buttercream provides a refined

flavour. It’s ideal for elegant piping and smooth finishes,

though it’s not as sturdy as fondant for elaborate décor.

For intricate designs or sugar flowers, fondant is your goto.

But if flavour and a soft, creamy texture are priorities,

Swiss meringue buttercream offers a beautiful balance.

Your baker can help you choose the perfect option for your

cake vision!

How do we make a ‘big cake’

statement on a budget?

Dreaming of a grand, towering cake

but wary of the cost? Ask your cake

designer to add dummy layers made

of polystyrene. This will help you

achieve that jaw-dropping look without

the high price tag. Plus, it cuts down on

waste—a win-win!

Whisked Cakery | Conway Photo & Film

planning a more DIY approach, be

sure to transport the cake in a cool,

stable vehicle and drive carefully.

Consider assembling the tiers on-site

if your cake is particularly intricate.

Trust us, nothing ruins wedding vibes

like a toppled cake!

When is the best time to cut the cake?

Traditionally, cake-cutting happened

towards the end of the night, but these

days, many couples are opting to do it

earlier, which has its perks! If your

photographer's schedule ends early,

cutting the cake earlier ensures they

capture this sweet moment. Plus, it

eases the pressure on your catering

crew. By slicing the cake before dinner,

they can smoothly serve it as a plated

dessert course before the dance party

kicks off.

How do we choose the right size cake?

Choosing the right size is all about your

guest count and when you plan to

serve it. If cake will be a featured

dessert alongside your main meal, it’s a

good idea to cater for the entire guest

list. But if you’re offering cake later in

the evening, after a full meal with other

dessert options, you may not need a

slice for every guest. Chat with your

baker to plan the size that suits your

celebration style, and they’ll help

ensure that no guest goes without (and

no slice goes to waste).

How do we transport our cake safely?

Transporting a delicate, multi-tiered

cake is no small feat. Most professional

bakers will handle delivery and set-up

themselves to ensure everything arrives

in perfect condition. However, if you’re

Can we save the top tier of our

wedding cake?

Saving the top tier of your cake for

your first anniversary is a sweet

tradition still loved by many. If you

want to join in, give your baker a

heads-up so they can provide a wellsealed

box to keep it fresh. For best

results, wrap the cake tightly in plastic

before boxing it up to avoid freezer

burn. If the thought of frozen cake

doesn’t excite you, share any leftover

cake with your guests as a parting gift,

and ask your baker to make a fresh

mini version for you on your first

anniversary. It’s a great way to enjoy

those wedding-day flavours all over

again—without your top tier hogging

space in your freezer for a full year!

Wishing you a big slice of joy on your

wedding day, and may your love be as

sweet as frosting!

BEYOND TASTE

WEDDING CAKE DESIGNS FOR THE CONTEMPORARY COUPLE

46

Wedding cakes have come a long way from traditional fruitcake. Today’s couples have a world of flavours at their

fingertips, from zesty lemon and raspberry to indulgent salted caramel or chocolate ganache. Many opt for different

flavours in each tier, offering guests a variety of sweet treats. Beyond taste, 2025 promises some exciting design trends to

elevate your cake game. Here’s a look at the most stylish cake concepts we’re excited to see next year.

Minimalist cakes with floral garlands

One of 2025’s standout trends is the

elegant cake garland. Imagine a sleek,

all-white cake wrapped in a lush

garland of fresh flowers, arranged by

your florist to match your wedding’s

floral palette. The minimalist base

provides the perfect canvas for this

natural embellishment, creating a

romantic and sophisticated

centrepiece. Whether your wedding

vibe is boho chic or classic garden

party, this trend adds effortless charm.

Bows take centre stage

Bows aren’t just for dresses—they’re

making a statement on cakes too!

From delicate sugar bows to grand,

oversized fondant creations, this

whimsical detail exudes elegance.

Particularly striking on minimalist or

monochrome cakes, bows can be

styled to match your wedding

aesthetic. Handcrafted sugar bows

paired with sugar flowers offer a refined

touch of artistry, transforming your

cake into a true statement piece.

Fondant mosaic masterpieces

This design involves intricately crafted

fondant tiles arranged to mimic the

look of a mosaic, often featuring vibrant

colours, geometric patterns, or even

delicate floral designs. Fondant

mosaics can cover an entire cake or be

used as an accent resulting in a unique

work of edible art.

Vintage heart cakes

Heart-shaped cakes are making a

sweet comeback, adding a dose of

nostalgia and romance to modern

weddings. Perfect for couples who want

their cake to visually echo their vows,

this design marries timeless charm with

a playful twist. Whether decorated with

piped buttercream details, fresh

flowers, or a shimmering metallic

glaze, these cakes are as sentimental

as they are stunning.

Pressed florals and fresh blooms

Buttercream cakes adorned with

pressed flowers or fresh blooms are a

feast for the eyes. This trend blends

rustic elegance with natural beauty,

offering a soft, textured finish. Pressed

florals, such as pansies or edible

violets, create a delicate, almost

vintage look, while fresh flowers add

bold, three-dimensional appeal. You

can even incorporate elements from

your bouquet for a cohesive floral

theme.

Bold colour statements

In 2025, wedding cakes are all about

making a bold impression with vibrant

A celebration just isn’t a celebration wiþout cake!

and striking hues. From artistic

brushstrokes to ombré effects, bold

colours offer endless opportunities to

express your unique style.

Creative cake toppers

Personalised cake toppers are an

excellent way to inject personality into

your dessert. Whether it’s a nod to your

pets, favourite travel destination, or

even a lighthearted inside joke, this

trend turns your cake into a

conversation piece.

Consider this your ‘pink ticket’ to create

a cake that is boldly and

unapologetically a reflection of your

sweet desires.

Happy designing!

PAPER WITH PERSONALITY

STANDOUT STATIONERY TRENDS FOR 2025

Who else feels like ‘paper’ deserves a top spot in the wedding lineup? Yes, we’re here for the florals, the food, and, of course,

the dress, but let's give stationery some well-earned admiration. Paper is the stuff of love letters and romance novels. It’s a

nod to the traditional first anniversary gift. And it provides the finishing touches to your wedding aesthetic.

Here are seven stand-out stationery trends that I am excited to see more of in 2025

Aloe Film Co.

50

1. Throwback to the 70s

Retro glam is making a fabulous

comeback! Couples are embracing

vibrant colour schemes and nostalgic

fonts that give their stationery a playful

yet chic feel. Perfect for those who love

a touch of vintage flair and a sprinkle of

Las Vegas-inspired fun.

3. Personalised illustrations

and graphics

From venue sketches to custom

couple portraits, adding hand-drawn

details or graphic illustrations takes

stationery to a unique, personalised

level. These artistic elements make

your suite feel one-of-a-kind and

memorable, capturing the heart of

your celebration.

2. Mad about monochrome

On the other end of the colour

spectrum, minimalist black-and-white

designs are having a major moment.

This elegant, uncluttered look uses rich

card stock, subtle textures, minimalist

font pairings and deliberate negative

space for a sophisticated, timeless

style that’s effortlessly modern.

4. The personal touch

In a world of mass production, a

personal touch goes a long way.

Consider handwritten thank you notes,

customised seating charts, a wedding

newspaper documenting your love

story, or even a photo wall representing

your guests. These intimate details will

captivate and delight your guests!

6. Interactive elements

Why not add a bit of fun to your

stationery? A customised crossword

puzzle, wedding speech bingo, or a

fingerprint guest tree brings a playful

touch, letting guests feel more

connected to your day and each other.

5. Exciting embellishments

and a refinement to your printed

stationery. Coordinating with your

florist and stationery designer is key

to ensuring the finished look is

harmonious and cohesive.

a suite that speaks to your personality and love story. Whether you love bold

colours, elegant minimalism, or unique textures, there’s a trend here that will set

the perfect tone for your celebration.

7. Blend digital with print

For eco-conscious, tech-savvy couples,

online tools like wedding websites can

make planning and managing RSVPs

a breeze. If you’re opting for the

efficient and environmentally friendly

route of digital Save the Dates and e-

invites, consider having your stationer

print a few hard copies. These printed

invites make wonderful keepsakes and

add a special touch to your ‘Wedding

YOUR WEDDING STATIONERY TIMELINE

A GUIDE TO STAYING ON TRACK

Creating a timeline for your wedding stationery helps you manage your schedule effectively, ensuring that your printer has

enough time to work their magic while also allowing for any last-minute changes – like seating charts and place names –

closer to your big day.

Save the Date

Aim to send your 'Save the Date' at least six months before

the big day, especially if guests will need to travel to be

with you. These little reminders not only help your loved

ones plan ahead, but they can also assist in narrowing

down your guest list before the formal invitations go out.

Invitations

Plan to send out your invitations around three months

before the wedding. This is when the magic truly begins!

Your invites set the scene for your celebration and give

your guests the delightful honour of saying "yes" to your

special day.

Wedding website

If you’re thinking about creating a wedding website, get it

up and running at least four months in advance. This

online hub can complement your invitations, providing

additional details about your unique love story, important

wedding day information, and any other fun updates you

want to share with your guests. You can also use it to track

RSVPs and catering preferences.

Day-of stationery

To ensure everything runs smoothly, aim to have your dayof

stationery back from the printers at least one week

before your event. If you anticipate needing to make lastminute

adjustments to your guest list, consider waiting to

print your place cards and seating plan until you're certain.

With these timelines in mind, you’ll be well on your way to a

beautifully organised wedding that reflects your love story

perfectly!

THE BRIDAL GLOW-UP

10 THINGS YOUR HAIR AND MAKE-UP ARTISTS WANT YOU TO KNOW

All right brides. I see you over there—pinning inspiration, bookmarking photos to show your photographer, juggling the

guest list, mood boards, bridesmaid gifts, and trying to sneak in a date night that doesn’t revolve around wedding talk.

56

But, sweet bride-to-be, don’t forget to take care of you!

Here are some tips to help you create a bridal beauty plan

that will have you looking and feeling incredible on your

big day.

1. Find inspiration that matches your features

We’ve all been there: you try out a new hairstyle or

makeup look from Pinterest and it just doesn’t work on

you the way it did on the model. To avoid

disappointment, search for bridal beauty ideas that

match your features—skin tone, hair colour and

texture, eye shape, and face structure. This way, you

can adjust your expectations and create a look that

enhances your natural beauty. And remember, every

face is different! Embrace what you love about yours,

and avoid comparing yourself to someone else's

cheekbones or nose.

2. Book your trial well in advance

To avoid last-minute stress, schedule your hair and

makeup trial about 2–3 months before the wedding.

This gives you plenty of time to experiment with looks

and ensures your hair colour, skin tone, and overall

vibe are on point.

3. Invest in a good skincare regime leading up

to your big day

Invest in your skincare in the months prior to the big

day. A beautiful base will make a world of difference in

your makeup application. Start talking to your

beautician 6–12 months prior to your big day to

develop a skincare plan tailored to your skin type.

While facials are a fun treat, the key to radiant skin lies

in a consistent daily skincare routine.

4. Match your beauty looks with your dress

Your hairstyle and makeup should seamlessly

complement your wedding dress. Bring a picture of

your dress (or the actual dress, if possible) to your trial,

as well as your veil or headpiece, so your artist can

create a look that works with the details. Whether it’s a

dramatic neckline, a delicate back, or intricate

embellishments, these details can help shape your

overall bridal look.

5. Can I change my look between my trial and

wedding day?

It’s common for brides to assume that their trial look

will be exactly replicated on the big day, but

remember: the trial is your opportunity to experiment

and fine-tune your look. During your trial, take photos

of your hair and makeup from the front, back, and

profile. This will allow you to review the styles from

different angles and see how they look in photos.

Sometimes what looks good in person may not

translate as well in pictures, so having a visual

reference is key.

Once you’ve had time to review your photos, you can

decide if there’s anything you’d like to adjust. If it’s just

a small tweak, communicate it with your artist, and

they’ll make the necessary adjustments. If the

changes are more significant, consider booking a

second trial for peace of mind. A professional artist will

know how to manage these requests—just be clear

about your expectations so they can create a look

that you love.

6. Thinking about Permanent Make-Up?

Permanent Make-Up (PMU) is a cosmetic tattooing

technique that enhances features like eyebrows,

eyeliner, and lip colour, providing a semi-permanent

solution for a polished, natural look. It’s ideal for brides

who want to save time on their

honeymoon while still looking

flawless. However, the healing

process can take 4–6 weeks,

during which the colour softens

and the skin fully settles. To ensure

the best results, schedule your PMU

session at least three months

before your wedding, giving ample

time for touch-ups and perfecting

your look.

7. Prep your hair and skin for your

trial and wedding day

For your trial and wedding day,

arrive with clean, dry hair. Dirty or

oily hair won’t hold curls as well,

and your stylist can always add

texture with product if needed.

Clean hair provides a solid

foundation for styling. Equally

important is your skin—come with

a freshly washed and moisturised

face, free of makeup and

sunscreen. This allows your artist to

work on a smooth, hydrated base,

ensuring your makeup lasts longer

and looks flawless throughout the

day. Proper prep for both hair and

skin ensures the best possible

results for your bridal look.

You catch sight of your reflection

and can’t help but smile. That is

the power of Blush Makeup.

8. Stay hydrated for that natural

glow

It’s simple but essential—drink

plenty of water in the lead-up to

your wedding day. Hydrated skin is

the best canvas for makeup and

gives you a plump, fresh glow. Aim

for around two litres of water daily

(more if you're active or it’s hot).

Staying hydrated also helps

reduce puffiness, improve skin

elasticity, and minimise the

59

appearance of fine lines, ensuring you look and feel radiant. Start this habit

early for the best results!

9. Don’t go last for hair and make-up on the big day

Traditionally, brides were scheduled last for hair and make-up, but we

recommend a different approach. Book your slot midway through the line-up

to give yourself a buffer in case of delays. This helps ensure you’re not rushed

and that you arrive at the altar feeling composed and looking your best.

10. Your makeup will be a little heavier than you’re used to

Yes, wedding make-up tends to be a bit more dramatic than your everyday

look, but it’s specifically designed to withstand hours of wear, varying weather

conditions and even some tears. Professional wedding photography,

especially in varying lighting conditions, can wash out lighter make-up, which

is why a slightly bolder application is necessary. However, this doesn’t mean

you’ll look or feel overdone. A skilled artist will balance coverage and

definition, ensuring your features are beautifully enhanced while maintaining

a natural, timeless aesthetic. The goal is for your make-up to not act as a

mask but rather to highlight your best features, stay flawless all day, and look

stunning in every photo.

By following these expert tips, you’ll feel confident, radiant, and ready for your big

day. So, take a breath, trust the process, and let your beauty shine!

YOUR WEDDING

MORNING

CHECKLIST

Your wedding morning sets the tone

for the entire day, so it's essential to

keep things calm, organised, and fun.

1. Timeline printout: Have a printed

copy of your schedule handy to

keep you and your bridal party

on track.

2. Say goodbye to the imprint

brigade: For flawless photos,

remove anything that might leave

marks on your skin—bras, hair ties,

watches, and socks.

3. Curate your keepsakes: Gather

items like jewellery, perfume, vows,

and rings in one spot so your

photographer can capture

beautiful flat-lay shots without

searching for them.

4. Hydrate and nourish: Drink water

and eat a proper meal. Staying

fueled helps you feel your best

throughout the day.

5. Pack a dress toolkit: Pack

essentials—boob tape, doublesided

tape, and a crochet hook

or bobby pin for tricky buttons.

6. Create a fun atmosphere with

music. Ask a bridesmaid to bring

a speaker and curate a feel-good

playlist for your glam session.

2025 WEDDING DRESS TRENDS WE’RE LOVING

From the catwalk to your ceremony, the latest wedding dress trends

for 2025 are all about versatility and personal expression. Whether

you prefer sleek minimalism or over-the-top glamour, this year's

styles have something for every bride. Let’s explore some of the top

trends we’re excited about that will make you look and feel stunning

on your big day.

Basque waists

While drop waist gowns made an appearance in last year’s

collections, they are taking centre stage in 2025. From longline corsets

to peplum-inspired shapes, the styles of the season emphasise an

elongated torso. We love the regal look of this waistline, plus it gets

bonus points for being super flattering on all different body types.

62

Blooming romance

Florals are a bridal staple, but this

year they’ve taken on new life

with more intricate designs and

textures. Expect 3D blooms,

embroidered vines, and bold

floral prints that bring romance

and a modern twist to classic

gowns. From subtle floral details

to full-blown garden-inspired

looks, it’s all about adding texture

and dimension to your dress.

Colour me beautiful!

Who says you have to stick to a white wedding dress? Not us! This year, we’re

seeing elegant black gowns, soft blush tones, and pastel accents making their

way down the aisle. For those who prefer a more traditional look, you can add

smaller pops of colour with floral appliqués or colourful veils, bringing a unique

touch to your bridal ensemble.

Corsetry

It's not surprising to see this Bridgertoninspired

trend continue to flourish,

especially considering its torsolengthening,

silhouette-snatching

effects. Almost every collection seen on

this season's runways featured some

form of the construction-exposing look.

Vintage-inspired glamour

Designers are embracing historical

influences with vintage-inspired

gowns that evoke a sense of old-world

charm. With collection names like

"Renaissance Reimagined," "The

Forgotten Era" and "The Secret Garden"

it’s not surprising that we are seeing

details like luxe fabric, rich lace, ruffles

and basque bodices. 2025 bridal

fashion is filled with nods to the past,

offering timeless elegance with a

modern twist.

Statement sleeves

One thing we’ll forever adore? Sleeves!

Whether it’s dramatic puff sleeves,

delicate lace details, or detachable

options for a two-in-one look, 2025’s

bridal sleeves are making bold

statements. Perfect for winter weddings

or those seeking a touch of romance,

sleeves add dimension and

sophistication to any bridal gown.

Wedding bows

The bow trend may be waning from

mainstream fashion, but it’s still going

full force in the world of bridal. From

large, eye-catching bows to smaller,

more delicate accents, this trend adds

a playful, feminine touch. Whether tied

on the back of your dress, affixed to a

veil, or added to your shoes, bows are

undeniably the it-girl embellishment.

Bespoke veils and headpieces

Customised veils and headpieces are stealing the spotlight, with brides opting

for unique, handcrafted designs. Think ethereal capes, birdcage veils, or

intricately beaded headbands that bring a personal touch to your outfit. These

accessories are not just a finishing detail—they can elevate your entire bridal look

to one-of-a-kind status.

2025’s wedding dresses won’t disappoint!

Tulle is being used in bold, creative ways this season, with

GROOM’S GUIDE TO SUITING UP

7 MUST KNOW TIPS FOR GROOMS WHO WANT TO LOOK THEIR BEST

As the groom, all eyes will be on you too, and looking your best doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you’re new to

suiting or just need a refresher, we’ve gathered the essentials to get you ready. From choosing the right fit to adding those

thoughtful details, these seven tips will ensure you feel prepared and look just as stylish as your bride.

70

1. Get jacketed right

Your jacket fits properly if the seams hug your

shoulders but still allow you to move your arms

comfortably. The shoulder seams should align

precisely with the edge of your shoulders to avoid

a common issue called a “shoulder divot”—an

indentation or dip that occurs when the jacket's

shoulders are too wide or too narrow. This gap

disrupts the jacket's clean line, making it look ill-fitted

and can also limit your movement.

2. Just-right jacket length

Think of your jacket length as a balancing act—long

enough to cover your trouser zipper and derrière, but

not so long it looks like you borrowed it from your taller

mate. Too short, and you risk looking like you've raided

your old school uniform. Aim for that just-right length

that flatters your frame.

3. Pocket perfection

Your trouser side pockets are like the unseen heroes of

your suit—best kept in the background. Bulging

pockets ruin the clean lines of your suit and make it

look too tight. On your wedding day, avoid filling them

with essentials like phones, keys, or wallets. Let your

groomsmen handle any extras, so you’re free to move

comfortably and look sharp in every photo.

subtle but classic rule that adds polish. And whenever

you sit down, unbutton your jacket to avoid creasing

the fabric and keep yourself comfortable. These small

details show you know how to wear a suit with

confidence and style.

7. Finishing touches: Ties and tie pins, as well as which

side do you pin a boutonnière

While not essential, adding a tie, boutonnière, or tie pin

can give your suit an extra dose of style—if done

correctly. Your tie should just graze your waistband or

the top of your belt buckle, adding polish without

overpowering your look. If you opt for a boutonnière,

pin it close to the buttonhole on your left lapel,

threading the pin from the back to keep things neat.

For those who want to add a tie pin, place it between

the third and fourth buttons of your shirt, anchoring it

to your tie for a touch of sophistication. Together,

these elements can bring personality to your outfit

without stealing the spotlight.

With these suiting essentials, you’ll look ready for the

celebration of a lifetime!

4. Show a hint of cuff

The perfect jacket sleeve should end just at your wrist

bone, allowing a small sliver —about 1–1.5cm—of your

shirt cuff to peek out. This subtle detail adds a

polished touch and keeps the proportions sharp. If

your jacket sleeves cover your entire cuff or are too

short, get them adjusted for a well-fitted look.

5. Pick one: Braces or belt

Braces and belts both do the same job, so wearing

both is overkill—and a bit of a style slip-up. Choose

one, but never both, to keep your look polished and

intentional.

6. Button etiquette: Stand and sit with style

When wearing a jacket with multiple buttons,

remember to keep the bottom button undone—it’s a

DÉCOR AND FLOWERS,

DEMYSTIFIED

FROM CONFUSION TO COHESION: NAILING YOUR WEDDING AESTHETIC

74

Planning your wedding décor and flowers can feel like a monumental task. From deciding on a colour palette to choosing

the right stylist or even considering a DIY approach, there are a lot of decisions to be made. This guide will walk you through

the essentials, helping you to stay focused and make informed choices.

What order should I tackle my wedding décor

and flowers?

When faced with a myriad of decisions, it’s helpful to

approach your wedding décor and floral planning in a

logical sequence:

• Set your budget

Before anything else, determine how much you’re

willing to spend on décor and flowers. This will guide all

your decisions, from venue choice to floral

arrangements.

• Choose your venue

Your venue plays a significant role in shaping your

wedding aesthetic. Whether it’s a lush garden, an

open-plan barn, or a beachfront escape, the space will

set the tone and influence your décor.

• Pick a colour palette

With your venue in mind, choose a colour palette that

complements the setting and suits your vision.

• Create a vision board

Gather inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, and

wedding magazines. Collect images that reflect your

desired style, from floral arrangements to table

settings.

• Reach out to a décor and floral stylist

Once your vision is clear, consult a professional stylist

to help bring it to life. They’ll help refine your ideas,

suggest practical (locally available) solutions, and

ensure your wedding aesthetic is cohesive.

What’s the difference between ‘colour palette’ and

‘wedding aesthetic’?

Your wedding colour palette is one piece of a larger puzzle.

Your wedding aesthetic is the overall style and vibe that

brings your vision to life, guiding decisions on everything

from flowers to stationery to attire.

Over the page, we share some tips that will help you work

out which aesthetic best suits you.

• Start with your style preferences

Think about the home décor and

interior spaces you love—modern

and minimalist, vintage and ornate,

or something else entirely. Let your

personal style shape your

wedding’s look.

• Colours that speak your love

language

Choose hues that resonate with

you as a couple, complement your

venue, and suit the season. Be sure

to also note any shades that you

don’t like.

• Draw from your story

Incorporate hobbies, shared

interests, or cherished memories

for a personal touch. A favourite

destination or activity can inspire

unique elements.

• Embrace traditions and seasons

Consider cultural rituals and the

time of year. Both can add depth

and beauty to your aesthetic,

making it more cohesive and

meaningful.

• Formal or full-blown fiesta

Close your eyes and picture your

wedding day. Is it a glamorous

black-tie bash, a stylish yet relaxed

soirée, or a laid-back lovefest?

Think about your ideal attire and

how it fits with your chosen venue.

When it comes to dining, are you

leaning towards a lavish fine-dining

experience or a relaxed feast?

What’s the difference between a

wedding planner and a venue

coordinator?

Many venues include a ‘wedding

coordinator’ as part of their package,

but it’s important to understand their

role compared to a wedding planner.

Wedding Venue Coordinator

Their primary focus is on the venue’s

operations. They will typically manage

the setup, ensure the space is ready on

time, and handle logistical issues like

catering and furniture placement.

However, they won’t be responsible for:

• Designing your décor and florals

• Coordinating with outside vendors

beyond what the venue provides

• Managing your wedding day

timeline

Wedding Planner

A wedding planner takes a holistic

approach, acting as your go-to person

for every aspect of your wedding. They

provide end-to-end support, which can

include:

• Budget management and vendor

negotiations

• Assisting in defining your wedding

aesthetic and décor design

• Coordinating all vendors and

managing contracts

• Overseeing the timeline and

troubleshooting issues on the day

If you’re not keen on hiring a full-service

planner, you might consider a Day-of

Coordinator. Despite the name, their

role extends far beyond the day itself.

They typically step in a few months

before the wedding to:

• Familiarise themselves with your

plans and vendors

• Create a detailed wedding day

• Confirm logistics with all vendors in

the final weeks

Should I DIY my wedding flowers?

DIYing your wedding flowers can be

tempting—after all, the idea of

arranging some pretty blooms with

friends while sipping cocktails sounds

like the perfect pre-wedding bonding

session. Plus, it could save you a

significant chunk of your budget, right?

But there’s more to wedding flowers

than meets the eye.

Here are a few things to consider

before diving into DIY:

• Storage and transport

Flowers need cool, spacious

storage and careful transport to

prevent wilting or damage.

• Troubleshooting expertise

Professional florists are experts at

handling bulk orders, ensuring

flowers are prepped and arranged

perfectly. They’re also seasoned

problem-solvers when it comes to

last-minute hiccups, like

substitutions or damaged blooms.

• Venue Setup

On your wedding day, someone will

need to set up the floral

arrangements at the venue—and

clean up afterwards. This can be

time-consuming and stressful,

especially if you’re already juggling

other tasks.

If you thrive on hands-on projects and

have a reliable support crew to help,

DIY flowers can add a personal and

heartfelt touch to your day. Just be sure

to factor in the time and effort required,

and have a solid plan for setup and

execution.

However, if the logistics feel

overwhelming or you’d rather avoid the

stress, hiring a professional florist could

be the best decision. Not only will you

benefit from their expertise, but you’ll

also have peace of mind—and jawdropping

floral designs—that are truly

worth the investment.

How to plan for a bespoke wedding

setup

A bespoke wedding setup allows you

to create a completely personalised

MRent Events

space, but it requires careful planning.

Without the built-in amenities of

traditional venues, you'll need to focus

on a few key elements to ensure your

day is both functional and stylish. Here

are the top areas to consider:

• Lounge areas for style and comfort

Lounge seating offers a chic yet

practical solution for guests during

canapés or when they need a break

from the dance floor. Blend sofas,

ottomans, and side tables with your

wedding aesthetic, and consider

adding soft rugs, potted plants, or

even a mobile bar for extra flair.

• Lighting and draping for

atmosphere

Combine lighting and draping to

transform your venue. Romantic

chandeliers, twinkling fairy lights, or

modern pendant lights paired with

elegant drapery can elevate any

space, adding warmth and

sophistication. Work with a specialist

to create layered lighting that

highlights key areas, such as dining

spaces and dance floors.

• Stretch tents and marquees for

cover and ambience

Outdoor weddings benefit greatly

from stretch tents or marquees.

These not only provide essential

shelter from sun or rain but also add

an elegant architectural feature.

Opt for designs that complement

your aesthetic, and pair them with

draping or lighting to enhance the

ambience, creating a stylish but

practical environment for your

celebration.

Planning your wedding décor and

flowers is like piecing together a

beautiful puzzle—one bloom, ribbon,

and candle at a time. It’s all part of the

adventure! Whether you’re using

professionals, DIY-ing with your besties,

or a mix of both, remember that it’s

your love story taking centre stage. So,

embrace the process, enjoy the little

wins along the way, and let your unique

style shine through every petal and

place setting. After all, the most

important thing is that your wedding

feels like you—perfectly imperfect and

unforgettable.

LIGHTS,

YOUR NO-FUSS GUIDE TO HIRING

PHOTO AND VIDEO WEDDING PROS

Your wedding day is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and

choosing the right photo and film team is crucial. You

want professionals who not only capture stunning visuals

but also feel like an extension of your wedding party—

friendly, fun, and in sync with your vibe. Here’s your

ultimate guide to finding your perfect fit.

1. Discover your signature style

Your wedding photos should reflect your unique vibe as

a couple, so it’s important to know what aesthetic makes

your heart skip a beat. Start by exploring the most

popular photography styles:

Light & airy: Soft, romantic, and dreamy, this style bathes

your images in natural light and pastel hues.

Conway Photo & Film

Dark & moody: Dramatic, atmospheric, and full of rich

contrast, perfect for couples who want their love story to

feel cinematic.

Bold & vibrant: Bursting with colour and energy, this style

captures the joy and excitement of the day.

Vintage & nostalgic: Evoking timeless romance, it

features muted tones, soft focus, and an old-world

charm.

Stephen Michael

Documentary/photojournalistic: Unposed and authentic,

this approach captures real, unscripted moments as

they happen.

Browse portfolios and social media to see which style

resonates with you. Remember, your photographer will

often blend elements from different styles, but it’s crucial

to pick someone whose overall aesthetic feels like “you.”

PHOTO & FILM

87

2. Don’t ask a watercolour artist to

paint in oils

Every photographer has a signature

style—it's their artistic fingerprint.

Asking them to drastically change

their editing approach is like hiring a

watercolour artist and then

demanding they work in bold oil

paints. Sure, they could try, but the

result will likely fall short of what you

imagined and stray far from their

expertise.

Do your homework upfront. When

considering a photographer, ask to

see full galleries, not just their

Instagram highlights. This will give

you a comprehensive view of their

work across different weddings,

lighting conditions, and moments. If

their aesthetic doesn’t align with

your vision, move on to someone

who naturally delivers the style you

love.

Remember, you’re choosing this

professional because you’re drawn

to their artistic eye—trust it. Expecting

them to mimic someone else’s style

only leads to frustration on both

sides. Stick to what made you fall in

love with their work in the first place,

and let their signature shine through.

3. Choose your dream team of

memory makers

Gone are the days when a wedding

photographer was your only option

for capturing memories. Now, you

can mix and match a variety of pros,

depending on your priorities and

budget.

Here’s a breakdown of the key

players:

Photographer: The cornerstone of

wedding memories. They’ll create a

beautifully curated collection of

images, capturing everything from

emotional first looks to lively dance

floor moments. These are the

keepsakes you’ll cherish forever.

Videographer: For couples who want

their day to come alive on screen. A

videographer captures not just the

visuals but the sounds and

atmosphere, crafting a wedding film

that feels like your own personal

movie.

Day-of Content Creator: Think of

them as your behind-the-scenes

social media guru. They’ll capture

short, dynamic clips and candid

shots throughout the day, perfect for

instant sharing on Instagram, TikTok,

or your wedding website.

Live Streamer: Ideal for connecting

with loved ones who can’t be there in

person. They’ll broadcast the key

moments live, allowing remote

guests to celebrate with you from

wherever they are in the world.

With these options in mind, think

about what matters most—whether

it’s cinematic storytelling, instant

online updates, or ensuring no guest

misses out—and tailor your team

accordingly.

88

4. Your chemistry behind the camera

counts

Once you’ve shortlisted

photographers or videographers, it’s

Marielle Catherine Photography

Burczak Wedding Photography

time to see if you click—personality

matters just as much as skill. You’ll be

spending hours with them on your big

day, so they should be someone you

genuinely enjoy being around. Trust

and comfort are essential for

capturing natural, joyful moments.

To take it a step further, book a prewedding

engagement shoot. This trial

run helps you get comfortable in front

of the camera while giving your

photographer a chance to learn your

best angles and style. The result?

Stunning photos for your Save the

Dates or wedding website—and a

boost of confidence knowing you’re in

good hands. Plus, it’s a fun, lowpressure

way to bond with your

photographer before the big day!

5. Why are photographers so

expensive?

If you’ve ever experienced “sticker

shock” while browsing wedding

photography packages, you’re not

alone. But let’s break down why

professional photographers charge

what they do:

Time beyond the wedding day: Your

photographer isn’t just working on

your wedding day. For every hour

spent capturing your event, they’ll

spend countless more editing and

perfecting your images. Postproduction

can take weeks to ensure

your photos are flawless.

Years of expertise: A photographer

charging premium rates has spent

years honing their craft, refining their

style, and mastering the art of

storytelling through images.

While it’s perfectly fine (and

encouraged) to stick to your budget,

understand that some

photographers are priced outside of

it. Some top-tier professionals

choose to take on fewer clients to

maintain a bespoke, creative

approach. It’s their prerogative—and

part of what makes their work so

exceptional.

6. Read the fine print

Contracts might not be glamorous,

but they’re essential. Make sure you

understand the nitty-gritty: how

many photos you’ll receive, whether

you’re getting a digital gallery or

physical album, and how long postproduction

will take. Don’t be shy—

ask questions and ensure everything

is crystal clear before signing.

Your photo and film team will

preserve the moments you’ll

treasure forever. Take your time, trust

your instincts, and enjoy the process

of finding the perfect fit. After all,

these professionals will transform

your wedding day into timeless

keepsakes that tell your love story for

years to come.

A signature location shot

Mark your day with a picture-perfect

location shot that speaks to the

unique setting of your celebration. Be it

a majestic mountain backdrop, an

urban skyline, or a serene beach, this is

the iconic image that defines your

wedding’s sense of place—and one

that’s destined to become a

centrepiece in your home.

But remember, it’s not about rushing to

dozens of locations. A skilled

photographer knows how to maximise

your venue’s potential, finding varied

and stunning backdrops without

wasting precious time. If they’re

The 'little' moments

If you’re inviting kids to your wedding,

expect a treasure trove of sweet,

candid moments. From curious

glances to playful antics, little ones

bring a special charm to your day. Be

sure to let your photographer know if

there are any special tiny guests you’d

like them to capture—their natural

curiosity and joy are pure gold for your

wedding album.

While you may have a picture-perfect

vision of your flower girl delicately

scattering petals or your ring bearer

confidently striding down the aisle, kids

can be unpredictable. They might get

stage fright, wander off course, or even

decide to take a nap mid-ceremony!

Geoff Brink Creative

Don’t stress about deviations from the

plan. These unscripted moments often

result in the most heartwarming and

memorable photos. Let your

photographer capture the magic of

whatever unfolds, planned or not.

To keep kids entertained, consider

providing activity kits at the reception—

colouring books, puzzles, or small toys

can work wonders. If possible,

designate a kid-friendly area with

games or a movie corner. Including

them in parts of your day, like a group

dance or a special shout-out during

speeches, makes them feel valued and

part of the celebration.

With a bit of flexibility and preparation,

you’ll ensure the little ones enjoy

themselves while creating delightful

memories for everyone.

Intimate moments with loved ones

There’s definitely a place for traditional

family portraits and posed shots with

your bridal party—these timeless

images will always hold value. But the

real magic lies in the unguarded

moments, the ones that can’t be

scripted or planned.

A shared glance with your mum, your

best friend’s tearful smile, or your dad’s

quiet pride—these are the photos that

will tug at your heartstrings for years to

come. If capturing these fleeting,

intimate moments is important to you,

make sure to choose a photographer

with an eye for those details.

Conway Photo & Film

They’ll know how to blend into the

background, quietly observing and

snapping candid gems as they unfold.

From a quiet moment together before

the ceremony to an uncontrollable,

head-thrown-back laugh with your

bestie, or the joyful chaos of wild

dance moves, these are the shots that

reflect the true spirit of your day.

While you may feel self-conscious

being photographed all day, embrace

the moment and act naturally. Don’t

overthink or try to pose every frame—

trust your photographer to find the

beauty in the candid. They’ll be there

to guide you, fixing stray hairs or

lipstick smudges when needed, but

they’ll also capture the moments you

didn’t even realise were happening.

These are the photos that will take you

back to the emotions of your day, time

and time again.

Reflection shots

There’s something undeniably magical

about the subtle play of light and

reflection.

When your photographer captures you

through a windowpane, these images

layer the world inside and out, adding

an ethereal quality to your album. They

offer a sense of depth and perspective

that feels both intimate and cinematic.

But windows are just the beginning.

Luca Photography

If your venue has a pool, a serene dam,

or even a decorative fountain, these

can provide striking reflection

opportunities. Imagine the two of you

standing at the water’s edge, your

image mirrored perfectly in the still

surface—a picture of timeless romance

and symmetry.

Even unexpected moments can offer

creative possibilities.

A puddle from a sudden rain shower

might seem like a nuisance at first, but

in the hands of a skilled photographer,

it becomes a tool for creating

breathtaking reflection shots. The soft

glow of candlelight against a polished

surface or the glint of your shoes on a

shiny floor can also add subtle,

reflective touches.

LUCABARAUSSE@GMAIL.COM

These spontaneous opportunities

remind us that beauty often lies in the

unplanned. By incorporating

reflections, you capture not only the

physical surroundings of your wedding

but also evoke a sense of depth,

wonder, and creativity, making your

gallery truly unforgettable.

Super trendy late-night flat lay

The flat lay has become a staple in the

modern couple’s wedding album, and

for good reason. It’s a beautifully

curated way to capture the small but

significant details—your shoes,

jewellery, bouquet, vows, and other

personal touches that reflect the

aesthetic of your day. Think of it as a

photographic scrapbook, preserving

those tiny elements you spent months

choosing in one perfect frame.

But now, there’s a spunky new kid on

the block: the late-night flat lay.

This photographic trend trades

polished elegance for a messy, livedin

vibe that’s brimming with

personality. Late into the night, when

the dance floor is alive and the

champagne’s flowing, the late-night

flat lay captures the magic in all its

chaotic glory.

Picture scattered confetti, a pair of

heart-shaped sunnies abandoned on

the table, a half-eaten slice of cake,

and lipstick-smudged napkins.

This style is playful, unfiltered, and tells

a different story—one of celebration,

fun, and those unforgettable moments

when everyone lets loose.

If you want your wedding album to

capture the full journey of your day,

the late-night flat lay is the perfect

way to highlight the wild, carefree

energy of the night’s peak.

SINCE 2020

Whether it’s the silhouette of you and

your partner holding hands against a

dramatic sunset or your shadows

dancing on a wall, these images evoke

a sense of timeless romance. They’re

like a poetic reflection of your love,

captured in the subtle dance between

light and shadow.

Including shadow shots in your gallery

adds a layer of depth and artistry,

playing with contrast and texture in a

way that feels almost otherworldly.

These images offer a different

perspective, highlighting the outlines

and shapes of key moments without

the finer details, leaving room for

imagination and emotion to take

centre stage.

Photographers often use natural

sunlight to craft stunning silhouettes

during golden hour, where the soft,

warm light creates the perfect

conditions for romantic shadow play.

But even in less predictable settings,

they can experiment with artificial

lighting to produce bold, dramatic

effects.

From soft, dreamy shadows to striking

Shooting 'through'

Shooting ‘through’ a barrier—whether

it’s the crack in a rockface, the delicate

leaves of a tree, or an ornate

doorway—creates a dreamy, layered

effect that adds depth and artistry to

your photos. This technique transforms

everyday surroundings into natural

frames, drawing the eye to the subject

while adding texture and dimension to

the shot.

The result is an intimate, cinematic

feel, making your images stand out

with a unique perspective. A skilled

photographer can use this technique

to transform ordinary locations into

extraordinary ones, capturing the

beauty of your day in a creative,

organic way.

Celebrating Love n Capturing memories

The action shot

Bring energy, excitement, and a whole

lot of personality to your wedding

album with dynamic action shots that

capture the fun.

Whether it’s the bride being flung into

the air by the groomsmen, the bride

tribe twirling in their dresses, or the

groom squad charging toward the

camera in a race to grab the beer—

sorry, flag—these moments capture the

pure joy and movement of your day.

Action shots inject life into your photos,

transforming them from static

memories into vibrant, storytelling

images that practically leap off the

page.

Movement is a gift for your video team

too. They thrive on capturing fluid,

natural motion—nothing deflates the

energy of your wedding film like stiff,

stationary poses.

To get everyone into the spirit, your

photographer might suggest prompts

like, “Walk toward me like you’re in a

music video!” or “On the count of three,

jump as high as you can!” Be a good

sport and roll with it; you’re guaranteed

some epic action shots.

If you’re the kind of couple who wants

moments will be a perfect fit.

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE

BLENDING MUSIC, LOVE & DANCE ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

Burczak Wedding Photography

From the soft tunes welcoming guests to your ceremony to the celebratory beats that close out the night, music frames

each moment of your wedding day with emotion. A well-thought-out soundtrack ensures that every part of your day

resonates with your personality and love story. Here’s a complete guide to help you tune into every moment.

100

Marielle Catherine Photography

Key musical moments to plan for

Music isn't just for the first dance or the aisle walk—it can

elevate every aspect of your day. Think through each

phase, from your guests’ arrival to your grand send-off:

• Prelude: Soft tunes as guests settle in set a welcoming

tone.

• Processional: Choose a song that fits the pace of your

walk and the emotion of the moment.

• Signing of the register: Light music here enhances the

significance of this part of your ceremony and

prevents ‘dead air’.

• Recessional: A celebratory song is fitting for a joyful

exit as a married couple.

• Post-Ceremony / Cocktail hour: Upbeat background

music keeps spirits high while guests mingle.

• Reception entrance: The grand reveal of the new

Mr and Mrs! Choose a high-energy tune to mark your

debut as newlyweds.

• First dance: This song will become something of an

anthem for years to come, so choose something

meaningful.

• Parent dances: If you’re including these, pick tunes

that capture your relationship with each parent.

• Speech intros: Personalised walk-up songs can add

humour and fun to speeches.

• Last dance: Choose a song that wraps up the night in

style as you make your exit.

Luca Photography

The live music vs. DJ dilemma

The choice between live musicians and a DJ can shape

the vibe of your day. A live band brings a unique energy

and emotional connection, making each note feel

personal. A DJ, however, can keep the dance floor busy

with perfectly curated hits. If your budget allows, why not

combine both? Have a live musician set the tone for the

ceremony and cocktail hour, then let a DJ lead the evening

festivities with an energetic playlist.

Stephen Michael

Questions to consider:

• What atmosphere do you envision? Intimate or lively,

classic or modern?

• How flexible is your venue? Check if your space can

accommodate both live and recorded music with

appropriate power and acoustics.

MUSIC

101

Choose your ceremony songs thoughtfully

For religious or formal ceremonies, consult with your officiant on any music

restrictions. Certain songs or lyrics may not align with the tone of a traditional

setting, so it’s always worth double-checking. Remember, every piece of music

should feel fitting and respectful for the space and the people involved.

Avoid the ‘Silent Room’ syndrome

Guests often arrive early, so filling that time with ambient music adds warmth and

happy anticipation. Request your ceremony musician to start playing 20–30

minutes before the start time to create an inviting atmosphere.

Venue acoustics and logistics

A venue's acoustics can affect how music sounds, from crisp and clear to soft

and echoey. Outdoor venues, high ceilings, and large spaces can present

challenges, so make sure your sound team understands the layout and power

options. Given our national power grid issues, make sure your venue or sound

crew have a backup power source ready.

Important details to cover with your venue:

• Power accessibility: Especially for outdoor or remote locations.

• Sound restrictions: Some venues limit volume or type of music.

• Weather contingencies: Outdoor spaces might require a covered area.

Curate your playlist with care

The best playlists are those that reflect your tastes and preferences. Don’t shy

away from creating a ‘do-not-play’ list if there are specific songs or genres that

don’t fit your style. Additionally, a ‘must-play’ list will help your DJ or musicians to

create a soundtrack that feels like you. Pro tip: review song lyrics to avoid

unintended messages. Some popular songs may have catchy beats but don’t

convey the love, respect and joy you want on your wedding day.

The importance of an MC

A Master of Ceremonies (MC) is essential for keeping your wedding day on track,

setting the right tone, and engaging your guests at key moments. Whether it’s

introducing speeches, announcing the first dance, or prompting guests for the

cake cutting, an MC ensures everyone knows what’s happening next. If you’ve

chosen a DJ who also serves as your MC, it’s crucial that they are well-briefed on

announcements and the timeline for the day. Alternatively, if your MC is a friend,

family member, or someone other than your DJ, arrange for them to meet with

the DJ before the reception begins. This gives them a chance to discuss timing,

cues, and transitions, ensuring that they work seamlessly together to create a

smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Adjust sound levels to fit the moment

During certain parts of the day, such as dinner time, the music volume should be

Pose-a-Rosey Photography

Vix Photography

Luca Photography

comfortable so that it doesn’t overshadow conversations

whereas for high-energy moments like the dance floor,

you’ll want the volume pumped up. Make sure that your

sound team is on the same page as you when it comes to

appropriate volume levels.

Ask for referrals and recommendations

A good recommendation can make all the difference.

Reach out to friends or family, check reviews, and if

possible, attend an event where your prospective DJ or

musician is performing. Your wedding sound is not a job

for Uncle Bob or your mate, Richie, unless, of course, Bob or

Richie are top-notch DJs! On this important day, you need

a professional who can connect with your audience and

handle any surprises that might pop up.

From your aisle walk to the last dance, a thoughtfully

curated soundtrack lets every special moment sing.

DUTIES FOR

Keep things on schedule, gracefully

Your MC is like the conductor of your

keep everything on track, they also

need to adapt gracefully if things run

behind or need rearranging.

Introduce key moments and

cue speeches

From the grand entrance to heartfelt

toasts, your MC will lead these

moments with confidence. While the

MC isn’t usually one of the official

speechmakers, it helps if they know

the speakers well enough to

introduce them thoughtfully—and

add a touch of humour.

Navigate through hiccups smoothly

An experienced MC knows how to

handle last-minute hiccups or

technical issues without drawing

attention. This could mean stalling if a

video isn’t ready, calming a rowdy

guest, or helping with minor mishaps.

Choosing a confident, warm, and

adaptable MC ensures your wedding

runs smoothly and joyfully.

THE HONEYMOON PHASE

TEN TIPS TO PLAN THE MOST ROMANTIC TRIP OF YOUR LIFE

One of the loveliest things about a wedding is that it’s one of the rare moments in life when you have all your most

important people gathered in the same place—and all their love and attention is focused on you. Is this wonderful?

Extremely. Do you need some decompression time afterwards? Absolutely. Enter: Honeymoon dreaming!

106

Are you picturing blissing out on beach loungers, iced

cocktail in hand, as the rhythmic shhhh of the waves

quiets your wedding-planning mind? Or perhaps it’s a

sunset game drive you have in mind, your attention

shifting between the animals in the golden glow of dusk

and the new ring on your partner’s hand that makes you

smile each time it catches your eye? Whatever wanderlust

is whispering to you, our collection of honeymoon

destinations is sure to bring that dream into pulsequickening

focus.

As you dive into the fun of these “What if we…”

conversations, here are our top tips for planning a

honeymoon you can’t stop smiling about.

1. Start early for smooth sailing

Finding your dream spot and then realising it’s

booked out can deflate your honeymoon hopes

like a punctured lilo. Start planning well in advance,

especially if you plan on honeymooning during

peak season, to make sure your vision becomes

a reservation.

Nambiti Plains Private Game Lodge | Kierran Allan Photography

2. The honeyfund: a gift of an experience rather

than things

If you already have a toaster and enough dishware for

a small army, think about setting up a honeymoon

fund for friends and family to contribute towards as

their wedding gift to you. You can set this up online to

make it super convenient. A postcard from paradise

makes for a fun thank you card!

Umngazi

3. Double the fun with a delayed honeymoon

Planning a honeymoon on top of a wedding can feel a

bit overwhelming and costly. Opting for a mini-moon

right after the wedding and saving the “main event”

honeymoon for a later date not only eases the

pressure but gives you something magnificent to look

forward to in the moments after your big day when

you can’t quite remember what you did with your

spare time before you were planning a wedding.

4. Your honeymoon, your rules

Every couple is different. Lazy beach days might be

your idea of holiday bliss, while others crave a bit of

Leopard Walk Lodge

Even if they don’t offer a discount, they might surprise

you with a free activity or complimentary upgrade.

7. Discover local gems

Exotic overseas trips are enticing, but don't overlook

the hidden treasures right on your doorstep. Did you

know that South Africa is one of the world's top

honeymoon destinations? Your dream trip might be a

shorter flight away than you think!

Marielle Catherine Photography

STARRY-EYED SURPRISE OR A JOINT VENTURE?

If you love the idea of a surprise (and your spouse is

all in), here are some questions to ask to help the

planner and make sure you both get what you want

out of it:

• What are your non-negotiables? (Maybe you

usually love camping but not this time!)

• On a scale of 1–10, where 1 is ultimate relaxation

and 10 is adventure, what do you want your

honeymoon to feel like?

• What’s your budget cap?

• Leave and budget depending, how long do you

want it to be?

8. Don’t be subtle (even just this once)

It’s not every day you’re on your honeymoon! Here’s a

heartwarming little secret: when people hear that you

are, they are (more often than not) 100% on board with

making it as special as possible for you. Don't be shy

about sharing your newlywed status with your

accommodation. You’ll likely find yourself walking into

a candlelit clearing with a table set for two, or sinking

into a blissful complimentary couple’s massage.

9. Budget for ‘hidden’ costs

Over and above travel and accommodation, factor

things like car rentals, airport transfers, meals, drinks,

activities and tips into your budget. Even if you go for

an all-inclusive package, the total cost can be more

than meets the eye.

108

adventure blended in. Let go of any preconceived

notions of what a honeymoon should be and dream

up an itinerary that feels like exactly what you need at

this unique time in your lives.

5. Make it a slow dance

After the whirlwind of wedding planning, give yourself

the gift of the slow life on your honeymoon. Spend at

least two nights at your first location and avoid

packing your schedule with activities. Moving from sun

lounger to pool, back to sun lounger? That’s a

productive afternoon.

6. Bargain hunt, baby

If you plan ahead and are flexible with travel dates,

you can land some great deals. Check with local

luxury lodges if they offer special rates for residents.

10. Ask an agent

Dreaming up the perfect honeymoon can be fun, but

if it starts to feel overwhelming, chat to a travel agent.

Not only can they help tailor a trip to suit your budget

and preferences, but they can also give you advice on

routes, local attractions and the best time to travel to

your dream destination.

Wherever your honeymoon takes you, bask in the glow of

that just-married feeling. It doesn’t matter what the setting

is—here’s a certain kind of magic to being with your

person, outside of the context of ordinary life, having just

taken such a momentous step together, the rest of your

lives stretching ahead of you.

we have to keep doing it, or else we’re lost and

love is dead and humanity should just pack it in.

Cos love is the best thing we do.”
