DUST EXTRACTION

DCE delivers extraction excellence for

Compass Windows & Doors

Compass Windows & Doors, based in

Londonderry, is Ireland’s premier manufacturer

of timber, aluminium, PVCu and Alu-Clad windows

and doors. Established in 1977, the company has

experienced significant growth and development.

One such development was

the acquisition of two stateof-the-art

machines from

SCM: a new CNC router along

with a complex Windowflex

machining cell, designed to perform

all operations required for producing

window frames from solid timber.

With the addition of these machines,

Compass needed to re-evaluate its dust

extraction systems. As such, the company

enlisted the expertise of Dust Control

Environmental (DCE) Ltd to design,

manufacture and install a compliant

dust extraction system.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

• The existing cyclone dust collectors

were undersized, necessitating a

more efficient system to handle

the new machines.

• Compliance with the latest EPA

(Environmental Protection Law)

regulations.

• Management of energy consumption

and alignment with sustainability goals.

• Ensuring the safe operation of

extraction equipment in a combustible

atmosphere.

• Minimising production downtime by

commissioning the new machinery

before the dust extraction system

was fully operational.

• Integration of existing machinery

into the new system.

• Removal of the old cyclone units.

HOW DCE MET THESE REQUIREMENTS

Dust Control Environmental Ltd meticulously

planned the dust extraction system and

installation process in order to minimise

production interruptions.

To ensure the CNC and Windowflex

machines could be commissioned on

schedule, DCE provided a stock ATEX dust

extraction filter at short notice. This allowed

the machines to remain operational while

awaiting the new system.

Enhanced dust control was achieved

through the installation of a DCE Envirojet

W-Series, a negative pressure filter unit with

ATEX adaptations to ensure safe operation

in an explosive-risk environment.

The Envirojet W-Series features an

E-performance panel, which monitors

machine usage and adjusts the cascading fan

function to meet operational requirements.

This process can deliver energy savings

of up to 50% without compromising

suction efficiency.

During installation, DCE linked the new

extraction system to the older machines

and removed two outdated cyclone filters

free of charge while their fitters were on-site.

THE BENEFITS

DCE provided a comprehensive, end-to-end

service, handling design, manufacturing and

installation, including ducting, monitoring

and control systems.

The DCE Envirojet W-Series will ensure

highly efficient dust extraction across

processing areas, maintaining clean,

healthy air for workers. Equipment and

machinery will also be protected from

dust ingress, reducing maintenance time

and improving housekeeping.

The E-performance monitoring system

optimises fan usage, regulating speed and

function based on the number of operational

machines. This results in significant energy

savings year after year.

Production downtime was minimised

due to the temporary ATEX filter, enabling

a smooth transition from the old to the

new dust extraction system.

The advanced Envirojet W-Series dust

collector, with its ATEX modifications,

ensures compliance with EPA regulations

while providing safe and efficient operation.

CLIENT’S COMMENTS

Managing Director of Compass Windows

& Doors, Michael O’Kane, commented:

airflow that pulls airborne pollutants

into integrated filtration units, ensuring

a cleaner and safer working environment.

These tables are widely used in

metalworking, woodworking and other

industries where dust and fumes are

generated during work processes.

Downdraft tables are essential

because, in addition to reducing

workers’ exposure to harmful

contaminants, they also help industries

comply with strict air quality regulations.

Unlike general ventilation systems,

downdraft tables prevent pollutants from

spreading, which protects both employees

and equipment. By minimising airborne

dust, they also extend the lifespan of

nearby machinery, thus contributing

to overall operational efficiency.

BWF COLUMN

How proposed building regulation changes

could impact external doorset

& window manufacturers

In this article, BWF Technical Director Kevin Underwood

provides a summary of the key proposals, expected

timelines, and what joinery manufacturers need to

prepare for in the coming months

The UK Government is considering

changes to Approved Document

L and Approved Document Q,

which could significantly impact

manufacturers of external

doorsets and windows.

Proposed updates to Document L

would alter how U-values are declared,

while potential amendments to Document

Q could introduce stricter security standards.

These changes may require manufacturers

to adjust their testing, certification and

compliance processes.

CHANGES TO APPROVED DOCUMENTS L

(CONSERVATION OF FUEL AND POWER)

& Q (SECURITY – DWELLINGS)

Manufacturers of external doorsets and

windows should be aware of two potential

changes to England’s building regulations

that could significantly impact their products.

The first change concerns Approved

Document L, where last year’s Future

Homes Standard consultation proposed

a modification to how U-values are declared

for external joinery. The second relates

to a potential amendment to Approved

Document Q, which could introduce

a requirement for all entrance doorsets

and accessible windows to meet enhanced

security standards.

APPROVED

DOCUMENT L –

U-VALUE CHANGES

The consultation on

the Future Homes

Standard – which ran

from 13 December

2023 to 27 March

2024 – proposed that

U-values be declared for

each individual external

doorset and window

supplied to new-build

projects. This would

replace the current

method, where a single

U-value – calculated

for a representative

or ‘model’ product –

is used across a range.

Joinery manufacturers

will need access to a tool

capable of calculating

U-values for each

product, factoring

in variables such as:

• Size & configuration

– e.g. opening vs.

fixed lights.

• Glazing type and glazing bars –

e.g. traditional vs. simulated, single

vs. multiple bars.

• Materials used – e.g. timber species,

timber-based materials and insulation

materials.

APPROVED DOCUMENT Q –

SECURITY REQUIREMENTS

The proposed changes – yet to undergo

consultation – would require all entrance

doorsets and accessible windows, whether

for new-builds or existing buildings, to

meet an enhanced security standard,

such as PAS 24:2022+A1:2024. Currently,

Approved Document Q only applies to

new-build dwellings.

Manufacturers will need to ensure

their product ranges are covered by

enhanced security testing or have access

to third-party test evidence – e.g. from

a hardware suppliern – that meets

building control requirements.

IMPLEMENTATION TIMELINE

In January, the Future Homes Hub

provided insights into the timing of

the Future Homes Standard and

changes to Approved Document L:

• The Home Energy Model (HEM)

– Replacing SAP, expected to be

available by May 2025.

• Publication of the new standard

– Likely in summer 2025 (June/July).

• Government processing – The final

regulations will require around five

months of processing before publication.

The changes to Approved Document Q

are yet to be consulted on, meaning any

impact on joinery manufacturers is unlikely

in the near future. The BWF has contributed

to the development of a revised Approved

Document Q; however, a consultation draft

won’t be released until the Home Office,

or The Ministry for Communities and Local

Government (MHCLG) if security follows the

lead of fire safety and moves department,

takes action.

NEXT STEPS FOR JOINERY

MANUFACTURERS

The BWF will continue to work with the

government and industry trade associations

to keep members informed of regulatory

changes. It will also support manufacturers

with guidance on meeting new requirements

as they come into effect.

Precision matters: why Humphrey & Stretton

chose to invest in HOMAG’s EDGETEQ S-500

For over 60 years, Humphrey & Stretton PLC has been a trusted name in manufacturing doors, frames, doorsets,

timber screens and associated joinery products

The HOMAG EDGETEQ

S-500 edgebander has

delivered measurable

benefits for Humphrey

& Stretton

Operating out of an

18,000sq.ft facility in

Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire,

Humphrey & Stretton, which

is a family-run business,

has supplied doors and frames for a wide

range of buildings, from The Shard in

London, to Lister Hospital in Stevenage.

The company upholds the highest

standards, knowing that in fire door

manufacturing, there can be no compromise

on quality. This commitment recently led

Humphrey & Stretton to invest in the

HOMAG EDGETEQ S-500 edgebander.

OUTDATED MACHINERY &

EVOLVING INDUSTRY NEEDS

As a leader in the fire doors industry,

Humphrey & Stretton recognises the

importance of staying ahead in what

is a competitive and evolving market.

“We’ve been investing in new machinery

to stay up-to-date with the latest

advancements,” explains Scott Humphrey,

Director at Humphrey & Stretton. “We

have a strong market position and a

solid reputation in the fire doors industry,

but we must never grow complacent.”

Their existing edgebander, from a

different manufacturer, had exceeded

its useful life and frequently broke down:

“Even when it was working, our previous

machine wasn’t designed for the thicker,

heavier materials we use,” Scott says.

“Rather, it was better suited to smaller

panels, which limited our capacity and

slowed production.”

To maintain their high standards, the

company sought a new edgebander that

could meet specific requirements while

improving efficiency and reliability.

WHY THE EDGETEQ S-500?

Humphrey & Stretton’s decision to invest

in the HOMAG EDGETEQ S-500 was driven

by a combination of machine quality, proven

performance and their previous positive

experience with HOMAG equipment.

“We already had HOMAG machinery,

so therefore knew their capabilities and

service,” Scott comments. “We looked at

other manufacturers, but the EDGETEQ

S-500 stood out. The machine’s quality

and product it produces is unmatched.”

Additionally, the partnership and proactive

support from HOMAG’s team, particularly

their Account Manager, played a crucial

role. “When you invest in a machine like

this, you’re not just thinking about the

purchase, you’re thinking about the

next decade: the service, aftercare and

maintenance,” Scott explains. “HOMAG’s

proactivity and expertise made them

the obvious choice.”

DEMONSTRATION & CONFIDENCE

To ensure the EDGETEQ S-500 met their

specific needs, Humphrey & Stretton’s

team visited HOMAG’s manufacturing

facility in Germany. Here, they were able

to test the edgebander using like-for-like

materials to simulate real-world conditions.

“Our materials are thicker than most,

so we needed to see how the machine

handled them,” Scott says. “It performed

exceptionally well. When a small issue

arose during the demo, the HOMAG team

resolved it quickly. That gave us confidence

– because in a live environment, issues

will naturally arise, regardless of how

good the machine is. What matters is how

quickly and effectively they can be fixed.”

A SEAMLESS TRANSITION

The EDGETEQ S-500’s installation was

meticulously planned in order to minimise

disruption: “Bringing in a machine of this

size always causes some level of upheaval,

but HOMAG kept it to an absolute

minimum,” Scott shares. Training was

conducted immediately after installation,

on-site, ensuring it was directly relevant

to live jobs. “This approach minimised

downtime and gave our team confidence

in handling all relevant scenarios.”

INCREASED CAPACITY, QUALITY

& EFFICIENCY

The EDGETEQ S-500 has delivered

measurable benefits for Humphrey &

Stretton, improving production capacity,

product quality and operational efficiency.

“The increased capacity means reduced

overhead rates, which helps us manage

costs better,” Scott explains. “Before,

breakdowns slowed everything down,

and we often had to add extra processes

to compensate. Now, the EDGETEQ S-500

handles everything with the utmost precision

and reliability.”

This precision is particularly crucial in fire

door manufacturing, where every product

must meet stringent safety standards.

“In our industry, there’s no margin

for error. We can’t risk our doors being

anything other than perfect. The EDGETEQ

S-500 delivers unmatched precision, and

our customers can attest to that.”

ADDED VALUE

For Humphrey & Stretton, their partnership

with HOMAG extends beyond the machinery

– it’s built on trust, reliability and long-term

commitment: “If we’re ever unsure about

something, we can pick up the phone and

get an answer straight away. Their aftercare

is second to none,” Scott confirms. “In this

industry, downtime costs a fortune. The

reliability of HOMAG machinery, coupled

with their team’s quick and direct support,

saves us a lot of money.”

LOOKING AHEAD

With the EDGETEQ S-500 fully operational,

Humphrey & Stretton is well-positioned to

continue its legacy of excellence in the fire

doors industry. The machine has not only

enhanced current operations, but also paved

the way for future growth and innovation.

“It’s been a brilliant investment,” Scott

concludes. “HOMAG has been a fantastic

partner, and we’re excited about what the

future holds.”

PROFESSIONAL WOODWORKING TODAY

MARCH 2025

Woodworking community views LIGNA 2025

as the year’s most important milestone

LIGNA, which is due to take place in Hanover, Germany from 26–30 May 2025, marks a crucial milestone

for the woodworking and wood processing industry as it moves toward a much-anticipated recovery

Three months before the trade

show’s 50th-anniversary edition,

more than 1,200 exhibitors from

around the world have already

secured 112,000sq.m of exhibition

space, demonstrating confidence in the

event despite challenging market conditions.

“LIGNA is currently almost at the same level

as the previous event,” says Dr. Jochen

Köckler, Chairman of the Executive Board at

Deutsche Messe AG. “Given the economic

climate, we’re very grateful for the trust

placed in LIGNA, and are convinced that the

world’s leading industry trade fair will drive

productivity and sustainability through

ground-breaking innovations, providing

much-needed motivation for investment.”

Dr. Bernhard Dirr, Managing Director

of the VDMA Woodworking Machinery

Association, Frankfurt am Main, commented

that: “Hardly any exhibitor skips LIGNA –

and for good reason. In challenging times,

direct engagement with customers is

essential to generating new investment

momentum through innovative solutions.

LIGNA is the platform where pioneering

technologies meet an international audience

of experts. It’s an unmissable opportunity

not only for manufacturers but also

for customers, as the industry’s future

course is set right here in Hanover.”

A CATALYST FOR RECOVERY

Stephanie Wagner, Head of LIGNA at

Deutsche Messe AG, sees the strong

response as a clear vote of confidence: “We

look forward to a dynamic 50th-anniversary

edition of LIGNA and are convinced that the

trade fair will once again serve as a powerful

catalyst for market confidence. LIGNA has a

history of reigniting industry momentum,

and we believe it’ll do so again this year.”

LIGNA’s global significance remains

unwavering, and constructive dialogue at

the event is more vital than ever. Samiron

Mondal, CEO of Siempelkamp Business

Unit Capital, emphasises: “LIGNA is the

ideal forum for meeting global customers,

showcasing our latest innovations, and

bringing the trade fair’s motto – ‘Linking

people, driving innovation’ – to life. We

also greatly benefit from exchanging

ideas during the event.”

Similarly, Rudolf Eickhoff,

Technical Managing Director of

Venjakob, highlights the show’s

importance: “Competition is fierce,

and some areas are experiencing

declining sales. It’s crucial to discuss

the latest sustainable production

methods to help customers remain

competitive. We firmly believe that

direct engagement at LIGNA fosters

trust and lays the foundation for

successful projects.”

NAVIGATING MARKET

UNCERTAINTY

Industry experts predict that

the woodworking and wood

processing industry, particularly

in Europe, could experience a

recovery in the second half of

2025; however, ongoing economic

challenges continue to create

uncertainty, thus delaying

crucial investment decisions.

Dr. Jochen Köckler remarks:

“We’re navigating politically tense

times, dealing with tariffs and

exchange rate fluctuations on an

unprecedented scale. The outcomes

of the German federal elections and

the U.S. presidential election will provide

clarity. Regardless of broader economic

conditions, the woodworking and wood

processing industry remains indispensable.

Wood, as a raw material, is the ultimate

symbol of CO₂ storage and sustainability.”

INDUSTRY, TRADE & FORESTRY

The three key themes of LIGNA 2025 –

connectivity, sustainable production

and engineered wood – are designed

to unite stakeholders across industry,

trade and forestry, as Stephanie Wagner

explains: “A digitally connected, sustainable

wood industry along the entire value chain,

with wood and wood-based materials

as materials of the future – this is the

vision that industry, craftsmanship and

forestry aim to realise together. These

three focus topics highlight the core

elements of industry transformation

and will be prominently featured

across all seven exhibition areas.”

PROFESSIONAL WOODWORKING TODAY

MARCH 2025

WEINIG MACHINERY FAQs:

The Toolroom & your Powermat

While the toolroom may not directly generate revenue, it’s an essential piece

of the puzzle, which allows a moulder to drive profitability for your business

A

well-organised and wellequipped

toolroom ensures

smoother and more efficient

mill operations, thus increasing

Powermats’ productivity. It’s

the beating heart of the operation –

something you simply can’t do without.

Q: HOW SHOULD A TOOLROOM

BE SET UP?

A: It’s recommended to divide a working

toolroom into two areas: a clean area

and a dirty area.

• The clean area should house

the Template Maker, PC and

measuring stand.

• The dirty area should include the

tool washing tank, grinders, and, if

relevant, the jointer preparation area.

Having tool trolleys for collecting and

delivering tools to the moulder is a

significant advantage. Additionally, ample

bench space, good lighting and an organised

system for storing templates, profiled

knives and blocks are absolutely essential.

Q: WHAT'S THE STARTING POINT

FOR A MODERN TOOLROOM?

A: For any toolroom without CNC grinding

facilities, the first step is drawing the profile

and making a template – without this,

nothing else can proceed.

For years, Weinig has provided Template

Makers and 2D CAD software to simplify

this process. A template can be created

from a CAD drawing provided by an

architect, a timber sample, or by drawing

the profile from scratch. Once the drawing

is in electronic format, it’s sent via a postprocessor

to the ISEL Template Maker –

a miniature 3-axis CNC router. This

ensures a precise and consistent template.

Q: WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER A

TEMPLATE MAKER?

A: Compared to making templates by

hand, a Template Maker is significantly

faster and far more accurate.

• Mouldings produced in multiples will

be perfect replicas.

• If a physical template is lost, an identical

replacement can be created effortlessly

from the saved file.

Q: WHAT PROFILE GRINDING

OPTIONS DOES WEINIG OFFER?

A: Weinig offers a range of profile grinders

depending on your tool preparation needs:

• The R960 is the industry workhorse,

available in multiple configurations,

from a basic manual grinder to an

advanced heavy-user specification,

complete with an automatic straight

knife grinding package.

• The R1000 CNC profile grinder is a

fully automatic solution that eliminates

the need for a template, generating

profiled knives directly from a CAD

drawing. This allows the operator

to focus on other tasks while the

machine works independently.

Q: WHAT ABOUT PLANER KNIVES

& SOLID PROFILE TOOLS?

A: The R980 is designed for this purpose

and is available in two versions: 1) A fully

automatic straight knife grinder; 2) A version

with an additional solid profile package.

The R980 guarantees high accuracy and a

superior finish on planer blocks, ensuring

the moulder delivers first-class results. It’s

particularly useful for mills with multiple

Powermats or those using multi-knife

blocks (z=8, 10, 12, etc.).

Q: IS TOOL MEASUREMENT ESSENTIAL,

& WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO DO IT?

A: Yes, tool measurement is absolutely

essential for maximising your moulder’s

efficiency.

By measuring axial and radial reference

points, the PowerCom or WMC setting

system can calculate the precise tool

position, which significantly reduces

setup times. Weinig offers both an

optical measuring stand plus a digital

measuring stand; this features a camerabased

system that provides numerous

advantages over traditional optical versions.

These are particularly beneficial for setting

up sawblade gangs for splitting applications

and measuring various tool types.

Q: WHAT SOFTWARE CONTROLS

THE SYSTEM?

A: The latest moulder setting system is

WMC (Weinig Machine Control), which

has replaced PowerCom. While a moulder

with WMC can run independently, most

mills use Moulder Master, a centralised

database of tools and profiles that

supports multiple moulders.

MOULDER MASTER INCLUDES:

• A powerful 2D CAD program for

designing profiles and defining tools.

• The ability to store and share profiles

across all moulders in a network.

• Integration with the R1000 CNC grinder,

which allows for automatic knife

production.

When combined, these components form

System Plus – a fully integrated tool

management solution.

Q: ARE THERE ANY TOOLS THAT

IMPROVE SAFETY & EFFICIENCY?

A: Yes, several simple yet effective tools

enhance both safety and ease of use:

• Tool carrying handles lock into the HSK

taper, making transoporting tools safer.

• The HSK setting gauge ensures perfect

alignment of knives in a block.

• A bench-mounted HSK tool holding

stand provides a secure grip on an

HSK tool, which frees up both hands

when working on the block.

Q: WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO KEEP

TOOLS CLEAN?

A: Removing resin build-up manually

is time-consuming, so a washing tank

is therefore highly recommended.

There are two types: 1) Ultrasonic

washing tanks, which use high-frequency

vibrations to agitate a water and detergent

solution, loosening resin from tools. Best

suited for HSK tools; 2) Standard washing

tanks – which are better suited to large

and heavy

hydro tools

– utilise a

spray system

with heated

detergent for

cleaning blocks.

From waste to warmth: Transped Limited

cuts costs with wood waste heater

A global logistics company has significantly reduced its waste

disposal costs and boosted its environmental credentials by

investing in a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology

The WT10 wood waste

heater following

installation in Transped

Limited’s production area

Transped Limited, based

in Northumberland, offers

a one-stop-shop service to

organisations moving goods

between Europe and the UK.

The company also operates a container

line between the UK and the Netherlands

and provides complementary warehousing

and distribution services.

Transped Limited generates a large

amount of wood waste from pallets

and packaging cases, which previously

required regular skip hire for disposal.

Faced with rising costs and the need for

a more sustainable solution, the company

began to explore the benefits of a wood

waste heater.

Export Packing Manager Daniel

Hooper researched options and

discovered Wood Waste Technology’s

range of UK-manufactured heaters. He

quickly recognised that investing in one

of these units would not only eliminate

wood waste disposal costs, but also

convert that waste into free heating for the

company’s 700sq.m production workshop,

which often became very cold in winter.

Following a site survey and additional

information, Wood Waste Technology’s

specialist engineers installed a WT10

wood waste heater in the production area.

Daniel explains: “It was amazing to

find one solution that solved two of our

business issues. We can now recycle all

the waste wood and convert it into energy,

saving us around £400-£500 a month on

skip hire. As a result, we now have a lovely

warm workshop with free heating. The wood

waste heater is very easy to use, and Wood

Waste Technology delivered everything they

promised. It really was one of the easiest

investment decisions we’ve made.”

Managing Director of Wood Waste

Technology, Kurt Cockroft, adds: “While

many of our clients are wood manufacturers,

there are many other businesses that can

benefit from a wood waste heater, as in

Transped’s case. A wood waste heater is

ideal for converting packaging and pallets

into free heating.”

Wood Waste Technology offers a full

range of wood waste heaters, from small

hand-fired units to larger fully automatic

systems. The company provides site surveys,

design, manufacturing, installation and

ongoing maintenance services. They also

service all types of wood waste heaters

and supply genuine spare parts at up to

60% lower cost than other suppliers.

In addition, Wood Waste Technology

is the UK’s official distributor for Gross

Apparatebau GmbH – a German

manufacturer of precision-engineered

shredders and briquetters. The company

also distributes Putzmaus boiler tube

cleaning systems, offering a powerful yet

gentle maintenance solution that’s quick

and easy to use, helping to increase boiler

efficiency and reduce operating costs.

Revolutionising MDF recycling:

W.Howard Pillo leads the way

W.Howard Pillo has taken a major step toward

launching a natural wood fibre insulation range,

having agreed terms with PAL, Italy, to build the

world’s first disaggregator – a ground-breaking

machine designed to recover high-quality fibres

from waste MDF materials.

The innovative technology behind the

disaggregator was developed by MDF

Recovery, from whom W.Howard Pillo

has licensed the UK and Ireland rights

to manufacture and sell natural wood

fibre insulation.

Once installed at W.Howard Pillo,

the disaggregator will convert waste

MDF into loose-fill insulation, which

will then be blown into panels used for

offsite timber-frame house construction

at customers’ factories.

By adopting the world’s first low-energy

solution for the effective recycling of waste

MDF, W.Howard Pillo is creating value from

a problematic waste stream that currently

has no other sustainable outlet. Until now,

waste MDF – generated by the furniture,

retail and construction sectors – has typically

ended up in landfill or been incinerated.

Jonathan Grant, Chairman of W.Howard

Group, said: “We’re delighted to be

partnering with PAL in the production of

this new disaggregator, which will allow

us to offer an energy-efficient, circular

solution to the long-standing challenge

of waste MDF disposal.

Crafting perfection: Plykea’s custom

kitchen designs powered by AXYZ

Founded in 2016 by two friends seeking an affordable yet high-quality solution for customising IKEA kitchen and

wardrobe cabinets, Plykea has revolutionised bespoke design by enhancing IKEA’s Metod, Pax and Platsa cabinets

with superior plywood doors, drawer fronts and worktops

Offering homeowners and

professionals a seamless

process that blends

affordability, sustainability

and craftsmanship, Plykea

combines IKEA’s functionality with bespoke

design elements, delivering a hand-crafted,

design-led aesthetic at a fraction of the cost.

Operating from its East London workshop,

Plykea serves a diverse client base, including

homeowners as well as B2B clients such

as architects, contractors and interior

designers. To achieve the precision and

scalability needed for its operations, Plykea

turned to AXYZ Routers – a pivotal decision

that’s defined its success.

SCALING PRECISION & QUALITY

In its infancy, Plykea relied on outsourcing

to meet production demands. However,

as demand grew, external manufacturing

limited the company’s ability to maintain

consistent quality, meet customisation

requests and scale operations efficiently.

To address these challenges, Plykea

sought an in-house manufacturing

solution that would:

• Ensure precision in cutting

and customisation;

• Maintain high-quality finishes aligned

with Plykea’s bespoke offerings;

• Increase production efficiency

zwhile reducing reliance on external

manufacturers.

ADOPTING AXYZ ROUTERS

Plykea brought production in-house in

2018 with its first CNC router. Initially, the

machine required manual tool changes,

which restricted efficiency. Recognising

the need for advanced automation, Plykea

upgraded to the AXYZ INFINITE CNC router,

which included automatic tool-changing

capabilities and advanced features tailored

to its needs. This investment transformed

their production process.

The AXYZ INFINITE router is a highly

operations, users can choose from highspeed

spindles ranging from 5HP to 15HP,

while knife-cutting options include tangential

and oscillating varieties for precise cutting

of soft goods materials.

Accoya timber sliding sash window sets security

benchmark with PAS 24:2022 certification

Accoya is pleased to announce the successful development of the first sliding sash window featuring slimline

glazing bars and a 44mm thick sash, designed to meet the requirements of PAS 24:2022

This achievement was made

possible through collaboration

with a consortium of stakeholders,

including Midland Joinery Services

Ltd, ERA and SD Hardware.

RIGOROUS TESTING STANDARD

PAS 24:2022 is a rigorous testing standard

designed to evaluate the enhanced security

performance of windows and doors,

ensuring their ability to withstand specified

levels of attack. The test simulates an

attempted break-in by a burglar using easily

concealable tools. A window or door

undergoes several assessments, including

mechanical load, manual attack and impact

testing – each aimed at identifying potential

vulnerabilities. Testing was conducted at

the independent UKAS-accredited test

house at ERA’s facility in Wolverhampton.

According to police statistics, 30% of

all opportunistic offenders in domestic

burglaries gain entry through a window.*

The Accoya sliding sash window’s innovative

design includes a ¾in radius end sash pulley,

Timber Series sash lift, Timber Series

high-security classic cam lock and sash

window screw locks.

Cheryl Varley, ERA Account Manager,

said: “It’s wonderful to see all stakeholders

working together to achieve this important

accolade. The independent UKAS test house

within the ERA facility is a valuable resource

for customers. Our test engineers rigorously

assess windows to provide consumers with

peace of mind.”

Mike Lewis, Technical Sales Manager

for Accoya UK and Ireland, commented:

“We’re thrilled that the Accoya sliding sash

window, which replicates a traditional and

historical design, has successfully passed this

rigorous security test. Thanks to Midland

Joinery, SD Hardware and ERA, homeowners

can now equip their homes with some of

the most secure timber windows available

on the market.”

Tim Heeley of Midland Joinery stated:

“We’re passionate about delivering topquality

joinery and ensuring our customers

are completely satisfied. It’s been a privilege

to contribute to the development and testing

of our Accoya range of heritage sliding sash

windows, which are now PAS 24 accredited.

This recognition gives our customers

confidence that their windows

meet the highest safety standards.”

Gary Ewings, Founder and Managing

Director of SD Hardware, added: “We’re

dedicated to supplying hardware that

meets the joinery industry’s highest

standards. Bringing this project together

with Accoya, ERA and Midland Joinery,

to achieve PAS 24:2022 in a sliding sash

window, is a breakthrough that allows

every joinery business to comply with

Part Q. This is something the industry

has needed for some time – the first sash

window to pass using Accoya is fantastic

news for the entire joinery sector.”

This year, SD Hardware is celebrating

10 years of dedication to the timber

window and door industry; to find out

Woodsafe launches study to long-term test

fire-retardant treated wood

Woodsafe Timber Protection has initiated the development of advanced methods for long-term testing of fire-retardant

treated wood at its state-of-the-art research laboratory. This initiative aims to further solidify Woodsafe’s leading

position in Sweden and Europe, providing reliable and durable fire-resistant treated wood products

For over 30 years, Woodsafe

Timber Protection has been a

trusted name in the fire-retardant

wood market. Based in Västerås,

Sweden, the company has

consistently worked to enhance safety in

construction, becoming Europe’s largest

manufacturer of fire-retardant treated

wood. Guided by the motto “Safer Living,”

Woodsafe focuses on improving safety for

both life and property while continuously

innovating to meet market demands.

ADVANCED FACILITIES

At the company’s cutting-edge fire and

development centre, Woodsafe Research

& Development AB (WRD), the next phase

of this innovation is underway. The privatelyowned

lab is one of the most advanced

facilities in Europe for testing fire-retardant

wood. Woodsafe is now leveraging WRD’s

capabilities to conduct long-term studies

and tests on this very material.

The ongoing research, led by Dr. Lazaros

Tsantaridis, a seasoned expert with 36

years’ experience at RISE, involves extensive

testing over many years. The fire-retardant

wood is subjected to ageing in both outdoor

field trials and artificial ageing chambers

with varying exposure conditions. Fire

testing is conducted using established

methods, including SBI (EN 13823),

Cone (ISO 5660-1) and SP Fire 105.

Peter Johnson, Product and Development

Manager at Woodsafe, emphasises the

importance of addressing the market’s

need for comprehensive information on

fire-retardant wood’s lifespan. The research

will not only provide Woodsafe with valuable

insights, but also benefit partners such as

RISE and others who will have access to

the findings.

Woodsafe has long advocated for EN

16755 EXT to be the standard requirement

for fire-retardant wood, which ensures

that this material is tested and classified to

endure exposure in damp and challenging

outdoor environments without

compromising fire protection due to

leaching. Woodsafe continues to play an

active role in the revision of this standard.

CEO Thomas Bengtsson reiterates the

company’s unwavering commitment to

safety, stating that ensuring fire-retardant

wood retains its protective properties

over time, particularly in challenging

environments, is critical. This commitment

is essential for safeguarding fire-protected

buildings and the people and property

they house.

Woodsafe’s new research initiative

underscores its dedication to advancing

fire-retardant technology and maintaining

the highest standards of safety and

performance. To find out more, visit
