SHANE

LYNCH

A JOURNEY

FROM BOYZONE

TO BELIEF

FOR MILLIONS OF FANS,

SHANE LYNCH WAS THE

“BAD BOY” MEMBER

OF BOYZONE, THE

IRISH CHART-TOPPING

BOYBAND THAT ROSE

TO FAME IN THE 1990S.

BUT BEHIND THE HUGE

SUCCESS OF BOYZONE,

SHANE’S REALITY TOLD

A DIFFERENT, MUCH

DARKER STORY.

4 HOPE

"I with nose rings, tattoos and a bit

was the extreme guy who stuck out

like a sore thumb. It was a squeakyclean

kind of band and there's me

of a swagger,” Shane shares. “I felt I had

to play up to all that because that was my

identity in the group.”

His rebellious behaviour, nicknamed

“Shanenanigans,” masked an inner

turmoil that grew over time and led

to an anger that he couldn’t shift. An

emptiness that all the parties, cars and

houses couldn’t fill. He wasn’t satisfied.

And eventually hit rock bottom.

Caught in a fearful spiral of destructive

habits and a fascination with the occult,

Shane knew life had to change.

He credits a close friend with

planting the seeds of curiosity about

Christianity. “I wasn’t looking for

religion,” Shane explains. “I was looking

for answers—something real that could

help me make sense of everything.”

Sitting on his own in the back of a

church one Sunday morning, he found

himself an observer as he watched

the people gather to worship and was

captivated by their sense of God and

community. This began a journey that

led him to commit his life to Jesus.

"I'm a born-again Christian. It's a

lifestyle, it's not a religion at all,” he says.

FAITH AND MENTAL HEALTH

For Shane, the music industry was

destructive and he felt a spiritual darkness

within it. “The world is a spiritual place

and there is a real dark spiritual influence

through the music industry,” he shares.

This void led him into a depressive

state but he holds no regret for his

past. Instead, seeing it as part of the

journey that brought him to where he

is today. He credits his Christian faith

with transforming his mental health,

helping him find peace and a new sense

of purpose.

“I owe everything to Christ. I’ve been

freed of everything and now pray that I

am placed in a position where I can help

bring others to Him.” Shane says, “Every

day is a brand new adventure. I’m a

HIS STORY IS A

REMINDER THAT

TRANSFORMATION

IS POSSIBLE.

better man for the faith which has been

placed in my heart.”

Speaking passionately about the

transformative impact of belonging to

a church community in Manchester,

Shane talks about how it has helped

create a desire to learn more about Jesus.

“I love what I get fed on a Sunday but

it’s not enough! I use my time in the

gym and when I’m in the car to listen

to Christian radio and that has given

me so much insight into how I should

be in the world and how Christ can be

recognisable in me.”

A BALANCED LIFE

Today, Shane’s life looks very different.

He reflects on his Boyzone days in a new

Sky documentary marking the band’s

25 th anniversary, and although traces

of his bad boy image remain, other

interviews and sources paint a picture of

a man whose priorities have now shifted.

His story is a reminder that

transformation is possible, no matter how

far gone you feel. “I’m not perfect, and I

don’t have it all figured out,” he admits.

Like many of the people we highlight in

our magazine, he is on a journey, and

while none of us are perfect, the truth

remains -there is a God who transforms

lives and meets us where we are.

If Shane’s story resonates with you,

and you’re struggling with questions of

identity, purpose, or mental health, there

is help available. Consider reaching out

to a trusted faith community, exploring

local support groups, or visiting

HopeForEveryHomeIreland.org/faith

for guidance and resources.

You don’t have to walk this journey

alone.

6 HOPE

For me, being irrepressible is about

having the capacity and flexibility to deal

with life’s curve balls but also to grab

life’s opportunities with both hands.

AN

IRREPRESSIBLE

JOURNEY

INTERVIEW

WITH

CATHY

MADAVAN

WE WANTED TO CATCH UP WITH CATHY MADAVAN

ABOUT HER BOOK IRREPRESSIBLE, AND TO HEAR MORE

ABOUT HER JOURNEY TOWARDS WRITING AND LIVING

IRREPRESSIBLY AND WHY SHE BELIEVES WE CAN ALL

GROW IN RESILIENCE AND COURAGE.

HOPE 7

I believe we unwrap

our gifts and passions

one step at a time; we

probably build our

purpose rather than

suddenly discover it.

Cathy, your book is an open

invitation to being irrepressible.

QWhat does being ‘irrepressible’

mean to you?

For me, being irrepressible is about

having the capacity and flexibility to

deal with life’s curve balls but also to

grab life’s opportunities with both

hands. These 12 principles for living

a courageous, resilient and fulfilling

life are certainly not about having

a perfect life or feeling like you’re

nailing everything all the time! That’s

unachievable. But if we know our values,

dig deep and make wise choices, we

can often achieve more than we realise,

despite the challenges we face.

Q

So, how do you help people to

know what their purpose is, so

that they can life a genuinely

fulfilled life?

I sometimes feel we are sold a myth that

we somehow download our purpose in

our twenties and then work on that until

we ‘achieve our dreams’, but that is not

my experience. Generally, I believe we

unwrap our gifts and passions one step

at a time; we probably build our purpose

rather than suddenly discover it. So, I

am still on that journey of discovery

and I want to encourage people as they

navigate that journey too.

Q

The book is very much written in a

way that will be accessible to people

of all faiths and none. Can you

explain a bit more about this decision?

My faith is extremely important to me

and forms the basis of everything I write

and speak about. But the principles in

this book will hopefully apply in many

spheres: in business, in leadership, in the

home and in almost any area where we

have influence. Everybody wants to live

life in all its fullness, and God’s truth and

values hopefully permeate the pages. I

hope and pray this book will go far and

wide!

8 HOPE

Q

There are 12 principles explored

in Irrepressible. Which would you

say is your favourite?

Tough question! One of the most

memorable chapters is called, ‘When the

horse is dead, dismount!’. This principle

considers how sometimes we need grit

and persistence, but other times, we just

have to face facts: the horse is dead, the

project is over, the season has passed –

it is time to dismount! Most of us find

endings hard, so I hope this chapter

helps people deal with those transitions.

And which of the 12 was (or

indeed is!) the hardest to learn?

QFor me, the principle called, ‘Fill

your own tank’ has been a steep learning

curve. We all have a drain on our energy

tank, where our resilience drips away

due to the demands and busyness of life.

And I have almost let my own tank run

dry too often. This principle challenges

us to learn how to fill up that tank

with rhythms and behaviours that will

hopefully also maintain healthy levels.

We won’t ever be irrepressible if we’re

running on empty.

Q

What would you say to someone

who wants to grow in resilience

but just doesn’t know where

to start?

I really hope this book will be a toolkit

with principles that build resilience and

courage in the reader. However, there

is a specific chapter called, ‘Commit

to resilience training’. My experience

tells me that as we train to lift smaller

weights well, we increase our capacity

to lift heavier ones. Occasionally we are

thrown a weight that feels too heavy

to bear, and that’s okay to admit. I

share the story of some of our heaviest

and most challenging burdens in this

book. But while life doesn’t always get

easier, we can always get stronger. Not

every opportunity will appear or every

problem disappear when we want, but

I believe it is still possible to build a

fulfilling, courageous and irrepressible

life that genuinely makes a difference.

Occasionally we are

thrown a weight that

feels too heavy to bear,

and that’s okay to admit.

God doesn’t discard us when we break.

KINTSUGI

RESTORING

THE BEAUTY IN

BROKENNESS

IN A CULTURE OBSESSED WITH PERFECTION,

THE ANCIENT JAPANESE ART OF KINTSUGI

OFFERS A COUNTERCULTURAL TRUTH:

BEAUTY CAN COME FROM BROKENNESS.

COULD THIS SIMPLE YET PROFOUND

ART FORM REVEAL A DEEPER STORY OF

RESTORATION, HOPE, AND FAITH?

T

he doors swing open

and light footsteps

pad across the bare

wooden floor. A pot is

lifted and carefully placed

on the table. At first glance,

it seems ordinary - a

simple vessel to hold the

food. But as it is passed

from hand to hand, flashes

of gold catch the sunlight,

scattering warm reflections

across the room.

“Kintsugi,” they said.

Joining with gold.

The Japanese art of

Kintsugi, the practice of

repairing broken pottery

with a lacquer and dusting

it with a gold powder, is an

ancient one. Not hiding and

disguising the breakages

but highlighting them.

Making them beautiful as

the gold glistens between

the broken edges.

10 HOPE

HOW DOES OUR

PERFECTION-OBSESSED

SOCIETY LEARN FROM

THIS BEAUTIFUL ART?

Because the reality is

that we live in a modern

society that strives for

ageless beauty and Instaworthy

ideals. Nothing

that is broken, worn or

even last season is deemed

share-worthy nevermind

celebrated.

We live in a disposable

culture. We are ingrained

to discard an object and

toss it aside when it breaks.

In the UK alone, 350,000

tonnes of clothes end up

in landfill every year and

the average person wears

a garment only 7 to 10

times before discarding it.

Yet this throwaway culture

doesn't just apply to

belongings - it is shaping

how we see ourselves.

WHAT DO WE DO WHEN

IT’S NOT AN OBJECT BUT

US THAT FEELS BROKEN?

The Bible offers a similar

perspective on brokenness.

We are told that God’s

power is made perfect in

weakness. The book of

Corinthians tells us, “But

we have this treasure in

jars of clay, to show that

the surpassing power

belongs to God and not

to us.” Jars of clay were

The Christian

faith invites us

to bring our

brokenness

to God.

simple earthenware pots

used in ancient times to

store the ordinary everyday

essentials of life. By nature

these would be easy to

break, yet the beauty of

faith lies in the fact that

God doesn’t discard us

when we break. Instead,

He fills our cracks with His

strength and transforms

them into something

extraordinary.

HE DOESN'T ASK US TO

BE PERFECT - THIS VERSE

FROM CORINTHIANS

TELLS US THAT HIS POWER

IS MADE PERFECT IN OUR

WEAKNESS. HIS POWER

CAN HOLD OUR BROKEN

PARTS TOGETHER.

Patrick Regan of Kintsugi

Hope says, “The gold makes

a feature of the cracks

instead of hiding them. All

of us have broken pieces,

but instead of hiding

them, we can learn from

them. We can discover

treasure in our scars."

This perspective

shifts how we see our

struggles. Instead of a

source of shame, our scars

become part of a greater

SCAN

story - one of restoration,

resilience, and redemption

through Jesus Christ. The

Christian faith invites us

to bring our brokenness to

God, trusting that He can

transform even our deepest

wounds into beauty and

purpose through His love

and grace.

SO WHAT IF THIS

INVITATION WAS

EXTENDED TO YOU TODAY?

What if your scars, your

challenges and your pain

could tell a story of hope

and healing through the

power of Jesus? Just as

Kintsugi transforms broken

pottery into something

exquisite, Jesus offers

the chance to restore the

broken parts of our lives,

making them a testimony

of His goodness.

If you’re feeling lost,

worn out, or in need

of support, know that

you’re not alone. Jesus

offers hope, healing and

wholeness. This could be

the beginning of a journey

to discover the treasure

God can create from your

scars.

G

rowing up in a

Cork, Padraig’s

early experiences

of God were through

exposure to the Old

Testament, New Testament,

Psalms and gospel readings.

When he finally decided to

follow Jesus, his first port of

call was to return to Mass

on a Sunday morning.

“Suddenly all those

readings were jumping

out at me off the page,” he

recalls. “It all made sense

except the style of worship.”

A trusted work colleague,

recommended some

churches for him to attend

whilst adding, “You’ll never

find the perfect church, and

if you do - don’t join!”

In his search for

answers, he attended a

Christianity Explored

course. “I loved the banter,

the tough questions,

and the discussions,” he

shares. “Some of my

questions might have been

a bit controversial, but

everyone was patient.”

Over the years, Padraig

recognised that people

had influenced his faith

in different ways. “I have

been surrounded by

Catholics, Presbyterians,

Church of Ireland,

Baptists, Charismatics

and Pentecostals,” Padraig

reflects. “I realised that

some had planted seeds,

some had watered them but

really it was God who had

been making them grow.”

That openness to

conversation, exploration

and to God transforming

his thinking has helped

shape his journey. But

faith hasn’t always been

straightforward. “I often

have extreme moments of

doubt when surrounded

by people with extreme

moments of certainty,” he

admits. In those times, he

turns to solitary prayer

and scripture, finding

reassurance in the quiet

and through God’s word.

“When others question

me, it helps me question

myself, and I often find the

answer in His word.”

Now his faith is deeply

intertwined with his work.

Hosting two shows on

Life FM; ‘Jazz Journeys’

and the Sunday morning

reflection program -

Padraig hopes to “shine

a light” for listeners,

offering moments of

encouragement and peace.

With his wife, Evanne,

he also runs Unbound.ie,

a gift shop in Cork with

probably Ireland’s largest

Bible section. “It amazes

me how many people

pop in to buy a candle

and leave with a Bible, a

SCAN

candle and a mug,” Padraig

reflects. “It makes my day

knowing that in some way

God can help them grow

too through His word.”

For those unsure

about faith, Padraig offers

simple but profound

encouragement: You

are good enough. And if

worry weighs you down,

he points to the words of

Jesus in Matthew 6 - “Look

at the birds of the air…

are you not much more

valuable than they?” His

own journey has been

shaped by questions,

solitary prayer and trust in

God’s Word and he hopes

others will find the same

than a programme —

it’s a movement toward

freedom and wholeness.

FREED

BEYOND

FOR MANY THE JOURNEY THROUGH

AN EATING DISORDER (ED) CAN FEEL

CONFUSING, ISOLATING AND WITHOUT

HOPE. FREED BEYOND STEPS INTO

THAT JOURNEY ALONGSIDE PEOPLE,

EQUIPPING THEM WITH THE TOOLS,

KNOWLEDGE AND SUPPORT TO MOVE

TOWARDS FREEDOM AND COMPLETE

RECOVERY FROM EATING DISORDERS.

ith a mission

rooted in hope,

Wcompassion and

growth, Freed Beyond

helps not just the sufferer

but those who love and

care for them too.

THE FREED

FOUNDATIONAL COURSE

Freed, which stands for

freedom, recovery and

education from eating

disorders, is a 6-week

programme that addresses

not only the physical

aspects of EDs but also the

emotional, mental, and

relational

roots.

Groups are

small, with

no more

than 12

participants,

fostering an

intimate and

supportive

environment

for both

sufferers and

carers.

Julie Joyce, a

CBT therapist and

one of Freed Beyond’s

directors, shares how

18 HOPE

the programme fills a

significant gap in eating

disorder care. “Hospital

systems are often only

able to manage risk,”

Julie explains, “but Freed

Beyond can look deeper,

asking, ‘What is the why

behind the what?’”

The programme

is led by a mix of

professionals and

people with lived

experience of

EDs. This unique

combination

of expertise

and personal

understanding

creates an

atmosphere

of trust and

connection,

where

participants

are fully

supported

as they

work

through

the 6 weeks of

content.

Every aspect

of the 6-week

programme

is designed to

inform, educate

and resource

participants. With a

mix of therapeutic

content, stories,

CBT techniques and

nutritional education, it

empowers participants

to understand the

root causes of eating

disorders and develop

confidence to continue

their journey beyond

the course.

HOPE THROUGH

SHARED STORIES

One of the most

powerful aspects of the

Freed programme is

“Story Night,” where

people share their

journeys of healing and

transformation. For many

participants, these stories

are eye-opening. “People

come and speak of their

experiences and give

their perspectives,” Julie

shares. “The night is very

enlightening for those

who come and revelatory

for people to know that

full recovery is possible.”

FAITH AT THE CORE

Freed Beyond also

ensures inclusivity. While

the programme is deeply

rooted in Christian

principles, it is designed

to be accessible to people

of all faiths or none at all.

“We have two strands,”

Julie explains. “One where

faith is openly discussed

in church or Christian

settings and another

where it’s not explicit but

still present in how we

pray and prepare for each

group.” This approach

makes Freed Beyond

a welcoming space for

everyone, regardless of

their beliefs.

FREEDOM, RECOVERY,

AND WHOLENESS

At its heart, Freed Beyond

is about helping people

rediscover their identity

and break free from the

lies that eating disorders

often tell. Faith in Jesus

is a foundation under all

the programmes, “for

me,” Julie says, “John 8:32

is a guiding verse from

the Bible: ‘You will know

the truth, and the truth

will set you free.’” She

explains how EDs can trap

people in deception about

their worth and identity.

By reframing these

thoughts and focusing on

what is true and noble,

participants can begin to

walk towards freedom.

The feedback from

participants underscores

the programme’s impact.

One mother shared that

she had learned more in

the first week of Freed

Beyond than in a year of

hospital visits with her

daughter. “That’s why we

do this,” Julie says. “To give

people hope and show

them that full recovery is

possible.”

Freed Beyond is more

than a programme—it’s

a movement toward

freedom and wholeness.

For anyone standing

at rock bottom, it’s a

reminder that there is

always hope, always light

and always the possibility

of recovery.

Freed Beyond offers support,

resources, and a pathway

to recovery. Enter our

WE DON’T GO TO CHURCH,

WE DON’T DO CHURCH.

WE ARE THE CHURCH.

DWELLINGS

DWELLINGS IS A MOVEMENT OF ORDINARY

PEOPLE MEETING IN HOMES AND SIMPLE

SPACES, CREATING COMMUNITIES BASED

AROUND THE PRESENCE OF JESUS.

For many, the word "church"

brings to mind a building, but

as David Legge, the UK and

Ireland advisor and contributor

for Dwellings, explains, “We

don’t go to church, we don’t do

church. We are the church.”

In Ireland, traditional church

attendance is at an all-time low,

with studies showing that less than

5% of young people regularly attend

services. Many feel disconnected from

institutional religion and may never

walk through the door of a conventional

church building, seeing it as outdated or

irrelevant to modern life. A recent article

in the Irish Times stated, “The younger

generation are flocking away from

the church” yet are “becoming more

spiritual.”

Despite the downward trends in

church attendance there still seems to be

a deep hunger for spiritual connection.

Dwellings is one example of this,

helping people meet in smaller,

relational communities to experience

20 HOPE

FIND OUT

MORE

faith in a simpler way.

Gathering in homes is not new

- it was the foundation of the early

church. But over time, church

became more about structures

and programmes, sometimes

making faith feel distant or overly

formal. Dwelling’s strapline, “The

oldest form of church can be new

again,” reflects both the ancient

practice of house church and the

fact that home-based gatherings

can be another way for people to

experience community and grow

in faith.

Rather than the focus of a

gathering being a sermon or a

charismatic speaker, Dwellings

fosters smaller communities

where ordinary people, from all

walks of life, meet around His

presence. David Legge describes

it as a “beautiful intimacy”

where people come together in

an authentic way – they are the

church, functioning like family.

This sense of family offers

a welcome antidote to the

epidemic of loneliness which

the World Health Organization

has identified as a global health

crisis. The beautiful intimacy

that Legge describes helps to

foster relationships around the

presence of Jesus, where everyone

feels known and valued. This

deep sense of connection not

only combats loneliness but also

reflects a growing desire for faith

to be lived out in a shared way.

For some, smaller gatherings

like these provide a contrast

to the traditional structure of

a service, which is often led

from the front. As Dwellings

puts it, “In a world with access

to all kinds of teaching and

information, we recognise we

can learn it all and still not know

God.” Dwellings is “devoted to

learning the Scriptures, but we

intentionally invite the Spirit to

bring life and power to the Word,

so our lives might be transformed.”

A place for connection and

transformation, rather than

simply acquiring knowledge.

It encourages everyone to

take part, through participation

and discussion.

A typical Dwellings gathering

might involve reading scripture

and sharing personal reflections

with an approach that mirrors

how Jesus often taught - through

dialogue, asking questions, and

engaging people in meaningful

conversation.

While these smaller

gatherings provide a space for

open and honest conversations,

Dwellings also values the

wider church body within

traditional structures. Rather

than positioning itself as

the only model of church,

Dwellings partners with larger

congregations to cultivate small

group settings and encourage

participation - honouring and

acknowledging that God is at

work throughout the church as a

whole.

David explains, “It’s about

helping everyone realise the

beauty of the small and how

what happens in these settings

can be invaluable in people’s

experience of church.”

Ultimately, Dwellings is

about creating spaces where

people encounter Jesus in a

fresh, transformative way. As the

church in Ireland continues to

evolve, different expressions of

faith are emerging. Dwellings is

one such option - offering a way

for people to encounter Jesus in a

fresh and transformative way.

CREATING

MASTERPIEC

STORY

TIME

READ TIME 4 MINS

Are you a budding

artist? Do you love to

draw, paint or make things?

Maybe you proudly hang your

pictures on a noticeboard, fridge or a

special place in your bedroom.

I love making things too, especially from

items that are broken or are no longer

needed - recycling something old and

giving it new life.

Recently, I

went to a sea glass

workshop. Sea glass is

glass of all different colours that have

been tossed about by the waves. When

it is eventually found on the beach, it is

smooth like a pebble. At the workshop

we used sea glass of different shapes

and sizes to create pictures. When I had

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU

ARE GOD'S MASTERPIECE?

HE MADE YOU WITH CARE

AND PURPOSE.

finished mine I was so proud. I had made

something beautiful out of what other

people might call rubbish!

My kids love making things too. My

daughter Imogen creates beautiful

drawings and patiently sews cross-stitch

pictures which she proudly presents to us.

My son Nathaniel uses his Lego to make

robots, vehicles and buildings rushing to

show us his latest handiwork as soon as

it’s finished.

Have you ever felt that joy after finishing

something you have made?

Well, did you know that you are God's

masterpiece? God looks at you with

the love and delight that we look at our

creations with. He made you with care

and purpose, designing each and every

aspect of who you are - your hair colour,

personality and even whether or not you

like broccoli!

The Bible says in Psalm 139:13-14, ‘For you

formed my inward parts; you knitted me

together in my mother's womb. I praise you,

for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Wonderful are your works; my soul

knows it very well.’

But God’s love doesn’t stop there. He

loves you so much that he sent His Son

Jesus to die for the wrong things you have

done.

Romans 5 v 8 tells us ‘But God shows his

love for us in that while we were still sinners,

Christ died for us.’

And when you ask Jesus to come into

your heart He doesn’t stop at loving you

- He actually makes you even better than

before!

2 Corinthians 5 v 17 says ‘Therefore, if

anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The

old has passed away; behold, the new has

come.’

Just like my sea glass picture, God takes

every part of us and transforms us into

someone new.

So the next time you make something

remember that God designed everything

about you and he loves you!

FAITH

ON THE FIELD

AS THE RUGBY SEASON CAPTIVATES

FANS, THE TOP PLAYERS ARE PUSHED TO

THEIR LIMITS. BUT FOR ANDREW TRIMBLE

AND JOSH VAN DER FLIER, THE ULTIMATE

VICTORY ISN’T MEASURED IN TROPHIES -

IT’S FOUND IN FAITH.

24 HOPE

Rugby fans are set to

enjoy an actionpacked

2025, with

the Six Nations

Championship

setting the scene for an

iconic summer as the

British and Irish Lions

embark on their tour of

Australia. Irish fans will no

doubt bring their trademark

passion to every match,

voices raised as Ireland’s

Call and The Fields of Athenry

echo around packed

stadiums.

These championships

aren’t just any ordinary

tournaments – they are a

battle of strength, speed,

and spirit. The world’s top

teams clashing in rugby’s

most thrilling competitions.

With high-impact

tackles, precision kicks and

the onslaught of relentless

scrums, rugby is one of the

most demanding sports

played - often described as

both brutal and beautiful.

Every player needs to be

at the peak of their fitness;

strong and fast with a

seemingly endless supply

of endurance - while also

demonstrating agility and

mental toughness to cope

with the strain and demands

of 80 minutes on the pitch.

But before they step

onto the pitch, what fuels

these athletes? How do they

prepare - not just physically,

but mentally and spiritually,

for the intensity of the game?

HOPE 25

Rugby may

be a game of

power, speed,

and strategy, but

for players like

Andrew Trimble

and Josh van der

Flier, it is also

an opportunity

to live out their

faith.

Former Irish

international Andrew

Trimble offered an

answer that may come

as a surprise to some.

“As a Christian, the best

preparation before a game

for me is to sit quietly by

myself and read through

Psalm 84. Part of that

Psalm says, ‘Better is one

day in your courts than a

thousand elsewhere; I would

rather be a doorkeeper in the

house of my God than dwell

in the tents of the wicked.’

“It’s such a blessing for

me to play for Ulster and

for Ireland, and I do love

it, but I would far rather be

in heaven, and that verse

reminds me of the fact.”

This prayerful prematch

perspective keeps

his attitude in check,

reminding him that his

identity is rooted in

something far

greater than the

outcome of any

match. Win, lose,

or draw, his faith

in Christ is what

lasts forever.

Ireland’s

current

number 7,

powerhouse

Josh van

der Flier,

plays

as an

openside

flanker and

has a slightly different

pre-match routine. Known

in Leinster rugby circles

as ‘The Dutch Disciple’, his is

one that is a combination

of both high-energy and

calm.

“I have loads of little

parts of detail that are

part of my preparation. I

listen to beat music…loud

and pumped-up before

a game. As I drive to the

game, I play calm, religious

worship music…reflective

music that calms me down.

The peaceful music is just

like going to church. It

offers me that important

moment of calm.”

Van der Flier admits

that openly sharing his

faith doesn’t always come

naturally. A quiet, private

person, he carries small

reminders of his faith with

him every time he steps

onto the field.

“I wear a cross on my

wrist. I like it for myself…

a reminder that God is

there.” (Extract from ‘Faith:

In Search of Greater Glory in

Sport’ by Gerard Gallagher)

Rugby may be a game

of power, speed, and

strategy, but for players

like Andrew Trimble and

Josh van der Flier, it is

also an opportunity to live

out their faith. Despite

being fiercely competitive,

their greatest victory isn’t

found in winning scores or

trophies lifted - it’s found

in their faith in Jesus.
