Side Trip:
Saturday was one of those spring fever kind
of days that found us in the Iowa Great
Lakes area with an awkward amount of
time between an afternoon commitment and a
6:30 dinner reservation.
What does one do?
Take a drive around the
Lakes.
Here are some random
observations:
n Things look much
different when the trees
are bare. No leaves gives
you a much clearer
view of both houses
and lakes. We spotted a
tennis court I don’t ever
recall seeing before, as
well as a darling playhouse
along a stretch of
M0RN,
W,GNER
Lake Shore Drive that I’ve traveled countless
times.
n Ice fishermen are brave souls. There was a
large area of open water on East Okoboji Lake
near the Upper Gar bridge. Just a bit up the road
we had a clear line of site to a still-frozen bay
where two guys were enjoying an afternoon of
fishing. I’m sure they checked conditions and
knew everything was safe, but it was unsettling
to me all the same.
n Changes are underway at the Emporium
and Okoboji Boat Works. It’s one of those happy/sad
experiences when you recall memories
at those landmark locations. I’m not against
change, so I’m being optimistic about what
those spaces will look like in the future.
n Wild turkeys and deer are everywhere. We
must have seen 50 deer and easily 100 turkeys.
I counted 35 turkeys in one flock, both sides of
the road and ON the road. They were not at all
bothered by a car wanting a share of the road.
Although I love the personality of the lake in
all seasons, I admit that currently I am eager
for spring rains to wash away winter’s dirt and
grime, bring out the green grass and encourage
those first flowers.

SIX DECADES
An art exhibit with a museum vibe.
That’s what visitors will get when
they walk into the Goodenow Gallery
at the Pearson Lakes Art Center.
Through May 10 they’ll see “Celebrating
60 Years of the Pearson Lakes Art Center”
featuring works of art from the gallery collections
as well as excerpts from the book
“Erasing Gray: The Origin and Story of the
Pearson Lakes Art Center” by Jonathan
Reed.
Visual arts director Danielle Clouse Gast
says she has a newfound appreciation for
museum curators after putting together this
show.
“I realized how much I appreciate anyone
who does museum exhibits because it’s just
a different ballgame from a gallery show
when you’ve got this education piece with
it,” Clouse Gast said. “The foundation of the
exhibit is the book by Jonathan Reed and
we pulled pages to enlarge and hang in the
gallery then pulled pieces from our collection
to place alongside what was written.”
So viewers will see a 1960s piece of art
from the gallery collection alongside information
about what was happening at the
art center during that time frame.
Artist renditions of the art center’s time in
the affectionately named “little red building”
are on display as are pieces from the
Russian Impressionism collection and a
print by Andy Warhol.
The exhibit adds another layer of interest
with audio from The Okoboji Project podcast.
“We’ll add that piece as we get closer to
the opening, which will be April 3, so that
will be playing in the background and so as
you’re walking through the space it really
immerses you in a little bit of the art center
history,” Clouse Gast said.
An immersive experience will guide
visitors through the journey of the Pearson
Lakes Art Center. F

!elcome to the world of
watercolor.
The Iowa Watercolor
Society has works of its fantastic
artists on display at Arts on Grand in
downtown Spencer.
The traveling exhibit was previously
in Storm Lake and will be up
through March 28 at Arts on Grand
before it makes its way to Cedar
Rapids.
“We’re pretty lucky to have an
exhibit like this here in our small
town,” said Megan Pedersen, executive
director at Arts on Grand. “They
actually contacted me last December
and wanted us to be part of this
year’s lineup and were really excited
for us to be a part of it.”
The exhibit last made a stop in
Spencer four years ago.
Anyone who didn’t see it then will
get another chance at an up close
look a stunning watercolor works of
art with subject matter ranging from
flowers and farm animals to street
scenes and portraits.
“With most people watercolor is
the first medium you work with as
a kid and I didn’t realize how much
detail you can achieve in watercolor,”
Pedersen said. “There is one
painting here with the light hitting
these wet bricks on the street – it’s
gorgeous!”
And that’s just one of many pieces
to enjoy during your next stop at
Arts on Grand. F

Wine and food paired together
make each taste better. It’s this lesson
that the owners of Round Lake Vineyards
& Winery will be seeking to share with
their upcoming Wine Pairing Dinner at 5
p.m. Saturday, March 22.
“I look at a wine pairing dinner as an
experience in food and wine and an
opportunity to enjoy flavors that are
meant to react with each other. Food is
presented visually in a fine dining manner,
but even more importantly I use the
flavors in food to accentuate and enhance
the wine,” said Scott Ellenbecker, one of
the owners of Round Lake Vineyards &
Winery. “Guests will enjoy five courses
of food with a wine that highlights each
dish’s sweet, salty, bitter, sour or umami
flavors. People don’t go away hungry or
thirsty. Even if someone doesn’t like one
dish, there’s plenty of food.”
For those looking for a specific menu,
you will be disappointed. Ellenbecker
keeps the menu and wine pairings secret
until the night of the event so people
should just plan on enjoying the ride.
“I usually don’t give too many details
on the menu. The ingredients and flavors
are part of the thrill in the moment rather
than assumptions of preconceptions of
what we’ve tasted in the past. I will say my
plan is to start with an appetizer of oysters
on the half shell. I’ve got a couple recipe
options and haven’t settled on one yet.
I’ve lived in Japan and those memories
have me leaning toward citrus and earthy
herb flavors that would go really well
with a minerally, crisp white wine,” Ellenbecker
said. “The third and four courses
are the main course. There will be red
and white meat, and I don’t do chicken.
The second course is a salad, soup or an
amuse of some kind. I’ve done simple
salads with bright flavorful ingredients
and unique bites like foie gras (duck liver
pate). The final course is dessert. It could
be pastry or chocolate or creamy. You’ll
have to come to find out.”
Guests who come to this event will
get their belly filled with wonderful food
and wine, but their brains will also be fed
as Ellenbecker makes sure to share his
knowledge.
“I look at this event as a learning experience
for the guests and myself. Some of
these dishes I’ve made before, some I’ve
never made. I come up with the menu
by interpreting what my palate translates
from each wine and selecting ingredients
for each course,” Ellenbecker said.
Preparing for the event actually takes
place a bit backward.
“Most of the time I’ll select the proteins
first, then develop the sides, sauces and
finally the garnish. Making the dish is
kind of a reverse process,” Ellenbecker
said. “The sauce often has the wine in it
and needs to be prepared and balanced
to make sure it’s going to have the flavors
I want. I’ll talk about the food, wine and
process at the dinner so guests can see
what I was shooting for and they can
decide for themselves if I hit the mark.”
When it comes to this event Ellenbecker
is looking forward to cooking and
eating some really good food and accompanying
it with wine made right there in
their vineyard.

WONDER BREAD YEARS
Comedian
comes to
Worthington
on March 22
!emory Lane is open.
The Memorial Auditorium
Performing Arts Center has a
program that will lead you back to the
age of the 1960s – also known as The
Wonder Bread Years.
The Wonder Bread Years: A Hilarious
Evening with “Seinfeld” Writer Pat
Hazell will be onstage at the Memorial
Auditorium Performing Arts Center in
Worthington, MN, at 7 p.m. Saturday,
March 22. Tickets are $35 in advance
and $40 at the door for adults. Students
and kids can get tickets for $15 in
advance and $20 at the door.
The show features the comedic genius
of Pat Hazell, who wrote for the hit sitcom
“Seinfeld.”
“Pat Hazell is one of the original writers
of NBC’s ‘Seinfeld,’ a ‘Tonight Show’
veteran, a critically-acclaimed playwright,
and contributing commentator
to National Public Radio. His 35-plus
years as a writer, director and producer
have made him the go-to guy for custom
theatrical entertainment,” according
to the show’s website.
Tammy Makram, the managing
director of the Memorial Auditorium
Performing Arts Center, says this show
is sure to take the audience back in time.
“There is a lot of reminiscing about
that time – the ’60s – during this show.
There are a lot of funny stories that are
going to be very relatable to the people
in the audience,” Makram said. “He
does a lot of storytelling and jokes and
there is some funny visuals in his slideshow
as well.”
There are things that are universal
about being a kid at almost any time,
and Hazell’s show hits on a lot of these
topics.
“He is satirical in a smart, funny way.
It’s fun because the things he talks about
are very relatable to people you might
know in your own life,” Makram said.
“He also does a lot of interaction with the
audience – comparing stories. They are
joy-filled shows.”
This clean comedy show is one that
the whole family would enjoy.
“There is no swearing and it is nonpartisan.
It’s a complete escape from all
of that and instead focuses on our areas
of commonality,” Makram said. F
