GARDENING

Spring Awakening:

Gardening tips for

March & April

As winter fades and the first signs of

spring appear, gardeners face an exciting

opportunity to renew their outdoor spaces.

March and April are critical months for

preparing your garden to thrive in the

warmer days ahead. With unpredictable

weather and a unique climate, a little

foresight goes a long way. Here are five

tips to help you create a vibrant, flourishing

garden this spring.

1. Prepare Your Soil:

Begin by assessing and

improving your garden’s

soil. Winter’s frosts and

fluctuating temperatures

can leave your soil

compacted and less

fertile. Remove any

debris and gently

turn the soil to aerate

it. Adding a layer of

well-rotted compost or

manure will enrich the

nutrient content and

improve drainage. This groundwork sets the stage

for healthy root development once you plant your

spring and summer selections.

2. Start Sowing Seeds:

March is ideal for

starting seeds indoors

for a head start on

summer vegetables

and annual blooms. Use

seed trays or pots with a

quality potting mix, and

cover them lightly to

protect tender seedlings

from any lingering frosts.

For cool-weather crops

like lettuce, spinach, and

peas, direct sowing

in April - once the risk of frost subsides - can be

very effective. Early planning ensures you have

a variety of plants ready to grow as the season

warms.

3. Prune and Clean:

Now is also the time to prune winter-dormant

trees and shrubs. Removing dead or damaged

branches encourages healthier growth and

prevents diseases. Additionally, clearing fallen

leaves and debris from your garden helps reduce

the risk of pests emerging and gives your garden

a tidy, refreshed look.

4. Plant Hardy Varieties:

Take advantage of the mild weather by planting

hardy perennials and spring bulbs such as

crocuses, daffodils, and tulips. These resilient

species can withstand a bit of chill and will

bring a burst of colour as they bloom later in the

season.

5. Support Biodiversity:

Finally, create a wildlife-friendly environment by

incorporating features like a birdbath or insect

hotel. Leaving some areas of your garden a bit

wild can encourage beneficial insects and native

birds to visit, enhancing the natural balance and

beauty of your outdoor space.

Embrace these gardening tips for March and

April, and you’ll be well on your way to a thriving,

sustainable garden all season long. With careful

planning and extra care this spring, every garden

can truly bloom with vibrant life, colour, and

promise.

School: Robotics

Success

On Wednesday 26th February

Amersham School Robotics Team

went to “Into the Deep” FIRST

Tech Challenge regional tournament

in Cambridge with their robot,

Precision.

One member had previously taken part

in similar competitions however this was

the first time competing in a robotics

competition for the rest of the team. We

had to design and build a robot then

code it to perform the tasks needed for

the competition. These included collecting

blocks and either hanging them from a bar

or putting them in a net to score points.

Also, lots of points were awarded if the

robot could hang from a bar.

We faced significant challenges with

the drivetrain, as it did not drive

straight despite following instructions.

We disassembled and rebuilt it five times

to achieve symmetry. Ultimately, loosening

the gearbox resolved the issue, enabling

straight driving.

We found that some parts were missing

and we had to be creative in the use of the

available material to replace them.

Coding was particularly challenging with

only two team members able to code,

missing sensors, a faulty SRS programmer,

and setbacks like code deletion. Despite

this, we successfully implemented basic

features including driving, arm control,

speed toggling for precision, arm presets,

and smooth arm movement underweight.

The competition was very exciting. Our

robot was inspected by the judges to

ensure it met the criteria. After giving a

presentation to the judges about our robot,

we spent the rest of the day competing

against all the other teams.

We managed to get into the finals of

the qualifiers and our team won the

Motivate Award! We felt we learnt a lot

of life skills, on top of the technical skills,

such as team work, time management,

presentation, problem solving,

perseverance and resilience. We had

a fantastic time and would greatly

recommend getting involved!

Nolan Register

On Thursday, 13 February, a week after

delivering an inspiring lecture to Years

Anthony Nolan charity returned to Dr

Challoner’s Grammar School to recruit

new donors. Their visit proved to be

record-breaking, as an incredible 129

Sixth Form students signed up to the

the charity has visited.

Anthony Nolan plays a crucial role in matching

stem cell donors with patients battling blood

cancer and blood disorders. Their register, one

of the most advanced in the world, includes

over 900,000 potential donors. Beyond this,

the charity funds vital research to improve the

success of transplants and enhance patient

outcomes.

The cause is especially meaningful to the

Challoner’s community. Archit Rakhade (Class

of 2023) survived leukemia twice thanks to a

stem cell donor found through Anthony Nolan.

Additionally, three former students who signed

up in previous years have since been matched

with recipients.

Mr. Colquhoun, Director of the Sixth Form,

Battling Blue

Monday Through

Charity Donations

from Amersham

School

Written by Rachel Walker,

House and School Council

Coordinator at Amersham School

At Amersham School, the house

system is at the heart of all that we

do. We have 6 houses (Beta, Delta,

Kappa, Omega, Sigma and Zeta)

who compete all year round to gain

house points that go towards the

prestigious Alpha Cup.

As the House and School Council

Coordinator, part of my role is to ensure that

all students develop a sense of belonging

through being part of a house, with the

opportunity to make a positive contribution

to school life.

In aid of Blue Monday, our aim has been to

change a typically difficult week for many into

something positive. On Wednesday 22nd

January, we held a mufti day and asked staff

and students to bring in a donation for the

food bank instead of their usual £1 contribution.

the competition so that we could pack the

items for them, and came to collect in their

collection / delivery van after the competition.

We also shared with our student body the

list of items that they were really in need of,

which mean that our donation was so well

received. When students entered the school

foyer, they were greeted by their Staff and

Sixth Form Heads of House, alongside our

usual upbeat entrance music to really build

the positivity we were trying to create!

Students were asked to put their donations

into their house box and then were able to

enter the school in mufti.

As this is a house competition, students

were able to donate as many items as they

wish! The items were counted up by the

Heads of House and the winning house was

the house to donate the most items. This is

the second year we have run this competition

and have subsequently built a relationship

with The Chiltern Foodbank. This year, they

delivered us their crates the week before

We have spoken to the students through

house assemblies about why we have chosen

Chiltern Foodbank and how their donations

can make such a difference to others. They

have been inspired by these stories, and

vowed to make a difference to others on

what can typically be a ‘blue’ week for many

across the county.

I am pleased to announce Kappa house

as our winners, raising 377 items. As a school,

we proudly donated 2,068 items for Chiltern

Foodbank, who were blown away by the

students’ generosity and kindness.

“I am enormously proud of the generosity

displayed by our wonderful students and

staff in their endeavour to support their

local community Food Bank. Our collective

values at Amersham School include being

kind, respectful and inclusive in addition

to contributing to our community in a

positive way. Our drive to make a significant

contribution to supporting families who

are facing challenging circumstances has

demonstrated these values. Whilst academic

learning is important, we believe that it

is even more important to be a positive

citizen, to be the best version of ourselves

that we can possibly be and to always do

the right and kind thing.” - Headteacher,

GXFR postponed

to May 2026

The GX Fun Run Committee has announced

that the bi-annual GX Fun Run event will be

postponed until Sunday 17th May 2026.

The decision follows the resignation of key

committee members and the recognition of

the need for professional event services to

manage an event of this size.

The Fun Run, which attracts 1,500 runners and

has supported local charities like; The Epilepsy

Society, Williams Fund and Hearing Dogs for

the Deaf has historically relied on dedicated

volunteers. However, with increasing logistical

demands, the committee decided that hiring a

specialist events company to handle the run side

of the day’s proceedings is essential to ensure

the event’s success.

Therese Cooklin commented, “We are

immensely grateful to our Gold sponsors

who committed to the 2025 event such as

longstanding businesses; BP Collins LLP and

Nunn Hayward, as well as new supporters like

Avery Healthcare, Savills, GX Physio, Gerrards

Cross Golf Club, Gayhurst School, Frost

Partnership, Kidd Rapinet LLP, David Moore

Photography, Doctor Now, KJ Smith Solicitors.

We hope that their support will transfer to the

new date in May 2026 in order to plan for the

event.

The committee also welcomes new treasurer

Mario Amato, who brings extensive experience

to the committee.

Therese added, “This extra time allows us to

plan an event that not only promotes health

and well-being but also embodies the spirit of

community support and togetherness.”

Life as a Town Councillor

Cllr Jaspal Chhokar

I moved with my family to Gerrards Cross in 2001. We have loved

living here, and I always wanted to give back to the community.

Around 2010, a friend suggested I consider

joining the parish council. My first exposure was

at the annual meeting in 2011, during which

there was a heated debate about a proposed

BMX track on the common.

Although the discussion was intense, it did

not deter me from putting my name forward

to be a councillor in May 2011. I owe a great

debt of gratitude to councillors such as Jennifer

Woolveridge, Ian Gordon, and Chris Brown, who

guided me during those early days when I knew

little about council workings and responsibilities.

Now on my third term, it is hard to believe I have

served for nearly 14 years. Gerrards Cross has

evolved significantly since I first joined, including

the transition from a parish council to a town

council and the introduction of a Mayor in place

of a Chair. Despite these changes, the town has

retained its unique community feel, as seen in our

summer and

Christmas events.

Throughout my Cllr Jaspal Chhokar

tenure, serving as

chair of the planning committee has allowed

me to learn about all aspects of Gerrards Cross.

I have met many residents and provided a voice

during planning discussions. One major battle

occurred during the 2016 local plan proposal,

which threatened to remove green belt land

fortunately, this did not happen.

I also enjoy monthly inspections of the East

Common play area, visiting with my two daughters

and gathering feedback from other parents. Since

July 2023, I have served as a Buckinghamshire

Councillor, which has strengthened our town council

efforts. Running my own business locally keeps

me accessible to residents, and I look forward to

continuing my service.

The Health Benefits

of Pets: A Doctor’s

Perspective

As a GP, I often emphasize the importance

of holistic health, which includes mental and

emotional well-being.

One of the most effective ways to enhance our health

is through the companionship of pets. Numerous

studies have shown that having pets can significantly

improve our physical and psychological health.

Firstly, pets encourage physical activity. Dog owners,

for instance, are more likely to engage in regular

walking, which can reduce the risk of obesity and

related conditions such as heart disease. A study

published in the *Journal of Physical Activity and

Health* found that pet owners are 54% more likely

to meet daily exercise recommendations.

Moreover, pets have a profound impact on mental

health. Interacting with animals can increase

serotonin and dopamine levels, promoting feelings

of happiness and reducing stress. Research in

Buckinghamshire Mind are excited to announce

The project, titled “Closing the Gap,” is designed

This innovative initiative will offer wrap-around support

tailored to individual needs, addressing the high

*Frontiers in Psychology* highlights that pet

ownership is linked to lower levels of depression and

anxiety. The simple act of petting a dog or cat can

trigger the release of oxytocin, fostering a bond that

enhances emotional well-being. Pets provide social

support too, reducing feelings of loneliness.

In conclusion, as a doctor I advocate for the

inclusion of pets in our lives. Their ability to

improve physical activity, mental health and social

connections makes them invaluable companions for

a healthier life.

EYE NEWS

A window to

your health: The

importance of

early eye testing

Your personal health is important. Today,

we focus on the early detection of health

issues rather than treating conditions after

they have advanced - a strategy that is

especially crucial in eyecare.

Eye tests are more than just vision checks.

Because the eyes contain some of the smallest

structures and blood vessels in the body, they

are often reliable indicators of your overall health.

With additional tests, such as OCT (during which

you only experience a brief flash of light), we can

detect and monitor potential issues up to five

years earlier than with a standard eye test. This

technology allows us to examine in detail the

layers of the light-sensitive retina and the blood

vessels that are not visible by other means. Eye

tests can also help detect high blood pressure,

elevated cholesterol, diabetes, glaucoma, and

cardiovascular disease.

Regular eye tests ensure that you are taking

the best possible care of your eyes and help

you maximise your vision. If you require vision

correction, there are many glasses and contact

lenses designed specifically for your needs. From

specialist driving lenses with contrast-enhancing

filters to Relax lenses that make viewing digital

devices gentler on your eyes, your optician can

advise you on the best solution. For anything

eye-related, ask your optician.

Safe & gentle ear wax

removal at a clinic

near you

Microsuctioning

At Hearwego Clinic we provide instant and effective ear wax removal treatment. Microsuction is the gold

standard method of ear wax removal.

Unlike traditional ear syringing or irrigation, which uses water, microsuction uses gentle suction to remove

ear wax. This is a safe, gentle and effective method of ear wax removal and, in the majority of cases, provides

instant relief and immediately restores full hearing. Our Audiologists are trained in all methods of ear wax

removal, microsuction, ear irrigation (commonly known as ear syringing) and instrumentation.

What to expect at your appointment

At Hearwego our practitioners will use a microscope to see a detailed view of your ear canal and examine

the potential build-up of ear wax. Ear wax and debris are removed using a gentle device. Our appointments

include an examination of your ears and removal of ear wax using microsuction, which typically lasts between

10-30 minutes. Depending on the consistency of the wax, we may need to revert to ear irrigation (commonly

known as ear syringing) or instrumentation. In rare cases, a follow-up visit may be required to remove

particularly stubborn ear wax.

Are you experiencing any of the following?

• Pressure in the ears

• Blocked feeling in the ears

• Need to pop your ears but can’t

• Sudden loss of hearing or muffles sound

• Hearing aids whistling

• Underperforming hearing aids
