It was 1978 when Marilyn Loden
first used the term ‘Glass Ceiling’ to
quote women’s aspirations. Many
must be unaware but this term still
stands tall in today’s digital era and is
of great importance.
The shattering of the glass ceiling
results in significant consequences,
but those consequences may take a
generation to get a full-fledged
acknowledgment. Complimenting this
acknowledgment are women in power
who reflect positivity. Having that
said, it’s evident that women in power
have the potential to influence other
women’s competitiveness and engagement in the longer run. However, it
impacts the crowd of younger women in a disproportionate manner.
Established women leaders’ aura largely influence the women who have the
experience of working at lower-levels before stirring high-end managerial
ranks and seasoned profiles. It makes obvious that shattered glass ceilings have
a greater impact on lower-profile women aspirants. As such, women who have
broken the glass ceilings should remember that their today’s achievement will
lay tomorrow’s foundation for a large pool of viable female candidates across
the globe. A foundation promoting key leadership positions in the coming
years.
Experts believe it’s not necessary that women who break the glass ceiling
extend an easy pathway for women aspirants or employees to walk through.
For instance, a woman who has overcome various forced barriers throughout
her professional journey will exercise the same coercive hurdles on her fellow
women professionals. To be precise, do women really shatter the glass ceiling
or just crack it? Do they really break the traditional shackles or just pull it?
The answer is a bit of contrast as some women forget the real sense of
leadership and become the agents of patriarchy while others rise from scratch
and become the talk of the town. One needs to redefine the mission to eradicate
this patriarchy and revisit these mindscapes so that emerging women
professionals don’t face the same barriers which were once challenged.
“Don’t build another glass ceiling made up of iron pillars for other women
who seek and follow similar paths as yours,” a note to the women who have
shattered the glass ceiling

Dr. Xiaokui Zhang
Transforming Patient Care with

9 The Tycoon Magazine
Gone are the days when medical institutions, clinical professionals, physicians, and scientists
were seeking human-driven chemicals to treat cancer. Today, they are unleashing the power of our
bodies upon this malignancy.
This excerpt exemplifies the endeavors of one such persona who is embracing the immune system’s
imperative properties and harnessing those to fight cancer. Meet Dr. Xiaokui Zhang, the Executive
Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of Celularity Inc.
Her educational journey has seen her completing B.Sc. in Physiology from Nanjing University and
a Ph.D. in Molecular Cell Biology from Rockefeller University. She has also attained post-doctoral
training in the Functional Genomics Department of Novartis Pharmaceuticals.
It was 2003 when her professional career took a flight to lead a discovery team at Helicon
Therapeutics alongside conducting target identification studies in cognitive disorders for three
years. Further, from 2006 to 2017, Xiaokui stirred various high-end profiles at Celgene Cellular
Therapeutics, including Director of Discovery Research and Senior Director of Research &
Development. The span was driven by the development of novel immunotherapy candidates
derived from placental progenitor cells and initiated clinical trials.
Altogether, from being a passionate scientist to a proud mother and wife, Xiaokui has kept no stone
unturned in exploring aspects from all walks of life.
ABOUT CELULARITY
Founded in 2017, Celularity Inc. is a next-gen
biotechnology company leading the evolution
in cellular medicine by delivering off-theshelf
allogeneic cellular therapies, at an
unparalleled scale, quality, and economics. A
spinout of Celgene Corporation, Celularity’s
innovative approach to cell therapy unlocks
the unique therapeutic potential within the

the treatment of Acute Myeloid Leukemia
(AML), Multiple Myeloma (MM),
Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), and
COVID-19.
Talking about the company Xiaokui says,
“We strive to ensure the scientific rigor in
daily research and development activities to
enhance our understanding of the
mechanisms and pathways that regulate the
immune system’s response to cancer”.
Under Xiaokui’s aegis, the company is
transforming the cellular medicine realm with
The company integrates deep-seated
Placental-derived T cells, Natural Killer (NK)
collaboration to accelerate product & clinical

development, translational research, and cell
efforts are satisfying the unmet clinical
manufacturing. It’s putting its best foot

Significant Bits of Motivation
As a teenager, Xiaokui was captivated by the
persistence and characteristic optimism of
Jane Goodall’s ‘In the Shadow of Man’. It’s
the exploration, discovery, and unraveling of
unknowns of the book that inspired her to
strive for the wellbeing of the living. It
prompted her to start an educational voyage
in the earlier mentioned fields and understand
the mechanisms underlying human body
function to the core. Her mom, who was one
of the few female leaders in universities, was
also particularly strong influence in her life.
“It was her support and her believe in me that
helped me be where I am at today,” Xiaokui
said.
Robert Hariri, MD, PhD, the Founder & CEO
of Celularity. His vision to develop placentaderived
cell therapies and biomaterial
products that transform cell therapy and
personalized medicine completely resonates
with Xiaokui’s thoughts.
She developed a passion for quality patient
care and the capabilities to align personal
aspirations with the company goals through
this league. Xiaokui is overwhelmed to be a
scientist in an organization driven by a
talented group of women who inspire her to
be the best version of herself.
Today, these motivational pieces help her in
discovering effective cell therapy for treating
debilitating diseases and improving patient

“My passion is to build and grow teams while continuing to develop
and advance therapies that improve patients’ lives. I will continue my
endeavors in cell therapy and immunotherapy, working

The Vortex of Challenges to Overcome
The current digital age has witnessed major
advancements across basic and medical
research that have resulted in the successful
application of immunotherapy for cancer.
Examining and understanding the science and
translating that potential into the clinic has
been the centre of all. Besides, innovations in
science and bioengineering are being rapidly
integrated to build robust technology
platforms thereby, improving the lives of
patients.
In 2013, Science magazine deemed cancer
immunotherapy as the ‘Breakthrough of the
Year’. In 2017, Chimeric Antigen Receptor
(CAR)-engineered T cells were approved by
“Build networks and mentorships to ensure that you are
supported and empowered, identify skills that should be
developed or improved upon, take the initiatives to increase
your visibility, then drive your career development with full
confidence and determination”
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to
enter the practice of medicine for the
treatment of Leukemia and Lymphoma.
Despite these advancements, Xiaokui sensed
some major challenges whirling amid the
field of cancer immunotherapy:
• Establishing an effective end-to-end
supply chain for cell therapy
• Key biomarkers to predict treatment
efficacy and patient response
• On-demand availability of effective
therapy
• Making treatments competitive
Acknowledging this scenario, she
channelized all her thinking capabilities to
generate a readily available, safe, and
efficacious therapy framework, at Celularity.
Currently, Xiaokui along with her innovationdriven
pool of professional scientists and

Bioengineers are consistently engineering
effective patient-centric solutions.
With such vitality at the helm, they have
successfully managed to overcome the
mentioned challenges with their exhaustive
R&D and are delivering transformational
changes for more than three years now.
Keeping a futuristic approach at the forefront
Xiaokui says, “My passion is to build and
grow teams while continuing to develop and
advance therapies that improve patients’
lives. I will continue my endeavors in cell
therapy and immunotherapy, working
collaboratively with others to deliver truly
innovative and life-changing therapies for
patients.”
Xiaokui’s Take on Making a
‘Difference as a Woman’
More women in leadership roles is correlated
with stronger financial returns and better
business outcomes in the corporate world,
says independent research. However, women
are still underrepresented in executive,
decision-making roles and are judged unfairly
as a leader who can make a difference. Their
confidence is undermined by gender
stereotypes, by which, efforts to constantly
prove their leadership capabilities never go
out of sight.
To outcast such situations, Xiaokui says,
“Women should maintain self-confidence,
talk openly about their accomplishments to
get noticed and go after what they want
fearlessly. Also, having talent development
programs, coaching, and mentoring
programs can make sure that women are
effectively empowered in various roles.”
She believes that a successful woman has the
potential to take on more responsibilities and
accepts the challenge of attaining equilibrium
across personal and professional life. These
conditions can be better managed by
establishing a strategic and realistic career
and personal goals followed by
communicating with those who can help
achieve these goals.
Xiaokui also believes that glass ceilings are
real barriers women should be aware of and
then break in the mind. This act provides
strength and assurance to work out strategic
plans. Concretely, a woman needs to stay
focused, manage priority and conflict, and
allow flexibility in scheduling to create a
prominent niche and gain a competitive edge.
A Note to Remember
“It is crucial to understand what you want
to do, where you want to reach and to define
the goals for your career. While you focus
on those goals and follow the path forward,
remember you are not alone and that you
don’t have to fight your battles on your
own,” states Xiaokui.
“Build networks and mentorships to ensure
that you are supported and empowered,
identify skills that should be developed or
improved upon, take the initiatives to
increase your visibility, then drive your
career development with full confidence and
determination,” she states further.
Mentorship in R&D within an academic
setting proves effective for a mentee’s
development of skills, capabilities, and a
career path. As such, it’s necessary to
proactively build mentor-mentee networks to
unlock countless career opportunities in the
longer run.

Meet Dr. Maria Ryan, PhD,
APRN, The President and CEO
of Cottage Hospital. Dr. Ryan is
known for her high-integrity,
energetic leadership, and the
ability to envision and create
successful outcomes in complex
situations. Dr. Ryan has diverse
healthcare and functional
expertise, with a tenacious
commitment to driving results
and motivating staff to peak
performance. She achieved a
doctorate in healthcare
administration and holds a
master’s degree in the science of
nursing. Dr. Ryan is board
certified as a Family Nurse
Practitioner with a specialty in
Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Ryan has a distinguished
career in for-profit, non-profit,
tertiary care and, most recently, a
critical access hospital. She has
been the driving force behind
Cottage Hospital’s many
accomplishments such as being
honored by the Norris Cotton
Cancer Center at Dartmouth-
Hitchcock Medical Center for
taking a leadership role in a
collaborative outreach program
centered on cancer prevention
and early detection. Cottage
Hospital has received national
awards such as a 2013
HealthStrong Award for
Excellence in Efficiency, a 2014
HealthStrong Top 100 Critical
Access Hospital by iVantage
Health Analytics, and a Top 20
Best Practices in Quality
designation by the National Rural
Health Association. With Dr.
Ryan’s leadership, Cottage
Hospital was also the only
hospital in New Hampshire, and
one of eight in the country, to
successfully attest to Meaningful
Use Stage 2 in the first qualifying
period. Additionally, Cottage
Hospital was the recipient of the
2015 Business of the Year Award
given by the Cohase Chamber of
Commerce.
Dr. Ryan has been recognized on
a national level as well. She was
selected in Becker’s Hospital
Review’s list of “Top Rural
Hospital CEOs to Know” in the
United States for seven years in a
row. Amongst all hospitals,
regardless of size, Dr. Ryan was
identified again by Becker’s
Hospital Review as one of “300
Hospital and Health System
Leaders to Know.” She was
selected as one of NH Business
Review’s Outstanding Women
in Business 2017. Maria
received the Louis Gorin Lifetime
Achievement Award for
Excellence in Rural Health by the
National Rural Health
Association in 2019. Most
recently, she was listed on NH
Business Review’s “NH 200-The
Granite State’s Most Influential
Business Leaders” for
Healthcare in 2020.
Her secrets to success are simple:
be transparent and passionate,
have enthusiasm and insight,
listen well and be visible.
Into the Shoes of Dr. Maria
Ryan
Dr. Ryan started her career as a
nurse’s aide in a nursing home
when she was just 16 years of
age. She married after high
school, and was a Mother of three
children by the age of 21. Despite
her husband working two jobs
and working as a nurse’s aide
herself, they struggled to pay
rent, and often did not have
enough food to feed their family.
In order to get out of poverty, the
couple began to discuss the idea
of one of them going to college.
The couple came to a mutual
agreement that Maria would go to
nursing school, as she had always
excelled in math and science.
After her first degree, she went on
to continue her education and
received a Bachelor’s degree in
the Science of Nursing, followed
by a Master’s degree in the
Science of Nursing and Board
Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.
This enabled her to be a provider;
in New Hampshire a Board-
Certified Nurse Practitioner does
not need a Physician Supervisor.
Finally, Maria pursued and
received a Doctorate of
Philosophy in Health
Administration.
During her journey, Dr. Ryan
worked her way up, starting off as
a staff nurse, then a charge nurse,
followed by a Director over
multiple units, next she worked in
Leadership but also worked as an
Emergency Department Provider,
a Chief Nursing Officer and Chief
Operating Officer, until reaching
her current role as a Chief
Executive Officer. Her career has
been in for-profit and non-profit
organizations, as well as in
Community and Tertiary care
hospitals.

states. She researched, developed,
and implemented a specialized
unit for older adults. This unit is
named the Ray of Hope after long
time executive counselor Ray
Burton. This unit takes referrals
from New Hampshire, Vermont,
Massachusetts and Maine.
Dr. Ryan helped to solve a dire
issue in her rural community by
erecting the Rowe Health Center
in 2015, and as a result,
strengthening the primary care
network in her service area. The
Rowe Health Center is named
after Dr. Harry Rowe who was an
inspiration to all. Dr. Rowe
served Cottage Hospital and the
community for many years. He
was one of the first providers to
greet Dr. Ryan when she moved
to Lisbon, NH. Dr. Rowe
sponsored Dr. Ryan in joining the
Wells River, VT and Woodsville,
NH Rotary. They became fast
friends. Today the Rowe Health
Center is home to Internal
medicine, Cardiology,
Endocrinology, Gastroenterology,
Mental Health, and Podiatry
Services. Cottage Hospitals
Physical Therapy department is a
source of great pride. The PT
department receives referrals
from Providers near and far due
to their expertise and positive
clinical outcomes.
The hospital also takes referrals
from other hospitals for
emergency surgery as well as
intensive care.
Dr. Ryan is a fierce defender of
patient rights, and she eliminates
all barriers for those who are
seeking healthcare. She is one of
the few CEO’s who works
tirelessly to keep prices at a
reasonable rate.
Source of motivation and
future goals
Dr. Ryan describes herself as
mission driven as an individual
and as a leader. She is motivated
to work harder and smarter
especially when she is protecting
those who are vulnerable. This
publication is confident we will
see Dr. Ryan as a positive role
model and in the future we will
see her advocating for and lifting
up the vulnerable and oppressed.
Current industry scenario
strategies to contribute
effectively in hyper
competitive market
Sharing her perspective on
current scenario of the market Dr.
Maria said : Leading a hospital is
complex and has a lot of
variables. Reimbursement
continues to decline as employee
wages continue to increase. The
investment in technology is vast,
and it is imperative to
continuously implement cutting
edge cybersecurity. The
healthcare workforce has been a
struggle and will continue to be a
struggle. Cottage Hospital invests
in local high school graduates to
start at entry level hospital jobs,
as well as in college scholarships
to pursue medical lab technicians,
Licensed Nurses Aides, Nursing
and Physical Therapy roles.
Cottage Hospital assists current
employees who would like to
advance their degrees, and has
also assisted registration persons
and other roles obtain a registered
nurse degree.
Dr. Ryan doesn’t consider herself
to be in a competitive market at
this time. Her previous hospital
was a 400-bed tertiary care
hospital in a very competitive
market in Pennsylvania. She
would consistently look for winwin
situations for the patient and
the hospital, and sometimes the
insurance company. If great
quality care is given and the
patient gets out of the hospital in
a timely manner, everyone wins
Her Take on Challenges
Faced by women in
corporate world and piece of
advice to emerging
professionals.
Dr. Ryan would tell any
individual to always remain
engaged, no matter the
circumstance. Seek to understand
those around you, don’t be afraid
to take risks and strive to always
be visible.
She advises to not fear taking a
critical look at your strengths and
weaknesses. Steadily and
persistently polish and expand the
natural talents that you have. You
can work to improve some
weaknesses, but don’t focus too
much on them, instead surround
yourself with a team who will
complement you, and you them.
For instance, Dr. Ryan is a
visionary and a strategist. She
requires people who are very
detailed oriented, so that is what
she pursues. A highly functional
senior level team will fill in each
other’s gaps!
Dr. Ryan believes that it is
imperative to mentor others.
Opportunities must be given to
those who work hard and have
talent. She believes that it is
priceless for aspiring women
entrepreneurs to see and be
mentored by a strong, successful
woman, to inspire them and show
them that anything is possible,
regardless of gender!

Modern education is witnessing a paradigm shift to a digital transformation where the right blend
of cognitive technologies, scientific advancements, and creative minds is taking over. Today, Tycoon Media
(TM) introduces you to one such persona, Nataliia Rzhevska, who kept no stone unturned in embracing
the mentioned with open hands.
Let’s take a deeper dive into this exclusive interview which drools over her vision to make a difference.
Team TM: Brief us about the current industry scenario from your perspective.
Nataliia: Everyone has already confronted the problem of adapting to the conditions of uncertainty and
chaotic state. The stressful transition into the remote mode of teaching and learning became a bifurcation
point for many national educational systems. From this uncertainty, the systems have taken it to the next
level, with ‘Flexibility’ being the main feature they acquired.
And we’re talking here not only about adapting to non-standard conditions, conditions in which different
standards apply to ensure the performance of your professional functions, but also getting ready for the
elasticity of skills, transforming them for the educational welfare of the world.
Never before have educational systems been so revitalized by academic volunteering, international
interaction, and support. Live-streaming of millions of seminars, forums, and conferences acted as the
circulatory system that renewed everyone’s life in the educational system.
Team TM: Guide us through your profession and source of motivation.
Nataliia: Leveraging a profession without enough creativity is an ambush. My ikigai lies in my position as
a CIO at VideoWiki, driven by nothing but enthusiasm, inspiration, and passion. I have accomplished my
Ph.D. in Pedagogical Sciences with a sheer determination which gives me the potential, today, to stand tall
as a University Lecturer.
The present-day education system has breathtaking ups and downs that break people into pieces. Dark and

It’s our collective efforts that I became a Neuropedagogy & AI expert working on the subjects of cognitive
future for students while supporting teachers at the university level.
Team TM: What’s your definition of Education and Teaching?
Nataliia: The world is observing the fast aging of information which has no time to turn into knowledge
with a rapid switch to a new industrial revolution. It’s not even about theoretical knowledge matching
practical skill, but their anticipation in the conditions of the transient valence of trans-sciences and subindustries.
People create technologies that create impact. This impact determines ecosystem processes. And at the next
level of their development, it’s technologies that generate new technologies and design innovations. While
the traditional education system presents some loopholes in the growth, modern education exemplifies the
mix of academic and practical skills that prove beneficial in the longer run.
My notion of teaching is to motivate the very sense of acquiring knowledge and gaining the ability to
appreciate the aftertaste of its practical application. For me, education is igniting a passion for innovative
thinking.
Team TM: What are the frequent challenges faced by women in the corporate world and what are the
ways to tackle them?
Nataliia: Both men and women face the same genre of challenges and the response to overcome them is
gender-specific. However, the distinctiveness of a woman lies in her capability to simultaneously perform
multiple tasks and juggle various professional & social roles.
Practical thinking capabilities can help to avoid professional burnout across the corporate world. For a
woman to stand out, she has to bring the best innovative strategies to the table and identify relevant market
solutions. Going beyond the information toxicity generated by all the gadgets and social media will help in
gaining a competitive edge. At last, guard and respect thoughts, cultivate optimism!
Team TM: What are your past experiences, achievements, or lessons that have shaped your journey?
Nataliia: Human behavior is volatile to tough decision-making and conditions sourcing emotional
breakdown. We run around a corporate maze, change directions, look for ways out, get tired, rest, move on
colliding with colleagues at times, reach a deadlock, and start over again.
And that’s fine for as long as you can still breathe creativity at such a level of complexity. Being innovative
and passionate about the profession is the need of the hour but having the ability to stay cool and calm also
equally counts to outshine corporate convolutions.
Team TM: What are your strategies to contribute effectively to the hyper-competitive market?
Nataliia: I have four strategies to talk about.
Trend Anticipation – The analysis of trans-sciences and sub-industries to shape the framework of future
skills.
Using the Internet of Behaviors (IoB) – A way to deeply analyze user behavioral strategies.
People Management – Simple acts of care and support create endless concentric circles of kindness.
Ecology of Thought – Good intentions. Open science. Open innovation. Co-leadership. Co-creation.
MR. Shivam Dhawan
Co-founder Videowiki
Team TM: How do you see
yourself in the near future?
Tell us about your future
goals.
Nataliia: I’ll make every
possible effort for educational
welfare. I’ll keep moving with
the same inspiration to accept
change and inspire people to
convert every challenge into an
opportunity. I want my
strategies, their implementation,
and the resulting profitable
outcomes to be accessible to
those in need because innovation
only makes sense after reaching
the end-user.

Cisco – defining a one-of-a-kind
legacy
Headquartered in San Jose, CA,
Cisco has been helping customers
to successfully connect, secure,
and automate for more than 35
years now. With a global presence
of 77,000 people across 100
countries, the company is
effectively connecting people
through cutting-edge networking
hardware, software, and
telecommunications equipment
for a cloud-first world.
With its enterprise-grade
collaboration tools and industrydefining
networking and compute
technology, Cisco continues to
make a lasting impact around the
world. With a combination of
trust, innovation, and choice —
backed by an intuitive culture,
mission, and people — Cisco
leads in technology and corporate
social responsibility.
Transparency, authenticity, and
empathy are the cornerstones that
help the company in serving 98
percent of Fortune 500
companies.
Choice is a strategic imperative at
Cisco. The company has
positively impacted 527 million
people through its social impact
grants and signature programs
like Network Academy and is on
course to reach its goal of 1
billion people by 2025. Under
Puja’s guidance, the company is
concentrating on overcoming the
current pandemic while helping
people rise to an ever-better “next
normal.”
“I am excited to help shape
Cisco’s transformation and our
leaders’ transformation,” Puja
said. “One of the goals I am most
passionate about is to lead the
tech industry in hiring and
retaining diverse talent and
creating a culture of inclusion and
belonging.”
Larger than Life Experiences
From a girl who considered
changing schools after her first
year at the University of
Cincinnati (UC) to defining
transformation capabilities at
Cisco, Puja has come a long way.
Here are a few qualities that
helped make her a personal
success and a change agent for
others.
Made lemonade from lemons –
Puja overcame her doubts about
UC by stretching into campus
leadership roles. Her experiences
as a student senator for the
college of engineering, Co-op/
internship ambassador between
UC and GE Aviation, and student
body vice president and president
honed her leadership capabilities.
And these experiences unlocked
doors P&G as an undergraduate
and led her towards brand
management.

Developed a multi-faceted personality – Transitioning from an engineering student to a career in marketing at
P&G was not easy. But as she focused on learning marketing, she also discovered her passion for the people
function and soon shifted towards human resources.
Confidence is key – Puja chose an MBA over her job as a marketer when her father wanted her to get married.
Her colleague thought that she would have a hard time getting into a top MBA program until she got admission
into Harvard Business School.
Followed her convictions – Everyone said Harvard MBAs don’t go into human resources. But Puja became an
intern at Deloitte in their human capital consulting practice. From there, she joined the Corporate Executive
Board as an HR research consultant.
Never has regrets – Leaving Google to join Visa was a tough decision, but she never looked back. In the end,
she acknowledged that her core purpose is to continue growing and helping others.
Advice for life
Puja is thankful for the ongoing support of her husband Nimesh. “Pick your life partner wisely,” she advises,
“as it will determine your accomplishments in life.”
But Puja believes that “you are the creator of your destiny.” Asking for help and advice from mentors will help,
but it’s your own commitment that moves mountains. She advises the young to be ambitious and embrace the
power of the community as a whole.
In the end, she believes that following your instincts and giving back to society will lead to the best kind of
success.
Between

there’s
a bridge.
At Cisco, we aim to build a world where
everyone gets equal access. That means
taking every challenge and facing it head
on. We're committed to empowering the
people we serve and leaving the world
better than we found it. From social
justice to global sustainability, we stand
to create new opportunities for
tomorrow. Our purpose is to power an

Filling the Gender Gap to
Overcome the Current
Pandemic
An Approach to Economic
Recovery
“Gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It
is a precondition for meeting the challenge of
reducing poverty, promoting sustainable
development, and building good governance.”
– Kofi Annan, Seventh Secretary-General of the
United Nations
The onset of COVID-19 has disrupted the global
economic outcomes like never before. Many
businesses had to lay off their employees and even
close doors permanently to survive and wait for
normality. However, there’s another pandemic that
has not been in talks but has the potential to
transform the overall business scenario and generate
tactile returns. It’s none other than ‘Gender Gap’.
The only difference between these two pandemics is
that COVID-19 can now be treated with a vaccine but
the gender gap has nothing of this sort for its
eradication. This gender gap in the workplace is of
utmost significance in the United States, but it’s an
issue that has become one of the prime concerns
across the globe. “Closing the gender gap has the
potential to add $28 trillion to the global GDP,” says
the Council for Foreign Relations.
You must be thinking how will closing the gender
gap look like? The answer is simple – it is a platform
that provides women equal opportunities to earn
equal pay as men for handling the same profiles and
getting employed at the same levels. The steps taken
to close the gender gap can successfully contribute to
economic recovery, something that the whole world
is facing as we continue walking through the current
pandemic situation.
What Exactly is ‘Gender Inequality’?
It can be defined as any setting which allows varying
opportunities to individuals based on an array of
differences – here, gender. To be precise, gender
inequality is a community disturbance that negatively
impacts both males and females nearby as well as
around the world.
It has become a serious problem to bring forth and
discuss because it’s severely affecting the global
economy. The women are unable to achieve their
goals and reach their potential, both financially and
professionally. However, it could be said that the way
to close this gender gap is nothing less than a
challenge.
Defining Speed Breakers on the Way
The first and foremost step to figuring out how to
close the gender gap is by identifying what’s standing
in the way and cut it from the roots. Besides, personal
choices also make a great difference – women choose
to stay home to look after their children or family.
30 The Tycoon Magazine
They lose maximum leadership opportunities and
stay behind in the crowd.
But some other issues also play a key role here. For
instance, many countries have less-to-no laws for the
protection of women against sexual harassment at the
workplace. It’s obvious that the workplace which
overlooks abuse will have less-to-no women count.
They would avoid stirring such a toxic workplace or
a job profile.
In addition to this is illiteracy. The number of
illiterate women is higher than men which decreases
job opportunities. Some countries also highlight
issues like biased access to education and no bank
account. The cultural beliefs are not behind
prohibiting women not to work outside the home.
Few more considerations may include acceptance of
domestic violence and control.
Moreover, simple worldly statistics showcase that
women globally tend to hold low-paying hourly jobs
as compared to men. Even in similar job profiles,
they aren’t making as much as men.
Closing the Gender Gap
Having a list of speed breakers to jump over helps in
acknowledging what all is to be done to achieve
gender parity. Dismantling them one at a time will
help women and men to take the necessary steps to
close the gap.
Offering women equal and better access to education
both offline and online has become the need of the
hour. Such accessibility to remote educational
opportunities will prove beneficial from getting
certified as a digital marketer to becoming a makeup
artist.
Yes, the qualification will surely be accomplished at
the learner’s level of understanding but the training
increases the chances of getting a job in the first
place. There are even chances of getting a high
paying job.
Let’s take a closer look at finding some solutions to
close the gender gap.
Providing women with digital payment
options and opportunities to gain the privilege of
having a bank account even in remote areas of the
world is an effective way to close the gap
probabilities of boosting the economy with their
income
Increasing legal reforms and high-end
protection in the work environment is another way to
empower and help women professionals in reaching
the epitome of success
Many countries still witness situations where
women need their husband’s permission to work and
don’t have any kind of laws to get protection against
harassment at the workplace
Improving legal protection helps in offering
women with safe, secure, and confident environment
to hone their skills and reach their true potential
Many women are still performing the
majority of work that is unpaid like raising their
children, looking after their family, or any other
household chores
They already have a lot on their plates which
makes them exhausted to focus on their corporate
profile resulting in fewer-to-no opportunities, very
low paying, and part-time jobs
One of the significant ways to be taken into
consideration in order to close the gender gap is to
find a balance between unpaid work and a
professional career
The Bottom Line
Closing the gender gap – it’s now or never. With
many organizations reshaping and welcoming
creativity amidst the current COVID-19 crisis, it
truly makes sense to promote changes that are
necessary to cast out gender parity in the longer run.
Women and men both are equally responsible for
transforming the business world and contributing to
gender equality. And if both play their part well, the
world will close the gender gap in no time and boost
economic outcomes like never before.
This is one of the best ways to assist single
women – without or with family or children, to
manage financial framework, enhancing the

economic policy in 90’s, we
became the part of Global village
and Entrepreneurial supply chain,
our agri and industrial Self
Reliance status had been
threatened as we allowed other
countries to sell their products in
India.
With a firm belief from my own
experiences that economic
empowerment is a powerful tool
to be used as a starting point for
overall empowerment of the
women, the first experiment of
this strategy was initiated in 80s
by me when most women
development activities were
welfare oriented, in which
women were considered
“acceptor” and not an active
participant.
I initiated the first programme,
termed as Entrepreneurship
Development programme for
women in Gujarat, wherein they
were supported to begin nontraditional
businesses. This
clearly demonstrated the
sustainability of the development
approach at women’s economic
empowerment.
In 1986, I transformed my
entrepreneurial experience into a
developmental initiative and
started “The International Centre
for Entrepreneurship and Career
Development (ICECD)”. ICECD
facilitated thousands of women to
become entrepreneurs. These
women were taught essentially
two things: (i) How to take
charge of their lives with dignity
and confidence, and (ii) How to
initiate and manage their micro
small enterprises, and their selfesteem
and confidence
blossomed.
ICECD expanded the activities all
over India and established itself
as a premier organization in the
country for Women’s Economic
Empowerment and developed
thousands of women in Gujarat
itself and pan India.
My commitment became
instrumental in initiating and
institutionalizing Women
Economic Empowerment strategy
in countries of Asia, Africa,
Pacific and the Caribbean. By
now, the Women Economic
Empowerment strategy has been
taken to over 60 countries.
Opportunities, Issues and
Challenges for Women in SME
Micro, Small and Medium
Enterprises constitutes the
backbone of our economy in
maintaining an appreciable
growth rate and in generating
employment opportunities. This
sector has been regarded as the
engine of economic growth and
social development in India and
world over.
In 21st century, women in Micro,
small and medium enterprises
(MSMEs) in India and abroad
have demonstrated noteworthy
contribution. Gujarat today
represents the very best of India,
in terms of the quality of
infrastructure, global outlook of
its business community, investor
friendly policies, and speed of
decision making in government.
It is widely reckoned as the
growth engine of India.
While the investment climate is
clearly important for large,
formal sector firms, it is just as
important for Small and Medium
Enterprises (SMEs), the informal
sector, agricultural productivity
and for poverty reduction. We are
making great strides in these
spheres and interestingly women
are slowly becoming important
players.
It is indeed a great time to be
here. A time to dream great
dreams. There is a tremendous
upsurge of economic activity.
Western and Southern states
resurgent economy is undergoing
a rapid transformation, as if the
energies of the states are bent by
a common urge to be
economically strong and to
eradicate the evils of poverty and
misery of the masses.
Women contribution in MSME
sector is extremely crucial in
addressing the national objectives
of bridging the rural-urban
divide, reducing poverty and
generating employment to the
teeming millions and making
Swanirbhar Bharat. However,
women in this sector experience
several constraints and challenges
which remain to be addressed.
These include: i) Equity as a
source of financing is
underutilized and the prevalence
of investment by venture capital
and angel investors is low, ii)
Women Entrepreneurs face the
problem of delayed payments
from their buyers which
41 The Tycoon Magazine
42 The Tycoon Magazine
adversely impacts their working
capital as well as their next cycle
of production, iii) Women lack
adequate information about
various schemes and benefits
available from the government,
iv) Financial institutions/ Banks
face challenges in credit risk
assessment of MSMEs as such
and more from women
entrepreneurs, and v) Interest for
the utilization of the available
credit guarantee and insurance
schemes by banks has been low
amongst women.
Today existing women enterprise
are at different level, which are
traditional small company,
planning for growth, take-off
from existing conditions.
The major challenges confronted
by these women enterprises
include; lack of adequate credit
and capital, poor and inadequate
infrastructural facilities,
inadequate access and marketing
linkages, technological
obsolescence and inadequate
application of new technology,
lack of skilled human resources,
dilatory and cumbersome
regulatory practices for clearance
and poor adaptability to emerging
international trends. This calls for
the need for strategic intervention
to improve coordination and
linkages between various stakeholders
including the
Government, industries and other
agencies/ associations working in
this field.
“My vision continues to be THE
ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
OF WOMEN, but the final
mission is the achievement of
FULL EQUALITY and TOTAL
ALL ROUND DEVELOPMENT
of WOMEN. My efforts will
culminate only when women
from all strata of the society,
particularly the disadvantaged
and the poor, will achieve a sense
of overall empowerment through
meaningful participation and
decision making at family,
community and policy levels.
In future, I see myself having
reached out to every woman of
India, realizing my dream of
seeing these women as
independent decision makers,
entrepreneurs and socially and
economically empowered in the
true sense.”

Connecting the World through
Fragrance
44 The Tycoon Magazine
The cologne, fragrance, and
perfumes market is concretely
influenced by ever-changing
customer demands and
consummate leadership traits.
The key market players are
consistently rolling out novel
and non-irritant fragrances to
satisfy these imperatives. This
excerpt sheds light on one such
key fragrance player Hiro
Nakayama, a name
synonymous with energy and
enthusiasm.
It was 2000, right after her
graduation when she entered
the corporate world. Hiro has
also completed her MA in
Communication followed by
her professional pathway
which made a trail across
various cities including Los
Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, and
Singapore. In 2008, she
experienced a weakened sense
of smell due to excessive stress
and started her scent journey.
Acknowledging that fragrance
eases lives, Hiro launched
Project Felicia in 2013
intending to explore the true
potential of scents. Later, in
2016-17 she was also in charge
of proposing fragrance
concepts for product
development at Givaudan
Singapore. Today, being a
seasoned entrepreneur keeping
a stronghold in American,
Japanese, Singapore, and
Malaysia niche perfume
promotion, she is now focusing
on incense creation for
business expansion.
It’s All in the Fragrance
Headquartered in New York,
Project Felicia is leveraging
fragrances to offer exclusive
marketing, educational events,
and product development.
Recognizing the importance of
incense after her mother’s
passing in Japan at the
Buddhism ritual, she is now
strongly focusing on incense.
She has offered Creative
Japanese Incense workshops in
Singapore, Tokyo, NY, and
LA, and also spoke about the
art of incense recently at the
Pitti Fragranze 2020 expo.
While the current pandemic
situation has significantly
increased the demand for
fragrance the New York Times
featured incense as an
alternative to aroma diffusers
and candles.
Seeing such exponential
opportunity for scent, Hiro is
all set to transform the face of
the fragrance industry with
Project Felicia. She is trying to
establish a niche optimized
enough to withstand the
complexities of the market.
What does True Success
Mean?
The fragrance industry has
been broken into different
categories like perfume,
essential oils, scent marketing,
incense, ingredients, etc. But
now it has started to integrate
its imperatives. Hiro
understood the confidentiality
of this industry at her nascent
career stage. She also
recognized the incense
category’s super confidentiality
during her expansion in the
same. The expansion was
nothing less than a challenge
but her belief in success comes
to those who strive was
unshakable.
She was of the opinion that the
industry should go beyond the
conventional practices and
resonate with novel approaches
to promote next-gen fragrance
products and services. Talking
about the same she says, “In
order to go beyond
conventional thoughts, we are
expected to be more cautious
than any other categories I've
been involved with - respect,
humility, patience.”
Hiro is well known about
women-specific challenges and
has been a part of a generation
driven by many female leaders
and mentors who faced stigma
and discrimination. However,
she created a lasting impact in
this masculine world with her
determination and commitment
to make a difference.
Expressing her side, she states,
“As building my career, I have
been fortunate enough to be
surrounded by women who
showed me this new path that I
can achieve anything as long
as I am competent, confident,
authentic, and passionate
about what I do, regardless of
gender and age.”
Hiro deeply observed that
women have been struggling
for survival in the corporate
world and the challenges they
face stop them from being
45 The Tycoon Magazine
46 The Tycoon Magazine
successful in whatever they do. Moreover, women are timid to flaunt their achievements and forget to
self-promote in order to outshine the professional setting. For her, success was all about realizing own
capabilities and contributions as accomplishments. She believed that offering and establishing a support
system is the ultimate solution to empower women.
Talking about her success mantra Hiro says, “Believe in yourself and the rest follows. And I believe that
mentorship is the first step to the support system that is crucial for any success.”
What will the Future Behold?
Under Hiro’s leadership, Project Felicia is planning to launch an all-inclusive collection of incense
inspired by Japanese history in SS2021 targeting consumers outside Japan. This collection will have the
potential to disrupt the incense industry in Japan like never before. Hiro is creating a robust framework to
challenge upcoming fragrance projects intending to push the industry towards better value for money
outcomes.
With a mission to ‘Bridge and Blend - A Scent World that Creates A Better Society’, she wants to
contribute to forming a strong society based on the foundation of fragrance and pleasant scents. For many
achieving this formation would seem to be impossible. But with Project Felicia at the forefront, Hiro
plans to offer KOIKU (scent education) via state-of-the-art marketing, educational events, and product
development.
With dedication at heart and expertise in mind, she is all set to build an ecosystem backed by the aroma.
She will surely integrate aroma into people’s lives across the globe by actively using ‘olfactory’ and
display a marvel of fragrance to its best.

Joanne Archambault
Committed to Making Justice
Accessible to All
48 The Tycoon Magazine
The world has witnessed
encouraging progress across
different areas, but violence
against women is still a
challenge of massive potential
to overcome. However, there
are a few humans who are
going out of their way and
playing their part to make all
spheres of society safe and
secure for women.
One such human consistently
endeavoring to end gender
inequality and secure equal
rights for women is Joanne
Archambault. A woman who
is keeping no stone unturned in
establishing
a progressive approach to end
violence against women. A
woman who believes in doing
what is right rather than
striving to achieve what is
popular.
Joanne’s professional journey
includes serving the San Diego
Police Department for more
than two decades. Out of
which her last 10 years were
dedicated to supervising a Sex
Crime Unit of 13 detectives.
Dealing with crime victims and
investigations related to sexual
assaults, she recognized a dire
need for sexual assault
investigation training.
As such, in 2003 with an aim
to improve the investigation
and prosecution of sexual
assault, Joanne founded End
Violence Against Women
International (EVAWI). Since
then, she stands tall as a
Founder who makes every
effort to make sure that all
sexual assault reports are
investigated fairly and all
victims attain the needed
support and assistance they
need every time.
Exemplifying Exclusivity at
Every Step
Headquartered in Colville, WA
(Stevens County), EVAWI is
successfully offering training
and technical assistance to
veteran professionals and those
just beginning to work in the
field. By receiving $9.5 million
of public and private funding
from donors, federal grants,
and an annual international
conference, in 2019 alone, the
organization provided 159,972
hours of training and support
for law enforcement, health
care, victim services, and other
professionals.
Driven by Joanne’s stringent
efforts, this non-profit
organization impacted more
survivors of gender-based
violence than ever before in
2019. Its ‘OnLine Training
Institute (OLTI)’ catered to
more than 5,000 new users and
completed almost 11,000
modules with utmost
excellence.
Working as a Child Abuse
Detective, Joanne
acknowledged that people are
often unable to give an
effective response to a
disclosure of sexual assault
victimization. With EVAWI at
the helm, she curated a ‘Start
By Believing’ campaign to
create a positive community
response, informing the public,
uniting allies and supporters,
and improving individual
reactions.
Living by ‘We hear you, and
we are here to help,’ the
campaign is transforming
societal responses to sexual
violence and improving
outcomes for victims, one
response at a time. 8 states
have now proclaimed to be
Start By Believing States and
577 communities the US and
in 23 other countries have
launched campaigns
successfully.
Joanne’s Take on
Accepting Change
Starting a not-for-profit entity
was not an easy task for
Joanne. However, her passion
to work closely with the US
Department of Justice to shape
national policies gave the
needed spark. She started out
at the San Diego Police
Department working patrol in
the highest crime area in the
city with an all-male squad.
The experience was
challenging, but very
rewarding. Her placement as
the first female officer in the
early ‘80s at the San Diego
Police Department Gang Unit
was filled with bad-to-worst
kinds of experiences. Many of
her male colleagues, including
her assigned partner, weren’t
happy with a woman being
assigned to the Gang Unit.
49 The Tycoon Magazine
50 The Tycoon Magazine
When the entire gang unit, except her, was called out by the sergeant, on a search warrant on one of her
own investigations, she transferred to the Child Abuse Unit. Law enforcement had few women at the
time and working child abuse with more female officers was an entirely new and welcoming universe.
Be it, pediatricians, nurses, or social workers, working Child Abuse provided an opportunity to work
with amazing female professionals with similar interests creating an environment of collaborations.
Today, after dealing with gender discrimination in law enforcement and working to change that with
her non-profit, , she says, “We have many male allies, but the field is still dominated by women with a
lot of diversity which is very rewarding. Unlike law enforcement, men are typically the minority in our
field of gender-based violence.”
A Multifaceted Pathway of Experience
From 1974-75, Joanne was an exchange student in Brazil where she became fluent in Portuguese and
later, Spanish. Coming from a low-income family, she taught English in Brazil to earn money. Her love
for working in the Hispanic community led her to be a paid bilingual officer at the San Diego Police
Department which lacked enough Spanish speakers for the population.
Working in law enforcement, Joanne had the privilege of honing her ability to efficiently triage
problems, and was instrumental in developing her personality as a whole. She believes that being born
and brought up amongst six brothers helped to prepare her to work in a male-dominated field. She also
appreciates the typing skills developed in high school because she still types about 120 wpm which
allows her to respond to the huge volume of emails she receives and responds to every day.
Apart from all this, Joanne feels grateful that she has traveled the world and explored different cultures
and diversity showcasing an even mix of distinctiveness and excitement.
A Note to Remember
Joanne believes in community and problem-oriented policing. Her appreciation and understanding
about people of color and other marginalized communities will surely play a key role in bridging the
gap between communities and empowering women in the long run.

Meet Licia Heath the CEO
of Women for Election
Australia In an exclusive
interview with The Tycoon
Magazine Licia shed light on her
career journey, challenges for
women in politics and in the
corporate world and her
perspective & advice to tackle
them.
Below are the highlights of an
interview between Licia Heath
and The Tycoon Magazine
Kindly brief us about your
current role and your journey
since the beginning of your
career.
I’ve had wonderful diversity
across my career. From studying
a Bachelor of Science
(Hydrologic engineering major)
at University; travelling overseas
and discovering the financial
services sector, which over a 20
year career saw me start as a
runner on a trading floor to being
part of a team that established and
grew an asset management firm
into a multi-billion dollar
organization; to now being the
CEO of a not-for-profit. That
variety in roles and breadth of
experience has exposed me to
many sectors and helped form my
views on what’s important in a
career.
How do you describe yourself
in one-word or one-sentence?
Determined, with a good mix of
humor and tenacity.
What is your source of
motivation?
The knowledge that engagement
in politics, particularly by those
less represented in our
governments, improves the health
of our democracies.
Kindly tell us about the
challenges you faced to
withstand the complexities of
the industry?
I’ve been working in the not-forprofit
space now for two years.
Somewhat naively, I thought a lot
of my corporate experience
would translate perfectly into my
new sector. Whilst some skills
have been helpful, I’ve had to
learn more on the job than I’d
anticipated. At times this has
challenged my patience and selfbelief
but it’s also strengthened
my resilience and resolve.
What are the frequent
challenges faced by women in
the corporate world and what
are the ways to tackle them?
In Australia, there are a number
of challenges faced by women,
not just in the corporate world but
across the full working spectrum
– and nearly all of those
challenges have policy solutions.
Australia has one of the
most expensive childcare
schemes in the OECD costing
parents on average 25% of net
income (vs 11% OECD average)
and the least generous, most
gendered parental leave (18
weeks vs 55 weeks). This has
resulted in Australia having one
of the highest part-time
workforce participation rates;
women retiring with, on average,
40% less superannuation,
and women over 55 comprising
the fastest growing segment of
our homelessness population. It’s
also led to Australia falling from
15th to 45th on the World
Economic Forum’s Global
Gender Gap Index.
Something that’s often forgotten,
is that our gendered policies
(upholding and perpetuating a
male breadwinner/female carer
culture) aren’t serving men
either. In Australia, the highest
cause of death amongst men 18-
45 is suicide, over 80% of which
is linked to financial issues, or
recent or pending
unemployment.
These challenges all have policy
solutions. Appropriate policies
are only implemented if those at
the decision-making table have
lived-experience in these
situations; otherwise they’re
blind to the problems in the first
place.
Kindly describe in detail about
your company and its unique
services/products.
Women for Election Australia is a
non-partisan, not-for-profit which
aims to strengthen our democracy
by increasing the number,
influence and diversity of women
in politics in Australia and
engaging more women in the
political process. It does this by
providing the very best training
and support for women to enable
them to enter political life, run for
office, support electoral
campaigns and move up the
ladder to higher elective and
appointed office.
Brief us about the current
industry scenario from your
perspective.
In Australia, 37% of our state/
territory MPs, 37% of our Federal
MPs and 35% of our local
Councilors are women. Without
equal representation of women
and diverse voices in our
Parliamentary chambers,
perspectives of the majority of
our population are not reflected in
policy and legislation. With a
balance of women and men in
Parliament, sharing their lived
experience and perspectives, we
could move swiftly to solve some
of these entrenched policy
barriers that are preventing
progress for many in our
communities.

What are your past
experiences, achievements or
lessons that have shaped your
journey?
In 2018 I ran for election myself.
It was in the federal seat of
Wentworth after our local
member, who was also the Prime
Minister, resigned after an
extraordinary political upheaval.
Running in that election was one
of the most positive experiences
of my life (exactly the opposite of
what most people told me it
would be). It was during that
campaign that I had scores of
women approach me and urge me
to keep going and also ask me if
they could buy me a coffee in the
future to ask how they could run
one day. It was at that point that I
realized what an opportunity we
had at Women for Election
Australia to expand our offering
and empower women across the
country.
What are your strategies to
contribute effectively in hyper
competitive market?
Forge strong relationships with
your clients. Build rapport and
trust. Demonstrate through your
actions that not only is your
‘product’ worthy of their
consideration, the service they’ll
receive from you along the sales
process is second-to-none.
How do you see yourself in the
near future? Tell us about your
future goals.
Our focus at WFEA currently is
to help 2000 women to run for
public office by 2022. It’s an
ambitious goal but all our energy
is being put into building the
capacity of women, from all
backgrounds and livedexperience,
to consider running
whilst also giving them the
tangible skills to succeed in their
campaign.
What would you advise young
women to succeed in the
workplace or as an
entrepreneur? How do you
perceive the role of mentorship
to aspiring women
entrepreneurs?
Understand your market and what
drives your competitors and your
clients. Then set up your
objectives based on those needs
and your ability to differentiate
yourself. Then work like hell!
Success isn’t about throwing out
lofty goals and hoping you get
there; it’s about incremental
improvement every day,
following your strategy and
executing. Whilst mentoring is
important (be it formal or
informal) also listen to your
instinct. I spent too many years
ignoring my internal voice about
what I could be capable of if I
just gave it a try.
My main advice to young women
would be: listen to that voice.
