I
N early February, my husband and consort William,
and I, together with the deputy Mayor Coun Susan
Burkitt and her husband Keith, were invited by Miniver
Academy to attend a performance of their latest
show, The Legend of Robin Hood, at Coal Aston Village
Hall.
Once again, the children of the Junior Showcase class, who
are all aged seven to ten, gave an excellent performance to a
packed hall.
Later in the month, we returned to Coal Aston to see older
children from the class perform a superb telling of the story of
King Arthur.
Both productions featured a performance on saxophone by
Keith Burkitt. Well done to all involved with both of the very
enjoyable productions.
William and I recently attended the Bier Keller evening at
Dronfield Civic Hall, organised by Dronfield Town Twinning.
More than 80 guests were treated to an evening of homecooked
German food, German beer and entertainment, which
was very enjoyable.
I recently met up with Dronfield athlete, Cosmo Johnson,
to congratulate him on his latest achievements and to find
out where the next exciting stage of his athletics career is
taking him. You can read Cosmo's news on page 34 of this
month’s magazine.
More recently, William and I were invited to view the
Dronfield’s Remarkable Women exhibition at Dronfield
Library. The exhibition and accompanying book showcase
the lives of four Dronfield women who left their mark on the
town.
It was a very detailed and interesting exhibition from Dronfield
Heritage Trust featuring photographs from their archives.

‘Beyond what we
had hoped for’
T
HERE are professionally-delivered home improvement
projects that you are satisfied with. And then there are
spectacular upgrades that surpass what you’d hoped for.
H2O Bathroom Solutions’ expert work at a property at Greenhill,
Sheffield, falls into the latter category.
Client Paul Rigby said his family’s new bathroom was “beyond
what we thought it would be like.”
The previous bathroom at the 1940s semi had been in place for a
number of years and it was felt the time was right for a renovation.
The “impressive” designs set out an L-shaped bath and shower to
make good use of every last bit of capacity in the 2.4 by 2.1 metre
space, with a WC, cupboard, radiator, recesses and LED lighting
completing the scheme.
When installation started, Paul was
amazed by the speed at which the
skilled fitters worked to strip
everything out of the bathroom and
then transform it into a gleaming
modern space.
“The guys who did the work were
brilliant. They were friendly and just
got their heads down and got on with
it,” he commented.
“A couple of issues came up as you
often get with an older house but they
were sorted with no fuss.”
The work was completed to H2O
Bathroom Solutions’ exacting
standards within two weeks with
minimum disruption to the household.
“The finish is fantastic and we can’t
fault a thing,” Paul added.

Inside and out, Dronfield Hall Barn’s restoration has been a big asset to the town
Barn’s £50,000 fund-raising target
Dronfield Heritage Trust, the charity behind
the management of award-winning Dronfield
Hall Barn, is celebrating ten years since
the ancient stone building was restored
T
O mark the first decade as a centre of excellence at
Dronfield Hall Barn, a tenth anniversary appeal has been
launched to help raise £50,000 to ensure the long-term
future of the community hub.
The money is for a wider range of education, cultural and
community support programmes along with essential
maintenance to secure The Barn’s future for generations to
come. It will also help fund kitchen upgrades, improvements to
communal areas, introduce new technology, and improve
volunteer facilities.
Restoration was completed in late 2015 when the Trust turned
the Grade II-star listed building into a unique Heritage, Arts and
Cultural venue which attracts more than 50,000 visitors a year.
The Barn houses an award-winning hospitality business which
includes a coffee shop renowned for its friendliness, and the
barn, garden and grounds area used for a variety of social and
corporate events as well as exhibitions and local history activity.
The Barn has also gained a reputation as a high-quality wedding
venue.
The £1.3 million project was originally financed by the National
8
Lottery Heritage Fund and public donations and is regarded as
one of the most successful heritage at-risk rescues in the region.
Chair of Trustees, Alan Powell, says: “It is a joy to know that the
Barn is a much-loved and valued part of Dronfield. The Barn and
beautiful grounds attract a wide variety of visitors from around
the country and our new fund-raising appeal will allow us to plan
for the next phase of development, and we’ll enjoy some
fantastic celebration events together.”
Catherine Tankard, a regular visitor, said: “The Barn has been
our favourite local place to visit since it first opened. It’s a
wonderful community space where you never fail to bump into
someone you know and stop for a chat. We have enjoyed a wide
range of events and feel extremely lucky to live so close to
somewhere that welcomes you in as a friend rather than just
another customer.”
Mike Baker, a garden volunteer, added: “Being one of the
Dronfield Hall Barn Garden team has introduced me to new
friends and our work brings together a very wide range of people
with different skills who help in the development of the site. We
give our time freely to maintain the gardens for visitors to enjoy,
and I hope that enjoyment draws generous donations to the
charity.”
The year’s fundraising highlight will be the Medieval Festival
and Banquet on Saturday, July 5th, to be held in the grounds and
The Barn Gallery.
Details about how to donate, and the events throughout 2025,
can be found at dronfieldhallbarn.org.
Looks superb and practical to use
CUSTOMER of Sheffield Kitchen and Bedroom Interiors
found that the proof of the pudding was in the eating. Or the
Christmas pudding, to be exact!
For a busy festive period saw the new kitchen in the 1930s
semi at Meadowhead, Sheffield, the highly successful focal point for
entertaining a large group of family and friends.
The customer first approached Sheffield Kitchen and Bedroom
Interiors after passing the company’s showroom not far away,
preferring to support local businesses where possible.
Her old kitchen had gained capacity from a garage knock-through,
but wasn’t making the best possible use of the space available, with
some building work required.
Enter Lisa and Paul and the team, who rose to the challenge of
making the customer’s wishlist come to life, project-managing all
elements of the major scheme that transformed the kitchen itself,
as well as the property’s utility room.
The customer was keen to ensure the lay-out flowed perfectly,
with Lisa’s designs achieving exactly that. Works included stripping
out the old kitchen, removing patio doors to create a new window
and removing a window to create a new door opening, together with
all the necessary electrics, plastering, and plumbing.
The utility room was fitted first so the customer had access to a
sink while the new kitchen was being installed.
New five-piece shaker-style doors in Mussel were fitted in both
rooms, together with colour co-ordinated units and brushed handles.
In the kitchen, the customer chose a Quartz worktop in White Sand
and, in the utility room, a laminate Duropal worktop in Quartz Stone.
Appliances supplied and installed included a Neff Slide & Hide
single oven, a compact combination microwave, a four-zone
induction hob and canopy hood, and a fully integrated dishwasher.
An ingenious LeMans pull-out storage unit was also fitted, giving
easy access to contents, and utilising otherwise blind corners.
For the finishing touches, the floors were covered with luxury vinyl
tiles, the walls decorated and new shelves put up in the utility room.
The customer praised the service provided by Sheffield Kitchen and
Bedroom Interiors from start to finish.
She said: “Lisa clearly has a very good eye for lay-out and how to
best use space
- she was
absolutely superb
with that. Paul was
spot on in sorting
out the tangle of
electrics. They
make a good team.
“Everything went
absolutely to plan;
that was very
impressive.”
Of the finished
result, she said: “It
looks superb and is
practical to use. The
proof of the pudding
came at Christmas
when the house was
full and everything
worked extremely
well.
“What I have now
is a living kitchen –
a warm and
comfortable room,
not just for cooking
and eating, but a
place where family
and friends can
come together.”

Training reaches highest levels
Independent
Sheepbridge-based

Apprentices

EMPLOYING an apprentice to work with
your company can be very rewarding but
it also comes with a big responsibility.
Rising to the challenge - and then some
more - is family firm Dalton Roofing who go
above and beyond expected levels when
training their SIX apprentices.
Dalton Roofing send their young employees
to Leeds College of Building for weekly
instruction for two years and have them work
on site to increase their experience. A further
stage of their education is heritage roofing
training at the Centre of Roofing Excellence in
Hereford.
In addition, Dalton Roofing have invested in
providing their own impressive classroom and
teaching rigs where Master Roofer Paul
Stevenson - the company’s site manager -
passes on the benefit of his 40 years
experience in the business.
This all combines to offer an unrivalled
training programme which will benefit the
company - and their customers - for years to come.
Said business founder and managing director Phil Dalton MIoR:
“Chesterfield is known as ‘Apprenticeship Town’ and we like to
think we are a big part of that.
“Personally, I think every company should employ apprentices if
they can; they are the future lifeblood of every business. I am a
former apprentice myself.
“Our young employees have won several prestigious awards
and we are always looking to set on our next apprentice.
“We are massive when it comes to training as there is always so
much more we can all learn. For example, our work teams have
recently been shown how to operate our fleet of cherry-picker
vehicles, including instruction on how to safely tow them.
“The results of our training programme ultimately benefit our
customers who can have peace of mind that the team working on
their rooftop know exactly what they are doing.”

EYE
Louise Jones,
Member of
Parliament for NE
Derbyshire, presents
her monthly
round-up for readers
of Dronfield Eye
I
MPROVING opportunity for young people was one of the
reasons I got involved with politics.
I can still remember growing up under the last Labour
government with its famous slogan of “education, education,
education!” and how true it still holds. But what has changed is
our understanding of what is actually needed to ensure every
child can flourish at school.
A child can have the best education in the world but if they
are hungry, they won’t learn a thing. That’s why I’m so pleased
we have rolled out the first wave of free breakfast clubs,
including at our Lenthall Infant and Nursery School here in
Dronfield.
This will ensure every child will be learning on a full tummy as
well as saving parents money every year.
There are other benefits too: Magic Breakfast, a leading
charity that supports breakfast clubs in schools, states that for
every £1 invested in school breakfast programmes, over £50
can be generated for the economy in the long term.
From visiting schools like Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School, I
understand why it’s so important for children to learn the skills
they need to set them up for the future.
A child entering secondary school this year will graduate from
their A-Levels in 2032. I am asking the Government to make
sure that we have a curriculum fit for the future so that children
at school today will have the best opportunities in the
workplace of tomorrow, be it a skilled apprenticeship or a
university place.
Of course, we must do more to support those children with
special educational needs. We held a debate recently in
Parliament where we discussed the difficulties facing parents in
Derbyshire, which recently failed its Ofsted inspection.
The Government has announced £740m of funding to
increase places for pupils with SEND, and we must ensure that
money is spent by the County Council.
If you have a problem with, SEND provision in the Dronfield
area or want to speak to me about other issues affecting
your child’s education, please contact me directly on
louise.jones.mp@parlaiment.uk. I look forward to hearing from
you!

Is twin council route the
way forward for county?
Derbyshire
could be
covered by
two councils -
one dealing
with the
north of the
county and
one the south
as part of an
impending
shake-up
of local
government.
A north-south local government split
could be on the cards for Derbyshire
D
ERBYSHIRE currently has eight 'lower tier' district or
borough councils and one 'upper tier' county council,
each with their own elected councillors. In December, the
government announced that all two-tier councils should
develop plans for reorganisation into a single tier in the
biggest reform of local government in over 50 years.
Leaders of the borough and district councils, together with
their counterpart at Derby City Council, propose two unitary
councils to cover the county – one in the north, and one in the
south.
Plans will be presented to the councils’ respective decisionmaking
bodies, where required, to approve the submission of
interim proposals to Government by 21st March. Public
consultation will be held before any final proposals are drawn
up.
In a joint statement, the leaders said initial work has
established two options, described as being of equal merit, that
meet the Government’s requirements.
Options
In the first option, Amber Valley Borough Council would be part
of a northern unitary council, alongside High Peak Borough
Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Chesterfield Borough
Council, NE Derbyshire District Council and Bolsover District
Council.
A separate southern unitary council would be formed by Derby
City Council, South Derbyshire District Council and Erewash
Borough Council.
In the second option, the structure remains the same,
except Amber Valley Borough Council would move from the
northern unitary council to join the southern unitary council
instead.
Both options are felt to maintain the integrity of the historic
county of Derbyshire and reflect the existing boundaries of the
borough, district and city councils.
The leaders said: “Local councils provide a vast range of
services that impact on everyone’s daily lives – supporting
communities and neighbourhoods to thrive and grow, and
creating opportunity for our people and places.
“As local leaders, we take very seriously this responsibility, and
in considering the very complex issues presented by
Government’s call to restructure councils we are committed to
working together with the shared goal of putting our communities
first.”
They added there would be the opportunity for the two
new unitary councils to work in genuine partnership and
collaborate on the delivery of all local government services, in
turn ensuring the best possible value for money to local
taxpayers.
“Most importantly, we believe these authorities would be of the
appropriate size – the two councils would serve similarly sized
populations of around 500,000 residents – to strike the right
balance between retaining the strong local connections we
already have with our communities and being financially
sustainable,” the statement continued.
“Our proposals also result in unitary councils of the right size
and blend to engage fully and ensure our voice is heard at
the East Midlands Combined County Authority and on key
strategic issues close to our borders, whether that be our Trans-
Pennine and city links to Manchester and Sheffield in the north or
our links to the East Midlands Freeport and Airport in the south."
The statement went on to say that the council leaders don’t
believe Derbyshire County Council’s plans for a single unitary
council covering the whole of Derbyshire, excluding Derby, and
serving a population of over 800,000 residents, is the right
approach.
Communities
“The organisation would be too large, and too far removed from
the diverse communities that we serve.
“The county council’s plans would create a ‘doughnut effect’
around the city – leading to inefficient delivery of services and
stifling economic and housing growth.
“It would also create significant disparity between the two
unitary councils, in terms of both population and taxbase, and
would therefore not meet the criteria the Government has set
out.”

crossing, along the narrow pavement, via the bottom of Princess
Road, then back across busy Chesterfield Road to the station.
Making matters more difficult for them on this occasion was a
large wheely-bin on the pavement, scaffolding outside one shop
and a temporary re-routing of the second pedestrian crossing due
to construction work.
Back at the station, matters of concern included no loudspeaker
platform announcements, no staff member to assist with access
and no signage indicating an alternative route to the footbridge
for people with mobility issues, pushchairs or heavy luggage.
Karen Lawson, an Arc primary care social prescribing link
worker, was the volunteer in the wheelchair. Even though she
The group encounter another obstacle
as they make their way between platforms
was accompanied throughout the 15-
minute detour, she told us the
experience had been difficult in many
respects.
“I felt quite vulnerable,” she said.
“Going round the corner where the
pavement was so narrow, I thought I was
going to fall over. Getting through the
scaffolding was a tight squeeze and, at
the temporary crossing, motorists
couldn’t see me.
“If I had been on my own in the
wheelchair, I’d have thought ‘where do I
go’ because there were no directions
and no-one to ask for help. I wouldn’t
have had a clue how to get across to the
other platform.
“Even as an able-bodied person sat in a
wheelchair, I wouldn’t consider that
roundabout journey again - especially in
the dark.
“There is a lot to be said for this lovely
area, but it is missing a trick because this
is stopping some people accessing
Dronfield.”
Claire North, the RNIB’s Campaigns
Officer for the East Midlands, was paying
her first visit to Dronfield. Visually
impaired Claire was accompanied by her
brother, Matt, but the pair will not be
making a return visit in a hurry.
After experiencing the lengthy journey from one side of the
station to the other, Claire told us: “I am shocked. Getting from
Platform 2 to Platform 1 because one of our party was in a
wheelchair is just appalling. At the RNIB we are working to try to
improve rail access for blind and partially-sighted people and I
don’t think I have come across a better example of a really bad
train station, unfortunately.
“To remove the loudspeaker announcements shouldn’t be
happening. Maybe there are sound pollution issues? Maybe
someone has complained? You would expect announcements at
such a busy station where there are no staff and fast trains
passing through.
“The platforms seem so small and if they are full, having trains
going by so close without warning could be lethal.
“There was also little space on the pavements where we went.
“We are currently campaigning against all unmanned train

stations. A touch-screen ticket machine
is unacceptable for someone with sight
loss.”
Sheila James of Clay Cross, also blind
and a volunteer for RNIB, told us: “The
man helping me off the train was lovely,
but then for someone sight-impaired or
completely blind to be left on a platform
with no staff and being expected to find
a way up wherever we went, across the
bridge, or down to the main road was
unacceptable.
“There is a footbridge but I wouldn’t
know where I was going and there is
nothing to indicate to sight-impaired
passengers where anything is.
“Having trains speeding through
unannounced is very dangerous. Even
though there is tactile flooring, it is a
metre away from the edge of the
platform and those fast trains. That’s too
close. I wouldn’t feel safe standing that
close, especially if there is no
announcement that a train is
approaching.
“And without announcements, I
wouldn’t know which train I was getting
on and I could end up in the middle of
nowhere.
“It’s as if they don’t really care about us - we’re not really
important.
“You don’t even have a public toilet here, so what do you do
then?
“The experience I have had today, I just wouldn’t want to come
here again. It shouldn’t be like that.”
Tracy Keepings-Crummack, outreach worker for Derbyshire Law
Centre who organised the fact-finding mission, said: “We are
having discussions and working with MPs, councillors, mayors,
Network Rail, Office of Rail and Road and rail companies to
improve accessibility at rail stations within Derbyshire.
“Dronfield Station has become a big part of our project and we
are in discussions with all relevant decision makers regarding the
ramp.
“The purpose of the Dronfield event was to access rail travel
and experience some of the barriers disabled passengers face.
We were supported by RNIB, Sight Loss Council, Accessibility UK
and NHS Social prescribers.
Why no announcements?
L
OUDSPEAKER announcements advising of approaching trains and delays, in
addition to safety warnings about fast trains passing through Dronfield Station,
came to a halt earlier this year.
Network Rail told Dronfield Eye: “Loudspeaker announcements are controlled by the
train operating company - Northern.”
Northern Trains explained: “There is currently no PA system at the station, but the
displays were designed for text-to-speech announcements so they can read out
information to customers. There has been an issue with this. We’re aiming to fix the
system as soon as possible, but are currently waiting on new parts to be delivered.”
Why no station gritting?
J
ANUARY’S snow and ice highlighted another safety issue at Dronfield Station
with no gritting taking place on platforms, steps, footways or the footbridge.
Station health and safety management, including platform surfaces during inclement
weather, is the responsibility of Northern. They told us: “We use a contractor, Mitie, for
gritting and platform clearing.
“During the recent snowfall we worked extremely hard to keep services moving and grit
as many station platforms as possible. But this was challenging, given that we manage
467 stations across the north of England.”
A spokesperson for facility management company Mitie confirmed to Dronfield Eye that
Dronfield is not one of the stations within their railways contract.
In addition to the icy platforms being used by passengers in January, around 300
school children also walked along themas a route through the station following the
closure of the wooden pedestrian ramp.
“We will hold another event later in the year where MPs,
councillors and rail decision-makers will experience some of
these barriers.
“Crucial elements of our campaign are to increase step-free
access, tactile paving, accessible toilets and improve passenger
assist.”
Added Tracy: “We want to gain as many lived experiences as
possible, not only from rail customers in Dronfield but throughout
Derbyshire, to support our campaign. Anyone who would like to
share experiences should get in touch on 01246 550674 or via
dlc@derbyshirelawcentre.org.uk”
Derbyshire Law Centre also hosted a meeting at Chesterfield
Town Hall to discuss Dronfield Station access and safety issues.
Those attending included Louise Jones MP, Coun Alex Dale,
Michael Muntus from Friends of Dronfield Station, Tim Hedley-
Jones from the Railway Heritage Trust and Dronfield Eye editor
Mike Firth. Network Rail were also invited to the event but
couldn’t make it.

Rev Dave’s garden centre
Rev Dave Walker, former curate in the
Parish of Dronfield, and associate Priest in
the Parish of Eckington and Ridgeway,
acquired the long-standing Birley Moor
Garden Centre in March, 2024. Twelve
months on, he reflects on the investment
T
HE year 2024 was a tough one for garden centres in the
UK; it just so happened to be the sixth wettest year on
record, and the year my son William and I came up with the
whacky idea to invest into the garden centre business.
As investments go, any savvy financial advisor would suggest
safe bets for investing your well-earned cash is in gold, diamonds
or - if you want to be a bit more risky - hi-tech and AI companies.
Ignoring the financial advisors, William and I went for the garden
centre investment.
It’s common knowledge everyone likes a good garden centre;
they are great for the community, and
there is a special sense of enjoyment
and fulfilment when you walk round a
garden centre.
Some may say gardens are quite
spiritual places. The Garden of Eden,
Gethsemane and the Hanging Gardens
of Babylon certainly have a special place
in history and religious texts.
And the idea of ‘Space Saving Hanging
Gardens’ could be a clever, modern twist
on a classic concept! Imagine if urban
planning incorporated those ideas today
- think vertical gardens and rooftop
oases that blend nature with city life.
I’m often asked why we invested into a
garden centre. I answer jokingly “God
only knows”. We certainly didn’t do it for
the money, it goes much deeper than
that.
It probably starts at the old, abandoned Dent Coal Mine, early
1970s when I was a young boy. Dent Mine was our community
playground, the place where my friends and I from the council
estate would have countless adventures.
I remember getting home when the streetlights had just started
to come on. My dad, an ex-steel worker, would ask me where I
had been.
“Out with my mates, dad” I would reply.
He would ask if I had been playing on the old Dent Mine,
covered in black coal dust, I would answer “No, dad”.
A gentle clip round the lughole followed, with dad’s stern voice
explaining: “It’s dangerous, and if you fall into one of those shafts
you will end up in Australia.”
Then, mid-70s, the council gave us a playground with swings,
Rev Dave Walker has big plans for his
Birley Moor Garden Centre venture
climbing frames, roundabout and a big steel rocking horse. It was
safer to play on the coal mine than ride that thing. An ambulance
would be called out weekly as kids would break some part of their
body.
In 1978, the Dent Mine was cleared and a new adventure
opened, Birley Moor Nurseries. I would look forward to Sundays,
visiting the nursery with my dad, “Grandpa Joe”, to collect his
potatoes, tomato plants and anything else we could grow at home.
Our back garden was like a miniature allotment.
This was the same for all the other kids who lived on the estate,
a day out with mum and dad to what soon became known as ‘the
Garden Centre’.
So that’s the reason for the investment, when I saw it had come
on the market, I had a duty to save this little piece of my
childhood, and a desire to share it with others.
Independent garden centres don’t make for a good return on
investment; for me it is a community project, and an opportunity to
give something back to the area where I was fortunate enough to
have grown up as a child.
The new gift range and pet products
are already demonstrating strong
potential, while the 262 tanks featuring a
variety of tropical fish continue to attract
large crowds.
By April, a Forest School will be in
operation, alongside ‘Rooted,’ which
offers horticultural education.
This summer, we aim to launch ‘Rooting
to Move More,’ hosted by English
footballer Callum McFadzean. Callum will
blend gardening with health and
wellbeing, in collaboration with Sheffield
Council's Sports & Leisure.
All of this can be enjoyed while sipping
a coffee or beer at Grandpa Joe’s
Potting Shed.
Garden centres and nurseries are no
longer places to go for just your seeds
and compost, they are much more than that. They are places for
community to meet and have a great day out.
The first 12 months have been an eye-opener for both me and
William.
As the master plans are now submitted to the council planning
team for review, we can already envision Birley Moor Garden
Centre becoming a must-visit destination.
Please support your local independent garden centres. While I’d
love for that to be Birley Moor Garden Centre, I’m referring to all
the local independents. The owners and their teams work
tirelessly, hoping for sunshine as it’s their biggest draw for
customers. Let’s show them our support and enjoy a great day out
while we’re at it!

Andrew Turner, of Dronfield Heritage Trust,

being inspired by a conversation about the

To mark this year's International Women's

Sarah, born in Dronfield in 1868, spent 47
years as a teacher and local councillor. Her
story gives an insight into what it was like being
a woman of authority in the late Victorian and
early Edwardian periods.
Charlotte was born in Barnsley in 1889 into a

become one of the wealthiest landowners in

Shutters Have Come Home
Easy to use and maintain, shutters are a product that
appeals from both the inside and outside of your home.
From a practical point of view, shutters improve energy
efficiency and add a feeling of security to a home. Shutters
are durable, easy to maintain, and allow you to control the
sun coming into a room, with a simple tilt of the louvres.
If there has been one issue, it’s delivery times - the last few
years have seen container ships take longer and longer to
arrive in the UK, with lead times currently averaging out at
around three months.
Says Maxine, co-owner of Bespoke Blinds & Poles: “We are
old enough to remember when shutters were
manufactured in the UK, then China came along and
changed all that. Although we also offer a great EU
product which comes in around six weeks, we are thrilled
to finally offer a UK-made shutter.”
Continues Maxine: “We have known the sales and
management team for many years and watched them
carefully develop this product into something beautiful.
Bonded wood combines real hardwood with the strength
and durability of PVC - stronger than wood, lighter than
MDF. It's fully recyclable and environmentally friendly.”
With invisible tilt as standard (no additional cost, like many
suppliers), and a choice of nine on-trend colours, these
shutters could be installed in as little as four weeks - well
before the container ships have even reached the UK!
Now in our 18th year of trading, we are also in our fifth

How the finished PEAK Gateway Resort will look
Resort will bring spending to area
We’ve been waiting many
years, but work has finally
begun on transforming land
between Sheepbridge and
Unstone into a major
leisure attraction. Ann
Fumukong-Boden, a board
member with Destination
Chesterfield, says the site
could have many spin-offs
for our local community
A
S we leave the cold winter
nights behind and the days
start to get a little longer, brighter
and warmer, I find myself
rediscovering the beauty of the north Derbyshire area.
The promise of spring and summer brings excitement, and I’m
sure many of you are ready to lace-up your hiking boots or hop
on your bikes to explore the stunning Peak District right on our
doorstep.
The breathtaking landscapes we are fortunate to call home
always inspire me. I strive never to take our location for granted,
and I know many of you share this sentiment.
Chesterfield’s proximity to the Peak District National Park is one
of our greatest assets, boasting 550 square miles of natural
beauty.
We also live close to many historic attractions with outdoor
spaces to explore, such as the Crooked Spire, Chesterfield Canal,
Hardwick Hall, Bolsover Castle and Chatsworth House, to name a
few. All are brilliantly connected via road and rail thanks to our
location in the centre of the country.
No doubt you will have heard about another upcoming
attraction which has now broken ground – the PEAK Gateway
Resort at Unstone. After a three-year transformation, we should
22
see new overnight accommodation, leisure and education
spaces, food and drink and retail.
The most exciting part is that the resort features car-free access
to the scenic trails and country lanes of the Peak District. Imagine
visitors exploring our area by cycling or walking from the site, or
hopping on the PEAK Express, the resort’s carless service.
We can certainly feel proud to showcase this visitor destination -
a development that is designed to bring more spending to our
area.
PEAK Gateway resort puts the environment at the heart of its
plans with consent for its own energy park, and 70% of the estate
dedicated to nature.
Many varieties of birds live there currently, including 14 from the
endangered red list. The land also supports forest schools to
introduce our children to the natural world.
As a local resident, even if you don’t visit the site yourself, you
will certainly feel its impact. Did you know that once fully
complete, PEAK has the potential to create thousands of jobs?
So, let’s all play our part as ambassadors for our area. The more
we highlight the things that make Chesterfield special, the more
we’ll pique the curiosity of potential visitors.
This positivity creates a ripple effect; an increase in visitors
leads to more businesses in north Derbyshire, which
ultimately means more jobs and prosperity for your family and
friends.
I’m eager to see our community working together to seize these
opportunities in the coming years.

Family centre desperate for help
A friendly centre which provides a valued
service for north Derbyshire children whose
parents have separated is striving to recruit
more volunteers. Deborah Wain reports
W
HEN couples separate, children often want to maintain
a relationship with both of their parents. However, it’s
not always easy to achieve if there is conflict, and it may be
difficult to make arrangements for a child to spend time with
the parent they no longer live with.
This is where the Chesterfield Child Contact Centre can help,
supporting parents to do what is in the best interests of their
child.
Each Saturday, the centre provides a safe, friendly and impartial
place for separated parents – and sometimes other relatives – to
see their children.
It has served hundreds of families from the north Derbyshire
area and beyond since it was set up in 1993 at Chesterfield
United Reform Church, when only 20 such places existed.
There are now 300 Child Contact Centres in the country, each
accredited by the National Association of Contact Centres.
The centre moved to its current premises at Chesterfield Baptist
Church, on Cross Street, near the old Saltergate football ground,
in September, 2023.
While the move has been successful, Chesterfield Child Contact
Centre has experienced a significant drop-off in volunteers and is
now keen to encourage more to come on board.
A spokeswoman for the charity said: “We are currently
desperate for volunteers aged over 18 to be able to carry on with
this much needed service.
“Volunteers don’t have to have had children of their own; they
just need to like children and have time to spare.
“Generally, the feedback from parents who use the centre is
very positive. On one occasion, a father told us that the
volunteers had all been fantastic and he was very grateful.
Seeing his daughter for two hours on a Saturday had kept him
going through the following fortnight.
“Before contact he had very little hope of reconnecting with his
daughter but, as relations had improved with his ex, he was
hopeful that at the next court
hearing he would be granted full
access.”
The team report that they
witness transformations in
parents’ ability to cope with the
emotional or physical needs of
their children – the friendliness of
the centre allows them to relax
and bond.
Families normally use the centre
for around six months, although it
is possible to extend their contact in certain circumstances. The
hope is that parents will then be able to continue their own
contact arrangements.
Chesterfield Child Contact Centre receives a lot of referrals from
Family Courts, but also from solicitors or Social Services. It also
welcomes families getting in touch directly via its self-referral
process. Children and families with special educational needs are
also supported.
On the day, eight families meet at the centre, each given their
own individual space with toys that are age-appropriate.
Volunteers help by welcoming families and showing them
around, as well as listening to adults and children without
judging, advising or taking sides. They must always put children’s
needs first.
26
Facilities for tots to
teens at the centre
Chesterfield Child Contact Centre is based
at the town’s Baptist Church
The role also includes making and serving refreshments and
preparing and tidying up the centre.
So what qualities should volunteers have? The centre wants to
hear from reliable and enthusiastic people who are caring,
tolerant and discreet. Volunteers are expected to offer their time
on Saturdays every four to six weeks from 11.30am until 4.30pm,
although they can do so more frequently if they want to.
The rota is flexible so volunteers can sign up for dates which
are convenient to them.
The spokeswoman said: “New volunteers have an initial
induction and then do two sessions as an ‘extra’ to get valuable
on-the-job experience.
“On-going support is available
from team leaders and the coordinator
and additional training
sessions are also arranged
regularly.”
As well as more volunteers,
the charity desperately needs
funding to safeguard its future.
It receives a small income
from a Ministry of Justice
grant and donations but this
barely covers half of running costs.
A few substantial donations have seen it through recent years
but this money is running out and the centre now needs to raise
considerable funds.
One way people can support the centre is through Easy
Fundraising which costs nothing, but when you buy online you
can raise cash for the centre. Last year nearly £500 came in from
that source.
All sorts of retailers participate, from Sainsburys to Tui, Boots
and M&S. Search for the Chesterfield Child Contact Centre at

Top tips for exam revision
School examinations are
on the minds of hundreds
of local young people
right now. Dronfield Eye’s
teenage correspondent,
Leuan Daughtrey, shares
some revision tips
W
ITH exam season fast approaching, I sat down with
Associate Deputy Headteacher at Dronfield Henry
Fanshawe School, Andy James, to talk about revision advice
during a time when it is crucial for students, asking his
opinions on three revision-based questions:
How would you describe the importance of
revision?
It’s crucial, because you have an entire qualification worth of
skill to remember.
Back in my day, revision wasn’t taught very well, we thought
that just reading through notes two weeks before an exam was
okay. But now, the research shows that we need to be active
with our revision.
teenage
EYE
We also encourage students to be very proactive and ask for
teachers’ support, I am always encouraging students to speak
with me or email me to talk about things such as trial exams, or if
they didn’t understand a topic, we want students to be tenacious
in how they involve teachers with their revision.
What are some top revision techniques that you
would recommend?
We use the phrase ‘little and often’ revision. Research shows
that we need to see information at least three times before we
remember it, and that we only remember 10 per cent of what we
read and 20 per cent of what we write.
So it’s not enough to be just reading through and rewriting
notes, it’s what we do with it that matters, like quizzing ourselves
and testing exam techniques.

useful.
It can be found on the DHFS website under the students’
section and then under the active examination revision
techniques section.
What would your advice be to help students
deal with exam stress?
Revision is all about reducing the amount we need to
remember. Planning rewards, treats, days off with family and
friends after revising is good, so then you have something to look
forward to and are then motivated.
Planning your revision timetable is essential; research says
instead of blocks of hours of revision, our brains work best if we
work in 20-minute blocks with five-minute breaks. Then after
maybe three or four blocks, have a longer break, for example a
half-an-hour break.
Also talk about how you are finding revision. If you are feeling
overwhelmed, talking to people can really help.
And just as a final note, teachers and other staff are here to
help students until their last exam. Please do contact your
teachers if there is anything you need help with.
As an A level student myself, I can confirm these techniques
do work and I hope this helps you all with your revision. I wish
you good luck for all of your upcoming exams!

Battery storage site public hearing
Residents join local councillors at the planning application hearing at NE Derbyshire District Council
ON 27th February, a public hearing was
held at NE Derbyshire District Council
offices at Mill Lane, Wingerworth, by the
HM Planning Inspectorate on whether to
give permission to build a Battery Energy
Storage System site in the greenbelt land
adjacent to Dyche Lane, Coal Aston,
directly behind New Leaf Garden Centre.
Representatives of the appellant, YLEM
Energy, attended the hearing together
with planning officers, Dronfield Town
Councillors and many residents.
The refusal of the original application by
planning officers at NEDDC and its
reasons were discussed and debated
alongside local and national planning
policies.
Coal Aston councillor and Dronfield
Town Council representative, Coun Mark
Foster, said: “I would like to thank all
residents who attended to oppose this
huge development in the most
inappropriate area of greenbelt
countryside.
“As a team, we put forward the
strongest argument we could on the
greenbelt, harm to the landscape, harm
to the conservation area and public
safety. We now await the decision of the
Inspector.”
Planning fees increase
THE March Town Council meeting heard councillors
raise concerns over the sudden and significant
increase in planning fees by NE Derbyshire District
Council, effective from April 1st.
Individual homeowners will
face a 105% fee increase, while
developers building more than
50 homes see only a 1.7% rise.
Chair of the Budget
Committee, Coun Angelique
Foster, commented: “This is
one more example of massive
rises in individual
householders’ tax burdens.
We’ve had huge changes in
Coun Angelique
Foster
Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance
Tax, Employers’ National
Insurance directly increasing
Council Tax and the removal of Winter Fuel
Allowance, to name a few. Everyone has felt the
squeeze on their finances.
“We expect this to be joined by more stealth
taxes such as hikes in Road Tax, changes to ISAs
and freezing of personal allowances in the
Government’s March budget.”
More roads set for resurfacing
THE Town Council received a report
from County Coun Alex Dale highlighting
that, after substantial lobbying, a number
of Dronfield roads are on the capital
programme list for resurfacing
improvements over the coming financial
year. These include Hilltop Road, Garth
Way, Salisbury Road, Snape Hill Close,
Gainsborough Road and several of its
cul-de-sacs, plus others in the local area.
This is in addition to significant
Coun Alex Dale
investment across Dronfield in recent years, with several well-trafficked roads
benefitting from either full or patch resurfacing, including Dyche Lane, Oakhill
Road, Holmesdale Road, Hollins Spring Avenue, Shetland Road, Snape Hill
Lane, Cemetery Road, Chesterfield Road, Stonelow Road and many others.
Coun Dale said: "Lots of residents have been talking to us about the
condition of our roads. We have successfully campaigned for our fair share
of the significant additional funding to improve our roads in recent years,
culminating in this year being a record level of spend on resurfacing for the
County Council.
“There's lots more to do, but the Council is committed to cost-effective
approaches, like the new Roadmender Asphalt, which gives a longer-lasting
seal, and patch resurfacing of the worst sections of several roads, to
ensure the budget goes even further to address residents' priorities."

Two rooms
transformed
GOING bespoke is probably never of more benefit than in a home where the
room lay-out isn’t standard.
For Mr and Mrs A’s project, the Supafit team were called upon to create
furniture for two bedrooms in a four-bedroom detached property in S18. Both
spaces have their complexities, such as sloping ceilings and beams.
But Supafit’s design expert Jenna loves a challenge and came up with lots of
ideas, ensuring the finished schemes tick all the boxes aesthetically and
practically.
The couple approached Supafit as the company had done work for them at a
previous property, but at the same time they asked other companies for their
thoughts on the commission.
Mr A said: “Jenna at Supafit was leaps and bounds ahead of other businesses
we spoke to. She was more engaged and listened to us before coming up with
ideas that we bounced around. Supafit were also good on price.”
For the main bedroom, Mr and Mrs A chose a matt cashmere flat slab door with
a contrast on a striking anthracite metal boxed headboard. A dressing table in a
matt stone grey completes the design.
Supafit have given the clients additional storage without losing any floorspace,
which they really appreciate.
Meanwhile, the couple’s attic bedroom also offers lots of storage as well as
looking stylish.
It wasn’t just Jenna who impressed; one of the fitters, Chris, overcame heavy
snowfall to do the job on one particular day, walking some distance with his
tools.
Overall, Mr and Mrs A say Supafit did a “great job”.
Mr A commented: “We were really impressed with the design, the fitting team,
who worked cleanly and to the time scale, the quality of the products, and how it
looks.

AY back in 1875, Queen Victoria was on
the throne, Benjamin Disraeli was Prime
Minister and cricket came to Coal Aston.
The club played on a ground next to The

remained the home of Coal Aston Cricket Club.
The first recorded game was against Greenhill
which Coal Aston won in one innings.
The year 1893 saw the first recording of Coal
Aston playing competitive cricket in the Sheffield
Sunday School League.
Coal Aston have played in numerous leagues and
in the early years it seemed they moved from
league to league on a regular basis. The majority
of games have been played in the Norton League,
Sheffield League and the South Yorkshire League,
now called the Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier
League. A second team was formed in 1906
playing in Division 3A of the Norton League with
the first team in Division 1.
The Chequers Inn played a big part for the village
cricketers not only providing the ground but also in running the
club.
The landlord in 1910 was a Mr W Haslam who was also the club
secretary. The rent for the ground was three shillings (15p). This
was paid to the brewers, Wheatley and Bates.
In 1966, the club had to move ground because the brewery
was developing the field they played on. They switched to
Stonelow in Dronfield, but kept the name Coal Aston. Because
they were playing with better facilities, they applied to join the

RONFIELD athlete Cosmo Johnson has achieved one of
his dreams by winning a track scholarship in America.
He’s hoping the achievement will spur him on towards
another goal - competing at the Olympics.
Cosmo, 19, has been training in athletics from eight years old
and has gone from strength to strength. He’s now part of City of
Sheffield and Dearne Athletics Club.
Cosmo’s main event is 400m hurdles where he was ranked
seventh in U20 men in the UK last year with a time of 53.97secs.
He also runs 400m and 4x400m relays.
A track scholarship has always been his dream and he has
sacrificed a lot to achieve this. He spends most of his spare time
training and keeps himself fit and healthy.
Cosmo had a couple of offers for a US scholarship and has
signed with the University of Charleston, West Virginia, having
been recruited by a specialist 400m hurdles coach.
He says he is ready to work hard to take his athletics to the next
level, competing in the National College Athletic Association in
the US. Alongside his training, he will study entrepreneurship at
Charleston.
Due to having dual nationality, last year Cosmo was also
selected by German club TSV Schott Mainz. He qualified to
compete in the German Senior National Championships, rubbing
shoulders with the best German athletes.

The rise of the sawbills
They are showy, distinctive and turning up on
local waters in increasing numbers. Prof Ian
Rotherham introduces us to the goosander
A
T places such as Graves Park at Norton in south
Sheffield, there is a bird that is becoming quite an
attraction on local ponds.
At Graves Park, the main place to view them is the old boating
lake which now has upwards of seven or eight male goosanders
and three or more females.
Particularly in wintertime, they are to be seen on local rivers,
reservoirs, canals and park ponds, from Poolsbrook, to Allendale
at Wingerworth, Holmebrook, Queen’s Park, Walton Dam,
Renishaw lakes, Graves Park and beyond. Our region is
surprisingly well provided with suitable waterbodies for
goosanders and other exciting birds.
The bird in question, the goosander, is a member of the family of
‘sawbill ducks’. These are very showy and distinctive birds, and
the males are especially striking.
They have a metallic, dark green head and neck and strikingly
hooked and toothed bill, which is ideal for catching their fish prey,
and hence the name ‘sawbills’.
The male’s bright pinkish-white flanks are truly stunning. Female
and young goosanders lack the markings of the male and with a
copper-red head and neck, and a grey back, are known as ‘redheads’.
Interestingly, this species first colonised into Scotland only in the
early 1870s, since then spreading throughout the whole of the UK.
They can be quite gregarious and will gather in flocks during the
winter, ranging from few birds to quite large numbers.
In our region, goosanders first bred successfully back in the
1980s, out on the River Derwent around Ladybower and at
Chatsworth Park. Since then, the population has grown and
spread eastwards into the Rother, Sheaf and Don valleys, where
there can be breeding birds, migrants and overwintering visitors.
My own first sighting was back in the 1970s on the River Lune
north of Lancaster whilst at university. Because birds eat lots of

fish, they were not popular with riverside landowners, water
bailiffs or anglers on rivers with salmon and brown trout.
Like us, being at the top of the food-chain they absorbed toxic
amounts of persistent pesticides like DDT. This caused broken
eggshells and plummeting breeding success.
Another big problem in cities like Sheffield, Manchester and
Leeds was gross river pollution until the 1980s. With high
pollution levels in the water and no (or at best, few) fish,
goosanders were limited to just a few wintering birds on local
reservoirs, and the few clean rivers.
Goosanders nest in tree cavities and will use nest-boxes. The
male birds I photographed at Graves Park began displaying quite
spectacularly around the females, with lots of splashing and
head-bobbing. So, I guess it is that time of year!

dog and cat restart vaccination at the price of our booster.

When did your pet last have a vaccination? Did you know that the WSAVA 2024
vaccination guidelines recommend annual vaccinations for certain diseases? Vaccination
numbers have declined in our pet population in recent years, and as a result we are seeing
an increase in cases of these diseases. Some pets can’t be vaccinated due to other health
conditions, so it’s important to have as many pets as possible fully vaccinated to provide
“herd immunity” to these more vulnerable patients. If it’s been over 15 months since your
pet had a vaccination, they will need a vaccination course to bring their immunity back up
to a protective level. We are currently offering these courses at a reduced price to help you
get your pet fully protected. Your appointment will include a full health check for your
animal with the vet and you can discuss any concerns you may have.

Rossini extravaganza
M
ORE than 30 years after retiring from composing
operas, Rossini wrote his epic Petite Messe Solennelle.
This extended work is a solemn mass although it is
neither solemn nor ‘little’ as might be expected from the
title, and he described it as the last of his sins of old
age.
The music, in all its glory, is magnificent, uplifting, reflective,
gentle, and exciting and Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir will
perform this mammoth work from 7.30pm on Saturday, 5th April,
at the Crooked Spire.
They will be accompanied by Jonathan Scott on harmonium and
the choir’s accompanist, Kathleen Hesford, on piano.
Alongside the choir there will be four professional soloists from
Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music.
Tickets: Adults £15, Seniors £12, full-time students and
unemployed £6, U16 free, via chestphilchoir.org.uk

Town’s VE Day
anniversary
celebrations
V
E Day 2025 on Thursday, May 8th, marks the 80th
anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
VE Day 80 is not only a tribute to those who fought for
freedom but also a powerful
reminder of the resilience and
unity that have defined our
country ever since.
At 9.30pm, Beacons
and Lamp Lights of
Peace will shine across
the UK, Channel Islands,
Isle of Man, and UK
Overseas Territories,
symbolising the enduring
strength of our
communities. From city
squares to village greens, we
will stand together in gratitude,
honouring the sacrifices that secured
our freedom.
In Dronfield, the VE Day service will be held at Sindelfingen
Park, beginning at approximately 9pm. Those attending are
asked to arrive around 10-15 minutes before the start.
Local musician Keith Burkitt and Miniver Academy will provide
music and entertainment on the night. The Dronfield Team
Ministry will lead a series of prayers and readings, before the
Mayor’s reading of the VE Day 80 proclamation.
The service will conclude at 9.30pm with the symbolic lighting
of the Dronfield Beacon, followed by a singing of the hymn, I
Vow To Thee My Country, to honour the past and celebrate a
future built on unity, hope, and peace.

EYE on food & drink
Is smart or casual on your menu?
Here’s an alert for foodies and fashionistas:
It seems there is a new acceptable way to
eat and dress. Mike Firth reports
S
O there we were, heading out into Sheffield city centre
for a family celebration at a busy restaurant. But what
do diners wear these days?
Suits and ties have long since disappeared for most of us, but
I’ve always believed that eating out comes with expectations of
dressing the part. On the evidence of what I witnessed, other
diners think differently.
The restaurant in question wasn’t an
exclusive venue, but it was no
McDonalds or KFC and it was smart
enough in itself with waiters and
waitresses suitably dressed. Not so
some of the customers I spotted.
First off was Vest Man. A smart T-shirt would have been
acceptable and no-one would have batted an eyelid, but dressing
down to what was essentially underwear caused more than
myself to wonder what was going on.
Just a couple of tables away from him was Shorts Man. Perhaps
he would not have looked so out of place had this been midsummer,
but it was an icy February evening and although there
was no dress code, he should really have known better.
Topping the lot, however, was High-Vis Man. He sauntered into
the restaurant in a flourescent yellow tabard, looking as if he had
just finished a shift on a building site. He hadn’t; this was just the
way he dressed down for a night on the town.
It wasn’t only the chaps I noticed; one young woman was
wearing something that resembled pyjamas.
And there was also one handsome chap there wearing a
football shirt. Who was it? Well, we won’t go into that just now...
So on this evidence, dressing smartly for a night in a restaurant
has itself gone out of fashion. Why should this be?
Covid gets much of the blame, of course. For a couple of years
we all stayed at home and relied on home cooking, food
deliveries and takeaway options. With limited social interaction,
we had no need to dress up to dine.
As soon as restrictions were lifted there was a huge surge in
people booking tables at restaurants - well, in pub gardens to begin
with. Many people were fortunate enough to go from one extreme
to the other, with eating out becoming almost a daily occurrence
and not the special event it used to be.
Instead of dressing up, it quickly
became the style to dress down
when eating out, even at smarter
restaurants. Many places will have an
issue with trying to balance customer
preference with their upscale atmosphere.
Have we lost something by abandoning all formality, or is it a
generational issue?
And another thing... Are people in restaurants much louder now
than they used to be?
I ask this after a couple of experiences at other Sheffield
restaurants where my wife and I were left exhausted after nonstop
high volume conversation barrages from nearby tables.
After one meal, I felt as if I knew the couple of diners in question
as if they were family members (and I was really concerned
whether their new piano would fit up their staircase).
So has anyone else similar tales to share of diners dressing right
down and turning up the volume? I would love to hear your
experiences. mike@heronpublications.co.uk

EYE on looking good, feeling good
It’s time to make a stand for fitness
There is increasing evidence
that, unless you are a wheelchair
user, sitting down too much
can be a risk to your health
T
O reduce our risk of ill health from
inactivity, we are advised to exercise
regularly, at least 150 minutes a week, and
reduce sitting time.
Studies have linked being inactive with being
overweight and obese, type two diabetes,
some types of cancer and early death.
Sitting for long periods is thought to slow the
metabolism, which affects the body's ability to
regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and break
down body fat.
Many adults in the UK spend around nine
hours a day sitting. This includes watching TV, using a
computer, reading, doing homework, travelling by car, bus or
train but does not include sleeping.
The UK Chief Medical Officers' Physical Activity Guidelines
report on GOV.UK recommends breaking up long periods of
sitting time with at least light activity.
However, there is currently not enough evidence to set a
time limit on how much time people should sit each day.
Nevertheless, some countries – such as Australia – have
made recommendations that children limit screen time, such
as TV and video games, to one to two hours a day. This is to
Consider using a
standing desk
reduce the time spent sitting.
The link between illness and sitting first
emerged in the 1950s, when researchers found
double-decker bus drivers were twice as likely
to have heart attacks as their bus conductor
colleagues.
The drivers sat for 90 per cent of their shifts,
the conductors climbed about 600 stairs each
working day.
Research on astronauts in the early 1970s
found life in zero gravity was linked with
accelerated bone and muscle loss and
ageing.
Evidence is based on observational studies,
which have shown an association between
sitting and ill health but not a direct cause.
Adults are advised to try to sit down less
throughout the day, including at work, when
travelling and at home.
NHS tips to reduce sitting time:
• Stand on the train or bus.
• Take the stairs and walk up escalators.
• Set a reminder to stand up every 30 minutes.
• Consider using a standing desk.
• Stand or walk around while on the phone.
• Take a walk break every time you take a coffee or tea break.
• Walk to a colleague's desk instead of emailing or calling.
• Swap some TV time for more active tasks or hobbies.

Loretta returns to the slopes
Loretta Marsh is back to doing what she loves
– all thanks to the power of MBST therapy
A
T 49, Loretta was diagnosed with early-stage arthritis
in her hip and was in constant pain. As a qualified ski
instructor, she struggled to perform at her usual level and
had to give up hiking in the Peak District and running.
When two steroid injections stopped working, a friend
suggested she try MBST therapy — a painless, non-invasive
treatment developed in Germany in the 1990s.
MBST uses magnetic resonance technology to stimulate
cartilage regeneration, increase bone density, and activate
the body’s natural healing process.
Treatment course
Loretta had her first nine-day treatment course at Chiro First,
Sheffield, in 2021.
“All I had to do was lie on a bed for an hour a day, watching
telly,” she said.
“At first, you think nothing’s happening, but after a week, I
could feel the difference.”
Two weeks after completing treatment, Loretta played a
pain-free round of golf and hasn’t looked back since. She
returned for follow-up sessions in 2022 and 2024 to maintain
the benefits.
“The impact has been completely transformative. I can ski
hard again and even run, something I thought I’d lost forever.
“Without MBST, I’d probably be well on my way to a hip
replacement.”
MBST’s Quasser Razzaq, left, at a recent MBST
conference in Germany
MBST is also used to treat nerve conditions like sciatica,
neuritis, and sports injuries. Loretta has since recommended it
to family and friends, including her mum.
“Everybody has said it helps,” she said.
AWARD-WINNING TECHNOLOGY FOR THE
RELIEF OF PAINFUL, ARTHRITIC AND
DEGENERATIVE CONDITIONS
Relieve pain and live an active life with MBST
“It literally changed my life...
When I found MBST, I doubted its
results. Suffering from a crippling
back problem, I exhausted all
options before surgery, but I was
able to avoid that thanks to the
success of MBST treatment.
It’s mind-blowing!!”

Bad
weather?
What bad
weather?
With amazing fortitude, Dronfield Eye
editor Mike Firth and wife Helen selected
perhaps the two best weather weeks to
enjoy their holidays in Scotland last year
T
HE summer of 2024 was a mostly grim one with
plenty of wet and windy days. And nowhere was
it more depressing than in Scotland where there was
snow on Ben Nevis for eight consecutive days in
June, a temperature of minus 2.2deg C recorded near
Inverness in July and, in many parts, rain every single
day of the month of August.
But there were a couple of glorious weeks when temperatures
rose as the sun shone from morning until night. Amazingly, they
were the two weeks wife Helen and I holidayed with our dog,
Harry, on Scotland’s west coast. Lucky or what?
A week in May spent in and around Argyll saw the golden gorse
and bluebells look a real picture beneath an almost cloudless sky
and reflections around the waters of Loch Fyne and the Crinan
Canal were mirror-perfect.
Driving down the 60-mile cul-de-sac that is the Kintyre
Peninsula, we enjoyed views across spectacular, white-sanded
beaches on the west coast, working up an appetite for a special
Scottish breakfast in the open air beside the harbour at the
whisky town of Campbeltown. This place really is a Scottish
outpost; spare a thought for the players of the town’s football
team who make a minimum round trip of more than 200 miles for
all of their away fixtures.
Staying in the coastal village of Ardrishaig for the week, our
accommodation had the blue waters of Loch Gilp to the front and
68
Loch Gilp, opposite our accommodation at Ardrishaig
The canal basin at picturesque Crinan in Argyll and Bute
boats sailing by on the beautiful Crinan Canal which passed the
top of the back garden. And at Crinan we tucked into glorious
seafood including a wonderful lobster hanging over both ends of
the plate. Surprisingly, the chef offered us a £10 discount, saying
the catch of the day was a little on the small side!
All the locals told us we
didn’t know how fortunate
we had been with the
weather. Could we strike
lucky again in September?
You bet we could!
This time it was our first
visit to the Isle of Skye
where, once again, we
were blessed with warm
sunshine almost all the
time for a whole week.
When a shower did arrive,
it brought along
spectacular rainbows
which were doubly
beautiful in the waters of
the island’s lochs.
Highlights included
wandering along more
white-sanded beaches,
Bluebells by the beach in Argyll
admiring the spectacular mountains of the Cuillin ranges, strolling
alongside the Fairy Pools, standing in awe just a few feet from the
60m high Mealt Falls at Kilt Rock and spotting dinosaur footprints
on the beach at An Corran.
On the wildlife front, we photographed basking seals, golden
eagles and white-tailed sea eagles. Then one morning we were
awe-struck to see four young deer strolling through our
accommodation’s back garden.
Again the locals assured us we were so fortunate to have had a
week of glorious weather. One employee at a distillery even told
us it had been the best week the west of Scotland had enjoyed
since May!
