Discover the Wonders of the
Solar System Walkway
Nestled within the expansive 200-acre Lacey Recreation Complex in Oskaloosa, Iowa, lies an extraordinary fusion of
recreation and education: the Solar System Walkway. This unique attraction, 25 years in the making, was the brainchild
of local visionary Joe Crookham, a man whose love for astronomy was born from summer train rides to Chicago during
his childhood.
Each year, Joe would visit his aunt and cousin, Gordon Stewart, and explore the many museums in Chicago. Among the
exhibits, the solar system display captivated him the most, leaving a lasting impression that shaped his dream of sharing
the wonders of space with
others. Years later, Joe, through
the resources of his company,
Musco Lighting, assembled a
dedicated team to bring that
dream to life. With Tony Rivera as
the science enthusiast, Mike
Brangoccio as the artist, Jesse
Greenhalgh and his facilities team
as the project managers, and
many other contributors, the
vision for the Solar System
Walkway began to take shape.
6
The concept of the walkway is simple yet profound: to make science, often perceived as "dry," engaging and
accessible to the public. The project needed enough space to do it justice due to the vastness of the solar system, and
the Lacey Recreation Complex—already a hub for youth sports and activities —offered the perfect setting.
Recreation in Oskaloosa has a rich history dating back to 1969 when two local police officers, Wendell Smith and Joe
McGrew, recognized the need for sports and recreational opportunities for underserved youth. They founded the Police
Athletic League (P.A.L.), which eventually led to the creation of a community-driven recreation facility. The original five
acres, donated by Nita Barnes, became the foundation of what is now a sprawling complex serving thousands of local
families with numerous soccer fields, the 8-plex and baseball diamonds, along with the Community Stadium.
Today, the Solar System Walkway seamlessly integrates with the Mahaska Community Recreation Trail, a 13.5-mile
pathway that winds through the complex and community. At its heart lies the stunning 86-foot-wide Sun Dome,
symbolizing the Sun, and surrounded by replicas representing all nine planets, from Mercury to Pluto. The walkway
spans 2,600 feet in total, with a kiosk for each planet’s distance from the Sun scaled down to represent their real-life
separation in space. For instance, while the Earth is 93 million miles away from the Sun, its kiosk is placed just 67 feet
from the Sun Dome in this unique model.
The experience is not just visual—each kiosk features interactive displays with audio and video, bringing the science of
space to life with information from NASA and the European Space Agency. Visitors can learn about the solar system’s
scale, planetary features, and even view special events like eclipses and meteor showers. These displays are designed to
update dynamically, ensuring the latest astronomical data is available.
The future vision for the Solar System Walkway includes even more exciting features, such as a telescope on Pluto’s
platform that will allow visitors to view celestial objects in real-time. This addition will make the Solar System Walkway a
living, evolving educational space that can adapt to new discoveries and provide ongoing engagement with local
schools and institutions.
2060 Stadium Dr., Oskaloosa, Iowa
The Solar System Walkway at Lacey
Recreation Complex is not just a tribute to
space exploration but also to the power of
community, education, and recreation. It’s a
testament to Joe Crookham’s lifelong
passion for astronomy and his desire to
make science accessible to everyone,
particularly those who may never have the
chance to visit a major city museum.
Whether you’re a space enthusiast, a curious
visitor, or simply looking for a beautiful walk

A Timeless Ride.....
The charming town of Oskaloosa has a little-known secret that draws both locals and visitors from far
and wide: The Rollin’ Oldies Car Club. This group of passionate car enthusiasts is more than just a club –
it’s a living tribute to the golden age of the automobile, where shiny chrome, classic engines, and
vintage designs take center stage.
Every year, visitors flock to Oskaloosa for the club’s famous car shows, where rows of classic cars line
the streets, each with a story to tell. From the sleek curves of 1950s Chevrolets to the bold, boxy
designs of 1960s Fords, these cars are more than just machines. They’re time capsules, taking visitors
on a nostalgic journey.
One of the most popular events is the Rollin’ Oldies Car Show held each summer, where the city streets
transform into a colorful mosaic of vintage vehicles. As the engines hum and the sun shines off the
polished surfaces, spectators stroll along the rows, chatting with owners who are more than eager to
share the history behind their prized possessions. It’s not uncommon to hear tales of the restoration
process – hours of elbow grease, dedication, and sometimes a little luck – to bring these beauties back
to life.
.....Through Oskaloosa
But the fun doesn’t end with the car show. The Rollin’ Oldies Car Club also hosts regular Graffiti Nights
throughout the year, where enthusiasts bring their cars to the Community 1st Credit Union parking lot. It’s
a chance for visitors and community members to look at the cars and enjoy each other’s company.
Oskaloosa itself is a town that takes pride in its history, and the
Rollin’ Oldies Car Club is a living testament to that legacy. Whether
you’re a car fanatic or someone who simply appreciates a good road
trip, the club offers a memorable experience that transports visitors
back to a simpler time, when life seemed a little slower, and every
drive was an adventure.
Be sure to mark your calendars for a car show in Oskaloosa.
Follow them on Facebook at Rollin’ Oldies Car Club.
It’s not just about the cars—it’s about the stories,
the people, and the unforgettable memories waiting
to be made on the open road.

Spirit Cafe
Building Skills, Serving Freshness
When you walk into Spirit Cafe, the energy feels contagious.
Customers enjoy fresh, locally sourced meals. Behind the counter,
students buzz with activity, mastering skills that will carry them far
beyond the restaurant’s walls.
The restaurant is located on the historic Oskaloosa Downtown
Square, an extension of the Oskaloosa High School campus, where
students gain real-world experience to prepare them for their future.
It wasn’t always this vibrant. “When we first toured this building, it
had been empty for years,” said Sarah DeRonde, the program’s
teacher. “It was dark, didn’t even have electricity, and needed a lot of
work. But as we walked through, we knew it held great potential.”
From that point in October 2023 to the opening in late April 2024,
the transformation was nothing short of remarkable.
MORE Than a Cafe
Spirit Cafe isn’t just about serving breakfast and lunch—it’s a
program designed to equip students with employability skills.
“This isn’t their final destination,” DeRonde said. “We want students
to gain the skills they need to get hired in our community and
become sustainable workers.”
Students take on a variety of roles, from rolling silverware and
cleaning to preparing food and managing the front counter and
waiting on customers. Some students even work as managers,
overseeing operations and assisting peers.
“We have students who clock in before school to set up and prep,
while others close the cafe, counting the deposit and making it bank
ready,” DeRonde said.
The cafe’s inclusive nature is a cornerstone of its mission.
“Our program is open to students of all abilities. We
pair mentors with peers who need social or physical
support, creating a space where everyone learns and
grows together,” DeRonde said.
1212
See the Spirit Cafe menu here:
GROWING Personally and Professionally
The students’ growth has been profound. “We’ve placed several students in
community jobs, and the transformation in their confidence and abilities is
incredible,” DeRonde shared. “We’ve seen kids go from being too shy to speak
to strangers to confidently interacting with customers.”
The program also teaches essential life skills.
“Many students don’t know how to fill out tax forms or understand how
paychecks work,” DeRonde said. “It’s enlightening to see what they need
to learn and rewarding to guide them through it.”
COMMUNITY Support
The Oskaloosa community has been instrumental in the cafe’s success.
“The support has been tremendous not just financially, but also by coming in
and creating a positive atmosphere for the students,” DeRonde said. “We’re so
grateful for our community. They’re the backbone of this program.”
This encouragement motivates the students and reinforces the cafe’s mission which is to
envision a community where every individual is empowered to thrive and contribute to society.
Preparing for the FUTURE
A FRESH, Evolving Menu
Spirit Cafe’s menu reflects its commitment to quality. “We use
fresh, local ingredients whenever possible,” DeRonde said. “The
kids chop, dice, and prepare everything daily, from meats to
vegetables. Our goal is to serve food that’s fresh and tastes great.”
Popular items include monster cookies and the cafe’s
signature potato soup, both of which commonly sell out
daily. However, the menu is constantly evolving.
“We’re proud of what we serve, and it’s exciting
to see it go over so well,” DeRonde said.
What began as a quiet vision for a small cafe has grown into something much
bigger. “We thought we’d have maybe four to six customers a day,” DeRonde
said. “But the response has been overwhelming. The students have adapted,
and it’s been great preparation for their future.”
At Spirit Cafe, fresh food and life-changing experiences are on the menu daily.
Students leave with skills, confidence, and a connection to their community.
Customers leave satisfied and inspired, knowing they not only had a great
meal, but also helped the school and community.
“This is all about learning—learning skills, growing as individuals, and building
a stronger community together,” DeRonde said.

In the heart of Oskaloosa, Iowa, a culinary treat awaits
those with an appetite for flavor and fun. Welcome to
Osky Food Park, a unique culinary destination that’s
been stirring up excitement and delicious bites since
it opened. If you’re wondering what makes this
place so special, imagine the vibrant food truck
scene of a bustling city dropped right into the
charming, laid-back vibe of small-town Iowa.
...A Tasty Adventure in Small Town Iowa
Food Trucks Galore!
32
“Osky Food Park was born around
the desire to bring a variety of
food options to Oskaloosa while
also providing a fun and new
outdoor dining experience. We
have the pleasure of partnering
with local small business owners
to offer both familiar and unique
food options and bringing them to
you all in one place,” said the
creator of Osky Food Park,
Loken Vande Vegte
What sets Osky Food Park apart is its rotating roster of food trucks. No two visits are ever the same
because the lineup changes frequently, offering everything from gourmet burgers and tacos to BBQ,
and ice cream. Whether you’re a hardcore foodie or just looking for a quick bite, the park has
something to tantalize your taste buds.
The variety doesn’t stop there, with food
trucks specializing in everything from
international flavors to local comfort
foods. The ever-changing lineup ensures
you’ll never have to eat the same thing
twice unless you want to!
More than just Food
Vande Vegte noted, “It has been wonderful to see the amazing support
the community has for Osky Food Park and for the different events that
we help put on in the community.”
Community Vibes The Food Park isn’t just about food;
it’s a social hub.
What makes the food park stand out is its commitment to the
community. Local entrepreneurs and chefs get the chance to showcase their culinary creations without
the overhead of a traditional restaurant. Foodies from all over southeast Iowa and beyond have
started making the trip just to see what’s cooking in Oskaloosa.
The park also hosts fun events like Movie Nights, where featured movies are played on the large LED
screen, and outdoor games like cornhole and giant Jenga create a festival-like atmosphere.
It’s the perfect way to end the workweek or kick off a weekend of fun.

SEEK & FIND on the trail . . .
Climb aboard on one of Mahaska Community
Recreation’s guided tram tours and take in all
the sights and hidden gems on the 13.5 miles
of paved recreational trail in Oskaloosa and
University Park. Spend a couple of hours
learning the rich history of the town all while
enjoying the view.
The
Sun Dome
The yellow dome that you see is
the Sun or the center of our Solar
System. It’s the starting point of
the guided tour. The dome representing the Sun is 86’ in diameter
and 43’ tall. There are 9 spheres representing the 9 planets placed
around the dome. Each sphere shows the size relationship between
the sun and each planet.
In 2002, approximately 80 acres was purchased. This land now
contains the 5-plex little league diamonds and 2 Babe Ruth
Diamonds. The concession stand at the 5-plex was
designed to mimic buildings built in National
Parks, during John Fletcher Lacey’s time.
The trail is on the land of 54
different property owners,
allowed with an easement. MCRF
purchased three properties along
the entirety of the trail. The first
section poured November 11, 1999.
