Book club

Terrific books to read over the long weekend this Easter.

Jojo Moyes’ We All Live Here is just a

glorious, funny, delight, from start to

finish. Lila wrote a best-selling book

about keeping your marriage alive ...

before discovering her husband was

having an affair (and now a baby)

with a mum at the local school. She’s

now broke, left with two challenging,

wayward daughters, an elderly

step dad who’s moved in, and her

estranged father who’s arrived on the

doorstep looking for a place to stay.

On the plus side, there’s a couple of

hot men lurking ... jolly helpful since

she’s got to finish her new book and

the publishers are looking for hot

and sexy single mum adventures ... ‘a

literary push-up bra’ is how they put it.

Hysterical. Warm and wise too ... since

she finds out that even a person you

thought you could never forgive, may

just have something to teach you

... about love, friendship, and family.

Micheal Joseph

For these and more brilliant book

club reads, visit exclusivebooks.co.za

Oh we do love a Gregg Hurwitz

thriller. Orphan X - Evan Smoak, former

government black ops assassin, is

known to be the man who’ll be there

for you in your darkest hour. And he’ll

rain hell and thunder on those who

caused you pain. But betray him,

as Evan’s long-time gunsmith and

armourer has just done ... and it’s war.

Nemesis - a roller-coaster of thrills.

This month we’re serving port-style

cocktails at our book club. For a

Porto Urbano, mix equal parts chilled

De Krans Premium Cape Ruby and

cranberry juice with a dash of lime

cordial. Serve in a martini glass with

crushed ice, garnished with orange

peel and a maraschino cherry. Even

easier - and perfect if the weather’s

warm - a Pink Soda. Pour a tot of

De Krans Cape Pink into a tall glass,

top up with soda water, and garnish

with fresh fruit. Look out for De Krans

Voice, vibes and the unstoppable

energy!

If there’s one person

who knows how to light

up a room - whether through

a microphone, a melody or the

screen - it’s Minnie Ntuli. The bubbly

Gagasi FM radio presenter, singer and

actress has made a name for herself

with her infectious energy, passion

for storytelling and a personality

that’s as bold as her career

moves.

16 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga April 2025

A competitive start

Minnie grew up in a home where

excellence was the standard. "My

family was competitive in a healthy

way - whether it was school, sports or

anything we pursued, we had to give it

our best," she says. This mindset set the

foundation for a career that would see

her trying, failing and trying again -

until she got it right.

From campus radio to

national fame

Minnie’s love affair with

entertainment started with campus

radio at Durban University of

Technology, but it wasn’t until after

her time at UKZN (where she was

part of the student representative

council during the Fees Must

Fall movement) that she fully

embraced her dreams. "I had

been auditioning for Idols SA for

years! But I finally made it to the

top 16, and that was a gamechanger."

Her talent didn’t stop at

singing. Minnie and her

cooking partner impressed

South Africa when they

made it to the top ranks

on My Kitchen Rules.

But the biggest twist?

"That’s where East Coast

Radio spotted me for

commercial radio! It was

a crazy turn of events."

Five years at East Coast

Radio shaped her as a

broadcaster, and now,

at Gagasi FM, she's

using her platform to

make a real impact.

Radio with a

purpose

"I love that radio

is about people,"

Minnie says

passionately.

At Gagasi FM,

it’s more than

just playing music and having fun on air - it’s

about making a difference. "We help fix schools,

provide water and sanitation, and give back to the

community in real ways. That’s what makes radio

fulfilling for me - it’s not just talk; it's action."

And when it comes to connecting with her

audience, Minnie believes authenticity is key.

"People relate to the real you. If you’re natural

and true to yourself on air, everything flows."

Staying inspired

A decade into radio, Minnie stays on top of

her game by studying global trends. "The

best stations are overseas, so I listen, learn

and bring that knowledge home - South

African style!" Her secret? Packaging content

in fresh, innovative ways. "It’s like marketing -

the product stays the same, but the way you

present it makes all the difference."

When setbacks come (as they inevitably do),

Minnie leans into introspection. "You can’t

control what happens, but you can control

how you react. Stay level-headed, keep parts

of your life private and know when to move in

silence." Wise words from someone who's seen

it all in the industry.

Stepping into the spotlighT

Minnie will also be lighting up the screen

in the latest season of The Real Housewives

of Durban, where she promises to reveal a

different side of herself. “It’s probably one of

the most challenging reality shows I’ve ever

done,” she admits. “You’re doing a show, but

it’s real, and it challenges every part of you.”

Despite the challenges, she embraced the

opportunity to connect with women from

all walks of life, building a sisterhood while

staying true to herself with authenticity and

kindness.

A fun fact you didn't see coming

Think you know Minnie? Well, surprise - on top

of everything, she's also in a worship team at

Encounter Church in Ballito! And her go-to

mood booster? "I love gospel music. Right now,

I trust in God by Elevation Worship is my jam. It

reminds me that nothing happens by accident

- everything is in God’s hands."

Riding for a

better future

Ballito entrepreneur Ian Wilson has found deep fulfillment in establishing Impact Cycle,

an NPO that teaches kids to ride bikes, motivating them to attend school and develop

resilience. A veteran in the mountain biking world, Ian has spent over two decades

developing the sport. From building South Africa’s first mountain bike trail at Giba

Gorge to hosting Wild Coast tours, his passion is connecting with people and giving

back to communities.

Thirteen years ago, he launched Glide & Ride,

an extra-mural programme using bicycles to

develop children’s mental resilience. While

it may seem like simple cycling lessons, Ian

emphasises its deeper purpose: “The riding

is just a by-product. It’s about connecting with kids

and rewiring their brains to believe they can do

hard things.”

One of the key elements is how kids are taught to

handle setbacks. “When a child falls, we don’t rush over

to comfort them. Instead, we celebrate their courage.

We say, ‘That was amazing!’ and get them back on the

bike,” Ian says. This approach instils resilience, showing

kids that failure is just a stepping stone to success.

Text: Jennifer Campbell

The start of Impact Cycle

Nine years ago, Ian introduced Glide & Ride into

Mshwathi Memorial Primary School, a rural school

near Ballito, offering free cycling as a reward for school

attendance. The initial turnout was slow, but within

weeks, the class was full. Unexpectedly, this initiative

had a ground-breaking effect: school absenteeism

dropped by 98%. “A lecturer from UCT came

in raving, ‘You’ve solved a national

problem!’ I had no idea what he was

talking about at first,” Ian recalls

with a laugh.

Seeing the impact, Ian recently

formalised the project into

an NPO called Impact Cycle.

“Poverty is a mindset, not just

financial. If we can teach kids

that work equals reward, we can

start shifting that mindset from a

young age.”

Careers on two wheels

Beyond education, Impact Cycle addresses

unemployment by training young adults as coaches.

“We now have a self-sustaining model - schools have

the bikes, and local coaches earn a living running the

sessions,” Ian says. Despite concerns about theft, the

donated bikes remain untouched. “The community

values what we’re doing. They see someone investing in

their children and they protect it.”

Riding towards the future

Ian’s dream is to expand Impact Cycle to 20 000 schools

across South Africa. “Imagine the ripple effect - more

kids in school, fewer teenagers falling into drugs or early

pregnancies, and thousands of jobs created.”The initiative

is evolving to include environmental education, food

sustainability, and financial literacy. “If we instil these

lessons early, we set kids up for real success.”

Despite challenges - self-funding, battling for corporate

support, and running multiple businesses - Ian remains

unwavering in his mission. “I didn’t set out to do this. I

just wanted to give back. But now, I know this is what I’m

meant to do.”

A

life

in

song

Text: Jennifer Campbell

René Tshiakanyi is living

his dream as a musician,

performing regularly in

Ballito and surrounds.

But his journey has been

anything but predictable.

From a childhood in the

DRC to busking on the

streets of Durban, he’s

learnt plenty about hard

work, resilience and

the power of music to

transform a life.

Born in a mining town in the

Democratic Republic of Congo

as one of 12 siblings, René grew

up in a household filled with the

sounds of James Brown, The Beatles,

Bob Marley and Edith Piaf. Music was

more than just entertainment - it

was a gateway to another world. "I

remember when I would go to sleep,

and the melody would make me feel

like I was travelling," he says.

As a child, he wasn't considered a

particularly good singer. Instead,

he had a composer's ear - hearing

harmonies and melodies that weren't

in the sheet music. "The choir

conductor thought I was messing

around," he says with a laugh. "Only

later did I realise it was actually a

composer's gift."

Finding his voice

Music became his true calling at the

age of 24. By then, war in his home

country had left his family with

nothing, and his father, once the

family's provider, was unwell. Writing

poetry became a way to process

the chaos. A local magazine started

publishing his work, and a group of

friends encouraged him to set his

words to music. With the help of a

neighbourhood guitarist, he wrote

his first song, ‘La presse s’efface’, a

tribute to all the journalists who were

killed trying to do their jobs.

When René moved to Durban in

2008, he had just $50 and a guitar, and

barely spoke English. He had trained

as a mechanical engineer, but the

policies at the time wouldn't allow

him to work in his field.

The Simbithi

Experience

Experience the

natural beauty of the

Fig Tree Restaurant, nestled

in Simbithi Country Club.

New menu launching soon!

This

April, René

will be performing

every Friday evening at

Simbithi Country Club with a

fresh musical theme: Everything

Country Music and More.

His goal is to keep surprising

audiences - this time blending

country classics with pop

legends like Billy Joel and

Elton John.

So, he did the only thing he could -

he took his guitar to the streets and

started busking.

That decision led to a life-changing

encounter with English teacher Jackie

Saaiman who heard his music. She

saw something in him - not just talent,

but potential.

"She told me, 'You have a bright future,

but there's a handicap standing in your

way,'" René remembers. That "handicap"

was the language barrier. Jacky took it

upon herself to teach him English, and

he ended up moving in with her family.

"She became my South African mother.

She built me up."

A career built on passion

Fifteen years later, René has carved

out a successful career as a musician,

performing regularly at local venues

like Simbithi Country Club, and even

for two South African presidents. He’s

become a multi-lingual artist, singing

in French, English, Portuguese, and

Italian - a skill he developed through

sheer necessity and a realisation that

he has an aptitude for languages.

"If you had told me 10 years ago that

I'd be singing in multiple languages in

South Africa, I would have thought you

were smoking Bob Marley," he jokes.

But more than the music, it's the

connection with people that drives

him. "Nothing feels as great as a good

gig," he says. "When someone tells me,

'We got married to your song,' or 'Your

music brings our family together,' that’s

the real reward."

For René, music is a way to bring

people together, to heal, and to create

joy. "I never planned for this life," he

admits, "but I wouldn’t trade it for

anything." Details: IG: @renetshiakanyi

Working smarter, living better

We caught up with Umhlanga-based

lifestyle coach Rabesh Sukrajh to chat

about his book, The Automated Personal

Assistant.

What inspired you to write the book?

I've experienced first-hand how easy it is to get

overwhelmed by work, responsibilities, and digital

distractions. I wanted to show how automation can reduce

stress rather than add to it. My goal is to help people

simplify their lives, work smarter, and feel better so they can

focus on what truly matters.

Text: Jennifer Campbell

How has your experience shaped your

views on well-being in the digital age?

Like many, I've felt the pressure of always being "on."

Technology has made life easier in some ways, but it’s

also created constant notifications, endless to-do lists,

and the expectation to be available 24/7. I've learned that

mental well-being isn’t just about taking breaks - it’s about

being intentional with how we use technology. Setting

boundaries, automating repetitive tasks, and creating

space for real rest have made a huge difference in my life.

Technology should serve us, not control us.

How can automation reduce stress instead

of adding to it?

Automation can free up time by handling repetitive tasks,

reducing decision fatigue, and keeping us organised.

Instead of spending hours on emails, scheduling, or

admin work, we can use smart systems to take care of

them - giving us more time for

creativity, rest, and the things

that truly matter. At its best,

technology should help us

work smarter, reduce stress, and

support our well-being.

24 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga April 2025

How does automation

help prevent burnout?

Burnout happens when

we’re constantly busy but

not necessarily productive.

The problem is not having

a clear plan or goal that needs to be achieved and spending

too much time on small, repetitive tasks while struggling to

find time for deep work and rest.

How Do you REDUCE unnecessary workload?

Simple automations like scheduling tools, reminders, and

organising systems handle the small tasks so we can focus

on what truly matters. When we remove mental clutter and

plan better, we think more clearly, work more efficiently, and

feel less stressed.

But tech alone isn’t enough. We need healthy boundaries

- setting clear work hours, turning off unnecessary

notifications, and making space for real breaks. Instead of

always being "on," we can use technology to support better

habits, like time-blocking for focused work and making sure

we don’t spend the entire day glued to a screen.

What daily habits do you swear by?

Small, consistent habits make the biggest difference.

* Morning routine - I start my day with deep breathing,

movement, and hydration. This sets a positive tone for the

rest of the day. I prepare juices and salads to help keep my

energy levels up throughout the day.

* Nutrition boost - I add a high-quality green powder to my

diet to support my energy and digestion.

* Breaks and movement - I take short breaks throughout the

day, whether it’s a quick stretch or a walk. It clears my mind

and improves focus.

* Evening wind-down - I play soft piano music before bed to

relax and avoid screens at least an hour before sleeping.

2025 EYEWEAR TRENDS:

BOLD, UNIQUE AND

UNAPOLOGETICALLY YOU

30 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga April 2025

Eyewear in 2025 is about more than vision – it’s a statement of confidence,

individuality and self-expression. We spoke to René van den Heever, optometrist and

owner of Kijk Optometrists in Salt Rock, about the standout trends for the year and

how to choose frames that truly bring you joy.

BOLD IS BACK

Gone are the days of neutral,

understated frames. 2025 is all about

colour – from neon and pastels to

bright colourful frames, eyewear is

a vibrant expression of personality.

Think bright blues, fiery reds or deep

emerald greens.

ROUND FRAMES – A CLASSIC

WITH A TWIST

Round glasses continue to be a

top choice, offering a blend of

intellectual charm and vintage

appeal. Whether oversized and bold

for a statement look or sleek and

minimal for a more subtle touch,

round frames remain timeless while

feeling fresh and current.

GEOMETRIC EYE WEAR

If you want something

unconventional, geometric frames

are a must-try. Hexagonal, octagonal

and asymmetric designs challenge

traditional styles, proving that

eyewear can be both artistic and

functional. These edgy, unexpected

shapes are perfect for those who love

to push boundaries.

DOUBLE BRIDGE REVIVAL

The double-bridge frame is making

a major comeback, offering a cool

mix of vintage and contemporary

aesthetics. Double-bridge frames

generally suit a variety of face

shapes. Whether in sleek metal for a

refined look or bold acetate for extra

personality, this style brings structure,

confidence and effortless charm.

WEAR WHAT YOU LOVE

While trends can be exciting, the

most important rule is to wear what

makes you feel good. Eyewear should

reflect your personality, not just

what’s fashionable. The best choice

is always the one that feels authentic

and comfortable to you.

Forget the old “face shape rules” – if a

pair of glasses makes you feel good,

it’s the right choice for you. This year is

all about embracing what excites you,

whether it’s bold colours, unexpected

shapes or retro-inspired frames.

Strength

and style

Ballito-based entrepreneur, Mikyla Stassen,

has been passionate about fitness for as

long as she can remember. While studying

Strategic Business Management in 2022,

she launched Gym Dog Activewear. Now,

she’s just completed an exciting rebrand that

marks the beginning of a new chapter.

Text: Jennifer Campbell Photographs: Pagiel Chetty

What inspired you to start

Gym Dog Activewear?

Being active has always been a big

part of my life, and I truly believe that

living a healthy lifestyle is the key to

happiness and fulfilment. This drive

to stay active and healthy led me

to create the business. I launched

the brand while in my third year of

studies, combining my love for fitness

with my passion for business. I set out

to create activewear that not only

feels amazing but also empowers

people to tackle their fitness goals

with confidence. My mission is to

build a brand that helps others feel

strong, confident and unstoppable in

their fitness journey.

What is the story behind the

name Gym Dog?

The name was chosen to embody

the spirit of determination, loyalty,

and strength that defines both

the gym lifestyle and the bond

between a person and their fitness

journey. Just as a dog is known for its

resilience, discipline, and unwavering

36 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga April 2025

commitment,

we wanted a

name that

represented

those same

qualities in the

world of fitness.

Dogs are often seen

as symbols of loyalty, and in the

same way, our brand is committed to

standing by our customers, helping

them stay consistent, and pushing

them to achieve their goals. We’re

about embracing the grind, staying

focused, and cultivating a mindset

that no challenge is too big.

How has the Ballito community

supported your business?

As a local brand, we’ve been

fortunate to connect with

people who share our

passion for fitness and a

healthy lifestyle. Whether

it’s through word-ofmouth,

showing up at

our pop-up events,

or supporting us

on social media,

the community has really embraced

what we’re about. Their positive

feedback, loyalty and encouragement

have been invaluable in helping us

grow. We’re proud to be part of a

community that truly believes in our

mission and is always cheering us on!

How do you personally stay

motivated in fitness and business?

It is all about finding purpose and

surrounding yourself with the right

support system. In fitness, I make it

a priority to focus on consistency,

progress, and how good it feels to take

care of my body. Whether it’s hitting

new personal milestones or simply

showing up, I always remind myself of

the positive impact that movement

has on my overall well-being.

In business, my motivation comes

from seeing the confidence and

happiness our customers experience

when they train in our products. It is

incredibly fulfilling. I’m also fortunate

to have my wonderful husband by

my side. Recently,

he joined our

brand as a director,

and having him

as my partner in

this journey has

been an absolute

game-changer.

He’s been my rock

through the stressful times, and his

support makes everything we do so

much more meaningful. Together, we

make an unstoppable team, and that

synergy drives us to push boundaries

and elevate the brand.

What makes Gym Dog

Activewear different than

other activewear brands?

Gym Dog Activewear stands out

from other brands by offering an

exceptional combination of quality,

style, and affordability. Our activewear

is made with premium, durable

fabrics designed to provide comfort

and support during any workout,

while also being breathable and

flexible for everyday wear. Unlike

many high-end activewear brands,

Gym Dog keeps prices accessible to

the public without compromising

on the quality you deserve. This

balance of affordability and topnotch

performance makes us a go-to

choice for those who want reliable

activewear that won’t break the bank.

Plus, our designs are both functional

and fashionable, ensuring you feel

great both in and out of the gym.

What’s your favourite

collection piece?

It has to be the V-Leggings. I love

how they fit and shape the body,

giving a flattering, sculpted look. The

design provides a perfect balance of

comfort and support, making them

ideal for both workouts and everyday

wear. The V-shape detail adds a stylish

touch, and the leggings also have

amazing pockets, which are perfect

for keeping your phone or keys handy

during a workout or run. They’re just

a great all-around choice, and I feel

amazing whenever I wear them!

A feast in neutrals

Easter is the perfect time to enjoy good

food and great company around a

The table

Raquel, the creative force behind The Socialite,

worked her magic to craft an oh-so-chic Easter

tablescape. Playing with layers of texture and

tone, she brought Pantone’s Mocha Mousse

to life in the most stylish way. Unique candles

added an artsy flair, while soft linen tablecloths

and napkins in dreamy neutrals made the

mocha hues pop. And for the perfect finishing

touch? Glossy white eggs, fragrant cinnamon

sticks, and delicate white stocks in minimalist

vases, bringing a fresh, organic feel that tied it all

together beautifully!

The food

No gathering is complete without a decadent

spread, and the team at Chocolate Chilli Chefs

delivered an unforgettable menu of bite-sized

delights. Think crisp cream cheese spring

rolls, flavour-packed chicken bao buns, and

indulgent steak bruschetta. And, of course,

dessert! A selection of brownies – Biscoff, Oreo,

and pistachio – were the perfect addition, while

a beautifully designed mini lunchbox cake

provided a sweet finishing touch.
