Q: Your work delves into the limits of painting and its

associated language. Could you elaborate on how you

approach redefining these boundaries in your practice?

I am obsessed with limits in general. In painting, there are

also limits because we can define it, many times to define

is to limit in some way. I conceive limits as reference points

both inside and outside the canvas. I am interested in how

the pictorial image is constructed through them: they can

already be imposed by the support itself, for example, or I

can impose them on the canvas with the painting material.

Redefining limits is not easy, but one can always play with

them and question them.

Q: You mention seeking the “most tender truths” in both

painting and life through sensitivity and affection. How

do these elements manifest in your creative process and

finished works?

Everything that happens in the studio resembles many of the

simple and essential things that we do in our lives as people

in actions and thoughts. During the creation process, many

of those things happen, the important things occur. The final

result, the painting, is actually an excuse for me. Any manual

work involves direct contact with the material: there is

attention, care, delicacy, timing, waiting... When you let the

paint dry, a wait is born. When something doesn’t work, you

think about why or a solution. Lifting a very large painting is

heavy; it is an effort to do it. When I am saturated with seeing

a painting, I hide it, switch to another, or leave the studio.

There is always a dialogue with the pieces, and that is why

they become sensitive bodies that relate.

Q: Having graduated in Fine Arts from the University of

Castilla La Mancha in Cuenca, how has your academic

experience influenced your artistic development and exploration?

I arrived unexpectedly and was very lucky with my university.

Having my own workspace allowed me to develop my

practice and my pictorial research mainly. I learned a lot

from my peers and the synergies that were created around.

The environment of the city of Cuenca also had a notable

influence, especially my frequent visits to the Museum of

Spanish Abstract Art where pieces by some of my pictorial

references are exhibited.

Q: You’re interested in the dialogue between subjects,

their roles, and their temporality. How do you convey

these interactions within your paintings?

In relation to the above regarding the dialogue with the material,

the interactions with it and what happens in the studio,

honestly, I believe my intention is not always to convey it but

to use it as a starting point or theme of the work. In some

way, I tell things, but I do not impose them. I only speak

silently with the paint. The tiny is important, but many times

it is not seen.

Q: In your work, you aim to question and rethink the

historical burden of painting. What methodologies or

perspectives do you employ to challenge traditional conceptions

within the art form?

This is very much related to the limits of painting! It consists

of questioning what painting is and what is not, how far it

goes. Many times I produce pieces that are constructed with

pictorial materials but I do not use a brush. I am really interested

in looking from another perspective. There are some

established things (or methodologies) that have been built

a long time ago from pillars that are not wrong but perhaps

obsolete. I believe that painting is a practice with a timeless

character: it remains alive but evolves as we do as people

and society. Therefore, the conception of contemporary

painting cannot be the same as before.

Their films operate beyond straightforward

storytelling, relying instead on atmosphere,

mood, and an eerie, intangible quality that

activates the work at a deeply emotional and

even spiritual level. This same approach informs

my paintings, where I seek to evoke

presence, tension, and a certain sense of

the uncanny.

Secondly, many of these films serve as

a counterpoint to postmodern immediacy,

embracing slowness, intransigence, and the

passage of time as both a formal and thematic

element. They don’t just unfold over

time—they are about time. Ironically, painting

is a static medium, yet my expanded painting

practice engages with the idea of time in

multiple ways. Through motifs like circularity,

rotation, gradients, and the physical bending

of the canvas, I explore transformation—

something that can only truly exist across the

time dimension. My work attempts to visualize

that process of change, echoing the way

these filmmakers emphasize duration, presence,

and the unfolding of moments.

Q: You hold a degree in Film Directing

from ESCAC and later pursued a master’s

in painting with Turps Banana. How has

your background in film influenced your

approach to visual arts, particularly in

your abstract practice?

Film and visual arts have always been two of

my biggest passions. While they might seem

like entirely different disciplines with distinct

mediums, my gravitation toward minimalism

across artistic fields has created an unexpected

bridge between them.

My exposure to filmmaking and my deep

engagement with cinema have influenced

my approach to painting in two fundamental

ways. First, during my years at ESCAC,

I was particularly drawn to filmmakers from

the second half of the 20th century who

sought to dissolve traditional narrative structures—the

classic three-act storytelling

model—in favor of other cinematic tools.

Directors like Michelangelo Antonioni, Chris

Marker, Alain Resnais, Jean-Luc Godard, as

well as more contemporary figures like Béla

Tarr, Andrei Tarkovsky, David Lynch, and Michael

Haneke, shaped my artistic sensibility.

Q: Your technique involves manipulating

beech plywood to create convex

canvases. What inspired you to explore

this medium, and how does the physical

transformation of the canvas enhance the

thematic depth of your work?

In my work, I bend beech plywood through a

hot-pressing process to create convex canvases

that resemble the arc of an incomplete

circumference. This exploration began years

ago with my drawings, which were initially

done on paper—often using old book pages

and book covers. My primary intervention at

the time involved punching holes into them,

playing with the absence of material as much

as with the presence of marks. I was particularly

drawn to the lightness and subtle curvature

of an A4 sheet leaning against a wall.

That simple form—the gentle bending of a

page resting on the floor—stayed with me. It

eventually led me to reconsider the convention

of flat stretchers hanging parallel to the

wall, setting me on a path toward bending as

a structural and conceptual device.

Bending operates on three levels within

my practice.

First, bending plywood—a material that is

traditionally flat—is a way to crystallize my

process, making my intervention physically

evident. The final shape is unexpected and

unconventional, emphasizing the material’s

transformation rather than simply using it as

a neutral support.

Second, bending allows me to escape

the rigid conventions of traditional painting,

pushing my work into the realm of expanded

painting. It opens a door for my pieces to

exist somewhere between painting, object,

sculpture, and installation—blurring disciplinary

boundaries and embracing spatial

concerns.

Lastly, bending enables me to achieve circular

supports, reinforcing a central theme

in my practice. My minimalist paintings often

incorporate circular motifs—dots, holes, ellipses,

circumferences—but even when the

composition consists of a simple color field,

the curvature of the support itself carries that

sense of circularity.

Q: Circles and spheres are prominent in

your art, both in form and symbolism.

Could you discuss the philosophical and

aesthetic significance of these shapes in

your pieces?

Recently, I’ve come to understand that my

work is not only about form and space but

also about time. The circularity present in my

paintings is, in many ways, a visualization of

time itself.

While Western traditions often conceive

of time as linear—a continuous progression

from past to future—many cultures and

philosophies embrace cyclical or nonlinear

models. In Hindu and Buddhist cosmologies,

time is an endless cycle of creation and

dissolution. Indigenous worldviews often describe

time as a spiral, where past, present,

and future interact dynamically rather than

existing as fixed points on a line. The ancient

Mayan calendar, with its interlocking

cycles, further challenges the idea of time as

a singular, forward-moving force. Even within

Western thought, Nietzsche’s concept of

eternal recurrence suggests a world where

time loops indefinitely, repeating itself in an

infinite cycle.

Within this framework, my work becomes

a meditation on the circular nature of time.

The bending of my supports and the repetition

of circular motifs are not simply explorations

of shape and materiality; they point to

a reality where time doesn’t just advance but

folds back onto itself, loops, and re-emerges.

The holes in my paintings are not mere

voids; they are disruptions in time, absences

that assert themselves as presences. Similarly,

my floor-based panoramas challenge

the conventional way we experience historical

or narrative overviews. Rather than

presenting a linear sequence, they immerse

the viewer in a space where past and future

coexist, without a clear beginning or end.

Through these material and conceptual explorations,

my work seeks to unsettle the

conventional Western perception of time,

proposing an alternative that is fluid, recursive,

and suspended between states of becoming.

In this sense, my paintings share an

affinity with the immanent temporality of the

films I mentioned earlier—works that resist

immediacy, unfold at their own pace, and

ask us to reconsider how we perceive and

experience time itself.

Q: During your residency at LA BIBI gallery

in Mallorca, you developed a body of

work exhibited at the Far de ses Coves

Blanques. How did this experience influence

your artistic evolution, and what

themes did you explore during this period?

The residency at La BIBI Gallery was an incredibly

transformative experience for me.

The space itself—a beautifully renovated

old warehouse in Establiments, a small village

just outside Palma—provided the perfect

environment for creation. Nestled in

the countryside with breathtaking views of

the surrounding fields and the Serra de Tramuntana

mountains, the setting was nothing

short of inspiring. It’s the kind of place that

makes you slow down, pay attention, and

absorb your surroundings in a way that directly

feeds into your work.

Coming into the residency, I had meticulously

planned my approach. I arrived with

numerous sketches and studies from my

studio in Toulouse, aiming to execute a new

body of work as efficiently as possible. I was

conscious of the limited time—one month

flies by in a residency setting—and I wanted

to make the most of every moment. However,

within the first few days, something unexpected

happened. The vast, open skies

visible from the east-facing windows of the

studio completely shifted my focus. The sunrises

were spectacular, casting delicate gradients

across the sky, subtly changing by the

minute. I found myself mesmerized by these

shifts in color and light, and before I knew it,

they had begun to seep into my work.

As a result, my paintings took on a different

tone than what I had been working on

in Toulouse. I moved away from the deep,

dark block colors that had defined my recent

work and instead embraced more desaturated,

nuanced gradients that seemed to echo

the surrounding landscape. The natural light

in the studio—streaming in through its massive

windows and glass roof—amplified this

process. It was a stark contrast to my usual

routine back home, where daily responsibilities,

my job, my dog, and social commitments

often divided my focus. At La BIBI,

the semi-isolation and uninterrupted time allowed

me to explore new ideas more freely,

take risks, and push my practice further.

This period of total immersion ultimately

led to a body of work that was not only more

responsive to its environment but also more

playful and expansive in its approach. The

pieces I created during the residency—later

exhibited at Far de ses Coves Blanques—

marked a turning point in my practice, reaffirming

the importance of place, light, and

time in my artistic process.

Q: Your work delves into the tension between

form and figure, background and

surface, and positive and negative space.

How do you navigate these dualities in

your creative process, and what challenges

arise in balancing these elements?

My gravitation toward minimalism across artistic

fields has been a defining aspect of my

practice. I remember reading an interview

as a teenager with Arvo Pärt, the Estonian

composer, where he said, “I had to get rid

of everything unnecessary to save myself.”

That deeply resonated with me, and in many

ways, it encapsulates the philosophy that

underpins my work.

My current body of work is the result of an

active effort to strip away the unnecessary—

the trivial, the flashy, the gimmicky—in order

to create charged, memorable, and iconic

images using as few elements as possible.

Anne Truitt put it perfectly: “I’ve struggled

all my life to get maximum meaning in the

simplest possible form.” That journey, over

time, led me to a practice that operates with

extreme restraint. When you remove most

painterly gestures and motifs, you’re left with

what initially seems like very little—a color

field, an expanse of surface. But it’s at that

moment, when everything has been reduced

to its essence, that you begin to notice what

was always there yet previously unseen: the

negative space, the hole, the absence, the

canvas itself as an active element.

This tension between form and figure,

background and surface, presence and absence,

is at the core of my creative process.

I navigate these dualities by treating absence

not as an emptiness but as a charged

space—something that holds meaning

through its very withdrawal. Byung-Chul

Han wrote, “Beauty is not what stands out

or asserts itself, but what recedes or yields.

Beauty is not what is fixed, but what floats.

Beautiful are the things that bear traces of

nothingness, that contain within them the

marks of their own end, the things that are

not equal to themselves. Beauty is not the

duration of a state, but the fleetingness of a

transition. Beauty is not total presence, but a

here covered by an absence.”

That idea of beauty as something ephemeral,

transitional, and self-effacing is crucial

to my approach. The biggest challenge

in working with these ideas is achieving a

balance—allowing the work to be reductive

without feeling empty, minimal without being

cold, restrained without becoming rigid. The

key is in the tension itself: in knowing when to

let a form emerge and when to let it dissolve,

when to make a mark and when to leave

space for what is unspoken.
