IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN TODAY

The 1916 final, or more specifically the

celebrations that followed, spawned one

of the most bizarre incidents the Munster

Schools Senior Cup has ever seen. Jubilant

Christian Brothers College supporters

celebrating their 3-1 final victory over local

rivals Pres at the Mardyke were mistaken

by a local Daily Mail reporter as dissenting

rioters, venting their feelings by ‘waving

flags and blowing bugles, while others more

fearless…threw explosives in the shape of

Chinese crackers amongst the crowd.’

next day, eventually escalating right to the

House of Commons on the 7th of March the

following year through a complaint made by

the Lord Mayor of Cork. The following day

the paper issued a formal apology for causing

‘so much’ local indignation and illfeeling,

and that the paper made a donation

to the poor box.

The first, and probably last time a Munster

Schools match will ever be discussed at

Parliament!

A terse riposte came in the shape of a letter

which appeared in the Cork Examiner the

PRESIDENT’S

MESSAGE

Welcome to this year’s Pinergy Munster

Schools Boys Senior Cup final, marking the

114th edition here at Virgin Media Park.

We are delighted to have Pinergy as our

sponsor once again, and we extend a special

thanks to them for their continued support,

which has also extended to the Senior Girls’

Cup finals this year.

This final is set to be a thrilling encounter, with

Presentation Brothers College currently one

cup win ahead of Christian Brothers College,

adding that extra bit of spice to what is already

a highly anticipated match. It’s certainly

something to look forward to.

We would also like to extend our thanks to all

the boys and their schools who participated

in this year’s competition, especially the

emerging schools whose involvement has

greatly enriched the tournament.

A special note of appreciation goes to the

coaches, backroom staff, teachers, and the

parents and guardians— who, as always, play

the crucial role of unofficial taxi drivers.

Our gratitude also goes to the Munster Schools

Committee and James Neville for ensuring the

smooth running of this prestigious event.

A big thank you as well to the staff at both

Virgin Media Park and Thomond Park for their

cooperation and assistance in making today’s

final possible.

Enjoy the game—I’m sure we’re in for a cracker!

SCHOOLS BATTLE IT OUT

FOR GARRETT FITZGERALD CUP

In 2021/22, the Pinergy Munster Schools

Senior Cup trophy was officially named the

Garrett Fitzgerald Cup as a fitting tribute

and acknowledgement of the former CEO’s

contribution to the schools’ game in the

province.

Fitzgerald, who passed away in February

2020, was at the helm of Munster Rugby

for twenty years and prior to that held

numerous coaching roles across schools,

club, and representative sides.

As a player he won a Munster Schools

Senior Cup with CBC in 1971 and later

coached the school to a total of five Munster

Senior Cup titles guiding teams during a

highly successful period when claiming four

successive Senior Cups from 1997 to 2000.

CBC remain the only school to hold this

honour having previously achieved the feat

in the 1970s.

In November 2021, Garrett’s wife Áine

O’Donnell and daughter Megan attended

an honorary event at the school recognising

the four-in-a-row success and fittingly the

Schools Senior Cup from that period, and

the now christened Garrett Fitzgerald Cup,

were both on display.

Commenting on the cup

recognition, Áine O’Donnell

said, “Having this historic cup

named after Garrett is a lovely

tribute to what he achieved

and to remember what the schools’ game,

and the grassroots game overall, meant to

him.

“He was a huge believer in young people

and wanting them to reach their potential.

Winning this cup recognises excellence

and achieving one’s potential and having

Garrett’s name associated with it is a huge

honour.”

MATCH PREVIEW

By Eolan Allen

For the third consecutive year, Presentation

Brothers College and Christian Brothers College

will battle it out in the Pinergy Munster Schools

Boys Senior Cup final, with Pres’ aiming to

make it a hat-trick of victories against their archrivals.

This all-Cork showdown promises to

be an exhilarating contest, with both schools

boasting strong campaigns en-route to the final.

CBC started their knock-out campaign with a

quarter-final against Castletroy at Virgin Media

Park. Hooker Darragh Prenter proved to be

the star-man, with a fine all-round display that

culminated in his scoring of three tries. It was

a comprehensive 50-7 victory for the Sydney

Hill College, with the O’Callaghans; Jack and

Darragh; scoring a brace. Charlie O’Shea

scored the other try as well as kicking four of his

sides five successful conversions.

The semi-final was a closer affair, but Christians

ran out deserved 29-17 victory over Crescent

Comprehensive in Thomond Park. The game

showcased their attacking prowess, with halfback

duo Christopher Barrett and O’Shea

dictating play superbly.

Barrett set the tone with a great sniping run

off the base of a ruck to score the opening try,

with O’Shea converting. Early replacement Bill

McCarthy then made an immediate impact,

crossing for a try before halftime to give CBC

a 14-5 lead.

An O’Shea cross-field kick set up an early try for

Prenter early in the second half for a spectacular

try. Crescent attempted a comeback, but

O’Shea’s penalty and a second McCarthy try put

the result beyond doubt to secure Christian’s

place in today’s showpiece event.

Pres’ played the same pair of opponents in

the knock-out stages; starting off with a high

scoring 40-19 win over Crescent, in a game that

was a lot tighter than the scoreline suggested.

Daniel Murphy; a part of the Junior Cup squad

last year was the star performer. He scored

two tries and finished with 20 points; with his

brother Denis assisting one of those tries.

Daniel Murphy also turned creator for two of

his side’s other four tries, with Cormac Bohan,

James O’Leary, Rickey Barrett, and Bobby

O’Callaghan also touching down.

PBC booked their place in the final with a hardfought

24-10 victory over Castletroy at Virgin

Media Park. Despite struggling to find their usual

rhythm early on, three second half tries sealed

the win, highlighting the team’s resilience and

ability to perform under pressure.

The sides were level at seven points apiece

at half-time, with Alex Molony gathering a

misplaced pass before scoring and Daniel

Murphy converting. The second half saw

Pres’ shift into gear, with number eight Rian

MacFarlane O’Shea powering through for the

go-ahead try. Liam Hegarty then extended the

lead off the back of a well-executed maul before

Deckie Fitzgerald touched down at the death.
