March 2025
Happy Women’s History Month.
When girls are educated and women are allowed to choose the lives they want, society
improves, children are healthier, and everyone lives longer.
Unfortunately, America has a regime that is determined to shackle women and young girls with
babies, exclude them from the military, and even go as far as repealing their right to vote.
This month’s feature articles include an article and review of Duchess Meghan Sussex successful
lifestyle series on Netflix, admiring the fight and toughness of Representative Jasmine Crockett, and
the sharp negotiating strategy of Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. We also offer a critical
analysis of why California Governor invited noted racists Charlie Kirk and Steve Bannon to his
podcast, and the dishonorable actions of the military in firing and demoting accomplished Black
commanders.
We finish with guest contributor Brian Bullard’s second installment of his three-part series on what it
means to be a veteran and know the type of person new Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

DUCHESS
MEGHAN SUSSEX
LIVING & LOVING
THE SOFT LIFE
by Myron J. Clifton
On episode two on Meghan’s new Netflix series,
With Love, Meghan, she corrects guest Mindy
Kaling on what her name is. “You keep saying
Meghan Markle, but my married name is Meghan
Sussex.”
Meghan was correcting the world and setting the
record straight once and for all. Detractors tried
to correct her online, but she was proven correct,
again – doubting that a woman wouldn’t know
her own name is just a small taste of the attacks
Meghan continues to receive from royalists and
their media.
Her show has been renewed for another season
and is currently in the top ten in over fifty
countries. Meghan is proving again that her
appeal is global.
She has her detractors, of course, with their main
complaint being that Meghan isn’t “Relatable.”
Her detractors seem to be stuck with the
manufactured binary choices that white people in
the U.S. and elsewhere, especially but not
exclusively in England, that tell them there are
only two types of Black women: The exceptional
elite like Oprah, Beyonce, Serena Willams,
Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama, and Halle
Berry, or the Black woman pushed on the nightly
news and pop culture: brash, loud, angry,
criminal, in poverty, and with many kids out of
wedlock.
The athletes and entertainers vs. the
stereotypes.
That binary choice is of course false, and
Meghan’s show highlights something that the
Black community knows there are millions of
“Meghan’s” in our community and they are
common.
Dear Dean Magazine | Mar. 22, 2025 | Page 9
DEAR DEAN MAGAZINE
Myron J. Clifton
Black women are diverse in thoughts, careers,
intelligences, opinions, and living situations.
Some are rural and others are in cities. Some
are in the country. There’s a diversity of thought
on how and who to love, religion, genders, and
education. We understand that in our
community.
As an aside, it is worth always remembering that
Black women as a voting block were in synch
with voting for VP Kamala Harris for president –
92% voted for her. So, none of America’s current
mess can be blamed on them.
But for the people who are saying Meghan isn’t
relatable it is telling me they are stuck in those
binary choices for Black and Latino women.
They aren’t considering that there are millions of
Black and Latino women who are hosts,
entertain guests, have large friendship groups,
who are creative, wonderful cooks, and they
travel together and have their own
organizations. They have clubs such as STEM,
book clubs, gardening clubs, or just friends of
women who get together for brunch, shopping
excursions, vacations, or to just talk.
These women are our mothers, sisters, wives,
lovers, aunts, friends, and partners.
We know they exists. And to them seeing
Meghan doing things that they do but which
aren’t often represented in media, movies,
television, or popular books. But there’s a
reason why her show is popular across the
globe, especially with Black women who do see
themselves in Meghan.
Those Black women are all over social media
sharing their own “Soft life” that mirrors much
of what Meghan covers in her show’s eight
episodes. They are gardening and making floral
arrangements, showing their creativity with
crudité and charcuterie boards, doing things
with their hands, and of course cooking.
They are just being creative and living and
enjoying their lives as they see fit. I think they
should be celebrated, not scorned or criticized
like some are doing to Meghan. I see my
mother, my wife, my wife’s mother and aunts,
and it is truly a pleasure watching Meghan in
her element.
I see them in what Meghan is doing and so it is
not unusual what she is doing. It is just unusual
to people who are only used to the binary
choice that mass media presents them for Black
women: Either your Oprah or Serena or
Beyonce, or you are the worst and lowest citizen
in your country.
It is telling on them that they are in a bubble
that excludes Black and Latino women who are
not those stereotypes. The critics should read
books by Black and Latino women and expand
their circles to include Black and Latino women.
They will improve their lives if they do so.

Sometimes, when you’re at a crossroads, a door will open and what enters will inspire you.
Other times, what enters will make you gag. These stories by a ride-share short-timer might
have the same effect on you. A man, recently laid off from his job and intrigued by the
people he might meet (and the money he might make) decides to drive ride-share while
looking for a new professional management position.
Don’t want to drive drunk? Well, then, by all means, plug in your location and get your
friendly neighborhood ride-share driver to ferry you to your next bar. Need to move but
can’t afford movers? There’s an App for that! Tired of waiting for tricks on the corner? Wait
—I’ve got an idea. . .
The behavior and stories of folks who call on ride-share turned into a unique
anthropological study for one man who decided to drive ride-share while looking for a new
professional management position. Recently laid off from his job and intrigued by the
people he might meet (and the money he might make), the author unwittingly became the
anonymous confidant for men, women, nonbinary people, and children. Unfortunately for
him, he also became the innocent target of people who couldn’t hold their liquor, others
who couldn’t hold their temper, and at least one who couldn’t keep his hands to himself.
Little did they know they were in the Prius of a writer, who would be able to look in the rear
view and tell their stories.
This collection of anecdotes is non-judgmental, full of irony and dry humor, and may help
someone else decide: Is driving ride-share for you?

THE BRILLIANCE OF
PRESIDENT CLAUDIA
SHEINBAUM
Mexico’s president chose a different path to dealing
with U.S. president Donald Trump.
She punched him in his fat mouth.
I don’t mean that literally, unfortunately because he
certainly has long deserved it after decades of
insulting everyone in every demographic.
No, what Claudia has done is speak truth to his face,
correct his lies and accusations in real time, and
been firm on what she will do in response to his tariff
threats and provocations.
She reminded him – and dumb Americans – that
Mexico is the U.S. biggest trade partner, that millions
of Americans live in Mexico, that she has the power
to cause major harm to the American economy in
almost every state.
But then the president went further, higher, faster
when she pointedly reminded Trump and Americans
that Mexico only has one gun store – ONE – and that
99% of the guns and weapons in Mexico that are
used by the Cartels that American media report on
and movies love to show – and supplied illegally by
U.S. gun manufacturers.
more to help reduce the flow of illegal drugs
across the southern border, it is American
citizens who are requesting, using, selling, and
profiting from the drugs. Basically, stop
worrying about us and get your own house in
order, Americans.
Excellente, President Sheinbaum.
And she ended with a reminder that while Mexico
continues to do what it can and pledges to do

REPRESENTATIVE
JASMINE CROCKETT
The Voice and Energy
Democrats Need
Representative Jasmine Crockett has emerged as a
needed democratic voice to counteract the bloviating
president and his cadre of loudmouth sycophants in
the House like Marge Taylor-Green, Lauren Boebert.
Rep. Crockett is smart, sharp, and unafraid to, as
former VP Kamala Harris says, “Call a thing a thing.”
She has emerged from the election as the go-to
politician to comment and make sense of devious
actions undertaken by Elon Musk and other
republicans.
She has spoken out about cutting federal jobs, going
after Social Security and Medicare, while also
confronting her republican coworkers in the House
about their capitulation to Elon and Trump. She has
been furious at republicans for giving up their
oversight of spending and budgets, and of Trump
officials refusing to testify before Congress.
There are calls for Rep Crockett to move up within the
party and some are even eyeing her as part of a future
presidential ticket.
Whatever Rep Crockett does, she will excel and she will
remain who she is: Smart, honest, sharp, and a
staunch defender of democracy and the democratic
party.

DRAFT DODGER
DISHONORS MILITARY
by Myron J. Clifton
You know who are most shocked by the Elon and
Trump purge of federal employees and benefits?
Military folk. Active and retired. And military who
are Black.
Most Black military officers I’ve met, including
family, proudly serve (d) and love talking about
how military life is different than civilian.
And how while acknowledging racism, many truly
feel meritocracy of rank outpaces civilian civil
rights achievements improving Black lives.
They aren’t saying there’s no racism or delayed
advancement, just that there’s less artificial
blockage than in civilian life.
They are proud of the distinction because the
culture of saving lives under fire erases color and
class.
They are not naive and understand the history of
military racism.
Now they see 3 and 4-star generals and officers
of distinction who are Black are under attack by
Pete Hegseth - a man with no military distinction
who is also an alcoholic, Trump; a draft dodger
coward, and Elon a pansy who uses children as a
bullet shield.
Those three are snipers whose targets are
distinguished Black military veterans.
We know why they targeted Black officers
because Trump and Hegseth told us: “Eliminate
anyone who will block Trump and or not carry
out his orders.”
For all the other obvious ominous considerations
of that statement I think there’s something
hidden in there.
Dear Dean Magazine | Mar. 22, 2025 | Page 20
DEAR DEAN MAGAZINE
Myron J. Clifton
They expect white officers to comply.
They expect white officers and rank, and file will
follow heretofore unconstitutional orders because
those orders will almost exclusively come from whites
in the chain of command.
It is a stunning admission: white officers will show
fealty to Trump and not the constitution; Black
officers will not.
Their actions highlight:
They know they’re wrong
They know Black officers won’t comply
They know white officers will comply
They know they must get rid of Black officers, so
the military command doesn’t collapse
Of course, that logic is flawed because not all white
officers will abandon their oath. But logic isn’t
Trump, Elon, or Hegseth’s strong attributes.
But it doesn’t have to be when your goal is to destroy
the U.S. military, economy, and federal government
piece by piece for white supremacy and Russian
President Putin.
While simultaneously starting wars against Mexico
and Canada, and aiding Russia against Nato
members.
I’m not military expert or foreign relations expert. But
there are signs worth understanding.
And to me their steps to purge Black leadership is
another canary in the coal mine worth listening to.

FROM MILITARY
MAVERICK TO MAGA –
A SOLDIER’S STORY
by Brian Burke
Part 2 in 3 part series
In my last article I described military
"mavericks" and said Hegseth was a "ticking
time bomb". He wants to be "one of the boys" --
the "warfighters" as he calls them, the mythical
maverick.
Writing the story, I was reminded of the most
prolific maverick I'd ever served with, let's call
him "Kent" for privacy purposes.
Arriving at my first "permanent party", out of
Army Basic Training and Advanced Individual
Training in the mid 1980's, Private First Class
Kent stood six foot three with big square fists, a
cordial demeanor, looking like a young, blonde
Sean Connery. He was a member of my squad
and protocol is that each team member is
welcoming to new soldiers and will show them
the ropes.
When I met Kent, he was mopping floors nightly
as part of his "extra duty" for getting a DUI in
his old Ford Mustang, still parked on the lot.
The introduction was uncomfortable for us
both -- he was obviously a bit embarrassed
about his punishment yet wanting to take a
positive, welcoming leadership role. I was new
there and wondering if that would be the norm
and a bit worried about the culture.
I didn't want to be doing "extra duty."
Over a short amount of time I was welcomed
and inducted -- Kent and I became roommates, I
attended the introductory briefing with our
commander, "Captain G," and Kent and the
squad trained me on what was expected of a
soldier in our team.
But there was also a dark side to the story -- off
duty hours, on-post, in garrison.
It didn't take long before I found out there were
a few real mavericks in our squad, and they had
a history. My boss, Staff Sergeant Thomas (name
changed), had a home in military housing, onpost,
and hosted regular parties -- he and Kent
were best friends. He was also a giant, friendly
guy with a wife and three kids who had served
several years in Germany. He had drinking,
marital, and financial issues, but he was loyal,
Dear Dean Magazine | Mar. 22, 2025 | Page 24
DEAR DEAN MAGAZINE
Brian Burke
just like Kent, and when a bar fight broke out
one night I was glad they were both on my side.
We were, however flawed, a tight-knit family --
and not political, you really didn't have that
divide back then, at least among a bunch of Gen
X and Boomer soldiers in the Reagan era.
Kent was my role model on-duty -- mission
oriented and strong as an ox, he never gave up
and wouldn't let you either. He'd carry all 23
pounds of an M-60 machine gun like a loaf of
bread, and he shared whatever he had with
anyone who needed it. Everyone in our unit liked
him, and as in most Army outfits, we were very
multicultural -- everybody was "cool" with Kent.
But he had his demons, as most mavericks do --
in high school Kent crashed a car which killed
his best friend, and he would have sudden
outbursts about it when drinking heavily. Late
one night he threw several empty beer bottles
against the cement-blocked walls of our indoor
common area in a drunken fit of rage. Kent
always had weed, which was a real danger in
the advent of "gas chromatography urinalysis",
a newly refined method of identifying drug
users. One day he moved out of our room in the
barracks to live full-time at SSG Thomas' house,
where they would party every night.
I was on leave once and when I returned, he was
gone -- discharged for failing a "piss test" as we
called it. It was like losing the brother I never
had. The good thing was Captain G had given
him an honorable discharge; I felt that
recognized the great things Kent brought to the
unit despite his unruliness in garrison.
Fast forward thirty years later. I searched for
Kent online a few times every year since 1998 --
nothing.
I finally tracked him down from an online photo in
early 2016, just months before I was headed to his
area to open a client's art studio. We caught up in
email and agreed to meet.
On the flight out I sat next to a nice elderly
woman, she and her husband manufactured
commercial kitchen tools. We conversed without
taking sides, she said, "We'll see what he can do"
and I just nodded, knowing she was voting for
Trump.
I met Kent and his son at a cozy restaurant where
he did the heating and air conditioning for the
whole chain. After being honorably discharged he
attended HVAC school and went on to create his
own business, then the restaurant franchise asked
him to be their exclusive provider throughout the
state. He was doing very well, as was I, both of us
now independent and owning successful
businesses. That would've been an unimaginable
dream back in our Army days.
We talked about the past, those we served with,
and incidents. In past years he'd been through a
bad divorce, harsh custody battle, and was a
recent victim of a T-bone auto accident. We didn't
touch on politics or the upcoming 2016 election.
We were brothers, reunited like old times.
Kent was the same as I had always known --
friendly, non-judgmental, dedicated to whatever
mission at hand, a bit rogue when it came to the
rules of life, not easily influenced. He was more
laid back as well. But somehow, I still knew he'd
be MAGA. Fortunately, that never came up when I
was there. There were slight nuances but nothing
alarming, it's kind of like we both knew what exact
boundaries to hold.
When I brought up a current event he said,
Dear Dean Magazine | Mar. 22, 2025 | Page 25
DEAR DEAN MAGAZINE
Brian Burke
"I must live in a cave," making clear he didn't
keep up with the news.
We kept in touch after that and promised to
meet again. I live only an hour from where Kent
and I served in Georgia and he wanted to come
over and visit, we had big plans.
Then, later that year, 2016, Trump won, and we
had never discussed politics, but I posted
something negative about Trump on Facebook
and his son commented and blocked me. Things
got quiet after that. And family is family, I get it,
Kent isn't going to side with me over his son's
opinions, fine.
I last emailed with Kent in November 2021, after
Joe Biden became president, but we didn't
mention that either, it was just another cordial
exchange of emails about our lives. He said that
the restaurant chain was closing but he had a
new gig doing the HVAC and other electrical
repairs at a major university, one that relies on a
lot of student visas. I was the last to respond and
all commo ended.
Trump and Hegseth claim to unite but are the
great dividers. They're aware that people like
Kent don't follow the news but are susceptible to
propaganda however it reaches them, guessing
that's through social media and word of mouth.
Recently we've seen the Trump administration
ally with Russia against Ukraine, fire several
veterans from federal jobs, and make aggressive
moves towards the VA and Pentagon. Years ago,
this would have been an absolute red line in the
sand for anyone serving or for vets, especially
"mavericks."
I don't know if that will be enough to change
Kent's point of view, whatever that is, but I can
imagine he'd reconsider if his job at the
university has issues because of student visas or
funding.
One by one, people, and even other countries,
are "finding out." The sooner, the better.

GAVIN NEWSOM
AND THE WHITE
SUPREMACIST
by Myron J. Clifton
I was trying to figure out why Gavin pissed me off
so much when he started his podcast career
talking with his first guest, Charlie Kirk. Charlie is a
known white supremacist, racist, virulent
misogynist, and vile homophobic provocateur.
There are plenty of reasons to be disgusted of him
playing footsie with Charlie Kirk and using his son
as an excuse to do so - That’s slimy and
diabolically calculated by Newsom.
I think I landed on white men granting grace to the
worst white men. We see it all the time and there’s
no better example than them doing it with Trump.
But he’s just current and they can justify it because
he’s president.
But… white men like Gavin- Democrats- will
always chuckle it up with the worst Gop and do
so with zero bad feelings.
And what gets me is they are so quick to excuse,
deflect, defend, have a beer and laugh with likes
of Charlie Kirk.
But when you ask them to use their access to
the group that overwhelmingly votes to harm -
everyone else- if they do, they do like Gavin did
and chuckle it up in the worst way possible.
Throw away good vibes with valued constituents
in the big tent.
But they do it with celebrities, athletes, and their
Maga friends, family, coworkers. They excuse them
overdosing on Fox News. They excuse farmers for
hurting themselves voting Gop, and excuse CEOs,
Hollywood actors, directors, studio heads who
abuse.
Side note-this is also patriarchal in that men
excuse men, period.

misogynistic, white supremacist who outsmarted
and outclassed his father.
They are quick to blot out colors of the rainbow ?
coalition, ignore the disgraceful racism, women’s
rights, and more.
Gavin and white men like him long to be accepted
by their peers in the other party. You see the new
dem leadership pinning and begging the party to
“PLEASE FOCUS ON LONELY YOUNG WHITE MEN
AND RURAL MEN that Kamala didn’t talk to?
But when you remind them that VP Harris helped
farmers and rural voters, and had more plans to
help them, white male democratic leadership said
“She spoke too intelligently and left coast elitist”
I’ve voted for Gavin 3 times-yes 3, because he
was recalled once.
I’m glad he can’t run for Governor again and that
even if he runs for president, he won’t have my
vote.
He can go slurp those GOP votes to help him
since that’s who he’s infatuated with.
Hopefully the rest of the democratic voters will
reject his brand of sleazy politics as we get closer
to 2028.
My god, do they hear themselves?
Some said: “But Pete goes on Fox News and talks to
them.”
Yes, he does. And he’s good at it. So why didn’t
Gavin do that? Why platform Charlie Kirk? What is
gained?
Nothing with the party and very little if anything

Life is hard enough - storing, sharing and playing your
music should be easy! We believe that the world is a
better place when people who make and share music
don’t have to worry about the challenges of technology
and can instead focus on their craft and new
connections.
Meet the Founder, Kevin Linney
My name is Kevin Linney, I also go by the name Crucial
Point. I have tons of friends that make music and we all
have the same issues regarding storage and sharing
our music. As an underground/independent Hip Hop
artist, I wanted to create a platform where we could
store and easily share our music with people around
the world.
Dear Dean Magazine | Mar. 22, 2025 | Page 37
Even as an amateur artist, I had close to 200 song files
sitting on Google Drive and DropBox, none of which
were being promoted or heard by anybody other than
myself. I needed a place where I could simply store my
song files and easily share them when I want and with
who I want.
I created the sayeYO app with music artists in mind. I
added features like the discover page, where artists can
share songs made public with other app users. In the
discover page users can play songs, like songs and click
on any shared links. Our in-app text messaging allows
users to share full-length songs, media files and much
more for improved communication and collaboration.
I also added a business directory so that sayeYO app
users can connect with people who offer services within
the music industry. Some of the categories include DJ’s,
record labels, mixing and mastering, music blogs/news,
podcast, marketing and promotions, management and
consulting, dancers and choreographers, plus much
much more.
The sayeYO app is truly one of a kind. It is not your
typical cloud storage app. I know there are millions of
song files sitting on various storage drives around the
world that have not been listened to in months or years.
I know from personal experience with my music that it
is easy for artists to create songs and not ever put them
out or promote them.
I want music artists to think differently about music and
audio storage. Songs don’t have to be stored and
forgotten about. Music artists can upload all their songs
to the sayeYO app and have a place to privately store
their music or share their music publicly with a global
audience.
Don't let your music files get lost in storage. Join
sayeYO and invite your music friends!

Speaking of Elon Musk, his Tesla cars and
showrooms are being burned down, vandalized,
and protested. It got so bad Elon and Trump did
a car commercial outside the white house, in a
scene that is being mocked online. In fairness to
people who bought Tesla’s before knowing Musk
is a white nationalist, they don’t deserve their
cars to be vandalized. As for his showrooms and
that truck? Have at it…

Trump ordered the destruction of the Black

unsurprisingly, Black people didn’t respond to

Monuments to the US War between the States romanticized the notion of the
Confederacy. While these monuments came down in the twenty-first century, it did not
signal the end to the romantic ideas people held about the war, nor the existence of
white supremacy. In the near future, Civil War reenactment events are still held, and,
other than fist fights and drunken brawls, have been mostly violence-free.Until
now. When Jenn’s employer is granted a contract at the country’s largest Civil War
reenactment, she and the other managers, Paul, Jack, Mari, and Clarence, have to make
some tough calls. Across the country, the event’s promoter and his main sponsor, a
popular evangelical preacher, make plans for an event no one will soon forget. Thrown
together, along with unlikely girlfriends, a doting congregant, and an unstable redneck,
the characters are in for a deadly day of monumental terror.

Prime: Reacher. Season1-3. If you like a renegade exmilitary
former op who is 6’3 and all muscle, and who
goes around avenging and beating up crooks and
criminals, this show is for you. There is some mystery
and a little bit of humor but mostly it is a detective
procedural, and it is worth a watch.
Netflix - Running Point. If you like Ted Lasso, you will
enjoy this Basketball version set in Los Angeles with the
fictional team The Waves. After the president of the
team enters rehab, he assigns his younger sister to run
the team. She is placed in charge ahead of her older
brothers who already have executive roles with the
team, and once that happens the family rivalries
resurface and wreak havoc on the players, sponsors,
cheerleaders, and the board of directors. It is funny,
fast, silly, and an easy watch. It is 8 quick episodes, and
it has been renewed for a second season.
Apple+ Prime Target. A math whiz is on the cusp of a
mathematical discovery that could upend cryptology
and digital security – causing world-wide chaos. But
because of his pending discovery multiple shadowy
figures want to stop him just as he finds out that there
is significantly more to his discovery. The series is fast,
well written, and filled with globetrotting protagonists
racing against time in multiple ways.
Netflix: Pantheon. Season 2. This smart science
fiction animated series is one of the best and most
creatively written science fiction shows on any
streaming service. It will challenge your idea of
computers, AI, digital life extension, and more. Just
dive into season 1 and enjoy the journey.
Disney/Hulu: Paradise. The thriller series of the
year. With eight crisp episodes, a great protagonist
and antagonist, you will want to watch it closely
from episode one to the finish. What you think will
be wrong and that is okay because the writing and
direction are satisfying as any show ever. Join the
fun and prepare to talk with fellow viewers about
theories and plots!
CBS/Paramount+: Beyond the Gates. The first new
soap opera on network TV that features a mostly
Black cast – but also Latino and Asian, hit the
airwaves and is making waves. It has all the
goodness that keeps soap opera lovers watching
every day. Twisted plots, villains, liars, cheats,
double-crosses, secret kids, crooked cops, noble
doctors, and plenty of gossiping messy people.
Netflix: Zero Day. Limited Series. This political
thriller starring Robert Dinero and Angela Bassett as
former president and new president, respectively,
envisions a near future when the country is the
victim of a sinister attack that may be a cyber-attack
or something even worse. Was it a terrorist attack or
an attack by a covert government group? Was it the
Russians or Chinese? There are many questions,
plots, and subplots that will keep you guessing and
have you questioning the power of technology,
media, and government’s ability to control the
masses.
