Book club

Terrific books to read over the long weekend this Easter.

Jojo Moyes’ We All Live Here is just a

glorious, funny, delight, from start to

finish. Lila wrote a best-selling book

about keeping your marriage alive ...

before discovering her husband was

having an affair (and now a baby)

with a mum at the local school. She’s

now broke, left with two challenging,

wayward daughters, an elderly

step dad who’s moved in, and her

estranged father who’s arrived on the

doorstep looking for a place to stay.

On the plus side, there’s a couple of

hot men lurking ... jolly helpful since

she’s got to finish her new book and

the publishers are looking for hot

and sexy single mum adventures ... ‘a

literary push-up bra’ is how they put it.

Hysterical. Warm and wise too ... since

she finds out that even a person you

thought you could never forgive, may

just have something to teach you

... about love, friendship, and family.

club reads, visit exclusivebooks.co.za

Oh we do love a Gregg Hurwitz

thriller. Orphan X - Evan Smoak, former

government black ops assassin, is

known to be the man who’ll be there

for you in your darkest hour. And he’ll

rain hell and thunder on those who

caused you pain. But betray him,

as Evan’s long-time gunsmith and

armourer has just done ... and it’s war.

Nemesis - a roller-coaster of thrills.

This month we’re serving port-style

cocktails at our book club. For a

Porto Urbano, mix equal parts chilled

De Krans Premium Cape Ruby and

cranberry juice with a dash of lime

crushed ice, garnished with orange

peel and a maraschino cherry. Even

easier - and perfect if the weather’s

warm - a Pink Soda. Pour a tot of

The sky’s the limit

Compiled by: ALANICKA LOTRIET.

While most teens were stressing over their matric farewell outfits, Nelri Duvenage was

busy navigating the skies. Literally. Studying for her PPL exams.

But her journey to the cockpit didn’t come easy. Between balancing her matric year,

battling the most challenging PPL subject (Navigation, which she tackled during

prelims), and racing against tight deadlines (she had to complete seven out of eight

exams within 18 months or risk rewriting them all), Nelri had her work cut out for her.

Add in a training delay due to an aircraft conversion - switching from the Ibis GS700

Magic to the Cessna 152 - and you’ve got a recipe for resilience. Anyone in aviation

will tell you that’s no small feat!

For Nelri, flying is pure freedom. That effortless feeling of gliding through the sky, fully in

control, is what makes it all worthwhile. And right now, she’s building up her solo hours,

proving to herself (and the world) that she’s got what it takes.

But as any pilot will tell you, the weather can be a real wild card. Especially at

Krugersdorp’s Jack Taylor Airfield. ‘The elevation valley and downward slopes

mean frequent crosswinds and gusty conditions, making takeoffs and landings

extra challenging’.

And speaking of landings ... Nelri entered the 2023 Spot Landing Competition just for fun

(to sharpen her landing skills) but ended up winning the Student Class. Not one to back

down from a challenge, she entered again last year. And won again. Proof that flying has

basically become like second nature to her.

One of her fave moments so far has to be flying with a friend to Lanseria in a Cherokee

6 for the Young Eagles Event, where she and other pilots took aspiring aviators for short

flights around the aerodrome. Not only was it her first time flying and landing at Lanseria

Airport, but she also got to witness massive Boeings up close. Today, as a member of the

Young Aviators of South Africa, she’s proud to be part of inspiring the next generation of

pilots. Oh, and she also got to meet Scully Levin (one of South Africa’s top pilots).

Many assume she’s too young to be a pilot, when in fact, you can start flying at 16. And

no, it’s not just about hopping into a plane. There are intense exams with high pass rates

that most people don’t realise.

‘Bottom line … never let your wings be clipped. The road is long and hard, but it’s so

worth it. And girls ... don’t let your gender limit your dreams.’

Nelri once flew in a Harvard with a pilot who took her through barrel rolls. Not exactly

your average Sunday drive.

While most 18-year-olds are figuring out their next steps, Nelri already has a big dream

… becoming a captain at FlySafair and joining the small but growing number of female

captains in the world. Her ultimate goal ... flying the B737-800.

When she’s not flying, she might be showjumping with her horse, Bounty Hunter. The

duo trains weekly and made it to the 2024 Gauteng West SANESA A-Team in the 80cm

Working Hunter class. Her record jump ... a solid 1.20m.

‘It’s incredible to team up with an animal to do something we both love. That feeling

of freedom, whether it’s soaring over jumps or galloping with the wind in my ears, is

just magic.’

At home, she’s the same calm, diligent, and down-to-earth pilot you’ll see in the airfield.

What you see is what you get. She’s also creative, artistic, and a pretty good singer. But

want to make her day? Surprise her with a sunrise or sunset flight.

Nelri’s journey is proof that dreams don’t just stay dreams if you’re willing to chase them.

She’s tackled challenges head-on, pushed past every obstacle, and soared (literally)

beyond expectations.

Sound. Sleep. Repeat.

Flippie van Vuuren is marching to the beat of his own drum …

literally. Better known as Reese, this 17-year-old EDM producer

and sound engineer is making waves, with his music soaring

towards half a million YouTube views.

Compiled by: ALANICKA LOTRIET.

14 Get It Magazine April 2025

usic runs in Flippie van Vuuren’s veins. His late grandfather (also Flippie van

Vuuren) was a boeremusiek legend and earned a spot in the Guinness World

Records for playing a whopping 78 instruments (yip, you read that right. Seventyeight!).

Even though his granddad passed away when he was young, Reese still feels

deeply connected to him through music. ‘I always wonder how far I’d be if I had

his guidance. Even though he’s not here anymore, my goal is to honour him and

make him proud.’

In fact, musical talent runs deep in the family. His dad was a DJ back in the

day, and his cousin André has also been big in the music scene. So, it was only

natural that Reese would eventually find his own groove.

‘I’ve always loved listening to music, but never really thought about making

it. Until my cousin introduced me to the world of music production. And

that’s when the obsession began.’

Fast forward a few years, and now you’ll find him glued to his laptop every afternoon after

school, counting beats, layering sounds, and engineering tracks that are completely his

own. EDM is his playground, and he experiments with deep house, house, drum and bass,

and more. ‘EDM is such a broad genre with so many styles. I love mixing things up.’

But, as a self-taught sound engineer, it didn’t come easy. After getting his hands on

professional software, he turned to YouTube tutorials, trial and error, and a whole lot of

patience to master the craft.

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, he also dabbles in guitar, piano, and drums. Which basically

makes rhythm second nature to Flippie.

By the time he finishes school next year, he plans to help his cousin in his IT business while

working towards his ultimate goal … doing music full-time. (And he’s already got some

major milestones under his belt.

He’s created more than 5 000 songs, and his remix of Where Are You Now by Lost Frequencies

has racked up around 450 000 views on YouTube. Meanwhile, his original track Running Out

of Time has hit 13 000 streams on Spotify - and counting. And he’s got fans from all around

the world … Australia, Denmark, Switzerland, Columbia, Miami - you name it, there’s a fan

there.

While Reese draws inspiration from his grandad, when it comes to producers, he looks up to

Calvin Harris, David Guetta, and local artist Sam Mkhize. ‘Sam’s music has inspired me a lot.

He’s not a massive mainstream name, but he’s successful enough to do music full-time. And

well, that’s the dream.’ In fact, Reese recently remixed one of Sam’s songs and sent it to him,

only for Sam to love it so much, he played it at his live shows.

When he’s not producing, Reese is out DJing at events because, as he puts it, ‘If you want to

make it in music, you’ve got to put yourself out there.’

One of the biggest misconceptions, he admits, is that people think he just plays music.

‘Being a producer means I physically make the instrumentals from scratch. It takes hours -

even days - to get one song right. It’s not just pressing buttons. And most of the time, it just

comes to me. I’ll be at school, and an idea for a song will just pop up out of nowhere. Then I

will get home and put it together.’

With that said, it comes as no surprise that he barely sleeps. A typical night? Laptop on,

music mode activated, a bit of homework (maybe), then back to music until the early hours.

The hardest part of his journey though, has to be marketing and really getting his music out

there. ‘I know my music is good. If I could just reach more people, I know they’d love it.’

But no matter the challenges, music is his escape, his therapy, his everything. ‘Music has

gotten me through happy times, sad times, even times when I felt angry at the world.

There’s always music playing in this house. It’s too deep and personal to even put into

words.’

For now, Reese is balancing school, music, and the occasional gaming session with his Jack

Russell, Tekkies. But long term, he’s aiming for bigger audiences, bigger stages, and a future

where music is his full-time reality.

His life motto is If I’m not going to do it, who is? And with that attitude, we’re pretty sure he’s

going to go far.

Text: ALANICKA LOTRIET. Image: JANINE PRETORIUS.

Fascinated by the complexities of the human mind,

18-year-old Diara Choudree chose to study Psychology,

eager to understand what drives people and how she

could help them unlock their full potential.

And, as her passion deepened, she set her sights on

Industrial Psychology (where psychology meets business)

allowing her to combine her love for people with her

sharp business acumen. And because ambition runs

through her veins, she also envisions launching her own

business one day.

But, it’s not just her future plans that bring her joy … she

also loves the spotlight. At just 11 years old, she starred in

her first international commercial, a Sargento Cheese ad

that aired in Canada but was filmed right here in South

Africa. Not long after, she landed another for Gaviscon,

which made its way to screens in the Middle East.

‘That brief moment

in front of the camera

sparked something

in me. A love for the

spotlight, a thirst for

adventure, and a dream

of seeing the world.’

Fast forward to today,

and she’s gracing much

bigger stages. One of

them was where she

was crowned Miss Teen

World. A title she holds

with immense pride and

gratitude. But she’s not

stopping there. With

aspirations of competing

in Miss South Africa

one day, she’s ready to

take on new challenges,

knowing that each step

she takes is one step

closer to her dreams.

A heart

for change

From the moment she could dream,

Diara Choudree knew she wanted to

make a difference. Today, she’s heading

down a path that combines psychology,

business, and a deep-rooted desire to

empower others.

Beyond the glitz,

glamour and psychology

Diara’s heart lies in empowering young people. Especially

teenagers navigating the tricky path of self-discovery.

‘I want to be an inspiration and create awareness for

youngsters that it does not matter how or where you

start, but it’s the courage to keep striving for more. I

want to remind them that they don’t have to try and be

someone they’re not. No one can do you better than

you. And I am particularly passionate about young teens

because this is an important stage in their lives where

they are figuring out who they are and who they want

to become.’

Through workshops, mentoring, and community service,

she’s dedicated to helping the next generation find their

purpose, embrace their uniqueness, and chase their

dreams without fear.

She’s also actively involved in Service in Motion, a

Christian non-profit dedicated to uplifting communities

in need. From distributing food parcels in local parks to

providing clothing, toiletries, and joy-filled activities for

children in orphanages, Diara is committed to spreading

kindness wherever she can.

And if that wasn’t enough, she also launched Blessing

Bags, an initiative designed to offer tangible help to

those in need. Instead of handing out money (which

can sometimes be misused) Diara’s Blessing Bags

provide essential items like non-perishable snacks,

bottled water, hygiene products, and warm clothing.

Whether distributed personally, through churches, or at

shelters, these little bags of hope remind people that

someone cares.

Despite her packed schedule, she always makes time for

the things that bring her joy. She’s been dancing since

she was a child. Think contemporary, hip-hop, and all

kinds of cultural styles.

To her, dance is more

than movement. It’s an

The art of cleansing

Want clear, healthy, radiant skin? Cleanse properly.

Cleansing your skin properly is

not just about removing dirt -

sweat, excess oil, environmental

pollutants – it’s a crucial step in

maintaining a healthy, radiant

complexion. Whether after a

workout, before bed, or first

thing in the morning, proper

cleansing is the foundation

of great skincare. Vitaderm’s

Ruan Winter shares why it’s so

important, and gives the right

techniques which will keep your

skin feeling fresh, balanced,

and protected.

WHY PROPER CLEANSING

IS ESSENTIAL

Removes sweat and bacteria

after exercise - After a run or

gym session, sweat and oil

can mix with bacteria on the

skin, leading to breakouts and

irritation. Cleansing immediately

after exercise helps prevent

clogged pores and keeps your

skin refreshed.

Prevents excess oil build-up

- Hot, humid conditions can

cause the skin to produce

more sebum, leading to an oily

complexion. Using the right

cleanser helps regulate oil

production without stripping

the skin’s natural barrier.

Prepares your skin for the day

- Morning cleansing removes

overnight oil and prepares your

skin for moisturiser and SPF,

ensuring better absorption

and effectiveness throughout

the day.

Enhances overnight skin

regeneration - Cleansing before

bed is non-negotiable – it

removes makeup, pollution, and

impurities accumulated during

the day, allowing your skin to

repair itself while you sleep.

THE RIGHT WAY TO CLEAN YOUR SKIN

Choosing a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser is key. Harsh cleansers can disrupt the skin’s

barrier, leading to dryness and sensitivity. Opt for formulations that cleanse without

stripping essential moisture.

Here’s a simple cleansing routine to follow:

Use lukewarm water – Hot water can dehydrate the skin, while cold water may not

effectively remove impurities.

Apply a gentle cleanser – Avoid foaming cleansers with harsh sulphated

ingredients, as they can be too harsh on the skin. Instead, use a gentle cream or

gel-based formula.

Massage in circular motions – This boosts circulation and ensures a thorough cleanse.

Rinse thoroughly and pat dry – Never rub your skin with a towel ... patting

prevents irritation.

TOP SUMMER CLEANSING PICKS

If you’re looking for gentle yet effective cleansers, Vitaderm offers a range that caters

to different skin needs.

Pre-Cleanser – Ideal for removing sunscreen and waterproof makeup before your

main cleanse.

Cream Cleanser – A soothing option for sensitive skin, maintaining hydration while

removing impurities.

Mild Gel Cleanser – Perfect for combination and oily skin types, offering a deep clean

without over-drying

Lift your lunchbox game

One of the most meaningful changes you can make when it comes to healthier

eating is to master weekday lunchboxes for both school and work. Jade Seeliger,

a registered dietitian, emphasises the importance of using healthy ingredients

such as dairy, vegetables and fruit, keeping a focus on creating a balanced

lunchbox that includes the major food groups. She says including dairy such as

yoghurt, maas or cheese provides quality protein as well as a spectrum of micronutrients

that promote balanced eating. Buying in-season fruit and vegetables,

such as the variety of stone fruit now available in-store, helps everyone get their

recommended five to eight servings of vegetables and fruit each day. Packing your

own lunchbox can ensure a balanced lunch, while controlling portion sizes and

sticking to your monthly budget. Here are two healthy lunchbox prep recipes.

CHICKEN AND PEACH MEATBALLS

You’ll need:

800g chicken bangers; 1 clove garlic, crushed; 2 spring onions, finely chopped; 2

peaches (about 250g) washed, cored and finely chopped; 1 tsp smoked paprika;

2 tsp finely chopped parsley; 1 tsp dried oregano; 75g fresh white breadcrumbs;

salt and freshly ground black pepper; 2 large eggs; 2 Tbsp water; 125ml cake

flour; 375ml panko breadcrumbs; vegetable oil, for frying

To make:

Squeeze the chicken mince out of the sausages into a large bowl and discard

the casings. Add the garlic, spring onions, peaches, paprika, parsley, oregano and

breadcrumbs. Season well with salt and pepper. Mix well to combine.

Whisk the eggs and water together in a separate bowl to combine. Sprinkle

the flour and breadcrumbs onto two plates. Divide the chicken mixture into 20

balls. Roll each ball in the flour, then dip in the egg. Lastly roll the balls in the

breadcrumbs to coat. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Heat 1cm of oil in a frying pan. Fry the chicken balls in batches for a few minutes

per side until dark golden and cooked through. Transfer to a piece of kitchen

towel. Serve as is or with your choice of sauce.

PEACH & YOGHURT PARFAIT

You’ll need:

A ripe peach (or nectarine), diced;

½ cup plain yoghurt; 2 Tbsp low

sugar granola or muesli; a sprinkle

of cinnamon

Prepare the fruit: Wash and dice

the peach (or nectarine) into

bite-sized pieces.

Layer the parfait: In small mason jars

or containers, layer the plain yoghurt

and diced peach. Repeat layers if

using a larger jar or container.

Add toppings: Top with a sprinkle of

granola and a dash of cinnamon for

extra flavour.

Happy

days

All petals that are bright and pretty, and

plenty to keep your little ones busy as bees!

INDOOR PLANT OF THE MONTH

For happy, easy going indoor flowers to brighten up

your daughter’s bedroom, you can’t go wrong with

Chrysanthemums or garden mums. They symbolise

friendship and well-being and they come in a range

of bright colours and flower shapes. All they need is a

warm, bright room, even filtered morning sunlight for

plants to flower well. Water once or twice a week to

keep the soil moist. Feed once a month with a liquid

fertiliser and cut off the flowers as they die. Pot mums

flower for a long time and when flowering is over

they can be planted in the garden or in patio pots.

Details: lvgplant.co.za

VEGGIE OF THE MONTH

The easiest way to draw kids into the garden is to let them sow

quick germinating veggies like garden peas. Tom Thumb is

especially for them and it germinates within seven to 14 days.

These dwarf bush peas can be harvested young, so the kids

won’t lose interest. And who doesn’t love the taste of fresh green

peas straight from the pod? Tom Thumb grows beautifully in

containers and can also be tucked into small spaces, even in

the flower garden. To add to the gardening experience why not

kit out your young gardeners with brightly coloured wellies,

watering can, garden fork and small spade.

The ideal conditions for Tom Thumb peas are full sun, well

composted soil or good quality potting soil, and regular watering

so that the plants don’t dry out. Feed once a month with a

nitrogen rich liquid fertiliser. Details: rawliving.co.za

GARDEN TASKS FOR APRIL

• Time to plant out colourful winter and spring annuals like

petunias, pansies, poppies, primulas, violas and snapdragons.

• This is the last month to feed the lawn before winter. Use a lawn

fertiliser or a general fertiliser like 5:1:5 or 3:1:5.

• Keep on sowing autumn and winter veggies like carrots,

beetroot, broad beans, cabbage, leeks, lettuce, and spinach.

• Spray conifers once a month to get rid of conifer aphids.

Granules can also be sprinkled around the base of conifers.

• Water once a week and fertilise perennials, roses and shrubs.

We’re planting … Petunia Night Sky

that’s sure to intrigue the kids with its

myriad of luminous specks and dots

that glow like the Milky Way against a

dark blue night sky. There is something

so mysterious and intriguing about

the sky at night. Why not plant up a

pot and encourage youngsters to look

after their own piece of the universe?

Petunia Night Sky will fill a medium

sized pot with good drainage holes.

Use good quality potting soil and only

water when the top of the soil feels

dry. For a healthy flowering plant, feed

with a liquid fertiliser every two weeks.

Celebrate music, family, nature, community ... at Splashy Fen

Splashy Fen. It’s more than just

a music festival. Held on the

splendid Splash Fen farm in a

UNESCO World Heritage site,

and surrounded by breathtaking

scenery, it’s a celebration

of music, yes, but also of art,

nature, community, connection.

It’s where ageing rockers rub

shoulders with hip musos and

dads swing tweens up onto

their shoulders to see what’s

happening on the stage. It’s

craft markets and drumming

circles and cocktails. It’s soulful

acoustic sets and electrifying

DJ performances. It’s beers with

mates and dips in icy berg waters

and connecting with your teens.

What started as a gathering

of around 400 music fans way

back in 1990 is now one of our

most iconic festivals and it is, say

everyone who’s ever been, an

unforgettable experience.

Go for the music ...

Six stages - besides the main stage, there’s a river stage, acoustic stage,

treehouse stage, electric boma stage and fortress of funk - are curated to offer

a varied, holistic music experience. More than 300 musicians will entertain from

10am through until 1am ... names like Darren Kiely from Ireland, making his

South African festival debut, GoodLuck - dance-floor anthems and electrifying

performances from this chart-topping trio will have the crowd moving under

the stars, Ard Matthews Trio - the iconic voice of Just Jinjer returns with a

soulful acoustic twist, and Sunset Sweatshop - feel-good vibes and rock-infused

energy from this South African favourite.

and bedside lamps and plug points and a chill zone. Food wise ... there’ll

It’s in some first-time-parents-rule-book that if your new babe is going to get sick, it’s going to be in the middle of the night. It’s

can save you from those stressful late-night pharmacy runs. Panado knows that fever in babies can be scary (it’s a fever when
