Run club encourages healthy habits
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
A national non-profit organization
that introduces children to running
through events that encourage both confidence
and self-esteem is set to launch
next month in Galloway.
The inaugural Healthy Kids Running
Series — Galloway, Ohio is being organized
by Rose Lynch. The westside native
said she wanted to bring the popular running
series to the community to provide
local children with opportunities for physical
activities and social interactions.
“This program is all about coming
together, showing support for one another,
and having lots of fun,” she said.
She added that children do not even
have to like running all that much in
order to enjoy participating in the running
series.
“It would probably be helpful, but it is
not a requirement,” she said. “I think
they will have a good time regardless of
their skill level or level of interest.”
Lynch was one of those children who
never considering running to be a viable
option for her.
“My thought process at the time was
that I was too big for the sport, that I didn’t
have enough stamina, and that I
wasn’t fast enough to do it,” she said. “I
would learn that those things were
untrue, but that mindset is what kept me
away from the sport for so long.”
While attending Westland High
School, the 2010 graduate, who was
known as Rose Undeutsch at the time,
participated in track and field. She said
her specialties were more in the field portion
rather than on the track.
“I did shot put and discus, but I did

run the mile once when they needed someone to step
in,” she said.
Four years later, Lynch was a senior at The Ohio
State University, looking to join a sport that had a
strong sense of comradery. She found what she was
looking for on the track team.
“Everyone on the team was so supportive of each
other. It was amazing,” she said. “Here I was, a senior
but a newbie on the team and all of my coaches, all of
my teammates, all of the running community was just
so supportive.”
She said she became hooked on how running
improved her health, how it allowed her to slowly set
and reach goals, and how it allowed her to support
causes by participating in racing events such as charity
5Ks and the Columbus Half Marathon.
“It’s just a wonderful feeling to see people you don’t
even know cheering you on, giving you high fives, and
offering you encouragement to go on,” she said.
Although a recent back injury has prevented her
from running, Lynch has been the family
cheerleader/lead walker as her husband, Jacob, and
daughters, Emma, 6, and Ella, 3, lace up their sneakers
and hit the pavement.
She said while loves that her children have taken
an interest in running, she would like nothing more
than to see dozens of kids lacing up their sneakers and
running around in the community.
“That is part of the reason why I wanted to bring
the Healthy Kids Running Series to the area,” she
said. “Being around here all my life, I know a lot of
times there is not a lot of stuff going on for the kids.
The Prairie Township Community Center has done a
fabulous job of bringing a lot of sports and events here,
but there is not really anything running related.
“When I saw the ad for the (Healthy Kids Running
Series) on Facebook and heard from friends who participated
in the Hilliard running series, I knew that
this was something that we needed for our community.
I am so passionate about this side of town, it is a great
side of town, we just need people to help bring things
together and I knew that I could help with this event.”
The Healthy Kids Running Series — Galloway, Ohio
is a five-week running program designed for children
of all abilities from pre-kindergarten through eighth
grade. The race series will offer age-appropriate running
events including the 50- and 75-yard dashes, the
quarter mile, half mile, or one-mile runs. There will be
a Challenger Division, which is an adaptive 75-yard
race for children with disabilities and/or special needs.
Parents, siblings, and friends will be allowed on the
course with Challenger participants to provide support.
The first running series will take place on April 13
at 3 p.m. at Westland High School. The following races
in the running series will take place on April 27, May
4, May 11, and May 18 at the same time and location.
Kids participating in the competitive divisions compete
for a chance to earn points that will decide who
wins the respective distance trophies. All kids who
participate in the series will receive medals at the end
of the five-week program. Although some of the age
divisions will be competitive, Lynch said the goal for
the program is to “do your best.”
“I don’t want any child participating to feel pressured.
This is a ‘do your best’ event, especially since
this is supposed to be introducing them to running and
walking,” she said. “I don’t expect everybody to know
how to be able to run. Our motto is crawl, walk, run.
That is our progression so wherever they are at in that
stage (is how they will compete in this series).”
There are currently 12 children signed up to compete
in the inaugural Healthy Kids Running Series.
Lynch said children from the South-Western City
Schools District, as well as those from the greater central
Ohio region and Madison County are invited to
sign-up and participate in the event. Lynch is also
looking for local business sponsors (Monfredi Family
Dental and Whiteboard Marketing have committed for
the spring series) and volunteers to support the event
and the children as they compete in the running series.
The $50 registration fee includes race bibs for each
week, a runner shirt, finisher medals, sponsor giveaways
when available, and trophies for top place finishers.
Single day registration is also available one
hour prior to the start of each race at $20. Registration
is open at runsignup.com/race/oh/galloway/healthykidsrunningseriesgallowayoh.

A message from Ed Malek
Dear Fellow Messenger Reader:
I personally believe it is necessary that we take care of each other during
these troubled times. Our families, children, and elderly parents are dependent
upon Medicaid benefits for their health needs and their very existence.
My understanding is that the GOP-controlled Congress wishes to cut a large
portion of families’ Medicaid benefits. If you agree with me that that is
wrong, then please contact your Congressional representative and tell them
and their office, “No. I do not want to see cuts enacted to Medicaid.” It is not
morally right to make cuts to Medicaid.
Thank you, and God bless,
Edwin Malek

Westside Navy veteran celebrates a century
By A. Kevin Corvo
Staff Writer
According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs,
less than 1 percent - or approximately 66,000 - of the 16.4
million men and women who served in the United States
armed forces during World War II are alive today.
Lincoln Village resident Jack Canaday is among them.
The U.S. Navy veteran reached his 100th birthday on
March 7, celebrating with his wife of 74 years, Betty, and
other family and friends at a Texas Roadhouse restaurant
near the couple’s Garden Heights Avenue residence where
they have lived since the year John Kennedy was elected
president.
Calvin Coolidge, America’s 30th president, was in the
White House when Canaday was born in Columbus on
March 7, 1925.
Upon his 18th birthday and only weeks short of graduating
from Central High School, Canaday enlisted in the
U.S. Navy in 1943. He served on a PT (Patrol Torpedo)
boat, specifically, PT-10. The boats were small, maneuverable
and inexpensive to produce compared to other watercraft.
Among the best known PT boats is the PT-109, which
President Kennedy commanded when it was cut in half by
a Japanese destroyer in the Solomon Islands in August
1943. Eleven of the 13 crew members survived the attack
and were rescued nearly a week later.
Canaday served as a gunner and occasionally steered
the PT-10 on its missions in Guadalcanal, Okinawa, the
Philippines, and the Solomon Islands.
Good meals were hard to come by during those years on
the PT-10 and other PT boats but there was the occasional
feast.
“We knew we would have a good meal whenever we had
the chance to pull up to an aircraft carrier,” Canaday said.
Canaday sustained some scars during the missions on
the PT-10 but survived because the Japanese shooting
from the villages or bunkers along the waterfront were
“lousy shots,” he said.
Canaday also escaped harm when the boat delivering
him and other men home passed within several feet of
water mine while en route to Seattle.
“We could have gone to the bottom,” he said.
After arriving back home in west Columbus, Canaday
took a job in the construction sector but also took notice of
a young woman in his neighborhood as she walked to
Sunday morning services at Avondale United Methodist
Church.
Canaday eventually proposed to his future wife, Betty,
but not right away.
“He showed me the engagement ring he had in a cupboard,”
before proposing and giving it to me, Betty, 96,
said.
The couple married on Oct. 20, 1925. They have a
daughter, Christy, a son, Jerry, five grandsons, and one
great-granddaughter.
The couple also had a professional relationship:
after working in the construction industry, Jack
founded his own business, Canaday Grading
Services, for which his wife worked as a secretary,
accountant, and scheduler.
As a one-man business, Canaday took on jobs he
could handle, backfilling and grading sites in
advance of the construction of school buildings and
other structures, as well as golf courses.
Canaday also learned to fly, obtaining a private
pilot’s license when he was about 40 years old. He
continued to fly small aircraft for the next 20 years,
including daytrips to in-state airports to enjoy
lunches.
But he still holds a driver’s
license for his car and
drives to a nearby
McDonald’s for breakfast, his
daughter, Christy, said.
Canaday closed his
business when he was 65
and he and Betty enjoy a
quiet life together, seldom
straying far from home,
according to Christy.
Canaday participated
in an Honor Flight in
2019, visiting the military
museums and monuments
in Washington D.C. and
has also visited the few
surviving World War IIera
PT boats moored in
Massachusetts.
He was also awarded
an honorary high school
diploma from Central High School.

officer who, with the exception of responding
to a 9-1-1 call, will remain within the
boundaries of Prairie Township.
Prior to such service contracts, the
Franklin County Sheriff’s Office - like
those in all of Ohio’s 88 counties - would
patrol all the unincorporated parts within
the entirety of each county. That statutory
requirement still applies but Ohio townships
can also pay above-and-beyond for a
deputy to remain in the borders of that
township, except in the instances of an
emergency.
Last month, the Prairie Township
trustees approved a renewal of its existing
contract with the Franklin County Sheriff’s
Office with a 6.8 percent rate increase,
according to Township Administrator
James Jewell.
The new one-year contract, effective
through Dec. 31, is for an amount not to
exceed $1,474,035 and provides for three
deputies exclusive to Prairie Township,
Jewell said.
These three deputies are in addition to
any other deputy that might be within
Prairie Township at any given time as part
of that deputy’s normal patrol routine in
any portion of the sheriff’s office jurisdictions.
One of three deputies is within Prairie
Township on a 24-hour, 365-day basis; the

period. The third deputy - added in July
2024 for a six-month trial - was kept in the
2025 contract, Jewell said.
That deputy acts in both a law enforcement
and community outreach capacity,
assisting on zoning disputes, parking disputes,
and attending public-relation activities
such as winter coat or school-supply
drives, Jewell said.
Historically, the arrangement has been
well received and a benefit to the residents
of Prairie Township, according to Jewell.
“It is paying for boots on the ground and
our residents have indicated they desire
having deputies they get to know,” Jewell
said.
“In many instances, our residents know
these deputies on sight and by name,”
which would not occur if these deputies
were not exclusive to Prairie Township
through the contract, Jewell said.
The previous contract expired Dec. 31
but it is not unusual for service to continue
while a new contract is finalized.

Man sentenced for drug operation
Follow the Westside Messenger on Facebook
A leader of a large-scale conspiracy
involving narcotics distribution, sex trafficking,
fraud and money laundering was
recently sentenced in U.S. District Court to
264 months in prison.
Patrick M. Saultz, 46, also known as
“White Boy Pat,” of Columbus, is a coleader
of the nearly two dozen individuals
charged in this case, which also involves
the overdose death of at least one individual
and the violent death of a second victim.
From 2008 until June 2022, Saultz and
Cordell Washington, 39, of Pickerington,
ran a large-scale drug trafficking organization
in Columbus. Their operations also
included sex trafficking, labor trafficking,
fraud and money laundering.
Court documents detail that the drug
trafficking organization brought large
quantities of fentanyl, heroin, cocaine,
crack cocaine, methamphetamine, oxycodone,
alprazolam and marijuana into
Columbus. These drugs were sold or used
to coerce individuals into sexual activity for
some members of the drug ring and their
profit.
Saultz began distributing heroin,
cocaine and crack cocaine from his residences
on Vida Place and South Hague
Street in Columbus as early as 2008. The
drug trafficking organization sold drugs
out of more than 20 Columbus residences
to customers and distributed larger
amounts to regional drug traffickers who
then trafficked those narcotics to places
such as West Virginia and the Northern
District of Ohio. Investigators calculated
that the organization was selling approximately
40 grams of fentanyl per day out of
each drug house they oversaw.
Most of the drug dealing took place
within 1,000 feet of Burroughs Elementary
School in Columbus at a residence on
South Burgess. For example, one of
Washington and Saultz’s numerous subordinates
sold approximately $18,000 worth
of narcotics per day from the location on
South Burgess.
Saultz pleaded guilty in July 2023 to
three violations of federal law: conspiracy
to distribute and possess with intent to distribute
controlled substances within 1,000
feet of an elementary school, conspiracy to
commit sex trafficking and concealment
money laundering.
As part of his sentence, Saultz is
ordered to pay restitution to the victims of
sex trafficking, and to forfeit his rights to
all property seized during the investigation
including two cars, a motorcycle, dozens of
firearms, a Rolex watch and more than
$1.7 million in cash in addition to the real
estate.
To date, 25 defendants involved in these
drug and sex trafficking rings have been
convicted or pleaded guilty.
This investigation is part of an
Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task
Forces (OCDETF) operation. OCDETF
identifies, disrupts and dismantles the
highest-level criminal organizations that
threaten the United States using a prosecutor-led,
intelligence-driven, multi-agency
approach. More information can be found
at justice.gov/OCDETF.

Pets of the week
Sammi is a very
sweet laid back 2-
year-old mixed
breed. She currently
weighs 50 pounds.
Sammi came to
Canine Collective
with three puppies,
each have found
their forever homes.
Sammi wants one too! This gal is very affectionate,
walks nicely on the leash and loves
her toys. She would be fine with kids too.
Apply to adopt Sammi from Canine
Collective.

Beau is a sweet and
energetic boy who is
always ready to greet
the day with excitement.
This 1-year-old
loves to play with
toys, enjoys a good
game of fetch, and is
highly treat-motivated,
especially when
showing off his “sit”
command. Though he can be a bit zealous at
times, his friendly and fun-loving nature
makes him a joy to be around. Adopt Beau
from the Franklin County shelter.

Custard, 1, isn’t just
any cat. He is a highspeed
and turbocharged,
play
machine. He runs, he
jumps, he entertains
himself. Whether he
is chasing his favorite
toys or inventing
brand-new games on
the spot, this playful
boy is always on the move. You can meet
Custard at the Colony Cats adoption center.

Callie is a sassy but
sweet calico. Found
outside in the middle
of winter as a stray,
this 2-year-old girl is
ready to enjoy the
inside life. She loves
to have all of the
attention and while
with a slow introduction,
she may be fine
with other animals.
She would also be fine to be your only love.
Adopt Callie from Friends for Life Animal
Haven.

March WESTSIDE 23, 2025 MESSENGER - WESTSIDE - March MESSENGER 23, 2025 - PAGE 9
New action star saves
“Novocaine”
What does it take to be a believable action star? Well, if we are
looking at cinematic examples of the past, all it really took was
being a semi-charismatic man with a decent set of teeth who had
found the perfect body oil to highlight his tanned and heavily muscled
physique.
Throughout the years, however, the characteristics that made
a believable action star evolved, allowing for a new wave of individuals
who are slightly less buffed and bronzed to share a place
on the sacred granite mantle.
The latest example of an actor playing against type and donning
the flowing cape of a potentially new action star is Jack
Quaid. Upon first glance, the son of Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid
does not have the typical look of an action star — or at least compared
to the ones of yore. While his looks definitely do not scream
“I can — and will — mess you up,” he was given the opportunity to
play against his type and showcase his hidden capabilities in the
action-comedy thriller “Novocaine.”
Taken as a whole, “Novocaine” is not a great film. It relies too
heavily on its hook of having a protagonist who can’t feel pain and
the secondary characters are paper thin, and yet the presence of
Quaid is what makes this film fun and watchable. He plays his
role with vulnerability and cleverness, giving the audience a wink
knowing that you are watching this and thinking that you could
definitely take him in a fight. But that is what makes the film
somewhat of a compelling watch — Quaid does this role so well
that if any other actor, especially a known action star with muscles,
had said yes to this project it would be largely unbearable.
Quaid stars in the film as Nathan Caine, a mild-mannered
young man who leads a highly sheltered life due to a genetic condition
known as Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis
(CIPA). To make sure that he does not hurt himself unknowing, he
has retrofitted every square inch of his home with safety measures
— there are tennis balls on every corner table and the shower and
kitchen sink knobs are rigged so that he can’t turn the temperature
too high. He doesn’t even eat solid foods for fear that he will
bite off his tongue.
Because he has lived his life so cautiously, he is afraid to make
connections with others, especially the attractive bank teller
named Sherry (Amber Midthunder) who recently started working
at his branch. After spilling coffee (scalding hot, mind you) on his
hand, Sherry invites him out for pie and a night on the town to
make amends. Deciding not to let life pass him by anymore,
Nathan hesitantly says yes to both, and his entire worldview and
attitude take a shift toward the wonderful after they have a great
night together.
Unfortunately, this new lease on life is destroyed the very next
day when a trio of bank robbers (Ray Nicholson, Conrad Kemp,
Evan Hengst) execute a heist and take Sherry hostage during
their violent getaway. In love for the first time ever and fearing
that the police will not be able to act quickly enough to save her
life, Nathan decides to muster up courage he never knew he possessed
and puts himself in harm’s way to rescue his new girlfriend.
The premise the whole film is built around is immensely silly —
and some might say it is quite insensitive to those who have CIPA
— but Quaid comes about this role so earnestly that it makes it
hard to outright dislike this movie. Although I definitely would
have liked to have seen more fleshed out secondary characters and
have heard better dialogue throughout, Quaid brings just the
right amount of heart and humor to this movie to make it watchable,
if not somewhat entertaining. While you may never buy into
the notion that he could be the next great action star — he can
throw and take a great fake punch though! — you can buy into the
fact that he is one rising star in the industry.
