BE SAFE AT
THE COAST
KNOW THE DANGERS
● Don’t get cut off by the tide. Tides makes sea
levels rise and fall and can cause safe areas of
beaches to quickly disappear. Check tide times
for the day of your visit.
● Know what a rip current is and what to do if
you get caught in one. Rips are strong currents
that can drag you out to sea. If you find yourself
in a rip don’t swim against it. If you can, swim
parallel until you are free of the rip. If you can’t
swim, float on your back and shout for help.
● The RNLI does not advise using inflatable toys in
the sea. Blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for
pools not the sea, where they can be swept out.
STAY TOGETHER
● Always go into the water with someone else.
Friends and family can help in an emergency.
● Where possible swim at a lifeguarded beach or
swimming area and only swim between the red
and yellow flags.
FLOAT TO LIVE
● If you get into trouble in the water, float to live.
● Fight your instinct to thrash around, and keep
hold of anything you have that floats, like a
bodyboard or ball.
● If you don’t have anything that floats, then float
on your back like a starfish. Lean back and
extend your arms and legs.
● Float until you can control your breathing.
● Only then, call for help, swim to safety or
continue floating until help arrives.
Long Distance Footpaths
Devon has hundreds of miles of designated long distance paths
that traverse some of the most beautiful and varied landscapes in the UK.
The main routes are shown on the map (but you will need a better map
if you want to walk these routes). Full details are available from
Tourist Information Centres and online.
