String Time Starters
21 pieces for flexible ensemble
Kathy and David Blackwell
String Time Starters is a collection of 21 flexible ensemble pieces plus some fun warm ups for beginner
string players approximately at the level of the Starters books for violin, viola, and cello.
This book contains the score, which includes the piano part, and a CD with performance and backing
tracks for all the pieces. The piano accompaniment or CD backing is required for each piece. There are
separate books available with parts for violin, viola, cello, and double bass.

This symbol indicates the CD track numbers for each piece. The top number indicates the complete
performance, and the bottom number the accompaniment alone. A tuning note (A) is provided on
CD track 43.

Scoring and parts
The pieces are scored in a variety of ways, from a simple open-string part for all instruments to pieces in
two and three parts. Most pieces have music for two parts—both of which can be played by violins, violas,
and cellos—plus an optional double bass part and a piano accompaniment.
• Part 1 uses the open strings and up to all fingers in the pattern 0–1–23–4 for violin and viola and
0–1–34 for cello.
• Part 2 uses just the open strings in some of the pieces, and open strings and first fingers in
the remainder.
• The optional double bass part uses fingers in the pattern 0–1–4 and some second fingers.

Some pieces have optional violin descants, and others are written to use the E string on the violin and the
C string on the viola and cello. These are shown in the score with separate stems or different staves.
The score shows all the different parts for each piece, but to keep the music uncluttered and clear, Parts 1
and 2 are shown in the treble clef—these parts are played an octave lower by the cellos.
The pieces can be played in all kinds of ways to suit the group available, from duets in any combination
to large ensembles.

String accompaniments
Just for Starters: warm ups
Use these warm ups to start a rehearsal or to focus on a particular technique or skill. Play Part 1 on your
instrument (cello teachers play an octave lower), or use the piano parts or the CD, while pupils play Part
2—these parts may be taught by rote. Pupils can also play Part 1 in the first two pieces, and ‘Wake up!’
can be played as a round in up to four parts. Extend the activities, e.g. by changing key or inventing new
verses to suit the group. Enjoy!
