6 ways you can help reduce waste and save
the oceans
The world’s oceans are a
magical, beautiful ecosystem
— and they urgently need help.
According to the Ellen MacArthur
Foundation, by 2050,
there will be more plastic by
weight than fish in the ocean.
Let that sink in.
You may have heard of the
“Great Pacific Garbage Patch,”
a floating island the size of the
state of Texas that is made of
debris. It is growing, in no
small part because of how
much plastic ends up in the
oceans.
The amount will boggle
your mind. The U.N. Environment
Program reports that the
equivalent of a dump truck’s
worth of plastic is dumped
into the world’s oceans every
minute of every day. And every
one of those plastic bottles will
take more than 450 years to
decompose.
The enormity of it is hard
to get your mind around. If it
makes you wonder what you
can do about it, you’re not
alone.
Plastics are considered to be
an essential part of day-to-day
life for humans, but overuse
threatens the oceans we rely
on for survival.
It’s called the Blue Paradox,
and it has grown into a movement
to address the global
ocean plastic crisis and preserve
the environment before
it’s too late.
“As plastic waste finds its
way to the ocean, it impacts
all of us and the vast majority
of species on our planet,” said
Dr. M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation
International, a nonprofit
dedicated to improving
people’s lives by protecting the
oceans, forests and other living
ecosystems.
“The Blue Paradox brings
the ubiquitousness and usefulness
of plastic and the permanence
and scale of its pollution
front-and-center, encouraging
individuals and businesses
alike to take meaningful action,”
Sanjayan said.
SC Johnson, the maker of
Windex and other home cleaning
brands, is working to turn
the tide on ocean plastic waste.
To clean up this plastic crisis,
it’s not just about individuals
being committed to recycling.
It’s a collective effort from all
of us — individuals, businesses
and governments.
The ocean plastic crisis:
How you can help
The problem seems daunting,
but if everyone does a
little, the changes will make a
big difference. Here’s what you
can do today to help.
1. Sign the petition.
With over 14 million tons of
plastic waste dumped in the
oceans each year, according to
a 2021 report by International
Union for the Conservation of
Nature, the ocean plastic crisis
will not go away on its own,
especially when microplastics
are in our food chain. Disruptive
change is needed. The
solutions can be complex, but
we can work together to solve
the crisis. Add your voice to
this important issue by signing
the petition on The Blue Paradox
website (blueparadox.
com) to help reduce plastic
waste.
2. Sign the pledge.
The Blue Paradox website
also has a pledge you can take
to commit to reducing your
plastic footprint. Our actions
today can help impact tomorrow.
When you sign the pledge,
you’ll be kept in the know with
information about Blue Paradox’s
efforts, and how you’re
making a difference.
3. Take the quiz.
Wondering about your own
plastic footprint? There’s a

Retirement 101: 60% of Americans feel confident about
reaching their financial goals
Retirement is a journey, and every
milestone counts. According to new
research from Empower, Americans
across generations are making progress
toward retirement, from building emergency
funds to paying off debt. While
each generation faces unique financial
challenges, many share a strong sense of
optimism about their financial futures.
Empower commissioned a survey of
1,006 Americans in September 2024.
Some of the key takeaways are encouraging:
• Optimism prevails: 60% of Americans
feel confident about reaching their
financial goals, with Millennials leading
at 63%.
• Money moves: Nearly half of Americans
(47%) have successfully paid off
their debts; 40% have achieved homeownership;
39% have established an
emergency fund; and 32% have started
securing retirement savings.
• Through the ages: Americans aim to
purchase a home by 38, build an emergency
fund by 40, pay off debt by 42,
achieve financial independence by 46,
and accumulate retirement funds by 47.
• Planning for success: Nearly half of
Americans (49%) have a clear financial
plan to meet their money goals.
• Retirement reality check: Americans
aim to retire at 62 but expect they
may work until 70. Rising living costs
(70%), insufficient savings (50%), inflation
(48%) and unexpected financial
emergencies (39%) are among the common
factors contributing to adjusted
timelines.
Progressing toward financial
goals
Unretired Americans are making
headway on key financial goals, with
nearly half (47%) having paid off debt
and 40% achieving homeownership.
Many are also building a financial
cushion. Thirty-nine percent say they
have established an emergency fund,
while 32% have started securing retirement
savings.
For those still working toward these
milestones, optimism is high.
Sixty percent believe they will reach
their goals, with Millennials (63%) being
the most confident. On average, Americans
aim to accomplish their financial
milestones at specific ages — purchasing
a home by 38, building an emergency
fund by 40, paying off debt by 42,
achieving financial independence by 46
and securing retirement funds by 47.
Nearly half of Americans (49%) have a
clear financial plan to meet these targets,
including 49% of Millennials and 50% of
Gen Z. Still, 32% recognize they need a
structured plan, particularly among Gen
X (37%).
Planning for retirement
Some 73% of respondents believe
they’ll retire at the age they envision, although
27% still express concerns about
timing. This sentiment varies slightly by
generation, with Gen Z (28%) and Millennials
(27%) most likely to feel this uncertainty,
followed by Gen X (26%) and
Baby Boomers (11%).
To bolster their retirement plans,
most Americans (67%) are focusing on
reducing or eliminating debt, and many
(63%) are supplementing their income
with multiple jobs. Among younger generations,
68% of Gen Zers have taken on
side hustles to help save for retirement,
while 24% of both Millennials and Gen
Zers are considering job changes for
higher salaries.
Almost half of Americans (48%)
are confident they’ll maintain their
current lifestyle in retirement, with Gen
Z (51%) being the most optimistic. Setting
realistic goals and making intentional
financial decisions - like minimizing
debt, pursuing additional income, and
securing higher wages — can empower
Americans to retire on their own terms
and enjoy the lifestyle they envision.
Navigating retirement setbacks
Most Americans (54%) say they are
on track to retire as planned, though
some feel they have to delay an average
of 6 to 8 years due to economic factors
like rising living costs (70%), insufficient
savings (50%), inflation (48%), and unexpected
financial emergencies (39%).
On average, Americans are targeting
an average retirement age of 62 but anticipate
they may work until around 70.
For those concerned about the potential
impact of job instability, 49% are
mindful of how an unexpected layoff
might affect their retirement plans. This
concern is shared across generations,
with Gen X (52%), Millennials (48%),
Gen Z (47%), and Baby Boomers (26%)
reporting varying degrees of worry.
Building an emergency savings fund,
regularly reviewing your retirement
plan, and adjusting your budget as needed
can help you stay on track. Seeking
advice from a financial planner can also
offer extra security and flexibility to navigate
unexpected challenges.

5 Tips to Upgrade Your Sleep
Good sleep isn’t just about waking up
feeling rested and ready for the day. Quality
sleep, and plenty of it, is important for
your overall health. While you sleep, your
body naturally recharges itself, which puts
you at lower risk for cardiovascular problems
and chronic conditions like diabetes,
as well as improving your immune system.
Sleep also contributes to better brain
function, memory, concentration and
lower stress. According to the National
Institutes of Health, most adults need 7-9
hours of sleep every night to achieve maximum
health benefits.
If you’re falling short of the recommended
amount of sleep, you may be able to
make some adjustments that help you reap
the health benefits of better rest. Learn
what you can do to improve your sleep
with these tips from the experts in safer,
healthier sleep at Naturepedic.
Reduce Light Exposure
Your body’s natural circadian rhythms
are closely aligned with light and dark.
When your body senses light, it sends
signals to your brain that it’s time to be
awake. Light also suppresses your body’s
production of melatonin, a hormone
linked to sleep. Cutting back on bright
lights and avoiding devices at least an hour
before bed can tell your body it’s time to
wind down, and sleeping in a dark room
promotes better rest.
Invest in the Right Mattress
Your mattress plays a major role in your
comfort through the night, so making
sure it fits your needs is an important step
toward getting better rest. Take control
of your comfort with a quality mattress
such as Naturepedic’s EOS (Ergonomic
Organic Sleep) mattress, which is handcrafted
and made without polyurethane
foam, formaldehyde, flame retardants or
fiberglass. The breathable layers of certified
organic cotton, wool and GOTS-approved
latex ensure better temperature
regulation while naturally contouring the
body. An added feature is the ability to
customize each side of the bed by opening
the zippers and adjusting the layered
components for the perfect comfort combination.
Find the Right Sheets
Sheets that are too stiff, scratchy or otherwise
unpleasant make it nearly impossible
to settle in for a good night’s rest. Higher
thread counts tend to be softer, higher

quality sheets. However, you may need to
experiment to find which material suits
you best.
Set a Comfortable Temperature
When you’re too hot or cold, your mind
tends to focus on those sensations rather
than allowing you to slip into a slumber.
Set your thermostat at a comfortable temperature,
adding fans or adjusting the layers
of bedding as necessary to achieve the
perfect level of cozy comfort.
Use a Sound Machine
If you’re a light sleeper, noise can
wreak havoc on your rest. Many people
find sound machines offer two key benefits:
They provide a soothing sound, such
as rain or ocean waves, that allows you to
relax and ease into slumber and constant
background noise, so additional sounds
are less disruptive.
Find more solutions for achieving better
sleep at Naturepedic.com.
Sleeping in Separate Beds
Sleeping in separate beds or rooms is a
choice made by many couples, but results
show it has less to do with the health of the
relationship and more to do with quality
sleep.
According to a survey by Naturepedic,
more than 40% of couples who share
a bed reported that sleep issues have
caused them to question their relationship.
Snoring, conflicting sleep schedules
and different temperature preferences
were frequently cited as concerns. However,
motion transfer and mattress comfort
were also reasons people said they miss
having their own beds.
A bed that allows each person to customize
their comfort can alleviate those
problems. For example, Naturepedic’s
EOS mattress allows you to adjust the
layered components inside to achieve the
perfect comfort combination on each side.
That’s potentially good news for couples
who sleep apart, as 33% of respondents reported
having different mattress firmness
and softness preferences, which ultimately
led to their decision.
“When it comes to sleeping together,
these survey results bring to light how critical
personalized mattress comfort is,” said
Barry Cik, founder and technical director
of Naturepedic. “Luckily, you don’t have to
choose between having a good relationship
or a good night’s sleep.”

Be honest with your answers, and the quiz

4. Reduce your use of single-use plastic
where you can.
This is easier than you might think. Small,
tangible actions such as avoiding single-use
plastics like utensils and coffee cups and swapping
out your single-use plastic water bottles
for a reusable one, can make a huge difference.
5. Recycle your plastic.
Pop it in the bin! It has never been easier to
recycle plastic. Most rigid plastics today are recyclable.
One tip: Give yours a quick rinse before
tossing it into your recycling bin.

6. Buy products made from recycled
plastic.
Industry can do well by doing good … if
there’s a market for it. When you’re buying
plastic products, look for ones made from
recycled plastic. Windex bottles, for example,
have been made from 100% post-consumer
recycled plastic since 2015. Windex
also has the industry’s first bottle made with
100% recovered coastal plastic from a major
home cleaning brand. Let’s all work together
to create a huge market for products
made from recycled plastic and watch how
quickly we solve this problem.
If everyone — including industry — does
their part, we can reduce the amount of
plastics in our oceans. A little effort today
can ensure a more beautiful tomorrow. For

the opportunity to participate
in the things that Jesse loved;
baseball and gymnastics.
In 2014 we kicked off the

Additionally, guest speakers

The camp was a huge success!

How to spot fraud, outsmart
criminals and protect yourself
from scams
BY MARTHA WEAVER, Retail Gift Card Association Fraud
Committee Chair
Criminals are smart, and increasingly sophisticated. With
technology and artificial intelligence (AI) at their fingertips, they
are constantly finding clever ways to take advantage of honest,
hard-working Americans. There are a variety of scams criminals
use to steal money, and many are turning to more cunning methods
that involve bank accounts, debit and credit cards and gift cards.
People love gift cards; they’ve been the top requested gift in
America for nearly two decades according to the National Retail
Federation. But while everyday folks love giving, receiving and using
gift cards, unfortunately so do criminals. Just like other payment
methods, criminals use intelligent means of stealing money from
gift cards — but we have some tips for how to spot them, outsmart
the scammers and protect yourself.
Here are our top gift card safety tips:
get asked to send money or pay for another service with a gift card,
STOP and contact law enforcement, even if the fraudster tells
you not to talk to anyone or that a loved one is in trouble. No real
government agency or business will ever reach out and ask you to
pay them with gift cards — and you can’t pay taxes or bail money
with gift cards.
card hasn’t been tampered with. Look for things like ripped or torn
packaging or missing scratch-off material over the top of the PIN
number. If something doesn’t look right, pick another card and
show the questionable card to a store associate.
of your purchase.
that’s too good to be true, like a big discount on a gift card, it’s likely
a scam or you’re getting a fraudulent card.
or PINs with people you don’t know.
If you think you’ve been scammed or see fraud happening, contact
your local law enforcement or the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint, or
call this toll-free number: 877-FTC-HELP. You can also report IRS
impersonation scams to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax
Administration, visit their website or call 800-366-4484.
The Retail Gift Card Association (RGCA) is a nonprofit trade
organization that represents the gift card industry. The RGCA has
more than 100 of the world’s top brands on its roster. Its mission is
to promote positive gift card experiences among shoppers.
More information about how to have amazing gift card experiences
is available at giftcardsafety.org. Learn more about the gift card
industry at thergca.org.
