Golden Kiss
Calgarians, Stephanie and Ben, work in the airline industry and often find time to visit Ben’s family and enjoy
the beauty (and warmth!) of Vancouver Island. When Ben popped the question, they knew right away
that they wanted to get married on the Saanich Pennisula. Sixty friends and family travelled from all over
BC and Alberta to enjoy, not only the wedding celebration, but also a few days of rest and relaxation. The
couple’s golden retriever also made the trip out from Calgary and was included througout the day, acting as
the ring-bearer and then cupcake taster later in the evening!

THE GREEN WEDDING: DAUNTING OR DOABLE?

These days ‘green’ is in and being eco conscious
is becoming more popular…but what is a ‘green
wedding’? Will going green add stress to planning
your wedding day?
The answer is actually simpler than most couples
might know. Think local, wy and follow the ‘less is
more’ philosophy. Vancouver Island has become a
wonderful place to plan a green wedding. Options
range from farm to table food, ethical hair and
makeup, LEED venues with still more to come as
the industry becomes more conscious.
Planning an eco-conscious wedding may seem
overwhelming so if it seems too much, but is
important to you, then look for a ‘green’ wedding
planner who will walk you through it and help
you find environmentally friendly vendors. That
being said, couples can do it on their own by simply
keeping the main idea of reducing their carbon
footprint in mind and getting creative. Here is a
bonus; it often results in lower costs.
So remember that while a ‘green wedding’ may
seem daunting the truth is that it’s doable. You can
support the environment and have it all on your
wedding day!

THE 2016 AWARDS GALA starred the Fairmont
Empress, Vancouver Island wedding professionals and
stunning photos featuring weddings from the past year.
We were pleased to welcome back hosts Steve and Courtney
Julien who kept us entertained the entire evening along with
presenters and winners. Amanda, of Tickle Tree Stationery
+ Design, created perfect programmes, signs and certificates.
Anne, of Party Mood, organized the entire Palm Court which
featured tastings from the Fairmont Empress chefs, Schur to
Please Wedding & Specialty Cakes, Bon Macaron Patisserie
and Coastal Cake Co. and the stylings of Geoffrey Lundstrom.

on business, marketing and creative. The first VIWIA Day will
be taking place January 31 st , 2017 at the Olympic View Golf

Tips ONE
OF A KIND RINGS….
Proposals may be ever changing but one thing remains the same – there is
always a ring! If you are looking for the ultimate ring then custom designing
or purchasing a one of a kind piece cannot be topped. So we chatted with
Emma Glover, Jewellery Designer & Metalsmith, about the ins and outs of
custom rings.
What do you find interesting about working in ring design? I feel so
honored to work with people in love and hear all the stories – sometimes I
hear about the proposals ahead of time! So that’s where we start. We talk
about their partner’s tastes and personality. If they have inspirational photos
or ideas we look at those to put everything together into a design concept. I
am fortunate to not have to be a salesperson but an artist who creates works
of art that make people very happy!
What is the process for designing a ring? A lot of people come in feeling
stressed thinking it’s going to be complicated but I work really hard to make
it enjoyable. I often create a wax carving of the design so it can be viewed in
3D. Changes can be made at that time and I can give an estimate price before
I start the actual ring.
What inspires you to continue in ring design? I get really inspired by
the nature around me but at other times I am inspired by the people I am
working with – I have had clients bring in music they wanted me to listen to
or jewellery inherited through family. It is always meaningful and special to
create a one of a kind ring that will be worn in love.
