Book club

Terrific books to read over the long weekend this Easter.

Jojo Moyes’ We All Live Here is just a

glorious, funny, delight, from start to

finish. Lila wrote a best-selling book

about keeping your marriage alive ...

before discovering her husband was

having an affair (and now a baby)

with a mum at the local school. She’s

now broke, left with two challenging,

wayward daughters, an elderly

step dad who’s moved in, and her

estranged father who’s arrived on the

doorstep looking for a place to stay.

On the plus side, there’s a couple of

hot men lurking ... jolly helpful since

she’s got to finish her new book and

the publishers are looking for hot

and sexy single mum adventures ... ‘a

literary push-up bra’ is how they put it.

Hysterical. Warm and wise too ... since

she finds out that even a person you

thought you could never forgive, may

just have something to teach you

... about love, friendship, and family.

Micheal Joseph

For these and more brilliant book

club reads, visit exclusivebooks.co.za

Oh we do love a Gregg Hurwitz

thriller. Orphan X - Evan Smoak, former

government black ops assassin, is

known to be the man who’ll be there

for you in your darkest hour. And he’ll

rain hell and thunder on those who

caused you pain. But betray him,

as Evan’s long-time gunsmith and

armourer has just done ... and it’s war.

Nemesis - a roller-coaster of thrills.

This month we’re serving port-style

cocktails at our book club. For a

Porto Urbano, mix equal parts chilled

De Krans Premium Cape Ruby and

cranberry juice with a dash of lime

cordial. Serve in a martini glass with

crushed ice, garnished with orange

peel and a maraschino cherry. Even

easier - and perfect if the weather’s

warm - a Pink Soda. Pour a tot of

De Krans Cape Pink into a tall glass,

top up with soda water, and garnish

with fresh fruit. Look out for De Krans

port-style wines with their fresh new

look in wine stores or on dekrans.co.za

A sense of

purpose

Tanya van Graan

Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY. Photographer: Marcus Cruz

orn in Nelspruit and raised

on a farm near the small

town of Kaapmuiden, Tanya’s

early years were straight out

of a wildlife documentary.

“Growing up on that

farm was pure magic. Mountains

surrounded me, animals were part of

my daily life and my best friends were

the creatures of the bush,” she smiles.

“I’d go barefoot to my tiny primary

school with just 60 kids, and we’d play

outside with the mountains in view. It

was simple, quiet and allowed me to

let my imagination run wild.”

For some, such an isolated upbringing

might have felt lonely, but for Tanya,

it was the best experience of her life.

The natural world was her playground,

setting the foundation for her

adventurous spirit.

Despite having her roots in nature,

Tanya’s destiny was always intertwined

with the stage. With a family full of

performers - her mum a singer and

musician, her sister a dancer and

her dad a guitarist - creativity was

in her blood. “I was always drawn to

performance. As an introvert, I found

my escape in musical theatre, which

is why I studied it first. But modelling?

That was never the plan. I was a total

tomboy!” She laughs. “When I started

acting, though, modelling came

naturally alongside it. It became an

easy way to support myself while

studying, and now I see acting and

modelling as two sides of the same

coin - whether in film, theatre or stills,

it’s all about performance.”

Tanya’s first big break came straight out

of film school when she landed a role

in Hard Copy on SABC 3. But the real

game-changer was Snitch on M-Net,

a 22-episode prime time series where

she scored a lead role, alongside her

former acting lecturer. Talk about full

circle!

With her career in full swing, Tanya

found herself bouncing between

Johannesburg and Cape Town

for work, especially since most

international films are shot in the

Mother City. But it wasn’t just the work

that pulled her to the coast. “I always

felt drawn to the ocean, even though

I didn’t grow up near it. In 2011,

I made the move, and life completely

transformed. Cape Town, like the

Lowveld, is deeply connected to

Ard Matthews and Tanya van Graan

Tanya van Graan’s life reads like an adventure

novel, growing up wild on a game farm,

stepping into the spotlight of the South African

entertainment industry, and eventually making

waves in the ocean as a passionate free diver.

nature, but in a different way. I’ve seen

enough places to know Cape Town is

one of the most beautiful in the world.

There’s still so much to explore here,

and I’m in love with it. The Lowveld

has its mountains and bush, while

Cape Town has the ocean and rugged

beauty. I can’t say one’s better, just

different. Workwise, Cape Town is

where I need to be, but the Lowveld

will always have my heart.”

Tanya and South African rock legend

Ard Matthews had been circling the

same industry for years, but oddly, their

paths had never crossed, until fate (and

a TV show) intervened. “Ard had never

seen my work, and I’d never seen his

shows,” explains the bubbly blonde.

“Then, while I was on Summertide, he

noticed me. Later, he was working

on a music video, and the director

asked if he had an actress in mind. He

April 2025 Get It Lowveld 09

mentioned ‘this woman he’d seen on

TV’, meaning me! He reached out to

congratulate me on the show, asked if

I’d be in the video, and that’s how we

connected.”

From that first conversation, something

clicked. Recently engaged, the couple’s

bond was instant, like two souls

reuniting after lifetimes apart. Now,

they’re not just partners in life but in

creativity, having even collaborated

on the song “Die Rede”, a track Ard

had written years before but only later

realised had always been about her.

While Tanya’s life had always been

linked to nature, it was the ocean that

truly called to her. Even as a child, she

loved being underwater, often sitting

at the bottom of the family pool

just to feel the quiet calm. “I played

underwater hockey in high school,

which was probably where my freediving

instinct started, though I didn’t

know it then. Once I moved to Cape

Town, it became a huge part of my

life. I got certified, not for sport but to

explore safely. Scuba diving is amazing,

but free-diving is my passion. It’s pure

freedom, relying only on your body.”

For Tanya, being underwater is more

than just an adventure; it’s meditative,

humbling and deeply connected to

who she is. “When you’re free diving,

it’s just you and the ocean. No phones,

no distractions, just presence. You can’t

force anything; the sea won’t allow it.

Every dive is different, and you have to

respect that. It’s a lesson in surrender.”

Tanya is passionate about protecting

marine life, and believes that the key

to conservation is connection. “The

ocean has changed a lot in the past

few decades; pollution, overfishing,

climate change. But I don’t let despair

consume me. Instead, I focus on

sharing its beauty. If people fall in love

with the ocean, they’ll want to protect

it. Once you’ve experienced it, you

naturally start making choices that help

preserve it.”

These days, Tanya’s schedule is

anything but predictable, and she loves

it that way. “With Ard, our lives aren’t

structured like a 9-to-5. Some days we

wake up early for a dive, others I might

be on a night shoot until 3am. We write

when inspiration strikes, train when

we feel like it and create when we’re

moved to. It’s a fluid, creative life, and it

works for us.”

Tanya has embraced the Cape

lifestyle completely, but Lowveld

thunderstorms, the mountains, and

that deep, untouched silence of the

bush will always have a special place

in this home-grown girl’s heart. Her

story is about following your passions,

embracing the wild unknown and

trusting that life will unfold exactly as

it should. Whether she’s on-screen,

underwater or side by side with Ard,

Tanya is living proof that success

isn’t about chasing the biggest

opportunities, it’s about finding the

ones that make your soul feel alive.

With an infectious love of life and an adventurous

spirit, Thea Alice McDonald is someone who

throws herself wholeheartedly into everything

she does.

12 Get It Lowveld April 2025

Born and raised in the Lowveld, Thea

laughingly explains that while she did

venture out to explore the bright city

lights, her heart always knew where

home was - right here in the Slowveld.

Growing up in Barberton, surrounded

by breathtaking mountains and

scenery, helped shape her love for

nature.

Like so many, Thea started down

one path before she realised that her

true passion lay elsewhere. “I initially

pursued a Bachelor of Computer

Sciences,” she says, “but it didn’t take

long for me to realise that sitting

behind a desk all day wasn’t for me.”

She found herself drawn to the

travel industry and then the world

of movement and fitness, which is

where she discovered her true calling.

“For me, fitness is so much more than

just staying in shape,” she explains. “It’s

about growth, discipline and pushing

boundaries. There’s always a new

challenge, a new goal and a new way

to test yourself,” she says.

In 2023, Thea had the opportunity to

teach Pilates at The Fitness Studio (The

Ladies Gym), which later became part

of ANEW Sports Resort. From Pilates,

she expanded into stretch classes and

Gentle Flow, a yoga-inspired practice.

And she’s not stopping there. “I just

completed a first aid course,” she says

proudly. “Knowledge is power, and I

believe in lifelong learning. Every

skill we gain adds to our personal

growth and, sometimes, allows

us to help others in crucial

moments.”

When she’s not teaching,

Thea is out exploring. “Hiking

with friends, music festivals

and photography, these

things feed my soul,” she says.

Photography, in particular,

has been a lifelong passion.

“I picked up my first camera

when I was 13, and I’ve

never put it down since.

There’s something magical about

capturing a moment in time, seeing

the world through a different lens.”

We’ve stayed in touch ever since!” Her

knowledge of cars comes from handson

experience.

“I started with a Toyota Tazz, then a VW

Citi Golf. When things went wrong, I

learned from my dad and Oom Japie’s

Repair Shop,” she explains. Her aunt, a

workshop manager, also shared tips.

‘Hiking with

friends, music

festivals and

photography, these

things feed my soul’

Thea is also a devoted ‘bunny mum’

to a cheeky little white rabbit called

Gwagie, who Thea says is the real boss

of the house. “He keeps me on my toes

Gwagie

Thea Alice McDonald

and makes sure I never forget who’s

in charge,” she jokes.

One of the most unique aspects

of Thea’s fitness journey is her love

for pole dancing and aerial arts. “I

started in 2019 out of pure curiosity. I

thought it looked so effortless. Turns

out, it’s anything but!” she laughs.

“It takes an incredible amount of

strength, control and discipline. But

that’s exactly why I love it.”

When aerial silks and hoops were

introduced, she was hooked, even

making the impulse decision to buy

a Lyra hoop. “There’s something

about the combination of grace

and power that just captivates me,

it’s such a confidence booster. You

might surprise yourself with what

you’re capable of!”

Thea has also recently made a

name for herself as a bit of a hero.

One rainy afternoon, she spotted a

stranded mother and child on the

roadside, and didn’t hesitate to stop.

“Something just told me I had to

help,” she recalls. “Luckily, there was

only a minor issue with their car,

and I got them back on the road.

“Eventually, I had to figure things out

myself - whether on the roadside or

with YouTube tutorials. Basic car repair

knowledge is essential for everyone. A

simple toolkit in your car - screwdrivers,

pliers, insulation tape, a flashlight, jack,

cable ties, water and a first aid kit - can

make a huge difference. Knowing

how to change a tyre or recognise

dashboard warnings could save you a

lot of trouble and money.”

Thea loves travel. She fell in love with

the beautiful beaches and relaxed

atmosphere of Byron Bay in Australia,

saying it made her rethink how we

experience life. “It’s all about savouring

the moment. My dream destination

is Greenland,” she adds, “I follow an

Icelandic photographer and his images

of the place are surreal. As a Lowvelder,

I’ve never experienced snow, and I’d

love to see it for myself.”

Thea adds that nothing compares to

living close to nature, hiking through

breathtaking landscapes, visiting

waterfalls and exploring the rich

history of the region. She recently

took part in a guided walk around

Barberton, tracing its history back to

its gin-drenched christening over a

century ago. The Kruger National Park

holds a special place in her heart, as do

trips to Kaapsehoop. “Nature is

my biggest source of inspiration,”

she smiles, “a single flower, a buzzing

bee, a roaring waterfall … It reminds

me that we’re part of something so

much bigger.”

• 25 ml lemon juice • 15 ml simple

syrup • 3 drops of bitters

vigorously for at least 30 seconds.

Strain into an old-fashioned glass

over ice.

Rooibos Lemon Spritzer

For a refreshing, caffeine-free mocktail,

this Rooibos Lemon and Thyme

Spritzer is a winner. The subtle earthy

flavour of rooibos pairs perfectly with

the zesty lemon, and it’s a drink that

both adults and kids can enjoy. It also

packs an antioxidant punch.

• 2 rooibos teabags • 500ml boiling

water • 2 tbsp honey • 60ml lemon juice

• Soda water • Ice • Fresh thyme and

lemon to garnish

Method

Brew the rooibos tea in boiling water,

Savour

Let guests customise their snacks with a fun ‘build-your-own’ station. Lay out a

selection of sweet and/or savoury options for guests, friends and family

to help themselves.

Some ideas for your DIY snack table are the traditional veggie sticks and

dips, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes and bell peppers served with

hummus, guacamole or a tangy yogurt dip. Offer a variety of crackers with a

smorgasbord of cheeses, sun-dried tomatoes, olives and pickles, along with

tartlets and finger sandwiches.

For the sweet-toothed you can offer mini doughnuts, fruit skewers, mini

dessert cups, meringues, fairy cakes and petits fours. Cookies and biscuits

are always a winner, especially shortbread and ginger cookies. Prepare mini

pancakes and waffles in advance and set them out with jugs of cream, syrup

and chocolate sauce.

Who doesn’t love popcorn? Create a popcorn bar by filling bowls with

plain popcorn and providing seasonings like flavoured salt, nutritional yeast,

paprika, cinnamon sugar or even melted chocolate for guests to flavour as

they like.

Elevate your space

with

style

As we step into 2025, home decor is taking

a bold turn, blending sustainability with

statement-making design. Expect a fusion of

nature-inspired elements, futuristic materials

and personalised aesthetics that reflect

individuality.

Trending in 2025

1. Earthy and sustainable materials

Sustainability continues to be a major

influence in home design. Expect

to see furniture and decor crafted

from reclaimed wood, bamboo,

recycled metals and organic fabrics.

Homeowners are opting for ecoconscious

choices that bring warmth

and authenticity into their spaces while

minimising environmental impact.

2. Biophilic design

Bringing nature indoors is a growing

movement. Think indoor gardens,

oversized planters and botanical

wallpaper. Natural textures such as

stone, terracotta and woven rattan

add depth and serenity to interiors,

creating a sanctuary-like atmosphere.

3. Curves and organic shapes

Sharp lines are taking a backseat as

rounded edges and organic shapes

dominate furniture and decor. Sofas,

tables and even lighting fixtures are

embracing softer silhouettes, offering a

more inviting and fluid aesthetic.

4. Tech-integrated spaces

Smart homes are evolving with hidden

technology that blends seamlessly into

decor. Wireless charging furniture, appcontrolled

lighting and voice-activated

design elements enhance both

convenience and modern appeal.

5. Bold colours and textures

While minimalism still has its place,

2025 is bringing in bold colour

palettes. Deep blues, forest greens

and rich terracotta tones are making

statements. Textured walls, velvet

furnishings and mixed-material

decor pieces add visual interest and

personality to any space.

One standout trend leading the way is the accent wall. These striking design

features are dominating interiors, offering a simple yet effective way to refresh a

space. We take a look at a few of 2025’s top decor trends, along with expert tips

on creating a show-stopping accent wall in your home.

Accent walls

One of the biggest design statements this year is the accent wall. Whether

through bold paint, statement wallpaper, textured panels or intricate murals,

accent walls are an easy way to add drama and depth to a room. Here’s why

they’re trending and how you can make yours stand out.

• Easy transformation: An accent wall is a quick, budget-friendly way to

refresh a space without a complete overhaul.

• Personalisation: Homeowners love the freedom to experiment with bold

patterns, colours and textures.

• Defining spaces: In open-plan homes, accent walls help create visual

separation between living areas without adding physical dividers.

• Highlighting architectural features: They can enhance fireplaces, built-in

shelves or high ceilings, drawing attention to a room’s best features.

How to create a stunning accent wall

If you’re ready to jump on this trend, here are some expert tips to ensure your

accent wall enhances your space beautifully.

Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY

1. Choose the right wall

Not every wall is suited for an accent

feature. The best choices are those

that naturally draw attention, such

as the wall behind a bed, sofa or

fireplace. Avoid walls with windows or

too many doors, as they can break up

the design.

2. Pick a statement-making colour

Bold hues like emerald green, deep

navy and terracotta create an elegant

and moody effect. If you prefer softer

tones, opt for pastels or muted earth

shades to maintain a subtle yet

striking impact.

3. Experiment with textures and

materials

Instead of just paint, explore materials

like wood panelling, textured

wallpaper or stone cladding for a highend

look. Geometric designs, shiplap

or Venetian plaster finishes add an

extra layer of sophistication.

4. Incorporate wall murals and

large-scale art

For those who love an artistic flair, a

mural or oversized artwork can turn

your accent wall into a masterpiece.

Opt for hand-painted designs, natureinspired

prints or abstract pieces that

reflect your personal style.

5. Use wallpaper for an instant

upgrade

Peel-and-stick wallpapers are a game

changer for renters or those who want

a quick, non-permanent update. From

tropical prints to metallic accents,

wallpaper options are endless and

easily replaceable when trends shift.

6. Enhance with strategic lighting

Well-placed lighting can elevate your

accent wall to another level. Consider

LED strips, sconces or picture lights

to highlight textures and patterns,

creating a dynamic focal point in the

room.

7. Keep the rest of the room

balanced

While accent walls are meant to

stand out, they should still harmonise

with the rest of your decor. Stick to a

complementary colour palette and

avoid overcrowding the space with

competing patterns or elements.

set in stone

Whether for kitchens, bathrooms or outdoor

entertainment areas, Lowveld Granite is a trusted name

in high-quality stone surfaces, delivering exceptional

craftsmanship and durability with expertly crafted

stonework.

The process begins with the careful selection of premium stone slabs.

Sourced from reputable quarries, these slabs are inspected for quality,

ensuring that each piece meets high standards of durability and aesthetics.

Once chosen, the raw granite undergoes a meticulous fabrication process

that involves cutting, polishing and finishing.

• Cutting and shaping: Using

precision machinery, large granite

slabs are cut to size based on the

client’s specifications. The stone is

then shaped to fit seamlessly into a

kitchen or bathroom space.

• Polishing and finishing: After

shaping, the stone is polished to

enhance its natural beauty and bring

out the depth of its patterns. Clients

can choose from a range of finishes,

including glossy, honed or leathered

textures.

• Installation: Once completed,

the final product is carefully

transported and installed by a team

of professionals. Attention to detail

ensures that each countertop fits

perfectly and is securely positioned.

Granite has long been a top choice

for kitchen countertops, and for

good reason. Homeowners looking

for style, durability and ease of

maintenance often turn to this

natural stone as a premier option.

Here’s why:

• Unmatched durability: Granite

is one of the hardest natural

stones, making it resistant to

scratches, heat, and general wear

and tear. With proper care, granite

countertops can last a lifetime.

• Aesthetic appeal: Every slab

of granite is unique, featuring its

own natural patterns and colour

variations. This means that no two

kitchens will ever look the same,

adding an element of exclusivity to

your home.

• Heat and stain resistance:

Granite’s natural composition allows

it to withstand high temperatures,

making it ideal for kitchen use. With

proper sealing, it also resists stains

from oils, wine and other common

household spills.

• Low maintenance: Unlike some

other countertop materials, granite

requires minimal upkeep. A simple

wipe with a damp cloth and mild

cleaner is enough to keep it looking

pristine.

• Adds property value: Investing

in granite countertops is a great way

to enhance the value of your home.

Its luxurious appearance and longlasting

nature make it a sought-after

feature in real estate.

Lowveld Granite is more than just a supplier; they are specialists in crafting beautiful

and functional stone surfaces. Their team works closely with clients to ensure every

project is tailored to individual preferences, whether for a sleek modern kitchen or a

rustic farmhouse aesthetic.

Beyond kitchen countertops,

Lowveld Granite also provides

stone solutions for:

• Bathroom vanities

• Outdoor braai areas and patios

• Custom tabletops and fireplaces

• Office and commercial installations

• Tombstones

When it comes to choosing the best stone for your home, Lowveld Granite stands

out as a premier provider. Their commitment to quality, precision craftsmanship and

customer satisfaction ensures every installation is a masterpiece. Whether you’re

renovating your kitchen or building from scratch, investing in granite will elevate

your space with timeless beauty and unparalleled durability.

DIY mirror

Makeover

Begin your DIY journey with BUCO and transform your old mirror

into a statement piece with this simple and stylish makeover.

Whether you’re looking to add a touch

of elegance, a modern twist or a pop of

colour, this project is the perfect way to

refresh your space without breaking the

bank. In just a few simple steps, you’ll

have a mirror that’s not only functional

but a stunning statement piece in any

room. This project works just as well for

picture frames. All items used to create

our masterpiece mirror are available at

BUCO Nelspruit.

Prepare the surface

Lightly sand the mirror frame, just

enough to roughen the surface. You

never know what was previously

applied, and if the surface was painted

before, new products might not adhere

properly.

Apply texture paint

Texture paint can be costly, so we

make our own using the following

ingredients:

• Plaster (Gypsum) • Wood glue

Mixing instructions:

Sift the plaster before mixing to get rid

of any lumps.

Combine 4 parts plaster with 1 part

water.

For a more flexible, longer-lasting

mixture, substitute some of the water

with wood glue, which prevents the

mixture from drying out too quickly

and cracking.

Optional extras

Gold leaf can be applied in the grooves

for a vintage effect.

You can sand down certain areas to

enhance the antique look.

The process is similar to decorating a

cake, layering and blending different

elements.

Tips for the best results

• Prepare two batches of plaster mix, as

consistency can vary.

• Use a digital scale for precise

measurements.

• Always use wood and plaster; metal

will rust.

• Stencils can be used to create

decorative patterns.

Painting process

After sanding, wipe off all dust to ensure

a clean surface. Use masking tape on the

inner edges of the mirror to keep them

neat.

The ideal consistency of the texture

paint is like toothpaste, smooth, without

lumps. If the weather is hot, make the

mixture slightly more liquid.

Wood glue is an unsung hero, it

strengthens the plaster and can even be

used for decoupage or image transfers.

Apply the paint, allowing natural folds

and curves to form for a rustic, vintage

look.

Paint options

Any of the paint that is available at BUCO can be used for this project. Tjhoko Paint

maintains its vibrant colour and works well with different effects.

For a three-dimensional effect, apply paint with a damp sponge, this allows the colour

to settle into the grooves.

Pro tip: Do not let the paint dry

in direct sunlight, it will crack.

Texture paint dries quickly, so

work efficiently.

Finishing touches

You can leave the mirror as is for a rustic feel, or lightly sand it for a more refined look.

Use fine sandpaper (600 or 800 grit) to soften sharp edges.

You can create a distressed effect by applying one base colour and lightly brushing

over it with white paint.

If placing the mirror in a bathroom, apply a sealer or varnish for protection.

If the mixture dries too quickly due to heat, lightly mist it with a spray bottle to

prevent cracking.

On average, about 2kg of plaster is needed for this project.

painting and other creative projects.
