From the Editors
Vancouver Island weddings have brought so many trends together this
year. Boho weddings continue to trend strongly with macramé, hats, boots,
and magnificent floral designs while pets keep adorable appearances. We
expect to see dogs attending their human’s wedding but in this issue we
were presented with llamas, goats and cows!
However, social changes around the world are now affecting how couples
can marry. Elopements and small weddings will be the real trend of the
future. Vancouver Island’s wedding industry will lead the way in helping
couples fulfil their dreams even during this difficult time–Love Isn’t
Cancelled! Soaring to mountain heights, golden hours along beaches,

Wedding Awards
THE VANCOUVER ISLAND WEDDING AWARDS, hosted by the
Vancouver Island Wedding Industry Association, returned to its roots
with this year’s Gala on February 28 th , 2020. Mary Winspear Centre was
showcased beginning with a cocktail hour in their foyer area featuring
savoury and sweet treats alongside Twist Victoria and fun photo booth
action. There was so much chatter it was difficult to persuade guests into
the Charlie White Theatre for the actual Awards experience!
Over forty awards were handed out by hosts Kelsey Goodwin, Jon-
Mark Wiltshire and Kenny Podmore, who were surrounded by balloons,
flowers and bright lights! Popcorn, macarons, an Empress Gin sponsored
drink and personal charcuterie boards were delivered by an army of
servers during the Awards ceremony. Decorate Victoria’s Ian and Sandy
ended the Awards portion of the evening with heartfelt speeches handing
off the Industry Award to Nicholas Waters of Toque Catering. Guests
then heard the music of Noah Edwards and the Flood, who began to
play, inviting them to the rest of the evening.
We can only describe this year’s reception as stunning. The entire Bodine
Family Hall was transformed by lounges—each lounge sponsored by
a team of planners, florists and friends. Alongside these lounges was a
spectacular Dessert Showcase featuring various cake makers. Around the
entire perimeter of the Hall were various food and drink sponsors featuring
chefs from Toque Catering, Inn at Laurel Point, Truffles Catering,
Songhees Centre, Charcuterie & Co., and House of Boateng. The Bubble
Bus Co. and Twist Victoria kept everyone well supplied during the
entire evening. Decorate Victoria, The Good Party and Fleurtacious by
Lynda Marie headed up the colourful décor which included thousands
of flowers from Eurosa Farms, too many balloons to count and ceiling
décor that wowed! Guests partied late into the night with DJ Chris
Poynter, ending the evening with swag bags in hand, promising to return
next year.
We are so grateful for all the ‘friendors’ on Vancouver Island coming
together this year and we look forward to working together creating
memories for all the couples marrying here in 2020.

Love isn't cancelled
YOU WERE HAPPILY PLANNING THE BIGGEST day of your lives
when, suddenly, the world changed overnight. It is normal to mourn over
the loss of your day. Every couple deserves to celebrate the gift of love
and share that with family and friends. So here is an encouraging truth…
Love Isn’t Cancelled!
Obviously, we all want to support the hard work of our communities
dealing with COVID-19. The wedding industry has been embracing this
truth, along with their couples who are facing decisions with only the
unknown to guide them. What are your options as an engaged couple?
The first step is to sit down together and really discuss what it is you want
from your wedding day. Do you want a large family gathering? Do religious
traditions set that you must marry in your church? Or was a small intimate
wedding always your goal?
If a large family wedding is what you want, you can go in two directions.
Postpone your wedding for a year or more. Talk to your vendors if already
booked for 2020 and you will find they will be incredibly helpful. Or, you
can choose to elope now and plan the big reception down the road. Either
way, be sure to send out a beautiful ‘postponed’ card or message to your
guests so they can support you.
Planning an intimate wedding? Don’t get too discouraged! You can likely
get married in 2020 or early 2021 as our health officials slowly open the
bubble on public gatherings. Some have chosen to have a ‘rolling’ wedding
where different guests join them throughout the day. This enables most
of your original guests to enjoy one part or another of your day with you.
We've already seen some wonderful ‘outside the box’ weddings taking place.
If you have a wedding planner, you will find that they have already solved
most of these problems and will present you with options. If you are a DIY
bride, be sure to err on the side of caution. You want your wedding day to be
remembered as a happy one where everyone is comfortable!
Whatever you decide and however you celebrate your love story during
this time—you will find family, friends and wedding vendors are there to
help and support you. Just remember…Love Isn’t Cancelled!
