and the difficult decisions being made. This isn’t just a business issue;

1922 BY J.M. KEUNE

Premium hair care for men

1922 BY J.M. KEUNE IS UPGRADED

TO MEET EVERY MEN’S NEED

Back in 1922, Jan Keune took his ambition and turned

it into a hair care brand. Now his son and grandsons

have bottled his courageous spirit for stylish & bold

men everywhere.

1922 by J.M. Keune is a tightly edited collection of

premium grooming staples. Made in the Netherlands,

enriched with homegrown ingredients, and perfected

by science.

With 2025 marking a new perspective on men’s beauty

and the global hair care market projected to triple

over the next two years (Statista), Keune is shifting

its focus from traditional barber-centric offerings to

a more inclusive approach, aiming to serve all hair

professionals worldwide.

UPDATED PACKAGING

Among opening new horizons for men’s hair care by

broadening its perspective, Keune features a modest yet

impactful 25ml increase in all jar-packaged products.

This move isn’t just about offering more value for

money—it’s also about reducing its unnecessary impact

to the environment and economy by switching to jars

made from 100% recycled plastic.

ALL GROOMING NEEDS SATISFIED

The 1922 by J.M. Keune range offers a complete

hair care portfolio for men:

Care: The foundation of every routine with essential

cleansing and nourishing products. Style: Powerful

styling tools that cater to every hair need, from classic

to cutting-edge looks. Beard: Elevates the grooming

game with refined fragrances, and much more!

ABOUT KEUNE

Keune Haircosmetics, a professional hair care brand founded in 1922 in Amsterdam

by scientist Jan Keune. Keune is an independent, family-owned company with

a long-term vision and science is at the heart of everything they do. Keune is driven

by quality, a strong moral compass and full dedication to the hair stylist.

Today, 100 years later, Keune’s products are available in more than 85 countries

worldwide, with the Dutch head office still at the heart of production and

development. Keune is B Corp certified, proving that the company meets the highest

standards of sustainability and social responsibility.

POLAROID

THE HELMUT NEWTON FOUNDATION

PRESENTS “POLAROIDS”, AN EXHIBITION

STAGED AS PART OF EMOP BERLIN 2025.

Michaela Dee

THE HELMUT NEWTON

Foundation presents ‘Polaroids’, an

exhibition staged as part of EMOP

Berlin 2025. Works by Helmut Newton,

Pola Sieverding, Judith Eglington, Sheila

Metzner, and many others are featured in

the exhibition, all in the form of instant

Polaroid photographs. These Polaroid

prints are often unique, one-of-a-kind

pieces. The Polaroid technique quickly

gained global popularity across a wide

range of photographic genres – including

portraiture, landscape, still life, fashion,

and nudes. Helmut Newton was also

a keen enthusiast, photographing with

various Polaroid cameras and even

dedicating 2 books to the medium.

The exhibition demonstrates the use of

Polaroids in fashion shoots for sketching

ideas, checking light, and planning

composition. The exhibition is open in

Berlin until July 27, 2025.

INDULGE THOSE

TRESSES IN THE

IRRESISTIBLY

DELICIOUS ALLURE

OF CHOCO MOCHA

HAIR, A TRULY

DELECTABLE AND

STYLISH STATEMENT!

Gary Kelly & Marie Scarano

■ LUXE RADIANCE. “This look is all about

giving brunettes their moment! Rich,

warm brown tones with layers of depth,

catching the light in all the right ways.

I wanted that perfect mix of sleek yet

sculpted, bold movement that feels luxe

and effortless. It’s glossy, it’s dimensional,

and it’s got that expensive vibe. The colour?

A dream blend of chestnut, caramel, and

mocha - think warm, rich, and full of life.

It’s not just brunette; it’s brunette with

attitude. Shiny, high-impact, and totally

unapologetic. This shade captures the

magic hour of summer evenings.

Luminous sun kissed skin, dynamic

looks and a vibrant spirit highlight the

beauty and freedom of the holiday vibe,

celebrating the enchanting glow of golden

sunsets.” Emma Simmons (UK)

▲ BRUNETTE NYMPH. “While the

haircut unleashes the natural texture

and shape of her hair to enhance her

facial features, this rich coffee shade

expresses the authenticity of her

personality.” Georgia Bolton (USA)

◆ WARM TO COOL, DARK TO LIGHT. “ We

wanted to capture the essence of the unique

earthy shades by beautifully merging

earthy warm and stone-grey-inspired

calm tones. This creates customised trend

looks with soft, natural colour results –

from warm to cool and dark to light.”

Angelo Seminara (UK)

● NATURAL DIMENSIONS. ““Rich

chocolatey, multi-dimensional shades have

been at the forefront of our minds ever

since Mocha Mousse was announced as

Pantone’s Colour of Year – highlighting

the versatility and timelessness of

brunettes, aligning with the growing desire

for authenticity in beauty. This shade is

the perfect balance of warmth and

coolness with golden caramel hues laced

throughout – this expensive-looking, rich,

glossy shade oozes luxury and is adaptable

in so many ways. The blending of the

warm and cool tones creates a beautifully

natural dimension.” Jamie Benny (UK)

■ CHIARO-SCURO. “This two-toned

tousled pixie is charming, with the chocolate

undercut and roots contrasting perfectly

with the blonde lengths for a study

in chiaro-scuro.” Andrew Smith (UK)

▲ TEXTURED GLAM. “This look really

celebrates the natural beauty of

sumptuous, textured hair. It showcases

a stunning blend of warm browns that

adds depth and movement to her already

gorgeous hair. The placement of

chocolate and mocha shades mimics the

natural variations in colour you might

see as subtle reflections from sunlight.

It’s a look that feels both natural and

glamorous, showcasing the beauty of

Afro hair.” Simon Houston (UK)

◆ SUBTLE HINTS OF MOCHA. “Mocha

Mousse may be the Pantone Colour of

the Year, but you don’t have to go all in.

A deep rich super shiny brunette with

subtle hints of mocha makes a beautiful

statement too. And nothing reflects

light like a beautiful brown hue, so make

sure to add extra gloss with a glaze.”

Sam Villa (USA)

● ANDROGYNOUS UNDERTONES. “This look

is all about breaking the boundaries of

traditional brunette shades by bringing a

modern, editorial edge to rich chocolate

and mocha tones. I wanted to create something

that felt both timeless and rebellious

—strong yet playful, structured yet effortlessly

free. The cut is inspired by the 1980s

power aesthetic, with its boyish charm and

androgynous energy, but given a contemporary

softness with weightless layering and

free-flowing curls. I wanted the movement

to feel completely natural yet sculptural,

allowing the texture to be the focal point.

For the colour, I worked with a multidimensional

mocha palette, layering deep

espresso undertones with warm, goldenchocolate

accents to enhance the texture

and add richness. The goal was to create a

brunette that catches the light beautifully

- sophisticated yet completely wearable.

● SOFTNESS, DEPTH, RADIANCE . “What

I love most about creating this look is

how it enhances the model’s natural

beauty while celebrating individuality.

As hairdressers, we have the gift to help

people feel their best, regardless of age,

gender, or background. With this image,

I wanted to do just that - letting the

model’s personality shine through, while

the warm, rich brunette tones bring

softness, depth, and radiance to her hair.

I also loved working with her natural

curls, shaping them to enhance their

movement and definition. It’s all about

creating beautiful hair that feels

authentic, effortless, and empowering.”

Melissa Timperley (UK)

■ MOCHA GOLD. “This look is all about

rich, glossy dimension and effortless style.

The colour is a decadent mocha brown,

a shade that exudes warmth and

sophistication. Syrupy golden highlights

dance through the hair, catching the light

like sunbeams on a summer afternoon.

The blend of mocha and gold is truly

irresistible, creating a multi-tonal effect

that’s both luxurious and natural.

▲ UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE. With ‘Mocha

Mousse’ being announced as the Pantone’s

Colour of the Year, the rise in chocolate

shads has had a massive influence on stylists

who are looking to experiment with their

brunette clients. The interplay of light and

shadow creates a harmonious balance of

warmth and coolness, with undertones of

rich, creamy brunette to emphasise

dimension – a perfect shade for

understated elegance. ” Bruno Marc

Giamattei (UK)

◆ TURN UP THE SHINE. “Her hair had

never been coloured, so we decided on a

low commitment colour ideal for her

lifestyle. We wanted to turn up the shine,

smoothness and warmth. The result is a

deeper brown at the roots and warmer

lighter accents at the ends.”

50 YEARS

of Shear Genius

From salon floor to celebrity icon, Nicky Clarke’s

50-year journey embodies the artistry, innovation,

and star power of hairdressing at its finest.

Nicky‘s journey to hairdressing stardom

started with a fascination for the exciting

hairstyles of the Swinging Sixties. He trained

at the famous Vidal Sassoon academy

in London, learning the precise cutting

and innovative techniques that would become

his trademarks. At Sassoon, he absorbed

not just technical skills but also the

importance of understanding each client‘s

individual style. This training, combined

with his natural talent and ambition, paved

the way for his remarkable success. A

key moment in Nicky‘s career was the

launch of his own salon. His Mayfair salon

catapaulted Nicky as an independent

force in hairdressing, a bold statement of

ambition and a platform for his innovative

vision.

CRAFTING A SIGNATURE:

INNOVATION AND CELEBRITY STYLE

Nicky‘s technical prowess extended

beyond the classic techniques he learned

at Sassoon. He became a master of shape

and texture, pushing the boundaries of

traditional hairdressing with innovative

styles that captured the spirit of the times.

In the 1980s, his slicked-back ponytails

became a signature look, as did his

precision-cut bobs and the edgy buzz cuts

popularized by Annie Lennox, showcasing

his versatility and ability to tap into the

cultural zeitgeist. Perhaps most iconic

was his creation of the "big hair with black

roots" look, a bold and rebellious style

embraced by music icons like Cyndi

Lauper, Madonna, and Bananarama,

solidifying his status as a trendsetter. This

innovative approach quickly caught the

attention of celebrities seeking his unique

ability to transform their image. His work

with Princess Diana, creating elegant and

timeless styles, cemented his reputation

as the go-to stylist for royalty and A-listers

SHAPING THE INDUSTRY

Nicky‘s influence extends beyond the salon chair, as

evidenced by his involvement in developing successful hair

care brands like Frizz Ease, demonstrating his understanding of

both professional and consumer needs. His contributions to

the industry, from inspiring countless stylists to elevating the

public perception of hairdressing, solidify his legacy as a true

visionary. As he celebrates 50 years in the industry, Nicky

Clarke continues to shape the world of hair, leaving an indelible

mark on both the craft and its culture.

CHALLENGING

An NHBF report reveals our sector’s economic struggles. Price hikes &

budget impacts are creating a rough terrain for hair & beauty businesses.

Gary Kelly

The latest report from the National Hair & Beauty Federation

(NHBF) paints a stark picture of a sector grappling with

significant economic challenges. While a slow and steady

recovery is underway, businesses continue to navigate a

landscape marked by rising costs and reduced profitability. The

report highlights a concerning trend: a growing number of salons

and beauty establishments are struggling to stay in the black,

with many just managing to break even. This precarious

financial position has forced an overwhelming majority of

businesses to contemplate or implement price increases, signalling

a critical need to adjust to escalating operational expenses.

Workforce dynamics

shift as businesses

explore alternative

staffing models.

The report underscores

the importance of

addressing the skills

crisis and supporting

apprenticeships.

BUDGETARY IMPACTS AND STAFFING REALITIES

The Autumn Budget’s implications have added another layer

of complexity, with businesses anticipating the necessity to

curtail apprenticeship opportunities, reduce staffing levels, and

decrease investment. Alternative staffing models, including a

shift towards self-employment or hybrid arrangements, are

being explored as businesses seek to adapt to the changing

economic climate. Alarmingly, a significant portion of businesses

are considering downsizing to ensure their survival.

KEY CHALLENGES:

• Price Pressures: Businesses must raise prices due to

rising operational costs.

• Budgetary Impact: Reduced apprenticeships and

staffing levels threaten sector growth.

• Skills Gap: Low recruitment intentions exacerbate the

existing skills crisis.

E78

LANDSCAPE

NAVIGATING THE SKILLS CRISIS AND FUTURE OUTLOOK

Recruitment intentions remain muted, exacerbating the skills

crisis outlined in previous NHBF reports. The lack of experienced

staff and reduced apprenticeship starts pose a substantial

threat to the sector’s future. With businesses adopting a

cautious outlook, growth intentions have diminished, and a

growing number are facing the difficult decision to downsize.

The NHBF is advocating for enhanced apprenticeship support to

address the skills gap and ensure the sector’s long-term

sustainability. Despite these challenges, the sector remains

resilient, with businesses demonstrating a commitment to

adapting and innovating in the face of adversity.

The NHBF encourages industry members to collaborate, share

best practices, and support one another through these

challenging times. Proactive strategies and a focus on longterm

sustainability are essential to ensure the continued

success of the hair and beauty sector.

Social media has revolutionised

hairdressing. Discover how to

transform your salon and inspire

clients with its power.

CIALSGary Kelly

E80

In today’s interconnected world, social media

has become an indispensable tool for creative

professionals. For hairdressers, it’s no longer

just about showcasing finished looks; it’s about

building a digital brand that reflects your unique

artistry and connects with your ideal clientele.

From captivating imagery that inspires to behindthe-scenes

glimpses that build trust, social

media empowers you to redefine your salon

experience and elevate your craft to new heights.

>>>

CULTIVATING A COMMUNITY

Social media isn’t just a platform

for self-promotion; it’s an opportunity

to cultivate a community around

your brand. By sharing your passion,

interacting with your followers,

and showcasing the diverse talents

of your team, you can create a

sense of connection and build lasting

relationships. Engage with your

audience, respond to comments,

and use your platform to inspire and

educate. This authentic engagement

will not only attract new clients

but also foster loyalty among

existing ones.

A SHARED JOURNEY

OF INSPIRATION

Social media serves as a dynamic

hub for inspiration, where trends

emerge, techniques are shared,

and the boundaries of hair artistry

are constantly pushed. By exploring

and sharing the latest trends,

showcasing diverse styles, and

celebrating individuality, you can

empower your clients to embrace

change and step outside their

comfort zones. From mood boards

and colour palettes to behindthe-scenes

glimpses of your creative

process, social media provides

a platform for collaboration and

shared inspiration.

The following case studies

demonstrate how four successful

salon owners are harnessing

the power of digital platforms

to elevate their craft and build

thriving businesses.

TIM SCOTT-WRIGHT at The Hair Surgery

”At The Hair Surgery, social media isn’t just about posting great hair (though

we do plenty of that!): it’s about building a real connection with the people

who follow us. It's our way of sharing what we love, keeping our clients

in the loop, and creating a space where everyone

feels part of the journey. We use our platform to

educate and inspire, whether it's breaking down

the latest hair trends, showing off the services we

offer in the salon, or giving expert advice. We want

our clients to feel confident, informed, and excited

about their hair. But it's not all just business, our

team is at the heart of what we do, and we love

to let that shine through. Whether it’s a funny

behind-the-scenes moment, a daft team selfie, or a

bit of classic salon banter, we make sure there’s plenty of personality in our

posts. Because The Hair Surgery isn’t just a salon, it's a place where people

feel welcome, valued, and part of something special. We chat with our

followers, respond to comments, and genuinely enjoy interacting with the

people who support us. It’s this kind of connection that keeps clients coming

back, and it’s what makes our community feel like family.“

MELISSA TIMPERLEY

Owner of Melissa Timperley Salons in Manchester

“Social media is the perfect way to showcase your business, with

zero cost. I always think of my platforms as a window into my

business and a way of speaking to potential clients. Think about

why a client would choose you over your competition, then use

social media to shout about this. Showcase your best work, highlight

your retail products, talk about your service menu. Encourage your

clients to tag you in content they capture – every time your business

is shared, you are reaching new audiences that can translate to

new customers. And don’t just stick to hair transformations – show

off your salon space, highlight your retail products, talk about your

service menu. I love to see those glimpses into real salon life,

like the consultation process or team meetings – Instagram loves

authentic content right now, so don’t overthink it. While you are

trying to grow your social presence, don’t neglect your existing

followers. Instagram is ideal for sharing new services and retail

products, so let your clients know what’s new and how it could

benefit them. Engagement is essential for a successful social

presence, so share information which starts a conversation, or

encourages input: What trends are your clients loving right now,

what are their biggest hair concerns, how do they style their hair at

home? Respond to their questions and use their requests to shape

the direction of your content. Most of all, try to have fun with it!”

E82

ROBBIE LYONS

Rainbow Room International

”Social media is the biggest free

marketing tool in the world. In

my role in the Rainbow Room

International Academy, social media

is my main focus digitally, I deal with our brand platforms

and ensure we are engaging and connecting on the correct

level at all times. We want to show off our full team, salons

and potential to not only current followers but those we

wanted to reach and entice into our world of hair. Together,

we came up with different ways to interact and engage both

with local businesses and also show-case the best of our

brand, using the grid and highlights to firstly create our brand

‘profile.‘ We focused on showcasing the salons and interiors

via our stories, highlighting them and ensuring our clients

had access to view at any given time. With social media

dubbed the new websites, it was important that we kept

these as visible as possible so clients could envisage the

space before they visited – this makes them more

comfortable. Likewise we have folders/highlights for the

salons to showcase their niches and key services. As social

has evolved, we have introduced engaging reels and videos

from each of the salons, alongside hair pictures and offers.

We use our social media more to engage and interact with our

clients. We know clients want to see and get to know a team

before they visit somewhere, therefore showcasing our teams

and their personalities for us has been a win-win situation.”

The Hair Surgery

Gritt London

For hairdressers, it’s not just

about showcasing finished looks,

but building a digital brand that

reflects your unique artistry and

connects with your ideal clientele.

Rainbow Room International

Melissa Timperley Salons

MARNEY LIAN at Gritt, London

“Social media is like your salon’s shopfront, but instead of just attracting passersby, it connects you

with a whole community. At Gritt London, we don't just post pretty pictures – we tell a story, share our

personality, and celebrate hair. It’s about showing the real energy of the salon, from transformations

and trend-led colour work to those little behind-the-scenes moments that make people feel part of

something. Engagement is key. It’s not just about throwing content out there; it’s about starting

conversations. We always respond to comments, share our clients’ selfies, and ask questions

that get people talking. Instagram and TikTok in particular are powerful tools to spark interest

and inspire people to try something new. The trick is to keep it authentic. Clients and

followers love to see personality – the quirks, the laughs, the passion behind

what we do. And consistency is everything. If you want to grow your audience,

you've got to be present. Whether it's a stunning balayage or a treatment

that brings hair back to life, we make sure our content reflects the

quality and creativity we bring to every client with a clear, consistent

look that reflects our brand. At the end of the day, social media isn’t

just a marketing tool – it’s a way to connect, inspire, and build trust.

That’s what grows your brand and turns followers into clients.”
