In this issue of Group Travel Today,

we boldly go to Jodrell Bank, that

majestic ear to the universe, which

has been quietly listening to the

cosmos since before your average

teenager knew what a ringtone

was. Groups can marvel at the

towering Lovell Telescope, stroll

through space-themed gardens,

and pretend to understand dark

matter. It’s the kind of outing that

makes you feel clever, even if your

last science lesson involved a

Bunsen burner and a fire alarm.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site,

it’s a day out that manages to be

both mind-expanding and

reassuringly tea-and-biscuits

friendly.

And speaking of great journeys,

the Excursions Show was back.

Alongside the exhibitors and all

their tempting brochures, a lucky

bunch took part in the Ellen Smith

Fam Trip—a whirlwind of castles,

railways, and cruise-ship-style

comfort (without the sea sickness).

The trip finished with a breezy stop

at The National Stud in Newmarket,

where horsepower of a very

different kind was on show.

As one organiser summed it up: “It

was like a cruise ship on land, only

with more castles and fewer

lifeboats.” Another said simply: “It

was cool,” which is high praise

indeed when it comes from a

grandson.

Elsewhere in this issue, we turn the

spotlight on Dorset, Canterbury,

and Sussex, dive into some musical

adventures, and take a moment to

appreciate the British garden in all

its group-friendly, well-labelled

glory. We also take a look at

Northumberland and County

Durham, proving once again that

adventure can be found north of

Watford Gap and not just in the

form of unusual local cheese.

And finally a trip to Liverpools

musical streets a must for any

group.

Jodrell Bank is where the

countryside goes cosmic.

One minute you're driving

past sheep and tea rooms,

the next – wham – there's a

colossal telescope rising

out of the Cheshire fields

like a sci-fi sunflower. The

Lovell Telescope is the star

here: all swooping metal

and moon-facing majesty,

looking like it's about to

beam up the National Trust.

It listens to the universe,

galaxies, quasars,

messages from aliens

asking if we’ve tried

turning Earth off and on

again. There’s a bit of a

spacey theme park vibe,

too: hands-on exhibits,

cosmic curiosities, and the

slightly thrilling possibility

of bumping into Brian Cox

‘coach friendly’. Making

it easy for a GTO, tour

to visit somewhere

will likely result in the

group spending time

there. That time will include

spending money

elsewhere. Make it difficult

for a visit and the

At the start of the

Keynote Theatre sessions,

Phil Smith, UK

coach manager with

body, the Confederation

of Passenger Transport

(CPT), also picked

up on the importance

of being ‘coach

friendly’.

CPT manages a scheme

that awards ‘Coach

Friendly’ status to destinations

and attractions

that meet a set of laid

down criteria. Being

able to promote themselves

as officially

‘coach friendly’ undoubtedly

brings a

commercial benefit.

Seeing the status gives

GTOs confidence that

the place they’re visiting

really wants groups.

Phil Smith told the audience

that there are

some 36 accredited

destinations and attractions

across the UK,

with a handful currently

going through the accreditation

process.

It doesn’t sound many

though, although as Phil

pointed out, there are a

great many destinations

and attractions

who are indeed ‘coach

friendly’ already.

But across the two days

of the show, the messaging

was clear.

Recognise the benefits

that coaches and

groups can bring to a

destination or attraction,

get the welcome

facilities in place, and

everyone benefits.

Shows such as BTTS are

helping spread the message.

It’s a message

that every destination

and attraction needs to

embrace!

Ellen Smith Excursions 2025 Fam Trip

I’m sure our groups will be

back if they revisit the

area in the future.

The exhibitors at Excursion

were excellent and we all

picked up lots of ideas for

future trips.

Sunday was a lovely sunny

day, and we set off eager

for our visits. Bear in mind

there are weight limits on

the bridges around Audley

End, so we had to take a

detour. Once there, we

participants said they’d

have liked a free day at

facilities on offer. Other

than that, we received a

very warm welcome, staff

were friendly & helpful,

food was delicious and the

entertainment excellent.

Adam at Epping Ongar

enjoyed a fabulous tour

with our guide. Everyone

enjoyed it.

On then to Hedingham

Castle. Not suitable for

anyone with mobility issues

due to the uphill walk to

the castle and then the

uneven steps up to and

inside the castle. However,

our guide was excellent

and very entertaining. He

even had one of our

organisers dressed up with

a bit of audience

participation!

We called in at Newmarket

on the way home on

Monday and enjoyed a

whistle-stop tour of the

National Stud. An

excellent visit.

All in all it was a very

successful weekend and

everyone commented on

how useful it was. I have

listed some comments

below:

‘I'd just like to thank you

once again for organising

a fantastic trip. Ken and I

really enjoyed ourselves.

We met some lovely

people and gained a lot of

useful information. I'm sure

we'll benefit from the

whole experience.’

‘A quick email to thank you

on behalf of Margaret and

myself for a wonderful

weekend away. You must

have put a lot of effort

into organising this and, I

assure you, this was

appreciated.

Potters Five Lakes was

excellent, a bit like being

on a cruise ship without

the turbulence, although it

was a pity that we didn’t

have time to enjoy all the

facilities. However, this was

more than made up for by

the excursions, all of which

we enjoyed and to which

we would like to return.

One of our grandsons said

that ‘it was cool’ that we

had been pitch side at

Wembley.’

Athelhampton House &

Gardens: A Timeless

Treasure for Groups

Marsham Court Hotel

The transformation of a

historic Bournemouth hotel,

making seaside holidays

accessible to all.

This historic hotel with

stunning views across the

bay from Old Harry Rocks

to the West, and the

Needles and Isle of Wight

to the East, has been

welcoming holidaymakers

and groups to

Bournemouth’s East Cliff for

more than a century.

But after the owning family

nursed their mum Jennie

through the later stages of

her battle with cancer,

they saw first-hand the

true impact of limited

mobility and embarked on

a massive transformation

project to make their hotel

more accessible.

As well as installing a

wheelchair lift and

creating level access

across the ground floor, the

hotel now offers five

accessible rooms, all with

profiling beds and

removable ceiling hoists,

and one has a connecting

room for a carer or family

members.

Marsham Court is also the

first, and to date, only

hotel in the UK to have

installed a ‘Changing

Places’ toilet and shower,

which is part of a national

network of registered

facilities with enough

space and the right

equipment to allow

people who are limited in

their mobility to use the

toilet or shower in safety

and comfort.

Another addition is a

sensory room with soft

furnishings, an illuminated

bubble tube, colour

A ramp down to the

swimming pool and an I-

swim pool hoist and

transfer board make this

area fully accessible.

Great care has been put

not only into providing the

very best facilities to

support people with

additional needs, but also

in thinking about guests’

experience of moving

about the hotel. Detail

included in the hotel's

accessibility statement,

published on its website,

includes precise

measurements of doors,

transfer spaces and

walkways, as well as

details on flooring types,

colour schemes and

lighting. A more recent

addition is their 3D virtual

tour and accessibility

videos which feature all

bedrooms and public

areas of the hotel so that

guests can satisfy

themselves that they are

the right hotel for them

before they book.

From rockets to rare telescopes, Britain’s got space fever—minus the zero gravity. Here’s where

Start with the National

Space Centre in

Leicester—a gleaming

rocket-shaped temple to

all things interstellar, where

grown adults can gleefully

push buttons, sit in pretend

capsules, and confidently

mispronounce “Soyuz.” It’s

part museum, part launch

simulator, part excuse to

say, “I could totally do this,”

while clutching a flat

white. The planetarium is

astonishing. It’s like IMAX

Over in London, the Royal

Observatory Greenwich

offers a rare treat: the

chance to stand across

the Prime Meridian, which

is either profound or a nifty

photo op for your LinkedIn

profile, depending on how

deep you are. There’s

something quite moving

about seeing the tools

used to measure the

heavens in a time before

smartphones. Also, the gift

shop sells a time-themed

tea towel, which is about

as British as astrophysics

gets.

In Bristol, We The Curious

(previously known as At-

Bristol, presumably before

they consulted a branding

agency) is the kind of

place where everything

beeps, flashes, and

occasionally sprays mist in

your face. It’s great fun.

Their 3D planetarium is

particularly good for those

of us who like our

stargazing with reclining

seats and zero risk of

hypothermia.

For a more relaxed affair,

there’s the Winchester

Science Centre, complete

with its own excellent

planetarium, live science

shows, and plenty of

gravity-defying

enthusiasm. It’s especially

good for families, or

anyone who needs the

solar system explained

without diagrams that look

like a tax return.

Speaking of fresh air,

Kielder Observatory in

Northumberland offers

actual stars. In the sky. Real

ones. No screens, no CGI.

Just you, the cosmos, and

the creeping suspicion

you’ve accidentally joined

a cult. It’s wonderfully

remote—perfect for

stargazing and ideal if you

enjoy losing phone signal

and the will to return to

normal life.

Hop across to Northern

Ireland for the Armagh

Observatory and

Planetarium, where history

and modern science hold

hands and whisper sweet

nothings about quasars.

There’s a dome show, of

course, and enough

interactive exhibits to

keep your inner space

cadet thoroughly

entertained.

All in all, you don’t have to

leave Earth to explore the

universe. But if you do,

pack snacks. Britain does

space very well—but the

aliens might not do

shortbread.

Mersey

Beats

Turn up the stereo on

Scotland Road. Put your

ear buds away and put

*Penny Lane* in your heart,

in your soul. Whether it’s

Gerry that makes the pace

for you, or a harmonious

trio of pop perfection that

sees you walking down the

street, staring at the sky,

Simon Walton conducts a

melodically inspired trip to

a city of music that really

can make you whole

again.

Mersey Beats

You just know there’s

something beating in the

heart of Liverpool. You

cannot help but be drawn

to St John’s Beacon, the

icon of the city, as famous

as the Cathedral or the

ferry that still plies across

the Mersey.

Of course, you’ll find

nothing but furrowed

brows and puzzled looks

when you ask for

directions. “Oh, you mean

the Radio City Tower,” is

the universal reply. And, of

course, that’s exactly what

you mean.

Half a century on, and the

listed structure is as

recognisably part of the

city scape as the barrelled

roof of Lime Street Station

and the green expanse of

Stanley Park. Yet, it’s not

just an unrivalled vantage

point that the 138 metretall

structure affords. It’s

possibly the coolest place

to work in the whole of

Merseyside. The rooftop

antenna blasts out the

beats from Radio City, the

pop music station that

echoes the modern music

scene of the city. One of

the stalwarts of

“independent local radio”,

Radio City celebrates its

own half-centenary in

2024, just behind the

Beacon itself.

More venerable still, are

the famous Liver Birds –

“live-her” birds as any

Scouse will poetically and

phonetically tell you. The

winged-guardians still

perch on their neverending

vigil over the city,

high atop the equally

advantageous vantage of

the Royal Liver Building.

Complete the trio with the

neighbouring Cunard

Building and the Port of

Liverpool Building, and you

have the Three Graces

upon the city's waterfront.

As if its musical heritage

was not enough, the

Maritime Mercantile City is

another chart topper from

the symphony of surprises

that is inspiring Liverpool.

Back when Radio City was

the real thing – and not just

another arm of corporate

broadcasting that defies

the description of local

radio – the foyer was full of

local acts made big in the

business. Loving crowds

were swaying away to long

haired local crooners

Liverpool Express, and their

number one hits, like *You

Are My Love*, inspired by

the city itself. The beats

may be more frenetic at

Creamfields, the venerable

dance music festival, most

closely associated with

the city. Although now a

weekend out in the

country – at nearby

Daresbury Estate in

Cheshire – the quarter of a

century-old gathering

celebrates the royalty of

rave, with the international

likes of Tiesto, Avicii, and

some Scottish jock named

Mylo, one time squeeze of

Taylor Swift, named among

the headliners.

Songs of Praise

Of course, you’ll never walk

alone if you remember the

other famous Scots to

have made a song and

dance about Liverpool.

From Dalgleish and Souness

to Davie Moyes and Dixie

Dean, the footballers who

have made the red of

Liverpool and the blue of

Everton sporting icons of

the city, are remembered

as much for their skills on

the grass of Anfield and

Goodison, as they are for

the music they evoke.

The entirely religious

experience of a roof-lifting

goal aside, there’s praise in

more reverent measure for

44

the iconic Liverpool

Cathedral. Yet, like the

eternal choice between

the reds and the blues,

Liverpool’s divided loyalties

extend to its places of

worship too. The venerable

Liverpool Anglican

Cathedral, on St James's

Mount, is testament to the

gothic splendour of

ancient Liverpool. On the

other hand, the classically

sixties design of the

Catholic Liverpool

Metropolitan Cathedral, on

Mount Pleasant, stands in

stark architectural

contrast. Affectionally

known as ‘Paddy’s

Wigwam’, the unique

design plays more than a

role in the spiritual life of

the city. The enduring Irish

influence in the city,

centres around its Catholic

community, but the church

is a reminder of the dark

days of the Blitz, when

Liverpool was repeatedly

targeted in the Second

World War.

That so much of Liverpool’s

heritage remains, and is in

vibrant use today, is reason

enough to give praise.

None more so than the

Philharmonic Hall, home to

the Royal Liverpool

Philharmonic Orchestra. Far

more than a four-piece,

their orchestral

manoeuvres in the light are

at the heart of the

Liverpool International

Music Festival. It’s among

the city’s rather more

refined musical

experiences, and, like

almost every other act

from the city – still

performing today – even if

they have gone through

more line-up changes than

the cast of *Brookside* (a

soap opera, since you

question the ‘musical’

relevance).

Some may consider the

suited and seated

musicians of the LPO to be

the real thing when it

comes to Liverpool’s music

scene. To others, the real

thing really is the Real

Thing. Born out of

Liverpool’s Afro-Caribbean

community, the band hit

the heights in the

seventies. *You To Me Are

Everything* was a

worldwide hit and gave

Toxteth and Dingle (Gerry

Marsden’s birthplace by

the way) something to

cheer about, when the

image of the city was

more about riots and

rubbish piling up in the

streets.

Remarkably, the band, like

so much of Liverpool’s

heritage, still endures. You

may catch them

performing around the

world, and even find lead

songwriter Chris Amoo not

just wearing his trademark

Afghan coat, but breeding

Afghan hounds too – with

Crufts levels of success no

less.

Looking back on when we

first met

Yet, here we are on a

musical, magical, mystery

tour of Liverpool (a journey

you can undertake hourly

by sightseeing bus) and

we’ve not mentioned the

biggest musical sensation

of them all. Yes, how could

we forget the eternal

flame that is the fab …

three: Atomic Kitten.

Famously splitting on the

eve of their biggest and

enduring success, the

band are very much whole

again, and, in a recurring

refrain, still performing.

So, you’ll seek out the

Music Museum, and of

course the Cavern Club –

but sadly not be able to

find Eric’s (long

demolished). You’ll make a

pilgrimage to visit Eleanor

Rigby’s grave and

Strawberry Field’s gate.

You’ll take a ferry across

the Mersey, and look out

for a yellow submarine.

You’ll wonder why, above

us there is only sky at

Liverpool John Lennon

Airport, and all the while,

you’ll remark on the

wonderful musical heritage

of this lyrical city of

Liverpool. Marsden,

McCluskey, McClarnon and

for sure there’s another

“mac” in there somewhere.

Like a song you can’t get

out of your head, but also

can’t quite remember,

there’s another band from

Liverpool that deserves a

mention. Sorry, but memory

fails. After all, it’s been a

hard day’s night and, to

put together this musical

meander through

Merseyside, one has been

working like a dog.

“You’ll make a pilgrimage

to visit Eleanor Rigby’s

grave and Strawberry

Field’s gate. You’ll take a

ferry across the Mersey,

and look out for a yellow

submarine.”
