On your mark. Get set. Grocery! The
Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and
The Kroger Co of Columbus Division celebrated
National Agriculture Month in the
grocery store March 28 with a supermarket
showdown event to promote locally grown
and made products.
Local celebrity shoppers raced through
the aisles of the Kroger Marketplace in
Plain City, filling their shopping carts with
as many Ohio Proud grocery products as
possible for a limited amount of time. All
the items collected during the race are
being donated by The Kroger Co of Columbus
to the Plain City Food Pantry to help
community members in need.
“It’s a great day for agriculture when we
can combine promoting Ohio’s home-grown
foods and products with uplifting our local
communities,” said ODA Director Brian
Baldridge. “This food plays a vital role in
our economy and contributes to the nutritional
diversity and health of Ohio’s communities.
We appreciate our partnership
with Kroger to help provide those fresh,
quality products to our neighbors who need
it most.”
Celebrity shoppers included ODA Director
Brian Baldridge, Rep. Rodney Creech
(Chair, House Agriculture Committee),
Bagster (Kroger
Mascot), Mr. Pig
(Ohio Pork Council
Mascot), Sen. Beth
Liston (Member,
Senate Agriculture
and Natural Resources

the Plain City Food Pantry. Brutus Buckeye
had the highest individual total, rounding
up $967.71 worth of groceries.
Ohio Proud products can be found in
nearly all grocery stores across Ohio, locally
owned shops, and farmers markets.
The membership program through ODA
showcases food and agricultural products
that are at least 50% grown, raised, or
processed in the Buckeye State. Ohio Proud
helps small businesses stick out in a marketplace
like Kroger, which serves 11 million
customers daily.
“We are thrilled to host this exciting
event at our local store, dedicated to supporting
the incredible work of the Plain
City Food Pantry in feeding our neighbors
in need,” said Mark Bruce, corporate affairs
manager for the Columbus Division. “This
event is a wonderful opportunity to come
together, enjoy local flavors, and make a
meaningful impact in our community.”
Outside of the grocery store in the
Jerome Village Marketplace, ODA’s Division
of Weights and Measures had its
heavy-capacity scale testing truck on display,
which is used to check vehicle and
livestock scales across Ohio.
During the month of March, ODA encourages
all Ohioans to recognize our farmers,
food processors, agricultural
businesses, and industry for National Agriculture
Month.
Food and agriculture is Ohio’s number
one industry, adding $124 billion to the
economy each year. From those tending
fields to those involved in our restaurant
industry, 1 in 8 Ohioans are employed in
the agricultural community that serves us
with dedication and care. More than 200
different crops and livestock are grown and
raised in Ohio, providing families with
food, fuel, and fiber.

No Labels. Just Neighbors
Recently, the Ohio legislature made a bold decision to pass Senate Bill
1, which ended state-mandated. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs
in our colleges and universities.
I know this decision is controversial. And I know some are afraid. Afraid
that ending DEI means erasing people. Afraid that voices will be silenced.
Afraid that progress will be undone.
Let me speak directly to that fear: This is not about censure or erasure. It
is not about exclusion. It is about inclusion that transcends labels.
Because DEI has become a system that sorts us—by race, by gender, by
identity—creating a culture where we are defined by our categories instead
of our character. Where we look at each other’s faces instead of listening
to each other’s hearts.
That’s not real inclusion. That’s division with good intentions.
Now is the time for a new vision that moves us from division to unity. A
vision that believes in the power of people over programs. That believes
in true inclusion, not institutional separation.
I dare to believe that we can—and must—build a future where our
care for one another isn’t assigned or mandated but lived out in how we
treat each other every day.
A future rooted in this simple, powerful idea:
No labels. Just neighbors
It’s time to remove the labels.
We can do better. And we must do better. Because we are NEIGHBORS.
What’s good for your family is also good for my family. Mi casa es Su casa.
Your struggle is my struggle. Because we are ONE.
We are Ohioans. We are Americans. We are Neighbors.
The Bible teaches us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Therefore,
My success should uplift you, not leave you behind.
In the words of the late great Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Injustice
anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
And that’s what this moment demands—that we stop treating justice
as something to be distributed based on categories and start treating it
as a collective concern that we build together.
Ohio is not a place of boxes. We are a place of people. People with dreams,
fears, goals, and grit.
We are 11 million strong of white, Black, Latino, Asian, rural, urban, gay,
straight, immigrant, and native-born—and all of us belong here.
However, we do not need the DEI bureaucracy to prove that. We need
each other. We need classrooms that teach students to think, not conform.
We need universities that unify, not divide.
And we need a state that says: Your worth IS NOT based on your label—
it’s based on your humanity. While we cannot turn back the clock, we
can turn over the page. To move beyond artificial inclusion and into
something real. To move beyond mediocrity and into meritocracy. Something
that says: You don’t need a program to belong. You belong because
you’re human. Because you’re valued. Because you’re my neighbor.
This is not about doing less for some. It’s about building more for everyone—together.
As we end the era of “us versus them, let us walk forward as Ohioans, as
Americans, and most importantly, as Neighbors. Because in this house,
in this state, at this moment— There are No labels. Just Neighbors.
I call on all leaders to join me in a promise to Ohioans to make this commitment
to our communities, especially those of us with diverse districts,
that we will uplift all Ohioans and leave no one behind.
Results matter, so let’s work together. Subscribe and follow me on social
media for updates.

State investment
needed to fight hunger
As our elected lawmakers work out
Ohio’s next two-year budget, they are considering
cutting funding to pantries and
food banks helping our hungry neighbors.
Real Ohioans are struggling and now is not
the time to cut state support for food banks
and take meals off people’s tables.
The need for food assistance in Mid-Ohio
Food Collective’s 20-county service area —
including Franklin and Madison counties —
rose by 38 percent from 2022 to 2024. Last
year was the busiest ever in our 45-year history.
How can that be? Simply put, we are
still living with the economy of the past few
years. Wages rose after the pandemic, but
voters are still dealing with inflation. Rent,
utilities, and medicine cost more. The prices
of groceries, eggs, and meat have gone up.
We hope things will improve soon, but we
know families are hurting now.
In the face of all those challenges,
Ohioans are working harder than ever. We
meet caregivers every day who are working
full-time. Many have multiple jobs. And for
seniors, veterans, and disabled people,
working may not be an option. In 2024,
three out of four households we helped included
at least one child or senior.
Now is the time for Ohioans to look out
for each other, especially with the federal
government considering rolling back national
food programs. Please join me and
Ohio’s hunger relief network in asking our
state lawmakers to do their part and restore
support for the food banks that have our
neighbors’ backs.

Agrivoltaics: Bridging the Gap Between Agriculture and Renewable Energy
Agrivoltaics represents the future of farming
and solar, and the Oak Run Solar Project
is a prime example of its potential. With almost
a decade of experience in the agrivoltaics
industry, I have seen firsthand how
these projects have the potential to regenerate
farmland and revitalize farm families
across the United States.
As a farmer and USDA-NRCS Technical
Service Provider, I understand the economic
benefits agrivoltaics can bring to communities.
This innovative approach not only supports
crop production but also supports local
agricultural businesses and other local businesses.
By integrating solar energy with
agriculture, we can create stable income opportunities
for farmers while addressing energy
needs.
While large land developers may have the
financial resources to acquire vast tracts of
land, it is farmers who foster community connections
and feed and fuel our communities.
Support for agrivoltaics is crucial for spreading
awareness about how these initiatives
can positively impact farmers and rural communities.
The Oak Run Solar Project exemplifies
this vision, combining renewable energy production
with agricultural innovation. By supporting
the Oak Run Solar Projects and its
agrivoltaics initiatives, we can help this
farming community thrive while contributing
to meeting the growing energy demands
of this region.
