Combilift inspires future engineers
with STEM initiative
As part of the recent Engineers Week, Combilift opened its doors to local schools
in an initiative aimed at promoting STEM education and announced that the
Regional VEX Robotics Championships will be held at Combilift Headquarters,
with winners earning a chance to qualify for the World Championships
Combilift, a global leader in
innovative material-handling
solutions, is dedicated to
supporting STEM education –
combining science, technology,
engineering and mathematics – which
nurtures the future workforce. By hosting
this event, the company aims to bridge
the gap between classroom learning
and industry applications, encouraging
students to explore careers in both
engineering and technology.
At the event, St. Macartan’s VEX Robotics
Team, winners of the 2025 North West
Regional Finals, presented their awardwinning
robot to over 250 students from
local schools and shared insights into the
process and skills involved in designing,
building and programming a robot. To
provide a full overview of the competitions,
a friendly match was held, highlighting
the excitement and complexities of
the high-calibre VEX competitions.
Brendan McAvera, a teacher at St.
Macartan’s College, said:
“I’m the computer science
teacher, and in 15 years
of teaching, this is probably
the best thing I’ve ever been
involved in. It really shows
the inspiration you can get
back from students when
they’re given a project to
complete. They put their
heart and soul into it, and
are reaping the rewards
having already won
three awards this year.”
Through interactive
demonstrations and
hands-on experiences, young learners
gained insight into the real-world
applications of STEM and the vital role
robotics play in modern industries.
Martin McVicar added: “By engaging
with these cutting-edge technologies,
students can develop skills specific to
robotics, hydraulics and programming,
as well as other vital skills such as teamwork,
strategy and problem-solving.
These abilities are essential for students’
curricula and are transferable to their
future careers in STEM,
including potential
apprenticeships
at Combilift or paths
in engineering.”
McVicar also emphasised:
“Listening to the skills these
students have developed,
it makes you proud. It feels
like you have a Formula One
team in front of you. When
looking at the different roles
each person plays and the
skills developed, these
abilities will serve them
well throughout their lives.”
Through initiatives like this, Combilift
continues to play a prominent role
in motivating young minds to think
innovatively and develop the skills
necessary for their futures. By investing
in the next generation of engineers,
Combilift is helping to shape a
brighter tomorrow for everyone.

Latest TDUK figures show rise in timber imports
– up for 2024
A stronger end to 2024 saw volumes of the main timber and panel product imports finish the year up by 0.5% compared
to 2023 – an increase of 45,000m3
Import volumes have steadily improved
since Q3 2022, with the final quarter
of 2024 showing volumes 13.1% higher
than the same period the year before.
However, it’s worth noting that Q4 2023
was the weakest fourth quarter by volume
since Q4 2012. The small overall volume
increase in timber and panel imports in
2024 was led by modest growth in softwood
imports, supported by small increases in the
volumes of plywood, OSB and engineered
wood products. The growth of these four
products outweighed the volume reductions
experienced by hardwood, particleboard
Timber import volumes ended
2024 on a high, 0.5% up on the
previous year’s figures
and MDF imports. Solid wood imports
for the year were 1.2% higher than in
2023, while imports of panel products
were 1.0% lower.
A significant trend in 2024 was the
shifting emphasis in sources of supply
for many timber and panel products.
While overall volumes from the top
five softwood-supplying countries
slightly declined – with only Latvia and
the Republic of Ireland growing by 7%
– there was good growth elsewhere.
Norway, Lithuania, Austria, France and
Canada all enjoyed higher volumes, and
the combined growth from all countries
outside of the top five in 2024 was an
impressive 26%.
The overall value of softwood imports
in 2024 was 1.5% higher than in 2023.
The value of planed softwood grew by
3%, and the value of sawn goods remained
the same. Whitewood values were 1.7%
lower in 2024, while redwood values rose
by 6.2%.
All hardwood imports in 2024 were
2.2%, or around 10,000m³, lower than in
2023. The main contributors to this decline
were the USA’s supply of temperate species
and Cameroon’s supply of tropical
hardwoods. These volume reductions
outweighed the higher volumes recorded
from France, Latvia, Estonia and Romania.
TDUK Head of Technical and Trade,
Nick Boulton, said: “It’s encouraging to
see that the gradual growth in timber
imports in Q4 contributed to achieving
higher import levels for 2024 as a whole.
However, this comes at the end of a twoyear
period where we’ve seen almost
no growth in the volume or value of the
main wood product groups.
“With rising log and logistics costs over
the same period, the impact on critical
areas within the supply chain is becoming
increasingly apparent. The construction
market as a whole continues to be
challenging, leaving a suspicion that the
small rise in imports reflected increased
stocks rather than consumption as we
closed 2024.”
The full TDUK timber and panel products
import report contains detailed information
on volumes across the sector, broken down
by timber type and supply country. TDUK

Construction products reform Green Paper
In this article, BWF Technical Director, Kevin Underwood,
explores the Government's Green Paper on construction
product reform, published in response to the Grenfell Tower
tragedy. The paper outlines key proposals aimed at
improving product safety, regulatory oversight and industry
accountability. These reforms are critical to ensuring
safer buildings and restoring public trust
The tragedy at Grenfell Tower
and two subsequent independent
reviews exposed significant
failures in the construction
products regulatory system.
These reviews also revealed institutional
shortcomings that allowed profit to take
precedence over safety.
The Green Paper, published by the
Ministry of Housing, Communities and
Local Government (MHCLG), supports
the Government’s response to the Grenfell
Inquiry. It sets out a range of proposals for
construction product reform, addressing
both the Inquiry’s recommendations and
those from the Independent Review of
Product Testing and Certification – the
Morrell-Day Review.
The Government’s objective is that
construction products must be safe for
their intended or reasonably foreseeable
use. Furthermore, users – including residents
and other stakeholders – must have
confidence in product safety and be able
to verify it through accessible, clear and
transparent information.
Maintaining consistency between
the UK regulatory framework and the
revised European Union requirements
will contribute to achieving this goal.
Expanding regulatory coverage to include
all construction products will help eliminate
unsafe materials from the market, thus
enhancing overall building quality and safety.
Proposals in the Green Paper set out how
testing and certification will be strengthened
and how regulators will be equipped with
enhanced powers and resources in order
to effectively enforce regulations. The
paper also makes clear that achieving
these necessary changes will require a
significant, long-term commitment from
both government and industry to build
confidence in a system that guarantees
safe products and their safe use.
The Grenfell Tower Inquiry revealed
significant failures by some manufacturers,
as well as weaknesses in the assurance
regime that governs product placement
and usage in buildings. Systems designed
to ensure that public safety failed. There
was insufficient focus on product safety,
limited regulatory
coverage, a lack of
competency and
transparency in key
institutions responsible
for testing and
certification, poor
product information and
inadequate enforcement.
KEY SECTORS
FOR REFORM
The Government has
identified five critical
sectors for delivering
its reform ambitions:
• Construction product
manufacturers;
• The construction
industry and supply
chains;
• The National Quality
Infrastructure;
• Regulators;
• The Government itself.
IMPLICATIONS FOR
MANUFACTURERS &
THE CONSTRUCTION
INDUSTRY
For manufacturers and the wider
construction sector, reforms will mean:
• Taking responsibility for ensuring that
products are safe as standard, from design
through to manufacture, testing and use.
• Adhering to clear and effective regulations
and guidance in addition to working with
regulators and institutions to ensure
compliance.
• Providing clear and honest product
information to support designers,
specifiers and installers.
• A fairer system, allowing firms that
prioritise safety to compete on a level
playing fields.
• A stable and consistent regulatory
framework that supports investment
and innovation.
REGULATING CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS
All construction products will be brought
within the scope of the regulatory regime,
and the Green Paper details how these
will be regulated. It explores options and
proposals to ensure that products are:
• Safe for their intended or reasonably
foreseeable use;
• Used safely;
• Manufactured and supplied responsibly.
the market, selected and installed.
These are summarised as follows:
A) Products not covered by a designated
standard or technical assessment:
A risk-based general safety requirement
would apply. Manufacturers or suppliers
must identify and mitigate any safety risks
associated with a product’s intended or
reasonably foreseeable use before placing
it on the market.
B) Products covered by a designated
standard or technical assessment:
Compliance with a designated standard or
technical assessment will remain mandatory.
Manufacturers must provide necessary
information to demonstrate compliance,
including affixing a conformity mark – e.g.
CE or UKCA. The Government is proposing
alignment with the revised European Union
Construction Products Regulation (EU-CPR,
EU 2024/3110), which introduces new
obligations for safety and installation
information.
C) Products classified as critical to safe
construction:
The Government proposes additional
measures, including ensuring that all
such products are covered by a national
or recognised standard, with requirements
to support safe installation.
In order to achieve these objectives,
the Green Paper proposes measures for
regulating how products are placed on
The BWF will be responding to the Green
Paper consultation on behalf of its members;

LIGNA 2025: Record-breaking exhibitor turnout
expected for 50th anniversary edition
As visitors gear up for LIGNA 2025, which takes place from 26–30 May, exhibitors and organisers are entering
the final stages of preparation
The strong exhibitor registration
numbers for LIGNA 2025 are
particularly encouraging – at time
of writing, 1,337 companies have
registered for the anniversary
edition of the world’s leading trade fair for
the woodworking and wood processing
industry. This surpasses the previous event’s
1,288 exhibitors in 2023. Traditionally,
two-thirds of these come from abroad,
with the remaining third based in Germany.
In terms of exhibition space, 112,772sq.m
is currently booked – 113,937sq.m in 2023
– which is an unexpectedly strong result
given the current economic climate.
“The LIGNA exhibitors are showing a very
strong presence this year for the 50th trade
show anniversary. In terms of exhibitor
numbers, we’ve exceeded those of the
previous event and are close to the 2023
figure for exhibition space. Given the general
economic environment and extremely tense
situation in the woodworking and wood
processing industry, this wasn’t something
we’d expected,” says Stephanie Wagner,
Head of LIGNA at Deutsche Messe.
“The 50th anniversary of LIGNA certainly
makes this edition special, but the
exceptionally high level of exhibitor interest
is truly overwhelming. Together with The
VDMA Woodworking Machinery Association,
we as organisers are thrilled for the industry,
which stands united and sends a clear signal
of commitment to LIGNA. We’re confident
that the product innovations and strong
motivation of all exhibitors will help drive the
industry’s turnaround while also positively
influencing visitors’ willingness to invest.”.
LIGNA.TRUCKSTOP
With LIGNA.TruckStop, a new format for
skilled trades in the southern outdoor area
– near Hall 12 and the expo roof – visitors
can experience something truly unique.
Five companies from the skilled trades sector
will showcase their products – from power
tools to fittings and fastening technologies
–directly from show trucks, engaging with
the audience on-site. Participating exhibitors
include well-known names such as Festool,
Hettich, Makita, SawStop and Swiss Krono.
“At Hettich, customer centricity is not just
a marketing phrase, it’s the foundation of
an active partnership. ‘We are coming to
you’ is the motto of the ‘Hettich on Tour’
roadshow, which kicks off in mid-March and
runs through the DACH and Benelux regions
until the end of 2025. For the first time, the
tour will make a stop at LIGNA 2025 as part
of the ‘LIGNA.TruckStop’,” says Kathrin Jacobi,
Project Manager at Hettich Marketing
and Vertriebs GmbH & Co. KG.
“At SawStop, safety and precision are
at the core of everything we do. LIGNA.
TruckStop provides a unique opportunity
to showcase our industry-leading AIM (Active
Injury Mitigation) safety technology directly
to skilled tradespeople, offering hands-on
demonstrations in a dynamic, roadshowstyle
setting,” says Daan ter Haar, Head
of Marketing at SawStop Europe.
“Our participation in LIGNA.TruckStop
underscores a commitment to sustainable
production and advanced wood-based
materials. With our show module, we’re
presenting practical solutions that align
perfectly with the focus topics of ‘Engineered
Wood’ and environmental responsibility,”
says Carolin Steigemann, Application
Engineer at Swiss Krono Tex.
“We planned the premiere of LIGNA.
TruckStop with a total of six show trucks,
plus a stage and catering area. We’re now
close to reaching that goal and are very
pleased,” says Stephanie Wagner. “The action
stage will feature expert interviews and
hands-on knowledge-sharing sessions from
midday. Also, our ‘Happy Hour’ from 5-6pm
offers a great opportunity for networking
and socialising and serves as an attractive
new program element at LIGNA, specifically
tailored to joiners, carpenters, interior fitters
and assembly company employees.”
LIGNA.CIRCULAR
‘Thinking in circles’ is the motto of the
second new format, LIGNA.Circular. It’ll
be part of the LIGNA.Stage program in
Hall 12, realised in collaboration with
CADEMI. Six themed islands will highlight
different aspects
of circular value
creation across
various industries
throughout the trade
show week. The focus
will be on sustainable
innovations in
processes, materials
and products. Future
cooperation within
the industry and the
transformation of
business models will
be discussed under
the key themes of cooperation, innovation,
servitisation and transformation.
“At LIGNA.Circular, Fachagentur
Nachwachsende Rohstoffe is adding an
exciting focus with the topic ‘Material flows
of wood.’ Our goal is to highlight current
developments in the supply and use of
wood, while also emphasising important
research activities in the field of efficient
wood usage within the circular economy
framework,” states Dr. Andreas Schütte,
Managing Director at Fachagentur
Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e. V.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Wood
Research (WKI) and the Association of
the German Wood-Based Panel Industry
(VHI) will focus on ‘Circularity in woodbased
materials’. The Timber Construction

“hagebau Holzhandel is part of LIGNA.
Circular because we’re convinced that
sustainability requires cooperation.
Through our campaign for energy-efficient
refurbishment, we bring theory and practice
together and rely on the timber trade as
an industry driver and educator – from
certification and subsidy advice to innovative
product solutions. The future of construction
is circular, and we support professionals
as well as non-professionals in successfully
shaping this transformation,” says Andreas

More space & higher productivity: OHRA supplies
cantilever & panel racks for ‘Your Carpentry’
With nearly 7m high cantilever racks, Ihre Zimmerei – ‘Your Carpentry’ – has multiplied its storage area ninefold
at the new Metzingen headquarters. The OHRA shelving system was customised to meet the carpentry firm’s
specific requirements in terms of dimensions, fittings and surface coating
Equipped with mesh shelves
and arm bridges, the racks
provide flexible storage for
a wide range of items and
pallet formats. Additional
vertical racks allow for space-saving,
upright storage of panels in various
dimensions. These shelving systems
have significantly increased storage
capacity while keeping aisles clear of
materials and obstructions – directly
improving Ihre Zimmerei’s productivity.
FROM START-UP TO ENTREPRENEUR
OF THE YEAR IN JUST 13 YEARS
Founded in 2011, Ihre Zimmerei has grown
into one of the largest carpentry businesses
in the Reutlingen region, generating over
€2.5 million in
annual revenue.
In 2024, company
founders Joscha
Hohnberg and
Mario Müller
were named
Entrepreneurs
of the Year in
the Reutlingen
Region within
the Strategy
and Marketing
category. Due
to the business’
rapid growth,
moving to a
larger facility
in Metzingen
was therefore
necessary.
Alongside expanded workshop
and production facilities, the
warehouse was enlarged to
further increase productivity.
STORAGE CAPACITY
INCREASED NINEFOLD
The new warehouse features
a hot-dip galvanised cantilever
rack, measuring nearly 16m
long, for outdoor use. Indoors,
a 15m long and 3m long
cantilever rack were installed.
The 7m high cantilever racks
provide far more storage than
the floor-based system and smaller
racks used at the previous location.
The racks’ cantilever arms, capable
of holding up to 1,000kg, were partially
equipped with mesh shelves and arm
bridges, allowing for flexible storage of
various types of wood, consignment items
and pallet formats. The freely suspended
arms also enable flexible height adjustments
for individual storage levels.
To accommodate different panel sizes,
two additional vertical racks were installed,
providing quick and easy access to materials.
All interior shelves were powder-coated
in an anthracite gray (RAL 7016) at Ihre
Zimmerei’s request, enhancing
both durability and aesthetics.
Beyond the technical advantages –
such as high load capacity and robust,
long-lasting construction – Ihre Zimmerei
was particularly impressed by OHRA’s quick
proposal preparation, expert consultation
and customised planning. Each shelving
unit was tailored to current needs while
allowing for future adjustments. The
fast and cost-effective installation by an
OHRA partner also left a lasting positive
impression on the carpentry firm.

Precision & innovation: Outdoor Play UK adopts
HOMAG’s 5-axis CNC
Outdoor Play UK, a specialist in designing and manufacturing bespoke wooden playground equipment, is behind some
of the most engaging, safe and beautifully crafted play spaces across the UK. Their work enhances children’s experiences
through natural materials and outdoor environments – both proven to benefit mental and physical development
Initially, Outdoor Play UK worked
with a 3-axis CNC machine to develop
its range of products; however, as
demand grew and designs became
more complex, the company realised
the need for a more advanced solution.
“We were looking for the next step
forward,” explained Charlie, Workshop
Manager at Outdoor Play UK. “A more
capable machine would allow us to develop
our products even further. That’s when
we decided to go for a 5-axis CNC.”
CHOOSING HOMAG
The decision to invest in HOMAG was
influenced by industry recommendations
and thorough research. “A neighbouring
business that specialises in kitchens spoke
very highly of HOMAG,” Charlie said. “We
were considering another brand, and it was a
close call. But ultimately, HOMAG came back
with a strong offer – and it was actually the
machine our manager originally wanted.”
To ensure they were making the right
investment, the team visited HOMAG’s Castle
Donington showroom, where they saw the
CENTATEQ P-310 in action. “The build quality
really stood out,” Charlie noted. “One of our
biggest requirements was the
ability to clamp and machine
round poles in-house – something
we hadn’t been able to do
previously. HOMAG took the
time to test this for us, sending
videos and photos of the process,
which gave us confidence in
the machine’s capabilities.”
SEAMLESS INSTALLATION
& TRAINING
The implementation of the
CENTATEQ P-310 was carefully
planned to minimise disruption.
“Installation was excellent,”
Charlie recalled. “There were
some logistical challenges with
our site layout, but HOMAG
worked closely with us and
came up with a great solution.
“The installation took four days,
with minimal disruption. This was
followed by five days of on-site
training – HOMAG does a great
job of ensuring you’re comfortable
with the machine. As a result,
the transition was very smooth.”
A more advanced 5-axis CNC
was required to allow the
company’s range of product
offerings to expand and develop
The HOMAG CENTATEQ
P-31 once installed
within Outdoor Play
UK’s workshop
Outdoor Play UK specialises in
designing and manufacturing
bespoke wooden playground
equipment
Outdoor Play UK also invested in
HOMAG’s woodWOP software, along
with an additional CAM plugin for 3D
modelling. While the transition to the
new software had a learning curve,
HOMAG provided extensive support,
as Charlie explains: “We had some initial
difficulties transferring our bespoke
drawings to woodWOP, but HOMAG
went above and beyond, adapting our
designs to ensure compatibility. Their
willingness to help has been outstanding.”
THE CENTATEQ P-310’S IMPACT
Although still in the early stages
of using this new machine,
Outdoor Play UK is already
seeing improvements in
efficiency and accuracy.
“We’re getting to grips with
the 5-axis technology, and
further training has been
scheduled,” Charlie shared.
“But even using the CNC’s
base capabilities, we’ve
already noticed a big
difference. Tasks that were
previously done manually
– such as gluing timber for
larger workpieces – are now
handled much faster and
with greater precision.”
Looking ahead, the
company anticipates
significant benefits in
production capacity and
product quality. “We’re
excited to see where
this machine will take
us when used to
its full potential.”
IN SAFE HANDS
“This was a major
investment for us,”
reflects Charlie,
“so naturally, we
were apprehensive. One of our biggest
concerns was whether we’d have the
backup and support needed to manage
a machine of this calibre. However,
HOMAG has truly lived up to its
reputation for outstanding service…
which is to say, we needn’t have worried.”
Charlie concludes: “We couldn’t be
happier with our decision to choose
HOMAG. The machine, the support and
service have all been second to none.”

demonstration of HOMAG machinery and
software, contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK

WEINIG MACHINERY FAQs:
Counter profiles & your Powermat
Sometimes, a standard flat pressure pad after a top horizontal head cannot securely
hold a profile against the fence due to its shape, which leads to compromised quality
The solution is a counter profile
shoe to hold it in position;
however, producing a counter
profile can be a lengthy and
costly process, often avoided
when possible.
Q: WHEN SHOULD A COUNTER PROFILE
BE USED?
A: There are two common scenarios for
this: 1) When the profile’s shape makes it
unstable as it feeds through the moulder;
2) When producing profiles in multiples
– counter profiles help control the split
profiles, reducing movement during the
splitting process.
Q: HOW ARE COUNTER PROFILES
TRADITIONALLY MADE?
A: Traditionally, the process involves:
1. Creating a mirrored template
of the profile to be produced.
2. Grinding a pair of cutters
to match this profile.
3. Running a few lengths of
hardwood through the moulder.
4. Cutting the hardwood to the
required length for the counter profile.
5. Attaching it to the steel counter
profile pad on the moulder.
The overall process is time-consuming
and costly in terms of material and lost
production time.
Q: HOW CAN THIS PROCESS BE
MADE FASTER & MORE EFFICIENT?
A: Weinig UK has developed a more
cost-effective solution – 3D-printed
counter profiles. After extensive testing,
the company now offers tough, accurate
and easy-to-use 3D-printed counter profiles,
fully prepared for attachment to the
pressure element on a Powermat moulder.
Simply email a CAD drawing of the profile,
and Weinig UK will handle the rest for a
fixed cost. They’ve invested in CAD software,
a post-processor and 3D printer, so why
not give it a try?
Q: WILL USING A COUNTER PROFILE
IMPROVE QUALITY?
A: Yes. Counter profiles prevent profiles
from shifting inside the machine, ensuring
greater accuracy and consistency.
Q: DOES A COUNTER PROFILE ALWAYS
MIRROR THE PROFILE BEING PRODUCED?
A: Not necessarily. Completely mirroring the
profile increases friction, making it harder
for the feed system to function efficiently.
Instead, the goal is to apply sufficient
pressure at key points to hold the profile
in position while minimising resistance.
A good example is when producing dowels
in multiples, where the counter profile
supports without excessive friction.
Q: WHAT MATERIAL IS THE 3D-PRINTED
COUNTER PROFILE MADE FROM?
A: Weinig UK uses carbon-reinforced nylon,
which combines the strength of carbon fibre
additives with the toughness and durability
of nylon. This minimises friction, making it
the most suitable 3D printing material for
this application.
Q: HOW LONG IS IT EXPECTED TO LAST?
A: Assuming no mechanical damage, the
counter profile should last for thousands
of metres while maintaining accuracy.
If a replacement is needed, simply print
another one! Just be careful when handling
it as threaded inserts are included in the
polymer, so avoid overtightening.
