City council hears

enterprise budget

Preliminary budgets

ready for April 7

BY ERIC SANDBULTE

ESANDBULTE@NWESTIOWA.COM

The Sioux Center City

Council reviewed the preliminary

budget for the city’s

enterprise funds for the

upcoming 2025-26 fiscal year.

The city’s enterprise funds

cover city utilities — in other

words, its electric, gas, water

and sewer departments — as

we l as Centre Ma l.

Enterprise funds operate

primarily from revenue generated

from customers paying

for the services provided.

Overa l, each utility co lects

enough revenue from its customers

to cover its expenses

without using TIF revenue.

Although the ma l is also an

enterprise fund, it continues

to require subsidies from

TIF to pay internal debt and

a subsidy from the general

fund to cover a portion of the

operations expenses.

For electric, Ten Pas is

budgeting $10,857,130 coming

in from customers. This

is a jump from the projected

$10,556,200 for the ongoing

fiscal year, a byproduct of a

rate increase that went into

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

here’s a new way

to manage your

subscription to this

newspaper.

Iowa Information

Media Group converted

to a more robust circulation

software late last

year. Among the features

of this software is the ability

for readers to create

an online account where

they can renew a subscription,

change their

mailing address, request

change of delivery to a

seasonal address, put a

temporary stop on their

subscription and sign up

for e-editions.

E-editions are a new

value-added item for

our subscribers. While

we remain dedicated

to print editions of the

newspaper, e-editions fi l

a critical role for readers

outside the state of Iowa

and can give local readers

access to the paper earlier

than when your print edition

might be delivered.

Ever-increasing postage

rates may make it

fisca ly irresponsible for

us to mail physical copies

outside primary coverage

A single newspaper

mailed to a location in

Arizona, for example, can

cost upward of $5 per

week for postage alone.

Out-of-area subscription

rates would have to quadruple

to cover that cost.

Timely delivery also is

not possible to these outlying

areas as some current

subscribers receive

their papers two weeks

after the publication date.

We want to assure you

that creating an online

account and entering

your e-mail address is

secure. When you set up

your account, you also

wi l set a password. If you

forget that password or

desire to make a change,

the system wi l send an

e-mail and secure reset

link to the address you

have on file.

Credit card information

is not stored loca ly, and

we do not have access to

your card. We wi l not se l

your address or profile

information to any third

Iowa Information wi l

$637,045, a slight dip from

the projected $643,565 for the

ongoing fiscal year.

The total amount of expenditures

being budgeted for

the next fiscal year comes

to $11,563,300. Expenses

include $8.3 mi lion to go

toward the purchase of

electricity fo resale. Other

expenses include $838,450

for labor costs and $525,900

for transfers to the general

fund. Depreciation is counted

as an expenditure as we l,

amounting to $532,200.

Comparing revenue to

expenses, there is a net loss of

$69,125.

Electric is projected to start

the year with a beginning

cash balance of $1,950,383

and end with a cash balance

of $2,760,958.

Ten Pa said that although

the comparison of revenues

and expenditures alone

looks like a loss, part of that

is because the city factors in

depreciation of certain assets,

which is no the same thing

as a cash loss.
