Welcome to the Spring Arts & Culture Issue of VIVA NOLA
Magazine! This edition is particularly special as it celebrates
the vibrant Latine arts scene in New Orleans, with a focus on
artists dedicated to preserving their rich cultural heritage. This
issue is made possible in part by a generous grant from the
New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, an organization
we deeply admire for its commitment to supporting and
showcasing the diverse cultural tapestry of our city.
We invite you to immerse yourself in these pages and discover
the incredible depth and diversity of Latine artistry in New
Orleans. And as you read, we encourage you to seek out these
musicians and performers in person. During all the festivals
and throughout the year, you’ll find them sharing their gifts and
keeping the spirit of their culture alive.
Thank you for joining us on this journey of discovery and
celebration. We hope this issue inspires you to appreciate
and support the Latine artists who make New Orleans such

Festival Season in New Orleans

New Orleans kicked off 2025
with an unexpected snowfall
and a major football event,
setting the stage for a year of
resilience and celebration. Amid
economic uncertainty, the city
continues to adapt, embracing the
growing role of AI in business and
navigating shifts in financial policies
and unpredictable weather events.
The snowfall briefly disrupted
businesses but offered a collective
moment of pause. The city quickly
recovered, offering world-class
hospitality during a major sporting
event. However, not all businesses
saw the expected gains, highlighting
the importance of strategic
partnerships and supplier diversity
initiatives to ensure economic benefits
reach the broader community.
The Festival Capital of the World
New Orleans hosts over 130 festivals
annually, spanning food, music,
culture, and art. From Jazz Fest and
French Quarter Fest to community
celebrations like the Que Pasa Festival,
these events are more than
entertainment—they’re essential to
the city’s identity and economy.
Festivals fuel small businesses,
drive real estate investments,
and support local entrepreneurs.
Boutique hotels like Copper Vine
Inn, Black Bird Hotel, and Hotel
Perle have become key players,
demonstrating their dynamism
during events like Taylor Swift’s tour
stop and the Super Bowl, offering
unique experiences and attracting
high-profile visitors.
For food entrepreneurs, festivals
provide a crucial platform to showcase
new concepts and boost
revenue. Local nonprofit commissary
kitchen/incubator Codey’s
NOLA has taken the lead in preparing
entrepreneurs for success,
offering training in licensing, food
safety, and relationship-building.
Founder Sinnidra emphasizes the
importance of being festival-ready,
fostering relationships with civic
leadership and bridging the gap
between small business owners
and city officials.
This year, the PCA Trade Show
2025 will coincide with French
Quarter Fest, bringing the most
important cigar fair to the Convention
Center. The Consulate
of the Dominican Republic, in
collaboration with Dominican rum
and tobacco companies and the
New Orleans Jazz Museum, will
host a Cigar Master Class on April
13, showcasing how strategic
collaborations promote historical
and cultural exchange, as well as
economic growth.
With festival costs high but returns
significant, these events remain a
vital investment for small businesses.
As New Orleans enters
another vibrant festival season, the
city continues to lead in innovation,
economic growth, and cultural celebration—proving
why it remains

MARIACHI JALISCO REPRESENTING MÉXICO DURING JAZZ FEST PRESS PARTY

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is set to transform
into a vibrant celebration of Mexican music and culture in 2025.
The Expedia Cultural Exchange Pavilion will be the heart of this
cultural immersion, showcasing the richness and diversity of Mexico’s
artistic heritage.
Headlining the festival’s tribute to Mexico are musical powerhouses
Santana, chart-topping Banda MS, and Grammy winner Lila Downs.
They will be joined by nineteen bands from both Mexico and the United
States, creating a dynamic cross-border musical experience.
Festival-goers can expect a diverse array of Mexican sounds. Son de
Madera will bring their string-driven Son Jarocho from Veracruz, while
Las Hermanas García and Mixanteña de Santa Cecilia will showcase
the traditions of Guerrero and the Afro-Mexican rhythms of the Pacific
coast. Pasatono Orquesta will reinvent the sounds of Oaxacan village
bands, and Marimba Nandayapa will present the traditional marimba
music of Chiapas. From Guadalajara, Son del Coamil will offer traditional
Mariachi, contrasting with the horn-driven Mariachi Los Camperos
from Los Angeles. Son Rompe Pera will return with their cumbia punk,
and the Mexican Institute of Sound will highlight the Mexican electronica
movement. U.S.-based bands like La Santa Cecilia, El Conjunto Nueva
Ola, Alejandro Escovedo, Los Texmaniacs, La Insistencia Norteña,
and “El Dusty” will also showcase their Mexican roots.
Beyond the music, the festival will come alive with Mexico’s dynamic
street culture. Parades featuring Matlachines Los Venados from
Aguascalientes and a Oaxaca-style calenda will fill the Fair Grounds
with color and energy. Inside the Cultural Exchange Village, visitors can
enjoy live music, relax with authentic Mexican cuisine and mezcal cocktails,
and experience craft demonstrations in the Cultural Exchange
Demonstration Tent.
The demonstration tent will offer an immersive look into Mexican
traditions. Visitors can explore Son Jarocho culture with print-making,
guitar-making, and impromptu jam sessions. Artists from Oaxaca will
demonstrate alebrijes-making, weaving, and mural painting. Artists
from Uriangato, Guanajuato, will create intricate tapetes from dyed
sand and seeds. Other demonstrations will include basket weaving,
Mojiganga puppets, papel picado, and Otomi embroidery.
Jazz Fest 2025 promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Mexico’s
rich and diverse culture.

artística de México.
Encabezando el homenaje del
festival a México están los potentes
musicales Santana, la exitosa Banda
MS y la ganadora del Grammy Lila
Downs. Se unirán a ellos diecinueve
bandas tanto de México como de los
Estados Unidos, creando una dinámica
experiencia musical transfronteriza.
Los asistentes al festival pueden
esperar una diversa variedad de
sonidos mexicanos. Son de Madera
traerá su Son Jarocho impulsado por
cuerdas desde Veracruz, mientras que
Las Hermanas García y Mixanteña de
Santa Cecilia mostrarán las tradiciones
de Guerrero y los ritmos afromexicanos

Grounds de color y energía. Dentro
del Pueblo de Intercambio Cultural, los
visitantes podrán disfrutar de música
en vivo, relajarse con auténtica cocina
mexicana y cócteles de mezcal, y
experimentar demostraciones de
artesanía en la Carpa de Demostración
de Intercambio Cultural.
La carpa de demostración ofrecerá
una mirada inmersiva a las tradiciones
mexicanas. Los visitantes podrán
explorar la cultura del Son Jarocho con
la impresión, la fabricación de guitarras
y las sesiones de improvisación.
Artistas de Oaxaca demostrarán la
elaboración de alebrijes, el tejido y la
pintura mural. Artistas de Uriangato,
Guanajuato, crearán intrincados
tapetes de arena y semillas teñidas.
Otras demostraciones incluirán la
cestería, los títeres de Mojiganga, el
papel picado y el bordado Otomí.
El Jazz Fest 2025 promete ser una

I’m a native of Louisiana, originally from Chalmette. After
Hurricane Katrina, I moved to Baton Rouge and have been
here ever since. I attended Louisiana State University
(LSU) for my bachelor’s degree in communication studies,
paired with minors in both Spanish and Political Science.
My mother’s family is from Nicaragua, which resulted in
me being bilingual in both Spanish and English.
2. If you could name one thing the commercial
insurance industry could improve on, what would
it be?
The simplification and transparency of policy terms and
conditions would be an area the commercial insurance
industry could improve on. By simplifying language,
providing clear explanations, and enhancing transparency,
insurers can improve customer satisfaction and trust,
making it easier for businesses to make informed
decisions about their insurance needs.
3. Why should people do business with you?
I care about anyone I work with and strive to ensure my
clients are getting top-tier service paired with cost-effective
plans that make sense for their organization. My clients
aren’t just a number here, but rather a part of my career.
Some people say business isn’t personal, but I disagree! I
feel that business is absolutely personal.

Soy nativa de Luisiana y soy oriunda de Chalmette. Luego del
huracán Katrina, me relocalicé a Baton Rouge. Llevo viviendo en
Baton Rouge desde entonces. Asistí a la Universidad Estatal de
Luisiana (LSU), donde adquirí mi bachillerato en estudios de
comunicación, junto con dos grados especializados en español y
ciencias políticas. La familia de mi madre es de Nicaragua, lo que
resultó de gran ayuda para poder convertirme en agente bilingüe,
dominando el inglés y el español.
2. Si pudiera nombrar algo en lo que la industria de seguros
comerciales pudiera mejorar, ¿cuál sería?
Las condiciones de las pólizas sería un área en la que la industria
de seguros comerciales podría mejorar. Sería de gran ayuda
trabajar en la simplificación y transparencia de los términos. Al
simplificar el lenguaje, y brindar una explicación clara, mejoraría
grandemente la confianza y la satisfacción completa del cliente.
Así las empresas pudieran tomar mejores decisiones, y estarían
mejor informados sobre sus necesidades como asegurados.
3. ¿Por qué la gente debería hacer negocios con usted?
Me preocupo por todas las personas con las que trabajo y me
esfuerzo por garantizar que mis clientes reciban un servicio de
excelencia, junto con planes rentables que tengan sentido para su
empresa. Mis clientes aquí no son sólo un número, sino parte de mi
carrera. Algunas personas dicen que los negocios no deben
mezclarse con lo personal. Yo no estoy de acuerdo. Me refiero a

Their journey, spanning over three decades, is a testament to their
passion, dedication, and the power of music to connect people.

Patrice Fisher and Carlos Valladares are
a dynamic duo whose lives and careers
have been dedicated to promoting Latin
American culture and music, particularly harp
music, in New Orleans and beyond. Their
journey, spanning over three decades, is a
testament to their passion, dedication, and the
power of music to connect people.
Carlos Valladares, producer of the series
“Ecos Latinos” since 1993, has long been
committed to showcasing the rich tapestry of
Latin American culture. His mission is to bridge
the gap between Latin America and New
Orleans, creating a positive space for cultural
exchange. His wife, Patrice Fisher, a musician,
composer, and native of New Orleans, shares
this vision. Patrice’s musical education has been
shaped by her interactions with musicians from
Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil, and many others.
This diverse influence has enriched her artistry
and deepened her appreciation for different
musical traditions.
Their story began in New Orleans when
Carlos, who was accompanying a friend to
the Jazz Festival, met Patrice. Carlos, originally
from Guatemala, was in the United States on
a work visa. Their meeting blossomed into
a relationship, leading to 36 years together,
marriage, and a shared life dedicated to music
and cultural promotion. Carlos considers being
in New Orleans a blessing, an opportunity to
share his heritage and collaborate with others.
For Patrice, music has been an integral part of
her life since childhood. She holds a degree in
Music from Tulane University and has 50 years
of professional musical experience. She has
spent most of her life in New Orleans, immersed
in its vibrant musical scene.
In 1988, Carlos and Patrice began working
together, and in 1993, they launched “Ecos
Latinos,” a series that fulfills Carlos’s dream of
presenting Latin art and culture in a positive,
family-friendly environment. They recognized
the need to showcase the diversity and
richness of Latin American culture, countering
negative stereotypes. “Ecos Latinos” serves as
a platform to educate and enlighten audiences
about the beauty and depth of their heritage.
Their work extends beyond television. They
bring guest artists to schools, senior centers,
hospitals, and festivals, creating educational
and engaging experiences. As composers, they
aim to present their original work and support
other musicians in the Latin jazz genre.
A significant part of their cultural initiatives
involves harp music. For over 21 years, they
have had a harp teaching and manufacturing
project in Guatemala, which they expanded to
Cuba and Honduras. They recently returned
from Tegucigalpa, where they conducted
concerts and classes with local musicians and
students. This dedication to harp music reflects
their commitment to preserving and promoting
traditional art forms.
Carlos and Patrice’s work is supported by
various community partners, including the
French Market, the New Orleans Jazz and
Heritage Foundation, the New Orleans
Museum of Art, and the New Orleans Jazz
National Historical Park. These collaborations
enable them to reach a wider audience and
create meaningful cultural exchanges. They are
most proud of being part of the creative fabric of
New Orleans and contributing to its rich cultural
landscape. They value the opportunity to learn
from others and share their own traditions. Their
commitment to including local and international
musicians in their programs fosters growth,
learning, and cross-cultural understanding.
They have built a musical family across Latin
America, creating connections that enrich their
work and their lives.
In essence, Patrice Fisher and Carlos
Valladares are more than musicians; they are
cultural ambassadors. Their work exemplifies
the power of music to transcend borders, build
bridges, and celebrate the shared human
experience.

Patrice Fisher y Carlos Valladares son un dúo dinámico cuyas vidas
y carreras han estado dedicadas a promover la cultura y la música
latinoamericana, particularmente la música de arpa, en Nueva Orleans y
más allá. Su trayectoria, que abarca más de tres décadas, es un testimonio
de su pasión, dedicación y el poder de la música para conectar a las
personas.
Carlos Valladares, productor de la serie “Ecos Latinos” desde 1993, ha
estado comprometido durante mucho tiempo en mostrar el rico tapiz de
la cultura latinoamericana. Su misión es cerrar la brecha entre América
Latina y Nueva Orleans, creando un espacio positivo para el intercambio
cultural. Su esposa, Patrice Fisher, música, compositora y nativa de Nueva
Orleans, comparte esta visión. La educación musical de Patrice ha sido
moldeada por sus interacciones con músicos de Guatemala, México,
Brasil y muchos más. Esta diversa influencia ha enriquecido su arte y

Reconocieron la necesidad de mostrar la diversidad y riqueza de la cultura
latinoamericana, contrarrestando los estereotipos negativos. “Ecos
Latinos” sirve como una plataforma para educar e iluminar al público sobre
la belleza y la profundidad de su herencia. Su trabajo se extiende más allá
de la televisión. Llevan artistas invitados a escuelas, centros para personas
mayores, hospitales y festivales, creando experiencias educativas y
atractivas. Como compositores, su objetivo es presentar su trabajo
original y apoyar a otros músicos en el género del jazz latino.
Una parte importante de sus iniciativas culturales involucra la música de
arpa. Durante más de 21 años, han tenido un proyecto de enseñanza y
fabricación de arpas en Guatemala, que expandieron a Cuba y Honduras.
Recientemente regresaron de Tegucigalpa, donde realizaron conciertos
y clases con músicos y estudiantes locales. Esta dedicación a la música
de arpa refleja su compromiso de preservar y promover las formas de arte
tradicionales.

Preserving Cultural Heritage
Rachel Ornelas, the Cultural Heritage
Manager for the New Orleans Jazz
and Heritage Festival, has been an
integral part of the event since 2003. With a
background in recreation management and
extensive experience in festival organization,
she brings a unique perspective to her role,
focusing on presenting cultural traditions,
particularly Native American and folklife
traditions of Louisiana.
Ornelas’ connection to music and culture
runs deep. Hailing from Texas, her family is of
Mexican descent, and her father was a Tejano
musician, which significantly influenced
her passion for music and cultural preservation.
This upbringing led her to a career
dedicated to showcasing and celebrating
diverse traditions. As she notes, her father’s
influence “kind of dictates my life, essentially,
like I was living my whole life going to festivals
with him or going to concerts.”
At Jazz Fest, Ornelas is responsible for
working with “tradition bearers,” including
blacksmiths, basket weavers, and other
artisans who represent the rich cultural
heritage of Louisiana. She finds immense joy
in bringing these individuals to the festival,
providing them with a platform to share their
crafts and knowledge with a large audience.
She emphasizes that Jazz Fest is unique in
its dedication to presenting these cultural
aspects, setting it apart from many other
festivals. “To be able to present those people
and bring them to the festival is amazing,” she
states, highlighting her appreciation for the
work.

This year, Ornelas is also consulting for
the Cultural Exchange Pavilion, which is
spotlighting Mexico. She has been involved in
advising on the selection of musicians, artists,
and traditions to be showcased, highlighting
the vast and diverse culture of Mexico. She is
particularly excited about the music lineup, including
Lila Downs, Lisa Cecilia, and El Dusty,
as well as the art displays, such as Dia de Los
Muertos altars and papel picado artisans.
For Ornelas, Jazz Fest is more than just an
event; it’s a community and a family. She values
the long-standing relationships with crew
members and the sense of camaraderie that
has developed over the years. Her work at
Jazz Fest and her activism with the NALAC
organization are a testament to her dedication
to preserving and celebrating cultural
traditions, both within Louisiana and beyond.
She hopes that the Latino community will
come out to support the festival and enjoy
the cultural offerings, particularly the spotlight
on Mexico this year.

Jafet Perez, a passionate musician
originally from Santiago, the second
capital of the Dominican Republic,
has found a new home for his talent in the
vibrant streets of New Orleans. A drummer,
percussionist, and bassist, Jafet arrived
in the city in 2020, in the midst of the
pandemic, after losing everything in his
country. However, his resilient spirit and love
for music propelled him to rebuild his life
and career in this land of jazz and blues.
In the Dominican Republic, Jafet dedicated
himself entirely to music. For five years,
he worked for the Carnival Plus Line cruise
company, where he was part of the Latin
band. They played Latin shows every day
and spent up to nine months at sea. This
experience allowed him to travel and get to
know much of the Caribbean.
Upon arriving in New Orleans, Jafet faced
challenges. For two and a half years, he
stopped playing music and worked hard in
a restaurant, working up to 12 hours a day
washing dishes. He thought that forgetting
about music and dedicating himself to other
jobs would be the sacrifice he would make to
support his wife and three children. However,
his destiny was to return to his passion.
Through a mutual friend, he met Fermín
Ceballos, a Dominican musician living in New
Orleans. Fermín invited him to a birthday
party where Jafet played the tambora.
That night, Jafet also met Alexey Martí, a
Cuban musician who was impressed with
Jafet’s sound and invited him to play at an
event in a New Orleans hotel. There, Jafet
met Víctor Campbell and began to connect
with many other local musicians. That
event marked the beginning of his musical
career in New Orleans, as Jafet began to
play in numerous musical groups in the city,
returning to music, sharing his Dominican
rhythms and his talent with the world.
In a twist of fate, Jafet was invited to a
conversation with Ben Jaffe, creative
director of Preservation Hall. Without much
information, Jafet went to the appointment,
which resulted in an offer to become the
drummer of the iconic Preservation Hall
Jazz Band. This band, a pillar of traditional
New Orleans music, has welcomed Jafet and
his great Latin talent into one of the most
important institutions for the preservation
of jazz in New Orleans. “For me, it was a
dream I didn’t dream, that came true in an
incredible way, because my dream has always
been to play in a jazz band; to represent our
Latin culture with our rhythms, but also to
make other kinds of music, and it has been
an immense opportunity that they have
given me to be able to be in this great band
that is Preservation Jazz’”. His participation
with Preservation Hall not only highlights
his exceptional talent, but also underscores
the diverse and inclusive nature of the New
Orleans music scene. Jafet now brings the
rhythms of his native Dominican Republic to
the most prestigious stages, demonstrating
that music knows no borders and that
passion and dedication can overcome any
obstacle.

time with his family, and to compose and
produce his own songs and albums, as well
as producing for other artists who have

Jafet Pérez, un músico apasionado
originario de Santiago, la segunda
capital de la República Dominicana,
ha encontrado un nuevo hogar para su
talento en las vibrantes calles de Nueva
Orleans. Baterista, percusionista y
bajista, Jafet llegó a la ciudad en 2020,
en medio de la pandemia, después de
perderlo todo en su país. Sin embargo,
su espíritu resiliente y amor por la
música lo impulsaron a reconstruir su
vida y su carrera en esta tierra de jazz y
blues.
En la República Dominicana, Jafet se
dedicaba por completo a la música.
Durante cinco años, trabajó para
la compañía de cruceros Carnival,
donde formó parte de la banda latina
que tocaba todos los días y pasaban
hasta nueve meses en alta mar. Esta
experiencia le permitió viajar y conocer
gran parte del Caribe.
Al llegar a Nueva Orleans, Jafet enfrentó
desafíos. Durante dos años y medio, dejó
de tocar música y trabajó arduamente
en un restaurante, llegando a trabajar
12 horas al día fregando platos. Pensó
que olvidarse de la música y dedicarse a
realizar otros trabajos sería el sacrificio
que haría para sacar adelante a su
esposa y sus tres hijos. Sin embargo,
su destino era regresar a su pasión. A
través de un amigo en común, conoció a
Fermín Ceballos, un músico dominicano
que vive en Nueva Orleans. Fermín lo
invitó a un cumpleaños donde Jafet tocó
la tambora, lo que llamó la atención
de otro músico local, Alexey Martí.
Sorprendido por su talento, Martí lo invitó
a tocar en un evento en un hotel de New
Orleans donde conoció a Víctor Campbell y se
empezó a conectar con muchos otros músicos
locales. Ese evento marcó el comienzo de
su carrera musical en Nueva Orleans, pues
Jafet empezó a tocar en numerosos grupos

communities. Pedro Sandoval Chable,
known by his artist name “Damian Ch,” is
from Veracruz, Mexico, and is currently a
senior at Loyola University, studying Hip-Hop
and R&B. Also a graduate of Grace King
High School, Damian’s music is marked by
a variety of influences, including genres like
Reggaeton and Regional Mexican music.
Damian Ch has crafted a unique sound,
drawing inspiration from artists like Don
Omar, Bad Bunny, and producers such as
Tainy. A pivotal moment in his artistic journey
was the release of Feid’s album Inter Shibuya
La Mafia, which fueled his passion for music
and helped him find his artistic voice.

Oscar Gale, known as Toasta, represents the different cultural
influences that enrich today’s entertainment world. Born to a
Honduran mother and a Paraguayan father, Gale has always
stayed local not just by acting but also hosting events and owning
a small business in Jefferson Parish. His family’s roots trace
back to the heart of San Pedro Sula, specifically from the Barrio
de Las Acacias.
Initially, Gale’s passion for music remains a significant part of
his identity. However, a chance encounter with casting director
Tracy Kilpatrick changed his life forever. While hosting a Latin
Night in the city, Gale extended an invitation to Kilpatrick to recruit
talent for her upcoming project, Contraband, starring Mark
Wahlberg. To his surprise, she offered him an audition. Not sure
what to do at first, he eventually seized the opportunity, marking
the beginning of his acting career.
Since then, Gale has built an impressive resumé, featuring roles
in acclaimed films like Tammy and 22 Jump Street, as well as the
hit television series NCIS: New Orleans, amongst many more.
But his most recognized role was in the movie The Big Short,
which explores the events leading to the 2008 financial crisis
in the U.S. caused by the housing bubble and the subsequent
collapse of the mortgage market. The Huffpost stated, “The
most gripping scene in ‘The Big Short’ isn’t about rich, white
men,” referring to Gale portraying a father who lost his home
due to the crisis. His experience on set with Mark Wahlberg
during Contraband stands out as a memorable moment. Gale
recalls filming under freezing conditions, with a scene meant to
take place in the warmth of Colombia. Wahlberg’s friendly and
professional attitude made a strong impact on him, showing the
close connections that exist in the industry.
Perhaps one of the most touching highlights of Gale’s acting
journey was working alongside Paul Walker on the film, Hours.
Gale, who grew up admiring Walker in the Fast and Furious
franchise, found himself star-struck yet grounded during their
interactions. “He was super cool and humble,” Gale recalls,
reflecting on their casual conversations. The news of Walker’s
tragic passing deeply affected him. “When I heard he passed, I
was at my friend’s house. I got really emotional; it was a sad day
for so many of us.”
Recently, Gale made a splash with a Super Bowl commercial,
where he portrayed a Latino barber. Although he didn’t watch
the game live, the flurry of notifications that poured in after the
ad aired was overwhelming. “It was one of the first commercials
aired! My phone went off like crazy,” he says with excitement.
Currently, Gale is honing his craft as a barber while also working
on a podcast focused on men’s mental health. He urges aspiring
Latino actors from New Orleans not to let anyone diminish their
pride. “Whatever gives you that spark and drive, don’t lose it!”
Gale is a living testament to resilience, proving that with passion
and determination, dreams can come true, and one’s heritage
can be a source of strength and inspiration.

impactante en ‘The Big Short’ no se
trata de hombres ricos y blancos”
refiriéndose a Gale interpretando a un
padre que perdió su hogar debido a
la crisis. Su experiencia en el set con
Mark Wahlberg durante Contraband
se destaca como un momento
memorable. Gale recuerda filmar en
condiciones de congelamiento, con
una escena que se suponía estar
sucediendo en el calor de Colombia.
La actitud amigable y profesional de
Wahlberg tuvo un gran impacto en
él, mostrando que las conexiones
cercanas existen en la industria.
Quizás uno de los momentos más
emotivos en la carrera de Gale fue
trabajar junto a Paul Walker en la
película Horas Desesperadas. Gale,
que creció admirando a Walker en
la franquicia Rápido y Furioso, se
sintió asombrado y, a la vez, centrado
durante sus interacciones. “Era super
agradable y humilde,” recuerda
Gale, reflexionando sobre sus
conversaciones informales. La noticia
del trágico fallecimiento de Walker
lo afectó profundamente. “Cuando
escuché que había fallecido, estaba
en casa de un amigo. Me conmoví
mucho; fue un día triste para muchos
de nosotros.”
Recientemente, Gale causó gran
impacto con un comercial del Super
Bowl, donde interpretó a un barbero
latino. Aunque no vio el juego en vivo,
la avalancha de notificaciones que
llegó después de que se emitiera el
anuncio fue abrumadora. “¡Fue uno
de los primeros comerciales que se
emitieron! Mi teléfono sonó como
loco”, dice con emoción.
Actualmente, Gale está
perfeccionando su oficio como
barbero y también trabaja en un
pódcast centrado en la salud mental
de los hombres. Insta a los latinos
de Nueva Orleans que aspiran a ser
actores a que no dejen que nadie
disminuya su orgullo. “¡Lo que sea
que te dé esa chispa y motivación,
no lo pierdas!”

resiliencia, demostrando que con
pasión y determinación, los sueños

Kerbeline Elisa Hurtel is a Personal
Injury Pre Litigation Paralegal at The
Law Office of John W. Redmann.
Born in the U.S. to a Honduran mother and
Cuban father, she has been with the firm
for almost 6 years.
Kerbeline finds fulfillment in assisting
clients through the personal injury process
and being a resource for her coworkers.
She also values her firm’s volunteer work
with local Hispanic-owned businesses.
Outside of work, Kerbeline enjoys
spending time with her husband and
dogs, exploring her city, and supporting
Hispanic-owned businesses with her
friends.
As a Latina woman in a male-dominated
field, Kerbeline hopes to inspire other firstgeneration
women to overcome barriers
and believe in themselves. She started at
an entry-level position with no prior legal
field experience and learned multiple
departments while assisting clients and
coworkers.
Her advice for young Latinas interested
in the legal field is to “go for it! Apply for
the position and learn as much as you can
from everyone in the office.” Her favorite
phrase at work is “be a sponge and
absorb as much knowledge as possible!”
Kerbeline wishes to see more availability
of resources, empathy, and compassion
within the Hispanic community.

trabajo en el proceso. Por esto, su frase
favorita es “¡Sé una esponja y absorbe
la mayor cantidad de conocimiento
posible!”.
Su consejo para las jóvenes latinas
interesadas en el campo legal sería
“¡Adelante! Solicita el puesto y aprende
todo lo que puedas de todos en la
oficina”. Kerbeline desea ver más
disponibilidad de recursos, empatía
y compasión dentro de la comunidad
hispana.
