WELCOME TO BRISTOL PRIDE 2024
15 years! Can you believe it, look how we’ve grown! It’s been an incredible journey from
coming together in 2009 to make our 2010 festival in Castle Park happen, with just under
5000 people then with only a few hundred on the march. Now we work all year round and
welcome over 45,000 people across two weeks of events with an incredible 25,000 of you
marching with us last year. 15 years feels like a huge milestone and so much has happened
in those years! We’ve seen such positive steps for our community but we also continue to
fight for equality. With attacks on our community, in both hate crime and legislation, at the
moment, it’s a powerful reminder to never be complacent and how important Pride still is.
We can’t wait to welcome you to events this year, and you’ll see it’s another bumper year
of events across the 2 weeks of the festival and Pride Day. Cost of living is affecting us all
and we’ve worked hard to keep prices down as much as possible, and Pride day remains
donation entry but please, if you can, buy one of our supporter wristbands. Your support
keeps Pride happening and wristbands offer great rewards like free bus travel across Bristol
on Pride Day and money off bar prices at the festival. Do also make sure you get out and
support the LGBT+ venues and events over the Pride Fortnight.
Speaking of Pride Fortnight! We’re bringing you our first ever Queer Vision Film Festival
screening at the former Bristol IMAX, we even have our very own Priscilla to bring you to the
cinema in style! In another first we have our Pioneers of Pride Kiki Ball, in collaboration with
Bristol Ballroom Collective. We’ll be celebrating the rich history of the QTIBIPOC community
in Pride.
We also have some incredible theatre this year in the form of Wreckage which was a
standout show from last year's Edinburgh Fringe. We have another awe inspiring Circus
Night at Circomedia featuring some of the best LGBT+ circus performers.
On Pride Day we have our biggest ever line up with headliners Human League which we
couldn’t be more excited about. We are also welcoming Brizzle Boyz to the rebranded
Uplift Stage alongside PUNKA who are returning for a second year and both have curated
sensational line ups. OTR are taking the reins in the Youth Area, Bassline Circus and QAF
Cabaret have collaborated on our Circus Tent this year bringing you more spellbinding
LGBT+ circus, expect workshops as well as performances and a chance for little ones to get
involved in their own mini ball.
Lastly, in what we desperately hope is a general election year we want to take this
opportunity to remind you firstly to register to vote, and secondly to use your vote wisely, do
your research and find out who is going to stand up and protect your rights. Don’t forget you
need voter ID now too!
THANK YOU for supporting us over the last 15 years, and here's to 15 more! Happy Pride!
Eve, Daryn & The Bristol Pride Team

PEAFOWL
Family, love and living in true colour.
Myung is a transgender woman and dancer living in Seoul,
attempting to finance the cost of gender-affirming surgeries
from prize money winnings at Waacking competitions – a form
of vogueing. But with news of her estranged father's death, she
is drawn back to her rural home town to perform the necessary
memorial rites – a strictly gendered Sogo drum dance. As
pressure mounts to conform with the conditions laid out by her
father’s will, and traditional attitudes of the community, Myung
must learn to confront the past whilst staying true to herself.
An incendiary and dynamic South Korean drama of family, love,
and embodying one’s truest colour, this is a joyous, celebratory
(re)discovering of the self. Byun Sung-bin’s debut feature abounds
with compassion and a fiery creativity that elevates Peafowl from
your typical transition narrative. One not painted in miserabilist
black and white strokes, but a fully evocative spectrum of colour.

ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER
25th anniversary revisiting of this queer
international cinema landmark
No stranger to the dramedy, Pedro Almodóvar’s works possess
a sheen of disarming, soapy lightness, before abruptly plunging
the viewer into the deepest, soul-searching depths of humanity.
All About My Mother is true to form, broaching complex themes
of addiction, faith, gender identity, bereavement, and the AIDS
pandemic. Yet per its title dedication, a consistent, heartfelt ode
for womankind and motherhood in all its forms – with stirring,
career-defining performances from both Penelope Cruz and
Cecilia Roth.
Winner of the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language,
Academy Award for Best International Feature in 1999, and
six Goya awards: All About My Mother is – in many ways – the
quintessential Almodóvar film and an indisputable landmark of
queer cinema.
Queer Vision are delighted to be screening All About My Mother
for its 25th anniversary this year, bringing with it a rare opportunity
for audiences to revisit or discover this seminal film from the
Spanish auteur on the big screen.

The spirit of MTV and The Big Breakfast
lives on
Director and self-proclaimed “future award-winning filmmaker”
Amy Pennington dares to answer a question no one really asked
but presumably wanted to, in this hilarious yet heartwarming
send-up of British reality television. Portraying the show’s clueless,
awkward, and overly chummy host, Pennington embarks on
a nationwide odyssey, invading the lives and homes of four
unsuspecting trans people to find out the real T – what TOPS they
wanted to wear after TOP surgery.
A short but sweet feature, Pennington’s faux-documentary is an
illuminating, uninhibited one-of-a-kind feature that kindly observes
trans masculine experience, and will definitely put a big smile on
your face.

PREVIEW: ORLANDO, MY POLITICAL
BIOGRAPHY
Radical reinventions of this literary masterpiece
Since publication in 1928, Virginia Woolf’s iconic novel Orlando: A Biography has been subjected
to countless writings, interpreting its themes of queer and gender identity. The story of a young
nobleman whose life spans centuries, suddenly awaking one day as a woman, holds poetic
significance for trans+ communities worldwide. Paul B. Preciado’s documentary boosts the voices
of twenty-six trans and non-binary actors – each playing a variation on Orlando – challenging
contemporary political prejudices faced by those seeking gender-affirming care.
SECTION 28 AND ME
What was the impact of growing up under
section 28?
Section 28 and Me is a playful, honest and heartfelt portrait,
exploring queer stories on past invisibility and shame. In this new
show theatre maker Tom Marshman asks; "has the impact of
growing up within Section 28 legislation made him both a show off
and an oversharer?"
Digging deep into his psyche, drawing on personal reflections,
past performances, and his Dad's unique perspective, he
considers this period of forced silence.
Tom asked many queer communities; what is your Section 28
story? Gathering intergenerational voices, connecting history and
politics with the deeply personal, to celebrate the resilient and
unique LGBT+ community.
Section 28 was in place during 1988 - 2003, it was the legislation
that stopped schools mentioning queer life.

In late 2018, Kansas-born Sav Rodgers gave a TED talk in
New York about his affinity for Ben Affleck movies, with one in
particular that he became near-obsessed with: Kevin Smith’s 1997
rom-com Chasing Amy. Through this film, Rodgers saw queer
representation in film for the first time, which ultimately saved his
life.
Flash forward, and Sav is invited by director Kevin Smith to visit
his L.A. home, discuss the film, and begin shooting interviews that
would eventually become part of Chasing Chasing Amy. But
as he gets closer to the people who inspired him, he uncovers a
more troubling history behind the production of Smith’s film.
You don’t need to have seen Chasing Amy to appreciate
Rodgers’ film, but we’re delighted to provide our audience with
the option to preface the doc with the narrative that inspired it –
a very special double bill only at Queer Vision. Hosted by Harriet
Taylor, Producer of Queer Vision and SWITCH Trans+ film
programming.

You know what they say, thirty is the new twenty, and with this
iconic film that’s a tremendous cause for celebration. Priscilla
wears its age well, and is remarkably sensitive in its portrayal of
queer identities at a time when queer identities were still largely
shunned in the mainstream.
We’re delighted to present a 4K digitally remastered presentation
of Priscilla to the biggest screen Bristol has to offer - the
Former Bristol IMAX. We only hope it can contain the immense
personalities of drag queens Mitzi (Hugo Weaving), Bernadette
(Terence Stamp), and Felicia (Guy Pierce) on an unforgettable
road journey across the Australian Outback.
The icing on the cake of this 30th birthday bonanza – arrival
performances from the Bristol Show Choir plus Drag Icon,
Tess Drive, who’ll also be hosting a special trip on our very own
Priscilla: the Pride Bus with a limited number of tickets so you can
be picked up, and arrive at the IMAX in true camp style with a little

LOVE BOUND
From battling homophobia in China to
finding love in the UK
After calling out her university for its homophobic campus
environment, bullying from teachers and classmates, and the
prominent use of LGBT+ phobic textbooks, activist Qiuyan Chen
was catapulted into the spotlight of news headlines worldwide.
But this overnight fame also made her a target, as she was outed
by her university tutor, and subsequently forced into conversion
therapy by her parents. Fleeing to the UK, she met her partner
Bling. But when Bling has to return to China, the couple fight to the
ends of the earth to reunite.
Shanshan Chen’s incredible documentary Love Bound charts
Qiuyan’s personal journey against wider struggles faced by the
Chinese-speaking queer diaspora here in the UK; an urgent call
for better visibility and supportive action for these communities.
We are delighted to welcome both Shanshan and Qiuyan to
introduce the film and join a post-screening Q&A, hosted by

TEACHES OF PEACHES
“You know it, you love it, you got it, you want it”
Hailing from Ontario, born of the Berlin underground, Peaches’ cheekily provocative, sex-positive
music has electrified audiences worldwide for over twenty years.
Well-known for cult club banger ‘F*ck the Pain Away,’ this documentary-cum-concert film paints the
compelling portrait of a sensationally, singular queer music icon.
The film weaves together footage from her recent anniversary tour of the same name, archival
material, and interviews with collaborators and friends – including Chilly Gonzalez, Leslie Feist, and
Garbage’s Shirley Manson – into an absorbing, wild, and thoroughly entertaining whole.

INDIA’S 1ST BEST TRANS

WED 10 JULY

Filmed over the course of seven years, director Ila Mehrotra
charts the extraordinary journey of Rudrani Chetri and her friends,
who are part of Delhi’s transgender “Hijra” population. Whilst
traditional Hindu society recognises the ancient Hijra identity as a
legal ‘third sex’ – a community of holy hermaphrodites – this does
not mean acceptance…
Many, like Rudrani and her friends, are shunned by their families,
forced to live and work on the streets. They are seen to possess
and are sought for their spiritual powers; yet paradoxically, are
considered outcasts and remain segregated from mainstream
society. In search of acceptance, Rudrani creates and launches
India’s first trans modelling agency, consequently becoming
Delhi’s highest profile trans activist under the scrutiny of world
media.
This hopeful documentary full of laughter, drama, excitement, and
pathos, is a rare glimpse into the hidden world of the Hijra. From
Mehrotra’s own unwaveringly empathetic directorial viewpoint: we
immerse ourselves in unfamiliar places but find relatable stories
of love and loss, hope and poverty, beauty, glamour, and catwalk
glory.
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with Ila Mehtrotra,
hosted by writer, poet and journalist Jasmine Qureshi.

THE MILKMAN'S ON HIS WAY
In this lunchtime lecture, D-M Withers, Lecturer in Publishing at the University of Exeter and Director
of Lurid Editions, offers insights in the recent republishing of The Milkman’s on His Way - an important
chapter in gay cultural history.
One of the first young adult novels published in the UK to centre gay characters, written by awardwinning
author David Rees. Celebrated on its release in 1982 but by the late 80s attacked in
parliament for how it “glorified” homosexuality, declared “virtually pornographic” by the right-wing
media, and eventually suppressed under the shadow of Section 28.

PREVIEW: CLOSE TO YOU
Special preview screening of this highly
collaborative feature
Elliot Page returns to the big screen in this unassuming, gentle,
and sincerely heartfelt romantic drama. Close to You marks
his first fiction film since 2017’s Flatliners remake, and co-stars
Hillary Baack (Sound of Metal). Director Dominic Savage
granted Page and Baack carte blanche to improvise significantly
throughout the film; a naturalistic approach that allows the film to
be consistent with the authentic, everyday language used by trans
people and those in deaf/hard-of-hearing communities.
Close to You lingers in the realm of the personal, exploring
contentious family dynamics, feelings of loneliness, displacement,
and reconciling with the self. It feels profoundly threaded with
Page’s own experiences, and reflective of where he’s at entering
this new phase of his career.
We are thrilled Close to You will serve as our closing night film
at Queer Vision 2024, and can’t wait to hear your thoughts
during our post-screening discussion in the cafe/bar. This
very special preview will also feature descriptive subtitles and
BSL-interpretation for the introduction/discussion – hosted by
David Ellington in partnership with Deaf Conversations About

PRIDE PARADE MARCH
Be Loud, Be Proud, Be Visible
Join us for the Pride Parade March, as we come together as a
community to stand up and join together in a bold protest for
equality and diversity, to visibly celebrate and showcase our
community and show that hatred and prejudice has no place in
our city.
It’s an incredibly challenging time right now as we continue to see
increasing attacks on the LGBT+ community with hate crime levels
for some of our community at the highest they have ever been.
While progress has been made in the past, we continue to see
attacks on our hard fought rights from those that seek to divide
our community, eroding our collective power and our rights,
emboldened by a hostile government. We cannot be complacent
and have to keep fighting for equal rights, for all, ensuring nobody
is left behind.
Gather at the Bandstand end of Castle Park as we head through
the city centre and on to the Amphitheatre where our shuttle
buses depart for The Downs. The March is free for members of
the public to join, but all businesses, who are not already a Pride
Partner or Supporter, need to register and make a small financial
contribution to take part, to support us to make it happen. Head to
bristolpride.co.uk/parade for eligibility and to register.

SUSTAINABILITY AT PRIDE
Proud of our planet!
We’ve been working hard to make Pride as sustainable as possible for many years. We, like so many
of you, have been horrified by the increasing results of plastic in our oceans, the impact of climate
crisis and species endangerment. We all need to act now!
Last year we did our first carbon audit and the total measured emissions for the 2023 Event were
32.71 Tonnes of CO2 which is an average of just over 1.5kg of CO2 per attendee.
We didn’t get it perfect, there are some gaps in our data that we will try to fill this year, but we are
thrilled to have started this journey and are committed to reducing our environmental impact.
BUT we need your help. One of our biggest impacts is the thousands of people that attend
Pride. YOU.
You have a part to play to help reduce the impact on the environment and there’s several ways you
can help:
• Get to Pride using public transport (First Bus travel is free with your Supporter Wristband AND
we have a free shuttle bus from the end of the march) Tier e-scooters or bikes are a great option
for wizzing up park street and the train to Clifton Downs Station is only a 10min walk from the
festival site.
• Donate to Bristol based carbon offsetting charity, Energy Revolution Initiative when purchasing
your supporter wristband.
• Bring a reusable water bottle to refill onsite (let's stay hydrated when dancing).
• Avoid glitter, get creative with face paints or mineral shimmers instead.
• Planning a killer look? Raid the charity shops before you buy something new.
PLEASE DON’T LITTER
We have over 100 bins onsite with recycling facilities - use them!

We want to ensure Pride is accessible, open, and welcoming for all our attendees and we’re working
hard to develop and expand our accessibility measures.
In response to feedback we have moved our accessible parking to an area of grass just outside
the festival gates, this means that we no longer have to limit the number of vehicles we can
accommodate. With this the accessible entrance will be moving to the other side of the site, close
to the access car park and closer to the main gate. We’re also increasing the size of our Sensory
Calm Space due to how well used it was last year, and this year we will be putting radar locks on the
accessible toilets to ensure they are clean and free for use of disabled people - so make sure you
bring yours with you. We will have spares located at the viewing platforms and you will be able to hire
them for the day from the info tent.
As always, we have BSL interpreters on all our stages and a big screen for Main and Cabaret Stages
for visibility of our interpreters. Mobiloo are also onsite with an accessible toilet, adult-sized changing
bench, and hoist, as well as accessible toilets with radar locks located at all toilet blocks.
For more on our accessibility visit bristolpride.co.uk/accessibility and if you have any queries or
would like to talk to someone about your needs please email access@bristolpride.co.uk.
Our thanks to our Accessibility Partner.

A WORD WITH…
JAYNE GRAHAM -
MCMORROW
(SHE/HER)
As we mark our 15th Anniversary we take a
moment to chat with Jayne from the Bristol
Pride team. Initially a volunteer with a passion for
film she went on to grow and create an identity
for our Film offering and become a trustee for
the charity.
Introduce yourself!
Hi I’m Jayne, Chair of Trustees for Bristol Pride
and manager of the main stage. This festival
marks my 14th year volunteering for Bristol
Pride, where does the time go? I have a busy
family life with my wife Michelle, children,
grandchildren and our dog Bear. I work as a
Graphic Designer and recently ran a 5k race for
the first time, I don’t know what possessed me…
How did you first get started as a volunteer
for Bristol Pride?
I answered a general call out and mentioned
how I loved films. From that I started helping with
the film screenings in various locations around
the city in 2011. I packed up a suitcase on
wheels with programs, banners and tickets and
set up the front of house.
How have you seen Pride change over the
last 15 years?
Through huge amounts of hard work by many
volunteers, I have seen a small festival grow
and evolve without losing its heart. It became
a registered charity, supports performers and
artists and now has paid staff. The initiative of
the Pride Community Fund that supports groups
and events through grants for LGBTQ+ folk has
been a really important development.
What is the proudest contribution you feel
you have made to Pride?
Great question, it is creating Queer Vision
film festival. Developing this means we offer
opportunities to new and existing queer
filmmakers. A platform from which to tell and see
our stories, it fills my heart. Partnering with Iris
Prize was a validating moment, I am super proud
of my work that carries on with someone new at
the helm.
What is one of your favourite additions in
recent years to the festival?
The new sensory area within Pride Day. The
seed was planted through a conversation I had
with a person who’s sensitivities made it difficult
for them to attend. Creating a more inclusive
festival through this calm space is brilliant and I
am delighted the team could include it.
What has volunteering with Pride given you?
Initially it gave me a place to find positivity, over
the years it has given me the opportunity to be
positive. A place I could be creative and bring
my ideas into being. Contributing as part of a
team to support, celebrate and advocate for the
equality of LGBTQ+ communities has been a
great privilege.
What are your hopes for Bristol Pride's
future?
The continuation of representing, advocating
for and celebrating our beautiful and diverse
community. In quiet small ways, loud and
large ways and new ways. Striving to create
spaces and places that we can all feel seen and
validated as the amazing folk we all are.
