the city. Whether you’re exploring its picturesque old town or

enjoying Basel’s riverside charm, the city offers a lifestyle that

beautifully balances history, culture, and modern convenience.

Families, in particular, will find Basel an exceptional place to call

OUR TOP TIPS

• Stroll along the Rhine (Rhyy) and cross the

river with one of the four ferries (Fähri) —

Wild Maa, Leu, Vogel Gryff, or Ueli — using

only the natural power of the river’s current.

• Visit Basel Münster (Cathedral) and the

viewing terrace (Pfalz) behind the cathedral

• Marvel at City Hall (Rathaus) on Marktplatz

• Visit Spalenberg and Spalentor

• Stroll through the St. Alban district

• Experience Basel and the Rhine from a

different perspective aboard the ships

of Basler Personenschifffahrt.

A city

for you

A city where the past and present

coexist in perfect harmony. A city for

pleasure-seekers, for lovers of art,

architecture, and culture. A city for

singles, couples, and families. A city

that thrives on its diversity.

History

Basel’s roots go back over two millennia,

with the city evolving from a Celtic

settlement to a thriving Roman military

post. Its strategic location made it a hub of

trade and intellectual activity, particularly

after the University of Basel was founded

in 1460. This institution attracted great

thinkers and established Basel as a center

of humanism and book printing during the

Renaissance.

The city’s Old Town is a showcase of

architectural gems, reflecting its rich

2,000-year history. Visitors marvel at

treasures like the 800-year-old Romantic

and Gothic Cathedral (Münster), which

offers breathtaking views from its terrace

(Pfalz). The intricately designed City Hall

(Rathaus), with its striking red facade,

welcomes the public, while the wellpreserved

Spalentor stands as a reminder

of the city’s medieval fortifications.

Wander through the St. Alban district,

with its romantic waterways and

medieval mills, or follow the old city wall

for glimpses into Basel’s storied past.

Today, Basel remains a harmony of

historical landmarks and modern

infrastructure, a vibrant city where

history is preserved.

Culture

Basel is a cultural hotspot, celebrated for

its theatrical performances, high-class

ballets, concerts, and festivals. Theater

Basel, renowned for opera, dance, and

drama, has earned recognition across

Europe, including as “Opera House of

the Year”. Smaller theaters and intimate

venues like Bird’s Eye, one of Europe’s

most celebrated jazz clubs, add to the

city’s vibrant arts scene.

The city is home to almost 40 museums,

with spectacular collections and special

exhibits — unique in Switzerland and

internationally respected. With so much

art in Basel, you’re spoiled for choice.

Music lovers will revel in the range of

performances, from concerts at the

Stadtcasino Basel, the city’s most famous

concert hall, to live concerts in Kaserne

Basel, or the open-air musical festival

Floss, on a floating stage on the Rhine.

Basel also has a thriving cinema and

literary scene, with an open-air cinema

taking place every summer and numerous

authors and literature fans contributing to

Basel’s lively literature landscape.

Family life

in Basel_

Basel is a great city for families, with

countless attractions and activities

designed for children. The city’s excellent

public transportation system, compact

layout, and pedestrian- and strollerfriendly

streets make it easy to navigate.

Our year-round favorite is the Basel

Zoo, affectionately referred to as Zolli.

It features exotic animals, a vivarium,

a birdhouse, and fun playgrounds.

There are also plenty of child-friendly

museums that make for great family

outings. Families can visit interactive

museums such as the Museum Tinguely,

with its vibrant kinetic art and sensory

exhibits, or have a hands-on experience

at the Basel Paper Museum (Basler

Papiermühle), where children and adults

can try traditional papermaking and

explore bookbinding.

For nature enthusiasts, the Natural

History Museum (Naturhistorisches

Museum) offers life-sized dinosaurs

and engaging exhibits about extinct and

endangered species. The Toy Worlds

Museum (Spielzeug Welten Museum)

is another highlight, featuring Europe’s

largest collection of teddy bears, dolls,

and dollhouses.

ACTIVITIES WITH

CHILDREN IN BASEL

There are so many parks, playgrounds, activities, and museums with exhibits

especially for children that you will never run out of ideas for family outings.

Here are a few of our favorites.

Tours for families

Treasure hunt with Basil

The beloved character Basil the Baselstab takes the whole

family on a playful journey through the city, the zoo, or on

a detective adventure, searching for a lost gemstone. These

tours are great fun for puzzle-loving families who want to get

to know the city better.

Recommended for children age 6 to 10.

Vintage tram tour

Go back in time and explore Basel on a vintage tram ride.

This old-time tram with a top speed of 30 km/h shows you

what travel felt like a century ago. The 1920s motorized front

carriage includes live commentary in German and English. The

open-top summer carriage behind is perfect for families who

want to enjoy the ride without the commentary. Trams run

every Sunday from May to September, starting at SBB railway

station, in front of Hotel Euler.

Theater Basel guided tour

Theater Basel is so big that you could easily get lost in the

many corridors between doors, stages, and floors. Join a

guided children’s tour and go behind the scenes to ride the

giraffe lift, walk through a hidden tunnel, and discover all

hidden corners of the theater.

Indoor activities

Elys Boulderloft Basel

Climb, swing, slide; run, jump, hide! Easily reachable by

tram line 11, Elys Boulderloft is a guaranteed hit for active

children (and not just on rainy days). The family play area

(Bewegungslandschaft) is ideal for families to explore

bouldering. It offers a safe environment where children can

unleash their energy climbing, sliding, crawling through

tunnels, testing their balance on rope walks, or jumping into

the ball pit. There is a big indoor picnic area for families and a

cozy café serving great cappuccino.

Recommended for all ages (even children as young as 2).

Make sure to reserve a time slot and buy your ticket online.

Jakob’s Basler Leckerly

Join a tour of Jakob’s Basler Leckerly factory. Visit

Switzerland’s oldest biscuit factory (1753) and learn about

its 270-plus-year history and the story behind these famous

treats. This tour takes you through the factory and offers

sample Läckerli from three centuries. At the end of the tour,

you can wrap up your own “Läckerli” to take home.

The zoo

Museums

Natural History Museum of Basel

(Naturhistorisches Museum)

Immerse yourself in the diversity of the permanent exhibits. At

the Natural History Museum, discover gripping stories about

threatened or extinct species, or travel back in time to learn

about dinosaurs or saber-toothed tigers. Marvel at nature and

its fascinating secrets in the special exhibits.

Museum Tinguely

Museum Tinguely opened in 1996 and is situated on the bank

of the Rhine. It houses the largest collection of works by Jean

that children will love. The Museum Tinguely hosts family

Sundays, monthly guided family tours, workshops, and events.

and exotic animals. Basel Zoo is well worth a visit any time of

year, open 365 days.

In summer, the park is the perfect place to stroll through

the lush pathways. During winter, the various animal houses

guarantee a wide variety of up-close encounters. And when

temperatures drop below 10°C, children can watch the

penguins go for a walk through the zoo (Pinguinspaziergang)

at 11.00 daily.

Visit Markthalle Basel for a casual and child-friendly dinner.

Choose from a wide variety of dishes from all over the world,

served straight from stalls and food trucks.

TIPS

In spring and summer, the Kleinbasel banks of the Rhine are the place

to be! Meet with friends, have a drink or ice-cream at one of the many

Buvettes (Basel’s small, open-air eateries), or get into the water and

float down the river. A good place to enter is the riverbank just below

Museum Tinguely. If you start there, you can float 3 km down the river.

Keep your clothes dry in a Wickelfisch swim bag. Get yours at the tourist

information office at Barfüsserplatz or online at www.wickelfisch.ch.

(Always check water conditions before swimming to make sure it’s safe.)

Basel turned upside down. The Basel Carnival, or Fasnacht, known as

drei scheenschte Dääg (three best days), is part of the city’s cultural

identity. Fasnacht takes place on the Monday after Ash Wednesday. It

starts with the famous Morgestraich at 4.00 in the morning, in complete

darkness, when the city lights up with hand-painted lanterns and the

streets fill with music from costumed pipers and drummers. Over 20,000

participants celebrate for three days, and you cannot miss this!

Most of the museums in Basel offer free entry on the first Sunday of the

month. Entrance to special exhibits may still require a separate ticket.

Get a Basel Zoo family membership. Families with two adults and their

own children up to age 15 can get a yearly zoo pass for CHF 170. Valid

Holiday programs in private

and international schools:

Private and international schools in

the Basel region have their own wellestablished

on- and off-site holiday

camps during school holidays. These

provide a great solution for working

parents and allow children to stay in their

familiar environment with their friends

and classmates. Some families may find

that the convenience of these established

holiday programs offsets the higher

tuition costs associated with private or

international schooling.

Switzerland is a popular destination for expats looking for work opportunities. The country offers stunning nature,

charming villages, lots of family-friendly activities, and above all, it is safe and well organized.

As expat parents ourselves, we understand that relocating with children can be exciting and challenging at

the same time. The number one question families with school-age children ask us before relocating to Basel

is “What is the best school in Basel?” The answer depends on several factors, unique to each family. From

choosing between a local or international school to learning about language support and childcare options,

there are many aspects to consider. In this article, we will walk you through some important questions to

consider when choosing a new school.

1. Choosing between

local, private, and

international schools

One of the first decisions parents must

make when moving to Basel is whether to

enroll their child in a local Swiss school,

a private school, or an international

school. This choice depends on several

factors, including the child’s language

skills, the family’s expected duration of

stay in Switzerland, the availability of

employer tuition assistance programs,

and the child’s future academic roadmap.

• Local schools in Basel follow the

official Swiss curriculum (Lehrplan 21)

and provide instruction in German. Local

schools are free and of high quality,

making them a good option for families

planning a long-term stay, or families

who do not have employer-sponsored

tuition assistance programs.

• Private schools often offer bilingual

programs or alternative curricula such as

Montessori. They provide more flexibility

in language and teaching approaches.

• International schools follow globally

recognized curricula such as the

International Baccalaureate (IB) or the

English National Curriculum. Schools cater

to families planning to relocate to another

country after a few years or return to their

home country. International schools are

day schools, often including extracurricular

programs and hot lunches as standard.

Understanding these differences is the

first step in determining the best fit for

your child and family.

2. Language integration and

support in local schools

Attending a local school can be a great

opportunity for children. Local schools are

often within walking distance from home

and help children immerse in Swiss culture

and integrate into the local community.

However, a main challenge for non-

German-speaking families is language.

With German being the official language

in the northwestern part of Switzerland,

it is the primary language of instruction

in local schools. Schools offer various

support options for children who speak

little or no German through the program

“German as a second language” (Deutsch

als Zweitsprache – DaZ). DaZ teachers

help children learn German fast by offering

full-time language integration programs

in small groups and private sessions,

allowing students to first master the

language before joining mainstream

classes taught in German. In Basel-

Stadt, DaZ support is available at all

school levels and adapted to the age of

the child.

• Kindergarten: Children receive

language support from a certified DaZ

teacher within their regular kindergarten

setting once or several times a week.

• Primary School: Children often join

a one-year intensive language learning

program before transitioning to a

mainstream class. This program may also

include a small number of mainstream

classes. The following year, children

enter a mainstream class but continue to

benefit from advanced language learning

lessons for up to three years. Regular

teachers and DaZ teachers work closely

together to help the child improve.

While it is certainly easier for younger

children (under six) to pick up a new

language, older children can also adapt

well with the right support. We have

seen many older students pick up

German within a year and happily attend

a local school.

Contact the education department

in Basel-Stadt or Basel-Landschaft

for more information about available

language learning support programs.

3. Childcare before and after

school, and during lunchtime

Swiss local schools are (in)famous for

their long holidays, free afternoons, and

extended lunch breaks, which can present

challenges for working parents. Local

schools typically finish at 12.00, with

afternoon classes once or several days a

week depending on the child’s age.

When school finishes at 12.00, children

either go home for lunch or join a lunch

program. Catered school lunches are

not standard practice, and parents are

required to sign up and pay a fee.

There are several lunch options available:

• Internal lunch programs (schulinterne

Tagesbetreuung) are at or near the

school.

• External lunch programs

(schulexterne Tagesbetreuung, Kita

Mittagstisch) are at a nearby daycare

that may include a pick-up service

for children attending kindergarten.

•Community center or church lunch

programs (Mittagstisch).

In Basel-Stadt, school lunches, as

well as before- and after-school care,

are offered by Tagesstrukturen/Tagi.

Tagesstrukturen are facilities supervised

by qualified staff, offering lunch, sports,

homework assistance, and playtime.

Parents are required to book at least four

childcare modules at the beginning of the

schoolyear and commit for the entire

year. Fees are income-dependent, and

families not eligible for reductions pay

around CHF 15 per day (lunch and care),

Private and international schools, by

contrast, are day schools, offering daily

hot lunches, extracurricular activities,

and sports programs on site until around

18.00, making them more convenient for

working parents.

4. Childcare during

school holidays

Schools in Basel-Stadt and Basel-

Landschaft have 14 weeks of annual

holidays (excluding Swiss national

holidays), which can be challenging for

working parents.

Holiday programs in local schools:

In Basel-Stadt, there are several schools

that offer on-site holiday programs

(Ferienbetreuung an Schulen) for children

of all ages. These fun programs offer

sports, arts, activities, and theme-based

projects for all ages, and children can join

these programs once or several days a

week. Fees are income-dependent, with

families not eligible for reductions paying

around CHF 60 per day.

Additionally, private organizations offer

weeklong themed programs (Tagesferien)

during holidays at around 20 locations

in Basel, except for the week between

Christmas and new year. These programs

run from 8.00 to 18.00 and cost CHF

200 per week for families not eligible

for reductions. For more information

about holiday programs in Basel-stadt,

visit https://www.bs.ch/ and search

for Ferienbetreuung. Other private

organizations that offer camps (tech,

circus, soccer etc.) charge up to CHF 800

per week.

Your child will receive information about

all available programs at school. Programs

fill up quickly, so we recommend putting

the registration dates on your calendar.

5. Estimate duration of

stay in Switzerland

Your family’s expected length of stay

is another key factor when choosing a

school for your child.

Families planning a long-term stay in

Switzerland often choose to enroll their

children in a local school to learn German

and integrate into the local community.

For families planning a short-term stay in

Switzerland, an international school may

be preferred, as it provides continuity in

education and reduces the challenges of

transitioning between different school

systems.

6. Consider your child’s

academic roadmap

Finally, we recommend parents think

about their child’s academic goals when

choosing a school. The Swiss education

system is highly regarded. Diplomas and

certifications grant students access to

Swiss vocational education and training,

colleges of higher education, universities

of applied sciences, or universities. For

families planning to relocate to another

country or return to their home country,

international schools offering IB or

British A-Levels might be a better choice

to avoid having to take further education

entrance tests.

Conclusion

Choosing a school in Basel is a very

personal decision that depends on

your family’s unique circumstances. By

considering factors such as language

skills, childcare options, the duration

of your stay, and your child’s academic

goals, you can make an informed choice

that supports your child’s education for

the duration of your stay in Switzerland.

designed to prepare them for the next.

Museum Tinguely

Museum Tinguely is located on the banks of the Rhine in Basel. Opened in 1996, it was designed by Ticino

architect Mario Botta and houses the world’s largest collection of works by the fascinating Swiss artist

Jean Tinguely (1925–1991), a key pioneer of international post-war art. The permanent exhibition gives

an overview of his work, covering a period of four decades – from delicate early reliefs through to the

monumental machine sculptures of the 1980s.

Exhibitions & Events

Based on Tinguely’s imaginative universe,

Museum Tinguely proposes a diverse

programme that always seeks topical

dialogue with other artists and artforms,

offering an interactive experience that

appeals to all of the senses. More than

130 exhibitions (and artistic interventions)

have taken place since the opening,

featuring Jean Tinguely and the artists

he knew, including Niki de Saint Phalle,

Yves Klein and Marcel Duchamp, but also

contemporary artists who address socially

relevant issues of our time.

The exhibitions are accompanied by a

diverse programme of events, opening the

museum up to a broad public: from concerts

of classical music to DJ sets to family

Sundays, from workshops for schools and

adults to gatherings for senior citizens.

Museum Tinguely allows visitors to discover

art and culture with all of their senses while

enjoying a unique location. Surrounded by

the picturesque Solitude Park and with

access its own stretch of riverbank, it

offers an attractive place for recreation

and relaxation amid the bustle of city life.

The museum’s own bistro, Chez Jeannot,

welcomes both visitors to the museum

and people strolling along the Rhine.

Activities for

children and families

Museum Tinguely offers a variety of programs

for families and children, for example:

Public Family Tour through

the Jean Tinguely Collection

Every second and last Saturday of the

month from 2-3 pm, we offer a public

tour specifically for families. This allows

the whole family and friends to explore

the Jean Tinguely collection, from the

youngest to the young at heart.

Family Sundays

Family Sundays take place during major

special exhibitions; these are inclusive

events and are included in the museum

admission. The next Family Sundays will

take place on the following dates: May 11,

2025 / June 8, 2025 / October 19, 2025.

Kids’ Club

The Kids’ Club is always on the lookout

for the latest happenings in the museum

and the secrets of art. In the museum, they

focus on one artwork, and in the studio,

they build, create, and explore using various

materials. The themes change from session

to session. Occasionally, they also become

reporters, documentary filmmakers, and

actors behind the scenes at the Kids’ Club

TV! For children aged 8 and up.

Children’s Birthday Party

Celebrate your birthday amidst the machines

of Jean Tinguely! The birthday party includes

a guided tour of the museum followed by a

hands-on session in the studio.

Interactive parcours

through the collection

Our art education team has put together

two great parcours of our collection.

1) Follow your nose: Let your sense of

smell be your guide and discover Tinguely’s

artworks from a completely different angle.

The museum tour in German called «Immer

der Nase nach» (follow your nose) will also

reveal which type of «sniffer» you are. The

corresponding kit is available at the info

desk and, as always, there is no right or

wrong in art, just follow your nose.

2) Discover Tinguely by Chance: Let

chance guide you to different works in the

collection and encounter exciting questions!

The parcours through the collection is

aimed at all curious visitors from 6 years

and up. To explore Tinguely’s artworks in

a playful, independent way, an inspiring

leaflet is now available for both young and

old. Roll the dice, draw a card, toss a coin –

chance leads to new discoveries and sparks

thought-provoking ideas for an engaging

museum visit.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT

SCHOOL IN BASEL

Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions families make when relocating to a new city. The

Basel region has many private and international schools to choose from, each offering a unique curriculum,

language programs, sports, and extracurricular activities tailored to meet the needs of your child.

To help families with this important decision, we asked BLIS (Baselland International School), ELA Basel

(the Swiss British School of Basel), and ISB (International School Basel):

What advice would you give families relocating to Basel about finding the

right school for their children?

Schools in Basel reflect the diverse needs of the population

including variety in language, curriculum, size and

extracurricular programmes. My top 3 tips for choosing a

school are:

1. Reflect on Your Need - Identify what matters most to your

family—academics, community, extracurriculars, or behaviour

management. Knowing your priorities will guide your search.

2. Go Beyond the Website - Explore school websites and

reviews, but don’t stop there. Arrange a visit or call the

principal to get a real feel for the school’s culture and values.

3. Experience It Firsthand - If possible, request a trial day for

your child and talk to families currently enrolled at the school.

Seeing the school in action and getting honest feedback can

make all the difference

And bonus tip - Choose What’s Right for You - The perfect

school for others may not be the right one for your child.

Focus on what best aligns with your family’s unique needs

and preferences.

BASELLAND

INTERNATIONAL

SCHOOL

Choosing the perfect school for your child isn’t as simple as

it may seem. With multiple and varied options in the Basel

and Baselland area for International Education, one must

carefully prioritise their specific needs. Languages, class sizes,

facilities, curriculum, school philosophy and additional support

options are clear aspects that must be considered. But let

us not forget the “little things” that set many schools apart

from others. Does the school have sufficient parking for

drop off and pick up or are they in close proximity to public

transportation? What time of meals and food service do

they offer? Is the food simply warmed up or is it homemade

on site? Is the campus central to the city or on the country

side? Does the school offer camps for school holidays? After

School Care and Activities?

In the current international education circle in our area, your

options are very varied. Be sure to give yourself enough time

and enough information to be sure that the school you choose

meets all of your child’s needs. A perfect fit between the

student and school will make the world of difference in the

success of their academic career.

ISB

INTERNATIONAL

SCHOOL BASEL

When relocating to Basel, finding the right school for your

children is an important step to ensure a smooth transition. Start

by considering the educational needs of your child, including

language preferences, curriculum, and extracurricular interests.

Basel offers a variety of schooling options, including local

Swiss schools, bilingual programmes, and international schools

that follow globally recognised curricula like the International

Baccalaureate (IB).

If possible, visit schools in person, to help you understand the

learning environment, meet teachers, and ask about student

support and any other practical school life aspects, like

lunch programmes. Consider practical aspects like location,

transportation, and how the school integrates students into a

new cultural and social setting. International schools in particular

are experienced in helping children adapt, ensuring they thrive

both academically and socially.

Finally, plan ahead—some schools may have waiting lists—and

gather all necessary documentation early.

ipso! House of Learning offers a unique educational journey that is divided into three levels, enabling a seamless transition from and to

students is the basis for successful learning. In addition, we rely on modern learning methods tailored to individual needs. Project work

promotes not only creative thinking, but also the ability to work in a team. Here, students learn to find solutions together and take

responsibility. Our coaching approach helps children recognize and develop their strengths.

Another focus is career guidance, into which we invest significantly more time and effort than other schools. We also intensively prepare

LEARNING ABOUT SCHOOLS

WITH UNIQUE CURRICULA

Families have a variety of educational options to choose from in and around Basel, including

several smaller schools that offer non-mainstream curricula. These schools focus on personalized

learning paths, creative development, and fostering strong connections within the community. If

you’re looking for an alternative to the traditional education system, this article will introduce you

to four school concepts you might not yet be familiar with.

RSSM

WayUp

Nova Schule

Lernwält

Waldorf education based on

Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy.

A Curriculum Rooted in

CORE Principles.

A democratic school, following

the Sudbury school model.

Private school following the

Swiss curriculum.

Our school provides a space where children can learn in a lively

way and thrive—from playgroup to kindergarten and from

grades 1 through 9.

We are a family-oriented and innovative place of connection.

We are developing into an open day school with cultural and

artistic activities. Our school supports independent learning

paths with age-appropriate and individualized learning goals,

nurtures talents, and fosters a love for life and learning. Our

students grow into discerning, confident, practically skilled,

and creative individuals who are well-prepared and qualified

for their future educational and career paths. This enables

young people to stand strong in life.

Enrollment is possible at any time. Visit us and experience this

welcoming place located in a historic building that protectively

embraces the vibrant everyday school life.

Constanze Ermel, Head of school

A holistic school, working with core (clear-minded, openhearted

resilience) education.

“At WayUp, our curriculum is uniquely shaped by the CORE

approach—Clear-minded, Open-hearted Resilience Education.

This innovative framework prioritizes emotional wellbeing,

balance, and self-awareness as foundation to academic and

personal growth.

What sets us apart is our focus on whole-child development.

Alongside traditional subjects, we integrate practices that

nurture clarity of mind, foster meaningful relationships, and

build a sense of connection to oneself and the world. Our

students learn to approach challenges with resilience, empathy,

and confidence, skills essential for both academic success and

life beyond the classroom.

Teachers at WayUp are trained to guide from a grounded,

calm state, embodying the principles they teach. This creates

a warm and clear learning environment where children thrive.

Through this balance of structure, connection, and care, our

curriculum equips students to navigate life’s complexities with

strength and curiosity.”

NOVA is a school for around 30 children of kindergarten,

elementary, and secondary school age. It follows the Sudbury

school model. The Basel-Landschaft curriculum applies.

NOVA is a German-speaking school that prepares young people

for apprenticeships or further schooling within the Swiss

education system. Children and adults spend time together in

a democratic school community. All aspects of daily school life

are discussed and regulated in the school assembly.

NOVA is organized in mixed-age groups. Students have the

opportunity to learn autonomously and independently or

to take advantage of learning opportunities. They work

individually, at their own pace, or in groups. At NOVA, there

are no evaluations or grades.

NOVA places great value on a calm and relaxed learning

atmosphere. The spacious school campus offers a stimulating

learning environment and ample room for play and movement.

It includes several classrooms equipped with diverse materials

and teaching resources, a lounge, studios, an auditorium, a

rooftop terrace, and a school garden. NOVA is a day school,

with lunch provided daily except on Wednesdays.

Learning happens everywhere, all the time. At Lernwält, we

learn with and from each other about life and the world.

Learning aspires for co-creativity. This means that students

connect their wishes and learning goals to those of the

learning group, the educators, the parents, and society. That is

a lively negotiation and being in relationship with one another.

In doing so, we ask three questions:

• What do I need?

• What do you need?

• What do we need?

We work on learning projects that we plan and carry out

together. Everyone is supported in their self-, social-, and

subject-specific skills through individualized development

plans—even the educators. Our learning and skills are

documented in portfolios.

Life is learning.

RESTAURANT MURANO

Murano, a place where people come together to celebrate life’s finest

pleasures—great food, exceptional wine, and the joy of shared moments.

This dedication to making everyone feel at home extends to the

restaurant’s menu, where special requests and dietary needs

are thoughtfully accommodated.

A GUIDE TO LIVING IN BASEL

Located in the heart of Basel, Murano is more than just a

restaurant—it is a place where gastronomy, art, and culture

come together. Known for its hospitality and dedication to

high-quality dishes, Murano offers an experience that extends

far beyond the plate.

A restaurant with a vision

When Steve Vernalde took over Murano, he knew exactly what

he wanted to create. “Murano was created with a clear vision,”

Steve shares. “I wanted to create a space where guests feel at

home while enjoying exceptional food in an inspiring setting.”

The restaurant’s philosophy is reflected in every detail—from

the elegant yet unpretentious interior, to the commitment to

handcrafted dishes. Murano embodies hospitality, authenticity,

and a passion for bringing people together.

A table for everyone

As a family-friendly restaurant, Murano welcomes all

generations.

Culinary craftsmanship and

a passion for quality

Murano is committed to using high-quality ingredients and

traditional culinary craftsmanship. As a proud holder of Fait

Maison certification, the restaurant guarantees that every dish

is prepared in-house, free from artificial additives, and that no

ready-made products are used.

Signature dishes like creamy risotto served straight from

a parmesan wheel, creative meat and fish specialties, and

seasonal delights enrich the menu.

A great meal deserves the perfect wine pairing, and Murano’s

carefully curated wine selection ensures just that. “From an

elegant Nebbiolo to accompany a truffle-infused risotto to a

bold red paired with a perfectly grilled entrecôte, we help our

guests find the right wine to go with every dish,” Steve says.

A stage for art and culture

Beyond its culinary excellence, Murano offers a stage for

artists, musicians, and photographers. Regular live music

performances, art exhibitions, and cultural evenings transform

the restaurant into a space where creativity and gastronomy

meet. This combination of fine dining and art creates a unique

atmosphere that keeps guests coming back for more.

We look forward to welcoming you with your

family and friends for lunch, an afternoon

coffee, or a sophisticated evening meal.

When my family first arrived in Basel

in 2002, with no German to speak of, I

would spend my days exploring the

streets of our beautiful new city with

my toddler in hand and my baby in a

stroller. I consistently would come

across workers, busily taking down what

looked like the infrastructure to a fun

family event - a fair, circus, market - and

perpetually felt frustrated that I was

only learning about happenings as they

were being dismantled.

At the time, there was no resource that

helped connect the English-speaking

community of Basel with the generous

offerings of our city. So, driven by a

desire to fill this void, I teamed-up with

German-speaking expat and fellow parent

at the Swiss International School (SIS),

Susanne Hiller, and created a bilingual

parent newsletter to help inform other

school families about all of the wonderful

things available to them in the region.

Five years later, in 2012, we decided to

make the information accessible to the

greater English-speaking community

of Basel. We paired up with a graphic

designer and created the Basel-wide

free English-language magazine called,

at the time, Basel Family Magazine.

Very quickly, however, the magazine’s

popularity grew such that we could no

longer meet the print demands based on

advertising income alone. Therefore, in

its second year, Basel Family Magazine

became available by subscription or

could be purchased as individual issues.

As its content was by no means relevant

only to families but just as much to

singles and couples, including events and

information for every age and interest,

the name was eventually changed to

Basel Life Magazine.

The magazine enjoyed an amazing 9-year

run—90 issues published with a passion

for Basel and a mission to help other

expats make the most of their time in

this beautiful city. And then Covid hit.

The cultural sector was struck hard by

the pandemic, and as a publication that

writes about everything there is to do and

see, Basel Life Magazine also struggled

to survive. Eventually, it became clear

that continuing the print format was

no longer feasible. However, thanks

to popular demand and a successful

crowdfunding campaign, we received the

financial backing to create the new digital

platform, simply called Basel Life.

Like the magazine, Basel Life is an

English-language guide to living in

Basel. This online resource, which has

been up and running since January

2022, brings you up-to-date information

about events, museum exhibits, fairs,

markets, sports, and excursion ideas. An

easy-to-use calendar lists events for all

age groups and interests that you can

share or download to your electronic

calendar with a simple click. But the

platform is so much more than just an

events calendar! Here you can also find

lots of information on culture, history,

and practical tips for living in Basel and

Switzerland. On the homepage, you

can remain up to date on the latest

information about Basel, like new

bicycle or driving rules, tram re-routing,

results of the latest votes, cool offers,

and other tidbits of general interest.

In remaining true to our mission to

help other expats find everything

they need to make the most of their

stay in Basel, the Basel Life website

is available free for everyone to use;

there is no subscription, registration,

or fee; so why not check it out at

basellife.com.

Christine Pesold

“Whether families with young children,

guests with allergies, people with

disabilities, or animal lovers—we strive to

create a welcoming environment in which

every guest feels at ease and can enjoy a

memorable dining experience,” Steve says.

“Basel is a welcoming city, and the

more you engage with the community,

the more it will start to feel like home.”

BRASWELL ARTS CENTER

(BAC)

A Conversation with Armando & Lisa Braswell

Q: Armando and Lisa, can you tell us about yourselves,

your family, and your life in Basel?

Lisa: We are a multicultural family living in Basel, and we

absolutely love it here. We are both originally from New York

City and met in a performing arts high school. We have been

together for over 25 years. We moved to Basel in 2012 when

Armando joined Ballett Theater Basel, and the city quickly

became home.

Armando: We have two energetic boys who are the heart

of our lives and even help out with the studio — when we

ask nicely, of course. Basel has been the perfect place for

our family, with its mix of international culture, world-class

art, and close-knit community. We have built such a strong

connection here, both personally and professionally.

Armando focuses on the artistic development, fundraising,

and public relations. Our boys are also involved as counselors

during holiday camps, which has been a great way for them to

learn responsibility and connect with other children.

Q: How has that shaped the vision for the studio?

Armando: Being a family business has influenced everything we do.

We have worked hard to create a space that feels like home

for other families. We always tell people there is no need to

over-explain — we have children of our own. BAC is about

being welcoming, supportive, and inclusive — values that

come directly from our own experiences as a family.

Q: Can you tell us about how your family works together

to make the studio a welcoming space for other families?

Q: Do you think dance can help families and children

integrate into a new community? Can you share any

stories about students who’ve found connections

through your studio?

Armando: Absolutely. Dance is a universal language that can break

down barriers. Every child who comes to BAC has a story of finding

new connections. Our community speaks over 35 languages. Our

pre-professional students are from all over the world, and every

dancer has a story of searching for their place. It is incredible to

see their confidence grow as they connect with peers through

dance. Parents often tell us how much it helps them adjust to life

in Basel and that coming to BAC feels like a piece of home.

Q: What types of classes or activities do you offer for

school-age children?

Q: Armando, you have an impressive background in dance

and are a sought-after teacher, instructing at some of

the world’s most prestigious schools and competitions.

What inspired you to start a dance studio in Basel?

Armando: Thank you. Opening the Braswell Arts Center was

a natural next step for me. After years of performing and

teaching internationally, I wanted to create a space where

everyone — regardless of age, background, or body type —

could experience the joy of dance and the arts.

I also had a vision for young professional dancers and wanted

to create a pre-professional program that I would want to

join. Basel’s vibrant and diverse community made it the ideal

place to bring these visions to life.

Q: BAC is a real family business. You run the studio

together, and even your two boys are involved. What is

it like running a family business?

Armando: From the moment you walk in, there is definitely a

New York vibe — I just want to say that. We focus on creating

a friendly and approachable atmosphere. Lisa and I are both

very hands-on, and our boys bring their own energy to the

space, whether they’re popping in for a cupcake or iced tea

from our Arts Café in the reception area, or helping out during

holiday camps. We also make an effort to listen to feedback

from parents and students, ensuring the studio reflects the

needs of our community.

Q: What do you think makes Braswell Arts Center unique?

Lisa: I think it’s our combination of professionalism, warmth,

and live music. We offer high-quality dance classes with live

music and innovative arts programs, but it is the sense of

belonging and community that really sets us apart. There is a

place for everyone at BAC.

Lisa: We offer a wide range of programs, including Ballet,

Contemporary Dance, Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Creative Movement.

For younger children, we focus on building coordination and

confidence in a fun, supportive environment. We also run

holiday camps that combine dance, art, music, and outings,

which are perfect for school-age kids.

Q: Are there any programs that you might recommend to

families who are new to Basel?

Armando: Our holiday camps are a great starting point. They

are fun and provide a wonderful way for kids to make friends

and for parents to meet other families. For those interested

in dance, our beginner and open classes are welcoming and

low-pressure, making them ideal for newcomers.

Q: Lastly, do you have any advice for expat families who

have just relocated or are planning to relocate to Basel?

For more information about Braswell

Arts Center, visit

www.braswellartscenter.com.

Lisa: It is an amazing experience, though it can be challenging

at times. Armando and I complement each other perfectly —

I handle logistics, client management, and operations, while

Lisa: My advice would be to get involved as soon as you can

— join classes, participate in message boards, and attend local

events. Basel is a welcoming city, and the more you engage

with the community, the more it will start to feel like home.

ANIMO COACHING

Some children need extra support to reach their full potential, and for

families navigating ADHD, finding the right resources is key. In this article,

we speak with Jana Landolt, an ADHD and life coach in Basel.

“One of the most important aspects is

understanding ADHD — both for the person

affected and for those around them.”

Jana, can you tell us

about yourself and

what inspired you to

start Animo Coaching?

I am an ADHD and life coach,

as well as an author. I run my

practice, Animo Coaching, in

Basel and online. For many

years, I was a primary school

teacher and met many children

who did not seem to fit into

the system. I loved their

energy, their ideas, and special

ways of thinking. Over time,

I realized most of them had

been diagnosed with ADHD.

To better support them, I

pursued further training as

an ADHD coach alongside my

qualifications as a life coach

and psychological counselor.

Soon after, I opened my

practice, Animo Coaching.

What services do you

offer in your practice?

I primarily work one-on-one

but also support parents and

families through courses,

training, and webinars. I

specialize in ADHD in girls

and women and recently

published my first book,

Different and Right! (Anders

und richtig!) for girls. In

addition, I run women’s

coaching groups and organize

meetings for girls and young

women with ADHD.

Many of our readers

are international

families who have

just relocated or are

planning to relocate

to Basel. What should

these families know

about support for

children with ADHD

in Switzerland?

Well, to be honest, Switzerland

is not great at supporting

neurodiversity (yet). The good

news is that there is help and

support, but it is mostly on a

private basis.

I suggest families start

with seeing a pediatrician

to establish a clear path for

treatment and school support.

The pediatrician might refer

you to the children’s hospital,

the Universitäts-Kinderspital

beider Basel (UKBB), which

offers services for children with

ADHD, such as concentration

training in small groups.

However, as far as I know, all

courses are in German.

I highly recommend contacting

the ADHD organization,

Elpos. They have branches

throughout Switzerland

and provide addresses for

specialists, courses, webinars,

and everything you need to

find further support. You can

also reach out to children

and youth services or school

psychologists, who can help

you discuss your concerns.

For adults, there is ADHS

20 Plus, and for broader

information and support,

ADHS Schweiz. Keep in mind

that much of the information

is in German.

In Basel, there is also a

specialized clinic called

Unablenkbar (Indestructible)

and a handful of skilled ADHD

coaches and therapists.

What support options

or programs are

typically available

in Swiss schools for

children with ADHD?

Unfortunately, there are no

specific support programs

for children with ADHD that

I am aware of. However,

schools do have special needs

teachers and psychomotor

therapists who support

children alongside regular

lessons, either in class or on

a one-on-one basis. That said,

resources are limited, and the

demand for additional support

is high.

The support children with ADHD

and their families receive largely

depends on the understanding

and skills of their class teachers.

School social workers and

psychologists are also available

to provide counseling, but they

do not offer specific programs

for ADHD.

With an ADHD diagnosis,

your child is entitled to what

is called a Nachteilsausgleich

(disadvantage compensation)

for tests and exams. This

ensures that children

with ADHD have equal

opportunities to succeed in

education despite difficulties

with focus, organization, or

task completion in a typical

classroom setting.

In practice, the Nachteilsausgleich

accommodations

may include:

• Extended time for

exams or assignments.

• Breaks during exams to

help the child refocus.

• Modified tasks or

assignments tailored to the

child’s attention span and

ability to process information.

These measures aim to reduce

the impact of ADHD-related

challenges and help children

perform to the best of their

abilities without being unfairly

disadvantaged.

The specific accommodations

are typically decided in

collaboration with parents,

teachers, and special

education professionals, and

they vary depending on the

canton and school. To claim

the Nachteilsausgleich, you

will need an Attest (certificate)

from the office for support

and integration, the Fachstelle

Förderung und Integration in

Basel. You can contact this

office for the exact procedure,

or ask your child’s teachers

for guidance.

A key part of your

work involves coaching

parents, families,

and teachers. Why

is it important for

the broader support

system to understand

ADHD, and how do

you guide them?

One of the most important

aspects is understanding

ADHD — both for the person

affected and for those around

them. This understanding

helps with developing

appropriate strategies and

responding in ways that truly

support the individual. A

neurodivergent brain requires

individual strategies and

should not be forced into

a mold designed for linear,

neurotypical thinking.

An environment that does

not understand ADHD can

create great stress, which

can intensify symptoms

and worsen problems. With

understanding and the right

support, a secure and reliable

bond can be built, which

is crucial for the healthy

development of the child.

I advise and coach parents

individually in one-on-one

sessions, helping them

understand and support their

child. Since ADHD is largely

hereditary, one of the parents

is often affected as well, and

we take this into account

during coaching.

Understanding ADHD is an

important step in creating

the right environment for

a child to thrive. With the

right strategies and support,

families and educators can

help neurodivergent children

overcome challenges, build

confidence, and reach their

full potential.

A VISIT

TO OVER-

GROUND

NINJA FUN FOR CHILDREN

(AND THEIR PARENTS) IN BASEL

Today, we meet with Andrea Messner,

the manager of Overground, Basel’s only

indoor ninja gym, to learn more about their

offerings for children and adults.

Andrea, can you tell us about Overground?

Of course! Overground is a modern indoor ninja gym offering

2’500 square meters of training space. We opened in Basel

in 2021 to provide children and adults with a fun and safe

environment to explore movement, develop new skills, and

gain confidence. From ninja courses to trampolining, chase

tag, and parkour, there is something for everyone.

I am sure there are many people who are not familiar with

these sports. Can you explain them to us?

Yes, we hear that often. Ninja, chase tag, and parkour are

exciting sports that challenge children to move creatively,

improve coordination, and build strength. These sports

focus on overcoming obstacles, agility, and having fun while

staying active.

What courses do you offer for children?

We offer weekday afternoon and weekend courses. For

children 5–8, our Polysport courses teach basic motor skills

through ninja, parkour, chase tag, and trampolining in a fun

and playful way. For children 9–12, we offer Polysport as

well as chase tag courses, where children learn the rules and

tactics of professional tag games. We also have an acrobatics

course introducing floor gymnastics.

Do you offer courses for children who have never tried these

sports before?

Absolutely. Our Polysport courses are ideal for beginners. They

are designed to be both challenging and fun, helping children build

confidence while developing essential motor skills. Our coaches

make sure that every child feels comfortable and supported. We

train in small groups, and there is a lot of individual attention.

Overground also offers holiday camps. Can you tell us about

these camps?

Camps take place during all cantonal school holidays. They include

a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, ranging from games and

sports to focused training. Every camp ends with a special event

where children can showcase what they have learned.

That sounds fun. What does a typical camp day look like?

A full-day camp runs from 9.00 to 17.00 and includes lunch. Children

take part in group games, outdoor excursions, and various training

sessions. It’s an all-in-one adventure where they have fun, make

friends, and discover new sports. For those who prefer shorter

sessions, we also offer half-day camps from 9.00 until 13.00

(lunch included), or afternoon camps from 13.00 to 17.00.

Do you offer trial lessons?

Yes, we offer trial lessons for children up to 12 years old,

available 2–4 times a month. These sessions cost 25 CHF and are

a great way for children and parents to see what we offer and

decide if it is the right fit.

BUILDING

COMMUNITY

THROUGH YOGA

THE STORY OF

YOGABLOOM IN BASEL

An article featuring Emily Pease, co-owner of Yogabloom.

“Yoga is more than a practice. It is a

way to connect, to grow, and to create a

sense of belonging.”

When Emily first arrived in Basel, starting a yoga studio was not part

of her plan. In fact, fifteen years ago, neither Basel nor owning a studio

were on her radar.

Emily’s journey to Basel began with a love of travel and a desire for new

experiences. She met her partner and now co-owner of Yogabloom,

Sandi Georgiew, in Basel while teaching together. The couple hosted a

Family Yoga retreat and planted the first seeds of what would become

Yogabloom, a thriving studio in the heart of Basel.

Yogabloom is more than a yoga studio; it embodies Emily and Sandi’s

vision for their own family — a warm, familial space designed to foster

connection, mindfulness, and joy.

“Yogabloom feels like home,” Emily shares. “It is a space intentionally

designed and lovingly built to reflect our values and the foundations of

yoga. Being at the heart of this vibrant community is both an honor and

a joy.”

Yoga and Family Connections

For Emily, yoga is deeply personal. Her firstborn daughter was the

inspiration behind her very first Family Yoga class. What began as a way

to share the physical benefits of yoga — flexibility, strength, and body

awareness — evolved into something much deeper.

“Yoga teaches me to pause, to be present with my loved ones, and to

approach challenges with patience and compassion,” Emily says. These

principles are not just ideas she teaches her students; they are the

guiding principles she strives to embody in her family life.

Owning a studio allows her to weave her personal and professional

worlds together, creating a space that nurtures connection both within

her community and her own household. “My children are my greatest

teachers,” she adds. “They remind me to embrace imperfection and find

ease in the flow of life.”

79

78 79

A space for every generation

Yogabloom offers a range of classes designed to bring the benefits of

yoga to all ages, including children 2 to 12 years old. Classes provide

children with opportunities to build confidence, develop new skills, and

experience yoga and mindfulness in a playful way.

From Family Yoga sessions on Sundays, which foster bonding through

movement and imagination, to playful glow-in-the-dark yoga (Glowga)

adventures, Aerial Yoga classes, and yearly Summer Yoga Camps for

children 6 to 12 years old, there is something for every child to explore.

A warm welcome to

international families

Yogabloom’s community is as diverse as the city of Basel itself, welcoming

families from all over the world alongside a strong local Swiss presence.

The studio is a place where a blend of different cultures and languages

creates a warm and inclusive space where everyone feels at home.

“Many of our international students find us shortly after arriving in

Basel,” Emily shares. “We love introducing them to others who are

already settled, both in the city and in their yoga practice. The studio

offers a welcoming space where it is easy to connect, meet new friends,

and create a sense of belonging during a significant life transition.”

Emily’s advice for families new to Basel

Relocating to a new city can be both exciting and overwhelming. Emily’s

advice for expat families is rooted in the principles of yoga:

Stay Open and Curious Treat relocation like a yoga practice. Approach it

with openness and give yourself time to adjust.

Find Community Joining a local yoga studio like Yogabloom can be a

wonderful way to meet like-minded people and build connections. Many

lasting friendships have begun here.

Practice Presence During the chaos of moving, yoga can help you stay

grounded and present.

Explore Together Use yoga as a foundation for quality family time,

whether it is practicing together or exploring your new surroundings

with mindfulness.

“Most importantly, be patient with yourself and your family,” Emily

advises. “Settling in takes time, but with community and self-care,

the process of arriving in Basel can be incredibly rewarding.”

30 days in Basel

Welcome to Basel. Time to explore.

3. Visit the cathedral, the Basler Münster, and

climb its towers

One of the most famous landmarks in Basel, the 800-year-old Romantic and

the city and its surroundings.

1. Walk along the Rhine

Perfect for a scenic stroll any time of the

year. Discover cafés, restaurants, parks, and

Walk through Basel’s Old Town and learn about

its rich 2’000-year history. Basel’s Altstadt is full of

Ice Skating is a beloved winter activity in Basel. It offers a fun way

to stay active during the colder months and is a perfect afternoon

facilities. Our favorite is the Kunsteisbahn Margarethen, which

itself has three rinks, at least one of which is open for public skating

during opening hours. Other rinks are the St. Jakob Arena indoor

rink, open year-round, and the twin rinks at Eglisee. Skate rentals

are available, making it easy for everyone to join in.

Basel’s yearly Christmas market is one of the most beautiful and largest in Switzerland. It stretches

across Barfüsserplatz, Münsterplatz, and Claraplatz, featuring cozy wooden stalls, food stands with

seasonal treats and Glühwein, and rides for children.

The Münsterplatz is especially magical and our favorite place to visit with young children. The beloved

Märchenwald is a fairy-tale forest where children can enjoy hands-on activities like candle making and

gingerbread decorating or listen to Christmas stories in the puppet theater.

30. Basel Fasnacht — Basel turned upside down.

The Basel Carnival, or Fasnacht, known as drei scheenschte Dääg (three best days), is part of Basel’s

cultural identity. Fasnacht takes place on the Monday after Ash Wednesday. Wake up early and watch

the famous Morgestraich. Starting at 4 a.m., in complete darkness, the city lights up with hand-painted

lanterns, and the streets fill with music from costumed pipers and drummers. Over 20,000 participants

celebrate for three days.

Don’t forget to try traditional Fasnacht treats like Zwiebelwähe (onion tart) and Mehlsuppe (flour soup).

You cannot miss this.
