Community page targeted by online scammer
• By Kees Chalmers
TRADITIONALLY trustworthy
community Facebook pages are
becoming another hunting ground
for online scam artists.
Redcliffs resident, Kirsten Iliffe,
learned this the hard way last week
after being cheated out of $200.
While scrolling Facebook
on Wednesday night she came
across the ‘Sumner, New Zealand’
Facebook community page.
She saw a post advertising outdoor
furniture and contacted the
seller, who requested a $100 deposit.
Although initially happy to
oblige, Iliffe grew suspicious when
Sumner swells
with surf, sound
IT WAS another successful year
for the Single Fin Mingle, with
its biggest result for international
attendance.
More than 50 international
surfers took to the waves at Sumner
Beach at the weekend, organiser
Ambrose McNeill told Stuff.
McNeill predicted some 5000
people had walked through the
longboard surfing competition,
street party and other ticketed
events since Thursday night.
The four-day gathering included
a film festival, live jazz and DJ
performances, a street party, an
organised bar hop and more.
The surfers were met with large
rough waves on Friday, the first
day of competition. Conditions
improved on Saturday for the
finals, which saw Kai Ellice-Flint
from Australia and Mahina
Akaka from Hawaii win the men
and women’s divisions.
• More photos, page 4
asked to pay the full amount upfront
– but proceeded anyway.
Iliffe also queried the name on
the seller’s bank account which was
different from her Facebook alias.
“I thought for $200, it’s not
worth the worry. It looked like
good furniture, so I put it through,”
she said.
An hour later, Iliffe saw the
original post had been deleted
and re-uploaded, this time with a
$300 price.
She did not hear from the
seller after that.
“I feel a bit embarrassed about
it, but I think we should get it
out there because it’s so sad this
is happening on these pages
that do so much good for the
community.
“Most people are pretty
aware that there’s scammers
on Marketplace, but you
just wouldn’t expect it on a
community page.
Show of support for dark
sky reserve on peninsula
• By Kees Chalmers
INITIAL MEETINGS confirm
community support to turn
Banks Peninsula into a dark sky
reserve.
Meetings have been held in
Akaroa and Birdlings Flat to
gauge community support for
the eco-friendly initiative.
Dark sky areas have limited
light pollution, increasing the
visibility of stars, reducing
energy use and supporting
conservation, human health and
tourism.
More than 20 people attended
the Akaroa meeting while
more than 40 went along to the
Birdlings Flat one.
Akaroa Stargazing co-owner,
Luca Devescovi and Banks Peninsula
MP Vanessa Weenink led
the meetings.
Devescovi said the response
from the public was “overall
positive”.
“It looks like we have a lot of
support,” he said.
Akaroa Stargazing is owned
by Devescovi and his partner
Manon Sasso, and offers guided
astronomical tours.
Some Birdlings Flat residents
raised concerns over the large
influx of tourists the dark sky
reserve could attract.
While Devescovi said the
concerns were valid, he assured
residents an increase in
tourism would not be instantaneous.
“Things are not going to
change overnight, this is
going to be a slow increase
in tourism.”
More significant than the
tourism implications is the effect
on the peninsula’s conservation.
“This is the reason we are
doing this,” said Devescovi.
“We want to protect our
future generations, we
want to protect ourselves from
light pollution, we want to
protect our communities so
everyone has a better quality of
life.”
Devescovi hopes to achieve
certification for most of the
peninsula, with its western
boundary stretching from the
end of the Kaitorete Spit to just
west of Port Levy.
SHOOTING FOR THE STARS: Luca
Devescovi (above right) and Vanessa
Weenink hosted two public meetings
about turning Banks Peninsula into a dark
sky reserve.
He described being in a
leading role for the initiative as a
“tremendous honour”.
Before a dark sky reserve
application can be submitted,
the city council would need to
enforce lighting ordinances to
regulate the use of lights, mainly
street lights.
Consultations with the public
will continue to be held.
“We are well on track, its
looking positive. Finally,
what we have been dreaming
of is happening,” Devescovi said.
Akaroa couple killed in
crash near Little River
Akaroa couple Anne, 79, and Jack
Clark, 91, were the two people
who died after a car crash near
Little River. They were married
for nearly 40 years. Both were
former teachers and Anne was
president of the Banks Peninsula
The couple’s car crashed down
a bank on Christchurch Akaroa
died soon after being transported
to hospital, and Jack died on
Saturday.
Family’s car tips onto roof
The Little River and Akaroa
volunteer fire brigades were called
out at 5.10pm on Sunday after a
car with a family of five inside
tipped onto its roof. The single
vehicle crash happened on State
Highway 75 near Barry’s Bay. The
mother was left with moderate
injuries while the rest of the
family were unharmed.
New roof for yacht club
The Christchurch Yacht Club will
get a new roof, thanks to Graham
Hill Roofing and the Breeze. The
club entered a competition run by
the radio station in conjunction
with the roofing company to
give away a new roof. A plan was
already under way to repair the
club’s roof, which has significant
leaks. The re-roofing is scheduled
for next Friday.
Facebook fraud
prompts warning
• From page 1
“I suppose it’s just another level
people are going to that we need
to be aware of,” Iliffe said.
She rang her bank that night
to ensure the scammer could not
gain access into her account.
Iliffe was informed the scammer
had an ASB account so
she called the bank’s fraud line
and told them to look into the
account’s transactions.
She also logged the situation
with police.
“$200 is not a big deal to me,
but it’s about the principle. That’s
a lot of money for some people.
“It’s just wrong, you want to be
able to trust that sort of stuff on
your community page,” she said.
Iliffe believes the scammer may
have been able to hijack the Facebook
profile of an existing group
member in order to bypass any
vetting carried out by the page’s
administrators.
Another group member who
wished to remain anonymous,
narrowly avoided being tricked
by the same scammer.
She was skeptical about sending
the money before seeing the
furniture in person.
In a photo sent by the seller,
the furniture was pictured on
The buyer immediately put a
She then took to the community
Sumner, New Zealand page
the scammer had managed to
Car crash cause of
tsunami test failure
• By Adam Burns
PLANNED testing of tsunami
sirens did not happen because
the Auckland-based person
responsible was dealing with a
car crash outside their property
at the time.
The city council initially
blamed the failure on “human
error” but on Tuesday provided
further details about why the 45
sirens between Taylors Mistake
and Brooklands did not sound
at 11am on Sunday morning.
City council head of community
support and partnerships
John Filsell conceded it was
unacceptable to have an emergency
system so dependent on
one person.
“The supplier was providing
immediate response to a motor
vehicle accident outside their
property at the time of the test,”
he said.
“We recognise that it is not
acceptable to have a system
that relies so heavily on one
individual, which is why
discussions are under way
with our external supplier
to ensure there are sufficient
safeguards in the system
PHOTO: CCC
to reduce the risk of this
happening in the future.
“We are also currently
reviewing the role of sirens
in the tsunami warning
system for Christchurch and
Banks Peninsula. The issues
experienced on Sunday will
form part of that review.”
Testing of Christchurch’s tsunami
sirens usually coincided
with the beginning and end of
daylight saving time.
The sirens were expected to
be retested in the next couple of
weeks.
In a memo sent to community
leaders on Monday, the city
council’s civil defence and
emergency management
manager Brenden Winder said
Civil Defence could not directly
access the siren system.
The council first hired the
external supplier in 2012.
Decision on disputed
Port Levy Bach delayed
Public meeting
on LPC expansion
THE RĀPAKI tangata tiaki
leadership group and Lyttelton
community members are
organising a public meeting
to discuss the Lyttelton Port
Company’s land reclamation
project at Te Awaparahi Bay.
It will be held at Lyttelton’s St
Saviours at Holy Trinity Church
at 3pm on Sunday.
Spokesperson and former
list MP Nuk Korako said the
meeting was a call to action on
how the Lyttelton communities
partnering with mana whenua
can join together to “stop this
environmental travesty”.
“Not one more metre” has
become the call to arms.
A new, seven-hectare phase
of reclamation by the port
company is now under way in
Te Awaparahi Bay, about a kilometre
east of the inner harbour.
Iwi are concerned the reclamation
has and will continue to
have major adverse affects to
marine eco-systems.
Korako said the meeting lineup
includes speakers from Te
Hapū o Ngāti Wheke (Rāpaki)
and Otago University’s Coastal
Peoples Southern Sky. Politicians
and councillors are expected to
attend. It will be live-streamed.
The meeting follows on from a
Rāpaki Rūnanga hui on Sunday,
Korako said.
CONSIDERATION: The city council has asked for more
information before deciding whether to give a contentious
Port Levy bach a 25-year lease.
A PORT LEVY bach at the
centre of a neighbourhood
dispute has hit a snag.
It was expected the family
which owns the bach would have
been given a 25-year lease by
the city council last week, after
a recommendation by Te Pataka
o Rakaihautu Banks Peninsula
Community Board.
The bach is owned by the
Woodward family, who use it as
a holiday home.
Neighbours have been fighting
to have the bach removed for
more than a decade because it
restricts public access to Port
Levy at high tide. There are also
concerns over a belief waste is
being disposed into the bay, and
rocks from the foreshore being
used to create an elevated path.
Council staff said the bach has
existed and been occupied by the
Woodwards on an unformed paper
road for more than 80 years
– another point of contention for
neighbourhood spokesperson
Ian Culpan.
But the city council has gone
back to the community board
seeking more information before
it makes a decision.
“Further advice and consideration
was needed regarding
the terms of the lease and mana
whenua views,” said council chief
executive Mary Richardson.
Bach owner Lindsay
Woodward was disappointed,
saying “the community board
has been given 10 years of
information”.
Woodward also said he had
the backing of Te Runanga o
Koukourarata in the dispute.
Koukourarata marae general
manager Gina-Lee Duncan
would not comment on Woodward’s
claim, only saying: “This
is a direct dispute between the
CCC and Lindsay Woodward
and his family.”
Woodward told Bay Harbour
News his father taught him how
to fish and hunt at the bach, and
he taught his sons and grandsons
to do the same.
“I’d hate to be in the position
where I’m denied the chance to
teach my great-grandkids or see
my son pass it on,” he said.
Woodward has rejected his
neighbours’ claims of dumping
waste into the bay and complained
they have been using
scare tactics to drive his family
away.
“It’s just intimidation all the
time,” he said.
Culpan said he was not
surprised the decision had
been pushed back, as he felt
community board consultation
was “rushed”.
He said he will speak to
neighbours and figure out next
steps.
The Eastern frontman Adam McGrath
vows to play on after having a stroke
• By John Ferguson
WHEN ADAM McGrath woke
up with “kind of a funky eye
thing” last week, he had no idea
he was having a stroke.
The Lyttelton-based lead singer,
songwriter and guitarist for
popular country/folk band The
Eastern initially tried to carry
on as normal, because he had
two major gigs to perform – the
Dunedin Arts Festival last Saturday
and the Wānaka Festival of
Colour on Sunday.
“I tried to walk it off, using my
teenage rugby league mantra:
‘Broken leg? Sore throat? Measles?
Walk it off’, but it wasn’t
coming good.”
He told fans on social media he
went to a couple of optometrists
and a doctor, and was advised
to go immediately to hospital.
He was diagnosed with a stroke
and was admitted to Dunedin
Hospital.
McGrath was disappointed the
band could not perform, because
the concerts were “going to be
big ones with close to sell-out”,
and he apologised to his audiences.
“I’m super, super sorry,” he
said.
Black Silk and Buried Secrets
by Deborah Challinor
The second riveting historical fiction novel in the Tatty Crowe series,
sequel to BLACK SILK AND SYMPATHY, for fans of Jackie French, Tea
The second captivating novel featuring intrepid heroine
Ferrymead
Tatty Crowe and the fascinating world of Sydney’s
Victorian funeral business, from bestselling historical
fiction author Deborah Challinor.
Sydney, 1871. Twenty-five-year-old widow Tatty Crowe
is the owner of busy undertaking firm Crowe Funerals.
Life and business are good until Tatty notices how many
women are dying after unlawful abortions, and after a terrible
tragedy strikes close to home, she vows to expose the culprit.
And then there are the whispered rumours of baby farming. Once again
Tatty sets out to investigate the crisis and finds herself immersed in the
dark and sometimes heartless world of paid foster care and adoption.
Along the way she encounters an old foe, and clashes with a new
adversary who, it transpires, is far more dangerous.
From the grim slums of Chippendale and Newtown to the grand houses
of Woolloomooloo to Sydney’s rowdy Criminal Court, comes the next
chapter in the story of compassionate and clever - but headstrong -
Tatty Crowe.
GIGS: The Eastern had to cancel shows after frontman Adam McGrath suffered a stroke.
“I’m not sure exactly what’s
going to play out over the next
wee while, but I think, after a
few caught breaths, we should be
good to go and deploy again.”
On Monday, he felt much better
and was full of praise for the
medical staff looking after him.
“Now at this point, thanks to
y’all, I can catch a breath and get
all this stuff squared away, and
have a wee break, which is rare.
“I don’t need anything else. I’m
so, so grateful, but I’m good.
“The roof is thatched and the
windows are patched. We’re
going to be OK.”
He said, in exchange for his
fans’ kindness, he planned to organise
some free shows, to thank
them for their help.
“Information to come, might
be a little bit up the way, but it’ll
happen.
“Also, expect an email, those
INVESTMENT:
Investing in the
future of your local
electricity network
From that first cup of coffee, to checking emails and
unwinding in front of Netflix, electricity powers every part
of our day. As we move towards a more sustainable future,
electricity will be the energy source of choice — making it
more important than ever to invest in a reliable, resilient
network that meets our growing needs.
To continue delivering a safe and reliable power supply, we must
invest in our network today to prepare for tomorrow. This means
renewing ageing infrastructure, expanding capacity (including
via smart virtual infrastructure), strengthening resilience, and
adopting new technologies to improve efficiency. The steps we
take now will shape a positive future for generations to come.
Last year we signalled our intention to apply to the Commerce
Commission for a customised price-quality path for the five-year
period from financial year 2028 to 2032. This would allow us to
increase investment in the network, ensuring it remains strong
and future ready.
Since then, we’ve been actively engaging with customers,
stakeholders, and communities. Through detailed analysis and
planning, we’ve developed a proposed investment approach
that outlines the investment needed to maintain and improve
our network, ensuring we continue to meet our customers’
needs and expectations.
Now, we want to hear from you. Your feedback will help shape
our proposal before we submit it to the Commerce Commission
in mid-2026. Read on to find out how we’re powering a cleaner,
brighter future with our community and how you can have your say.
FUTURE FOCUS:
What we
do now
will shape
a positive
future
The topic of power prices has had a lot of airtime recently,
especially following the decision by the Commerce
Commission to allow electricity distribution businesses to
increase lines charges. This decision supports necessary
investment to improve networks and meet growing
customer demands.
At Orion, much of our network was built
in the 1960s and 1970s, meaning critical
infrastructure, such as power poles, now
requires renewal. At the same time, our
region is growing, and we must expand our
network capacity (including via smart virtual
infrastructure), to accommodate more homes
and businesses. We also need to strengthen
resilience against earthquakes and extreme
weather events, prepare for emerging
technologies, and drive efficiencies.
That’s why we’re applying for a customised
price-quality path — or CPP. A customised
path would allow Orion to make targeted
investments to maintain network reliability
and support future demand growth. It
ensures we can continue delivering a highquality
service while keeping pace with the
increasing demands of our community.
Staying on the default path would mean
we won’t recover enough revenue to make
the investments needed. As a result, we
would have to delay essential upgrades,
increasing the risk of more frequent and
prolonged power outages — something
none of us want. Deferring investment also
means facing even higher prices in the
future and a network that struggles to meet
customers’ evolving needs.
For the last 125 years you’ve trusted us to
keep the lights on. That's now expanded
into keeping devices charged, the Wi-Fi
connected, and many more ways we
power our community. We cannot afford to
delay these critical investments. By acting
now, we ensure a reliable, future-proofed
network that will benefit both current
and future generations. Together, we can
create a cleaner, brighter future for Central
Waitaha Canterbury.
Nigel Barbour
The Orion Group Chief Executive
The difference
between default
and customised
price-quality paths
Both types of price-quality path constrain the
amount of revenue we can recover from our
customers and set minimum standards for the
service quality we must deliver. This creates
incentives for us to manage our network efficiently
and discourages us from reducing service quality
to increase profits.
The key difference between the two paths is
how the total revenue amount is determined. For
a default path, the Commission uses a simpler,
standardised approach. This amount is calculated
based on our past expenditure and to some extent
the forward investment proposed in our asset
management plan.
For a customised path, the approach is more
detailed and business specific. We are required
to submit a proposal to the Commission, which
includes detailed information about the challenges
and opportunities our business faces, and our
investment and other spending plans over the
period. This proposal is then subject to in-depth
audit, verification, stakeholder consultation, and
evaluation processes. The Commission will only
approve proposed expenditure to be recovered
through our lines charges if it is prudent and efficient
and in the long-term interests of our customers.
Our network
From the Rakaia to the Waimakariri, Banks
Peninsula to Arthur’s Pass, Orion owns
and operates the electricity distribution
network that provides power to Central
Waitaha Canterbury. Our network extends
over 8,000 square kilometres, delivers
electricity to more than 228,000 homes
and businesses, and connects around
4,000 new customers every year.
As an electricity distributor, we distribute
power from the national grid through our
network to homes and businesses.
Managing such a vast and complex
network — spanning urban centres, rural
communities, and remote locations — is
a big job, requiring careful planning,
continuous improvement, and a dedicated
team to ensure everything runs smoothly.
That’s why it’s important we keep pace with
ASSET MANAGEMENT PLAN:
Our proposed
investment
approach
Our 2025 Asset Management Plan (AMP)
Update lays out the proposed investment
approach for our customised price-quality
path application. Each year we publish an
AMP that details how we plan to manage
our assets. The 2025 AMP Update
comprises two sections:
• Part 1 — outlines our proposed investment
approach for the customised path period.
• Part 2 — provides updated forecasts, and
highlights any material changes since our
2024 AMP.
READY TO RESPOND:
Ramping up our
asset renewals
Increasing our
network capacity
Challenges and opportunities
As we look ahead, our investment approach
is shaped by the unique challenges and
opportunities we face at Orion, making the
need for prudent and efficient investment
in our network more critical than ever.
We must make decisions in the long-term
interest of our customers, as what we do
now will shape a positive future.
Challenges
Asset renewals — Amping up our asset
renewal programme to ensure we can
effectively manage safety risk across the
network and maintain reliability.
Growth — Increasing our network’s
capacity to support forecast population,
demand and economic growth, which is
very strong in parts of our region.
Resilience — Strengthening the network’s
resilience to natural hazards, particularly
earthquakes, to reduce the risk of major
disruptions to the power supply during and
after these events.
Opportunities
Meeting future needs — Preparing for
new technologies that support changing
customer needs and customer choice.
Improving efficiency — Taking advantage
of innovations and integrating new tools
and systems to improve our efficiency.
Strengthening
network resilience
Preparing for new
technologies
Improving
efficiencies
About our proposed approach
Our proposed approach represents our
view of the investments and activities
required to deliver a safe, reliable and
resilient network that meets our customers’
needs, now and for the future.
In total we plan to spend approximately
$1.73 billion over the five years from 01
April 2027 to 31 March 2032. Most of the
proposed spending is capital expenditure
(67%), which is the long-term investments
we plan to make in our physical assets.
The rest is operating expenditure (33%),
which is our day-to-day expenditure to run
the network and support the delivery of
our services.
Focus of our proposed capex investment
• Renewing assets to effectively manage
network risk and maintain reliability.
• Expanding and upgrading the network
to support growth and prepare to meet
future needs.
• Strengthening the network to increase
resilience.
• Renewing and upgrading non-network
assets to support new technologies and
improve efficiency.
Focus of our proposed opex investment
• Maintaining our network assets to keep
them in optimal working condition.
• Managing vegetation around our assets.
• Supporting our network and business
operations.
Keeping the
lights on
You’ve probably seen our Orion trucks with their
distinctive orange reflector stripe around town and
country. But have you ever wondered what the
people driving them are doing?
Our Network Operators are out every day, working
hard to keep your power supply safe, reliable and
resilient. Whether they’re maintaining power lines,
responding to outages, or upgrading the network
to meet future needs, their efforts help keep homes
warm, businesses running, and essential services
operating smoothly.
To better serve our community, we’re proposing
to invest more in our network — renewing ageing
infrastructure, increasing capacity, and improving
resilience. A well-maintained network makes it
easier and safer for our operators to do their jobs.
When equipment is upgraded and systems are
smarter, our teams can prevent issues before they
happen, reduce faults, and restore power faster
when outages occur. This means fewer emergency
callouts in severe conditions, less time spent on
reactive repairs, and more focus on keeping the
network running smoothly.
So next time you see one of our team in the field,
know that they’re working for you — keeping
the power on across our region. And if you ever
experience an issue with your power supply, our
What we’ve
heard so far
What this
means for you
At Orion, we’re committed to listening to our customers and shaping
our plans based on what matters most to you. Through regular
engagement with our customers — including our customer advisory
panel, community workshops, surveys and even the newsletter you’re
reading now — we’ve shared our early thinking on future investments
and gathered valuable insights.
We’ve learned that network reliability, resilience, and affordability is a
priority for customers. The customer advisory panel emphasised safety
and reliability, while noting concerns about price increases, especially for
vulnerable members of the community. Community workshops revealed
that participants value reliability and resilience but also recognise the
need to expand and upgrade network capacity to support demand.
Our 2024 annual perceptions survey showed over 80% satisfaction with
current reliability and highlighted the importance of minimising outages
and quick restoration. Respondents also want us to leverage new
technologies for efficiency and future readiness.
Our proposed investment approach carefully balances risk, reliability,
resilience, and affordability to ensure a strong and future-ready
electricity network. To determine the best path forward we explored
three investment approaches:
• A more limited approach (lower investment, higher risk)
• A balanced approach (our proposed approach)
• An accelerated approach (faster and more investment,
higher short-term costs)
We believe the proposed approach best balances our customers’
priorities, particularly maintaining the reliability of your electricity supply
and the affordability of your power bills. You can find out more about the
investment approaches we considered in our 2025 AMP Update.
Delivering the proposed investment will add an additional $8.00
(+/- $1.00) a month to your distribution lines charges over the five-year
customised path period starting 01 April 2027.
This is in addition to the recent Commerce Commission default path decision
for Orion which will see an increase in distribution lines charges of around
$16 per month on the average residential power bill from 01 April 2025.
Runner digs deep
for Camp Quality
• By Jack Ward
TENIEKE REILLY credits her
resilience for keeping her going
during a run for charity.
Reilly was one of about 700
participants in the Aramex Kiwi
Walk and Run at McLean’s Forest
on Saturday.
Reilly is a volunteer companion
at Camp Quality, a camp for children
living with cancer. She was
running to fundraise $500 for
the charity.
“There were times I wanted to
stop and walk or ease up on how
I was tracking,” Reilly said.
“But focusing on what I was
there for, fundraising for Camp
Quality and giving it my best
shot, I pushed through those
thoughts and barriers and was
able to cross the line and say I
ran/jogged the whole thing while
fundraising for a charity close to
my heart.”
Reilly said the 10.8km run was
the longest she had done
for some time.
“I was feeling rather nervous
leading up to it as it was the longest
distance I had run in a while.
But I was ready to give it my all
and dig into my resilience and
test my ability and my physical
and mental barriers.”
Organisers said participation
was up 9.5% from last year.
• Reilly has so far raised
$360. To help her achieve
her $500 within the next
two weeks, go to https://bit.
TE ARATAI College’s annual
Festival of Nations brought
together 1300 students from 53
nationalities to showcase their
diverse cultures on Friday.
The event, held at Edmonds
Park, featured international
cuisine and performances from
groups representing Nepalese,
Indian, Filipino, Samoan,
Chinese, and other cultures.
Te Aratai head of English
language learning Archana
Martins said the main purpose
of the popular public event
was to give the city’s different
cultures the opportunity to mix
and mingle.
“There’s a lot we can learn from
each other.”
She said the multicultural
groups were eager to “share their
stories” through dance and food.
Looking ahead, Martins
expressed plans to expand the
event next year, with hopes
of inviting every school in
Christchurch to participate.
The Way
We Were
NO 1: A surprised Donella Thomsen is announced as Miss Universe New Zealand in 1981.
Right – Debbie Houghton winning Riccarton Mall junior princess in 1971.
BEAUTY PAGEANT PROTESTS
Whether beauty pageants are
demeaning to women is an ageold
debate.
In the 1980s, Christchurch
pageants were increasingly targeted
by protesters, as second
wave feminism solidified.
A group of women gathered
outside the Town Hall ahead
of the Miss Universe New
Zealand pageant on April 16,
1981. They held placards that
read ‘Beauty contests degrade
women’, ‘Abolish beauty
contests’ and ‘Women are not
sex objects’.
Inside, the packed
auditorium watched Donella
Thomsen, a 21-year-old clerical
typist and hairdresser from
Auckland, take the crown.
The following year, in August
1982, 19-year-old dance
instructor Debbie Houghton
avoided protesters when she
won Miss Canterbury.
“She won from 15 finalists
in front an incident-free
evening at the Merivale Mall.
A preliminary parade last
weekend had been upset by
mice-throwing protestors,” The
Press reported.
Houghton was no stranger
to pageants – she had
previously won six beach girl
contests and had taken out the
Riccarton Mall junior princess
competition a decade earlier.
About 40 protesters were
stopped from entering the mall
by police. The group, called
‘Blood Sisters’, reportedly stood
outside the main entrance
singing, chanting and waving
banners. It included several
men.
The Miss Canterbury pageant
continues to this day, with
2024 winner Paige Sullivan
following in her grandmother’s
heels – Dianna McFarlane had
been crowned Miss Canterbury
in 1958.
Probably Christchurch’s most
well-known beauty pageant
contestant is Lynda McManus,
who won Miss New Zealand in
1986. She was third runner-up
in Miss World later that year,
despite being widely picked
to win.
Retro 300 leading Tank’s SUV invasion
A NEWCOMER with a quirky
name has rumbled onto our
shores in the form of Tank, an
impressive sub-brand of Chinese
manufacturer GWM.
GWM these days is nothing
like the mediocre Great Wall
Motors of 15 years ago. The
transformation of the company
since that time, especially over
the last five years, has been
breathtaking.
Heading the Tank assault on
our market for now are the 500
and 300 models with the latter a
retro-styled medium-sized SUV.
While new to our market, the
300 its been sold in South East
Asia, including China, since
2020. GWM has kept its powder
dry on a Tank invasion here
until now, preferring to wait for
the updated version.
It’s packed with features,
boasts good safety credentials
and four of the five models sold
here are powered by hybrid
engine technology. A turbo
diesel version will be added to
the range later this year, and
should appeal to both townies,
and country folk alike, along
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
with the hunting and fishing
brigade. The 300’s strong offroad
talents should tick a bunch
of boxes with this group of
potential buyers.
GWM is poised to hit the go
button on raft of new vehicles
for our market next year. Six
new models are under starters
orders for the first half of 2025
with more to follow for the back
half of the year.
The first model out of the
2025 blocks for GWM in New
Zealand is the new Cannon
which features a larger 135kW
and 480Nm 2.4 litre turbo-diesel
engine used in its larger sibling,
the Cannon Alpha and comes
with a 3500kg towing capacity.
The Tank 300, with its
distinctive retro SUV looks, was
a great choice to re-launch the
brand here with irrepressible
panache that’s hard to ignore.
Even harder to ignore are
the prices, starting at an
affordable $49,990 for the Lux
2.0 litre turbo petrol – the
hybrid commands a hefty $7k
premium.
In the range-topping Ultra,
the petrol vs hybrid price gap is a
more reasonable $5k. The Ultra
hybrid that rocked up for this
road test retails for $61,990 – a
decent amount of serious luxury
off-roader for the money. This
is amplified even further by a
seven-year unlimited kilometre
warranty with eight years
unlimited cover on the battery
Creating the under-bonnet
magic is a 2.0 litre turbo petrol
engine matched to an electric
motor, providing a collective
heft figure of 258kW of power
and 615Nm of torque. This is
generally well managed through
a nine-speed automatic and a
full-time AWD system.
These ingredients provide
plenty of shove from standing
starts and in the mid-rev range
to easily dispatch most driving
assignments, both on- and offroad.
This is no small achievement
in a vehicle weighing 2305kg,
making it one of the heftier
SUVs in its class. The hybrid
weighs 200kg more than the
petrol-only variant. However,
that is easily offset by the
hybrid’s extra 93kW of thrust.
Overall, the hybrid powertrain
delivers on smoothness and
responsiveness, and engine noise
is well-suppressed even on full
throttle, where you briefly enjoy
a satisfying sporty growl from
the engine.
Rating out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 6; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Space 7; Styling 7; Fuel Economy, road test
average consumption 9.5L/100km; Value for money 9; Safety,
ANCAP 5-star crash test rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
The automatic gearbox is
a newbie, but gave a decent
account of itself, although it is
occasionally let down by odd
clunky moments of gearshift
indecision.
This is a good size SUV at
460mm long, 1930mm wide,
1903mm tall, and perched
on a 2750mm wheelbase – all
measurements that comfortably
shade competitors such as the
Mitsubishi Outlander.
The only figure where the
Tank 300 is lacking is the
modest 400 litres of load space
– well short of the Outlander’s
500+ litres. The passenger
compartment provides plenty
of space both front and rear and
feels light and roomy, despite the
dark hard plastic trim. Fit and
finish is as good as anything else
in this price range.
With a vast array of luxury
features, the Ultra lives up to its
billing as the premium member
of the Tank NZ platoon.
From the outside, it’s a sharplooking
beast with 18-inch alloy
wheels and a side steep for easy
access into the cabin. Once there
you are pampered by imitation
Nappa leather accented seats,
which for the driver have an
eight-way power adjustment plus
memory and massage function
for the two front seats. In-cabin
entertainment is managed via a
12.3-inch colour touch screen.
The Tank 300 doesn’t miss
a beat on safety with most of
the current crash protection
and avoidance systems on
duty, including adaptive cruise
control, 360 degree-view
camera, lane departure warning
and blind spot monitoring.
There is also a chirpy voiceactivated
and annoying drive
monitor system, that calls you
out on almost every minor
driving indiscretion. Once I
figured out how to turn the
system off, it stayed that way
during my time with the 300.
Increasingly manufacturers are
installing these systems to score
the best safety rating.
It’s a case of the tried-andtrue
with the suspension
– double wishbones at the
front and multi-link nonindependent
suspension in the
rear. This slightly more robust
arrangement enables the Tank
300 to traverse more challenging
terrain – something its relishes.
That said, none of my off-road
trekking put it under too much
pressure.
On sealed surfaces in both
town and open road driving, the
suspension was competent, but
not exceptional. At low speeds
over poorly maintained urban
roads, bumps felt more forcible
than would like.
Light and well-weighted
steering makes for a pleasant
enough drive although more
road feel and communication
with the drive would make it
even better.
