Student buzzing after
breaking own world record
• By Jack Ward
RYAN YOON is in his final year
of high school, is deputy head
boy, and has eight jobs.
The Burnside High School
student also holds the Guinness
World Record for fastest man
to run a half marathon while
wearing a beekeeping suit.
Ryan, 17, from Bishopdale,
eclipsed his own world record
by more than 20 minutes
on Sunday, finishing the
Christchurch half marathon in
1hr 36min 24sec.
“I’m feeling a little sore,” he
said on Tuesday. He had suffered
cramp in his hamstring at the
finishline.
Ryan broke the world record
for a half marathon in a
beekeeping suit in December in
Xiamen, China, in a time of 1hr
57min 35sec.
The inspiration behind
wearing the suit was to promote
Ryan’s partnership with Hive
Energy and its natural sports
gel. Ryan is a sales executive
for the Mosgiel-based company
and facilitates a running club
in Christchurch, Hive Runners,
under their brand.
Hive Energy sponsored his
races in China, where he ran
four half marathons in 35 days,
so he decided to create a buzz by
wearing the beekeeping suit for
all of them.
“The interest was the natural
concept around health and
performance. Honey and bees
are quite sustainable,” he said.
Ryan said the beekeeping
suit weighed about 2-3kg. He
had been conditioning himself
ahead of the Christchurch race
by training in the suit for three
hours a week.
“Going to the gym and running
on the treadmill, I had a
few looks from people. I started
with controlled conditions first,
working up to running outside,”
he said.
The goal was to break one hour
and 30 minutes. The suit did
make it difficult.
“When you sweat it accumulates
in the suit and started to get
a bit claustrophobic, the more
you run the heavier it gets, and I
could I barely see anything.”
What got Ryan home was the
support from the home crowd,
he said.
“Definitely the cheers of the
crowd kept me going, had to
fight through – it was physically
demanding and I needed that
mental component to keep going.”
Outside of his record exploits,
Ryan manages social media for
Hive Runners, works at Tas
the marketing for the kebab
shop, petrol station and coffee
student council at Burnside High
for five years and is deputy head
boy.
And he runs a minimum 10
hours a week.
“I love it, it’s good and there is
that social element too.”
Ryan reckons he sleeps an
IN THE SWARM: Ryan
Yoon broke his own world
record on Sunday for
running a half-marathon
in a beekeeping suit. He
suffered cramp at the
finishline.
average six to seven hours a
night.
“I’m constantly working - one
eye shut and one eye open.”
His next half marathon will be
in Wellington in June - this time
not in the beekeeping suit.
“I’ll be so grateful to run
normally and breath fresh air
again,” he said.
Ryan is unsure what he will
study at university next year.
“I’m not quite set with what I
want to do, I have an interest in
management, sports exercise and
physio – or may something with
food technology,” he said.

Rotary Bookarama continues
its winning formula for good
• By Jack Ward
THE BISHOPDALE-Burnside
Rotary Club is celebrating after
another successful Bookarama,
which raised about $80,000 for
the club’s various community
projects.
Club director Keith Walker
said the amount raised was consistent
with recent years.
“In the last five years, we have
raised over $400,000 so it’s
been another very successful
event, was really good. The first
time, $15,000 was raised and we
thought that was good.”
Four containers filled with
about 50,000 books were on offer
at the event, which was held at
Bishopdale Recreation Centre
from Friday to Sunday.
Walker said buyers made a
good dent in the stock.
“Three and a half containers
have been sold.
“It is certainly a win-win, people
get books at a very good price
and we make money to go into
the community.”
Walker said the club had not
yet decided where the money
from this year’s event will go. It
varies from year to year.
“Some of the major benefactors
from Bookarama over the years
have included Burnside Primary
School, Queens Park School,
Youth Hub Trust and the Canterbury
Charity Hospital.
“Youth is a very strong focus
for us, we try to support youth as
much as possible.”
Next year will be the club’s
20th Bookarama, but Walker
said nothing had been discussed
about the milestone as yet.
“For us it is business as usual,
we are looking forward to the
support again.
“We might have a celebration,
but our focus is on another good
result to invest back into the
community.”
Church
fundraiser
a success
• By Jack Ward
ST LUKE’S Yaldhurst
parishioners raised $2259 at their
car boot sale on Saturday.
The sale was a fundraiser for
internal maintenance of the old
church, which was built in 1893.
Parishioner and lifetime Yaldhurst
resident Sue Chappell said
the money raised far exceeded
their $1200 goal.
“We are over the moon, afterwards
we went for a drink at the
pub to celebrate.
“We’re blown away by that
amount, this is all down to the
amazing support, goodwill, and
generosity of the local community
and businesses.”
Chappell said the fundraising
team would debrief after Easter
on how the event went and what
the next fundraiser will be.
“We might apply for a sausage
sizzle at Mitre 10 Hornby, it
doesn’t involve all the work of a
car boot sale,” she said.
Finnegan changed Nina’s life for
NINA ROMAIN says before
she adopted her american
staffordshire Finnegan she was
into cats.
“I thought I was a cat person
for the longest time,” Romain
said.
Romain and Finnegan will
take part in the second year of
Raise the Woof run by Dogwatch
Sanctuary Trust, a fun and
flexible fundraiser that gives
abandoned and needy dogs a
second chance at life.
Participants can take part
at any time during May by
logging their dog walks or kilometres
through their personal
fundraising pages.
Finnegan finished in the top
three last year, clocking up
350km between Romain and her
partner Felix.
“We will do 100km for sure,
he gets walked every day so it’s
easy,” Romain said.
Romain and Finnegan met
when she and Felix adopted the
now three-year-old from Dogwatch.
“We were looking for a dog
who was cat-friendly to live
with June (the cat), he was only
three weeks old – a tiny little
nugget.”
Romain said having moved
to New Zealand from France in
2021, the addition of Finnegan
helped her explore her new
home.
“He has changed our lives for
the better, a nice friendly cuddly
dog, and has made me way more
active and made me discover
Christchurch.
“Such a joyful dog to have.”
Since adopting Finnegan,
Romain has volunteered at
Dogwatch and is now part of the
casual staff.
“I know now I want to work
with dogs.”
Said Dogwatch general
manager Bridget Paterson: “Last
year we were so encouraged
by the enthusiasm from our
community. People walked, ran,
and hiked with their dogs – all to
help raise funds for the dogs in
our care.
“This year we’re making it even
more special by adding a public
dog walk, so people can come
together and show their support
in person too.”
Every dollar raised helps
support Dogwatch’s work
rescuing, rehabilitating, and
rehoming dogs in need.
This year, those donations
will stretch even further thanks
to Calder Stewart, the official
matching sponsor for Raise the
Woof 2025.
The company will match
donations dollar for dollar,
effectively doubling the impact
AT PLAY: Nina Romain
and her dog Finnegan are
taking part in the Dogwatch
Sanctuary Trust’s Raise the
Woof fundraiser during May.
of the fundraiser’s efforts.
Some people take part in
memory of a beloved pet, others
to celebrate the joy dogs bring to
their lives – and all to help dogs
who haven’t yet found a family of
their own.
“It’s thanks to fundraisers like
this that we can give dogs in
need the love, training, and care
they need to thrive,” Paterson
said.
JESSE Winter-Henderson
claimed the top spot at the
Canterbury heat of the New
Zealand certified builders
apprentice challenge in Hornby
on Saturday.
The 22-year-old came back for
redemption after missing out
on placing last year, and said it
felt good to win. He will now
compete at the national final in
Hamilton in June.
Regan Bush, 31, was second
and Toby Baggott, 27, third.
The competition tests apprentices’
carpentry skills under
pressure and is held in partnership
with BCITO. Apprentices
were given eight hours to construct
a planter box, which will
be donated.
“This year’s competition was
definitely harder than last year’s,
but I made sure to put in a lot
of prep during the week, so I
felt ready when the day came,”
Winter-Henderson said.
“It was awesome having my
family and mates there to support
me through it all. I’m really
looking forward to representing
Canterbury at the national
final.”
The finished planter boxes
were assessed for workmanship,
measuring, cutting, assembly,
and attention to detail. Judges
also evaluated each apprentice’s
ability to follow a detailed plan
and apply safe working techniques.
Winter-Henderson is apprenticed
to Brad Keats Builders
and won a $1000 Makita and
Mitre10 Trade prize pack. He
will compete for the Ken Read
Memorial Trophy and a $10,000
prize pack at the nationals.
NZCB chief executive
Malcolm Fleming said the apprentice
Go your
own way
Your home and garden are too
important to be dictated by fleeting
fashions. And the expense and time
that go in to decorating each room
and planting your premises are far
too great to become outdated in a
couple of years.
When you choose your surroundings,
go with what you love. Trends in
interior and garden design may have
little in common with your tastes. So
feel free to ignore those trends and
stay true to yourself.
If all the glossy magazines are
raving about moody metallics or
flamboyant feature walls but you
prefer the much-maligned magnolia,
stick to your guns.
Pale walls make a room
feel so much bigger
You will be much happier in a
room where pale walls make it feel
so much bigger and your favourite
artwork and photos can stand out.
If everyone you know is investing in
minimalist Mid-Century furniture but
you really like Arts & Crafts carved
detailing or buttoned upholstery,
take pride in finding furnishings that
reflect your style.
It might be a bit more difficult if
such items are not stocked in the
shops, but it can be very rewarding
to discover beautiful classics in
antiques or second-hand stores.
Restoring or upcycling them
yourself is even more satisfying — as
well as ensuring you have a unique
asset.
Not sure of your style?
It’s easier than you might think to
identify your style. Which colours
make you feel happy? If you don’t
already know, get a paint chart from
a hardware shops and see which
shades you automatically gravitate
to.Is there a house you admire or a
place that always makes you feel
good — perhaps your hairdresser’s
salon, a cafe with charming decor,
a friend’s room that is especially
inviting, a garden you walk past that
is always worth another look or a
setting that you covet on a television
programme.
What is it that appeals to you —
colours, lighting, textures, shapes,
layout, ornaments...
Note down the elements you
particularly like. You can go online to
interiors websites and scroll through
lots of possibilities. Or you can go
to the public library and borrow
beautiful books on domestic design.
You can take inspiration from all
Always keep in mind what the
revolutionary English designer
Christchurch, meet your
new home style partner:
Choices Flooring
now open in Papanui
The heart of every home begins from
the floor up. That’s the philosophy
behind Christchurch’s newest
destination for flooring and window
furnishings — Choices Flooring
Christchurch, now open at 31a Main
North Road, Papanui.
Owned and operated by locals
Jamie and Karen Harris, this new
showroom represents more than
just a business expansion. It’s a bold
step towards creating a communityfocused
interior destination that
makes home styling effortless,
inspiring and full of possibility.
Jamie Harris is no stranger to
flooring. With more than 20 years
of industry experience — including
his early years working in a Choices
Flooring store in Australia — he knows
what great flooring looks like, how to
install it and what it takes to deliver
a flawless finish. But for Jamie, this
Visit the state-of-the-art
showroom
venture is about more than product
and process. It’s about people.
“I’m not just selling flooring,”
says Jamie. “I’m offering complete
solutions. Good interior decorating
starts from the floor up — and
we’re here to grow alongside
the community that supports us.
Together, we want to pave the way
for a future where both our business
and Christchurch thrive hand in
hand.”
Jamie and Karen already run
Venluree Curtains and Blinds in
Christchurch. Their decision to bring
the Choices Flooring brand into their
fold was a strategic and natural
progression — combining flooring
and window furnishings under one
roof to create a seamless, one-stop
experience for homeowners.
After visiting the Choices Flooring
head office, the pair were blown
away by their exclusive product
ranges, innovation and support
systems. They immediately knew
it would pair perfectly with their
existing business.
Their impressive 430-squaremetre
showroom has been
transformed into a state-of-theart
showroom, equipped with the
latest Choices Flooring innovations
— including the Inspiration Station,
Digital Screens, and RoomView
technology. These tools make
it effortless for customers to
visualise how any product will
look in their own space. With
thousands of flooring and window
furnishing samples on display in
a beautifully styled, natural lightfilled
environment, it’s truly a dream
space for anyone planning their
perfect home.
The store is backed by a wellestablished
workforce, including
qualified interior designers and staff
training to become interior designers
— all ready to guide customers with
confidence. Whether you prefer
browsing in-store or selecting from
the comfort of home, their mobile
vans come stocked with hundreds
of flooring and window furnishing
samples, bringing the showroom
experience straight to your door.
Build Buy Renovate 3
Leading the charge on the floor is
manager Ana Fletcher, who brings
passion and expertise to every
consultation. “It’s a dream come
true,” Ana says. “To sit down in
someone’s home or in our amazing
showroom and walk them through
their colours and finishes — helping
them find the most fantastic
selections — is what it’s all about.”
Installation is another top priority.
Jamie’s roots in the industry
began with his father, a respected
Christchurch installer for over 45
years. Now, with Tony Cotton — a
lifelong friend and one of the best in
the business — taking on the role of
Measurer and Installation Manager,
quality installations are guaranteed.
As the business grows, Jamie
plans to invest in the community’s
next generation of talent, bringing in
flooring apprentices under Newfurn’s
Registered Training Organisation-
CTI, to build a local team of trained
and passionate professionals.
Choices Flooring Christchurch is
Helping our community grow
Whether you’ve just moved into
a new home and want to put
your stamp on it, or you just want
a refresh for your living spaces,
renovating your home can be an
exciting – and daunting – task.
However, you can relieve a lot
of stress before you even start
by setting yourself a budget so
you don’t end up with any nasty
surprises along the way.
Be realistic from the start
Before you even start your plans,
take some time to assess how much
you can really afford to spend.
When working out your budget be
sure to include everything, such as
the cost of materials, labour, and
permits.
To help design your budget, reach
out to contractors and suppliers for
quotes to help build an idea in your
head of what each aspect is likely to
cost. It’s also a good idea to factor in
a contingency fund for unexpected
expenses – aim for this to be around
10-20% of your total budget.
If you’re thinking renovating more
than one room, or your entire home,
set an overall budget and then
break it down for each room.
Get planning
With a budget in mind, you can
now start to actually plan what
renovations you’d like. Making lists is
the easiest way to do this – in fact,
lists will be your friends throughout
the whole renovation process.
Break down your renovation tasks
by priority – you can do this by
distinguishing between essential
repairs (e.g. fixing a leaky roof) and
aesthetic upgrades (e.g. new marble
countertops). This will help you stay
focused and allocate your budget
more efficiently.
Track your spending
This one may sound obvious, but
you’d be surprised how easy it is
to get swept up in the excitement
of planning and overseeing your
renovations and completely losing
track of your budget.
You can use a spreadsheet to
keep an eye on mounting costs
or stick to an old-school pen and
paper list – whatever your preferred
method, just make sure you’re
updating it regularly and accurately.
Do it yourself?
You can help keep your costs lower
by doing some basic renovations
yourself – tasks such as painting
walls, landscaping your outdoors
spaces and even tiling are things
you may be able to do by yourself.
However, for things like plumbing,
electrics, structural changes, and
fitting new windows should be firmly
left to the experts – or you might
end up with a costly mistake on your
hands.
Step-by-step
Looking for a simple, striking and cost-effective way
to transform your space? Creating a feature wall using
Resene paint is just the ticket.
How to paint
a feature wall
Choosing to paint a wall in
a feature colour is one of the
most low-cost, high-impact
ways you can make a change
to your home. It’s also a great
project for the cooler months as
you can stay dry and warm indoors
while you get the painting done.
As always, proper preparation
is key to getting the best, most
professional looking results.
In terms of colour, remember
that it is your home so you can be
as bold and daring as you like.
The beauty of a feature wall is that
an impactful colour won’t completely
overwhelm the space. Specific
colours can create a different vibe
and ambiance to a room. We’ve
painted this bedroom in Resene
Dream Big, a restful sky blue.
For more advice visit your local
Resene ColorShop or reseller.
You will need:
• Resene drop cloth
• Painter’s tape
• Safety gear
• Resene Interior
Paintwork Cleaner
• Microfibre cloth
• Resene EzyFill Quick
• Scraper
• 100 grit sandpaper
• Dusting brush
• Resene Quick Dry
waterborne primer
undercoat
• Paintbrushes
• Resene Acrylic Undercoat
(optional, depending on how
much your colour is changing)
• Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen
in your chosen colour (we used
Resene Dream Big)
• Resene #7 Smooth
Surfaces roller sleeve
• Extendable roller pole
• Paint roller tray
Step-by-step
1 Protect Move your furniture
as far away from the wall as you
can to ensure you have enough
room to work, as well as keeping
it away from paint splatters. Place
a drop cloth down and secure it
with painter’s tape for extra peace
of mind. Use painter’s tape to mask
off the areas you don't want to get
paint on.
2 Clean, fill, sand Spray the
wall with Resene Interior Paintwork
Cleaner and wipe it down with a
microfibre cloth. Use Resene EzyFill
Quick to fill any holes in the wall
and wait for it to dry, then sand
with 100 grit sandpaper. Wipe
or brush away sanding dust with
a dusting brush
or microfibre cloth.
3 Prime For the areas that
were filled, spot prime with
Resene Quick Dry. Then on the
entirety of the wall, apply Resene
Acrylic Undercoat – we’ve used
this because the colour is going
from dark to light.
4 Paint Give your Resene
SpaceCote Low Sheen a good
stir then decant into your paint
tray and apply the first coat using
a roller and extension pole. Wait
the recommended drying time
before applying your second coat.
Remove the painter’s tape and
you’re done!
Top tip: For the best finish,
make sure you load your
paint roller with enough
paint – it should resemble
a hot dog dipped in batter.
Why choose blue?
Blue is one of the most
with feelings of calm and
in an on-trend hue. This is an
ideal winter weekend project
– it’s a quick and cost-effective
transformation that instantly
updates and brightens your
home. Using Resene Sandtex
Mediterranean effect provides an
authentic, textured finish and turns
your fireplace into a true statement
piece. Fireplace surrounds can be
finished in a range of materials.
Your Resene ColorShop team can
help you with the right prep for yours.
If your fireplace surround is too hot
to touch when the fire is lit, it’s best
to leave it unpainted – you could
focus on creating a feature wall
behind it instead.
Top tip: Resene Sandtex
can be tinted to a wide
range of Resene colours
meaning you can skip the
need to apply coloured
topcoats. Or you can
apply your chosen colour
over the top for a
different colour effect.
You will need:
• Resene drop cloth
• Painter’s tape
• Plastic masking film
• Resene Interior
Paintwork Cleaner
• Microfibre cloth
• 180 grit sandpaper
• Safety gear
• Dusting brush
• Resene Waterborne
Sureseal
pigmented sealer
• Resene paint pots
• Assorted paintbrushes
• Resene #1 Easy Reach roller kit
• Resene Sandtex Mediterranean effect
• Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen
waterborne enamel (we used
Resene Cabbage Pont)
Resene Quarter Parchment
Resene Biscotti
Resene Alabaster
Resene Cabbage Pont
Resene Colorwood Whitewash
1 Protect Place your Resene
drop cloth down and secure
with painter’s tape. To protect
the fireplace from any sanding
debris and paint, cover it with
plastic masking film secured
with painter’s tape.
2 Clean and sand Spray the
tiles and hearth with Resene
Interior Paintwork Cleaner and
wipe down with a microfibre cloth.
Lightly sand the surfaces with
180 grit sandpaper – don’t forget
your safety gear! Brush away all
sanding dust.
3 Seal Apply one coat of Resene
Waterborne Sureseal pigmented
sealer to the tiles on the surround
and hearth. Cut in with a brush first,
then use a brush or roller to cover
the rest of the surface. Allow to dry.
4 Add texture Apply a coat of
Resene Sandtex Mediterranean
effect – we only applied it to the
vertical tiles, not on the hearth
– and allow it to dry before
applying a second coat. Bring
out the texture by using a brush
and applying it in a criss-cross
motion or stipple. This process
can be repeated multiple times
to achieve your desired texture
result – the more coats you apply,
the more rustic and textured the
finish will be.
5 Colour the texture Once
you’re happy with the texture
and the Resene Sandtex has
fully dried, it’s time to add some
colour. Apply two coats of Resene
SpaceCote Low Sheen using a
brush, allowing dry time between
coats. We used the gorgeous green
colour Resene Cabbage Pont.
To create a limewash effect, use
Resene FX Paint Effects Medium.
6 Paint the hearth Apply a coat
of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen
to the hearth area. Allow the first
coat to fully dry before applying
the second coat.
7 Finishing touches When all the
paint is dry, remove the masking
film from around the fireplace and
you’re done!
Did you know? If the day
you’ve chosen to paint is
particularly chilly, you can
use Resene Wintergrade
Additive in your
waterborne
Resene paint to
help it cure.
Improve your home
with insert windows
With the weather starting to cool
down and winter well and truly on
its way, it’s the ideal time to start
thinking about your windows and
doors to keep your home cosy
throughout the colder months.
If you’re living in an older home,
chances are that your windows
aren’t as good as they used to
be, but insert windows and doors
from Design Windows could be the
solution.
With insert windows, an expert
from Design Windows will simply
insert a new aluminum window into
the existing timber window frame.
This allows you to keep the charm
and character of your original
timber casing, trim and flashings,
but has the benefit of watertight
seals and less ongoing maintenance
as years go by.
As well as making your home
more secure and enhancing
its thermal performance, insert
windows also allow you to change
the configuration and colour of your
joinery to freshen up your home.
Design Windows can usually have
insert installation completed with
two to three days, meaning you
don’t need to wait weeks to have the
windows of your dreams.
All insert windows can be fitted
with ThermalHeart+®- a range of
code-meeting, industry-leading,
thermally efficient products that
have been designed and made in
New Zealand for exactly how we live.
ThermalHeart+® can almost
double the performance of standard
aluminium windows and doors –
saving you money on your energy
bills and leaving your home warmer
and drier.
Insert windows are also offered
in Klima uPVC that offers great
protection during the coldest winter
weather, while also withstanding
the harshest sunlight during the
summer.
You may think of your garden as a
seasonal space that you can only
really get the most out of during
the spring and summer, but it’s not
hard to create a space that remains
beautiful and functional throughout
every season.
With a bit of planning and the right
choices, you can enjoy your outdoor
space no matter the weather.
To keep your garden looking its
best year-round, choose plants that
offer something for every season.
As we head into autumn, go for
ornamental grasses and asters,
and add in evergreen trees and
shrubs, mixed with perennials that
maintain their colours and structure
throughout the colder months.
When the weather gets warmer you
can liven things up with bursts of
colourful flowers, including tulips,
daffodils, and roses.
Hardscaping elements, such as
paths, patios, and fences, can also
help to add structure and interest
Choose plants that offer
something for every season
Transform your garden
into a year-round oasis
whatever the season.
These features can also help
define spaces for outdoor dining
or relaxation. Adding a fire pit
or a gazebo can create a cozy
atmosphere for cooler months,
while a well-placed pergola or trellis
can add vertical interest in warmer
weather.
Adding in a water feature, such as
a pond, fountain, or even a birdbirth
can all help to boost your outdoor
spaces, whatever the weather. Go
for low-maintenance options to
keep it simple.
With the plants, patios and water
feature sorted, another easy way to
extend the use of your garden when
days are shorter is to install outdoor
lighting. Solar lights along paths,
string lights around a seating area,
or spotlighting on key plants can
all help to enhance your garden’s
beauty after dark, while a firepit
does double duty offering light and
a heat source.
10 Build Buy Renovate
To buy or to build?
which will save you money in the
long-term. Older homes, might
require a substantial – and costly –
amount of upgrades to get the same
specifications. This also makes your
home more ‘future-proof’ than an
older existing property.
Alongside this, newly built homes
will require less maintenance – at
least in the immediate future – than
an older property. The plumbing,
electrics, heat pump, and appliances
will all be brand-new meaning you
won’t need to worry about costly
repairs.
So which is best?
Ultimately, there is no right or
wrong choice here – the decision
to buy or build will come down to
your priorities, lifestyle, budget and
timeline.
Both come with positives and
negatives, so make sure you
think carefully and weigh up both
options before you make any major
decisions.
When it comes to finding your
dream home, one of the first
questions you need to ask yourself
is: “Do I build, or do I buy?’
Like many things in life there isn’t
a simple answer – both buying
and building come with their own
advantages and challenges but
understanding what each option
entails is a great place to start.
Considering buying?
Buying an existing home is
usually the quickest and most
straightforward option, which makes
it a great choice for first-time buyers.
Not only that, but it tends to be
cheaper – yes, you’ll still need to
hand over a pretty sizable deposit
and legal fees but once that’s
done it’s done. You won’t need to
worry about paying for permits,
construction costs or other hidden
expenses. You may also find yourself
in a position to negotiate on price,
depending on how long the property
has been on the market and how
motivated the seller is.
It’s also quicker – you’ll be able to
move into your home as soon as all
the paperwork is done and the sale
is completed, rather than waiting
around.
Alongside this, buyers often
benefit from being in an established
neighbourhood, with local schools,
shops, cafes and other amenities
nearby.
Finally, buying a house can be
a lot less stressful and requires
less commitment and energy, in
comparison to building – you won’t
need to worry about architects and
building firms, just buy it and move.
Considering building?
When it comes to building your
home, the biggest – and most
exciting – benefit is that you have
complete control on the design
and how the end property will look.
You choose how everything from
the layout, to the design, and those
all-important finishing touches –
meaning you don’t have to comprise.
Of course, with it being a brandnew
home you can also choose to
include the latest technology – and
make it a truly smart home – as
well as ensuring its energy-efficient,
Create a detailed plan that includes your
objectives and goals, design vision, and timelines
Common renovation
mistakes and how to
avoid them
Renovating your home can – and should be exciting – but it’s not
without its potential pitfalls. Whether this is your first ever renovation
project, or part of much bigger plans – here’s five common mistakes
and how you can avoid them.
Not setting a realistic budget
When it comes to home improvements, a budget
is your friend, but it can be easy to underestimate
how much it’s going to cost.
Thankfully, it can be avoided with a bit of forward
planning. When you’re creating your budget,
ensure that you’re aware of, and include, permits
and potential unexpected repairs. You can check
out our handy guide to budgeting on page 4 for
more information.
Not having a plan
Home renovations are exciting, but rushing in will
end in disaster and could end up being a very
costly mistake. Without a clear plan and end goal
in place, you risk making the wrong decisions
along the way.
You can avoid this, by – you’ve guessed it
– making a plan. Create a detailed plan that
includes your objectives and goals, design vision,
and timelines. If your renovations are on the more
extensive side, then you may want to consult an
architect or a designer to make sure what you
hope is achievable.
Skipping the professionals
There are plenty of smaller DIY jobs that most folks
can turn their hand to without too much effort,
such as painting or even tiling.
However, for things such as structural changes,
re-wiring, and plumbing it’s always best to call in
the experts. Unless you’re a professional carrying
out these sorts of tasks can be dangerous, not to
mention expensive.
Of course, avoiding this one is easy – know your
limitations and call out the professionals for expert
jobs. Make sure you hire properly licensed tradies
who will ensure the job is done, and done well.
Neglecting permits
Rushing in and starting major structural work can
leave you seriously out of pocket, and may result
in all of your hard work being pulled down. Not
ideal.
It’s easy enough to avoid this one – if you’re
planning any major works, that includes building
or structural changes make sure you check if
you need to apply for any permits before you get
going.

Spotlight on educational and sacred spaces
THE ANNUAL festival of
architectural excellence, Open
Christchurch, returns from May
2-4 with a celebration of the city’s
architecture and several diverse
architectural experiences on offer
in the western suburbs.
This year’s festival, presented by
Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture
and City Making, canvasses 51
buildings, two designed landscapes,
five guided walks and
more than 40 activities, making
up its largest programme to date.
Festival attendees looking
for an architectural experience
to engage the younger folk are
invited to explore the lively,
nature-based Wilderness Early
Learning Centre from 9am-1pm
on Saturday, May 3.
Those keen to learn more
about this inspired example of
adaptive re-use can book in for a
free architecture and landscape
tour with Henry Read and Sean
Dixson on the hour.
Te Manawa Atawhai Catherine
McAuley Centre, one of the
most striking buildings in this
year’s programme, is open for
exploration on Saturday, May 3
from 9am-1pm.
This sacred space encapsulates
the Irish Sisters of Mercy’s arrival
to Hokitika’s rainforests in 1878
and their bicultural teachings,
linking the Mercy story with te
ao Māori through its design. The
architect, Hamish Shaw, is leading
free bookable architecture tours at
9.30 and 10.30am.
OPEN CHRISTCHURCH: Festival attendees will have the chance to explore The Wilderness
Early Learning Centre (top left), the Te Manawa Atawhai Catherine Mcauley Centre (top right),
Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple (bottom left), and Riccarton House.
PHOTOS: GRANT DAVIS/SAM HARTNETT/PEANUT PRODUCTIONS/RICCARTON HOUSE
Attendees are also invited to
head inside the Fo Guang Shan
Buddhist Temple, where Eastern
arts are expressed in western
architecture, on Saturday, May
3 and Sunday, May 4 from 9am-
3pm. Ian Bisman, formerly of
Warren & Mahoney, is leading free
and bookable quick-fire design
talks on both days at 9am.
Open Christchurch is delighted
to include Riccarton House in
this year’s programme, and offer
visitors all-areas-access between
noon and 3pm on Saturday, May
3 and Sunday, May 4.
This is a unique opportunity to
explore all parts of the heritage
building, see the first flushing
toilet in Canterbury and learn
more about the significant
historic homestead, which was
built for one of Canterbury’s
earliest colonial settlers.
History buffs are also
encouraged to visit Canterbury
University’s Macmillan Brown
Library on a free, bookable trip
into the archives for a look at
pre-eminent Gothic Revival
architect Benjamin Mountfort’s
original architectural drawings
with leading expert Dr Ian
Lochhead on Sunday, May 4 at
11am or noon.
While at the Ilam campus,
visit the three other buildings the
university is opening up for the
festival: Brutalist beacon Puaka-
James Hight Central Library,
plus the Ernest Rutherford and
Beatrice Tinsley buildings. Book
in for a free engineering tour
with Dr Guiseppe Loporcaro
at 11am or noon for a look into
seismic engineering innovation
or a free architecture tour with
Jasmax principal architect Vanessa
Carswell at 1pm.
Modernist masterpiece College
House is also open, with students
leading bookable, guided tours
through the a hall of residence that
Sir Miles Warren considered to be
his and Maurice Mahoney’s best
work. The chapel, dining room
and art collection are particular
highlights.
Join in for a celebration of our
city’s architecture and enjoy a
good nosey behind closed doors in
the process.
Easter treats
transformed
If you get too many Easter
treats this year, how
about transforming
them instead of tossing
them, write the team
from Love Food Hate Waste
EASTER OFTEN brings an
abundance of seasonal delights –
from chocolate eggs and buttery
hot-cross buns to vibrant, hardboiled
eggs from colourful egg
hunts.
While it is a joy to indulge in
these festive treats, it is easy to
find your kitchen overflowing
with leftovers. Instead of letting
these goodies go to waste, why not
transform them into something
fresh and delicious?
Hot-cross buns are a
quintessential Easter treat, but
they often lose their freshness
quickly.
Instead of letting them go to
waste, blitzing them into crumbs
is a clever trick; these crumbs can
add crunch to a fruit crumble
topping or bring flavour to
homemade stuffing.
Like all breads, hot-cross buns
freeze beautifully. Pull them apart
and pop them into a freezer-safe
bag, or slice them in half before
freezing for easy toasting.
They also make a delightful base
for bread and butter pudding or
can be turned into French toast for
a special breakfast treat. If savoury
is more your style, cube the buns,
toss them with oil and herbs, and
bake until crisp to create unique
croutons perfect for soups and
salads.
Easter morning brings the joy
of chocolate eggs, but sometimes
there are more than you can
handle. The good news? Chocolate
is wonderfully versatile! Melt it
and drizzle over fruit, pancakes,
ice cream, or desserts for an
instant treat.
You could also whip up a
no-bake chocolate slice or chop
the chocolate into chunks to mix
through cookie dough or brownie
batter.
Chocolate also freezes
beautifully. Simply chop it into
small pieces, store in an airtight
container, and have it ready for
your next baking creation or as a
sweet boost to granola or trail mix.
If Easter egg hunts have left you
with a basket full of hard-boiled
eggs, there are plenty of ways
to use them up. A curried egg
sandwich is a simple yet flavourful
option – just mix chopped eggs
with mayonnaise, curry powder,
and a pinch of salt for a satisfying
filling.
For something with a bit more
longevity, try pickling your hardboiled
eggs. Preserve them in a jar
with vinegar, beetroot, and spices,
and you will have a tasty snack
that adds a vibrant touch to salads.
Another great idea is to upgrade
a bowl of instant ramen by slicing
in a hard-boiled egg along with
any leftover veges for a nourishing
upgrade.
When it comes to reducing
Easter food waste, storage is just as
important as creativity.
Airtight containers help
maintain freshness, and labelling
everything using an Eat Me
First Sticker ensures nothing is
forgotten at the back of the fridge.
For chocolate, keep it in a
cool, dry place away from direct
sunlight to avoid blooming (that
white, powdery appearance that
can affect taste). When freezing
baked goods like hot-cross buns,
wrapping them individually
prevents freezer burn and makes
defrosting simple and easier to
portion.
Easter is a time of joy, and with
a little ingenuity, it can also be a
time of sustainability. By finding
new ways to use up chocolate,
fresh and hard-boiled eggs, and
hot-cross buns, you are not only
reducing food waste but also
stretching your budget and adding
delicious variety to your meals.
Whether you are baking,
pickling, or reinventing, every
small action makes a big difference
in creating a more sustainable
kitchen.
No bake chocolate slice
Ingredients
150g butter
¼ cup cocoa
1 tin (395g) condensed milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
250g roughly crushed plain
biscuits and cereal
Icing
150g chocolate
50g butter
Method
• Line a square tin with baking
paper. Set aside.
• Place butter, cocoa powder
and condensed milk in a large
saucepan on the stove over
medium heat. Gently stir as
the butter melts and continue
stirring until the ingredients have
combined. Remove from the heat
and stir in vanilla.
• Add crushed biscuits and
cereal to the rest of the ingredients
and mix through.
• Transfer mixture into the
lined square tin, spread and flatten
using the back of a spoon until it is
packed tight and smooth.
• Melt the chocolate and butter
together, pour over the slice and
spread to cover the top.
• Place in the fridge for about
two hours, or until set.
• Slice with a sharp knife and
store in an airtight container.
Tips
• For extra flavour and texture
you can add in desiccated coconut,
chopped nuts and fruit.
• To turn this into a peppermint
slice, add a layer of peppermint
icing before the chocolate icing.
