In the shadow of loss, Jack
held on for final goodbyes
• By Dylan Smits
JACK CLARK knew he only
had a short time to live but kept
a smiling face for his family until
the end.
The 91-year-old died at Christchurch
Hospital on April 5, two days
after a car crash that killed his
wife, Anne, 79. The couple had
been driving from their home in
Akaroa to Christchurch.
This week, Anne’s son and Jack’s
stepson, Ed Catherwood, spoke
to The Star about Jack’s final days.
Medical staff worked tirelessly to
keep him comfortable and alive
in the hope his sons could arrive
from the United States to say
goodbye.
“Unfortunately they did not
make it in time but one of his sons
was able to speak with him on the
phone,” said Catherwood.
While going through a family’s
worst nightmare, Jack’s New
Zealand-based loved ones were
able to speak with him in hospital
following five hours of surgery on
the day of the crash.
Catherwood arrived in from
Auckland about midnight and
met his daughter Charlotte, who
is studying in Christchurch, at the
hospital.
“He was smiling as much
as he could for us and trying
to be as buoyant as he could,”
Catherwood said.
FROM GREAT-great to brand
new, the Calender-Kennedy-
Caldwell family gathering had
five times the charm.
At the heart of the moment
was Margaret Calender, who
recently became a great-greatgrandmother
with the birth of
baby Riley Caldwell.
Margaret, 94, met Riley for
the first time at Elms Court rest
home, surrounded by her family
– great-granddaughter Emma
Kennedy, 20, who is Riley’s mum;
Emma’s dad Greg Kennedy, 47;
and Margaret’s daughter Marilyn
Calender, 68, who is Greg’s mum.
“I feel old, but it was nice to
see everyone all there,” Margaret
said.
Emma said it was “very special”
to have five generations of the
family in one place.
“It was actually quite emotional
for me. Especially for my great
nana (Margaret) to meet little
miss Riley,” she said.
“My dad and nana are quite
busy with work and now I’ve got
the little one, so we don’t all get to
catch up as much as we’d like. But
we all made the time.”
Emma, now navigating life as a
new mum, said the generational
gathering reminded her of why
Panelbeater goes under owing more than $600k
A COMPANY running a panel
shop repairing vehicles has gone
under owing just over $600,000
in unpaid staff payments, tax
and other bills.
NZ Panel, a Christchurch
business under shareholder and
director Warnakulasuriya Dilanka
Niroshan Fernando, was
placed in liquidation on April 3.
The total estimated shortfall
is understood to include about
$10,000 owed in staff wages and
holiday pay, $300,000 in unpaid
bills to the IRD, and $300,000
owed to unsecured creditors.
Insolvency Matters’ insolvency
practitioner Brenton Hunt filed
the first liquidators’ report on
April 8. The initial report said
NZ Panel had gone into insolvency
because it had been struggling
with working capital.
The company’s core business
was closed last August with a
new operator taking over the site
and partial trading continuing
at a reduced level.
The director has since relocated
to Australia and the IRD
has started recovery action. After
seeking professional advice,
Fernando placed the company
into voluntary liquidation.
The liquidator will investigate
the company’s trading history,
looking for any insolvent transactions
undervalued in the two
years before liquidation.
Unsecured creditors include
ACC, IRD and staff and the
named secured creditors were
KM Finance, Heartland Bank
and Resene Automotive.
The liquidator initially found
all the plant and equipment was
sold by the director before the
business went into liquidation,
Five generations come together,
one special moment for family
LEGACY: With the arrival of baby Riley, there are now five living generations of the
Calender-Kennedy-Caldwell family. From left to right, Emma Kennedy, Greg Kennedy,
Margaret Calender, Riley Caldwell and Marilyn Calender. Matriarch Margaret was able to
spend some one-on-one time with her great-great granddaughter during the visit.
parenthood is a beautiful thing.
Marilyn said she never expected
to be a great-grandmother.
“It’s rare to have five generations,
and with mum in not great
health, we were all adamant we
needed to get together and get
this photo done.”
which will be investigated. A
vehicle owned by the company
is to be returned to a finance
company. Initial investigations
also indicated an overdrawn
shareholder account.
At this stage it looks like there
will be no funds available to unsecured
creditors, the liquidator
said. But this would depend on
the progress of the liquidation.
Secured creditors are normally
paid in the first case followed
by preferential creditors then
unsecured creditors and finally
shareholders.
As she is young for a greatgrandmother,
Marilyn still works
and has been on the receiving end
of jokes saying how ‘great’ she is.
Motorway speed limit
raised to 110km/h
Motorists using the Southern
Motorway are able to travel at
110km/h after the speed limit
was lifted along the 17.7km
section of road on Sunday. The
increase was supported by 68%
of the almost 4000 submissions
made to the NZ Transport
Agency on the change. It is
the first 110km/h speed limit
introduced in the South Island.
The new limit will save drivers
about 60sec along the 17.7km
section between Curletts Rd
and Rolleston.
Bikes back on buses
during daytime hours
Canterbury buses can carry
bikes on front-mounted racks
again. A temporary exemption
issued by NZTA came into
force yesterday. It allows buses
to carry bikes during the
daytime until a permanent
solution to NZTA’s safety
concerns can be found. NZTA
determined in October the way
some bus models were fitted
with bike racks can partially
obscure their headlights.
House prices
fall by $6000
The median house price in
Christchurch dropped slightly
to $700,000, down from
$706,000 in March last year,
a Real Estate Institute of New
Zealand report has found. The
price stability was attributed
to a combination of factors,
including a steady supply
of new housing, balanced
demand, affordability and
sustained population growth.
Stroke, trauma behind Callum’s
• By Kees Chalmers
TEN YEARS ago, Callum
Templeton suffered a potentially
life-threatening stroke.
On Saturday, he earned his
green shirt for 250 parkruns.
It coincided with the one-year
anniversary of Scarborough
parkrun, which he founded.
A decade ago, Templeton,
52, was a regular runner and
assumed himself fit, active and
healthy.
One morning, he woke up to
see off his daughter, who was
competing in the Weet-bix Kids
TRYathlon.
“Apparently I wished them
good luck three times, I walked
down the hallway and I said to
my wife, ‘I don’t feel so good’ and
then collapsed to the floor,” he
said.
Templeton had suffered a right
coronary artery stroke and was
rushed to hospital, where he
spent the next nine days.
Doctors discovered the stroke
was caused by a hole in his heart,
which was allowing blood clots
through, a condition developed
from birth.
He was offered a tissue
plasminogen activator, but it
came with risks.
“One in eight make a full
recovery; one in 20, it can go bad.
“Apparently I agreed to it and
said, ‘I’ve got no other option’.”
Luckily for Templeton, the
medication worked.
He spent three months in rehab
where he slept four to five times
a day, after which he had a patent
foramen ovale procedure to close
the hole.
He did little physical activity
for the next year, to allow himself
to fully recover. During that time
his speech was hindered and constant
tiredness caused polarising
mood swings.
Templeton then set himself the
challenge of running 1000kms
over 365 days, which he completed.
Seven years ago, he started
taking part in the Hagley
parkrun with his son, which only
reinvigorated his passion for
running.
“I wanted to see how far I
could push myself until I got to
the point where I was running
2500ks a year and then started
marathons and ultra-marathons,”
he said.
He has run the Christchurch
marathon, the Krayzie Midwinter
Backyard Ultra, and took part
in a Team New Zealand verses
Team Australia challenge
during Covid where he was
running more than 100kms a
week to stay in the top 10 in the
country.
“I decided I didn’t want the
COMEBACK: Callum Templeton after completing his 250th parkrun on Saturday, and in
hospital 10 years ago, after suffering a potentially life-threatening stroke.
stroke to be the defining moment
in my life. I wanted it to just be
something that had happened
and that I was strong and I
could get up every day and be
better,” he said.
Templeton’s addiction to
running was fuelled by a void
left after quitting alcohol and
excessive eating.
His addictions came from
the trauma of being sexually
assaulted by a person in his
neighbourhood when he
was seven.
“I’m pretty sure I blamed
myself for a long time. I thought
it was my fault, I thought I
deserved it,” he said.
He was also bullied throughout
school, and struggled with
relationships because of his
trauma.
Templeton said when he
worked up the courage to tell his
parents about the sexual assault,
they did not take action, which
only reinforced his self-blame.
At 14, he started selling books
out of his bedroom to buy alcohol
as a coping mechanism.
“I was using that (alcohol) to
numb the pain that was inside
me, because I just couldn’t figure
it out.
“I engaged in some pretty stupid
behaviour, I was just a mess,”
he said.
When Templeton was 21, he
was diagnosed with epilepsy
after having a seizure.
He would have seizures
sporadically for seven years
before finding out alcohol was a
trigger for his epilepsy.
He decided to quit drinking for
good and has not had a sip since.
“I kind of needed something
and food became the thing for
a while, I got pretty big and that
led to walking, which led to
jogging, which led to running.”
When Templeton started
participating in the Hagley
parkrun, his lack of confidence
left him at the back of the pack,
but the event’s inclusive nature
brought him out of his shell.
He became a volunteer, then
started his own parkrun at
Scarborough.
“If someone had said to me,
in seven years time, you’re
gonna start your own parkrun, I
would’ve laughed.
“But you get surrounded by
people who lift you up so you
know you can do it.”
Templeton organised a group
of volunteers and started preparing
the parkrun in January last
year. It was up and running
within four months.
The first event attracted 286
participants. It regularly has 210
runners and walkers every Saturday
morning.
parkrun success
INCLUSIVE: Templeton with his Scarborough parkrun crew.
“It wouldn’t have come together
and it wouldn’t have been this
successful if it hadn’t been for the
volunteers, they’re the ones who
make it, otherwise it would’ve
been just a dream.
“With Scarborough (parkrun),
it’s given me purpose, I’ve found
my tribe of people.”
Templeton’s awareness of being
unheard has motivated him to
give others a safe space to be seen
and included.
“(Parkrun) gives you an inclusive
space every week to turn up
and be yourself.
“People cheer as much for the
person who comes last as they do
for the person who comes first,”
he said.
Crime-fighting tech
sparks privacy fears
THE
POLL
starnews.co.nz
THE USE of facial recognition
technology has become a valuable
tool to prevent retail crime, despite
fears it is an invasion of privacy and
can be used to track people without
their consent.
A trial of the technology in 25
New World and Pak’nSave stores
has now finished. It was estimated
to have helped prevent 100 “serious
harmful events” but also misidentified
nine people.
Now Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith
wants to make facial recognition
technology a permanent tool in
the fight against retail crime.
Retail crime is estimated to cost
about $2.6 billion a year and Goldsmith
has already announced plans
to broaden citizens’ arrest powers.
Facial recognition technology
is a key part of the Government’s
plan to tackle retail crime, which
includes strengthening the trespass
law and introducing on-the-spot
fines for shoplifting.
Goldsmith has been laying the
groundwork to extend the use of
facial recognition technology.
“I’m on the side of being as enabling
as we can, primarily because
the strong feedback we’ve had, certainly
in the trial, (is) that it diffuses
the situation,” Goldsmith told the
New Zealand Herald.
“If you know somebody’s come
IT COULD still be months before
a speed limit reduction is even
considered for Sheffield, following
the death of a pedestrian.
Truck driver Rob McKinley, 66,
was struck and killed by a ute while
crossing State Highway 73 on his
way to the Sheffield Pies shop at
6.30am on April 1.
McKinley, from Ikamatua on
the West Coast, worked for Ahaura
Transport and was on his way to
Christchurch.
Pie shop owner Ben Holmes said
McKinley regularly stopped for a
coffee.
Holmes said two of his staff
rushed to help McKinley and called
emergency services.
“One girl was there when Rob
passed so that’s really, really tough.”
Holmes said McKinley’s family
visited the shop after the accident to
thank the staff for their efforts.
“It meant a lot to the family that
he wasn’t alone.”
He said the Sheffield community
had rallied around to support the
staff.
The township’s residents have
long pushed to reduce the speed
limit through Sheffield from
70km/h to 50km/h.
Said Holmes: “Commonsense
has not prevailed in this
situation at all. Unfortunately the
community has been saying this
(fatality) was waiting to happen.”
West Melton, Darfield, Springfield
and Arthur’s Pass, all on
SH73, have 50km/h limits.
Since the fatality, Holmes has
written to NZ Transport Agency
Waka Kotahi and Selwyn MP
Nicola Grigg about lowering
Sheffield’s speed limit.
Grigg has passed on Holmes’
concerns to Transport Minister
Chris Bishop.
Despite the fatality, NZTA says
the earliest a reduced limit could
be considered is June, and even
A NZTA spokesperson said any
changes must align with the new
Transport Setting of Speed Limits
and attract funding under current
safety priorities.
“Government policy prioritises
the spokesperson said.
Holmes said the process should
not be so complex.
“How much admin does there
erected? We know customers and
travellers won’t blink an eye that it
After the surgery medical staff
had told Jack his “beloved” Anne
had died shortly after being transported
to hospital.
“He was saying to us that it was
his fault,” Catherwood said.
“We just told him not to think like
that and that we loved him.”
Jack was driving on Friday, April
crashed into a ditch on the Christchurch-Akaroa
“He put on a brave face. He was
incredibly tough and stoic but you
could tell he was feeling downcast.
He had been advised mum had died
and she was the love of his life.”
Although Jack was fully aware
and conscious, it became clear his
injuries would not be survivable.
As more family members arrived
at the hospital to say goodbye, there
were moments of levity.
Catherwood’s daughter Charlotte
shared jokes with her grandfather.
Owner fined after tainted food sold to patrons
• By Al Williams
A RESTAURANT owner who
sold toxic food to customers
for 18 months told concerned
staff the bacteria wasn’t “killing
bacteria” and Kiwis need to be
“toughened up”.
When unsafe levels of staphylococcus
aureus were detected in
samples of frozen food at Samurai
Bowl on Colombo St posing a risk
of food poisoning, authorities ordered
owner Xinchen Liu to recall
and destroy all ramen meals.
Instead, she directed staff to
repurpose the ingredients – some
of which were served to customers
and others were given to staff as
meals while on duty.
But staff were uncomfortable
with eating or reusing the recalled
food, which they thought looked
and tasted bad.
“If this happened in China, you
eat the product and probably get
diarrhoea for one day but then your
body gets toughened up to the bacteria.
Kiwi people here are friggin’
weak. They need to be toughened
up,” Liu told one employee.
Now Liu, the sole owner and
director, has been sentenced after
failing to ensure food in her restaurant
was safe and suitable to eat.
The courts found she was also
reckless as to whether that failure
created risk to lives when she
directed staff to retain recalled
meals and contravened the
Immigration Act by employing
staff who were either meant to be
working elsewhere or not lawfully
entitled to work in New Zealand.
In June 2019, a recall of all Samurai
Bowl ramen meals began. All
frozen meals manufactured after
Liu took control of the business
three months earlier were included,
as her poor record keeping did not
allow specific batches to be traced.
According to the summary of
facts, Liu conducted a recall as
required and sent food safety officers
pictures of discarded meal
wrappers.
The recall order was closed in
August on the expectation Liu had
done what was required to remove
the risk to the public.
However, she had done the opposite
and directed staff to retain the
meals because they cost money.
“The meals were then stored in
freezers with a quantity of them
defrosted and separated into their
component parts of miso soup,
noodles and meat. These parts were
then put into containers and refrozen
for use in restaurant meals, as
well as staff meals.
Liu hid the recalled food from
food safety officers during inspections
and told staff to tell the officers
that any recalled meals they saw
were for her personal use.
This report was produced by
Open Justice – Te Pātītī, an
NZME initiative funded by
NZ on Air
Miso soup and meat from the
meals was served to customers
while staff were given the soup and
noodles as a meal entitlement.
Staff were uncomfortable with
eating or reusing the recalled food
and sometimes threw it out if they
thought Liu wouldn’t notice.
When customers complained
about the recalled food they would
be served fresh items.
More than 12 months later, in
August 2020, a customer reported
suffering severe food poisoning
after eating a ramen meal at the
restaurant.
Medical evaluation confirmed
the illness as consistent with
Staphylococcus aureus.
Between October 2019 and May
2021, Liu employed three staff, two
of whom held work visas with conditions
only allowing them to work
at unrelated companies.
The third was not lawfully able to
work in New Zealand.
In the district court last week, Liu
was sentenced to six months’ home
detention and fined $30,000.
She was convicted of aiding and
abetting, knowingly supplying false
and misleading information, allowing
persons to unlawfully work and
failing to ensure food was safe and
suitable.
Judge Raoul Neave said Liu had
misled immigration officers and
helped conceal the immigration
status of her workers.
Judge Neave also described
her as “somewhat cavalier with
the health of her staff and the
public”.
Judge Neave fined Liu $20,000
plus $149 court costs for the
Ministry of Primary Industries
related charges and $10,000 plus
$149 court costs for the Ministry
of Business, Innovation and Employment
related charges.
New Zealand Food Safety acting
deputy director general Jenny
Bishop said: “Most people do the
right thing, but Ms Liu didn’t
do as she claimed and stored the
meals in freezers.
“This was deliberate and
reckless behaviour and Ms Liu’s
actions had potential to cause
sickness and health risk for a
number of customers.”
It is not the first time the
restaurant has been embroiled in
controversy.
In 2018, prior to Liu buying
the business, Samurai Bowl,
trading under Japan Power, was
fined $70,000 for employment
breaches. At the time, the Labour
Inspectorate described the
offences as “systemic” breaches of
the Holidays Act.
Home invasion gunman denied parole
A MASKED gunman who shot
two women during a home
invasion and robbed multiple
pubs and bars during a five-week
long crime spree has again been
denied parole.
Douglas Anderson Roake was
jailed in 2017 for 13 years and
eight months with a minimum
non-parole period of six-and-ahalf
years.
He robbed six bars in
Christchurch and across
Canterbury at gun point, and in
another terrifying incident shot
two women at a Rolleston farm
during a home invasion. He stole
$115,000 from his robberies,
which has never been recovered.
He appeared before the Parole
Board last week and was told he
would not be released.
The board is yet to release
its full decision or reasons for
declining parole.
A board spokeswoman told
the New Zealand Herald Roake
would remain in prison until at
least April next year, when his
next hearing will be scheduled.
Roake became eligible for
parole in 2023, but was turned
down as the board did not believe
his treatment in prison was good
enough at the time to warrant a
release.
After robbing five pubs
in Christchurch and across
Canterbury, Roake’s spree came
Roake blasted two shots into
the locked front door of the main
house, where the mother and
daughter had been watching TV.
He told them to get on the floor
and demanded money and keys
to a car.
Michaela, believing she was
going to be killed, refused to lie
down and tried to grab the gun.
Meanwhile, 53-year-old Nicola
ran from the room and phoned
police, as well as her son who
lived nearby.
Roake hit Michaela with the
mallet, aiming at her head, before
shooting her in the leg.
She tried to run away, with
Roake again bashing her with the
mallet when Nicola came back
into the room and attempted to
strike him with a vase.
He swung the firearm to Nicola
and told her: “I’m going to shoot
you”.
He shot her in the stomach,
causing her to fall to the floor.
Her son Creighton then showed
up. Roake aimed the gun at his
head, but was out of ammunition.
After the home invasion, Roake
fled to Ashburton where he held
up the Turf Bar at Ashburton
Hotel.
“This is a robbery, get inside,
and lie on the ground,” he said.
He fired a shot into a wall and
then two more into the cash
register as he tried to open it.
He took $1645 in cash from the
safe before fleeing to an address at
Rakaia Huts.
Police found him the following
morning where he admitted the
Ashburton robbery.
At his sentencing, Roake
claimed he stole the money so
he could purchase illegal bodybuilding
drugs for strongman
competitions.
Call for greater
action to stop
mass eel deaths
• By Keiller MacDuff
THE DEPARTMENT of
Conservation is urging stronger
action to prevent further mass
deaths of migrating eels at Te
Waihora Lake Ellesmere after
an estimated tonne of eels died
during a failed migration to the
sea.
The stranding
happened at
Taumutu, where
the eels attempted
to reach the Pacific
Ocean to breed.
Lake Ellesmere,
one of the
country’s most
polluted lakes, has
Leigh
Griffiths
no natural outlet to the sea, and
relies on mechanical openings to
allow fish passage.
Environment Canterbury
general manager of hazards Leigh
Griffiths said the deaths were “a
natural event” which could occur
during the eels’ annual migration.
ECan uses diggers to create a
channel between the lake and sea
at certain times, governed by a
1990 water conservation order and
resource consents held jointly with
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.
Griffiths said the eels died in the
area where the lake can be opened,
but emphasised that “natural
events” could not be prevented.
Te Taumutu rūnanga
representative David Perenara
O’Connell, who is also on ECan’s
executive leadership team,
mirrored Griffiths’ comments in a
video posted to social media.
He estimated about 20 tonnes
of eels attempted to migrate that
night, with most reaching the
ocean.
“As we know with the tuna heke
(eel migration), it’s not always
successful. That’s mother nature
– that’s what’s happened here for
generations,” he said.
“It’s sad we know, but it’s just
what our taiao (environment)
does, and the way the circle of life
happens.”
Griffiths added while the
council had opened the lake
multiple times for fish migration,
it had no legal obligation to
ensure eel migration, saying
DOC was better positioned to
comment due to its statutory
will discuss this with local
in the lake, including iwi.”
Victoria University freshwater
scientist Dr Mike Joy was angry
with the ECan’s response.
“I’m disgusted. Trying to
blame the eels for a problem
that’s been caused by the failure
of Environment Canterbury to
Mike
Joy
lowered lake levels and irrigation
overuse.
“There’s nothing natural about
that lake now, so referring to
natural events is meaningless,”
he said.
Joy said ECan had a duty
to protect waterways, and its
inaction had created conditions
where mass eel deaths were far
more likely.
Ngāi Tahu and ECan signed
the Te Waihora Co-Governance
shared agreement in 2012, with
the city council, Selwyn District
Council, and DOC joining in
subsequent years.
Decisions to open the lake
are made jointly by ECan and
Ngāi Tahu, with input from a
consultation group including the
Waihora Ellesmere Trust, DOC,
Te Taumutu rūnanga, Fish &
Game, and commercial fishers.
Lake openings are temporary
and can close again within a tide
if the swell is strong. Each opening
costs between $20,000 and
$150,000.
Since the stranding, ECan has
completed earthworks to lower the
beach crest at the request of Ngāi
Tahu so eels would have a shorter,
less arduous journey to the ocean.
A BID to stop an allegedly politicallymotivated
appointment to a community
board has failed.
Luke Chandler, affiliated with
the right-leaning Independent
Citizens ticket, has been appointed
to the Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board.
Chandler replaces Al Noor
Mosque imam Gamal Fouda, who
resigned on March 31 after accepting
a new role in Australia.
Last week, Central Ward city
councillor Jake McLellan, who
is part of the left-leaning The
People’s Choice ticket but not on
the community board, said appointing
Chandler was politically
motivated.
He sees it as part of a plan from
right-leaning board members to
help him win the seat outright in
the October local body elections.
Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood
Community Board chair and The People’s
Choice chair Paul McMahon agreed with
McLellan, last week telling Stuff the
TRADITIONALLY trustworthy community
Facebook pages are becoming another
hunting ground for online scam artists.
Redcliffs resident, Kirsten Iliffe, learned this
the hard way after being cheated out of $200.
While scrolling Facebook one Wednesday
night, she came across the ‘Sumner, New
Zealand’ Facebook community page.
She saw a post advertising outdoor furniture
and contacted the seller, who requested a
$100 deposit.
Iliffe grew suspicious when asked to pay the
full amount upfront, but proceeded anyway.
Iliffe also saw the name on the seller’s bank
account differed from her Facebook alias.
“I thought for $200, it’s not worth the
worry. It looked like good furniture, so I put it
through,” she said.
An hour later, Iliffe saw the original post
had been deleted and then re-posted, this
time with a $300 price.
move was “nakedly partisan.”
The vote passed six-to-one, with all
independents and deputy chair Helen
Broughton, an Independent Citizens
member, voting in favour last
Thursday.
Board chair Marie Pollisco was
the sole vote against, while Riccarton
Ward city councillor Tyla
Harrison-Hunt abstained.
Pollisco and Harrison-Hunt,
the board’s only remaining People’s
Choice representatives after
Fouda’s departure, argued that
with just five meetings before the
election, a new appointment was
unnecessary.
Harrison-Hunt said he
abstained “in principle” against
any appointments ,but did not
vote against as he did not want to
make it a partisan issue.
“It is nothing against Luke
personally. I’ve welcomed him to
the board as it’s important to stay
collaborative.”
Supporters of the appointment noted
Chandler narrowly lost to Fouda in the
2022 election by just two votes.
Community Facebook
page hit by scammer
She did not hear from the seller after that.
“I feel a bit embarrassed about it, but I
think we should get it out there because it’s
so sad this is happening on these pages that
do so much good for the community,” Iliffe
said.
She rang her bank that night to ensure
the scammer could not access her account.
Iliffe was told the scammer had an ASB
account so she called the bank and told
them to look at the account’s transactions.
She also logged the situation with police.
“$200 is not a big deal to me, but it’s
about the principle. That’s a lot of money
for some people,” Iliffe said.
Sumner, New Zealand page administrator,
Dan Vann, said the scammer had
managed to re-upload the fraudulent post
five times before he was able to ban the
account.
While he tries to monitor for scams,
Vann admitted it’s difficult to catch all
fraudulent posts.
US against the
World: When
US Ignited the
Tariff War
He Ying
Consul General
of the People’s
Republic of
China in
Christchurch
On April 8, US government announced
an increase in the “reciprocal tariff”
rate on Chinese goods exported to US,
raising it from 34% to 84%. Following
strong countermeasures from China,
US government further raised this
rate to 125% on April 9, bringing the
cumulative additional tariffs on Chinese
goods to 145%. China has filed a
complaint against US under the WTO
dispute settlement mechanism.
As the world’s largest developing
country, China is also the largest
contributor to annual global economic
growth. As the largest developed
country, the United States boasts
the largest economy in the world.
The China-US economic and trade
relations hold profound significance for
both countries and exert a substantial
influence on global stability and
development.
Over the 46 years since the
establishment of diplomatic relations
between China and US, bilateral trade
and economic ties have developed
steadily. The volume of trade between
the two countries has surged from less
than US$2.5 billion in 1979 to nearly
US$688.3 billion in 2024. The China-
US economic and trade cooperation
has continued to expand and improve,
making significant contribution to the
economic and social development,
and wellbeing of the peoples of both
countries.
However, in recent years, the rise of
unilateralism and protectionism in
the US has significantly impeded the
course of normal economic and trade
cooperation between the two countries.
Since the beginning of trade friction
between China and the US in 2018,
US has imposed tariffs on Chinese
exports worth more than US$500
billion. Furthermore, it has continuously
implemented policies aimed at
containing and suppressing China.
The Chinese side has to take forceful
countermeasures to defend its national
interests. At the same time, committed
to resolving disputes through dialogue
and consultation, the Chinese side has
engaged in multiple rounds of economic
and trade consultations with US to
stabilize bilateral economic and trade
relations.
In January 2020, China and US signed
the Phase One Economic and Trade
Agreement. Following its entry into
force, the Chinese side upheld the
spirit of contract and endeavored to
overcome multiple adverse factors,
including the unexpected impact of the
Covid-19 pandemic, subsequent supply
chain disruptions, and global economic
recession, to ensure implementation
of the Agreement. The US side issued
several statements affirming the
effectiveness of the Chinese side’s
efforts. In contrast, the US side has
continuously tightened export control,
escalated sanctions against Chinese
enterprises, and repeatedly violated its
obligations under the Agreement.
Since the beginning of this year, US
has further imposed comprehensive
additional tariffs on Chinese products,
including tariffs citing the fentanyl issue
as the pretext, announced “reciprocal
tariffs”, and proposed various restrictive
measures targeting China’s maritime,
logistics, and shipbuilding industries.
These restrictive measures have
escalated the problem, and again reveal
the unilateralism and coercive nature
of US conduct. They are in conflict with
the principles of the market economy,
run counter to multilateralism, and will
have serious repercussions for China-
US economic and trade relations. In
accordance with the fundamental
principles of international law and
relevant laws and regulations, the
Chinese side has taken necessary
countermeasures.
More broadly, US tariffs and other
restrictive trade measures on its trading
partners has artificially disrupted
established global supply and industrial
chains, undermined market-oriented
free trade rules, severely hindered the
economic development of various
countries, harmed the wellbeing of both
the American people and those of other
countries, and negatively impacted
economic globalization.
As New Zealand Prime Minister
Christopher Luxon said: “trade is the
lifeblood of the New Zealand economy”.
In the face of the global tariff and
trade wars sparked by the United
States, New Zealand is unlikely to
remain unaffected. Some New Zealand
economic experts noted that U.S.
tariff policies might result in zero or
materially negative global economic
growth this year. With China and US
being New Zealand’s first and second
largest export markets, any slowdown
in their economies, coupled with rising
inflation and weakening consumer
demand, will inevitably impact New
Zealand’s export and drag down its
economic growth.
History repeatedly proved that trade
war or tariff war had no winners.
China always maintains that China-
US economic and trade relations
are mutually beneficial and win-win
in nature. As two major countries at
different stages of development with
distinct economic systems, it is normal
for China and US to have differences
and frictions in their economic and
trade cooperation. However, the
key is to respect each other’s core
interests and major concerns, and
find proper solutions to resolve issues
through dialogue and consultation.
For China, the door is always open for
negotiations, but those negotiations
will have to take place on the basis of
equality, mutual respect and mutual
benefit. China will continue to firmly
safeguard our lawful rights and
interests in accordance with WTO rules,
while upholding the multilateral trading
system and the international trade
order.
China is a responsible country. Our
countermeasures against the bullying
behavior of US, aim not only to
safeguard our own legitimate rights
and interests, but also to uphold
international rules and order, the
common interests of countries in the
world, and international fairness and
justice. In the face of US hegemony and
bullying, remember this: give the bully
an inch, he will take a mile.
How many Easter eggs do you
like to eat?
More than 2.25 million Easter
eggs were sold in Canterbury
in 1984, The Press reported.
With the region’s population
at 340,000, it was calculated
this equated to about six eggs a
person – “an impressive figure”.
Contributing to Cadbury’s
good sales was “a new line called
the creme egg”, sales director
Mr. A. R Campbell said.
It was the third year creme
eggs had been on the market,
and they had been enormously
popular. The retail price was 50c
and they were the most popular
egg in the world, he said.
Today, a creme egg costs $2.30,
up from $1.70 in 2023 – a 35%
increase in two years.
Easter eggs symbolise new life
1970-80s – EASTER
and are traditionally eaten on
Easter Sunday to commemorate
the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
while hot-cross buns are eaten
on Good Friday, with the cross
symbolising his crucifixion.
Easter is also a time for Hui
Aranga, an annual gathering of
Māori Roman Catholics. The hui
includes cultural, sporting and
religious activities and has been
held since 1946.
In Christchurch from the
mid-1950s until his death in
1975, former city councillor
Reg Stillwell was well known
for turning his backyard into a
“Garden of Goodwill” at Easter
and Christmas. So devoted was
the community advocate, he
even got out of his sick bed in
1973 to create the fantasy land,
EVERYTHING EYES
Dr Steve Heap has racked up heaps of “eye surgery
miles”over the past 26 years at McMaster & Heap
Vet Practice. Originally a 1992 Massey Vet School
graduate, Steve had no idea his future path would
be restoring sight in pets and operating through a
microscope. During his time at Massey, Steve enjoyed
dairy cows, farm management and pig husbandry.
A two year working holiday to the UK locked in “all
things eyes” as Steve’s special interest and he became
certified as a Veterinary Ophthalmologist in 1997.
When we purchased our practice on April Fools Day
1999 (formerly known as Rozens Vet Clinic), little did
we both know how important ophthalmology would
be. There was no vet in the South Island offering an
Ophthalmology service, so Steve was busy from the
get go. The majority of Steve’s patients are cats and
dogs but he’s seen a variety of animals including
hawks, yellow eyed penguins, reptiles, endangered
frogs, lions, horses, sheep, llamas and many more.
Steve
performing
cataract surgery
on a Hoiho
As well as seeing medical and surgical referrals,
Steve is also a big believer of eye testing specific
breeds of dogs to detect inherited lesions. By
detecting these conditions early on in the disease
process, decisions can be made on how to manage
these patients long term and whether breeding
from the patients is a viable, safe, ethical option.
Different hereditary conditions Steve checks for
include Cataracts, Progressive Retinal Atrophy,
Retinal Dysplasia, Distichiasis, Persistent Pupillary
membranes and Goniodysgenesis. Steve travels from
Auckland to Invercargill eye testing.
Steve is going to talk about some interesting
surgical eyes he sees on a regular basis.
“NON HEALING” ULCERS IN DOGS
Some dogs cornea’s (clear window of the eye) are not
made very well. If this is the case they can develop a
painful surface ulcer that doesn’t heal. Boxer dogs are
the most famous for this.
Sometimes these ulcers
can take months to heal
or not at all!
If a dog has one of
these ulcers, known on
SCCEDs, Boxer ulcer
or recurrent epithelial
erosion, then a procedure
to scratch the eye with a
needle (grid keratotomy)
or an abrasion with a
diamond burr (Alger
brush) is required to heal
them. These procedures
heal 80-90% of these
troublesome ulcers.
Non healing
superficial ulcer
If this doesn’t work then a general anaesthetic and
a full surgical procedure called a lamellar keratectomy
can sometimes be required.
DIABETIC CATARACTS IN DOGS
Nothing feels better than restoring sight to a blind
dog and essentially this is what cataract surgery does.
Steve’s most common cataract surgery is in diabetic
dogs. Nearly all diabetic dogs develop cataracts - they
often come on very quickly and dogs can go blind within
a week.
Bear,
3 days post
Cataract
surgery
doing
extremely
well
Bear, a 9 year old terrier has diabetes and lives in
central Otago and came up for bilateral cataract surgery
in early April. This is him 3 days after surgery - he is
doing very well. Although he still has his Elizabethan
collar on he can see and is ALOT happier in himself. He is
keen to go for walks and pulling his mum around. Before
surgery he was very quiet and had lost his confidence
- he was scared of bumping into things and making
mistakes.
His mum is in for a big job for the next few months,
putting numerous drops in his eyes. There is a very good
chance he will have functional vision for the rest of his
life after the surgery.
ENTROPION
Entropion is a condition where the eyelids roll in causing
hair to rub on the eye. Shar Pei dogs are the classic
example of the - with all their “rolls”.
Matilda post entropion
surgery coping well with the
pink bucket on her head
“Matilda” a 70kg 4 year old St Bernard presented
to Steve with a watery, red, sore eye. She had a nasty
conjunctivitis in the right eye and had been rubbing
this eye. She had 20/20 vision and was in great health
otherwise (who wouldn’t be consuming 3 roast chickens
a day, minus the bones, and the best steak).
Her lower eyelid were rolling in towards the cornea
her eye was painful and inflamed. Her tear production
was normal.
Steve performed bilateral entropion surgery to
correct the lid issues. All was going exceedingly well
until Matilda’s 70 kg brother Casper, decided to muck
around and leap on her head, causing some sutures to
pull out. Steve was able to replace these sutures under
sedative. So far all is looking good with her eyes.
BRACHYCEPHALICS AND THEIR EYES
Common brachycephalic breeds of dogs include pugs,
French bulldogs, English bulldogs etc. Because of their
face conformation, they often have a number of health
problems including eye issues.
This photo shows a
pug with very large eye
openings which can
cause exposure, a large
nasal fold that will be
pushing up and rolling
his inner eyelids so hair
is rubbing on his cornea.
He will also have a poor
blink (so his lids don’t
cover his corneas), which
can result in corneal
ulcers. This dog also has Brachycephalic Pug with
strabismus (crosseyed)— large eyelid openings
his eyes are not aligned
and strabismus
very well and they are
pointing to the side. Despite all of this his eyes are
looking comfortable and “healthy” in this photo.
CATARACT IN A YELLOW EYED PENGUIN
(HOIHOI) FOR DUNEDIN WILDLIFE HOSPITAL
“Sandy” as he’s affectionately known, is a total
success story from start to finish. Steve removed a
cataract back in 2023 as he had suffered a nasty injury
resulting in the cataract. This is a very serious injury in
a penguin as they need perfect vision to hunt for food
and avoid predators.
Dunedin Wildlife Hospital had their own vet perform
the anaesthetic (a little outside our comfort zone) and
Steve successfully removed the cataract at McMaster
& Heap. After a period of rehabilitation, Sandy was
released back to the wild. He is still alive and doing
well as he’s been spotted several times when he
comes back to moult.
This is possibly the first wild living penguin to
be successfully released post cataract surgery - an
amazing outcome for this endangered species, where
every single individual bird is critical in the battle to
prevent extinction.
CORNEAL SEQUESTRUM IN PERSIAN CATS
These black “scabs” on the surface of the eyes only
occur in cats. Classically Persian cats have been the
most likely to get these but recently Burmese cats
have become the most frequent victim. The corneal
sequestrum occur because of chronic irritation
-usually non healing or infected corneal ulcers.
flap in a cat
2 years after
cataract surgery
Bilateral corneal
sequestrum in a
Persian cat
These eyes usually require surgery to fix them and
prevent recurrence. Often a conjunctival pedicle
flap is placed, a tricky procedure using an operating
microscope and very small suture. Steve has
performed many of these and return to full vision is
excellent.
If anyone has a difficult eye problem in their pet,
Steve would love to help. He loves a challenging case
and enjoys solving problems.
Tech vow to bounce back after
shock loss ends unbeaten run
• By Sam Coughlan
CASHMERE Technical captain
Tom Schwarz says his side must
avoid getting carried away after
their surprise 3-2 loss to Wānaka
AFC on Saturday.
Tech came from 2-0 down at
halftime to level the scores at 2-2,
but a late goal saw them crash to
their first defeat of the season.
They play Nomads on Friday
and Schwarz said the team was
looking to right the wrongs from
that match.
“ It’s about going back to what
we’re good at, having a chat
about it, getting things out in the
open, and responding well from
that,” he said.
“Setbacks like a loss, although
it’s disappointing, it can work in
your advantage if you respond
well.”
Schwarz expects a tough test
on Friday, despite Nomads
having just one win from their
opening three games after a 2-0
loss to Dunedin City Royals on
Saturday.
“ They’re usually high energy,
three rounds of the Canterbury
Rugby League premiership. The
Hornby Panthers surrendered
their first win of the season with a
32-28 victory over the Greymouth
Greyhounds. Meanwhile, the
Linwood Keas dominated the
Eastern Eagles with a 60-0
thrashing, leaving the Eagles as the
only winless side. Linwood, Hornby,
Greymouth, and Riccarton now
Clearwater’s Moore finished
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Pummelled by Panthers
A lesson in league from the reigning champions
Sports reporter Sam
Coughlan is a footballer
who plays in goal, so we
decided to take him out
of his comfort zone. In
the second of a series,
he trained with Hornby
Panthers, the defending
Canterbury Rugby
League champions
IT’S A DREADFUL evening
for training at Hornby’s Leslie
Park home ground – the rain is
bucketing down, making both ball
and field slick and slippery.
My first act is to try and kick
a goal from the sideline. As a
footballer, it’s the one thing I
thought I could do well, but my
shot falls miserably short although
the direction was good.
After a short warm-up we get
into some passing drills, running
up and down the field.
Sounds easy? I thought so.
That was until a full-contact
drill had me charging at speed into
four defenders, prompting head
coach Corey Lawrie to remind the
team I haven’t played rugby league
before.
Copping a shoulder in the cheek
on my first run makes me regret
my decision not to bother with a
mouthguard. I fear for my teeth if
I take another heavy hit and I’m
thankful to have the soft, muddy
ground to cushion my fall.
Welcome to the Panthers!
Even in the pouring rain, the
standard was clear – sharp runs,
crisp passes and total focus for
the duration of the drills.
Except, of course, for the one
guy who didn’t know where to
stand or run or what position he
was playing. That’s me, in case it
wasn’t clear.
It’s an unusual feeling – I’m
used to running around on a
muddy field, but this is with ball
in hand rather than at feet.
The team is welcoming and
happy to instruct me, where
they can, on what I need to do
to get more involved.
The Panthers are going
through attacking formations
and moves in preparation for
the weekend’s match, a repeat
of last season’s grand final with
the Halswell Hornets, but with
calls of “wedge”, “China”, and
“diamond” around me, I am
dumbfounded.
Hooker Kyan Rosie throws me
a lifeline: “Just run it up,” he says,
tossing me the ball.
EYES ON THE PRIZE: After a poor attempt at kicking a goal
from the sideline, sports reporter Sam Coughlan tries some
passing drills in dreadful conditions at Leslie Park, the Hornby
Panthers’ home ground.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
I obey, only to sprint straight into
a brick wall.
It hurts, but not much. I can tell
they aren’t tackling the newbie at
100%, because I’m sure I’d be in a
lot more pain.
In the end, the only bruise is to
my ego after feeling mostly useless
for the best part of 90-minutes.
I make it out alive with no broken
bones, all my teeth intact, and a
whole new respect for those who
spend their Saturdays smashing
into each other and rolling in mud.
I’ll take that as a win – my
influence clearly inspired the
Panthers, who won their next game
22-12.
• Next week Coughlan
finds out what it’s like to
train with top football club
Christchurch United.
HIT HARD: Coughlan runs the ball into contact and cops a Panther’s shoulder straight to the cheek. He really should have brought a mouthguard.
SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
Standing and
Working Together:
The Christian Education
Network of Schools
The Christian Education
Network (CEN) of schools
in Greater Christchurch
offers high-quality education
founded on Biblical truth,
within a Christ-centred
supportive community
that emphasises character,
creativity, and responsibility.
At its heart, the CEN
is a collaboration of State
Integrated Christian
schools working together
to strengthen Christian education.
Established in the early 2000s, the
network builds on a 60-year history of
Christian education in Christchurch.
Initially comprising four city schools—
Middleton Grange, Hillview, Emmanuel,
and Aidanfield Christian Schools—the
network has since expanded to the wider
region and includes Rangiora New Life
and Rolleston Christian Schools.
Our network offers community-based
primary education with pathways to
secondary schools on both sides of
the Waimakariri River. This provides
opportunity for children to continue
their Christian education through to
graduation, no matter where they live in
Greater Christchurch.
The CEN’s successful development
has been supported by a collaborative
relationship with the Ministry of
Education, who have worked with us to
provide coordinated enrolment schemes
and the best possible education while
staying true to our Christian values.
As enrolment season approaches, we
invite you to explore the opportunities
within the CEN network. Together, we
can provide your child with an education
that equips them for using their Godgiven
gifts and skills in serving others,
making a positive impact, and fulfilling
their purpose in life.
Papanui
High School
OPEN NIGHT
Thursday 29th May 6.30pm
The evening will consist of an address from the principal and student
representatives, followed by guided tours of the school’s facilities.
Papanui High School
Our School, Our Success, Our Responsibility
At Papanui High School positive
relationships are at the forefront of what we
do. Connecting through a responsive local
curriculum we provide an opportunity for
all students to learn in a productive and
future-focused environment.
The opportunity to learn from an
innovative and broad curriculum is critical
to providing a pathway that meets each
student’s individual needs. This reinforces
the philosophy underpinning personalised
learning and is strongly supported by
understanding our students’ interests,
passions, talents, and ultimately their
career aspirations.
Papanui “PRIDE” is what we represent,
and we demonstrate this by having young
adults leave our school as confident
Reflections of a Year 9
Marian College student
Starting high school felt like it was
going to be a big jump for me. I came
from a small school so I was nervous
about what was ahead. I chose Marian
College for its outstanding academics and
endless opportunities but when I got here
I realised it was so much more than that
- it’s not just a community, but a family
that welcomes everyone no matter who
you are.
My first term has been amazing. I love
all my classes and I have learnt so much.
The teachers have been so kind and
welcoming as have all the other students
who have helped us Year 9s find our feet
in this new environment. I really enjoyed
Robert Gilbert, Principal
the school Athletic and Swimming sports.
The enthusiasm and excitement all the
students feel, the chanting and supporting
their fellow Whānau members as they
compete for House points is such a
magical experience.
I also really enjoy
the Friday lunchtime
concerts. I am so
grateful and happy
to be at Marian and
I wouldn’t change a
thing about my first
provides personal support and guidance
to its students. It enables a strong pastoral
A new brand
Tēnā koutou katoa
I am proud to serve as Acting Tumuaki
| Principal at Te Kura Tuarua o Horomaka
| Hillmorton High School. We are a
fast-growing, diverse school of over
1,400 ākonga (students) from Years 7 to
13. Our vision is to work in partnership
with our community to nurture wellrounded,
accomplished young people
who are prepared and ready for life. We
are committed to creating inclusive,
supportive classrooms that enable all
students to thrive.
Our curriculum allows ākonga to follow
their passions, while our co-curricular
programme encourages participation,
leadership, and success across academic,
arts, sports, and cultural areas. Our
dedicated teachers believe in our students,
build strong relationships with them and
their whānau, and care deeply about their
wellbeing.
This year, we introduced a new logo,
uniform and colours that reflect who
we are and where we come from. They
represent the weaving together of our
community, house culture, values and our
connection to the Port Hills through our
whakataukī: Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te
tuohu koe, me he maunga teitei, which we
translate as personal best, nothing less.
We’re also continuing to develop
our school site. In 2021, we opened a
22-classroom middle school block. This
year, we unveiled our new gymnasium,
complete with two full-sized basketball
courts, two classrooms, and a state of the
art strength and conditioning suite. Next
year, we’ll open a 12-classroom Science
We are incredibly proud of who we are
at Te Kura Tuarua o Horomaka—and are
excited for what is to come.
New Santa Fe a bigger,
bolder and better SUV
The Star Classifieds
Thursday April 17 2025 The Star 25
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
HYUNDAI’S latest fifth generation Santa
Fe represents a seismic shift on almost every
front for one of the company’s largest and
biggest selling SUVs.
The Santa Fe has racked up 24 years on our
market where it has built a strong and loyal
band of owners.
How they react to this newcomer’s ‘out
the gate’ appearance, compared to the staid
styling of the vehicle it replaces, will be
fascinating, because its looks aren’t for the
faint hearted.
This new version makes a statement with
spacious second- and third-row seating, plus
exceptional room for people and luggage.
Sporting a new squared off upright design,
with more than a fleeting resemblance to its
cousin the Kia EV9 all electric wagon, are the
keys to unlocking more cabin and load space
inside this latest Santa Fe.
Small increases in the exterior dimensions
were required on this revolutionary model to
create greatly improved interior space.
The power operated tailgate, standard
across the range, is the gateway to a load
carrying area 15% bigger than before, while
rear seat occupants enjoy more head and
legroom room than the previous model.
A regular seven-seat format is standard, but
is also available in a more luxurious six-seat
configuration with middle-row captain’s
chairs.
Prices for the three-model range starts
at $84,990 for the Active, then it’s a bit of a
step up to $96,990 Limited supplied for this
road test. From there you head through the
six-figure barrier en-route to the flagship
$104,990 Calligraphy model.
A three-year or 100,000km warranty looks
like something out of a vehicle brochure
from five years ago. It is far from the best in
the market, and may not sit well with some
paying for models sitting in the Santa Fe’s
fairly lofty price bracket.
A major update of the previous models
petrol/electric hybrid system uses a 1.6-litre
turbo engine teamed with a 44.2kW electric
motor, drawing power from a 1.49 kWh
lithium-ion battery.
It produces 172kW of power and 367Nm
of torque that makes its way to the road via a
six-speed automatic, to provide smooth, quiet
and eco-friendly driving.
The electric motor and petrol engine
worked seamlessly together in the test vehicle
to deliver ample torque where it is most
needed.
There isn’t a wealth of power and torque
to convincingly propel a much larger and
heavier vehicle than the one it replaces.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Some owners of the previous model
will lament the passing of the feisty 2.2L
turbo diesel, but this fuel is cast as an
environmental villain in today’s low
emission motoring world, and more vehicle
manufacturers are steering away from these
engines.
The extra size and weight of this new
model exact a toll on performance. I felt it
was off the pace of the previous model, and
lacking its liveliness under load and over
hilly undulating roads.
Apart from these blips, it does the job
with the sort of commendable effort and
application to satisfy most owners.
This SUV is a passenger and load space
star, giving its rivals a lesson in intelligent
interior packaging and space maximisation.
Smart and practical comfort and
convenience features abound, such as
Hyundai’s bilateral multi-console storage
space, which is easily accessible for both
front and rear occupants. An intuitive 6.6-
inch climate control display work wells, and
owners will appreciate the high-speed, dual
wireless smartphone charging.
Hyundai’s next-generation cockpit
provides the user interface for an all-new
12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, that’s
standard across the range.
The system benefits from four times more
computing power and fifteen times the
graphical processing power of the previous
system.
A high-definition full digital instrument
cluster provides information such as turnby-turn
satellite navigation directions and
visual alerts from SmartSense safety systems
including a blind-spot view monitor live
video feed, in addition to the speedometer,
tachometer, fuel and temperature displays
A more advanced version of Hyundai’s
forward collision-avoidance assist system
makes the cut for this model.
The suspension has been reworked to
better manage body lean when this larger
Santa Fe is pushed harder over twisty roads,
or when called on to make unexpected
changes in direction. Through the bends, it
is more composed and relaxing to drive, and
despite its size and weight gains, sits flatter
and the suspension less provoked by uneven
road surfaces.
The test vehicle was assured and
competent traversing reasonably wellformed
tracks that weren’t too badly
weathered or rutted.
Knowing the vehicle’s limitations over
rougher ground is your ticket to steering
clear of off-road trouble.
wearing a beekeeping suit.
Ryan, 17, from Bishopdale,
eclipsed his own world record
by more than 20 minutes
on Sunday, finishing the
Christchurch half marathon in
“I’m feeling a little sore,” he
said on Tuesday. He had suffered
cramp in his hamstring a the
under their brand.
“Going to the gym and running
Hive Energy sponsored his
races in China, where he ran few looks from people. I started
four half marathons in 35 days, with controlled conditions first,
so he decided to create a buzz by working up to running outside,”
all of them.
The goal was to break one hour
“The interest was the natural and 30 minutes. The suit did
“When you sweat it accumulates
in the suit and started to get
a bit claustrophobic, the more
you run the heavier it gets, and I
could I barely see anything.”
What got Ryan home was the
support from the home crowd,
he said.
“Definitely the cheers of the
crowd kept me going, had to
figh through – it was physically
demanding and I needed that
mental componen to keep going.”
Outside of his record exploits,
Ryan manages social media for
