Whether you’ve just moved into 

a new home and want to put 

your stamp on it, or you just want 

a refresh for your living spaces, 

renovating your home can be an 

exciting – and daunting – task. 

However, you can relieve a lot 

of stress before you even start 

by setting yourself a budget so 

you don’t end up with any nasty 

surprises along the way. 

Be realistic from the start 

Before you even start your plans, 

take some time to assess how much 

you can really afford to spend. 

When working out your budget be 

sure to include everything, such as 

the cost of materials, labour, and 

permits. 

To help design your budget, reach 

out to contractors and suppliers for 

quotes to help build an idea in your 

head of what each aspect is likely to 

cost. It’s also a good idea to factor in 

a contingency fund for unexpected 

expenses – aim for this to be around 

10-20% of your total budget. 

If you’re thinking renovating more 

than one room, or your entire home, 

set an overall budget and then 

break it down for each room. 

Get planning 

With a budget in mind, you can 

now start to actually plan what 

renovations you’d like. Making lists is 

the easiest way to do this – in fact, 

lists will be your friends throughout 

the whole renovation process. 

Break down your renovation tasks 

by priority – you can do this by 

distinguishing between essential 

repairs (e.g. fixing a leaky roof) and 

aesthetic upgrades (e.g. new marble 

countertops). This will help you stay 

focused and allocate your budget 

more efficiently. 

Track your spending 

This one may sound obvious, but 

you’d be surprised how easy it is 

to get swept up in the excitement 

of planning and overseeing your 

renovations and completely losing 

track of your budget. 

You can use a spreadsheet to 

keep an eye on mounting costs 

or stick to an old-school pen and 

paper list – whatever your preferred 

method, just make sure you’re 

updating it regularly and accurately. 

Do it yourself? 

You can help keep your costs lower 

by doing some basic renovations 

yourself – tasks such as painting 

walls, landscaping your outdoors 

spaces and even tiling are things 

you may be able to do by yourself. 

However, for things like plumbing, 

electrics, structural changes, and 

fitting new windows should be firmly 

left to the experts – or you might 

end up with a costly mistake on your

How to paint 

a feature wall 

Choosing to paint a wall in 

a feature colour is one of the 

most low-cost, high-impact 

ways you can make a change 

to your home. It’s also a great 

project for the cooler months as 

you can stay dry and warm indoors 

while you get the painting done. 

As always, proper preparation 

is key to getting the best, most 

professional looking results. 

In terms of colour, remember 

that it is your home so you can be 

as bold and daring as you like. 

The beauty of a feature wall is that 

an impactful colour won’t completely 

overwhelm the space. Specific 

colours can create a different vibe 

and ambiance to a room. We’ve 

painted this bedroom in Resene 

Dream Big, a restful sky blue.

Step-by-step 

1 Protect Move your furniture 

as far away from the wall as you 

can to ensure you have enough 

room to work, as well as keeping 

it away from paint splatters. Place 

a drop cloth down and secure it 

with painter’s tape for extra peace 

of mind. Use painter’s tape to mask 

off the areas you don't want to get 

paint on. 

2 Clean, fill, sand Spray the 

wall with Resene Interior Paintwork 

Cleaner and wipe it down with a 

microfibre cloth. Use Resene EzyFill 

Quick to fill any holes in the wall 

and wait for it to dry, then sand 

with 100 grit sandpaper. Wipe 

or brush away sanding dust with 

a dusting brush 

or microfibre cloth. 

3 Prime For the areas that 

were filled, spot prime with 

Resene Quick Dry. Then on the 

entirety of the wall, apply Resene 

Acrylic Undercoat – we’ve used 

this because the colour is going 

from dark to light. 

4 Paint Give your Resene 

SpaceCote Low Sheen a good 

stir then decant into your paint 

tray and apply the first coat using 

a roller and extension pole. Wait 

the recommended drying time 

before applying your second coat. 

Remove the painter’s tape and 

you’re done! 

Top tip: For the best finish, 

make sure you load your 

paint roller with enough 

paint – it should resemble 

a hot dog dipped in batter.

1 Protect Place your Resene 

drop cloth down and secure 

with painter’s tape. To protect 

the fireplace from any sanding 

debris and paint, cover it with 

plastic masking film secured 

with painter’s tape. 

2 Clean and sand Spray the 

tiles and hearth with Resene 

Interior Paintwork Cleaner and 

wipe down with a microfibre cloth. 

Lightly sand the surfaces with 

180 grit sandpaper – don’t forget 

your safety gear! Brush away all 

sanding dust. 

3 Seal Apply one coat of Resene 

Waterborne Sureseal pigmented 

sealer to the tiles on the surround 

and hearth. Cut in with a brush first, 

then use a brush or roller to cover 

the rest of the surface. Allow to dry. 

4 Add texture Apply a coat of 

Resene Sandtex Mediterranean 

effect – we only applied it to the 

vertical tiles, not on the hearth 

– and allow it to dry before 

applying a second coat. Bring 

out the texture by using a brush 

and applying it in a criss-cross 

motion or stipple. This process 

can be repeated multiple times 

to achieve your desired texture 

result – the more coats you apply, 

the more rustic and textured the 

finish will be. 

5 Colour the texture Once 

you’re happy with the texture 

and the Resene Sandtex has 

fully dried, it’s time to add some 

colour. Apply two coats of Resene 

SpaceCote Low Sheen using a 

brush, allowing dry time between 

coats. We used the gorgeous green 

colour Resene Cabbage Pont. 

To create a limewash effect, use 

Resene FX Paint Effects Medium. 

6 Paint the hearth Apply a coat 

of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen 

to the hearth area. Allow the first 

coat to fully dry before applying 

the second coat. 

7 Finishing touches When all the 

paint is dry, remove the masking 

film from around the fireplace and 

you’re done!

Additive in your 

waterborne

and how you can avoid them. 

Not setting a realistic budget 

When it comes to home improvements, a budget 

is your friend, but it can be easy to underestimate 

how much it’s going to cost. 

Thankfully, it can be avoided with a bit of forward 

planning. When you’re creating your budget, 

ensure that you’re aware of, and include, permits 

and potential unexpected repairs. You can check

Not having a plan 

Home renovations are exciting, but rushing in will 

end in disaster and could end up being a very 

costly mistake. Without a clear plan and end goal 

in place, you risk making the wrong decisions 

along the way. 

You can avoid this, by – you’ve guessed it 

– making a plan. Create a detailed plan that 

includes your objectives and goals, design vision, 

and timelines. If your renovations are on the more 

extensive side, then you may want to consult an 

architect or a designer to make sure what you 

hope is achievable. 

Skipping the professionals 

There are plenty of smaller DIY jobs that most folks 

can turn their hand to without too much effort, 

such as painting or even tiling. 

However, for things such as structural changes, 

re-wiring, and plumbing it’s always best to call in 

the experts. Unless you’re a professional carrying 

out these sorts of tasks can be dangerous, not to 

mention expensive. 

Of course, avoiding this one is easy – know your 

limitations and call out the professionals for expert 

jobs. Make sure you hire properly licensed tradies 

who will ensure the job is done, and done well. 

Neglecting permits 

Rushing in and starting major structural work can 

leave you seriously out of pocket, and may result 

in all of your hard work being pulled down. Not 

ideal. 

It’s easy enough to avoid this one – if you’re 

planning any major works, that includes building 

or structural changes make sure you check if 

you need to apply for any permits before you get 

going.
