Want a luxury bathroom? Opt for modular

designs

Bathrooms are more than

just a necessity of modern

living. It’s true that they’re

practical spaces — but practicality

doesn’t mean you have

to sacrifice luxury.

Creating a bathroom that

combines functionality and

luxury isn’t difficult if you use

the right design principles.

George Wahlgren, director

of product development for

Robern — a manufacturer

of bespoke bathroom furnishings

and fixtures — has

answered a few questions to

shed some light on how incorporating

modular designs

and products into your bathroom

can enhance the space.

What are the benefits

of modular design for

bathrooms?

Modular design can enhance

the look and feel of any

bathroom, especially when

creating personalized spaces.

Robern was the first in developing

and commercializing

modular storage and styling

systems, so our designers

and engineers know a thing

or two about the benefits of

modular design for customers.

There are many advantages

to using modular designs

when building or renovating

a bathroom. For example,

modular bathroom features

can help seamlessly integrate

various design components

— different textures, finishes,

materials and colors — while

maintaining a cohesive and

polished look.

Modular designs also help

maximize space in a bathroom,

creating a sense of

openness and elegance and

giving people a chance to enjoy

the benefits of functionality

and personal expression.

That includes customizable

lighting and integrated technology.

How would you describe

Robern’s modular

design ethos?

Robern’s modular design

ethos is rooted in a long

history of delivering a sophisticated

blend of luxury,

functionality and personalization.

We design, engineer

and manufacture all modular

products in-house, ensuring

a meticulous level of quality

and seamless integration

across our lines.

What luxury bathroom

trends or features do you

expect to see in 2025?

This year, we’re going to

see bathrooms go beyond

the basics and become more

dynamic, multifunctional

retreats. Whether they incorporate

saunas, dressing

rooms, beauty stations or

home fitness areas, these

versatile spaces will focus

on offering a holistic experience.

Along the same lines, wellness

and relaxation will take

center stage in bathroom design

in 2025. The idea of the

bathroom as a sanctuary is

stronger than ever, with spalike

atmospheres creating an

escape from the stresses of

daily life.

A major part of the “spa-ification”

of bathrooms relies

‘Self-direction’ helps people with disabilities or who are

aging in place live at home

More people who live with disabilities

or want to age in place are turning

to self-direction for the long-term services

and supports (LTSS) they need.

With self-direction, the person who

needs care is in charge of who provides

it, when and where. They may also

control how to spend a budget authorized

by their state Medicaid program,

using approved dollars not only to pay

people who support them but to access

goods and services identified as appropriate

for making day-to-day life manageable.

According to AARP, more than 1.5

million people self-directed the LTSS

they receive, including veterans and

Medicaid participants, in 2022 and

2023.

The number has grown 18% since

2019, and there is good reason for the

uptick.

Self-direction gives people autonomy

in how they live their lives. It helps people

avoid institutional care and remain

in familiar home and community settings

while receiving the support they

need to thrive.

“With self-direction, people who

need services are heard. It’s about their

goals and expectations, and the focus is

on that person’s strengths,” said Pearl

Barnett, COO of GT Independence, a

financial management services company

that helps people manage the payroll

and paperwork associated with self-directed

programs.

“Every person should feel they are

involved in their life decisions, such as

who they let into their home and who

provides intimate personal care, like

bathing and dressing,” she said.

Expansion of federal waiver programs

and state plan services has increased

access to self-directed services.

As the uptake grows, more evidence is

coming to light about the many ways

self-direction is improving lives.

Empowering individuals to

make choices

People who self-direct can tailor

their support and services to their

needs. They are involved in planning

— starting with who to hire, including

family or friends who may already be

sacrificing time and financial security

to provide unpaid care. They can also

weigh in on which tools and equipment

to purchase to assist them in everyday

activities.

Self-direction empowers individuals

by giving them control over their

care and promotes independence. As

one participant diagnosed with severe

autism said, traditional care options

“became a one-size-fits-all deal, and

that wasn’t good enough. [Self-direction]

allows me to choose my path in

life.”

Studies suggest that self-direction

contributes to enhanced quality of life,

as self-direction participants report

higher levels of satisfaction with services

and fewer unmet needs.

Overall, their health outcomes are as

good or better than those who receive

traditional care, and some studies have

shown that their families experience

less stress and improved dynamics.

As one daughter supporting her aging

mother says, “It’s helped me to be able

to go ride my bike...or take an overnight.

I hadn’t been anywhere for two

years until we got self-direction.”

Because the person getting self-directed

support knows their needs best, they

have flexibility to make adjustments as

needs and circumstances change, as long

as they remain within their program’s

guidelines and budget parameters. As

cost controls are in place, self-direction

programs are generally able to support

people at a lower cost than traditional

care facilities, while providing more personalized

care.

Finding a self-direction program

For individuals and families seeking

greater control over long-term care

support, a self-direction program may

be the answer. Unfortunately, such

programs often have limited availability.

“Self-direction is life changing, and

we’re advocating for it to be an option

everywhere for everyone,” Barnett

said. “Check with your state’s department

that serves older adults and

people living with disabilities to see if

it’s available or get in touch with GT

Independence to be pointed to area

resources.”

More information about self-direction

can be found at Medicaid.gov

and gtindependence.com.

Protecting Children in a Digital Age

Keeping a watchful eye on your kids

requires an increasing level of tech savvy

many parents find intimidating. Not only

are your kids vulnerable to bad actors online,

but your family’s personal information

could be at risk, as well.

Learn how to protect your children and

family in this digital age with these tips:

Elementary-Age Children

• Encourage open communication.

Have conversations about what

your kids see and do online and talk

with them about potential dangers.

Avoid lecturing in favor of an open exchange

of information.

• Make their inherent interest in

privacy work in your favor. Kids

in this age group, particularly toward

the middle school years, understand

the concept of privacy and value it

immensely. Use that context to help

them understand what goes online is

there to stay. Talk about what kinds

of information should always be kept

private, including identifying details

like addresses and social security

numbers.

• Stay on alert. Not all apps are completely

safe (even the ones you can

access from trusted stores) and not all

filters are foolproof. Keep close tabs

on what your kids are downloading

by reading comments and reviews,

and regularly monitoring what kind of

content they see.

Middle School and High School Kids

• Continue talking about privacy.

You can never have too many conversations

about privacy. What seems

like harmless sharing on social media

can be quite revealing. For example,

frequent posts about visits to a favorite

store or restaurant can allow a

predator to begin tracking behavior

patterns that make your child a target.

It’s also important for kids to understand

how their privacy settings work.

For example, settings that allow exposure

to friends of friends make their

visibility to strangers much broader

than they may realize.

• Help manage their online reputation.

Behaviors that once resulted

in a day or two of hallway chatter can

now live forever. Documenting mischief

online is only fun until it spills

over into real life and everyone sees

those mistakes in full color – including

prospective future employers.

• Be clear about your position on

bullying. From the safe distance of a

screen, it’s easier for kids (and adults)

to say things they’d never say in person.

Teach your kids to handle problems

constructively offline and avoid

engaging in attacks on others through

social media, email and other platforms.

College Students

• Reinforce the risks. Once they’re

on their own, kids may feel more

liberated to make their own choices

online. However, college students

are easy prey for identity theft and

worse. Remind them what’s at stake

if they fail to protect their identity

and private information, like where

they live and what they do on a regular

basis.

• Teach smart practices. With all

the independence that comes with

college life, this is an ideal time for

your student to take personal responsibility

for his or her online security,

including learning about virus protection,

updating software, avoiding

scams and backing up data.

CRITTER

CORNER

Do you like Peaches?

Meet Peaches! Peaches is a sweet and super

calm dog! She’s low energy and is very low maintenance.

She loves to sit on the couch and sleep.

She likes to eat alone and she’s getting on a good

routine of when to eat and go to the bathroom!

She’s mostly potty trained, she just has to acclimate

to new environments and get used to the

routine of her owner. She’s not scared or bothered

by loud noises like vaccums or alarms. She

loves to meet new people and is always wagging

her tail. When she encounters other dogs, shes a

bit timid and might get a little scared. Shes loves

the company of people and scratches and playing

in the grass. Peaches deserves a loving owner!

vanities offer luxurious personalization that

is specially made for your space.

The Cartesian line features wall-mounted,

floating vanities with clean lines that are

an ideal centerpiece for your bathroom. If

you’re looking to add a little drama to your

space, opt for statement pieces like the Profiles

modular vanities.

I would encourage every customer looking

at our products to use our 3D Visualizer

tool. This intuitive design tool empowers

users to envision and create their

ideal bathroom sanctuary with precision

and ease. The online tool can streamline

your product selection, enhance your decision

making and allow you to share your

designs with contractors, designers or family

members, ensuring everyone involved is

aligned on the project vision for a truly luxurious

bathroom.

Safe & Successful

Party Advice

The Tallahassee Police

Department (TDP) is

accustomed to the presence

of noise and party related

problems. It is only when

parties compromise the

personal safety of citizens,

impact the private property

of another citizen, or

negatively impact the quality

of life within neighborhoods

that TPD takes action.

The TPD does not

proactively seek out parties

to make enforcement efforts.

However, if a neighbor or

any impacted person calls

to complain about a party or

noise problem, the TPD will

respond to assist with that

complainant.

Best Advice for a Safe and

Successful Party includes:

• Ask your neighbors’

permission before throwing

a party.

• Agree to clean up after the

party.

• Leave a phone number

where your neighbors can

call you.

• Keep party attendance to a

reasonable number.

• Dismiss or remove the

unruly or uninvited.

• DO NOT allow underage

drinking. Even a single

underage drinker can result

in not only their arrest, but

also you as the party’s host.

• Make transportation

arrangements for anyone

who could be considered an

impaired driver.

• Accept the potential

consequences for party

hosts who do not follow the

rules.

• Review City Ordinance

regarding excessive sound
