Enjoying the Cornish Views

The past few months have been a real test - for many

of us. I’ve felt disconnected at times, unsettled by the

energy around us. With the state of the world, climate

shifts, rising costs, and a growing sense of disconnection,

it’s no wonder many of us are feeling heavy.

But when we stray from our essence, it becomes easy to

forget gratitude, lash out, or lose compassion. In those

moments, I’ve found that returning to simple, nourishing

acts can bring us home again.

Grow something from seed - watch how nature reminds

us of miracles. Choose kindness over judgement - we

never truly know what someone else is going through.

And be gentle with yourself too: rest well, eat to heal,

take walks, and reduce what no longer serves you.

I’m reminded of Ryan, a kind soul from Truro Homeless

Action Group - his memory lives in every small act of

goodness we offer. (See page 6)

If you’re struggling, know you’re not alone. I run

meditation sessions (see p27) and I’m always happy

to talk and like my furry friend above - get out into

nature and let the nature beings send you healing...

And don’t forget - smiling is free. Let’s share more

of them.

A fitting

send off

On the morning of Ryan’s funeral

(Friday 11th April) the team at Truro

Homeless Action Group’s breakfast

club held a heartfelt tribute in his

memory.

Ryan had been a

regular at the

breakfast club and

was well known by

both volunteers

and fellow clients.

Though he faced

many personal

challenges, including

addiction and

psychological issues,

Ryan was deeply liked and remembered for

the good man he was beneath the surface.

why Ryan had touched so many hearts and

peppered with funny ‘Ryan’ moments. He

was a son, brother, father, and friend - and his

memory will live on in those who knew him.

Though his physical presence is no longer

with us, Ryan’s spirit continues to inspire

kindness, compassion, and the importance of

seeing the person beyond their struggles.

Rest in peace, Ryan.

Volunteers spoke warmly of his character,

and a table was set up with photos and

memories to honour his life and skills. Some

clients also wrote personal messages - small

but meaningful reflections of the impact

Ryan had made.

Later that day,

Ryan’s family,

several volunteers

and clients from

THAG, a few staff

from St Petrocs and

friends attended the

service at Penmount

Crematorium in

Truro.

The funeral was

Remember your Dad on

Father’s Day

Sunday 15th June 2025

No-Mow-May is

great for insects!

words by Anna Cormie -

Assistant Countryside Ranger

As we allow our gardens to grow during

No-Mow-May, our insects will take full

advantage of the extra food and habitat it

will provide – a great reason to allow at least

some of your garden to grow a bit wild.

One such insect you may see, and that we see plenty

of in Coosebean, is the Violet Oil Beetle (Meloe

violaceus). A slightly odd-looking beetle with a large

abdomen bulging from the wing case, it is usually

a shiny violet in colour but can also be bronze or

black. These beetles are most likely to be seen

on warm sunny days and are a good indicator for

healthy areas of countryside. Adult oil beetles can

be found munching on the petals and leaves of

flowering plants and grasses such as dandelions and

lesser celandines – a great reason for participating in

No-Mow-May!

Female violet oil beetles will lay up to a thousand

eggs in one burrow! When the larvae (triungulins)

hatch, they look for the nearest flower and climb

up to the top where they will then wait for a solitary

bee to arrive. The larvae will then attach itself to the

bee and get a lift back to the bee’s nest where it will

eat their pollen store and even the eggs or larvae of

the bees. Not the kind of houseguest you want! The

larvae will stay in the nest until it has pupated and will

emerge as an adult violet oil beetle the next spring.

Populations of violet oil beetles are declining as they

rely on solitary bees to be able to complete their life

cycle and as we lose our wildflower rich grasslands,

our bee populations are declining too. This is one

example of many that shows how important nature

is at all levels and how one change cascades

throughout the ecosystem for better or worse.

GARDENING

From Frost Fleece

to Flourishing:

Garden Tips

While May and June generally bring

warmer weather, late frosts can still

occur across the UK. Keep fleece or

horticultural fabric handy to protect

vulnerable seedlings (tomatoes, peppers,

courgettes, beans) overnight if frost is

forecast. Even a light frost can damage

or kill young plants.

• Harden Off Indoor-Sown Plants Gradually

to UK Conditions: Plants raised indoors are

accustomed to a sheltered environment. Before

transplanting them permanently outdoors,

gradually acclimatise them to UK weather

conditions over 7-10 days. Place them in a

sheltered spot during the day, increasing the

amount of time they spend outside, and bring

them back indoors at night. This process,

known as “hardening off,” prevents shock and

helps them thrive.

• Support Climbing Plants Early as They

Put on Spring Growth: May and June see a

surge in growth for many climbing plants like

sweet peas, beans, clematis, and climbing

roses. Provide support early on with canes,

netting, trellises, or wires to encourage them

to climb in the desired direction and prevent

stems from breaking in wind or under their

own weight.

• Deadhead Spring-Flowering Bulbs and

Early Perennials to Encourage Future

Blooms: As spring-flowering bulbs like

daffodils and tulips fade, deadhead them

by removing the spent flower heads. Leave

the foliage to die back naturally, as this is

how the bulbs replenish their energy stores

for next year’s display. Similarly, deadhead

early-flowering perennials to encourage more

blooms later in the season.

• Water Newly Planted Trees, Shrubs, and

Veg Regularly During Establishment: While

established plants become more resilient,

newly planted trees, shrubs, and vegetable

seedlings need consistent watering during

May and June to help their root systems

establish in the surrounding soil. Water deeply

at the base of the plant, especially during

dry spells, ensuring the soil is moist but not

waterlogged.

• Stay Vigilant for Common UK Garden

Pests and Diseases: With warmer and often

more humid conditions, May and June can

see an increase in common garden pests and

diseases. Regularly inspect your plants for

aphids, slugs, snails, blackspot on roses, and

mildew. Early detection allows for less drastic

intervention, such as hand-picking pests or

using organic pest control methods.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Enjoying Walks

Together with

your Dog

When enjoying walks with your dog,

it’s essential to consider the specific

details of each route to ensure safety

and fun for both you and your canine

companion.

Dog-Friendly Routes: Most walks don’t

have dog bans, but the suitability of each

one depends on your dog’s personality and

behaviour. For coastal walks, many have

unfenced cliffs, so it’s vital to keep your dog on

a lead. The RNLI recommends this for safety.

If your dog falls, immediately dial 999 and ask

for the Coastguard - your phone will send your

location automatically.

Road Crossings and Lanes: Some routes may

involve crossing busy roads or quieter lanes.

The route map provides this information,

allowing you to plan accordingly. Always keep

your dog on a lead in these areas for their

safety and yours.

Stiles and Barriers: Many routes feature stiles,

and depending on the type, you may need

to lift your dog over them. The construction

of stiles varies, from classic wooden ones over

fences to ancient stone steps. Information on

whether a route has stiles and whether they are

dog-friendly is provided. In some cases, stiles

are wired with barbed wire, but you can carry

foam pipe insulation in your rucksack to cover

the wire for added safety.

Livestock Encounters: Livestock is often

present along footpaths, especially in rural

areas, as grazing is part of land management.

While it’s hard to predict, some routes are less

likely to have livestock. In fields with livestock,

particularly sheep, ensure your dog is on a lead,

as it is an offence for dogs to be “at large”

around sheep. Always respect the Countryside

Code and be prepared for any unexpected

encounters.

By keeping these considerations in mind,

you can enjoy stress-free walks with your dog,

exploring beautiful landscapes while staying

safe and responsible.

News from

Truro BID

Truro BID delivers events, projects

and services for Truro, Truro’s

businesses and everyone working in

the city centre which are over and

above the services provided by local

authorities and statutory agencies.

They are business led & not for profit.

A big thank you to all the businesses and

residents who took part in the two day City

Clean Up event that we organised for March,

in association with Newham BID. Around 80

people volunteered, and 71 bin bags were

filled with rubbish!

Now that the weather is getting warmer,

our small team is busy preparing for two

summer events which aim to bring additional

residents and visitors to the city, and therefore

potentially benefit many of Truro’s resident

businesses.

We’re pleased to be organising Children’s

Day for the eighth year on Saturday 21st

June. The day will feature mostly free activities

including spectacular mountain bike shows,

a scooter / bike obstacle course for children,

have-a-go at circus skills, family-friendly

stalls, along with in-store activities and offers

in some of Truro’s shops and eateries. For

more details see the advert on page 6.

On Sunday 6th July we will be bringing back

the Truro Classic Car Show for the third year.

It will be a chance to enjoy a wide variety

of cherished classic and vintage cars and

motorcycles from the 1930’s to the 1990’s

in the city centre, along with automobilia

stalls and live music. There will be a small

selection of new cars on display from local

dealers, including from Vospers.

The Truro Classic Car Show is both free to

attend and to exhibit vehicles. MacMillan

Cancer Support will be collecting on the

day for those who wish to make a voluntary

donation. If you have a classic or vintage

vehicle you’d like to exhibit at the show,

please apply at: www.trurobid.co.uk.

Both Children’s Day and the Truro Classic Car

Show are sponsored by Coodes Solicitors and

full event details are at: www.visittruro.org.uk

To be able to monitor footfall in the city

we fund footfall counters which measure

pedestrian movements. It is encouraging

that our footfall data shows to the middle

of March 2025 a 6.3% increase of footfall

compared to last year.

On behalf of Truro’s businesses, please

do continue to support our cities shops,

eateries and service businesses as much as

you can. Truro businesses and colleagues

working in the city feel free to contact us

on 01872 273 999.

Hearing loss

Recognise the signs

and embrace the

transformative

benefits of hearing

aids.

In our vibrant world filled with

conversations and sounds, being aware

of the early signs of hearing loss can

greatly enhance your experiences and

connections. If you or a loved one often

find yourselves asking people to repeat

themselves (or prefer to watch television

at a louder volume), these may be signs

that it’s time to take action.

Addressing hearing loss can lead to

remarkable benefits. Hearing aids can

improve your communication skills, help

you navigate social situations with ease,

and boost your overall confidence.

Additionally, they promote safety by

keeping you alert to your surroundings

and important sounds, such as alarms,

allowing for a more active and fulfilling

lifestyle. Many users experience a

renewed sense of joy and connection as

they embrace better hearing.

If you or someone you know is

experiencing hearing loss, we

encourage you to reach out to us to

improve your quality of life. As a

family-run business with over 20 years

of experience, we offer personalised

care, top-quality hearing technology,

Mind, body and

spirit self care

Have you ever paused to read the

ingredients in your skincare products?

What we put on our skin doesn’t just sit there

- it’s absorbed into the body. This is especially

important when it comes to children’s skin,

which is more delicate and sensitive.

In a world filled with constant emails, pings,

notifications, and social media updates, our

minds are overloaded. Adults and children

alike are facing stress, anxiety, and even

physical reactions like skin issues and fatigue.

The pressure to keep up is real - and it’s

affecting our health more than we realise.

Now is the time to slow down, tune in, and

choose more consciously. Start with your

skincare. Read the ingredients, do your

research, and avoid harmful chemicals.

One trusted option is Tropic Skincare -

vegan, organic, preservative-free, and only

available through ambassadors. Contact

tropic@communitytogether.co.uk for more

information. Scan the QR code to browse

the full range of products.

And to calm the mind and reconnect with your

inner quiet voice, try Twin Hearts Meditations.

Sessions run at Shortlanesend Village Hall

on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays, and every

Thursday at K&M Hearing Solutions Clinic,

Kenwyn St, Truro. Visit pranichealingcornwall.

Eden Project talent

blooms at Cornwall

Garden Society’s

Spring Show

Budding horticulturalists from the Eden

Project showcased exceptional creativity

at this year’s Cornwall Garden Society

Spring Flower Show, often referred to as

the ‘Chelsea of the South West’.

Two show gardens, designed to the theme

A Place to Heal, were created by Eden

Project apprentices and Cornwall College

University Centre students. First-year

horticultural apprentices unveiled Eden’s

Apothecary - a striking garden highlighting

the therapeutic and pharmaceutical power

of plants. Drawing on their Eden-based

training, they transformed the space into a

Victorian-style apothecary, where ancient herbal

traditions met modern science. Sustainability

was central, with repurposed materials and

plants grown at Eden’s Growing Point nursery.

Among the display were plants such as

Foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea), traditionally

used for heart conditions, and the striking

Lobelia cardinalis, with emerging research

into its healing potential. The garden also

encouraged awareness of biodiversity loss

and promoted regenerative gardening as a

solution.

Meanwhile, Garden and Landscape Design

students presented Echoes of Tranquillity - a

calming, Japanese-inspired space designed

for reflection. Featuring a dry riverbed, water

feature, and lush layered planting, the garden

invited visitors to connect with nature and find

a sense of peace. The project allowed students

to apply skills in digital design, layout planning,

and botanical aesthetics.

Both gardens received enthusiastic praise

from visitors, with Eden’s apprentices earning

the additional honour of the Cornwall

Garden Society Plantsman Award for

introducing exciting new cultivars of

Kangaroo paw, now displayed in the

Mediterranean Biome.

Catherine Cutler, Head of Horticulture at the

Eden Project, praised the students’ talent

and passion: “It’s inspiring to see the next

generation of horticulturists sharing important

messages through such beautiful, meaningful

designs.”

COMMUNITY NEWS

To Wind Up

Truro Civic

Society?

The Truro Civic Society was formed in

1962 in response to major town centre

development proposals. It sought to

balance change with the conservation

of the town’s built heritage, promoting

high-quality design. It quickly gained

wide support.

Over the decades, the Society has

contributed significantly to Truro. In recent

years, it has focused on its website, expertly

managed by Webmaster Ian Hibberd. As

the planning system evolved, the Society’s

role diminished. However, it continues to

be represented on the Truro Conservation

Area Advisory Committee by Vice Chair

Paddy McCready and played a key role

with the late Patrick Taylor in establishing

the ‘Truro Local List’, now part of the Truro

Neighbourhood Plan.

Since lockdown, the Society has also

organised the annual Civic Awards, held

each March at Truro Methodist Church,

with thanks to Paul Caruana’s leadership.

Your committee believes that long tenures in

office can limit fresh ideas. We now ask: does

the Society remain relevant, or has its time

come to a natural close?

We invite you to attend the AGM, share your

views, and help decide the Society’s future.

Should it continue, new leadership is vital. If

not, this may be the right time to respectfully

close.

Yours sincerely,

Malcolm Bell (Chair), Paddy McCready

(Vice Chair), Caroline Jones (Treasurer),

Bert Biscoe (Secretary), Paul Caruana

(Civic Awards), Ian Hibberd (Webmaster)
