NIGEL SYLVESTER X AIR JORDAN 4:

“BRICK BY BRICK”

A CELEBRATION OF RESILIENCE AND STYLE

Nigel Sylvester, the trailblazing BMX athlete known for his fearless style

and cultural impact, has teamed up with Jordan Brand to introduce the Air

Jordan 4 “Brick By Brick”. This stunning collaboration brings together the

essence of Sylvester’s personal journey and the iconic legacy of the Air Jordan

series, resulting in a design that is as thought-provoking as it is stylish.

30 Apr 2025

www.magzoid.com

The Air Jordan 4 “Brick By Brick” makes an unforgettable

visual statement with its fiery red-orange

suede upper, a color scheme that embodies grit,

determination, and the effort required to build success

brick by brick. This bold palette flows seamlessly

into the matching red midsole, creating a unified look that

commands attention.

Subtle off-white detailing on the lace cages and outsole

adds dimension to the design, balancing its vibrant

hues with a sense of understated sophistication. Unique

to this collaboration is Sylvester’s personalized “BIKE AIR”

logo, prominently featured on the heel tab, replacing the

traditional Jumpman logo. This signature element nods

to Sylvester’s BMX roots while bridging the gap between

sportswear and streetwear.

The Story Behind “Brick By Brick”

The inspiration behind this collaboration stems from Sylvester’s

personal philosophy: the belief that success is

built incrementally, one step—or one brick—at a time. This

ethos resonates deeply with his journey from an ambitious

BMX rider to a cultural icon who seamlessly blends sport,

art, and fashion.

Sylvester’s mantra emphasizes the importance of embracing

challenges and using them as opportunities to

grow. “Every fall, every failure, every lesson learned adds

to the foundation of your success,” he stated in an interview.

The “Brick By Brick” theme serves as both a tribute

to this process and an encouragement to others to approach

life with resilience and perseverance.

Crafting a Narrative Through Sneakers

The Air Jordan 4 has long been a canvas for storytelling,

and Sylvester’s iteration takes this tradition to new heights.

From the premium suede materials to the carefully considered

details, every element of the shoe reflects his passion

and creativity.

The fiery tones of the shoe evoke a sense of energy

and determination, while the inclusion of BMX-inspired

details—like the “BIKE AIR” branding—anchors the design

firmly in Sylvester’s world. Even the shoe’s packaging

reinforces its theme, featuring brick-inspired textures and

motivational quotes.

GHIBLI AI

WHY SHOULD YOU BE WORRIED

ABOUT THE GHIBLI AI TREND?

In a world of rapid consumerism and ever-growing and ever-dying trends, where what’s hot today

may not be hot tomorrow, the Studio Ghibli AI trend is a glaring issue that must be addressed.

The concern lies not only for artists but for human beings and media consumers. Artists who

spend years honing their craft in various mediums suddenly find their entire life’s work confronted

by just a few prompts and an entity that can replicate it in seconds. So why should you care?

46 Apr 2025 www.magzoid.com

Simply because Art is the narrative

through which History is most often

represented. From the first cave

paintings to the Hieroglyphs of

Egypt, various art forms have shown us the

richness and depth of civilizations across

time. A very important medium of storytelling.

Studio Ghibli, which is the brainchild of

Hayao Miyazaki, a creative mind like no other,

an animator extraordinaire whose work often

highlights the beauty and serenity of life

through the real and the mystical. Miyazaki’s

stories show the very human elements we

experience in life. A very common ingredient

in this experience is pain. And pain is something

that’s ingrained not only in the Japanese

ethos of art, but also in the way Studio

Ghibli and Miyazaki work.

We all have fond memories of the Studio

Ghibli movies, but often overlook the amount

of time Miyazaki and his team dedicated to

those wonderful scenes that we hold so dear

to our hearts.

The tenacity and love for the craft that

Studio Ghibli has known few bounds. Case

in point being the 4-second scene that you

see above, which took 1 year and 3 months

to complete. Each frame is hand-drawn and

hand-painted to masterfully depict a very

human scenario that only humans who’ve

experienced can depict. We’ve similar memories

of the above scenario in our own lives.

www.magzoid.com Apr 2025

The Ghibli way

A user on Reddit made a comment on the

above scene, very aptly highlighting the effort

by stating:

• “All are hand-drawn and painted with water

colour.”

• “24 fps for 4 seconds is 96 images”

• “6.4 images/month, 1/3 of an image in a

single 8 hr work day”

• “Eiji Yamamori was 46 in 2013, if he

worked until retirement at 64, he could animate

57.6 seconds”

• “If he started at 18 it would have been

147.2 seconds”

• “Eiji Yamamori is one the most talented

and hardworking animators that has

worked for Hayao Miyazaki”

This observation puts into perspective the

dedication these artists hold for their craft. A

multi-billion dollar corporation coming in and

47

GHIBLI AI

sweeping on Miyazaki’s work and using it as

a quick gag is insulting to many artists.

A user on Instagram shared an experience

they had with their child, who put in

hours to draw a picture. When confronted

with the AI, which replicated a better result,

the child was obviously heartbroken. In that

moment, all the love and effort that the child

put in were rendered obsolete. But in an outcome-based

society, we often fail to notice

that there is a human element in our daily

work and our art, too. Our emotions, when

synchronised with our human experience,

synthesize something far more priceless

than a cheap copy or a flawless artwork.

48 Apr 2025 www.magzoid.com

They create a moment, a moment of pure

ecstasy, where we bask in the sum total of

all that we’ve been through in our lives until

then.

That is one of the reasons that makes Studio

Ghibli’s movies so amazing, when you

get to know the people behind the craft. It’s

the fact that this group of animators, who’ve

spent years honing their craft, push themselves

and channel their human emotions

and experience into a medium that we enjoy.

Ghibli AI trend, Data, Intellectual Rights

Concern- connecting the dots

Open AI has also received criticism on its

use of the above trend to gather information

from people, and many concerns have

been raised on the basis of what comes

under copyright infringement for AI. Just a

year ago, there was talk around Meta using

artists’ profiles to train their AI models, and

many artists were quick to point out how this

infringes on their work. This led to a lot of artists

deleting their works from Meta platforms

and shifting to a new platform called Cara.

Cara, which was founded by Zhang Jingna,

an artist herself, wanted a place where

artists could have a say over who used their

artwork. Providing the artist’s rights over their

intellectual property and controlling who

uses it and for what. Meta and other software

companies have come under fire for the

rampant violation of intellectual properties

being committed and how this is hurting not

only the lives of ordinary people but artists

as well. The growing concern for regulations

to be put in place and what comes under fair

use is picking up steam in all sectors of the

art industry.

Videos of Miyazaki in 2016 criticizing AI

have resurfaced amidst the trend, and a lot

of artists took to social media to raise concern

and awareness on the matter. Mr Miyazaki

told FarOut Magazine,

“I can’t watch this stuff and find [it] interesting.

Whoever creates this stuff has

no idea what pain is whatsoever. I am utterly

disgusted. If you really want to make

creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I

would never wish to incorporate this technology

into my work at all.”

He further said,

“I strongly feel that this is an insult to

life itself.”

The director of the world-renowned anime

One Piece, Megumi Ishitani, posted on Instagram,

stating that Studio Ghibli should sue

OpenAI for copying their style.

“There’s no way Ghibli would officially

give permission, right? This was without

permission! Why is this allowed…?”

What would Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki

feel?

At the end of the day, it all comes to the laborious

efforts of artists, the experiences,

and the very essence of being a human that

makes their art worthwhile. The question

we, as consumers and partakers in trends,

should ask ourselves is:

Are we as a society so hungry for trends that

we forget who we hurt while taking part in

a trend?

Would you like to see an entity take your

work without your permission?

Replicate in seconds what you spent

hours creating, and push out a half-baked

knock-off?

And more importantly, ‘Is that really Art?’

or is our will to create and appreciate art

slowly dying on the back of AI?

KARIM JABBARI AND THE LIGHT OF

CALLIGRAPHY

Karim Jabbari is a renowned Tunisian calligraphy and light artist celebrated for blending traditional Arabic

script with contemporary light art. His work has been showcased globally, with permanent pieces in prestigious

institutions such as the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre in Kuwait, the King Abdulaziz Center

for World Culture (Ithra) in Saudi Arabia, and the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies in

Riyadh. Jabbari has participated in major international events, including the First Islamic Biennale in Jeddah

and the Dubai Calligraphy Biennale.

Notable large-scale projects include the longest mural in North Africa in Kasserine and the illuminated

minaret in Sousse, Tunisia. As the founder of the Streets Urban Festival in Tunis, Jabbari remains committed

to celebrating Arabic calligraphy in public spaces while reimagining cultural identity within contemporary urban

contexts. Recognized among the Top 30 Public Artists by the International Award for Public Art (IAPA),

Jabbari continues to push the boundaries of calligraphy through light, movement, and spatial engagement.

In Dubai, Jabbari’s solo exhibition “Vertical Horizon / 361 Degrees” at Inloco Gallery (January 29 – May 30,

2025) serves as the final chapter of a three-part exploration of lost tradition and urban nostalgia. This exhibition

blends calligraphy-based artworks, light installations, and photography to examine the intersection of

heritage and modernity .

The exhibition’s visual narrative is enriched by the photography of Grigoriy Yaroshenko, a Russian documentary

photographer and visual storyteller based in Dubai.

In this interview, Karim Jabbari reflects on his journey as an artist, delving into the childhood experiences

that shaped his passion for calligraphy, the cultural and historical significance of Arabic script, and his

innovative approach to preserving this art form.

www.magzoid.com

Interview with Karim Jabbari

Q: Can you share how you began your

journey into calligraphy and how the medium

bridges tradition and modernity, especially

through your use of light art?

A: One day, I encountered calligraphy, began

writing, and now here I am, an international

artist. That’s the simple answer. But

in truth, my connection with calligraphy is

deeply rooted in my childhood. My family

and I were under house arrest due to my

father’s political opposition to the regime. I

was 11 years old, confined to our home, and

had little to occupy myself. My father had a

library filled with books, and I found solace

in them.

I was mesmerized by the craft of writing—

the beauty of the letters and how human

hands could create something so intricate.

This fascination turned into a lifelong love for

calligraphy. It became a way to connect with

people, to express myself, and to give back

to the art that shaped my social identity as a

student. For me, writing is not just an act; it’s

a statement of existence. Calligraphy also

allowed me to feel grounded during a turbulent

childhood and ultimately inspired me to

bring this timeless art to modern mediums,

including light art.

Q: How has the Arabic language influenced

your love for calligraphy?

A: Arabic calligraphy plays a critical role in

my work. In recent years, I’ve found myself

fighting to preserve the craft because we are

losing this beautiful tradition at an alarming

rate. Losing it disconnects us from the chain

of knowledge passed down through generations.

Writing is a way to keep this link alive.

It’s a serious matter—more so than many

realize. Today, people rely heavily on digital

tools, but during a crisis, when technology

fails, the ability to write becomes indispensable.

I’ve taken on a mission to highlight the

beauty of calligraphy through workshops,

street art, and exhibitions. These efforts

allow me to inspire people and help them

understand the cultural and historical significance

of this art form. The rich, dense nature

of the Arabic language adds to its beauty; it

carries profound literary and spiritual weight

that resonates through every stroke of the

pen.

Q: What role did your father’s library and

the manuscripts play in shaping your artistic

journey?

A: My father’s library was transformative for

me. It contained books that were 300 to 400

years old—fragile treasures no one was allowed

to touch. When my father was imprisoned

for 13 years, those books became a reminder

of him and his presence in our home.

I began exploring them, captivated by the

texture of old paper, the smell of ink, and the

intricacies of the handwriting.

This visual and sensory journey deeply

influenced my artistic style. The calligraphy

I create today—such as the pieces in my recent

solo show—is directly inspired by those

manuscripts. My art is not just about writing;

it’s about preserving a connection to my personal

history and cultural heritage. Through

these ancient texts, I also understood the

power of storytelling and documentation that

continues to shape my creative vision.

Q: How do you incorporate messages and

inspirations into your calligraphy?

A: My inspirations come from life itself—the

things I read, feel, and experience, as well

as my interactions with people. I document

these inspirations in sketchbooks to revisit

them later. Calligraphy, especially Arabic

calligraphy, has a sacred dimension. Historically,

it was used by civilizations to express

power and culture. Letters were written with

precision and beauty to convey messages of

love, war, and alliances.

I once did a TED Talk in Casablanca

about the migration of calligraphy styles with

shifts in power. For instance, the Kufi script

originated in Iraq, then evolved as political

power moved to Tunisia and later to Andalusia,

Spain. This evolution illustrates the enduring

cultural significance of calligraphy as

an art form that speaks to the soul. I aim to

innovate within this tradition by using light art

and unconventional materials to make calligraphy

more accessible and dynamic.

Q: How was your experience working with

Khalil Abdul Wahid and connecting your

work to Satwa?

A: Khalil is a wonderful person, and working

with him was a highlight of my career. Satwa

is a place full of life and authenticity, with its

bustling shops, street food, and human interactions.

Collaborating with Khalil allowed

me to connect my solo show to Dubai—to

ground my work in the local culture rather

than merely presenting it as an external addition.

This connection made the show more

impactful for the local audience.

Exploring Satwa’s urban nostalgia inspired

me to create art that bridges past

and present, reflecting the human stories

embedded in these spaces. It’s about celebrating

the vibrancy of everyday life and recognizing

its role in shaping cultural identity.

Q: As the founder of the Street Urban Festival

in Tunis, how do you see public art

preserving cultural memory in the face of

modernization?

A: Public art is a way to leave a mark—a testament

to ideas, thoughts, and messages.

Street art, in particular, preserves cultural

memory by engaging with the community

and raising awareness about societal issues.

My work aims to inspire others and

foster a deeper connection with the spaces

we inhabit. It’s about innovation, collaboration,

and ensuring that art remains relevant

and accessible.

In Tunis, I’ve worked to ensure that public

spaces reflect the stories of their inhabitants.

My street art becomes a part of the city’s fabric,

resisting the erasure of memory caused

by rapid modernization. It’s both a protest

and a celebration of what makes each place

unique.

Q: The exhibition title, “Vertical Horizon /

361 Degrees,” is intriguing. What inspired

it?

A: “Vertical Horizon” is a nod to a song by

the French hip-hop group IAM, whose poetry

deeply resonates with me. The title reflects

the disconnection of modern life, where

high-rise living isolates people despite their

physical proximity. It’s about questioning societal

norms and the illusions perpetuated

by media and industry.

“361 Degrees” represents an intentional

shift—one degree beyond a full circle—symbolizing

change and awareness. The exhibition

explores how modernity distorts traditional

values and challenges viewers to look

beyond the surface. It’s a call to reevaluate

what truly matters in our lives. Together, the

titles suggest a balance between reflection

and action, urging audiences to engage critically

with the world around them.

Q: What advice would you give to other

artists striving to preserve cultural heritage

through their work?

A: Innovate and collaborate. Use diverse mediums

and engage with communities to create

meaningful connections. Public art can

inspire and educate, ensuring that cultural

heritage remains alive and relevant. Always

strive to leave a positive impact through your

work. At the same time, stay true to your own

narrative, as authenticity is what resonates

most with people. By anchoring your art in

personal and cultural history, you create

something timeless.

BREAKING RECORDS IN HOROLOGY:

VACHERON CONSTANTIN’S LES

CABINOTIERS SOLARIA

A WORLD RECORD IN DESIGN AND INNOVATION

Vacheron Constantin has once again raised the bar in the world of watchmaking with the

introduction of the Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication – La Première. This

masterpiece of innovation is not only a celebration of technical excellence but also a world

record holder, boasting an unprecedented 41 complications. It redefines what is possible

in a wristwatch while emphasizing user-friendly design and luxury craftsmanship.

Exclusive Insights from Vacheron Constantin

In a conversation with an external publication,

Christian Selmoni, Style & Heritage

Director at Vacheron Constantin, shared

detailed insights into the groundbreaking

design and technical achievements of the

Les Cabinotiers Solaria. Below are highlights

from his interview:

56 Apr 2025

www.magzoid.com

What are the key technical elements of

this timepiece?

“Because it is the most complicated wristwatch

in the history of horology, with an

unprecedented 41 complications, the mechanism

had to be arranged in the most logical

and compact way possible. The main

objective was to bring together all the main

complications—timekeeping, astronomical,

chronograph, and chiming—on a single

base plate. Thanks to this construction,

it was possible to create a wristwatch with

harmonious proportions. Many of the innovations

of this watch are related to the solutions

found to avoid adding bulk and to gain in energy

efficiency. The 72-hour power reserve

attests to the latter.”

So how do the dimensions of this watch

respond to the standards of Haute Horlogerie?

“The miniaturisation of the movement is an

essential point—a real watchmaking feat.

Accommodating 1,521 components in a

case for a chiming watch with a diameter

of 45mm and a thickness of 14.99mm was

indeed a challenge. Everything about the

design of Calibre 3655 has been thought out

with space constraints in mind, especially

regarding the minute repeater with a fourgong

and four-hammers Westminster chime.

Redesigned with more compact dimensions

and greater mass, the hammers and gongs

are positioned on either side of the base

plate to gain height and efficiency.”

Why is this piece referred to as an astronomical watch?

“This watch occupies a special place in horology, especially since it integrates astronomical

functions related to the apparent course of the Sun across the sky. It is rare for a timepiece to

display civil time with central hours and minutes, solar time with equation of time display, and

sidereal time coupled with the movement of the constellations. Thanks to an innovative mechanism,

it displays in real-time the position of the sun, its height, the time of its culmination, and

its angle of declination. This construction requires differentiation in the gear trains to account

for the peculiarities of the solar system—groundbreaking feats for a mechanical wristwatch.

The third astronomical complication—sidereal time—linked to the split-seconds chronograph

function and displayed on the back of the watch, allows us to determine when a chosen

star will appear in our field of vision.

These highly complicated mechanisms are part of a long tradition of astronomical watches

at Vacheron Constantin, dating back to the early 19th century and including the Les Cabinotiers

Celestia presented in 2017, which has 23 functions inspired by astronomy.”

You mentioned eight years of development for this watch. How many people were involved

in the project?

“The creation of this new timepiece was different from the Reference 57260 and The Berkley

Grand Complication pieces with a record number of complications—which each occupied

three watchmakers for respectively eight and eleven years. A single watchmaker is

behind the entire project of Les Cabinotiers Solaria. He designed the movement, imagined

the case—which is a direct response to the movement architecture—and guided the choice

of finishes to be applied to every element.”

Impact on Luxury Retail

This record-breaking timepiece has implications far beyond horology. It challenges the luxury

retail sector to rethink how innovation and storytelling can elevate customer experiences:

• Enhanced Engagement: By merging unparalleled complexity with a seamless user experience,

the Solaria fosters a deeper connection between product and client.

• A New Benchmark: The Solaria inspires retailers to curate products that embody excellence,

pushing the boundaries of craftsmanship and design.

• Heritage Meets Innovation: The Solaria’s narrative bridges centuries of horological expertise

with modern ingenuity, offering retailers a compelling story to share with discerning

clients.

The Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication – La Première is a milestone in

horology, blending record-breaking technical achievements with impeccable design. For

watch collectors, enthusiasts, and luxury retailers, this timepiece is not just a product—it’s a

statement of what is possible when artistry and innovation converge. As the luxury industry

evolves, the Solaria stands as a beacon of how design can transform the retail experience,

inspiring a new era of engagement and excellence.

RETAIL REINVENTED:

DESIGNING THE FUTURE OF LUXURY

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

In 2025, luxury retail is undergoing a transformative shift. Traditional brick-and-mortar stores are

evolving into immersive environments tailored to individual preferences and committed to sustainability.

In the luxury sector, personalization often involves bespoke services, such as custom

tailoring or exclusive product lines informed by AI-driven customer insights.

60 Apr 2025 www.magzoid.com

Sustainability is interpreted through

eco-conscious store designs that

use renewable materials, energy-efficient

systems, and practices like

carbon offsetting, ensuring that opulence

aligns with environmental responsibility.

This evolution is driven by technological

advancements, changing consumer expectations,

and a growing emphasis on sustainability.

This presents an unprecedented

opportunity to redefine the shopping experience

for designers, creatives, and luxury

brands.

Immersive and Experiential Retail Spaces

Modern consumers seek more than just

products; they desire memorable experiences.

Luxury retailers are responding by creating

immersive environments that engage

multiple senses. For instance:

• Burberry’s Flagship Store offers a theatrical

experience where customers engage

all five senses, blending digital and physical

elements seamlessly.

• Aston Martin’s Q New York Showroom

transcends traditional retail by combining

elements of a lounge, gallery, and immersive

multimedia experience, allowing customers

to envision and personalize their

vehicles in a highly engaging setting.

These examples highlight how luxury retail

spaces are becoming destinations that

foster emotional connections with customers,

turning a simple shopping trip into an

unforgettable journey. For instance, studies

have shown that immersive retail environments

increase the likelihood of repeat

visits by 30%, and customer testimonials

from brands like Burberry and Aston Martin

indicate a significant rise in brand loyalty

and long-term customer engagement. This

demonstrates that emotional resonance directly

contributes to both customer retention

and revenue growth.

Integration of Advanced Technologies

Technology is at the forefront of retail innovation,

redefining customer engagement:

• Augmented Reality (AR): Customers can

visualize products in their own spaces,

enhancing decision-making and reducing

returns. For example, high-end fashion

brands are using AR to let customers try

on outfits virtually.

• Cashierless Stores: Carrefour City+ in

Dubai exemplifies seamless shopping,

eliminating the need for traditional checkouts

and reducing wait times.

• Smart Mirrors: These mirrors not only

show how clothing fits but also suggest

accessories, colors, and styles, creating

a curated shopping experience.

By integrating cutting-edge technology,

luxury retailers are setting new benchmarks

for convenience and sophistication. These

innovations also address critical challenges,

such as privacy concerns, by implementing

robust data encryption and transparent customer

consent processes. Additionally, technologies

like AR and AI are bridging the digital

divide by offering intuitive, user-friendly

interfaces that cater to varying levels of

tech-savviness among customers, ensuring

inclusivity without compromising luxury.

Hyper-Personalization Through Data Analytics

Personalization is becoming a cornerstone

of the luxury retail experience. By leveraging

AI and data analytics, retailers can:

• Dynamically adjust store layouts based on

shopping patterns.

• Offer targeted promotions and personalized

recommendations through AI assistants.

• Tailor product lines to regional and individual

customer preferences.

For example, Ralph Lauren’s connected

fitting rooms provide real-time customization

options, offering an unparalleled level of personalization.

This level of attention not only

enhances customer satisfaction but also fosters

deep brand loyalty.

Emphasis on Sustainability and

Eco-Friendly Designs

Sustainability is no longer optional; it’s a

necessity in luxury retail. According to a

report by Bain & Company, 68% of luxury

consumers consider a brand’s sustainability

practices when making purchase decisions.

This trend is also reflected in initiatives like

LVMH’s LIFE 360 program, which aims to

integrate sustainability into every aspect of

its operations, from eco-design to responsible

sourcing, setting a benchmark for the

industry. Retailers are adopting eco-friendly

practices, including:

• Using recyclable and upcycled materials

in store design.

• Incorporating energy-efficient systems to

reduce environmental impact.

• Biophilic design elements, such as indoor

plants and natural lighting, creating calm-

ing, eco-conscious environments.

For instance, Stella McCartney’s flagship

store in London integrates sustainable

practices with luxury aesthetics, appealing

to environmentally aware shoppers without

compromising elegance.

Sensory Branding and Atmosphere Optimization

Sensory branding enhances the retail experience

by appealing to multiple senses.

Music, lighting, scent, and even temperature

are optimized to create inviting environments:

• Ambient Music: Adjusting the tempo of

music based on the time of day influences

shopping behavior and enhances mood.

• Signature Scents: Luxury stores like

Chanel use custom fragrances to create

an olfactory brand identity that customers

associate with exclusivity.

By crafting a multi-sensory experience,

luxury retailers can differentiate themselves

and deepen customer engagement. For instance,

Gucci’s ArtLab in Italy exemplifies

this approach by integrating visual art installations,

ambient music, and curated scents

that immerse visitors in the brand’s narrative.

This strategy has resulted in heightened

customer curiosity and an increase in time

spent within the store, directly impacting

sales and brand loyalty.

The Future of Luxury Retail Design

The future of luxury retail lies in creating

spaces that are immersive, personalized,

and sustainable. For designers and creatives,

this evolution presents an opportunity

to innovate and redefine the shopping

experience. By embracing trends such as

advanced technology, hyper-personalization,

and sustainable design, retailers can

exceed customer expectations and maintain

relevance in a rapidly changing market.

As luxury brands continue to push boundaries,

the next decade promises a blend of

artistry, technology, and customer-centric

innovation that will shape the future of retail.

CONVERSATION

GONZALO HERRERO

DELICADO

ON TECHNOLOGY, ART AND NFTS

68 Apr 2025 www.magzoid.com

1. This year’s theme, “After the Technological

Sublime,” highlights both the awe

and anxiety inspired by technological advancements.

How do you see artists navigating

this tension in their work, and what

kinds of narratives are emerging from that

space?

Today, I find two different kinds of artists

working with digital technologies. Some are

in awe of these advancements and mesmerised

by their technical possibilities. Others

are navigating the dual emotions of awe and

anxiety that surround digital innovation by

using technology not as an end in itself, but

as a tool to interrogate urgent social, political,

and ecological issues. For this edition

of Art Dubai Digital, we have brought together

a diverse constellation of artists and

thinkers—both emerging and established—

whose work reflects this tension. Rather than

focusing on the novelty of new tools, these

artists explore how digital media can expose

the invisible, give form to complex systems,

and surface critical narratives that resonate

globally.

One recurring theme is ecology. Many of

the works this year translate environmental

data into immersive, sensory experiences

that function as both reflection and activism.

Ouchhh’s MOTHEREARTH, for example,

uses AI and raw climate data to generate

a powerful visual sculpture that confronts

viewers with the scale of the crisis. Jacopo

Di Cera’s Retreat, composed of recycled

screens, documents glacial loss in the Alps,

evoking the material traces of environmental

collapse. Carbon Wake by BREAKFAST

transforms real-time global energy data into

a kinetic sculpture, directly linking individual

behaviour with planetary consequence in

real time.

2. You’ve taken a cross-disciplinary curatorial

approach for this edition, incorporating

AI, AR, and immersive installations.

How do you select works that not only utilize

technology but also critique or reflect

on its deeper implications for society and

the environment?

We’re seeing a clear shift from the initial excitement

around NFTs to a more nuanced,

critical engagement with technologies like

AI, blockchain, robotics, and immersive media.

What’s compelling is how artists working

in this space aren’t just asking viewers

to marvel at the technology—they’re inviting

them to feel something, to question something,

and ultimately, to care. Whether they

are fluent in these digital languages or still

learning to speak them, artists are using

their work to navigate the complexity of the

digital sublime. And from that space, new

narratives are emerging—ones that acknowledge

both the promise of innovation

and the urgency of the now.

3. With your background in architecture,

design, and environmental discourse,

how do these perspectives influence your

curatorial choices when it comes to digital

media and new tech-driven art?

I come from a background in architecture,

which is perhaps one of the most expansive

disciplines, connecting you to art, science,

design, sociology and much more. As a curator,

I’ve always been interested in exploring

cross-disciplinary approaches through

my exhibitions and projects, trying to unravel

the complexity of the world around us. This

has led me to build a particular focus on

technology and ecology. I have curated several

exhibitions that explore the connection

between technology and ecology. In 2019, I

co-curated an exhibition entitled Eco-Visionaries

which took place at the Royal Academy

of Arts in London and critically explored

how artists, designers and other creatives

are considering climate change. This was

followed by another exhibition, Tomorrow

Today, at the Museum of the Future in

Dubai, and the Ecocity World Summit 2023

in London, which I directed. My latest exhibition

Virtual Beauty, which was first housed

at HEK – House of Electronic Arts in Basel,

will be touring in London’s iconic Somerset

House this July. The exhibition investigates

the impact of digital technologies on definitions

of beauty today, offering a nuanced

approach to pressing, contemporary issues

and changing patterns in human psychology

and behaviour.

In summary, these are a few previous examples

that have led me to build an expansive

programme for Art Dubai Digital 2025

that hopefully will shed light on some of the

multi-layered complexities of today through

an engaging and thought-provoking experience.

4. Art Dubai Digital is now in its fourth edition

and continues to grow. In your view,

how is the Middle East—and Dubai in particular—positioning

itself within the global

digital art ecosystem?

Dubai’s government has made significant investments

in digitising the city over the past

decade, a commitment that has permeated

every facet of its development. The rise of

Web3 initiatives and crypto investment has

not only reshaped its technological landscape

but also catalysed the growth of a

dynamic and future-oriented art ecosystem.

Within this context, Art Dubai played a pioneering

role with the launch of Art Dubai

Digital in 2022—the only dedicated digital

section at a major international art fair. What

sets Art Dubai Digital apart is its curatorial

approach—one that moves beyond the

tech-driven hype to offer critical engagement,

artistic experimentation, and deeper

cultural dialogue among digital artists, galleries,

and institutions from around the world.

Dubai’s position at the intersection of East

and West, tradition and innovation, commercial

energy and intellectual enquiry, makes it

an ideal setting for this dialogue. Art Dubai

has embraced that complexity, creating a

space that is not only globally relevant but

also locally rooted. Our partner, Dubai Culture,

plays a key role in making this vision

possible, supporting the programme and

helping to build one of the most exciting

platforms globally for the exchange of ideas,

and for Dubai as a leading digital capital.

5. Looking at the lineup of galleries and

studios this year, from Seoul to Milan to

Jeddah, what trends or shifts are you observing

globally in digital art practice—

and what role do you think artists play in

shaping the technological futures we’re

heading toward?

Globally, we’re seeing a shift away from

technological novelty toward deeper, more

critical engagements with digital tools. The

artists in this year’s Art Dubai Digital—for instance,

Fuse and Ben Cullen Williams, who

present AI-generated videos with speculative

natural scenarios at Sevil Dolmaci gallery,

or Tatsuru Arai, whose AI-generated

flowers explore the intersection of technological

evolution and the natural world at

TAEX—are not merely adopting AI or immersive

media for spectacle, but using them

to interrogate our ecological, political, and

emotional realities. Another notable shift is

the blending of digital and physical, as artists

explore hybrid forms that merge algorithmic

aesthetics with material expression.

Artists today are crucial agents in shaping

our technological future—not just as users of

tools, but as critics and visionaries who help

us reflect on the ethics, biases, and possibilities

embedded in these systems. Their work

demystifies digital systems and brings a human

lens to emerging technologies, helping

us move beyond passive fascination and

toward more conscious, imaginative, and

inclusive engagements with the tools that

increasingly shape our lives.

MIRJAM VARADINIS ON

BAWWABA

THE GATEWAY THROUGH THE

CURATORIAL PROCESS

76 Apr 2025 www.magzoid.com

1. Bawwaba means “gateway”—what kind

of passage or transition do you hope this

year’s selection of artists represents, especially

in the context of today’s global

crises?

We are living in times of great political, social,

and ecological turmoil, and through Bawwaba

at Art Dubai 2025, I wanted to open

a gateway into imagining new forms of coexistence,

both among people and with our

planet. I believe art can help us define the

impossible and, at the same time, remember

common ground. This year’s selection

of artists explores those urgent questions,

offering reflections and visions for alternative

ways of living together. Karthik Pandian, for

example, connects to nature and creates an

environment that invites us to reflect on the

holy rivers of India and their relationship with

us human beings. Jorge Rosano Gamboa

explores the resources we rely on, honouring

pre-Hispanic techniques while offering new

perspectives on living in harmony with culture

and nature. Their works don’t just present

aesthetics, they present ways of thinking,

of being, of living together.

2. You’ve curated projects that often move

beyond institutional boundaries. How did

this curatorial philosophy influence your

approach to Bawwaba 2025?

My curatorial practice has always been

rooted in discovery and dialogue beyond

traditional spaces. With Bawwaba, I wanted

to bring together a diverse range of galleries—some

well-established and others just

starting to write their history—that represent

different geographies. This approach allows

unexpected encounters, both for the audience

and me as a curator. I see it as an

opportunity to create a space that’s more experimental,

more immersive, and more open

to new forms of expression. I’m particularly

interested in how these galleries, like different

species on our planet, interact and complement

each other, which I hope will lead to

many discoveries for visitors of the fair.

3. The participating artists come from a

wide range of geographies and cultural

contexts. What threads of connection

or dialogue did you observe emerging

across their works?

What I find incredibly powerful is how these

diverse voices echo each other, even when

they come from opposite sides of the globe.

Many of them are revisiting traditional materials—like

Gulnur Mukazhanova from Kazakhstan,

who uses wool as a medium for

abstract painting, or Kate Newby from New

Zealand, who also often works with natural

materials or elements of the outdoor environment,

such as light, rain, sun, and wind. Others,

like Mohammad Piryaee from Iran, are

channeling tactile, almost sculptural energy

into their canvases. Despite these differences

in geography and medium, they share a

deep concern for history and tradition as a

way to rethink the future. It’s a kind of global

conversation about how we might reconnect

with ancient knowledge of the past to open

up new ways of navigating the uncertainty

of the future.

4. Many of these artworks were created

recently or specifically for the fair. What

unique challenges or opportunities does

that bring to a project like this?

Bawwaba puts a spotlight on artworks made

in the year leading up to or specifically for

Art Dubai. Realizing a new work of art for

an exhibition or the fair is very exciting because

such a work is always created in close

collaboration with the artist. This means an

intensive exchange and dialogue with the

artist and an inspiring ping-pong of ideas

between artist and curator. At the same

time, the challenge lies in the fact that you

only really see the finished work for the first

time in the exhibition. And then the work is

usually slightly different from what you imagined,

even if all the information has been

exchanged between the artist and the curator.

But the step from a digital rendering to

space or, more generally, from imagination

to reality, always comes with an element of

surprise.

5. You’ve worked with major figures in

contemporary art like Marina Abramovic

and Olafur Eliasson. How does curating

a focused section like Bawwaba with

emerging or mid-career voices compare

to those larger-scale projects?

Working with figures like Marina Abramovic

or Olafur Eliasson is, of course, an extraordinary

experience, but in my curatorial career I

have regularly been working also with young

and emerging artists. And this is what excites

me also about Bawwaba: the opportunity

to champion new voices. Many of these

artists—like Nina Kintsurashvili from Georgia

or Iris Projects’ Abdullah Al Othman—may

not yet be known artists globally, but they

are pushing boundaries in powerful and

promising ways. Some, like Omar Mismar,

have already received international attention,

having shown at the Venice Biennale,

while others are still being discovered. I find

this process of discovery deeply rewarding,

not just for me as a curator, but for the audiences

who encounter these practices for

the first time.
