Choosing the Right Lawyer is No AccidentVIRTUAL PROCEEDINGS (ZOOM, TEAMS, ETC.)Since the COVID pandemic of 2020, most legal proceedings areconducted on Zoom or similar platforms. This includes hearings,depositions, mediations, non-binding arbitrations and more. You canalways ask your attorney if you can come to their office and they canaccommodate you. However, the other attorney and participants willlikely still be on a screen. If you choose not to come to your attorneysoffice, here are some tips to make sure these proceedings move forwardwithout technical problems and you can help yourself and your attorneyby doing the following:1. If possible, do not use your smartphone. You may have to viewdocuments on your screen or photographs, and it is going to be difficultfor you to see them on a small screen. A tablet or a computer is simplybetter.2. If you are hooked up to a wired ethernet connection, that ispreferable. However, at the very least you are connected to a strongWi-Fi signal.3. You must be somewhere private, and give your undivided attentionto the proceeding. A room in your home or at work is fine. Somepeople have no choice but to do it parked in their vehicle (never whileyou are driving). Nobody is supposed to be with you while theseevents are happening. You should not be doing another activity such asdoing the dishes (yes, I had a client do this during a mediation). Showrespect for the process. Remember, the defendants and their attorneysare evaluating you as a witness and whether you will be likeable infront of a jury. Show that you are taking your claim seriously.4. Make sure you have decent lighting. Do not have an open windowbehind you as it will distort your image. Lighting coming from behindyour camera is better than light behind you when you are on video.5. Test your equipment! Make sure you have a camera and microphonethat work properly. If you haven’t already, download Zoom orwhatever platform you will be using in advance to avoid problems theday of your event.Legal proceedings can be stressful on their own.
