Choosing the Right Lawyer is No ACCIDENT- A Personal Injury Guide - By Jeff Adelman (2025 Edition)
If you are reading this, you likely have been injured as a result of a car accident or slipping or tripping on someone’s premises as a result of negligence. In the pages that follow, I will provide insight as to what you should expect from a lawyer (attorney) fighting on your behalf for personal injuries. This book is intended as a general guide if you are unfortunate to have had this happen to you. It has been with the least amount of “legalese” as possible, so you do not have to be a lawyer to understand it.

AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE BASICS
It is important to have a basic understanding of automobile insurance
BEFORE you have an accident.
Automobile insurance varies from state to state. Bodily Injury Liability
coverage, referred to as “BI,” is the coverage you will most likely deal
with if you bring a personal injury claim. In the event that you are at fault
for an accident, BI protects you from having to personally pay for
damages if the victim of your negligence has a personal injury claim.
Believe it or not, Florida does NOT require drivers to purchase this
coverage. It is the only state that does not require drivers be responsible
and have coverage in the event that they hurt someone. In 2022, the
Florida legislature overwhelmingly passed a bill that would have
eliminated mandatory Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage and
made bodily injury coverage mandatory. Unfortunately, Florida’s
governor vetoed the bill. I will discuss “PIP in more detail later in this
chapter.
This is how it works. If you look at a policy and it says
$50,000/$100,000, this means $50,000 per person, $100,000 total per
accident. If there are more than two people injured, the total amount the
insurance company can be on the hook for is still $100,000.
You are also not required by law in Florida to have any
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage, referred to as “UM,” in
the event somebody hits you who does not have insurance or has a very
small bodily injury insurance policy. But based on the information in the
preceding paragraph, it is easy to understand why I strongly feel this is
the most important coverage on your policy. Whatever amount of
coverage you have on your own policy to help other people that you may
have injured, your bodily injury coverage (BI), you can match that
amount for your Uninsured Motorist Coverage.
