!aster Sunday has felt a long time coming
this year. Has it been that way for you as
well?
Social media influencers have been posting
outfit ideas, Easter basket gift items, table
settings and flower
arrangements since
mid-February. I guess
after Valentine’s Day
this was the next holiday
they could think of for
gift giving. St. Patrick’s
Day just doesn’t offer
the same appeal.
B a b y c h i c k s a n d
ducks made their appearance
weeks ago
at local farm retailers.
Many of those early
broods have outgrown
their “cute” stage, which, to be honest, is a
rather short season of their young lives.
I am not dyeing eggs this year. I found a local
farmer with a flock of semi-exotic chickens that
lay colorful eggs. Green, blue, brown and beige,
solid and speckled, they need nothing to dress
them up. A dozen of those will be lovely in a
pottery bowl.
When the kids were young, we hid plastic
eggs, and a basket for each filled with simple
summer toys, perhaps a new pair of flip-flops,
inexpensive sunglasses, individually-packaged
snacks and candy.
They outgrew that tradition long ago, but
thanks to my brother-in-law’s family, we’ve
replaced it with a new variation.
Each family member, no matter the age,
has one egg to find – the one with their name
written on it. The “Easter bunny” selects hiding
spots appropriate for the age of the seeker.
Lower to the ground and less hidden for the
young ones, more obscure for the teenagers
and somewhere on steady ground for the older
generation who may not want to scramble
through the landscaping.
Everyone’s a winner.
In my opinion, that’s perfect for Resurrection
Sunday.

Dry Run
Drainage, Ltd.
Paullina, IA
With weather patterns evolving into larger and more frequent
events, proper field drainage is becoming more and more
important. Appropriately drained soils are able to absorb more
water in a more efficient fashion than saturated soils and suffer
less erosion. Dry Run Drainage works to give area farmers a
bigger window for planting and harvesting, while saving soil and
more effectively using the rainfall. Dry Run Drainage ensures
that your soil has great moisture holding ability, and that the
tile only removes what the soil can not hold. Sometimes, fields
that historically were not so wet actually have an old drainage
system that has begun to deteriorate or were not designed to
handle today’s rain events. Dry Run Drainage is here to help you
maximize your farm’s income potential. Properly drained soils
are the first step needed to maximizing economic return.

Art center displays
the Works of Gary
Ernest Smith
Some may look familiar. Other may
seem new.
They’re all part of the Pearson
Lakes Art Center’s collection and for the
first time are being displayed together in
a single gallery show.
Through June 14 in the Weaver Lobby
Gallery visitors will have the opportunity
to see Selected Collection: The Works
of Gary Ernest Smith.
“What’s unique about this show and
exciting for the art center is being able
to highlight the depth of our collection
and show some of the works we store
in our vaults,” said visual arts director
Danielle Clouse Gast. “This collection of
paintings was a gift from Ray and Susan
Johnson in 2018 and it’s the first time
we’ve shown it as a whole.”
Gary Ernest Smith grew up in Oregon
and is based out of Utah where he
earned his master’s degree in painting
at Brigham Young University.
Slices of life featuring hard work and
agricultural settings will be familiar
scenes for folks from the Midwest. A
moment of leisurely recreation will be
familiar to regular art center visitors in
a painting of a snowy hill with a group
of people taking turns on sleds and
toboggans. This particular piece often
highlights winter exhibits at the art
center.
The oil paintings range from quite
large to rather small scale pieces and
will be the first thing visitors see when
they step into the art center over the
coming months.
“When we’re building our exhibition
season it’s exciting for us to be able to
use our own collection as a resource
and this is a great example of that,”
Clouse Gast said. “It’s an outstanding
collection that we’ve pulled individual
pieces from time to time so it’s exciting
to make room for it be seen in its
entirety.”

Family Nature Night set for April 25
!t’s time to make some new friends.
The staff at the Dickinson County
Nature Center are letting families get
up close and personal with some of the
animals they have at the facility.
Family Nature Night is hosting Night
at the Nature Center from 5-6 p.m. Friday,
April 25. The free event is aimed
at families of all ages and families can
preregister before 5 p.m. on Wednesday,
April 23.
“This free event has become a favorite
and offers encounters with many of the
animal ambassadors at the Dickinson
County Nature Center. During the
program, meet some of the beloved
animals like Steve the bearded dragon,
Luna the hedgehog, Bindi the bunny,
and a few others,” according to the
press release. “Families will learn about
the animal sponsorship program and
explore Kenue Park to highlight some of
the local wildlife, from swans to squirrels.”
The animal sponsorships are a hugely
important part of helping the nature
center offer up unique and educational
events for kids and families.
“Each sponsorship
helps cover the
cost of food, habitat
upkeep, and veterinary
care – and
in return, sponsors
receive a certificate,
info card, and photo
of the animal,”
said Amy Heibult,
the community
relations coordinator
at the Dickinson
C o u n t y N a t u r e
Center. “The Animal
Sponsorship
Program is a great
way for families to
stay connected to
our nature center
e v e n a f t e r t h e
event.”
In addition to meeting the animals,
the families will get to indulge their creative
side by painting a wooden slithery
snake to take home. They will also get
to play “Which Animal is That?” They
will have to find clues that will be hidden
throughout the Nature Center and
guess which animal fits the clue for a
chance to win a prize.
This is one of the Nature Center’s
favorite events.
“This is one of our favorite events
of the year – it’s all about connecting
families with nature in a way that’s
fun, hands-on, and memorable,” said
Heibult. F

UP
It’s time to saddle up and head out
West.
At least as Far West as the Majestic
Pavilion in Arnolds Park.
That’s the site of the Bedell Family
YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Fundraiser,
this year titled “Boots, Buckles &
Bids!”
The event is scheduled for 5-9 p.m.
Saturday, April 26, with tickets priced
at $50 per person.
And everyone is encouraged to dress
the part.
“We have a different theme each year
and will have a few contests for things
like best outfit or best belt buckle,” said
Kyle Struve, communications director
at the YMCA. “We’ll have live and
silent auctions, table games like horse
racing and even a little shooting gallery
with rubber band guns.”
Happy hour runs from 5-6 p.m. with
music provided by DJ Jimy Mac allowing
for plenty of opportunities to stomp
those boots and have a great time.
There will also be a Chuckwagon
Dinner featuring items like buffalo
meat loaf, cheesy potatoes and plenty
to fill up the hungriest of cowboys.
Best of all, each dollar raised and
all the fun to be had throughout the
evening helps ensure everyone is able
to enjoy the amenities and activities
offered by the YMCA.
“We always say that the YMCA is
for everyone, and raising these funds
helps us provide programs, memberships,
camperships and other opportunities
for the community,” Struve
said.

!he bugs are coming.
Yes, summer is right around the
corner and that means mosquitoes,
gnats and other bugs are going to start
interrupting beautiful sunsets with frantic
swats, but that’s a ways off yet.
There are other bugs that are coming to
town a lot sooner.
The Iowa State University Insect Zoo
is coming to Okoboji to the Dickinson
County Nature Center’s Maser Monarch
Lodge to showcase a wild world of
insects and arthropods.
The Insectigations event will be held
from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 26.
The event is free and people are able
to come and go as they please. People
are able to preregister for the event
by going online by 5 p.m. Wednesday,
April 23.
This event is
for everyone – no matter whether or not
you like bugs.
“Whether you are a bug lover or a little
bug-shy, everyone can find something
to enjoy,” said Amy Heibult, the community
relations coordinator at the Dickinson
County Nature Center. “It’s really
fun to see kids light up when they realize
just how fascinating these little creatures
really are.”
Families can look at all the different
insect exhibits – either up close or at a
distance, depending on your comfort
level.
“Learn about diverse insects, isopods,
tarantulas, scorpions, and more amazing
creatures and their essential role in
the ecosystem.
Activity stations will also be present
where youth can dig up some fun in the
sensory area or make an insect-themed
craft to take home.”
Bugs just aren’t cool to learn about.
They are essential to our world.
“Insects are so interesting and crucial
to our existence, whether that’s in the
food they make possible for us to eat or
in the decomposition of organic matter,”
said Heibult. “There are many ecological
roles that make insects something to be
appreciated.”
This event is going to give your kids a
change to fall in love with bugs.
According to Heibult, “This event will
have your kids buzzing with excitement –
literally!” F
