Image taken at Moelven in Mjösbruket,
Norway. Moelven is Norway’s largest wood
processor and was the first European
customer to order a Catech edger with
vision scanning and value grading
optimization. USNR’s Catech-brand edgers
are known for high speed and accurate
volume recovery. With the addition of
full-color vision, they also deliver value
optimization. Originating in the midseventies,
Catech has become the
leading brand in high-speed edging

EDITORS COMMENT
The rich can go a Iong
way to saving the planet
Forests are burning like never before
which directly affects the forestry
business.
Rainforests are declining at an alarming
rate further propagating climate change,
enhancing the likelihood of escalating
severe wildfires, droughts, and higher
temperatures around the world.
In our July August 2023 issue, I raised
issues surrounding the lack of money
invested by governments in saving the
rainforests. That year alone China and
the USA are spent over a trillion dollars
on defence budgets with China unlike the
USA not interested in contributing to save
the Amazon rainforest.
As a non-believer Trump will have recently
cut any government budgets relating to
the Amazon and climate change. With
governments failing to address the
impending catastrophe is it time for the
worlds rich to step forward and take the
initiative?

Ponsse Greasing System –
new solutions for forest
machines chain lubrication
The PONSSE Greasing System
is a new optional accessory
for Ponsse harvester heads,
designed for chainsaw
lubrication. The system feeds
grease to the chainsaw from
screw-in grease cartridges
according to the dosing
settings made through the
Opti5G information system.
Grease cartridges stored in a
warm place ensure effective
lubrication throughout the
work shift.
“This is a solution that
makes the workday of a forest
machine operator easier,
especially in cold weather.
The grease cartridges replace
the fixed grease tank in the
harvester head, so you no
longer need to pump cold
grease from an external
container to the harvester
head’s grease tank. The
cartridge is quick and easy
to replace. The cartridges are
easy to transport and can be
stored in car or cabin,” says
Toni Rajaniemi, Ponsse’s
project manager.
The lubrication system
can hold two 400-gram
screw cartridges, which last
approximately 8–16 hours,
depending on the amount of
sawing and dosing settings.
The dosing settings can be
adjusted from the Opti 5G
information system according
to the situation and need.
The information system
notifies the operator when it is
time to change the cartridge.
The grease cartridge is quick
to change, so the machine’s
downtime is very short.
The grease cartridge can be
refilled.

A new strategic direction for Carbotech
Carbotech is proud to
announce a major strategic
step: the unification of
Carbotech and Autolog,
acquired in 2021, under a
single operational entity,
Carbotech. This initiative
strengthens the company’s
identity, consolidates its
market position and optimizes
its operations. By simplifying
its structure and pooling
its strengths, Carbotech
aims to maximize synergies
between its teams and offer its
customers a smoother, more
consistent experience.
Reorganization of senior
management
This evolution is accompanied
by a restructuring of the
management team to prepare
the succession and support
the company’s strategic
vision. Among these changes,
we would like to highlight the
appointment of Luc Houde to
the position of Chief Executive
Officer, having previously held
the position of Executive Vice
President. Patrick Leblanc,
who held the position of Vice
President of Optimization and
Automation until recently,
will succeed Mr. Houde as
Executive Vice President and
will take on the responsibility
for the group’s overall
operational strategy.
“We are convinced that
this unification reflects
our dynamism and our
commitment to anticipating
and responding to emerging
market needs,” emphasizes
Luc Houde, Chief Executive
Officer at Carbotech.
A forward-looking vision for
the benefit of customers and
partners
With this new, unified entity,
Carbotech reaffirms its
ambition to innovate, progress
and excel in its field of
expertise, while maintaining
the standards of quality and
excellence for which it is
renowned.
This transition, designed
to be seamless, guarantees
our customers, partners and
employees continued access
to current products and
services, now grouped under
the single Carbotech banner.
About Carbotech
Carbotech is a manufacturing
company that offers innovative
solutions for the wood

Koskisen has agreed to acquire the business operations of Iisveden
Metsä – supports the sustainable growth strategy
Koskisen Corporation has
agreed to acquire the business
operations of Iisveden Metsä
Oy. Located in Suonenjoki,
Iisveden Metsä is a company
mainly owned by private
individuals and it produces
approximately 140,000 m3
of spruce sawn timber per
year. Iisveden Metsä Oy was
founded by local forest owners
in 1924.
The transaction will be
carried out as a business
acquisition, including, with
certain limited exceptions,
the entire business of
Iisveden Metsä, including the
factory property located in
Suonenjoki with machinery
and equipment, as well as
inventories. The personnel of
Iisveden Metsä, approximately
50 people, will be transferred
to Koskisen as “old
employees”. The transferred
business does not include the
target company’s receivables,
cash and cash equivalents
or other financial assets or
liabilities.
Iisveden Metsä’s revenue
(unaudited) in 2024 was EUR
52.7 million (EUR 52.5 million
in 2023, audited) and EBITDA
(unaudited) in 2024 was EUR
1.4 million (EUR 0.5 million in
2023, audited).
The book value of the
balance sheet items to be
transferred was approximately
EUR 24.9 million (unaudited)
at the end of 2024.
If completed, the
transaction will increase
Koskisen’s revenue and
EBITDA. The transaction is

Koskisen.
As a result of the
acquisition, Koskisen’s annual
wood procurement volume
will increase to approximately
1,900,000 m3 (of which
Iisveden Metsä’s share is
approximately 400,000
m3) and sawing capacity to
approximately 540,000 m3 (of
which Iisveden Metsä’s share
is approximately 140,000 m3).
Iisveden Metsä is
committed to a transfer
restriction for 15 months
from the completion of the
transaction, during which the
consideration shares may not
be transferred.
Koskisen’s CEO Jukka
Pahta
Tommi Sneck, Director,
Sawn Timber Industry
at Koskisen.
The completion of the
transaction requires the
approval of Finnish and
Estonian competition
authorities, approval by a
qualified majority at the
Annual General Meeting
of Iisveden Metsä and the
fulfilment of certain other
ordinary closing conditions.
Koskisen expects the
transaction to be completed
during the first half of 2025.

Introducing Comact’s New Hybrid Sawline:
Speed, Flexibility, and Innovation
NEW!
In the fast-evolving
sawmilling industry,
efficiency and
adaptability are critical
for success. Sawmills
must tackle the
challenges of achieving
higher productivity,
reducing costs, and
maximizing recovery—
all while managing an
increasingly variable
and unpredictable log
supply.
Comact, a global leader
in wood processing
solutions, proudly
introduces its new hybrid
sawline: a groundbreaking
system that combines circular
saws and bandsaws in the
primary breakdown process.
This state-of-the-art solution
represents the next generation
of sawmilling technology,
seamlessly integrating speed,
flexibility, and advanced
performance to accommodate
a wide range of log diameters.
Primary Breakdown:
Combining Circular Saws and
Bandsaws
At the heart of the new
hybrid sawline is its ability to
seamlessly integrate circular
saws and bandsaws, providing
unmatched efficiency in
handling a wide range of log
sizes.
Circular saws, designed
for rapid, high-speed cutting,
efficiently process logs up to
20 inches in diameter with
minimal downtime. Their
ease of maintenance and
cost-effectiveness make them
ideal for the bulk of sawmill
production, delivering both
precision and efficiency.
For larger logs exceeding
20 inches, the system
incorporates bandsaws,
extending the cutting capacity
of the sawline. Bandsaws
handle oversized timber
beyond the capability of
circular saws, ensuring no
recovery opportunities are
missed, regardless of log size.
This hybrid approach makes
the sawline uniquely capable
of maximizing throughput and
efficiency without increasing
maintenance demands.
Flexibility to Meet Diverse
Market Needs
Comact’s new hybrid sawline
is built to adapt to market
demands with multiple cutting
modes, including double
profiling, quadruple circular
cutting, and splitting. These
capabilities allow sawmills
to produce a wide range
of lumber products, from
standard dimensions like
2x4 and 2x6 to custom-sized
wides—all on a single line.
Example of Cutting Patterns Executed by the Hybrid Sawline
30 International Forest Industries | APRIL / MAY 2025
This flexibility empowers
sawmills to expand their
product range without
investing in additional
specialized equipment. By
consolidating operations
into a single, multi-purpose
system, the hybrid sawline
reduces equipment costs,
streamlines maintenance, and
enhances overall operational
efficiency.
Maximizing Efficiency and
Reducing Costs
The new hybrid sawline is
engineered to streamline
production, minimizing the
need for remanufacturing,
cutting down on operational
complexity, and reducing
material waste. These
efficiencies directly translate
into significant cost savings
and increased profitability for
sawmills.
Circular saws, the primary
tool for processing most
logs, are quick to replace and
require minimal maintenance,
reducing downtime and
ensuring consistent
production. The system’s
modular design further
enhances its value, allowing
for straightforward upgrades
and scalability as demand
grows or technology advances.
This future-ready approach
ensures that sawmills remain
competitive, meeting evolving
industry standards and
customer expectations.
Smart Technologies for
Optimized Performance
Beyond mechanical
innovations, the new hybrid
sawline incorporates stateof-the-art
technologies to
elevate performance. At its
core is Comact’s Smart Vision
system, powered by artificial
intelligence.
The Smart Vision system
optimizes log feeding by
analyzing the size, shape,
and characteristics of each
log in real time. It dynamically
adjusts the gap between
logs, ensuring smooth and
consistent flow throughout
the sawline. This automated
adjustment maintains optimal
cutting speeds, prevents
bottlenecks, and enhances
overall production efficiency.
Additionally, its advanced
bin management functionality
tracks and regulates log
supplies, preventing overaccumulation
or underfeeding.
Together, these intelligent
features maximize productivity
and ensure seamless
operation, even when
handling a diverse range of log
dimensions.

Log handling systems
may not always steal
the spotlight in sawmill
operations - but without
them, the entire process
grinds to a halt.
Efficient, reliable, and
high-throughput log
yards are the unsung
heroes of wood
processing, laying
the foundation for
everything that follows.
From Logs to Lumber: Springer
Delivers Tailor-Made Efficiency
Austrian engineering
specialist Springer has
long been known for
its automation and systems
expertise in the wood
industry. However, many
potential customers are still
surprised to learn that the
company also designs and
delivers full-scale log handling
systems - complete with
scanning, debarking, sorting,
and automation.
That surprise may not last
much longer. In recent years,
Springer has completed 20
log handling systems and 28
major upgrades worldwide.
The results are impressive.
A Canadian Success Story
One outstanding case is
Groupe Savoie, a major
hardwood processor in
New Brunswick, Canada.
The company partnered
with Springer to increase
productivity and future-proof
its mill.
“With the new Springer
grading line, we increased
our sorting capacity from
715 to 1000 cubic meters per
11-hour shift - that’s a 35%
productivity boost,” says
Simon Bergeron, a key project
lead at Groupe Savoie.
Speed is a critical factor.
“We now sort up to 36 logs
per minute - that speed was
a major reason for choosing
Springer,” Bergeron adds.
Springer’s use of screw
technology rather than
conventional wave systems
has made a strong impression
at the facility. Operator
Supervisor Kevin Savoie notes:
“The thing that surprised me
the most was the speed. With
Springer, we process 34–36
logs per minute, compared to
24 with the traditional wave
system.”
But it’s not just about
throughput. Groupe Savoie
also reported significant
labor savings and improved
workplace safety.
34 International Forest Industries | APRIL / MAY 2025
Kevin Savoie,
Operator Supervisor
Simon Bergeron,
Key Project Lead,
Groupe Savoie
“What used to require six to
eight people can now be done
by two,” Savoie explains.
“And we don’t need to go into
the screw system to clear
blockages anymore. There’s
much less manual work
required.”
Customized systems
Springer emphasizes custom
engineering for every
installation. No two sawmills
are alike, and neither are their
log handling systems. This
customized approach includes
everything from layout
planning and equipment sizing
to automation integration and
data connectivity.
For Groupe Savoie, this
meant finding a solution
that could efficiently process
hardwood, handle difficult
log geometries, and reduce
downtime. According to
Bergeron, the screw system
was a clear advantage:
“Springer’s screw system can
handle even very crooked logs
that other suppliers couldn’t
manage.”
It also helps that the
equipment is built to last. “The
system is strong and built for
hardwood. We didn’t need to
make it more robust - it was
already heavy-duty,” he notes.
Smart Upgrades and Digital
Tools
Not every site requires a
complete new installation.
Springer frequently delivers
upgrade packages that
modernize and optimize
existing log yards. These
can include everything
from automation retrofits to
scanner improvements and
layout optimizations.
The company’s commitment
to digitalization is another
strength. Bergeron highlights
the Springer Service App,
which simplifies spare parts
management with visual
documentation and easy
ordering: “It’s very userfriendly
- you can see each
part and assembly clearly.”
More importantly,
downtime has dropped
significantly since the system
went live. “Before, the sorting
was part of the sawing
line, which caused a lot of
downtime. Now, with the new
setup, downtime has dropped
significantly,” Bergeron
reports.
Building Partnerships, Not
Just Plants
Springer’s customer focus is
repeatedly praised. Groupe
Savoie describes the support
it receives as both professional
and adaptable. “Springer has
good people. Their technicians
are knowledgeable and
responsive - on site and
remote,” Bergeron says. “They
helped us improve our line and
increase our production.”
That cooperation is central
to Springer’s philosophy. The
company doesn’t just install
equipment and walk away - it
builds long-term partnerships
based on trust, service, and
innovation.
When asked if he would
recommend Springer to others
in the industry, Bergeron
is clear: “Yes, I would
recommend Springer to other
plant managers. They offer
high-quality solutions and
are a great company to work
with.”
The Road Ahead
Springer continues to push
forward with its log handling
systems, combining traditional
mechanical excellence with
modern automation and
digital tools. Whether through
new installations or system
upgrades, the company
provides customized solutions
that turn raw logs into valueadded
products - efficiently,
sustainably, and reliably.
With successful projects
like the one at Groupe Savoie,
Springer is cementing its
reputation not just as a
technology provider, but as
a strategic partner to mills
around the world.

Catech Edgers with
Value Optimization for
Moelven Mjösbruket
USNR’s Bioluma sensors recognize every
wood defect © USNR
Hall 25, Stand D65
USNR’s Catech-brand
edgers are known
for their high speed
and accurate volume
recovery. Now, with the
addition of full-color
vision, they will also
be offered with value
optimization. Several
systems have found their
way to the market and
Millwide Insider visited
one of them, at Moelven
Mjøsbruket in Norway.
The Swedish range of
Catech edgers originates
from the mid-seventies,
when the first computerized
edger optimizers were
designed. Since then, Catech
has been the leading brand in
high-speed edging and more
than 600 systems have been
installed.
Catech also pioneered the
technology for unmanned
operation, and even today
most competitors need a
dedicated edger operator
to run the systems. Today’s
edger optimizers are
highly developed precision
machines. The geometric
scanning and optimization
match the speed and accuracy
of the mechanical entities,
such as the infeed table
and edger saw box. In other
words, the speed and volume
recovery are at the very limit
of what is possible for today’s
technology.
While European-style
edgers traditionally have
relied on geometric scanning
and optimization for maximum
volume, USNR’s North
American operations have
utilized vision scanning and
value optimization since 2009,
when the first system was
installed in the US.
Merging technologies
Marrying these two
philosophies together seemed
like the natural next step. Said
and done – Catech XT edgers
now feature double-sided
vision scanning and value
optimization. Attempts have
been made by others before
to implement vision scanning
and value grading in edgers.
But this is the first system
with double-sided color vision
scanning.
USNR’s Bioluma sensors,
combined with a powerful
optimization system,
accurately detect a wide
range of defects. In the short
space between the scanner
and infeed table, a decision
is made based on the most
valuable product possible.

We have changed our
perception of the side
boards. It’s no longer
all about volume. These
products have value!
Terje Eng, Moelven,
Production Manager
A solution where the optimizer have identified defects (knots) and chose to make a narrow,
but more valuable board compared to what a geometric system would have done
The powerful computers
make sure that the
optimization time does not
slow down the process. The
peak capacity of the Catech
edgers is still at 75 boards
per minute. USNR’s Bioluma
sensors have a laser profiling
resolution of 8 mm (0.3’’) and
color vision camera resolution
of 0.5 mm (0.02”).
With continuously
increasing resolution of the
geometric scanning devices,
accuracy and recovery have
increased accordingly.
Computing power has
also increased, making it
possible to perform complex
calculations at high speeds.
Value and volume
Value optimization works
on both ends of the quality
spectrum. Flitches that will
never make it to high-grade
can become extra-wide
boards, leaving as much wane
on the boards as the grade
rules allow. On the other
hand, a flitch that has defects
located on either side, but the
majority of the flitch shows
good potential, can result in
a narrower but more valuable
board than what it had been if
the widest solution had been
chosen.
Moelven Mjösbruket
The first European customer
to order a Catech edger with
vision scanning and value
grading optimization was
the Norwegian mill Moelven
Mjösbruket. Moelven is
Norway’s biggest wood
processing corporation with
mills in both Norway and
Sweden.
The existing edger from
Söderhamn Eriksson (now
USNR) had been in service for
20 years but didn’t quite keep
up with today’s demands for
capacity and optimization. The
goal for the new edger was
to increase the capacity with
an additional 20 boards per
minute.
At the time of the
investment, USNR was
launching the new optimizing
technology for Catech edgers
and Mjösbruket was given the
opportunity to test the system
over a period of six months.
The Moelven corporation
extensively tested the
system and found that it was
worthwhile to move forward
with it.
Grade scanning spruce
Eighty percent of Mjösbruket’s
production is exported. The
lower grade boards with more
wane edges are sold on the
domestic market. For the
international markets, it’s all
square-edged products. Many
are surprised that a spruce
mill like Mjösbruket would
benefit from grade scanning,
but Mjösbruket has proven
differently.
Sorting is done according
to the Nordic sorting standard
and the parameters in the
optimization system are set
up to align with those rules.
Although the mill has different
grading systems in the edger
and the dry sorting line, the
results work well together.
Successful project
Mill manager Sturla Vestrum
is happy with the investment.
The overall project went
according to plan. Both
grading and cutting accuracy
have shown great results.
The edger line is now
running at a continuous speed
of just about 60 boards per
minute, which was the main
capacity target.
The mill never had as
few sixth grade (the lowest
quality) boards as it has today.
Having transferred sawn
volume from the lowest grade
means that the overall value of
the products from the mill has
increased.
Now having more precise
tools, the mill can control the
production and increase or
decrease the amount of lower
grade boards according to
demand.
Production manager Terje
Eng says: “We have changed
our perception of the side
boards. It’s no longer all about
volume. These products have
value!”

Deere introduces
new operator assistance
features and enhancements
on its 900 M-Series Tracked
Feller Bunchers, 900 MH-
Series Tracked Harvesters
and 900 ML-Series Shovel
Loggers. With a focus on
customer productivity, the
updates include an enhanced
Dedicated Travel System,
which has been updated
for greater efficiency and is
now a new feature on the
900 M-Series machines.
Additionally, the new
Return-to-Level functionality
and further undercarriage
improvements help to
enhance durability. These
operator assistance feature
updates help improve the
overall customer experience
in variable operational

O’Halloran, global product
marketing manager at John
Deere. “The updated operator
features and improvements
on our 900 Series models
empower operators to
maximize efficiency with
simplified functionality, for
exceptional productivity.”
The Dedicated Travel
System isolates the travel
functions from the other
functions on the machine.
This enables the operator
to focus on the task at hand
by not allowing boom and
swing operations to interfere
and slow down the travel
functions. In addition, the
power balance and availability
has been optimized and can
be adjusted between the
upper and travel functions,
allowing priority to the needed
operations. Dedicated Travel is
standard on the 859M, 953M,
and 959M Feller Bunchers,
as well as the 959ML Shovel
Logger. It remains optional

Bunchers and 859MH and
959MH Harvesters.
The new one-touch
Return-To-Level functionality
combines multiple leveling
system adjustments into
one push-and-hold operator
input. As the machine
moves to a different slope,
the rotating upper can be
brought to a level position
(based on the parameters
of the leveling system) by
utilizing a simple button
function on the joystick. The
individual leveling control
buttons will remain. This new
operator assistance feature
has been combined with
the field-proven John Deere
Slope Monitoring system,
which actively measures
and displays the slope of
the terrain to the operator.
These two advanced features
allow the operator to focus
more on the application
machine adjustments. They
are available as the new Slope
Management System, which

upgrade on all John Deere 800
and 900 Series leveling feller
bunchers, harvesters, and
shovel loggers.
In addition to these new
performance and productivity
features, all 800 and 900
Series leveling feller buncher,
harvester and shovel
logger models received
improvements to the leveling
system cylinder pin joints. The
leveling cylinder pins have
been updated with a larger
diameter, tighter machining
tolerances, and an improved

Komatsu Releases 2 Next-Gen Large Wheel Loaders
The first of the Dash 11 models for North America, they feature more power, greater
fuel efficiency and faster climbing than predecessors.
Komatsu’s two new wheel
loaders, the WA475-11 and
WA485-11, are designed with
more power, use less fuel
and climb hills faster than
predecessors reports Don
McCloud Equipment World.
They mark the first of the
company’s Dash 11 models.
The 5.5- to 6.3-cubic-yard
WA475-11 replaces the WA475-
10, and the 6.4- to 7.2-cubicyard
WA485-11 replaces the
WA480-8. Both come with
the Komatsu Hydrostatic-
Mechanical Transmission,
which switches to hydrostatic
when high torque is needed
and mechanical for increased
fuel efficiency during lighter
use.
The WA475-11 runs
on a 343-horsepower
Komatsu engine, with 53
more horsepower than its
predecessor. Despite the
power increase, it has 7%
lower fuel consumption, the
company says, and a 40%
increase in climbing speed.
The WA485-11 runs on a
363-horsepower Komatsu
engine, a 64-horsepower
boost over the WA480-8. It
reportedly delivers 12% lower
fuel consumption and 13%
faster climbing speed.
In the redesigned four-pillar
cab, operators will find angle
feedback joystick steering
and independent work control
designed to help reduce
fatigue. “The engine speed is
automatically optimized based
on lever operation without
pressing an accelerator
pedal,” Komatsu says.
“Separating the transmission
control from work equipment
simplifies operations with less
brake wear during hopper or
truck loading.”
A steering wheel option
is available.
Visibility has been increased
by adding a lower glass area
and by eliminating two rear
pillars, and in-cab noise has
been reduced, the company
says.
Rear object detection with
warning buzzer and indicator
light and a deluxe LED light
package are standard.
The WA475-11 and WA485-11 wheel loaders are built to help you
get more done with improved fuel efficiency, increased power
and faster climbing speeds on grade. Engineered for long shifts,
these machines feature a comfortable cab, advanced joystick
steering (AFJS), and independent work control to help reduce
operator fatigue
Komatsu says it also
redesigned the buckets with
a cross-sectional shape for
increased digging efficiency.
“The material is scooped and
rolled up along the inclined
floor of the bucket.” Using it
with the auto-digging system
can help boost productivity,
especially for inexperienced
operators.
For increased productivity,
both models can be
configured as yard loaders,
with larger buckets; heavier
counterweights; wide, lowprofile
tires and rims; and
reinforced frame.
The YL configuration is
best for quarry and aggregate
uses and is designed to load
matching on-highway trucks in
three passes.

EDITORS COMMENT
Whether or not the world’s
richest individuals and
companies should contribute
to climate change funds is a
matter of debate and depends
on various factors, including
ethical, moral, and practical
considerations. Here are some
arguments on both sides of
the issue:
Arguments in favour of the
world’s richest contributing to
climate change funds:
Wealth Disparity: The
world’s richest individuals
and corporations often have
accumulated vast wealth,
sometimes through industries
that contribute significantly
to greenhouse gas emissions.
Addressing climate change is
a global challenge, and they
can play a role in mitigating
the impacts of the problem by
contributing financially.
Responsibility: Some argue
that those who have benefited
the most from economic and
industrial activities that have
contributed to climate change
have a moral and ethical
responsibility to help address
the consequences.
Funding Solutions: Climate
change requires substantial
investments in renewable
energy, technology, and
infrastructure to transition
to a more sustainable future.
The wealth of the richest
individuals and corporations
can help fund these solutions.
Public Relations: Contributing
to climate change funds can
improve the public image
of wealthy individuals and
companies, demonstrating
a commitment to corporate
social responsibility and
environmental stewardship.
Incentivizing Change: By
contributing to climate
change funds, the wealthy can
encourage others to follow
suit, creating a ripple effect of
support for climate action.
Arguments against the world’s
richest contributing to climate
change funds:
Voluntary vs. Government
Responsibility: Some argue
that addressing climate
change should primarily
be the responsibility of
governments through policies,
regulations, and taxation,
rather than relying on
voluntary contributions
from wealthy individuals
and companies.
Effectiveness: Critics may
question whether voluntary
donations from the richest
can make a significant impact
on global climate issues
compared to systematic
changes in policy and industry
practices.
Wealth Redistribution: While
contributing to climate
change funds can address
climate issues, it does not
necessarily address broader
issues of wealth inequality.
Some argue that more
systematic approaches, such
as progressive taxation,
are better suited to wealth
redistribution.
Accountability: There may be
concerns about how funds
donated by the wealthy are
allocated and whether they
are used effectively to combat
climate change, leading to
calls for greater transparency
and accountability. Ultimately,
the question of whether
the world’s richest should
contribute to climate change
funds is a complex one with
varying perspectives. Many
people and organizations
argue that both individual
contributions and systemic
changes are necessary
to effectively address
climate change. It is likely
that a combination of
efforts, including financial
contributions from the
wealthy, government policies,
and global cooperation,
will be needed to tackle the
challenges posed by climate
change comprehensively.

Air Burners ® Hosts Demonstration Event Featuring the BioCharger ®
Air Burners showcased its new air curtain burner, which creates an environmentally-friendly, closed-looped
system for managing vegetative waste while powering electric machinery fully off-grid
Brian O’Connor, president of Air Burners
In March in Palm City,
Florida, Air Burners®, the
leading manufacturer of
air curtain burner systems
worldwide, showcased the
BioCharger®, a revolutionary
innovation that turns green
waste into green energy.
The recent destructive
wildfires affecting the
United States have shown
the immense need for more
efficient forest management
and land clearing in wildfireprone
areas.
Developed in collaboration
with Volvo Construction
Equipment and Rolls-
Royce Power Systems, the
BioCharger directly addresses
that need while reducing black
carbon emissions compared to
traditional disposal methods.
The BioCharger is a fully
portable air curtain burner
system that converts radiant
heat into electricity, stores the
generated power, and then
charges electric vehicles and
equipment on-site.
The machine utilizes
an Organic Rankine Cycle
system to generate electricity,
which is then stored in the
attached storage module’s
600 kilowatt-hours battery,
allowing the end user to
charge their machinery
locally. This opens an
untapped potential for forest
management, land clearing,
and wildfire mitigation
services.
“Electric machinery is the
logical next step in the fight
against climate change and
concerns over air quality,”
said Brian O’Connor, president
of Air Burners. “We saw a need
for off-grid power generation
and charging in the forest and
vegetative management space
to accommodate that shift. The
BioCharger is our response to
filling that need.”
The event took place at an
Air Burners demonstration
site hosted by TCIRood, a local
Florida landscaping company.
Attendees listened to a
presentation that explained
the current landscape of
vegetative waste management
and the technology behind
this new product while
receiving exclusive access
to experience this cuttingedge
technology in action. As
part of the demonstration, a
Volvo compact electric wheel
loader was used to show the
capabilities of the BioCharger
to recharge 48V equipment.
